If Florida doesn’t suspend Spikes, SEC office should

So what did we learn over the weekend?

1. If Florida doesn’t suspend Brandon Spikes, then the SEC office should. Unless the video below has been doctored, this is simply unacceptable from a college football player. Spikes is a great player. He is also an emotional player. And he clearly let his emotions get the best of him when he stuck his hand inside Waushan Ealey’s facemask. My hope is that Florida coach Urban Meyer looks at the video, is horrified, and suspends Spikes for at least one game. Spikes needs a reality check. Look, I know enough former players who have told me that a lot of bad things happen in pileups. But this is right out in the open and everything was caught on camera. This is a player intentionally trying to hurt another player. It’s simple: If coaches are going to be held accountable for their actions and officials are going to be held accountable for their mistakes, then players must be held accountable for what they do. There is no place in the game for something like this.

We just learned a little while ago that Spikes will be suspended for the first half of the game against Vanderbilt on Saturday. I would have done it for an entire game, but I’m not going to quibble with the decision. It sends the message needs to be sent.

2. Georgia should never, EVER, EVER wear black helmets, black jerseys, or black pants again. Look, I understand. Georgia coach Mark Richt was trying to do something to give his guys a little extra “umph” as they went to Jacksonville to play No. 1 Florida. But it didn’t work. It never had a chance to work because, like we said last week, Georgia is such a fundamentally unsound football team. Georgia is now 119th out of 120 Division I-A teams in turnover margin (minus-15). That means Georgia has committed 21 turnovers and gained only six. Only one team in college football (Texas Tech) has committed more than Georgia’s 74 penalties.

The fact of the matter is that Georgia is not a well-coached football team. The head coach has proven he knows how to win in the SEC so he should be given every opportunity to fix what is wrong. But there is definitely something missing at Georgia.

By the way: You can repaint the helmets. But burn the black pants. And do it now.

3. Christian Ponder is a gamer. The Florida State quarterback took a serious shot to the ribs early in Saturday’s game with N.C. State. But Ponder played through the pain and led Florida State on the winning touchdown drive late to beat the Wolfpack 45-42. Ponder completed 26 of 40 passes for 266 yards. The week before he completed 33 of 40 and rallied Florida State from a 24-6 deficit for a victory at North Carolina. This guy is going to be on a bunch of Heisman lists next season. Just an aside here: Ponder’s heroics came before a crowd of only 67,712 at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee. That’s the smallest home crowd in 16 years.

4. LSU is still in the hunt for the national championship: People forget about the Tigers after they lost 13-3 to No. 1 Florida on Oct. 10. But LSU (7-1) plays No. 3 Alabama in Tuscaloosa on Saturday. Win that one and the Tigers will probably get a shot at No. 1 Florida on Dec. 5 at the SEC championship game. A win there should put them in Pasadena. Now I think Alabama is going to win the game on Saturday. But LSU is starting to figure out some things on offense and is flying very confidently under the radar.

5. Georgia Tech had better not sleep on Wake Forest or Duke. Wake Forest (4-5) had Miami beat in Winston-Salem and let it slip away (28-27) after QB Riley Skinner got hurt. Three of its losses are by three points and another is by one point. The only blowout loss it has had was to Clemson (38-3). Duke (5-3), which hosts Georgia Tech next week, is really starting to figure some things out in the second year under David Cutcliffe. If Duke wins at North Carolina this week and Tech beats Wake Forest, first place in the Coastal Division will be on the line when Tech goes to Wallace Wade Stadium on Nov. 14.

Hello Tony: Yes, the LSU TIGERS continue to improve each week. As long as the team makes improvements each week, they there is always a chance of victory on Saturday. LSU has had a difficult time getting the ball to exceptional athletes in the first half of this season. Their critics say that beating mere SEC foes doesn’t qualify for “beating anybody”. Oh well. The point is, that at any given week in the season, the Tigers were (and are) getting better each week. I don’t know if LSU will beat Bama this week, but the Tide will be playing a better team than when they played Tulane, and that gives the TIGER fan reason to be optimistic.

GO TIGERS, whip the bloody hell out of BAMA. ! ! !

The shot on Tebow was classless and should have been a penalty and a game suspension in my mind. It could have easily resulted in another concussion. However, the spikes eye gouging episode was over the top. Should have been suspenede for the remainder of the year, minimum.

I seldom defend the dags.. Too many of their fans are totally arrogant (and yes, I know the jackets have a few of those too), and I can honestly say that I ave never routed for them to win a game. But this blog may turn me into a dawg fan next year when they play the gators. Anyone that could defend Spike’s actions is in my mind, total trash.

Hey Tony, Nice diversion! Let’s see… you had a choice many topics to write about today. Hmmm. Maybe one of the hundreds of issues at your beloved house? No! Or maybe something about Ga. Tech winning? No! And you chose…Suspend Spikes. Nice choice.

Maybe tomorrow you could write a nice retrospective on Herschel? I don’t know… every other outlet in this city has already done that. Oh, I know, I got it. A nice piece on how well Herschel has done in his career with his fine UGA degree.

Wow, Tony, you actually posted a response. I stand corrected.

Enough about eye goughing, bad uniform decisions, Ponder.

What I would like for you to comment more on is the issue of LSU still having a chance. Are you saying that a 1 loss SEC team should still play in the BCS game, even if there are undefeated teams from some of the “lesser” conferences? What if there are multiple undefeated teams like Cincy, Iowa, Boise, TCU and Texas. Can you put a 1 loss SEC team ahead of ALL of them? Is a 1 loss SEC team more deserving than a 1 loss PAC team or ACC team(that’s played 3 SEC teams)?

I know you say it is never going to happen Tony, but if we finish a season with 6 undefeated teams, wouldn’t it be nice to have a playoff to see who is really the best?

Do you really believe a one loss ALABAMA or FLORIDA, who have to play each other, isn’t a better team than Cincy, Boise, perhaps TCU and Iowa, but probably not Texas, would be deserving due to the conference play and strength of schedule?

I actually like the non-finality of college football that goes without a “PLAY OFF SYSTEM”. The banter among various fans would evaporate with such a finality. Its just too many games to be meaningful–the play off system. And with that, why trash out the bowl games with such a system.
No, the system ain’t broke.

Go LSU Tigers, be a one loss BCS champion, again.

Spikes should be suspended from collegiate athletics forever. There is no place is college sports for a player that intentionally attempts to permanently damage another person.

Heads Up Grambling State Fans.

Coach Richt has cancelled the Black Out for Tenn. Tech and Homecoming this weekend.

Saving the next Black Out for Shreveport.

If the Rainbows get hot (and get to 6 wins with Grambling St.), maybe a reunion of Grambling State and Coach Richt’s greatest win in the last 30 years.

Rumor has it Coach is going to paint little white bulldogs (with red LED eyes that light up whenever a hand is introduced) on all the red face masks of the black helmits.

And then Tony can write another meaningful piece about suspending Oahohoa Tachowimi…. and if they don’t do it then the WAC office should.

Or the Georgia player who made the late hit out of bounds? Or Tebow getting hit really late (it’s on YouTube)? Spikes was wrong, but there is room for several Georgia players in that boat!

Okay. A 1 loss LSU beats Alabama this weekend, then beats Florida in the SEC Championship. Texas, Iowa, TCU and Boise State. — undefeated. My guess is that Texas-Iowa play for the NC and the SEC is shut out. Just a theory. Oregon plays Alabama in the Rose; Ga Tech plays TCU in the Orange; LSU plays Cinny (or Pitt) in the Sugary; and Boise State plays Penn State in the Fiesta.

UGA loses to Auburn and Ga Tech, finishes 6-6 (with a D II win) and does not become bowl eligible.

I’m neutral in this dawgs-gators hatefest but I saw the video clip and was thoroughly disgusted. I would much rather take that punch that Lagarrette Bount threw any day then have someone gouging at my eyes while I’m pinned down in a pile and defenseless.

Eye gouging can blind someone and detached retinas from accidental eyepoking in boxing, mixed martial arts, etc. is not that uncommon anymore. What Spikes did was premeditated and downright lowdown and dirty.

Even though Georgia got whupped again I did notice that Shawn Chapas was hitting on Spikes hard and often. I think Spikes was more bothered over having Chapas hitting him hard on every play then he was about what happened earlier in the game with his helmet being ripped off.

Anyway, eye gouging can maim someone for life and what Spikes did was far more egregious than what Lagarrette Blount did, especially considering Ealey was completely defenseless at the bottom of the pile.

I actually like and respect the gators. But now I like and respect the 85 man Gator roster minus 1.

And please don’t bring up the Georgia personal fouls like the facemask against James and the guy ripping off Spike’s helmet. The James facemask was just typical idiotic dumbass play that Georgia players have been inflicting on their own selves the whole season. The ripping off Spikes helmet was bad but truly was heat of the moment combat. What Spikes did was premeditated. It wasn’t a heat of battle type of play and there is a huge difference.

Last, I’m very disappointed that Urban Meyer only meted out a meager half game suspension on such a dirty play that was one of the dirtiest I’ve ever seen. How can Meyer possibly not see not only how dangerous what Spikes did was but also just how lowdown and dirty it was. 1/2 game suspension? The punishment does not fit the crime here. Doesn’t even come close.

One other really bad thing about Spike’s thuggery is that it takes away from Florida’s accomplishment of whipping Georgia for the 17th time in 20 years.

Instead of celebrating total dominance and remarking over the gators recent run in the series the gator fans are mostly relegated to defending Spikes and the conversation has shifted from the game’s results to the Spikes eye gouging.

That’s a shame because the gators really do more richly deserve the opportunity to sit back, poke their chests out a little bit, and reflect on their success over the last 20 years. Instead they’re having to deal with the embarrassment over this one player’s actions.

Never Played The Game

Anyone that has ever played football knows what Spikes did is pretty common, especially on fumbles. Anythin goes on the bottom of the pile. What Spikes did was bad, but is uncommon. The only difference is that his actions were caught by the camera. It was just further proof that the Dawgs got their — kicked in all phases of the game.

Sorry but I think its you that’s never played the game. To say that what Spikes did gouging someone’s eyes is common is ludicrous. Stuff did happen in the pile like small sucker punches but I don’t ever remember myself or a teammate ever getting gouged like that in the eyes. To say that eye gouging is common, especially at the collegiate level with all the various camera angles, is absurd.

We have the technology to stop this. The leagues should review game tapes of every game played. Any player identified as trying to inflict intentional harm on another player (outside of play) is suspended. Minimum 1 game for first offense, 4 games for second offense, and permanently their after.

Both the UGA player that hit Tebow and Spikes should be suspended. the UGA player for 1 game and Spikes for remainder of year. It’s time the civilized people took control of what is supposed to be a “game.”

Tampa Wreck,

I understand your frustration, but you are going overboard. You can’t just equivocate attacking a player in a pile after a play is dead with an aggressive hit during a play. A late hit on a QB, a face mask tackle, or a hit out-of-bounds already draws a personal foul penalty — and that is adequate.

What Brandon Spikes did was assault plain and simple. It is no different from starting a fist fight with another player. Football is a game of controlled aggression. If you want to remove ALL aggression from the game, then we would need to just start playing touch football.

I know that you hate all of this eye-gouging discussion, rather than discussing Florida’s victory. You can’t blame that on Georgia fans. You have only Brandon Spikes to blame.

All you Georgia Spikes haters. Watch the video of your NICK WILLIAMS taking the dirtiest, cheap shot ever on a defenseless Tim Tebow, long after a play was over and when the refs were not looking. You can see him look around and then go hard into Tebows upper torso, obviously trying to take Tebow out of the game with an illegal hit. He could have hurt a person who just recovered from a concussion with that CLASSLESS hit. This type of crap went on all day from Georgia players. So shut the _ _ _ _ up about Spikes!!! You, too, Barnhart. You are blind with your one sided story about Spikes, chosing to total ignore the uncontrolled, classless, and thug-like play of the Georgia players during the game.

Hey Joe’s Sack…. FYI.. The gators sucked out loud until 1991 when Spurrier brought them back from repeated NCAA suspensions to a winning football program. They were Vanderbilt-South. Never came close to an SEC title. I think every team in the SEC “leads the series” against the gators. Now, I know math is not all that important in Gainesville, but to have been a football fan earlier than 1991 would not make one 76+ years old…. they’d be 20+ years old…just so you know, bless your heart.

November 3rd, 2009
1:20 pm

Our program is just plain tired. The Spikes video does look a lot worse than it was. Like many have said a LOT worse goes on in the piles that is never captured on tape.

I’m sure I’m going to get blasted by fellow Dawgs or accused of not being a “real fan” or “fair weathered” for what I’m about to say but deep down everyone will know it’s true and sometimes the truth hurts. So here goes:

I was ASHAMED of the way our players acted on Sat. and Tampa Gator and others are absolutely right there were several acts of thuggery on the part of the Dawgs and it’s no wonder Spikes reacted the way he did. If you’re going to call out Spikes that’s fine, but please don’t turn a blind eye to what our Dawgs did and the lack of class displayed by many on Sat.
The players are obviously frustrated because the coaches are doing a p*ss-poor job of preparing them to play. We have talent but absolutely NO DISCIPLINE OR SENSE OF DIRECTION.
The coaches had TWO weeks to prep for Florida, and game film from two teams (Arkansas & Miss St) that gave blueprints on how to stop the gators. Does Willie even TRY to put together a different game plan? No he just marches them out there with the same tired scheme. This is the SEC not the MAC, you CAN NOT HAVE A ONE SIZE FITS ALL DEFENSE AND EXPECT TO STOP ANYONE!!!

Bobo actually called a decent game but he’s handicaped by Joe T IV and his noodle arm. 21 turnovers & Cox is responsible for 13 of them! But he gives us the best chance to win?! Based on WHAT EXACTLY? Oh because the coaches run Logan out there in terrible situations with 3mins or less in a game for 1-2 plays (less than 10 snaps on the year). Is it what they see in practice? Doubtful, Murray and Gray BOTH looked MUCH better than Cox in the spring game. No these coaches had their mind made up and never even had an open competition.

All we heard ALL SPRING AND SUMMER LONG was we’re going to address the penalties, and we actually have gotten WORSE!!! They make this a focus and the result is the problem gets WORSE!!! Are you kidding me??!!

I personally think some of the coaches (and we know which ones) have simply lost the players. These players aren’t stupid, they know the coaches game plans flat out stink and that if they do what’s asked of them they will be out of position to make a play or they have NO CHANCE to win. It’s no wonder they don’t care, why should they? The coaches obviously don’t. 2 weeks to prep for the number one team in the nation and they act like it’s vanderbilt. I asked my 10yr old what he thought and he said as much. “Dad, I thought this was supposed to be a big game for the Dawgs. They act like it’s just any old game. Why do they make so many mistakes?” Maybe a little more time should have been spent on the game plan instead of fashion design. I don’t see Meyer, Saban, or Miles worried about what their players are wearing.
The coaches are soft PERIOD. And GUESS WHAT? Players take on the persona of their coaches. So you want to know what kind of preperation and attitude towards the job the coaches are taking, just look at the players.

Lack of preperation by the coaches = poor play by the players
Lack of coaching fundamentals and focus = poor tackling and mental errors
Lack of emotion and fire from coaches = uninspired play by players
Coaches don’t care = Players don’t care.
Did anyone catch Willie trying to yell at Boykin and Jones on the sideline after a play as they came off the field? Notice how they just blew him off and walked right by? Why is that? They know he doesn’t know what he’s doing so they don’t respect him.
Think about it this way…If you went into work and your employer did not give you the tools you needed to do your job effectively, and the directives he/she laid out always put you in a position to lose to your competitors, and then when things didn’t work, the same boss that did that, blamed you (employee) for why things didn’t work. How much respect would you have for your company or boss? How much effort would you put out for your company or boss?
Welcome to the current UGLY state of UGA football. Anyone who thinks we’re simply missing Knowshon and Stafford and that this is a “Rebuilding year” is sadly mistaken. We have major issues.
Why would CMR feel the need to use a gimick to motivate his players to play against Florida? Shouldn’t the embarrassment of what happened last year be enough? Perhaps we’re looking at this wrong. Perhaps he’s trying to motivate them to play for the COACHES because the coaches have lost this team.
Bottom line, our players went out and tried to bully and intimidate the gators and got b*tch slapped for the effort. Until we get coaches who will re-install discipline and hard nosed football played with CLASS AND PASSION we can expect more of the same. I wonder why Van Gorder decided to leave? Wonder why Kirby Smart couldn’t leave fast enough. Winners won’t tolerate a loser mentality. The players are rebeling the only way they know how. They know we have incompetence all over this staff. Mark it down, this is going to be one of the ugliest offseasons in UGA history. The ugliness and stench of what’s going on is starting to be exposed slowly and gaining momentum. The “coach-speak” is old and is no longer covering up the real problems.
Go ahead and call me a fair weather fan, not a real fan, or whatever, but if those of you who disagree would pull your head out of the sand and really look at the program you will find I’m not off in my statements. I will tell you this I was a season ticket holder in 1995 (Goff’s last year) I sat in Sanford for the final tick of the 52-17 beatdown and the rest of that season. I will say this. Ray Goff may have been in over his head, but at least he CARED! At least his teams played with passion and fire. I’m tired of the “Aw Shucks, everything’s fine” crap.
I KNOW CMR has brought the program back a long way, but he’s been resting on his laurels the past two seasons and we have major slipage going on.
Get the ship right or get out!!!
Go Dawgs!

Georgia Tech will play in THEIR conference championship game (sunny Tampa Florida) in hopes of advancing to the BCS Orange Bowl (sunnier Miami Florida).
