I went 7-3 last week because I picked Arkansas to beat Ole Miss, Miami to beat Clemson, and Boston College to upset Notre Dame. Still, your humble scribe is 59-21 for the season. So let’s close out the month of October with the Fearless Friday Forecast.
1. Georgia vs. Florida (Jacksonville): Florida is 7-0, ranked No. 1, but has a ton of questions about its offense. Tim Tebow is getting frustrated and last week against Mississippi State tried to make plays that simply weren’t there. But the Gators are due for a breakout game on offense and the defense will get LB Brandon Spikes back. Georgia has had a week off but it won’t be enough. Florida 27, Georgia 6.
2. Georgia Tech at Vanderbilt: Georgia Tech has won five straight and now has a chance to at least get into the BCS discussion if the Jackets can run the table and win the ACC championship game. When you’re 11th in the BCS, style points matter. Vanderbilt has a pretty good defense but it is hard to get ready for the Georgia Tech offense right in the middle of a rugged SEC schedule. Georgia Tech 35, Vanderbilt 10.
3. Ole Miss at Auburn: After stumbling against two good defenses from South Carolina and Alabama, Ole Miss is suddenly looking like a team that is capable of running the table. Dexter McCluster had 260 total yards on 29 touches in a win over Arkansas. Auburn (5-3) is struggling on offense after a 5-0 start. If QB Chris Todd, who has less than 100 yards passing in this last two games, doesn’t bounce back this one could get ugly. Ole Miss 31, Auburn 17.
4. South Carolina at Tennessee: Tennessee lost a very tough game at Alabama (12-10) last Saturday but showed some signs that things are heading in the right direction under Lane Kiffin. Quarterback Jonathan Crompton has completed 41 of 63 passes (65 percent) in his last two games. Montario Hardesty is becoming one of the best running backs in the country. This will be a very good game because the South Carolina defense is so good. But I’m giving the edge to the Vols at home. Tennessee 17, South Carolina 14.
5. Mississippi State at Kentucky: Head coach Rich Brooks and offensive coordinator Joker Phillips have done a masterful job since quarterback Mike Hartline was lost to an injury. The Wildcats now have a three-headed quarterback in Will Fiedler, freshman Morgan Newton, and versatile wide receiver Randall Cobb. Kentucky has scored 24 touchdowns his season and Cobb has nine of them. This kid is good. The Wildcats (4-3) are really beat up but I believe they get one step closer to their fourth straight Bowl. Kentucky 24, Miss. State 17.
6. Duke at Virginia: Duke (4-3) needs two wins in its final five games to qualify for its first bowl since 1994. The Blue Devils are 2-1 in the ACC thanks in large part to quarterback Thaddeus Lewis, the ACC’s No. 2 passer (1,972 yards, 14 TD), who had 371 yards last week against Maryland. Virginia, also 2-1 in the ACC, is trying to bounce back from a pretty good beat down by Georgia Tech. Let’s go with Duke in a mild upset. Duke 24, Virginia 23.
7. N.C. State at Florida State: Is anybody playing better than Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder? Ponder had one of the better games ever by a Florida State quarterback last week when he completed 33 of 40 passes for 395 yards in a 30-27 come from behind win at North Carolina. The Seminoles trailed 24-6 and Ponder had three touchdown passes in the second half. N.C. State has struggled on defense and will have a tough time handling Ponder. Florida State 42, N.C. State 17.
8. Texas at Oklahoma State: Texas has won 11 straight against Oklahoma State and four times since 2003 has had to rally from significant halftime deficits to win. After struggling on offense most of the season, the Longhorns and Colt McCoy looked pretty impressive last week in a 41-7 win over Missouri. Oklahoma State (6-1) will put up a good fight but Texas looks like a team ready to win out and play in the BCS championship game. Texas 31, Oklahoma State 21.
9. Kansas at Texas Tech: This is not the best time to play Texas Tech. The Red Raiders were embarrassed at home by Texas A&M 52-30 last week. Red Raiders coach Mike Leach not only ripped his players, but he insulted their girl friends (I’ll let you look it up). Kansas, you should know, is 1-10 all-time against Texas Tech. The Red Raiders are having some quarterback issues but they should still win at home. Texas Tech 31, Kansas 28.
10. Southern California at Oregon: After Oregon lost the opener to Boise State, which included the infamous LeGarrette Blount punch, the program looked like it was in trouble. But first-year coach Chip Kelly stayed the course and right now the No. 10 Ducks (6-1) are playing as well anybody. Southern Cal (6-1) is No. 5 so this is basically a BCS elimination game. USC coach Pete Carroll, who always has his teams ready for the big games, is 4-3 against Oregon. Autzen Stadium is a tough place to play. On Halloween night it will be even more so. Oregon 24, USC 20.

So Vanderbilt’s D won’t be able to stop Tech’s offense because of all the rugged SEC teams they’ve been playing?

Eastside, I’m pretty sure that is not what he said. It is hard to prepare for GT’s offense in the middle of playing a rugged SEC schedule. He didn’t say they won’t be able to stop it because of the SEC teams they have been playing.
Tony, I’m glad you didn’t pick us to win because in all likelihood we won’t win. I still believe we have a chance if we can not turn the ball over. Florida has lived off of turnovers in big games.

Fla Tide, you forgot punter. This is when UGA can shine, but they are really outmanned here this year. This is Urban’s senior class and they are good. Okie St does not stand a chance against with Bryant gone and I thought their RB was injured.
I don’t think UGA gets a TD against UF unless it is a turnover score by the defense or kick return. Bobo had 6 3 and outs against LSU and another 6 at Tennessee. The UF defense is better than both teams.
S Car. beats UT in a battle of defenses. I enjoy watching these game

I think the most shocking stat for both teams is the turnover ratio : Florida is -1 and UGA is -11( which is worst in the SEC). Of all the stats that are damming of Willie’s defense, this one is the worst! Turnovers can significantly change the complection of a season. Florida was +22 in turnovers last year which is insane! I always felt the Gators had a very good team last year, but what made them great was the turnover margin. If you don’t turn the ball over to them, and if you force some turnovers yourself, the Gators are very beatable even with their talent on defense. So the question becomes: who’s more likely to capitalize on each others miscues? Florida has a better defense, but UGA is coming off a bye week, and I’d like to think that our players and coaches haven’t been standing around with their fingers up their asses for the last two weeks( then again I never underestimate the total incompetence of our coaching staff). I think most folks in the media still think that this Gator offense has the potential to explode at anytime, but it doesn’t! They just don’t have a very potent record. UGA has the worst defense in the SEC and Arkansas is number 11. They only gave up 23 points to the Gators. MSU in 9 in the total defense and only gave up 29. These are NOT good defenses, and they held the Gators to under 30 points without a bye! I’m telling you right now Tony, the ONLY way the Gators cover this spread is if they get turnovers. Otherwise it will be another squeaker.

Once again, you need to do your research. People reminded you of it earlier in the week but you evidently didn’t pay attention. Duke needs THREE (3) more wins because NC Central is a provisional FCS school, not a full fledged FCS school. Therefore the win doesn’t count towards the bowl requirement. At least we now know that Barnhart doesn’t read comments about his articles.

To further illustrate my point, UGA is 12# is total defense in the SEC. Arkansas and MSU are 11# and 9# in total defense, and they held the Gators to 23 and 29 points without bye weeks. What’s your argument for that Gator fans? I mean wouldn’t you expect the Gator offense to “come alive” versus these teams? Either the Gator offense is very mediocre, or they have been slacking off the last two weeks. Personally, I think the Gators are too well coached to slack off that much! I just don’t think they’re that explosive on offense. Without the defense and special teams generating turnovers, the Gators won’t cover that spread.

When every week you hear the same thing – FL has been playing poorly and is ready for a breakout week – you start to realize maybe no breakout week is coming. I think it ends up being a close game.
One correction – Duke needs 3 wins in its last 5 to qualify as it played 2 non-FBS teams.
I also think GT will have a closer game than many expect. Natural letdown game and the 4th road game in 5 weeks.

I keep looking for a way to declare a UGA upset. UF is certainly weak and UGA COULD be a good enough team if they can find a way to fire on all cylinders for four full quarters. But they’ve not done that in two years now, not since Auburn in 2007. Even the Vandy win was an average showing at best (we’re talking about the same team that couldn’t score a TD on Army, yet managed to do it on my beloved Dawgs). Florida is vulnerable and UGA is rested and looking to prove something…but it won’t be enough. Dawgs go into the half with the lead, but Martinez’s failure to adjust his play calling to what the other team is doing means Meyer eats UGA’s soft-cover zone for lunch in the second half. UF wins by two scores but doesn’t cover.
And, Tony, Duke beating Virginia isn’t an upset. Check recent history (35-3 ring a bell?). Virginia is on it’s way to the bottom of the ACC and Duke is no longer a doormat. Duke may not blow it wide open, but they should win easy. So long as the boys on the field don’t get ahead of themselves.

GT4ever…are you kiding me? What hasnt GT done to prove they are a top ten team…we are 7-1 and no matter which way you slice it we deserve a top ten ranking. No one loss team in front of us has any greater signature wins…USC lost to Washington and has not beaten any good teams, Oregon lost to Boise St and hasnt beat any good teams, and LSU scored 3 points at home against a UF team that is not playing well…also they have no signature wins. The only reason we arent in the top ten is the fact we play in the ACC…when we lost to Miami we all but droped out of the rankings…the BCS system is bias. The ACC may not have an undefeated team but they surely have one elite team…its GT.

Then, a few weeks later, he picked UGA to beat Florida.

So, Mr. Bias thinks Florida is gonna mop the field AND the parking lot with GA.

Wiley, Tech is not an elite team. One decent season does not make you “elite” run the table with your BCS game, do the same next year, then you can start talking elite. “But the Gators are due for a breakout game on offense” Other than the fact that they’re Florida, what have you seen this year to suggest that Florida is due for a breakout? At some point you have to accept the fact that this isn’t the offensive powerhouse of years past. Lazy journalists and ESPN hacks continue to tout the Gators as an offensive machine to justify their pre-season predictions. Florida wins tomorrow, but it will be close.

Tony — Can you please stop touting your predictive capabilities with such blather as “your humble scribe is 59-21 for the season.” Do you want a golf clap or what? It is easy, especially at the college level, to pick win/lose on games. Your win/lose predictions are fine, as long as they just used as a vehicle for discussing the games, but let’s not make a big deal out of the results. However, if you want to show how knowledgeable you are, pick against the spread, otherwise your 73.7% record is not all that impressive and you just discredit yourself by trying suggest otherwise.

There is NO ONE that wants the Jackets to be a top 5, 10 team more! Elite teams have GREAT defenses. Our defense has showed promise at times, but for the most part, it has failed most of the time. It has failed against good and bad teams, making the assessment that until this staff recruits, we just haven’t proven to be of “elite” status… Team or otherwise. I would rather think logically/rational versus what my heart tells me. Rational thinking would suggest that we have a bright future, if this staff can recruit with the big guys. Florida beats Arkansas by 3 (with help from the refs), Miss State by 10. Yet somehow they are going to blow out UGA? Yeah right.

Clay, with that kind of attitude are you sure you didn’t go to Tech for grad school? You may be right that we are what we are, but UF struggled against LSU (who we should have beaten) and Arkasas (we beat them). If you don’t think we can keep it close I think you are blind my friend. I am not an idiot who is going to believe we are going to blow them out, but I always believe we can put it together and win. If I didn’t believe that, there would be no reason for me to be a fan.

Florida had one flash on offense this year at Kentucky. 30+ points in the 1st quarter. Unfortunately, we all know how that game ended and no one knows how big an impact the hit still has on Tebow. Florida can do waaay better then they’ve shown up to this point on offense. A lot of people say that it isn’t there. It still is, we’ve just seen one half of excellent play by the offense all season. On the flip side of that, our running game has been very impressive save two games. I think Moody has a “HERE I AM!” game this weekend. We have three excellent running backs that battle for carries and make the most of it when they get the opportunity. Maybe this is the game we incorporate the air attack. I’d sure like to see it beacuse this Florida team is very dangerous when both are clicking.

There is no reason to dispute this article. Richt and his staff have not done a very good job lately. That better change!!!
As long as Martinez stays UGA football will sink further into the depths of mediocrity until it reaches a level that only teams like Vanderbilt, Duke and UTEP have been.

TB,
I agree with you on most of these picks. Snead is goingto have to play well for the rebs to win. McCluster is going to have to have another big game as well. Ole Miss, however, has to really get after the Quarterback Saturday if they are going to win against Auburn. Should make for a very interesting game on the Plains. TB, I have a question for you. Saturday is the 50th anniversary of LSU’s Billy Cannon’s run against Ole Miss. Why didnt Ole Miss and LSU play tomorrow and why dont they play every Halloween weekend? They used to.
To all of UGA fans, I say this . . . Good Luck. I hope you guys can put a beatdown on Florida. That’s the optimist in me, however, Florida will probably prevail. Let’s hope Richt and company has one more upset in them.

GT4ever…I agree with you about the defense but they have made plays to win games…with the exception of the Miami game. I know how you feel as a tech fan because we have had several teams appear to be good only to have major let downs against inferior teams…but PJ is not Chan Gailey. We dont need 5 star talent to have a good defense…we had some good ones under Tenuta and now we are recruiting better…look at all the 4 star players we have committed to play defense. I was just pointing out that we are just as good as the other one loss teams…USC, LSU, and Oregon.

RablinRed – Apparently, I need to correct myself. It seems NCCU was not able to meet the required 90% scholarship rate that would allow Duke to count the win. So, you’re right, 3 more to get a bowl.

Tony,
as a UGA alum, you cannot put your desire to be right in your pick’ems over your school pride. I too think the Gators will likely win, but I cannot bring myself to pick Florida in my office pool. I feel that it is almost traitorous. Obviously you are obligated to show journalistic objectivity, but even so, in a pick’em it is anything goes… you don’t have to pick the overwhelming favorite. It is too late for you to rectify your wrongdoing this weekend Tony, but I implore you to consider your roots when clean old fashioned hate week arrives.

One thing I’ll say as a UGA fan about Tech, I haven’t seen that team quit on a game yet. I honestly think UGA has better athletic talent overall, but I would give anything to see our guys play with that fire (not to mention seeing a little fire from ol CMR as well). Josh Nesbitt has run over more people than Samuel, who was supposed to be a bruiser. When the games on the line, there’s no question who is taking over for them and who they’re riding to the finish. There will be a certain guy in JAX tomorrow (more than likely dressed as Superman or Jesus) and everyone knows he will take over if it’s close. Where is that for UGA? I’ll concede that A.J. can take over a game, but who’s gonna get him the ball? I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, UGA lacks leadership and accountability. I’ve always felt players can respond better to peer leadership, weather it’s someone holding you accountable or leading by example. Our young guys need it and I just haven’t seen it.

I’m no “Mr. College Football”, but if I had to answer as to who is playing better quarterback-from a solely statistical standpoint, I would venture there’s a guy in South Bend that might be playing a little better than Ponder.
Just sayin’.

ok…time for a little history lesson.
1. 1997 – UGA gets pounded by Tennessee, goes to jacksonville a big underdog vs. the number one ranked defense in college football. Robert Edwards shreds the vaunted Gator D and weak armed mike bobo uses a short passing game to win. Joe Kyne’s defense makes sure that the gators quarterback -whom I believe is an ABC commentator now – spends most of the afternoon on his back.
2. 2006- Tebow is hurt, UGA suffers early SEC loss to USC and gets pounded by UT in Knoxville. The Staph infection rides Knowshown Moreno’s legs to an upset of the gators. UGA’s defense makes sure that Tebow spends most of the afternoon on his back….while still giving up lots of points.
and now, we move to the present day….one would say….history is on our side.
Yes, UGA has a similar story line to ‘97 and ‘06. BUT…here’s the difference….
1. We have no Knowshown, or Robert Edwards – and that is the way georgia wins in Jacksonville…a strong running game.
2. We have no defense.
‘yall keep drinking whatever you are drinking. time to take off the rose colored glasses and deal with the facts…..

First of all you know I am a UGA grad and a major fan. However it may shock you that the game I would most like to attend this week is the Oregon/SC game Sat night. My mother went to Oregon and I have been to a couple of games which include the95′ Rose Bowl when the Ducks played Jo-Pa and Kerry Collins. Anyways, Eugene is an awesome town and the fans will be rockin’ on Halloweens Night. I would love to be at that one having a couple of cold beers. Plus it won’t be 90degrees like it is in Jax.
As far as my Dawgs are concerned I really thought yesterday my team would pull out a victory but after reading your blog I now have major concerns: Can we run the ball? Can Willie change his defense based on what UF gives us? Will Coach Fab pooch kick it if we can score? Will Coach Bobo try and spread the field out in order to get our play-makers the ball? I hope the answer is “yes” but we will soon see. The question is what happens if we get blown out? Say 65-3 or something? This is a BIG, BIG game for CMR & co.

Keep on crying little dog fans- you punks like to dish it out but sure can’t take it. Bunch of little boys cyring because their favorite team is down this year….boo freaking hoo. Welcome to reality.
I actually hope you win tomorrow, as I have said on the other blogs. Win the next four and get to 8-3, get ranked again top 25. Tech needs some SOS help to move up in the BCS. Come on, you can do it! Also – Urban is a even bigger tool than Mark Richt.

UGA fans have it easy. They don’t have to worry about where they are in the polls or the BCS. They don’t have to guess at which bowl game they’ll go to so they can make travel plans. They don’t have to worry about finding SEC Champ game tickets. They don’t have to worry about their QB or RB getting injured, because their backups sure couldn’t be any worse. They don’t have to worry about whether or not their head coach will make good decisions, because they already should have accepted the fact that’s he’s a mediocre coach.

Would that be as big a joke as UGA being ranked #1 in the preseason polls last year? We earned our ranking by beating the teams on our schedule. You lost your ranking in embarrassing fashion by losing to the teams on yours.

BuzztheKiller good luck tomorrow too! Nov 28th is coming and I want you bugs way up in the polls…the beatdown will be much sweeter that way..see I doubt your bunch can lose to UGA and still end up at the end of the year with a higher ranking than UGA..reason the shock will destroy any chance of a Bug bowl win…just not tough enough to overcome..sad really..

Somebody help me understand this – because UNC can make a game winning field goal and UT cannot (misses 3 in fact) the ACC is an inferior conference? Who has UNC lost to out of conference? How does this win reflect poorly on the ACC?
So, basically, last year when an unranked Ole Miss teams beats mighty Florida in the swamp that shows how stong the SEC is, but this year when a talented UNC squad finally puts it together to beat VT on the road that shows how weak the ACC is. That logic is nothing but a double standard.
Finally how sad is it that the only ammunition UGA fans have against GT is that a team Tech dominated just got beat by another team that Tech dominated…
