I can’t tell you how many people have asked me if there is ANY way that No. 10 Georgia Tech can get to the BCS championship game. It’s a long shot because there are seven undefeated teams ahead of Yellow Jackets. But for fun, let’s give it a try.
Remember that if you’re Georgia Tech, the goal is to get to No. 2. Let’s try this:
1. Florida (8-0): Runs the table and beats LSU (not Alabama) in the SEC championship game to finish No. 1. Now everybody is playing for No. 2.
2. Texas (8-0): Loses its regular-season finale at Texas A&M on Nov. 26. Texas coach Mack Brown says he still has the best one-loss team in the country. Then, in stunning upset, the Longhorns lose to Nebraska in the Big 12 championship game.
3. Alabama (8-0): Loses on Saturday to LSU. After failing to reach the SEC championship game, the Crimson Tide fan base and players are so deflated that they forget to show up at Auburn on Nov. 27 and lose for the second time.
4. Iowa (9-0): The Hawkeyes, who have won ugly just about every week, lose at Ohio State on Nov. 14. Whether or not Tech could catch Iowa would depend on the human polls because the computers really like Iowa (No. 2).
5. Cincinnati (8-0): The Bearcats have been playing well despite an injury to quarterback Tony Pike, but they lose at home to West Virginia on Nov. 13 and again at Pittsburgh on Dec. 5.
6. TCU (8-0): The Horned Frogs lose at home against Utah on Nov. 14. TCU is good, but a 12-1 Georgia Tech will jump an 11-1 TCU.
7. Boise State (8-0): A 12-1 Georgia Tech would jump over an undefeated Boise State because the Broncos play such a weak schedule. Boise plays three opponents ranked 100 worse down the stretch.
8. Oregon (7-1): The Ducks are the hottest one-loss team in the country. They have to lose again. How about Nov. 21 at Arizona?
9. LSU (7-1): The Tigers upset Alabama and win the SEC West. But then LSU gets its doors blown off in a rematch with Florida in the SEC championship game to finish 11-2.
10. Georgia Tech (8-1): Georgia Tech runs the table beating Wake Forest, Duke and Georgia. Then it wins a rematch with Clemson in the ACC championship game to finish 12-1. The Yellow Jackets move into the No. 2 spot and play Florida for the national championship in Pasadena,
Wasn’t that easy?

Having watched Tech closely last week I think they have the most effective offense in the country ( effective meaning production + time of possession). Their D is not championship caliber but when you possess the ball 40 minutes a game, that is less of a factor.
Since nobody else is grasping the ring, why not Jonathan Dwyer for Heisman? He made some pretty good defenders look average on Saturday.

Camus,
You will not possess the ball for 40 minutes when you’re playing against a championship caliber defense. Vandy may be an SEC team, but they aren’t championship caliber on offense or defense. Still, they maintained a lead over the Jackets until they wore down in the second half.
Tech’s only advantage over Vandy was their depth on the bench. First string vs. first string, Vandy wins that game.

I actually don’t think Texas, Alabama, or Iowa have to lose twice. If UT and Bama each lose their respective championship game, and Iowa loses to the Buckeyes, then those three teams fail to win their conference. It’s always been said that a team won’t go to the CG without a conference title.
Still probably not going to happen, but not quite as hard to believe as each of those teams needing 2 loses….

Come on Coach O, everybody knows that EVERY team is tough, fast and deep in the SEC. It’s obvious Tech just got lucky against Vanderbilt and Mississippi State when they scored all those points. (And Mississippi State last year and the bulldogs from Georgia last year) (Also I guess it doesn’t matter that the horrible Vandy team was only down 5 or so at LSU at half and up on South Carolina at half or that Miss St had the ball on the goal line with a chance to beat LSU and gave Fla all they wanted) Yes Sir it’s a rough and tumble life in the SEC. EVERY game is a tough one. You can;t take any trip for granted, isn;t that what we always hear whenever an SEC team loses a close road game. So which is it Coach O, you can’t have it both ways.

So you are saying that Bobby Johnson basically pulled his first string players at halftime and played the second half with his second string?? Yes they were playing their 2nd string QB – but he also played almost the entire first half. And no one has marvelled at the depth of GT this season. And how do you beat UF?? As Arkansas and MSU have shown, it can be done with a good offense and a capable set of officials.
And Big Time – that bit about the Cokes and hot dogs is getting old. That was during the last coach’s time at GT. As I said in another posting here, that now applies to the UGA men’s basketball team. Or the UGA football team in a few years if they keep on going downhill like this year.

Nice to think about,…but our focus is on Wake Forest,..nothing more. What is fun to reflect on is how absolutely miserable the ugag nation has become. Not only are they going down in flames at 4-4,….they know deep down that this malaise goes beyond the season at hand. Florida, Alabama, LSU,…in another league. Love him or hate him,..Kiffin is rebuilding the program at UT,….and have already passed the Dogs. It took last second heroics to upend Arkansas and South Carolina,..not likely to happen again. Nutt has Ole Miss moving upward,…even though they were vastly overrated in the preseason. Auburn will continue to give ugag a tough time,…..at least when they play in Athens. So,…as they watch us ascend the polls,…all the while stealing the spotlight across the state and beyond,…they know that they’ve become what they never really couldn’t rise above,..a middle of the pack SEC team.

Before everyone anoints Florida the champion just yet, they still have ti get past FSU, and the way that their offense has been playing, this game isn’t a gimme, regardless of how bad their defense is stinking up the joint. If Florida loses to FSU, they won’t play for the National Title.
I doubt that Texas loses to Texas A&A, but suppose they slip up against, let’s say Nebraska, in their Title Game. If Texas was to lose, they would be eliminated from contention.
Agree that Oregon might have a problem at Arizona; if they lose, Oregon is out.
Agreed that Cincy needs to worry, especially at Pittsburgh; if they lose, they’re out.
Iowa losing at Ohio State is a big possibility, especially how many close games they have been playing, and since the game is at Ohio State, it’s the biggest chance for an Iowa loss left on their schedule; if they lose, Iowa is eliminated.
Utah seems to have TCU’s number, winning most of their games against each other over the past several years, but the game being played at TCU will be a huge boost for the Horned Frogs. If TCU were to lose, they would be eliminated.
Alabama could lose to LSU or Auburn; my guess is that LSU will be the better opportunity, however, because they seem to have the better defense, and right now, Bama’s offense isn’t playing well, so I would expect another defensive struggle, like the game against Tennessee. If Alabama were to lose to LSU, they are out of contention. On the other hand, Auburn is always a wild card, a rivalry and them playing like Jekyll and Hyde. If Alabama were to lose to Auburn, they would be out of contention.
The chances for Boise State losing are virtually non existent.
So with that being said, I would highly doubt that Boise State and TCU play for the National Title.
If Florida beats FSU but then loses in the SEC Championship, they won’t play in the National Title game either.
So there you have it…I think.

For all of you who posses zero knowledge of the game of football. No, I don’t mean to imply that only first string players should play the game. I was only pointing out the fact that Vandy often plays head-to-head with their competition in the first half of a game, no matter who they happen to be playing.
Vandy has a long history of falling behind and losing games in the fourth quarter. This is due to the fact that, while their coaches and first-team players are capable of competing with almost anyone, they come up short on talent when they begin to tire and have to play their second and third string players.
But then, most of you guys only watch the ‘play-makers’ when you watch a game. Therefore you fail to realize that the vast majority of games are won or lost at the line of scrimmage by players whose names you don’t even know.

If Coach O Vandy’s first string is better that Ga Tech’s he/she is either not paying attention or is so SEC-biased to not have any real credibility (kinda like Tony).
Tony’s Tech path to the BCS is way too pessimistic and again reflective of his SEC bias. To be in the NC you will have to win your conference championship. So even an undefeated Texas for example – if a Big 12 Championship loser — will not get in. Also the NC will not be a repeat of the SEC championship game (assuming that undefeated Alabama/Florida meet in Atlanta. That’s only an SEC bedwetters. However a one loss SEC champion is probably in. LSU gets in only if it wins out. Florida gets in only if it wins the SEC. Same goes for Alabama. Iowa has to lose, but it will only take one loss. Oregon has to lose again. Boise and TCU have to lose once.
So the most likely sceanario. Only one of the three SEC teams has a chance (but one will almost definitely be in) LSU, Florida, Alabama will be vs. 1) Texas if it wins out (or only has one loss, is the Big 12 Champ and no other team except TCU/Boise is undefeated); 2) Iowa if it wins out and Texas does not meet above criteria; 3) TCU if it wins out and neither Texas or Iowa meet their criteria; Oregon if it wins out (and see above about the others, etc.). Its still a long shot for Ga Tech but not as difficult as Tony (Mr. College oops, Me SEC Football) would have you believe.

No team that doesn’t win it’s conference is playing in the NC game. So if texas loses it’s conf champ, another team gets the bid. The sec will likely get one team in there unless something even more bizzare happens. Iowa will lose to osu. And oregoen will probably lose this weekend at Stanford. The key will be texas losing the big 12 champ game or maybe to a bad big 12 team. Then if GT wins out, which is tough itself, they would stand a good chance.

Won’t happen. Boise will run the table and get in before Tech. Not saying they are worthy but that is reality. Tech has no signature wins now that Va Tech has proven that Beamer is a lousy coach. The loss to Miami is still a killer in the minds of the voters.
Tech’s D is still an issue. I’m not so sure that Tech beats UGA much less Clemson in a rematch. Could lose to Wake although not likely. My guess is there is one more loss coming for Tech but 12-2 will still be the best they have had in well, forever.

I don’t think it’s as hard as you elaborated. I think this should be the way to make a case to Tech: Tech has to win out and also wins ACC Champ. If this happens, who else can be ahead of Tech? The answer is FL/BAMA/Tex/Iowa/Oregon. Other teams won’t cut it because they are a non-BCS conference or schedules are weak. Among the 5 teams,
1. Oregon have to win out otherwise they are a 2-loss team
2. Iowa has to win out and win conference title otherwise they won’t be ahead of Tech
3. Texas has to win conference title. If Tech wins ACC while Tex lose their conference title at the same time, Tech will be ahead of Tex.
4. No matter what happens to SEC in-fight, FL/Bama/LSU will only occupy 1 of the top 2 spots, they won’t take both top-2 spots. So Tech can only take the other one. So FL/BAMA/LSU is basically a non-factor to Tech’s quest. The only thing that has to happen is 1, 2, and 3 for Tech to be in BCS title game. Of course Tech has to win out and win ACC title.

The fact remains that Vandy whipped the Jackets in the first half and lost in the second half.
That is consistent with everything that I have said regarding the subject.
QED
Going into the half tied is whipping now? Lord, please dont be a homer and oppose everything that GT does.

Georgia fans get pretty testy when their program sucks, huh?
It was a nice run while it lasted, you even finished No. 2 one time. And hey, you were ranked preseason No. 1 for a couple of weeks.
But now it’s time for another decade or two of mediocrity. Man, I really hate that for you!

No one is suggesting that any of that will happen. It’s just a scenario that would put Tech into the game. Chances are good that none of that will play out. But it’s fun to think about. I especially like number 3. Acutally, I like any plan that will keep bammer out of the game.

How can you be tied with a team and whip them???? Idiot.
Boise will NOT be ahead of gt if we win out. Not a chance. They keep dropping in the polls cause they don’t deserve to be where they are at. Tcu probably needs to lose but it’s not a given. The fact is, you have to win your conf to get to the title game. If iowa loses, the big 10 is out of it. If texas loses it’s conf champ, the big 12 is out. the sec is getting ONE team in there. Cincy needs and will lose. Tcu could sneak in but that would be a hard sell. Gt has a better chance than most think b/c they act like every team above them has a chance. They don’t.

My preseason prediction was Texas over florida in the title game. I’m sticking with that.
However, I also thought that UGA had a chance to win 9 or 10 games. Diet coke helps the fried crow go down a little easier……….

You’re right Funny!,
Vandy led by 31 to 28 in the third quarter. Tech then went up by a score of 35 to 31 and maintained their lead throughout the remainder of the game.
I’m willing to admit to any mistakes that I make. You guys should at least be willing to admit that a team that has not beaten ANY of their SEC competition gave you a helluva game for three quarters.

Anybody who thinks the UGA alumni and fanbase and administration is going to accept mediocrity is outside their mind.
There can be two successful programs in the state of Georgia. Like Florida was for awhile(they actually had 3) and Alabama. Some Tech folks think in order for Tech to be good, UGA has to be mediocre. That’s foolish thinking. Why can’t both have 10 or 11 wins at the end of the season when they meet?

Hey Coach O, I think the techmites have already won a championship or two, so to your point, you must be retarded then. Sounds like you’ve been coaching the Dawgs!

Vandy also played hard against South Carolina, but they lost. “On any giving Saturday.” Vandy has an awesome running back that will make waves next year.
GT just needs to beat Wake Forest and so on……….
It is a nice thought for Georgia Tech! Ramblin Wreck!!

It’s not gonna happen, but I still think you give Iowa and Cincinnati way too much credit. If either loses, it’s a dead cinch that GT jumps them, assuming GT runs the table

there’s a typo on this page.
“mr college football” is clearly supposed to be “mr sec football”.
