If Florida doesn’t suspend Spikes, SEC office should

So what did we learn over the weekend?

1. If Florida doesn’t suspend Brandon Spikes, then the SEC office should. Unless the video below has been doctored, this is simply unacceptable from a college football player. Spikes is a great player. He is also an emotional player. And he clearly let his emotions get the best of him when he stuck his hand inside Waushan Ealey’s facemask. My hope is that Florida coach Urban Meyer looks at the video, is horrified, and suspends Spikes for at least one game. Spikes needs a reality check. Look, I know enough former players who have told me that a lot of bad things happen in pileups. But this is right out in the open and everything was caught on camera. This is a player intentionally trying to hurt another player. It’s simple: If coaches are going to be held accountable for their actions and officials are going to be held accountable for their mistakes, then players must be held accountable for what they do. There is no place in the game for something like this.

We just learned a little while ago that Spikes will be suspended for the first half of the game against Vanderbilt on Saturday. I would have done it for an entire game, but I’m not going to quibble with the decision. It sends the message needs to be sent.

2. Georgia should never, EVER, EVER wear black helmets, black jerseys, or black pants again. Look, I understand. Georgia coach Mark Richt was trying to do something to give his guys a little extra “umph” as they went to Jacksonville to play No. 1 Florida. But it didn’t work. It never had a chance to work because, like we said last week, Georgia is such a fundamentally unsound football team. Georgia is now 119th out of 120 Division I-A teams in turnover margin (minus-15). That means Georgia has committed 21 turnovers and gained only six. Only one team in college football (Texas Tech) has committed more than Georgia’s 74 penalties.

The fact of the matter is that Georgia is not a well-coached football team. The head coach has proven he knows how to win in the SEC so he should be given every opportunity to fix what is wrong. But there is definitely something missing at Georgia.

By the way: You can repaint the helmets. But burn the black pants. And do it now.

3. Christian Ponder is a gamer. The Florida State quarterback took a serious shot to the ribs early in Saturday’s game with N.C. State. But Ponder played through the pain and led Florida State on the winning touchdown drive late to beat the Wolfpack 45-42. Ponder completed 26 of 40 passes for 266 yards. The week before he completed 33 of 40 and rallied Florida State from a 24-6 deficit for a victory at North Carolina. This guy is going to be on a bunch of Heisman lists next season. Just an aside here: Ponder’s heroics came before a crowd of only 67,712 at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee. That’s the smallest home crowd in 16 years.

4. LSU is still in the hunt for the national championship: People forget about the Tigers after they lost 13-3 to No. 1 Florida on Oct. 10. But LSU (7-1) plays No. 3 Alabama in Tuscaloosa on Saturday. Win that one and the Tigers will probably get a shot at No. 1 Florida on Dec. 5 at the SEC championship game. A win there should put them in Pasadena. Now I think Alabama is going to win the game on Saturday. But LSU is starting to figure out some things on offense and is flying very confidently under the radar.

5. Georgia Tech had better not sleep on Wake Forest or Duke. Wake Forest (4-5) had Miami beat in Winston-Salem and let it slip away (28-27) after QB Riley Skinner got hurt. Three of its losses are by three points and another is by one point. The only blowout loss it has had was to Clemson (38-3). Duke (5-3), which hosts Georgia Tech next week, is really starting to figure some things out in the second year under David Cutcliffe. If Duke wins at North Carolina this week and Tech beats Wake Forest, first place in the Coastal Division will be on the line when Tech goes to Wallace Wade Stadium on Nov. 14.

Stupid people do stupid things. Guess he has this to follow him around now for the rest of his career. If he tries that sh!t in the NFL he will get his a$$ kicked 10 ways to Sunday. I don’t think Slive will do diddly so it will be up to Meyer and the Florida staff to sit him a game. Not much left on the schedule so it won’t hurt them at all. Didn’t that Oregon kid get suspended for a few games? I agree with Barnhart too that if they have film of a UGA player intentionally doing soemthing like this then go after them too.

No excuse for that. It wasn’t like it was a slight attempt at a poke he had his whole arm in the freaking helment working it in there.

I didn’t like that no call hit on Tebow earlier in the game either on that hand off, I thought that was a cheap shot by our guy but nothing to extent of this.

Spikes was trying to pry the ball. An eyeball. His helmet came off because he doesn’t know how to strap it on. Probably done intentionally.

Here’s a thought. Keep the black uniforms of shame until they do something right. Don’t let them have their silver britches back until they turn it around. I love my dawgs but they are making it real g=hard to do these days. And are y’all really surprised that a Florida player would do that? I mean, come on, their QB is the biggest phony to ever don a uniform. They’re all scum.

It doesn’t look good when you get your arse whooped again by your rival and you complain about crap going on in the pile. Since Spikes was dumb enough to get caught, he should face a punishment, but this stuff has been going on forever.

I heard Mark Richt will order a RedOut for the big game against Tennessee (Tech)–all red, including pants, jerseys, socks, helmets, underwear, cleats, laces, belts, facemasks, chinstraps!! The players need excitement—need some motivation against this opponent. So get out the red and wear it Saturday!!!!

Why would you suspend someone for a game for an infraction that would have simply been a 15-yd penalty if one of the officials had caught it?

Tony I agree with your take on Spikes and if a UGA player did the same suspend him too.

If black pants and helmets are need to get the team up for #1 UF in Jax the coaching staff has some serious problems motivating players.

The problem was not motivation the problem was the play calling. Kelin Johnson was on the call in show and said it was the same staff, the same plays, and that team a leader must step up. I think he summed it up when he said it was the same plays. Great coaches continue to change and adapt the game. UGA is stuck at 2005.

TB,
There is something more than wrong at UGA. This program has been declining for 2+ years. It boggles my mind, that they cant “get up” to play this game or the TN game or any other huge game. What are the coaches doing to these guys. We all know the D is garbage, and WM is gone after this year, but what about the damage being done to the brand and program as a whole. No killer instinct in these guys at all.

If the coaches cannot see that they have to pull Cox and start one of the younger guys, then they need to seriously look at their occupation. If the real reason, and we will find out, is that they are worse than Cox then God help us.

Spikes is garbage, total garbage.

Brandon Spikes should be kicked off the team. That wasn’t an ankle twist or a late hit. That was trying to gouge out a kid’s eyes that could leave him blinded for life.

And, hey, Florida fans. If you are defending that gross act, maybe you are blinded too.

I’m a GATOR fan thru and thru, but I totally agree that BS should be punished for that display of careless eye gouging! He could have changed this guy’s life for the worst, and for what? The thing that would hit him the hardest and possibly try to reprimand him would be a game suspension.
I am proud of the GATORS this weekend, they definately played like a #1 team. GO GATORS!

Who cares what Spikes did or what UGA did in the piles. There are plenty of things that go on and not caught on tape. If you don’t believe that stuff and worse goes on in a pile, you’ve never played the game. None of that matters and instead keeps people away from focusing their attention on the obvious….UGA stunk up the field.

SUSPEND THE PLAYRES WHO RIPPED OFF SPIKE’S HELMENT 3 TIMES. SUSPEND THE UGA PLAYER WHO JUST TRIED TO BREAK BRANDON JAMES NECK BY on purpose grabing his FACE MASK. GEORGIA PLAYERS GORGING TIM TEBOW EYES..GEORGIA WAS PLAYING DIRTY AND THOSE FLORIDA BOYS WERE GIVEING UGA PLAYERS PAYBACK. AFTER SPIKES SCORED HIS TD, GEORGIA PLAYERS TAUNTED SPIKES,BUT SPIKES DIDN’T TAKE THE BAIT!! SOUR GRAPES GIRLS!

“Only one team in college football (Texas Tech) has committed more than Georgia’s 74 penalties”.

UGA has surpassed the dirty/ undisciplined play of FSU where Richt learned it. He must be proud to have outdone his previous employer. Richt is no longer even a mediocre coach – he’s one in the gang of thugs.

Ok, football fans – IF Brandon Spikes intentionally did “eye gouge”, it was wrong, and if the officials had seen it, a call would or should have made. If the call was made, I expect there would be a lot fewer comments on this issue. But this is after the fact, the final whistle has blown. Urban Myer is a tough coach, tough to his players, and tough to the opposing team. And I feel strongly he will address the video and act with Brandon Spikes. What will be the outcome? Who knows, but it is between coach and player at this time. I didn’t like seeing it and I’m giving Spikes the benefit of doubt mainly because I have watched Spikes play and do not know of any “off field” antics. I believe he is a tough, but clean competitor. This may be the exception, but again, I also strongly feel Myer will handle it.

Finger Poke by Spikes doesn’t blur the fact both offensive and defensive players have practiced this behavior for many, many years. Face shields are now approved gear per OSHA regulations for footballers. Wonder why..? Now, let’s address Helmet Rip’n and the such, shall we..?

Tony you’re shedding your normal un-biased reporting and letting your red and black show through if you’re JUST going to bring up dirty play by Spikes.
That game was one of the worst examples of unsportsman like unnecessary late hits and violence that I’ve every witnessed and UGA started it from the beginning of the game. It’s almost like the dawgs spent their whole week off practicing late hitting, going for the head, helmet take downs, and eye-gouging. Florida papers report at least three Gators were treated for eye-gouging injuries, including Spikes. I’m not condoning Spike’s actions if that is indeed what he was doing, but the dawgs played with unsportsmanlike abandon from kickoff and the Gators had to respond.

Aw c’mon whiners, he was just feeling around trying to find GA’s defense. If that was such a big deal, you should have retaliated. Best way to put a stop to it.

Now that the it is all over but the crying for UGA, how about turning your attention to the team down the street from you. After all, are you not suppose to really be Mr. College football? Nesbitt and Dwyer are having banner years and all you could talk about was Spiller of Clemson. And by the way, every week is a battle for GT, Wake is another opponent who could beat anyone in the ACC and your precious UGA in the SEC. Somehow when GT wins, it is always “oh they don’t play anybody” but do not see UGA playing these nobodies, why not play CLEMSON or FSU? we all know the reason why

Does UGA have to try a gimmick everytime we play a good team? We are not Oregon, leave the darn uniforms alone. We get our rearends whipped, AGAIN, and we look like a darn circus sideshow with our uniform changes. Leave the uniforms alone and get to coaching. WE AL KNOW UF BEAT US AGAIN, but after seeing Spikes on tape, it clearly shows that being a winning football team does not mean you have class. All UF fans should call Spikes and thank him for making you good football team look like a bunch of THUGS.

FIU is coming up on the gators schedule. UM will take this week to review the film and Spikes will play against Vandy(like they really need him). Then another week to talk about what is fair and just and Spikes will play against USC and SOS. so after the USC game, UM will decide that the play by Spikes was “not up to gator standards” and sit him out against FIU and bring him back for FSU.

That being said, Tony you are sounding like a soccer mom whose little darling just got knocked down going for the ball. I love the Dawgs, but we are not good, as you have pointed out,and until MR makes some changes, we do not have any hope of getting better.

You are one the worst journalist of all time. Not only do you pick on Spikes, who did make a dumb decision, but day in and day out you prove why giving yourself the moniker “Mr. College Football” is the worst thing to happen to journalism since…. well yourself. Spikes makes a horrible play indeed, but are you sending in video of the dirty plays your dawgs were involved in… no because you are the biggest homer EVER. The late hits, ripping off helmets, pushing and shoving, and kicking done by your running back Saint No. 24 who never hurt a fly… or kicked Spikes after a play behind the ref… send that one in too!

“I’m Tony Barnhardt and because my precious dawgs got beat up so bad, I’m going to get somebody suspended so I can feel better eating my morning Twinkie.”

This is probably not too far from the truth. Your argument that Spikes should be suspended is because he was caught on camera…… wow great insight….. if a Georgia player shanks a Florida player in the pile and it’s in the pile, nothing should happen to him because no body saw it????

I’ve had to read this crap for too long, and listen to it for too long on CBS. Everything you write or talk about is outlandishly biased. I hope Spikes does get suspended so he can travel to Georgia and gouge your eyes as well.

Brings back memories of the Holt – Graning play in the 1961 Alabama – GT game.

I agree, the visual evidence should lead the school to suspend him. They can do it this weekend against Vandy. If GT can score 56 on Vandy, Florida should be able to get 72 at least.

Spikes needs to be suspended permanently. It’s not just intentionally injuring someone with a punch, i.e. LaGarrett Blount, but intentionally trying to blind someone. If the kid is misunderstood, then he should be seeking counseling rather than playing a violent game. Spikes is a disgrace to football, just like LaGarett Blount, Marcus, Vick, and Albert Haynesworth.

Just think, how many horse lost the hair just so Spikes could have all that hair stuffed in to a helmet. Surely the only reason his helmet comes off is because dirty UGA players pulled it off. How can UF have such a good team, over rated but good, just look at you patsy schedule, and be so dumb? I know why, because all the bandwagon GATOR fans who know nothing of football come on a blog and open there blow hole and dont care what comes out. The REAL UF fans should handle this.
