If Florida doesn’t suspend Spikes, SEC office should

So what did we learn over the weekend?

1. If Florida doesn’t suspend Brandon Spikes, then the SEC office should. Unless the video below has been doctored, this is simply unacceptable from a college football player. Spikes is a great player. He is also an emotional player. And he clearly let his emotions get the best of him when he stuck his hand inside Waushan Ealey’s facemask. My hope is that Florida coach Urban Meyer looks at the video, is horrified, and suspends Spikes for at least one game. Spikes needs a reality check. Look, I know enough former players who have told me that a lot of bad things happen in pileups. But this is right out in the open and everything was caught on camera. This is a player intentionally trying to hurt another player. It’s simple: If coaches are going to be held accountable for their actions and officials are going to be held accountable for their mistakes, then players must be held accountable for what they do. There is no place in the game for something like this.

We just learned a little while ago that Spikes will be suspended for the first half of the game against Vanderbilt on Saturday. I would have done it for an entire game, but I’m not going to quibble with the decision. It sends the message needs to be sent.

2. Georgia should never, EVER, EVER wear black helmets, black jerseys, or black pants again. Look, I understand. Georgia coach Mark Richt was trying to do something to give his guys a little extra “umph” as they went to Jacksonville to play No. 1 Florida. But it didn’t work. It never had a chance to work because, like we said last week, Georgia is such a fundamentally unsound football team. Georgia is now 119th out of 120 Division I-A teams in turnover margin (minus-15). That means Georgia has committed 21 turnovers and gained only six. Only one team in college football (Texas Tech) has committed more than Georgia’s 74 penalties.

The fact of the matter is that Georgia is not a well-coached football team. The head coach has proven he knows how to win in the SEC so he should be given every opportunity to fix what is wrong. But there is definitely something missing at Georgia.

By the way: You can repaint the helmets. But burn the black pants. And do it now.

3. Christian Ponder is a gamer. The Florida State quarterback took a serious shot to the ribs early in Saturday’s game with N.C. State. But Ponder played through the pain and led Florida State on the winning touchdown drive late to beat the Wolfpack 45-42. Ponder completed 26 of 40 passes for 266 yards. The week before he completed 33 of 40 and rallied Florida State from a 24-6 deficit for a victory at North Carolina. This guy is going to be on a bunch of Heisman lists next season. Just an aside here: Ponder’s heroics came before a crowd of only 67,712 at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee. That’s the smallest home crowd in 16 years.

4. LSU is still in the hunt for the national championship: People forget about the Tigers after they lost 13-3 to No. 1 Florida on Oct. 10. But LSU (7-1) plays No. 3 Alabama in Tuscaloosa on Saturday. Win that one and the Tigers will probably get a shot at No. 1 Florida on Dec. 5 at the SEC championship game. A win there should put them in Pasadena. Now I think Alabama is going to win the game on Saturday. But LSU is starting to figure out some things on offense and is flying very confidently under the radar.

5. Georgia Tech had better not sleep on Wake Forest or Duke. Wake Forest (4-5) had Miami beat in Winston-Salem and let it slip away (28-27) after QB Riley Skinner got hurt. Three of its losses are by three points and another is by one point. The only blowout loss it has had was to Clemson (38-3). Duke (5-3), which hosts Georgia Tech next week, is really starting to figure some things out in the second year under David Cutcliffe. If Duke wins at North Carolina this week and Tech beats Wake Forest, first place in the Coastal Division will be on the line when Tech goes to Wallace Wade Stadium on Nov. 14.

It’s hard to know how badly they might have lost this one in their Silver Britches…

That said, it IS getting old. I only hope that Tennessee refrains from wearing their costumes except on Halloween.

No doubt that was a dirty play by Spikes and he should receive some punishment. Wether that be a vrebal reprimand by Meyer or a one game suspension I’m not certain. Let’s no turn a blind eye though to the dirty play on both sides of the ball. Tebow took a couple cheap shots from the UGA defense and the facemask on Brandon James five yards out of bounds was unacceptable.

Hey there Gator Al. “Just misunderstood?” That is what you call a player that intentionally tries to gouge the eye of an opponent? Well maybe he can understand a suspension and then they can all get on the same page.

I am not a GA fan by the way. That said, Spikes’ actions were reprehensible.

In my opinion, good teams/programs simply do not need to change uniforms to pump up the players. That is a gimmick, which clearly did not work for GA.

I love how fans now have instant replay and video evidence/analysis of the things that have been happening on the field since football was created. I don’t like it that it happened but there were things going on in those piles and on that field that didn’t get magnified on tv. C’mon people, next thing you know we’ll have the government officiating and creating a zero tolerance of any hit on the field or action by a player that is not within what THEY believe to be TRUE football spirit of play! Whatever that is! Sometimes I hate TV for picking up every little nuance of the game and dissecting it. These things (and some much much worse) happen in piles all the time.

Agree on suspending Spikes, but couldn’t believe that item was the lead. Nice effort to water down the embarrassing beatdown Georgia took on Saturday.

We regularly see partisan homers who are willing to defend anything. Is there a Florida fan out there who wants to defend Spikes and explain why his action shouldn’t warrant at least a one game suspension? My guess is it will be coming down from the SEC office by the end of the day.

TB- You’ve gotta be joking right? I usually agree with 95% of your takes on issues dealing with CFB. That said, openly advocating the suspension of a player because of a call or no-call is irresponsible journalism on your part. What Spikes did was without a doubt unsportsmanlike and should be dealt with, by the FLORIDA STAFF. There was no penalty called on the play and I assure you he was not the only player on the field displaying this type of conduct. Using your logic, the SEC should review every play from every angle on every player and look for “dirty” plays or penalties not called and assess penalties accordingly.
Wake up UGA fans and journalists supporting the Dawgs and realize your program has a problem, not ours.

You must not have watched the whole game. I know you notice earlier in the game when Spikes was took his helmet off after a Georgia player preformed the same act on him. Spikes had to sit out a series because he was poked in the eye by a Georgia player. Tebow had a similar moment in the game where he had been poked in the eye to and had to go over to the sideline and have it looked at. I know you are upset that your beloved dawgs got beat, but please do some research before saying a player needs to be suspended. If Spikes needs to be suspended then so do the Georgia players who did the same exact thing.

As a Techstar, I agree some action should be taken against Spikes, but that was only the most blatant personal foul of the game. The out of bounds hit and helmet rip offs weren’t much better. Hell would be UGA playing FSU – the penalty yardage would exceed the total offensive output of both teams. Don’t forget when Chuckie Amato left the fold and went to Raleigh, NC State became one of the dirtiest teams in the ACC. Something about that Tallahassee Kool-aid.

Guys,

It doesn’t matter who beat who in this game. This kind of stuff is more important than one game. And if Spikes got his eye poked earlier in the game and there is video evidence to support that, then Florida should get it and submit it to the conference office. If Georgia players engaged in this kind of behavior then they should be suspended as well.

I’ve met Spikes. He is a good kid who made a mistake. The players have to understand that you can’t let your emotions get the better of you. And if you do, then you have to be held accountable just like coaches and officials are held accountable.

It is a tough call to sit a player down. But the game is bigger than the people who play it. When stuff like this happens and it is caught on camera, you have to address it.

you might want to ask Spikes if when he lost his helmet before that play you are referencing, if there was any eye-gouging on him that led to a little retaliation. Somewhere I read about the solution to that one in the Old Testament.
Besides, who knows if he really knew where he was putting his hand/fingers. For all we know, he might have been trying to strip the ball out

I’m looking for silver helmets and red pants next year, then maybe we’ll have a shot. Maybe we can use some other emotional thing to get us up for the game since we can’t even get up for playing Florida. Lets now focus all of our attention on dirty plays instead of facing the reality. There was unsportsmanlike actions happening all over the field so lets not whine about what was caught on tv. I don’t condone it, but there are a lot of things that go on in which tv doesn’t catch. So I guess if your caught it matters? This discussion is wasting time on what really matters…what is going on in Athens? How did our players get to where we are jumping around on the sidelines when there is a lot of football left to be played. Where is the coaching?

Spikes is over 250 lbs and had all the leverage in the world. He must be the world’s worst eye gouger since Ealey went straight back to the huddle without even a hint of a scratch or injury.

I can’t believe anyone would pay any of you for writing the drivel you throw at us. The color of the pants or jersey or helmet doesn’t make one iota of difference in how a bunch of kids play a game! The team UGA is putting on the field is young and inexperienced and has to grow up as individuals and as a team. There are one or two seniors there but not enough to overcome all the youth. Face it, when Moreno and Stafford left, and I think they did the right thing, our offense was done! Period! I’m not blaming JC for the offensive woes, but right now he is about equal to where Stafford was as a freshman, without the rifle arm. In time these guys will be good but it’s hard to be patient when you’ve tasted a little of the big time – as in 2007. Season before last we finished #2 – now everyone wants to throw all the coaches out – I’m sure there are a lot of coaching staffs better than UGA’s but really how much better do you think they would do with the players we have now? Kids at almost all offensive positions – playing a lot of kids on the defense as well. We were over due for a season that doesn’t meet our expectations – I’m sure there is nobody out there any more disappointed than CMR!

A one game suspension seems appropriate. What Spikes did was wrong. Just like the late hits by UGA , and the hardcore facemask on Brandon James. Ealey also kicked Spikes the next series after his pick 6. That tape will be shown as well Mr. Barnhart.

Tony:

We all know you are a homer for UGA and the SEC. This was shown even more by your column today.

Let’s see – UGA is 4-4, GT is 8-1. GT has beat 2 of your wonderful SEC teams this year. So where does that leave Tony? UGA is the first two stories, and GT is fifth, AFTER FSU, which GT has already beaten. And the mention of GT? Totally about how GT should be concerned about WFU and Duke. Nothing about the success of the team this year.

So Tony – will Mr. College Football even MENTION GT on your little College Football show this week? Or will you be too busy discussing Brandon Spikes??

1. If you’re going to suspend a player for punching another after something was DEFINITELY said to provoke it (see Oregon), then Spikes should at least get suspended for the remainder of this season. Total trash.

2. Agreed. When has the black gimick EVER worked for Georgia??? If anything, they should have worn Georgia Tech colors so 20 years down the road when the game is replayed on ESPN Classic the players could tell their kids it was Tech that got manhandled that day.

3. Let’s see how Ponder does against Florida….then you can use the “H” word.

4. LSU? Yeah, and so is Cincinnati, Boise State, Iowa, TCU, and probably even USC despite getting kicked around by Oregon on Saturday. Oh, and don’t forget Notre Dame. Please. Even if LSU got by Bama, they won’t beat Florida in the SECCG.

5. I wouldn’t worry about Tech. Miami opened their eyes for them.

Wake is an excellent team with 4th yr starter Riley Skinner still at quarterback, with GT losing to them in the ACC title game with Skinner back in 2006. Had he not had a concussion, chances are Wake may have pulled out the win over Miami. Every week is a battle for GT..these teams in the ACC are good ones and they beat up on each other to keep themselves out of the rankings. UGA could not fare any better, in fact much worse, against FSU in Tallahasse and Wake, Clemson, VT. I mean, please be our guest and set up games with these teams instead of running your mouth how inferior they are to your precious conference. Clemson is 90 miles away, knock yourselves out. That is one thing you will never hear a UGA fan say, “Let’s play Clemson” but cowardly would rather point the finger at GT and say they do not play anybody.

Speaking of helmet popping off, why can’t players buckler their helmets anymore. Two plays after Spikes helmet was ‘ripped off’, it fell off on a play where he was making a tackle. How hard is it to buckle all four snaps; they are there to, wait for it, keep the helmet from popping off. I know it looks cool to run around with one or more corners unanchored, but that is a good way to end up with a concussion.

Tony I agree with your take on Spikes and if a UGA player did the same suspend him too.

If black pants and helmets are need to get the team up for #1 UF in Jax the coaching staff has some serious problems motivating players.

The problem was not motivation the problem was the play calling. Kelin Johnson was on the call in show and said it was the same staff, the same plays, and that team a leader must step up. There is something more than wrong at UGA. This program has been declining for 2+ years. It boggles my mind, that they cant “get up” to play this game or the TN game or any other huge game. What are the coaches doing to these guys. We all know the D is garbage, and WM is gone after this year, but what about the damage being done to the brand and program as a whole. No killer instinct in these guys at all.

If the coaches cannot see that they have to pull Cox and start one of the younger guys, then they need to seriously look at their occupation. If the real reason, and we will find out, is that they are worse than Cox then God help us.

Spikes is garbage, total garbage.

Ok, football fans – IF Brandon Spikes intentionally did “eye gouge”, it was wrong, and if the officials had seen it, a call would or should have made. If the call was made, I expect there would be a lot fewer comments on this issue. But this is after the fact, the final whistle has blown. Urban Myer is a tough coach, tough to his players, and tough to the opposing team. And I feel strongly he will address the video and act with Brandon Spikes. What will be the outcome? Who knows, but it is between coach and player at this time. I didn’t like seeing it and I’m giving Spikes the benefit of doubt mainly because I have watched Spikes play and do not know of any “off field” antics. I believe he is a tough, but clean competitor. Tony you’re shedding your normal un-biased reporting and letting your red and black show through if you’re JUST going to bring up dirty play by Spikes.
That game was one of the worst examples of unsportsman like unnecessary late hits and violence that I’ve every witnessed and UGA started it from the beginning of the game. It’s almost like the dawgs spent their whole week off practicing late hitting, going for the head, helmet take downs, and eye-gouging. Florida papers report at least three Gators were treated for eye-gouging injuries, including Spikes. I’m not condoning Spike’s actions if that is indeed what he was doing, but the dawgs played with unsportsmanlike abandon from kickoff and the Gators had to respond.

Spikes makes a horrible play indeed, but are you sending in video of the dirty plays your dawgs were involved in… no because you are the biggest homer EVER. The late hits, ripping off helmets, pushing and shoving, and kicking done by your running back Saint No. 24 who never hurt a fly… or kicked Spikes after a play behind the ref… send that one in too!

“I’m Tony Barnhardt and because my precious dawgs got beat up so bad, I’m going to get somebody suspended so I can feel better eating my morning Twinkie.”

This is probably not too far from the truth. Your argument that Spikes should be suspended is because he was caught on camera…… wow great insight….. if a Georgia player shanks a Florida player in the pile and it’s in the pile, nothing should happen to him because no body saw it????

I’ve had to read this crap for too long, and listen to it for too long on CBS. Everything you write or talk about is outlandishly biased. I hope Spikes does get suspended so he can travel to Georgia and gouge your eyes as well.

What Spikes did was wrong, and Coach Meyer should deal with it. Additionally, the UGA players were also guilty of some cheap shots.
I will give the Dogs credit in that they sure can dance their stupid cha cha cha. Too bad they cannot play football.
It was a great day in Jax once again. This year, the Dog Fans refrained from all of thier idiotic barking before the game because they sensed the Gators were on a mission. I certaininly loved watching the folks dressed in red in the East Stands leaving once again at the beginning of the 4th quarter leaving a background of blue seats which must have described thir mood.
I do not care what happens when UGA plays Georgia Tech this year, but the Dogs will have a difficult time with the Yellow Jackets.

I have spoken to Urban Meyer and he promised me that this would not happen again, so this is a dead issue. Alabama and Florida will represent our conference well when they both are undefeated in the SEC Championship game. I am also working on a scenario that both teams could have a rematch in the National Championship game as well!

To all AD’s in the SEC: you know how important it is for us as a conference to keep both Alabama and Florida undefeated in the SEC, so please refrain from questioning calls or pointing out players and things they may have done during a game… Remember, we are the SEC and need both teams undefeated. When you rise to their level, we will protect you as we are protecting Alabama and Florida right now. Any school that defies my wishes, will be dealt with harshly. Your head coach will be suspended for one game and fined $20,000.00 (Kiffin will be fined $40,000.00).

I look forward to a trip to the beaches of sunny FLA for new years. Maybe we’ll get an invite to play the SEC runner-up as the winner will be in the NC game. ‘Nola sounds nice too!

Spikes should sit out the regular season. How is this different than Blount from Oregon? Spikes went into Ealy’s facemask twice! Thats bull @#@!# But I have a feeling, even after the administration sees the tape, that they’ll slap him on the arm and give him a wink.

I know this stuff happens in the games, but Spike was caught red handed. Florida has to do something, and one game will not be acceptable. If ESPN covered this story like they did with the Oregon-Bosie State cheepshot, Spikes would be gone

I’m not sure why Jeff Schultz and Tony are worried for GT about the results against Vanderbilt. For one thing, we know our defense is not that good. But our offense is one of the best in the country and will cut thru people like a hot knife thru butter. GT scored more points on an SEC defense this season, than any SEC team has (56). They also scored 42 on Miss State which is the 6th highest score on an SEC defense this season. They’re 2-0 agains the SEC this year and will be 3-0 by season’s end. Wake Forest and Duke are not going to stop this offense, and regardless of how bad our defense plays, it won’t be bad enough for Wake Forest or Duke to outscore this offense.

I have no worries that Paul Johnson will get enough effort out of this defense to win the final three games. I mean, he’s not Mark Richt (who talks about all the penalties they get, but doesn’t punish anyone for it). Paul Johnson has his team’s attention and they know there is accountability on this team (unlike UGA).

The video shows Brandon Spikes fingers entering inside the facemask, but does not show any contact with the eyes. That is assumed. Also, the player did not complain of any eye injury. I’m sure Ealey will now all of a sudden come forward with a severe eye injury that he “forgot to mention.” This is no worse than the blatant late hits on Tebow, ripping off of Spikes’ helmet, and cheap shots UGA players were giving to Gators all game.

I know I played football millions of years ago and kids were different then, but our coaches made everyone on the team pay for penalties and turnovers. The inability of the Georgia coaching staff to correct the problems of penalties and turnovers is proof positive they are not doing their jobs. I know the UGA coaches have focused on the issues more this year than in the past and for what ever reason the message isn’t being delivered.

If you take away the penalties and turnovers, who knows how this season turns out? It’s just like TOs, rebounds and hitting free throws in hoops, the team that has the best margin in those categories usually win.

How simple can it be?

Spikes was retaliating for Ealey spitting in his face earlier in the game. If you don’t think that kind of stuff goes on at the bottom of piles in every game you’re kidding yourself, especially a rivalry game. Spikes is an emotional player and you want your MLB to be mean and a little nuts. UGA could probably use more of that attitude on their defense.
That being said, it happened to be caught on camera and I wouldn’t be opposed to a one game suspension. And we happen to play Vandy on Sat.

I agree that this behavior has no place in college football. If you think that this doesn’t happen in every game, and worse, by every team, you are kidding yourself. This just happens to be caught on tape. However, while we’re having the SEC review behavior, let’s also look at the tape of nearly the entire Georgia team leaving the bench apparently to fight the Gator players after there was some pushing and shoving on the field. If I’m not mistaken, the penalty for that is automatic ejection from the game and suspension from the next game played. This type behavior absolutely cannot continue and needs to be addressed by the SEC.

At 17 seconds remaining in the first quarter Spikes loses his helmet for the second time in the game. As he leaves the field, he reaches up with his left hand (gloved), pulls something from his hair and quickly reinserts it into his ear (at 12 seconds). My son saw the same. To me, it looks like an uh-oh moment.

We don’t believe it was an earring. He put it back into his ear.

It could have been noise reduction, which would be perfectly acceptable.

It could have been an earpiece. Direct, electronic communications devices with players on the field are illegal, right?

Spikes must be banned. I don’t care about the NCAA or the SEC. The first line is the University of Florida. If Spikes is allowed to continue one more practice and one more game, we are left to assume that the University of Florida as an institution values and honors the feats we deplore. The University will prove itself to be the same if not a stronger hue of scum as Mr. Spikes.

Should UF fail in the next two days to publicly and sternly address the situation, then the SEC must.

Should both fail, I am left to assume that Coach Kiffin’s remarks regarding the SEC may well be valid.

Bulldog Nation of this simple truth:

Georgia and Clemson need to play one another regularly.

One of my great fears as a ‘Dawg fan is that many Red and Black boosters, particularly that increasingly large contingent of them who are younger than I am, fail adequately to appreciate the significance of Georgia’s rivalry with the Tigers. As I wrote in the October 16, 1995, edition of The Red and Black:

We shouldn’t lightly sacrifice such a storied series as the Georgia-Clemson border war. We’ve been playing Clemson seven years longer than we’ve been playing Florida. Georgia and Clemson have met on the gridiron 60 times, exactly as many times as Alabama and Auburn will have faced one another after this year’s Iron Bowl. The Bulldogs have taken the field against over 100 opponents; Georgia has been playing Clemson longer than all but a dozen of them, and of those twelve, we continue to play just five.

The Bulldogs and the Tigers have been perpetual thorns in one another’s sides; Clemson’s only regular-season losses of the 1978, 1982, and 1991 campaigns all came between the hedges, whereas Georgia’s only regular-season setback during the three years of the Herschel Walker era came in Death Valley during Danny Ford’s 1981 national championship run.

The SEC commisioner needs to step in and suspend Spikes…let’s see if Slive is man enough……… As far as the Georgia football team is concerned..they are a train wreck….This team is worse than any team Ray Goff ever put on the field. CMR should be embarassed for sending his team out wearing black helmets and black pants….clearly this is a desperation move by a coaching staff that has completely lost control of their team. Good coaches don’t need to resort to desperation moves..they make adjustments..instill disciple and coach fundemental football. I personally like CMR…but he needs to make major coaching changes throughout his staff at the end of this season or he won’t be around to collect his $2.9M yearly salary much longer…the Georgia Nation deserves more than what’s being served up right now…and soon the big money supporters will voice their displeasure and force Damon Evans to step in and make changes if CMR won’t…sad…very sad!

Or was it when your assistant coaches under curry went down and beat up the UGA male cheerleaders. Get a life and tune into the real issues. Spikes is a thug he didn’t make the grades to get into UNC, and his transcripts were tampered with. So quit talking about something which you have no knowledge. Steve Learn to make complete statement (”when Spikes was took his helment off”) but that is expected if you went to UF.

Spikes lost his helment as most of the NFL and college players do with long hair. The helment does not fit tight enough to the skull to keep the helment on and it slips off due to the excess hair.

By the way UF never won anything until the 1990 so learn to win with class as 18 years does not make a dent in SEC history.

Love all the excuse making for Spikes. Spikes is a thug. It was dirty, plain and simple. I think Spikes was frustrated after getting hammered by Chapas a couple of times. In a game with few highlights those were alright! I guess Spikes can dish it out better than he can take it. If Ealey did spit on him that needs to be handled too.

Dawgs need some major staff changes. Giving up 37+ in eight out of fourteen games is inexcusable for a team with this kind of talent. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

I liked how UGA moved the ball. Their receivers played their hearts out. Unfortunately Joe Cox is too short to see over the line, that is why so many passes were batted away. The first few UF picks were flukes but UF is good enough to capitalize. The Gators are a team that surges, and when you give them momentum with dumb plays, penalties or turnovers they are going to kill you. I do think that if UGA had come out in the 2nd half and at least gotten a FG, if not a TD, we would have had a ballgame. Instead it became a laugher. Big changes coming at UGA.

You Dawg fans are priceless. According to Tone, only things that are caught on tape should be talked about. No UGA player has ever done anything dirty, and now Brandon Spikes and the entire Gator defense are wearing headset communicators tuned into the UGA play calls.

Go Gators– that video doesn’t show much except that Spikes helmet won’t stay on because of his hair. Comparing that to a play where he’s in a pile reaching though another player’s facemask is a big stretch. I was looking for the intentional eye gouge. If Spikes gets a haircut and learns how to adjust his chinstrap he come out fine during that play.

You’re kidding right?

Cox not able to throw over an un-blocked linebacker who tips the ball and makes a great play…yeah total luck/fluke.

Cox’s first option (Chapas) being covered and then deciding to fling one up off his back foot to Charles get’s picked. Yep sounds like a fluke.

Cox leaving Green out to dry with a bad pass that gets AJ crushed and the ball tipped. Uh huh, sounds like pure chance/luck.

Let me get this straight Tony.

You had Uga players throughout the game 1) grab facemasks of UF players like on Tebow/James. 2) you had a Uga player rip the helmet off Spikes. 3) you had various helmet to helmet hits on Tebow’s head by Uga players. 4) You actually had a Uga player spit on Spikes before this alleged purposeful hand in facemask area.

Unless you were there Tony – game was extremely chippy between both teams.

And if suspend Spikes, you damn well better suspend a ton of Uga players for what they did during the game as well. I’m sure the UF coaching staff would love to put a video tape together for you to go over.

Just because this is on video does not mean there are not other things on video as well.

The player in question did not get hurt at all and even after the game he was not complaining about it at all.

I call this whining by the Uga media because your team got their butts handed to them for 17 out of the last 20 games.

How come there is no mention of the Georgia player who took the cheap shot on Tebow when he was out of the play. That should have been an unsportsmanlike conduct and the player should have been kicked out of the game. Of course I would’t expect anything less from UGA fans: Take cheap shots at others but start whining when they start to give it back. If it gets called on the field during the game then that should be the end of it. The SEC should not step in for what happens in the game and on the field. There is no telling how many suspensions there would be if thety reviewed all the pileups and scrambles for loose balls. Everyone knows that when you are covered up in a crowd, there are no rules as to what you can grab in order to get control of the football.

Cheap shots happen in the heat of the moment, and should absolutely be penalized. However, what Spikes did was calculated and deliberate. He wasn’t even initially involved in the play but managed to get himself into that pile.

See the difference?

Dorsey Hill

November 2nd, 2009
11:29 am

Does someone know exactly what point in the game this was? I know that Ealey got in Spikes face when he hit him after a whistle and Josh Davis ripped his helmet off another play and another time Spikes helmet flew off and someone got him in the head with a helmet. Were these things after the eye-gouge or before? I’d just like to know if we were retaliating or he was. In any event, one of the few bright spots in this game was not being intimitated by that guy. Last year, when Knowshon got jacked up and Spikes had a few words for Moreno while he was on the ground, no one got him back.

I really could care less about what Meyer or the SEC does or does not do about this guy, I’m just glad we either got him back or gave him a reason. Its a least an improvement in the toughness department over 2008.

Having been right, and in the minority, alot about this team of late (I predicted a NT run in 2007, wasn’t feeling in 2008, and saying 6-6 was a real possibility in 2009) this team is a lot closer than I think most fans realize. Having finally gotten a running game in ‘09 we have the potential to win out and 9-4 would make everyone feel a lot better about things. The question on the table is: should we throw Aaron out there Saturday and roll with him the rest of the way? I tend to think we should and don’t be surprised if we do. I can’t imagine that if he’s healthy that he is doesn’t give us at least as good a chance to win as Joe does.

Even without that, we’ll have him in 2010. Logan will not be the starter in 2010. Aaron Murray will and I say without seeing him take a college snap that he will be one of if not the best to play QB at Georgia when he’s done. Jakar Hamilton comes in for Jones which I expect will be a step up. Rambo is clearly a step up from Evans. And if Banks stays healthy and Ogletree is ready to play as a frosh. safety will become strength rather than a liability. DT is a scary spot for 2010, but we’ll have some decent bodies in there.

I’m not ready for predictions for 2010 yet, but I think the rest of this year and next will be a lot, lot better than the last 13 games (7-6), even if, as expected, there are no staff changes.

While it should be boviuos that I cannot condone Brandon Spikes’ immature actions, we also cannot forget that he’s just a kid.
He needs to understand that his conduct was inexcusable and he should be punished for his loss of control.
But who among us hasn’t commited an act that he/she wishes they had not.
That loss of control in an emotional situation is something with which we can all identify and Spikes needs to learn that lesson this week.
The GA/FL game is, and always has been, a huge rivalry and, as such is subject to very rough (read that: at times – dirty) play.

As a life long Dawg fan, I venture to say that Meyer will do the right thing with Spikes. Most coaches do not want to see this kind of play with a deliberate effort to hurt an opposing player. I don’t care if you play for UGA, Florida, FSC, or Bama, that sort of thing needs to be corrected or it infects your team and eventually comes around back to the player. The question of who started it is irrelevant, the act depicted stands on its own. By the way, I am well aware of what goes on in pileups, having played football at various levels for several years in my younger days. A lot of punching and twisting does go on, some of it questionable. The fact that such events have occurred in the past does not condone it. As to Georgia, the problems are really easy to see, a lack of focus on fundamentals, a really bad Defensive Coordinator who should have been fired after last season (his continued presence and a growing sense of Richt playing favorites with him has infected the program and outraged supporters and alumni to a dangerous level for Richt’s future), lack of hard nosed discipline to stop penalties and dancing on the sideline (players should be huddling with their position coaches and going over what is happening in the game and making adjustments, not dancing around wasting energy particularly when they are losing, among other issues), and yes we are young but I have heard that for the last four years (since Stafford was a freshman) with a QB who is not of SEC caliber (average arm strength and inexperienced), but that has the ring of an excuse. Bama is playing a new QB who is having problems but they are undefeated.
Florida beat our butts bad fair and square as did Tennessee, we were poorly coached and totally unprepared. The idea that we needed a gimmick to get up for Florida (the number one team in the land to boot) is laughable. Somebody please tell Rich to man up, fire his DC and hold his other coaches accountable for their players’ performance, return to hard nosed physical footbal, emphasize fundamentals (somebody really tackle, not jank a facemask), and never, ever use another uniform gimmick the rest of his life.

Brandon Spikes is the dirtiest player I have ever seen. There are many caught on tape moments from the Georgia game both last year and this year. How he gets away with it is what I don’t understand. Last year he repeatedly speared Stafford after he had thrown the ball with the referee watching. The “head butt” was Satfford’s way of retaliating. Spikes is the definition of “thug.” If you watch the tape of the game, you will see many instances of his conduct. The “eye gouge” is plenty of reason for a suspension. Are NFL scouts watching?

Typical Mutt Nonsense. Ignore what their own side does, call for heavy handed punishments on other teams because they can’t handle this stuff themselves, and then when all else fails, throw out the vaunted “thug” reference since it’s apparently the 2009 version of the word everyone knows they shouldn’t say in public.

I’m okay with the black helmets … I mean look, we weren’t expected to win this one. I don’t think it was a cheap motivational ploy, I think it was just let’s have a little fun on Halloween in Jacksonville. Knowing this season is basically sunk anyways, I’m okay with that. If the Dawgs want to do that every time we play on Halloween (once every seven years?), let it be. I like the normal red helmets and silver britches, but hey, the uniforms looked good.

You might say that “having fun” is inappropriate for a team that’s performing this badly. No way … if we want to finish with at least a winning record, the players gotta keep up their morale and their enthusiasm for the game. It’s not about “getting up” for Florida, that’s not necessary; it’s about team morale and believing in themselves as a team.

I would be embarrassed to be a UGA football fan. Not because of the poor play, but because of the way they handle defeat. You lost to the #1 team in the nation. They are very good. You are very bad. Quit whining and accept the fact that you will probably not go to a bowl this year. Mark Richt is the best coach you can hope for. Go ahead and fire him, who are you going to hire? get over it. Unfortunately, GT is playing 3 weak SEC teams this year.

Just breaking that Meyer suspended him for the first HALF against Vandy! Yes, only a half!!! What a piece of garbage, both the coach and the player. Meyer said he got caught up in the emotions, but that he and the team stand behind Spikes.

Hopefully, the SEC will step in and make the suspension more damaging. I doubt it, but one can hope.

Dawgcryer, this fan isn’t whining. UGA had a winning program. We have the kids on the field and sidelines that are more than capable of hanging with any team in the country athletic wise. Mark Richt can coach, he knows how to win. He has lost focus the past two years as the most important part of the team has been a complete and utter failure due to lack of direction.

Embarrassed as a fan, not for the program overall, Richt has done very well. For the performance this year, yes, as any reasonable fan should be. Will I hang our coach out to dry. NO! He has done a fantastic job since his arrival and I see continued success once he makes the corrections. There is nothing wrong with having a down year (okay very bad year), it is how you react to it that will be the difference. As I mention we have the talent, the kids need the direction.

Dawgcrier and all other DisneyDawgs:

The game Saturday was not an anomaly. The program has been slipping for years (yes, I realize we finished #2 in ‘07-too bad we got whipped by a bad UT team and lost AT HOME to mediocre SC).

Richt looks and sounds like a beaten man. He refused to address last year’s problems and predictably they’ve snowballed. UGA is a program in free-fall. The only surprise now is when we hold an opponent to under 38 points.

Last year we heard a bout a million injuries (as if injuries were new to football). Funny, but that didn’t seem to really be the difference.

It all comes down to coaching. Looks like Richt was pretty fortunate to have Green, Pollack and BVG. He looks pretty hopeless without them.

Spikes should be suspended for remainder of the season — minimum. I’m not naive enough to think this doesn’t happen often in football and other sports today, but it shouldn’t be tolerated by anyone. Not suspending him sends the wrong message to everyone. I’m amazed that there are so many that would defend this, regardless of what may have happened on a previous play or plays.

As for GT, you’re absolutely right. With the Exception of Jack State, every team we have played this year has given us a tough game. Our D sttinks, and we can’t take anyone for granted. I think CPJ gets tem ready for both games, but you never know how 18-20 tear old kids are going to react. Let’s hope they listen to the coaches and not all the fans that think they are top 10 national championship contenders.

If GT runs the table the rest of the way, and they may, it will be because they worked hard and prepared better than the other teams, not because they are necessarily better players.

I have spent all day trying to unload the black helmets but no takers. Grambling said they do not want helmets that have been used in a dance that looked less coordinated than Al Gore at the national convention. As far as the two dozen posters of Urban Meyer calling time out during 2008, I think we should put them on Ebay or just recycle the posters using the reverse for hyping the gymnastics team.

It is so bleak on the Internet that I believe we should push the Brandon Spikes story. I hope we can avoid the footage of Ealey spitting on Spikes and the footage of the late hit on Tebow or the helmet to helmet by the freshman linebacker.

Claude

PS: I think next year we should not waste valuable moments before kick off by changing uniforms. We probably should have spent that time talking about how to get Green the ball on some passes. But if you want I will continue to look for the pink uniforms we discussed.

Do I think Brandon Spikes should be suspended this week??? Absolutely!! Do I think that the UGA players that “came after HIM” from the first whistle, ripping off HIS helmet and going for HIS face, recieve the same punishment??? Absolutely!! And they didn’t just do it one time. Spikes used very poor judgement and retaliated against UGA players that obviously had an agenda from last years game. BTW, just saw that Urban did suspend Spikes for the first half of the Vandy game. I think the reason that is was NOT a full game suspension is that Meyer probably looked at the ENTIRE tape and decided that it was not an unsolicited act on Spikes part, that he was responding to dirty play by UGA that started from the very first play and carried on thru much of that game. (Of course, Dawg fans will never be able to accept that anymore than they accepted the pre-season predictions by many that this was going to be a mediocre Georgia team without Stafford and Moreno.) Anyway, it’s always the second guy that gets caught and that what happened here. Under those circumstances, I thing it is an appropriate action by Meyer and won’t happen again. END OF STORY.

We need all new coaches and many new players and especially a new QB.
Why is it that UGA annually gets top 5 or top 10 recruiting classes and then turns out such banal football teams?
Could it be………. coaching? The plays are not crisp, and the players act like pansies. Maybe the fans should poke the coaches in the eyes, and quit bragging about what great recruiting classes we get each year!

Here’s the reality regarding the Brandon Spikes episode on Saturday:

Early in the game, UGA had a false start penalty so Spikes used it as a chance to step into the hole and lead with his helmet into the side of Washaun Ealey’s head – NO PENALTY CALLED AGAINST SPIKES. Ealey had clearly stopped playing and got caught by surprise, so he fought back (kudos to him!). A few plays later, UGA offensive lineman Josh Davis took matters into his own hands (literally) and threw Spikes to the ground by his hair (kudos to Davis for standing up for a teammate!) – PERSONAL FOUL PENALTY ON UGA (OK, fair enough!). Later on, being the punk intiminator that he always tries to be, Spikes dove into the tackle pile late and began cramming his hand through Ealey’s facemask and gouging his eyes.

There is no doctored video and there is no misunderstanding his intentions – He/Florida wanted Ealey out of the game because Washaun was a viable offensive threat for UGA.

Spikes should be suspended by Florida (not likely) and penalized by the SEC (maybe now since they don’t have to pave Florida’s path to the SEC Championship Game – mission already accomplished with the bogus calls in the Arkansas and Miss. State games). What might really get his attention, however, would be for Ealey’s family to find an aggressive attorney and sue Spikes’ stupid ass for assault.

He blatantly tried to gouge a player’s eyes after the play was over. This wasn’t a late or overly violent. These are handled via penalty. This was an example of a player deliberately trying to injure (potentially permanently) another player. I can’t believe you people condone this.. no wonder our prisons are filled and you can’t walk alone in Atlanta or any city at night anymore.

Spikes is a thug bully scared to face grown men his age inthe Nfl.The whole game Spikes was instigating action after the play. His helmet is barely strapped on his head so when ever he gets any kind of push under the shoulder pads its going to come off.He also head butted Ealy after one play in front of the officials and they didnt do any thing. Georgia made some bad mistakes of their own but moved the ball after Fla scored first touchdown a penalty comes from somewhere to stop drive .WhenFla. went up 17 to 10 Georgia moved the ball with first down then here comes another penalty to stop the drive.People are going to have to really look at games and not snap shots to see that Fla never gets calls against them when it counts.Officiating affects the way a game plays out bad calls turn the momentum of game around and thats how u get blow outs. Idont know wether they are on tebows jock so much that they will do any thing for Fla. to win, when every body is saying Fla is getting calls from officials its the truth. They played first two games against high school competition before playing Division one school basiclly those were two bye weeks preparing for Tennesee. The other schools were playing Div 1 schools getting banged up with out getting all the kinks worked out and yet still Fla remained at the #1 spot with out a strength of schedule.

Ah, the ? about why we (UGA) has such great recruiting classes and such mediocre football teams. Certainly our players have strength and speed and questionable coaching. But here’s the rub: our players have no balls. If your team-mate was subject to an eye-gouging, and if you do not walk over and punch out said eye-gouger, then you have no male genitalia. Its just that simple.
The Dawgs recruit neutered players with great stats on various athletic measurements, but one: agressiveness.

Spikes helmet came off again later becuase of too much hair and doesn’t buckle both snaps. Spikes likes to be seen. On the kickoff where Brandon Boykin was tackled the Florida player clearly wrapped his arm around the entire facemask and helmet and ripped his helmet off with no call. You say Georgia is whinning but we didn’t bring this up or our coaches it was brought to your coaches attention by the press. As far as losing we got beat!!! You can’t win turning the ball over 4 times was interesting to see as bad as Cox is he threw 2 touchdowns when Florida had only given up 2 all year. Problem is he comes right back and makes huge mistakes. Hearing from all of you I would think we have had losing seasons year after year but looking back since 2000 to current Georgia’s recod is 94-30 Florida’s is 95-29 and Georgia Tech’s is 77-46. Who has more class? Chip Kelly suspended LeGarrette Blount for the whole season after a sucker punch. Urban Meyer suspends Brandon Spikes for a half. In my mind, a sucker punch and an eye gouge are in the same family of pain intended retaliation. While a sucker punch is horrible, an eye gouge can cause more long term damage. As seen, both coaches took action to their players’ incidents but who’s judgment is more appropriate for suspensions? I tip my cap to Chip Kelly.

Hey Tony did you watch the rest of the game? Or did you just focus on that one play. From late hits, to spitting in players faces, to grabbing face masks, to shoving after the plays are over. The list goes on and on. Should Richt suspend Williams for this late hit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cERuyek02wA ?? What if that hit had caused Tim to suffer another concussion when his head hit the ground. Would you be calling for WIlliams’ head then? Get over it and get over yourself. It’s football, this crap goes on all the time. He got caught he will pay for his act of stupidity, but it in no way is a capital punishment type crime.

Hey, Dawggy Style:

“There is no doctored video and there is no misunderstanding his intentions – He/Florida wanted Ealey out of the game because Washaun was a viable offensive threat for UGA.”

REALLY? ! ! !
He inflicted SO much damage to UF the rest of the game?

“What might really get his attention, however, would be for Ealey’s family to find an aggressive attorney and sue Spikes’ stupid ass for assault.”

A family can’t sue anyone for assault, you moron. It’s a criminal offense – the DA’s office has to (after arrest, arraignment and grand jury indictment).

There is more disciple on a street corner in Harlem on a Saturday night than can be found with this bunch of Bulldogs, and we are watching one clip of a peasant uprising against the king of thug and TB has em acting like it was a shot from a grassy knoll. A little less help from grads like TB and Georgia might be as good as advertised instead of the mess they are.

As a Die Hard Gator Fan I have a few observations;

1. Spikes- Dirty dirty dirty play. No place for that in Football or at UF.
2. As a former player I can attest to you that things like this and much worse happens at the bottom of pile-ups. I’m not condoning this behavior but get over it.
3. If the UGA players had 1/2 the nutz of some of you tuff guys on this blog then it would have been handled on the field where 99.9% of all dirty plays get settled.
4. Tell your Administration, Coaching staff, Team and fan base to Man-up. Bunch of whiny azz folks.

As for Urban Meyer’s 1/2 game suspension-WHAT A JOKE! If the AD and/or the university president don’t step in to give a stiffer penalty, then the entire University of Florida has lost a lot of credibility.

It amazes me how quickly people are to forget mediocrity or subpar play (i.e. Alabama & Georgia Tech Bandwagoners,) or recent prosperity. How many of you in what is called “The Bulldog Nation” called yourselves Bulldogs fans the end of the Dooley and during both Goff & Donnan eras? The Goff era, if you will all be honest, was akin to gunslinging in the wild west! I remember an exciting brand of football, but what I do not remember was defense of ANY kind!! The Donnan Era (or as some would call them, the Quincy Carter years) began with promise, and fizzled out under the stench of the terms “lack of institutional control”.

Certainly, am I the only one who realizes that the program is better now than it was prior to Coach Richt? The worst thing Coach Richt has done is get us to the cusp of the national championship game, because of the precident it set afterward. Keep in mind people that this year’s schedule is significantly more ambitious than any faced under the Richt era. However, yeah the defense is awful as a whole. BUT, this is the same defense that sacked Jordan Jefferson 6 times and essentially had the game won (we know what happened after that).

As far as the uniforms…this is where my opinion differs greatly from that of your typical narrow-minded “Dirt Road Redneck” Bulldogs Fan, who has yet to realize that both Buck Belue and Herschel Walker (along with colored tube socks and “Hee Haw”) are LONG GONE!! Coach Richt earns my respect for at least attempting to challenge the conservatism associated with coaching in “Jaw-juh”. I was at the “Black Out” against Auburn in ‘07, and I will state definitively that it was the best game BY FAR I saw UGA play in person! The Energy??? The Vibe???? Nobody was complaining about that ass kicking going on that night?!! I doubt that any of you would be complaining about last Saturday had Georgia found a way to come out on top. By the way, those uniforms were BAD ASS….yeah, I said it! The problem wasn’t the uniforms, it was those 14 points UGA gave up within the first few minutes of the first quarter!

We do need change, but do not be so ignorant as to casually discard our coach. I’d venture to say that 90% of DI (or FBS as they call it now)programs would snatch him up before his feet meet the street!! Who would you propose they replace him with?! Huh?!!! Keep in mind that we are only 2 years removed from #2 BCS, and by rights should have played for the championship that year.

Bottom Lines: Give Richt a break and give him a year to rejuvinate the defense. Yeah, Willie Mo probably needs to go. Then, if we do not see “Significant Improvement”, then shake his hand and send him to work with Ray Goff at Zaxby’s.

I spoke with my boy Spikes and he wasn’t even touching Ealey’s eyes. He was rubbing spit in the little punk’s face because he has spit right in Brandon’s mouth on the previous play. Someone should ask Ealey about that. I also thought it was interesting that Ealey never mentioned having his eyes gouged in his post game interview. There is a reason for that: IT DID NOT HAPPEN! Coach Meyer suspended Brandon to save face. Nothing more. Truth is, UGA’s players were the punks out there all day but this is what was caught on tape. Forget the spitting, the ripping off helmets, the racial slurs that were thrown all day by UGA. That is just SOP for Georgia. Now they are just mad that they got beat down like children and this is what they are trying to hang there hat on. Pitiful! Somebody get Ealey to accuse Brandon Spikes of gouging his eyes, please! He won’t do it because he knows exactly what happened and it sure wasn’t getting poked in the eyes. Someone ought to ask Ealey how it tasted. He will get awful embarrassed I bet because he will no exactly what you are talking about.

Tony, if the SEC suspends Spikes then the SEC should suspend about half of the Georgia team for continous acts of thuggery during the game. Cheap shot after cheap shot all game long. And Ealey was in Spikes face all game long saying crap to him. How about suspending Ealey and the Georgia OL that ripped Spikes helment off in the first quarter, scratch his face and eye, causing Spikes to leave the game for a while. You aren’t saying anything about that. What a bunch of losers the Georgia players are and the more I read about this crap, the more I wish Spikes had walked over to Richt and punched him out for allowing his players to play like thugs all game long. Preach Jesus, Richt, and then teach your players to play like thugs on the field. SEE WHAT THAT GO YOU…another drubbing by the Gators. So go off on Spikes all you like. He is still a fine person who made a mistake. He is also a great leader. Georgia players were taunting and thugging him all day long and he could not retaliate openly because he would have been thrown out of the game…and I am sure that is what the Georgia players and coaches wanted to start with. “We can’t beat em legally, so let’s try to beat them by being thugs and get them thrown out of the game.” Spikes got his back the only way he could. Unfortuantely, for him, it was caught on tape. A log of the thuggery from Georgia was also caught on tape. Just show it and shut the _ _ _ _ up, you losers. Today, I am not longer a fan of Georgia. They were my second favorite team. No longer. My new second favorite team is anyone who plays the UGA thugs.

Fellow UGA fans.  Let’s get over it.  Coach Urban (with the apparent blessings of the muckymucks in the SEC home office) has meted out the punishment for Spikes eye-gouge.

Whether we think the punishment fits the crime or not, it’s done.

Why let all these Florida grads up here get under our skin? By the way, why ARE all you Florida grads up here, anyway – isn’t Disney World hiring?

We’re gonna keep taking it up the wazoo from these UF characters until UGA gets it’s football program back on the right track.

Selective outrage aimed at UF’s bad boy du jour is wasted energy my brothers and sisters.  And all this whining casts UGA’s fans in a most unflattering light.  It makes us look like…Florida fans.

I don’t know about the rest of you, but the last damned thing I want to resemble in even the slightest form or fashion is one of the legion of Tebow-worshipping lemmings clad in orange and royal blue.

Heck, if we’re gonna be angry about a silly game played by a bunch of geeked up mesomorphs clad in plastic armor – and we most definitley are – then let’s direct our anger where our anger will do us some good.  At the powers who run UGA football.

Ask yourself: if on this Saturday past, UGA had humbled the Gators (use your imagination – try real hard), would our tizzy over Brandon Spikes’ heinous and wanton act against one of our own be so intense?  Heck-to-the-no, it wouldn’t.

Seems to me we’re transferring our sports-rage from the movers-and-shakers of UGA football (where it rightfully belongs in continuous, industrial strength doses), to some future second-round NFL draft choice.

And do you think Brandon’s gonna lose any sleep over this? He’s got better things to do that worry about than our collective offense taken to his violation of fair play – OK felonious assault – but why quibble over semantics?

How much longer will UGA fans delude themselves into thinking a 9-3 or 10-2 record and a bowl appearance is good enough when that “2” or “3” on the right side of that season record includes yet another beat-down administered by Florida?

Is anybody else in Bulldog Nation tired of the giant dump Florida takes on our late-Autumn joy year in and year out? I anybody else ready to do something besides bitch and complain about how the world is against us?

Mercifully, we get a respite every now and again – thanks to and Coach Ron Zook’s undistinguished tenure at UF and the End Zone dance of 2007.

Hell, we’ve been sucking on this bitter pacifier for so long,  I expect we’ve gotten used to it. How else do you explain a proud program settling for the unsatisfying position of butt-boy to the Florida Gators?

Ah what the hell.  It’s only college football.  Did I just say that?

Denial ain’t just a river in Egypt.

If Meyer AND Spikes do not contact Mark Richt and Washaun Ealey with a sincere apology, then they are an embarrassment to college football. Regardless of what transpires, Spikes is officially labeled a thug. Hopefully Bama’s D is going to kick the crap out of Meyer and the Gators in the SECCG anyway. Hello Tony: Yes, the LSU TIGERS continue to improve each week. As long as the team makes improvements each week, they there is always a chance of victory on Saturday. LSU has had a difficult time getting the ball to exceptional athletes in the first half of this season. Their critics say that beating mere SEC foes doesn’t qualify for “beating anybody”. Oh well. The point is, that at any given week in the season, the Tigers were (and are) getting better each week. I don’t know if LSU will beat Bama this week, but the Tide will be playing a better team than when they played Tulane, and that gives the TIGER fan reason to be optimistic.

GO TIGERS, whip the bloody hell out of BAMA. ! ! !

The shot on Tebow was classless and should have been a penalty and a game suspension in my mind. It could have easily resulted in another concussion. However, the spikes eye gouging episode was over the top. Should have been suspenede for the remainder of the year, minimum.

I seldom defend the dags.. Too many of their fans are totally arrogant (and yes, I know the jackets have a few of those too), and I can honestly say that I ave never routed for them to win a game. But this blog may turn me into a dawg fan next year when they play the gators. Anyone that could defend Spike’s actions is in my mind, total trash.

Maybe tomorrow you could write a nice retrospective on Herschel? I don’t know… every other outlet in this city has already done that. Oh, I know, I got it. A nice piece on how well Herschel has done in his career with his fine UGA degree.

Wow, Tony, you actually posted a response. I stand corrected.

Enough about eye goughing, bad uniform decisions, Ponder.

What I would like for you to comment more on is the issue of LSU still having a chance. Are you saying that a 1 loss SEC team should still play in the BCS game, even if there are undefeated teams from some of the “lesser” conferences? What if there are multiple undefeated teams like Cincy, Iowa, Boise, TCU and Texas. Can you put a 1 loss SEC team ahead of ALL of them? Is a 1 loss SEC team more deserving than a 1 loss PAC team or ACC team(that’s played 3 SEC teams)?

I know you say it is never going to happen Tony, but if we finish a season with 6 undefeated teams, wouldn’t it be nice to have a playoff to see who is really the best?

Do you really believe a one loss ALABAMA or FLORIDA, who have to play each other, isn’t a better team than Cincy, Boise, perhaps TCU and Iowa, but probably not Texas, would be deserving due to the conference play and strength of schedule?

I actually like the non-finality of college football that goes without a “PLAY OFF SYSTEM”. The banter among various fans would evaporate with such a finality. Its just too many games to be meaningful–the play off system. And with that, why trash out the bowl games with such a system.
No, the system ain’t broke.

Go LSU Tigers, be a one loss BCS champion, again.

Coach Richt has cancelled the Black Out for Tenn. Tech and Homecoming this weekend.

Saving the next Black Out for Shreveport.

If the Rainbows get hot (and get to 6 wins with Grambling St.), maybe a reunion of Grambling State and Coach Richt’s greatest win in the last 30 years.

Rumor has it Coach is going to paint little white bulldogs (with red LED eyes that light up whenever a hand is introduced) on all the red face masks of the black helmits.

And then Tony can write another meaningful piece about suspending Oahohoa Tachowimi…. and if they don’t do it then the WAC office should.

Okay. A 1 loss LSU beats Alabama this weekend, then beats Florida in the SEC Championship. Texas, Iowa, TCU and Boise State. — undefeated. My guess is that Texas-Iowa play for the NC and the SEC is shut out. Just a theory. Oregon plays Alabama in the Rose; Ga Tech plays TCU in the Orange; LSU plays Cinny (or Pitt) in the Sugary; and Boise State plays Penn State in the Fiesta.

UGA loses to Auburn and Ga Tech, finishes 6-6 (with a D II win) and does not become bowl eligible.

I’m neutral in this dawgs-gators hatefest but I saw the video clip and was thoroughly disgusted. I would much rather take that punch that Lagarrette Bount threw any day then have someone gouging at my eyes while I’m pinned down in a pile and defenseless.

Eye gouging can blind someone and detached retinas from accidental eyepoking in boxing, mixed martial arts, etc. is not that uncommon anymore. What Spikes did was premeditated and downright lowdown and dirty.

Even though Georgia got whupped again I did notice that Shawn Chapas was hitting on Spikes hard and often. I think Spikes was more bothered over having Chapas hitting him hard on every play then he was about what happened earlier in the game with his helmet being ripped off.

Anyway, eye gouging can maim someone for life and what Spikes did was far more egregious than what Lagarrette Blount did, especially considering Ealey was completely defenseless at the bottom of the pile.

I actually like and respect the gators. But now I like and respect the 85 man Gator roster minus 1.

And please don’t bring up the Georgia personal fouls like the facemask against James and the guy ripping off Spike’s helmet. The James facemask was just typical idiotic dumbass play that Georgia players have been inflicting on their own selves the whole season. The ripping off Spikes helmet was bad but truly was heat of the moment combat. What Spikes did was premeditated. It wasn’t a heat of battle type of play and there is a huge difference.

Last, I’m very disappointed that Urban Meyer only meted out a meager half game suspension on such a dirty play that was one of the dirtiest I’ve ever seen. How can Meyer possibly not see not only how dangerous what Spikes did was but also just how lowdown and dirty it was. 1/2 game suspension? The punishment does not fit the crime here. Doesn’t even come close.

One other really bad thing about Spike’s thuggery is that it takes away from Florida’s accomplishment of whipping Georgia for the 17th time in 20 years.

Instead of celebrating total dominance and remarking over the gators recent run in the series the gator fans are mostly relegated to defending Spikes and the conversation has shifted from the game’s results to the Spikes eye gouging.

That’s a shame because the gators really do more richly deserve the opportunity to sit back, poke their chests out a little bit, and reflect on their success over the last 20 years. Instead they’re having to deal with the embarrassment over this one player’s actions.

Anyone that has ever played football knows what Spikes did is pretty common, especially on fumbles. Anythin goes on the bottom of the pile. What Spikes did was bad, but is uncommon. To say that eye gouging is common, especially at the collegiate level with all the various camera angles, is absurd.

We have the technology to stop this. The leagues should review game tapes of every game played. Any player identified as trying to inflict intentional harm on another player (outside of play) is suspended. Minimum 1 game for first offense, 4 games for second offense, and permanently their after.

Both the UGA player that hit Tebow and Spikes should be suspended. the UGA player for 1 game and Spikes for remainder of year. It’s time the civilized people took control of what is supposed to be a “game.”

Tampa Wreck,

I understand your frustration, but you are going overboard. You can’t just equivocate attacking a player in a pile after a play is dead with an aggressive hit during a play. A late hit on a QB, a face mask tackle, or a hit out-of-bounds already draws a personal foul penalty — and that is adequate.

What Brandon Spikes did was assault plain and simple. It is no different from starting a fist fight with another player. Football is a game of controlled aggression. If you want to remove ALL aggression from the game, then we would need to just start playing touch football.

I know that you hate all of this eye-gouging discussion, rather than discussing Florida’s victory. You can’t blame that on Georgia fans. You have only Brandon Spikes to blame.

All you Georgia Spikes haters. Watch the video of your NICK WILLIAMS taking the dirtiest, cheap shot ever on a defenseless Tim Tebow, long after a play was over and when the refs were not looking. You can see him look around and then go hard into Tebows upper torso, obviously trying to take Tebow out of the game with an illegal hit. He could have hurt a person who just recovered from a concussion with that CLASSLESS hit. This type of crap went on all day from Georgia players. So shut the _ _ _ _ up about Spikes!!! You, too, Barnhart. You are blind with your one sided story about Spikes, chosing to total ignore the uncontrolled, classless, and thug-like play of the Georgia players during the game.

Our program is just plain tired. The Spikes video does look a lot worse than it was. Like many have said a LOT worse goes on in the piles that is never captured on tape.

I’m sure I’m going to get blasted by fellow Dawgs or accused of not being a “real fan” or “fair weathered” for what I’m about to say but deep down everyone will know it’s true and sometimes the truth hurts. So here goes:

I was ASHAMED of the way our players acted on Sat. and Tampa Gator and others are absolutely right there were several acts of thuggery on the part of the Dawgs and it’s no wonder Spikes reacted the way he did. If you’re going to call out Spikes that’s fine, but please don’t turn a blind eye to what our Dawgs did and the lack of class displayed by many on Sat.
The players are obviously frustrated because the coaches are doing a p*ss-poor job of preparing them to play. We have talent but absolutely NO DISCIPLINE OR SENSE OF DIRECTION.
The coaches had TWO weeks to prep for Florida, and game film from two teams (Arkansas & Miss St) that gave blueprints on how to stop the gators. Does Willie even TRY to put together a different game plan? No he just marches them out there with the same tired scheme. This is the SEC not the MAC, you CAN NOT HAVE A ONE SIZE FITS ALL DEFENSE AND EXPECT TO STOP ANYONE!!!

Bobo actually called a decent game but he’s handicaped by Joe T IV and his noodle arm. 21 turnovers & Cox is responsible for 13 of them! But he gives us the best chance to win?! Based on WHAT EXACTLY? Oh because the coaches run Logan out there in terrible situations with 3mins or less in a game for 1-2 plays (less than 10 snaps on the year). Is it what they see in practice? Doubtful, Murray and Gray BOTH looked MUCH better than Cox in the spring game. No these coaches had their mind made up and never even had an open competition.

All we heard ALL SPRING AND SUMMER LONG was we’re going to address the penalties, and we actually have gotten WORSE!!! They make this a focus and the result is the problem gets WORSE!!! Are you kidding me??!!

I personally think some of the coaches (and we know which ones) have simply lost the players. These players aren’t stupid, they know the coaches game plans flat out stink and that if they do what’s asked of them they will be out of position to make a play or they have NO CHANCE to win. It’s no wonder they don’t care, why should they? The coaches obviously don’t. 2 weeks to prep for the number one team in the nation and they act like it’s vanderbilt. I asked my 10yr old what he thought and he said as much. “Dad, I thought this was supposed to be a big game for the Dawgs. They act like it’s just any old game. Why do they make so many mistakes?” Maybe a little more time should have been spent on the game plan instead of fashion design. I don’t see Meyer, Saban, or Miles worried about what their players are wearing.
The coaches are soft PERIOD. And GUESS WHAT? Players take on the persona of their coaches. So you want to know what kind of preperation and attitude towards the job the coaches are taking, just look at the players.

Lack of preperation by the coaches = poor play by the players
Lack of coaching fundamentals and focus = poor tackling and mental errors
Lack of emotion and fire from coaches = uninspired play by players
Coaches don’t care = Players don’t care.
Did anyone catch Willie trying to yell at Boykin and Jones on the sideline after a play as they came off the field? Notice how they just blew him off and walked right by? Why is that? They know he doesn’t know what he’s doing so they don’t respect him.
Think about it this way…If you went into work and your employer did not give you the tools you needed to do your job effectively, and the directives he/she laid out always put you in a position to lose to your competitors, and then when things didn’t work, the same boss that did that, blamed you (employee) for why things didn’t work. How much respect would you have for your company or boss? How much effort would you put out for your company or boss?
Welcome to the current UGLY state of UGA football. Anyone who thinks we’re simply missing Knowshon and Stafford and that this is a “Rebuilding year” is sadly mistaken. We have major issues.
Why would CMR feel the need to use a gimick to motivate his players to play against Florida? Shouldn’t the embarrassment of what happened last year be enough? Perhaps we’re looking at this wrong. Perhaps he’s trying to motivate them to play for the COACHES because the coaches have lost this team.
Bottom line, our players went out and tried to bully and intimidate the gators and got b*tch slapped for the effort. Until we get coaches who will re-install discipline and hard nosed football played with CLASS AND PASSION we can expect more of the same. I wonder why Van Gorder decided to leave? Wonder why Kirby Smart couldn’t leave fast enough. Winners won’t tolerate a loser mentality. The players are rebeling the only way they know how. They know we have incompetence all over this staff. Mark it down, this is going to be one of the ugliest offseasons in UGA history. The ugliness and stench of what’s going on is starting to be exposed slowly and gaining momentum. The “coach-speak” is old and is no longer covering up the real problems.
Go ahead and call me a fair weather fan, not a real fan, or whatever, but if those of you who disagree would pull your head out of the sand and really look at the program you will find I’m not off in my statements. I will tell you this I was a season ticket holder in 1995 (Goff’s last year) I sat in Sanford for the final tick of the 52-17 beatdown and the rest of that season. I will say this. Ray Goff may have been in over his head, but at least he CARED! At least his teams played with passion and fire. I’m tired of the “Aw Shucks, everything’s fine” crap.
I KNOW CMR has brought the program back a long way, but he’s been resting on his laurels the past two seasons and we have major slipage going on.
Get the ship right or get out!!!
Go Dawgs!
