Gators roll over Dawgs to stay at No. 1

I went 7-3 last week because I picked Arkansas to beat Ole Miss, Miami to beat Clemson, and Boston College to upset Notre Dame. Still, your humble scribe is 59-21 for the season. So let’s close out the month of October with the Fearless Friday Forecast.

1. Georgia vs. Florida (Jacksonville): Florida is 7-0, ranked No. 1, but has a ton of questions about its offense. Tim Tebow is getting frustrated and last week against Mississippi State tried to make plays that simply weren’t there. But the Gators are due for a breakout game on offense and the defense will get LB Brandon Spikes back. Georgia has had a week off but it won’t be enough. Florida 27, Georgia 6.

2. Georgia Tech at Vanderbilt: Georgia Tech has won five straight and now has a chance to at least get into the BCS discussion if the Jackets can run the table and win the ACC championship game. When you’re 11th in the BCS, style points matter. Vanderbilt has a pretty good defense but it is hard to get ready for the Georgia Tech offense right in the middle of a rugged SEC schedule. Georgia Tech 35, Vanderbilt 10.

3. Ole Miss at Auburn: After stumbling against two good defenses from South Carolina and Alabama, Ole Miss is suddenly looking like a team that is capable of running the table. Dexter McCluster had 260 total yards on 29 touches in a win over Arkansas. Auburn (5-3) is struggling on offense after a 5-0 start. If QB Chris Todd, who has less than 100 yards passing in this last two games, doesn’t bounce back this one could get ugly. Ole Miss 31, Auburn 17.

4. South Carolina at Tennessee: Tennessee lost a very tough game at Alabama (12-10) last Saturday but showed some signs that things are heading in the right direction under Lane Kiffin. Quarterback Jonathan Crompton has completed 41 of 63 passes (65 percent) in his last two games. Montario Hardesty is becoming one of the best running backs in the country. This will be a very good game because the South Carolina defense is so good. But I’m giving the edge to the Vols at home. Tennessee 17, South Carolina 14.

5. Mississippi State at Kentucky: Head coach Rich Brooks and offensive coordinator Joker Phillips have done a masterful job since quarterback Mike Hartline was lost to an injury. The Wildcats now have a three-headed quarterback in Will Fiedler, freshman Morgan Newton, and versatile wide receiver Randall Cobb. Kentucky has scored 24 touchdowns his season and Cobb has nine of them. This kid is good. The Wildcats (4-3) are really beat up but I believe they get one step closer to their fourth straight Bowl.  Kentucky 24, Miss. State 17.

6. Duke at Virginia: Duke (4-3) needs two wins in its final five games to qualify for its first bowl since 1994. The Blue Devils are 2-1 in the ACC thanks in large part to quarterback Thaddeus Lewis, the ACC’s No. 2 passer (1,972 yards, 14 TD), who had 371 yards last week against Maryland. Virginia, also 2-1 in the ACC, is trying to bounce back from a pretty good beat down by Georgia Tech. Let’s go with Duke in a mild upset. Duke 24, Virginia 23.

7. N.C. State at Florida State: Is anybody playing better than Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder? Ponder had one of the better games ever by a Florida State quarterback last week when he completed 33 of 40 passes for 395 yards in a 30-27 come from behind win at North Carolina. The Seminoles trailed 24-6 and Ponder had three touchdown passes in the second half. N.C. State has struggled on defense and will have a tough time handling Ponder. Florida State 42, N.C. State 17.

8. Texas at Oklahoma State: Texas has won 11 straight against Oklahoma State and four times since 2003 has had to rally from significant halftime deficits to win. After struggling on offense most of the season, the Longhorns and Colt McCoy looked pretty impressive last week in a 41-7 win over Missouri. Oklahoma State (6-1) will put up a good fight but Texas looks like a team ready to win out and play in the BCS championship game. Texas 31, Oklahoma State 21.

9. Kansas at Texas Tech: This is not the best time to play Texas Tech. The Red Raiders were embarrassed at home by Texas A&M 52-30 last week. Red Raiders coach Mike Leach not only ripped his players, but he insulted their girl friends (I’ll let you look it up). Kansas, you should know, is 1-10 all-time against Texas Tech. The Red Raiders are having some quarterback issues but they should still win at home. Texas Tech 31, Kansas 28.

10. Southern California at Oregon: After Oregon lost the opener to Boise State, which included the infamous LeGarrette Blount punch, the program looked like it was in trouble. But first-year coach Chip Kelly stayed the course and right now the No. 10 Ducks (6-1) are playing as well anybody. Southern Cal (6-1) is No. 5 so this is basically a BCS elimination game. USC coach Pete Carroll, who always has his teams ready for the big games, is 4-3 against Oregon. Autzen Stadium is a tough place to play. On Halloween night it will be even more so. Oregon 24, USC 20.

So Vanderbilt’s D won’t be able to stop Tech’s offense because of all the rugged SEC teams they’ve been playing?

I’ve gotta admit, I haven’t heard that excuse yet.

Eastside, I’m pretty sure that is not what he said. It is hard to prepare for GT’s offense in the middle of playing a rugged SEC schedule. He didn’t say they won’t be able to stop it because of the SEC teams they have been playing.

Tony, I’m glad you didn’t pick us to win because in all likelihood we won’t win. I still believe we have a chance if we can not turn the ball over. Florida has lived off of turnovers in big games.

I’m sick and tired of all the anti-UGA pro Georgia Tech media this year. We own this state in college football, and everyone knows it. One year of luck, and all the writers are jumping off our bandwagon to Tech. That sucks.

Fla Tide, you forgot punter. This is when UGA can shine, but they are really outmanned here this year. This is Urban’s senior class and they are good. Don’t expect much of a game without some big breaks. Too much on the line for UF, they are seniors and won’t be looking anywhere except at UGA. GO DOGS

Okie St does not stand a chance against with Bryant gone and I thought their RB was injured.

I don’t think UGA gets a TD against UF unless it is a turnover score by the defense or kick return. Bobo had 6 3 and outs against LSU and another 6 at Tennessee. The UF defense is better than both teams.

S Car. beats UT in a battle of defenses. I enjoy watching these game

I think the most shocking stat for both teams is the turnover ratio : Florida is -1 and UGA is -11( which is worst in the SEC). Of all the stats that are damming of Willie’s defense, this one is the worst! Turnovers can significantly change the complection of a season. Florida was +22 in turnovers last year which is insane! I always felt the Gators had a very good team last year, but what made them great was the turnover margin. If you don’t turn the ball over to them, and if you force some turnovers yourself, the Gators are very beatable even with their talent on defense. So the question becomes: who’s more likely to capitalize on each others miscues? Florida has a better defense, but UGA is coming off a bye week, and I’d like to think that our players and coaches haven’t been standing around with their fingers up their asses for the last two weeks( then again I never underestimate the total incompetence of our coaching staff). I think most folks in the media still think that this Gator offense has the potential to explode at anytime, but it doesn’t! They just don’t have a very potent record. UGA has the worst defense in the SEC and Arkansas is number 11. They only gave up 23 points to the Gators. MSU in 9 in the total defense and only gave up 29. These are NOT good defenses, and they held the Gators to under 30 points without a bye! I’m telling you right now Tony, the ONLY way the Gators cover this spread is if they get turnovers. Otherwise it will be another squeaker.

Once again, you need to do your research. People reminded you of it earlier in the week but you evidently didn’t pay attention. Duke needs THREE (3) more wins because NC Central is a provisional FCS school, not a full fledged FCS school. Therefore the win doesn’t count towards the bowl requirement. At least we now know that Barnhart doesn’t read comments about his articles.

To further illustrate my point, UGA is 12# is total defense in the SEC. Arkansas and MSU are 11# and 9# in total defense, and they held the Gators to 23 and 29 points without bye weeks. What’s your argument for that Gator fans? I mean wouldn’t you expect the Gator offense to “come alive” versus these teams? Either the Gator offense is very mediocre, or they have been slacking off the last two weeks. Personally, I think the Gators are too well coached to slack off that much! I just don’t think they’re that explosive on offense. Without the defense and special teams generating turnovers, the Gators won’t cover that spread.

When every week you hear the same thing – FL has been playing poorly and is ready for a breakout week – you start to realize maybe no breakout week is coming. I think it ends up being a close game.

One correction – Duke needs 3 wins in its last 5 to qualify as it played 2 non-FBS teams.

I also think GT will have a closer game than many expect. Natural letdown game and the 4th road game in 5 weeks.

I keep looking for a way to declare a UGA upset. UF is certainly weak and UGA COULD be a good enough team if they can find a way to fire on all cylinders for four full quarters. But they’ve not done that in two years now, not since Auburn in 2007. Even the Vandy win was an average showing at best (we’re talking about the same team that couldn’t score a TD on Army, yet managed to do it on my beloved Dawgs). Florida is vulnerable and UGA is rested and looking to prove something…but it won’t be enough. Dawgs go into the half with the lead, but Martinez’s failure to adjust his play calling to what the other team is doing means Meyer eats UGA’s soft-cover zone for lunch in the second half. UF wins by two scores but doesn’t cover.

And, Tony, Duke beating Virginia isn’t an upset. Check recent history (35-3 ring a bell?). Virginia is on it’s way to the bottom of the ACC and Duke is no longer a doormat. Duke may not blow it wide open, but they should win easy. So long as the boys on the field don’t get ahead of themselves.

GT4ever…are you kiding me? What hasnt GT done to prove they are a top ten team…we are 7-1 and no matter which way you slice it we deserve a top ten ranking. No one loss team in front of us has any greater signature wins…USC lost to Washington and has not beaten any good teams, Oregon lost to Boise St and hasnt beat any good teams, and LSU scored 3 points at home against a UF team that is not playing well…also they have no signature wins. The only reason we arent in the top ten is the fact we play in the ACC…when we lost to Miami we all but droped out of the rankings…the BCS system is bias. The ACC may not have an undefeated team but they surely have one elite team…its GT.

It is easy, especially at the college level, to pick win/lose on games. Your win/lose predictions are fine, as long as they just used as a vehicle for discussing the games, but let’s not make a big deal out of the results. However, if you want to show how knowledgeable you are, pick against the spread, otherwise your 73.7% record is not all that impressive and you just discredit yourself by trying suggest otherwise.

There is NO ONE that wants the Jackets to be a top 5, 10 team more! Elite teams have GREAT defenses. Our defense has showed promise at times, but for the most part, it has failed most of the time. It has failed against good and bad teams, making the assessment that until this staff recruits, we just haven’t proven to be of “elite” status… Team or otherwise. I would rather think logically/rational versus what my heart tells me. Rational thinking would suggest that we have a bright future, if this staff can recruit with the big guys. Clay, with that kind of attitude are you sure you didn’t go to Tech for grad school? You may be right that we are what we are, but UF struggled against LSU (who we should have beaten) and Arkasas (we beat them). If you don’t think we can keep it close I think you are blind my friend. I am not an idiot who is going to believe we are going to blow them out, but I always believe we can put it together and win. If I didn’t believe that, there would be no reason for me to be a fan.

Florida had one flash on offense this year at Kentucky. 30+ points in the 1st quarter. Unfortunately, we all know how that game ended and no one knows how big an impact the hit still has on Tebow. Florida can do waaay better then they’ve shown up to this point on offense. A lot of people say that it isn’t there. It still is, we’ve just seen one half of excellent play by the offense all season. On the flip side of that, our running game has been very impressive save two games. I think Moody has a “HERE I AM!” game this weekend. We have three excellent running backs that battle for carries and make the most of it when they get the opportunity. Maybe this is the game we incorporate the air attack. I’d sure like to see it beacuse this Florida team is very dangerous when both are clicking.

There is no reason to dispute this article. Richt and his staff have not done a very good job lately. That better change!!!

As long as Martinez stays UGA football will sink further into the depths of mediocrity until it reaches a level that only teams like Vanderbilt, Duke and UTEP have been.

TB,

I agree with you on most of these picks. Snead is goingto have to play well for the rebs to win. McCluster is going to have to have another big game as well. Ole Miss, however, has to really get after the Quarterback Saturday if they are going to win against Auburn. Should make for a very interesting game on the Plains. TB, I have a question for you. Saturday is the 50th anniversary of LSU’s Billy Cannon’s run against Ole Miss. Why didnt Ole Miss and LSU play tomorrow and why dont they play every Halloween weekend? They used to.

To all of UGA fans, I say this . . . Good Luck. I hope you guys can put a beatdown on Florida. That’s the optimist in me, however, Florida will probably prevail. Let’s hope Richt and company has one more upset in them.

GT4ever…I agree with you about the defense but they have made plays to win games…with the exception of the Miami game. I know how you feel as a tech fan because we have had several teams appear to be good only to have major let downs against inferior teams…but PJ is not Chan Gailey. We dont need 5 star talent to have a good defense…we had some good ones under Tenuta and now we are recruiting better…look at all the 4 star players we have committed to play defense. I was just pointing out that we are just as good as the other one loss teams…USC, LSU, and Oregon.

Tony,

as a UGA alum, you cannot put your desire to be right in your pick’ems over your school pride. I too think the Gators will likely win, but I cannot bring myself to pick Florida in my office pool. I feel that it is almost traitorous. Obviously you are obligated to show journalistic objectivity, but even so, in a pick’em it is anything goes… you don’t have to pick the overwhelming favorite. It is too late for you to rectify your wrongdoing this weekend Tony, but I implore you to consider your roots when clean old fashioned hate week arrives.

One thing I’ll say as a UGA fan about Tech, I haven’t seen that team quit on a game yet. I honestly think UGA has better athletic talent overall, but I would give anything to see our guys play with that fire (not to mention seeing a little fire from ol CMR as well). Josh Nesbitt has run over more people than Samuel, who was supposed to be a bruiser. When the games on the line, there’s no question who is taking over for them and who they’re riding to the finish. There will be a certain guy in JAX tomorrow (more than likely dressed as Superman or Jesus) and everyone knows he will take over if it’s close. Where is that for UGA? I’ll concede that A.J. can take over a game, but who’s gonna get him the ball? I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, UGA lacks leadership and accountability. I’ve always felt players can respond better to peer leadership, weather it’s someone holding you accountable or leading by example. Our young guys need it and I just haven’t seen it.

ok…time for a little history lesson.

1. 1997 – UGA gets pounded by Tennessee, goes to jacksonville a big underdog vs. the number one ranked defense in college football. Robert Edwards shreds the vaunted Gator D and weak armed mike bobo uses a short passing game to win. Joe Kyne’s defense makes sure that the gators quarterback -whom I believe is an ABC commentator now – spends most of the afternoon on his back.

2. 2006- Tebow is hurt, UGA suffers early SEC loss to USC and gets pounded by UT in Knoxville. The Staph infection rides Knowshown Moreno’s legs to an upset of the gators. UGA’s defense makes sure that Tebow spends most of the afternoon on his back….while still giving up lots of points.

and now, we move to the present day….one would say….history is on our side.
Yes, UGA has a similar story line to ‘97 and ‘06. BUT…here’s the difference….

1. We have no Knowshown, or Robert Edwards – and that is the way georgia wins in Jacksonville…a strong running game.

2. We have no defense.

‘yall keep drinking whatever you are drinking. time to take off the rose colored glasses and deal with the facts…..

First of all you know I am a UGA grad and a major fan. However it may shock you that the game I would most like to attend this week is the Oregon/SC game Sat night. My mother went to Oregon and I have been to a couple of games which include the95′ Rose Bowl when the Ducks played Jo-Pa and Kerry Collins. Anyways, Eugene is an awesome town and the fans will be rockin’ on Halloweens Night. I would love to be at that one having a couple of cold beers. Plus it won’t be 90degrees like it is in Jax.

As far as my Dawgs are concerned I really thought yesterday my team would pull out a victory but after reading your blog I now have major concerns: Can we run the ball? Can Willie change his defense based on what UF gives us? Will Coach Fab pooch kick it if we can score? Will Coach Bobo try and spread the field out in order to get our play-makers the ball? I hope the answer is “yes” but we will soon see. The question is what happens if we get blown out? Say 65-3 or something? This is a BIG, BIG game for CMR & co.

UGA fans have it easy. They don’t have to worry about where they are in the polls or the BCS. They don’t have to guess at which bowl game they’ll go to so they can make travel plans. They don’t have to worry about finding SEC Champ game tickets. They don’t have to worry about their QB or RB getting injured, because their backups sure couldn’t be any worse. They don’t have to worry about whether or not their head coach will make good decisions, because they already should have accepted the fact that’s he’s a mediocre coach.

Somebody help me understand this – because UNC can make a game winning field goal and UT cannot (misses 3 in fact) the ACC is an inferior conference? Who has UNC lost to out of conference? How does this win reflect poorly on the ACC?

So, basically, last year when an unranked Ole Miss teams beats mighty Florida in the swamp that shows how stong the SEC is, but this year when a talented UNC squad finally puts it together to beat VT on the road that shows how weak the ACC is. That logic is nothing but a double standard.

Finally how sad is it that the only ammunition UGA fans have against GT is that a team Tech dominated just got beat by another team that Tech dominated…

collegeballfan, getting 25 touches by the TB spot won’t help against the Gators if they don’t also get yardage. Look what the Gators did to the #4 rusher in the nation (Dixon) last week. If our TB doesn’t make it across the scrimmage line often and with yards gained a large % of the time, then it’s lights out. Cox will get destroyed when we become one-dimensional. We’re now mixing up our offensive line for the 4th time. Guys playing new positions against this defense may not be the best medicine.

I think it is pretty funny that all these UGA fans think UGA can win based on the premise that UF has not been world beaters and “Should Have” lost to this team and “Could Have” lost to that team.

The part of the equation missing in that logic is that UGA DID lose to this team and that team and one other team too. Even if UF is not as good as last year, UGA is even worse.

Anything can happen, but it doesn’t add up. Florida’s defense is so good at every position they are not going to make many mistakes. This is a defense that has a couple of great players back that didn’t play against LSU who only scored 3 Points at home in front of 94,000+. A defense who has yet to give up more than 20 points yet in a game. Georgia’s D is going to have to play the game of it’s life to win this game. Good Luck!

GT rolls over Vandy. This “good D” that Vandy has is 85th in the country against the rush. Tech is the second best rushing team in the country. That just doesn’t match up. If it rains it is like the UVA game. If not this gets ugly quick. I’m thinking no rain it’s more like Gt-49 Vandy-21 with a late score from Vandy.
UGA turns the ball over to much to stay in the game against Urban’s boys. However, I do agree that UGA will score a touchdown. Cox will once again underthrow AJ, he will come back to the ball make a guy miss and score like he does once a game.

What makes Florida so dangerous, is they can sustain drives because Tebow converts 4th down and three with his short runs. It’s stunning that no defensive coordinator has figured out the answer. Quite simple really. When Florida is in that position (as they are many times a game), a clever coach will substitute-out his linebackers, shifting his defensive linemen back…and replacing his defensive line with the biggest linemen from the OFFENSE…thus giving incredible size and stopping power up front. That’s how to stuff Tebow in short situations. Somebody know how to get word over to UGA on how to do that? Because Martizez isn’t going to figure out such a scheme…and hey, I’ve got a job. However, stop Tebow in those short situations, and UF is vulnerable. Just sayin’.

As a triple Gator alumnus who has chosen to make his permanent home here in Georgia, I know I have a somewhat different perspective on the Florida-Georgia rivalry than many of my fellow Gators, and certainly a different one from most of my Dawg neighbors and friends.

As I always do around this time of the college football season, I ask all of my fellow Gator and Dawg bloggers to show some of the maturity, courtesy, good sportsmanship and old-fashioned Southern manners that most of us learned at our parents’ table. We can be rivals, and we can support our teams, but let’s not be intentionally obnoxious to each other. Let’s all try to exhibit good sportsmanship in victory or defeat. Athletic defeat is never fatal, and victory is never final. There is always a rematch, and another season. Let’s all try to behave like our teams have been champions before.

I continue in my contention, that if the dawgs can find a ‘leader’ to step up and rally the troups, the dawgs could become a force to be reckoned with! So far, the only players worth highlighting are Green, Curran and the punter. Green is hampered by a quarterback that has a tough time getting the ball to him (yes, I remember how this feels…remember Ball to Johnson?), Curran is spending WAY too much time on the field and your punter SHOULD be good…he gets too much ‘playing time’! I remain stunned that someone on that team hasn’t taken a stand in that locker room!

Regarding all this GT vs. UGA bantor…just look at the blogs…uga fans are spittin’ mad and crying for the heads of the coaching staff…Tech? We’re pretty pumped about things! THIS year, Tech is the team in the state of Georgia…just the way it is! GO TECH!!!

Diablo69,

UT didn’t “miss” 3 field goals. They came up short on one because of distance and on the other 2 they simply got blocked. Missing denotes the idea that the kicker just missed it. The reality is that Bama stuffed 2 of those kicks. Give credit where credit is due.

The ACC is a good conference with a lot of good teams but no great teams. In terms of overall winning % interconference the ACC is in no way comparable to the sec over the past several years. in BCS performance its the same thing. The ACC won its first bcs bowl game in 8 or 9 years with the win over Cincy of all people last year. Meanwhile the sec has won something crazy like 10-12 not sure of the number bcs bowl games in the same time span.

Same thing with overall bowl performance. SEC was 6-2 last year while the acc was 4-5. The year before the sec went 7-2 while I think the acc either had a losing record or was maybe one game over .500

And while the sec may have embarrassing out of conference losses from time to time like Bama-LaMonroe 3 years ago the ACC has these embarrassing losses with regularity against far lesser foes. This season look at James Madison, WIlliam & Mary, and Richmond. 3 embarrassing games in a single season.

The sec has also won 3 straight national titles and 4 of the last 6.

I’ve got nothing against the acc. They have a lot of decent teams and play decent football. But by any measure of performance they simply don’t stack up to the sec in the 2000s. Not even close in fact.

As far as this year, I don’t think any team in the country would want to face Tech’s offense right now. Not saying Tech is the best team in college football, not with that defense, but they are in the top 6-8 teams in the country, and on the right day and playing well on both sides, Tech could beat any team in the country right now.

Walsh and Butler will come up huge in this game. Field position will be important. Butler will need to punt them deep and make UF go 80 for points. Walsh will have oppurtunities for some long FGs; I don’t see UGA scoring alot of TDs on this UF Defense.

Also, early in the game UGA needs to go deep to Green and or King. Open up the underneath for #4 King and #7 Charles. The TE post route needs to make a return to the UGA Offense. If Charles is damaging the middle in the first half of this game, then as one person predicted, AJ will go for 10 and 100 yds. I am not even looking at the run game, it will be a non factor. Our run game will be short quick hitters to RB, FB, and WR. We may pop an occasional run, but nothing consistent enough to believe in. Charles in the TE post is key in this game.

As for defense, UGA needs to crowd the box with a 8 man front. Dare UF to go up top and beat us. Yeah, I know our secondary sucks, but it is not like Tebow is making 30 yard Comp at will. Thay have no verticle game. Crowd the box and do not let Tebow run 4 yard dive plays all afternoon. I say go 4-3 and walk #9 Jones down in the box. Jones or Dewberry needs to be in Hernandez’s ear hole all day. Hernandez is the key to their passing offense.

BuzztheKiller. You sound like a reasonable fan. That game against Bama should give the program a legitimate measurement as to where the they are. Last year, the project failed miserably in the Peach Bowl. Imagine what it would be like to play Bama, LSU, Florida, Georgia and Tennessee along with cup cakes like South Carolina, Auburn and some non conference foe like Okie State or Az. State every week. It’s a blast for the fans, but it’s brutal when you’re team is trying to win! Fans like ACC and Ramble really do your school a disservice by acting as if GT has arrived. The program is not only going to have to continue to win consistently which they have been, but they will need to get several signature wins OUT OF THE ACC. Until then, I believe the program will be looked at in the same light as this year’s TCU, Cinn. and Boise St. Good programs, but a lack of respect because of the schedule they play. If Tech is serious about getting national recognition, they’ve got to drop all the D 2 type schools and schedule a couple of big time non conference games each year because the ACC competition just gives you very little. Good luck with Vandy this week.

GT an easy winner over Vandy

People need to start respecting USC. It’s Oregon people…they’ve got tons of injuries, their best RB is suspended…yes I’m aware Eugene is a tough place to play in the pac 10 but USC is going to outscore them easily. USC offense is going to lay the wood on the Ducks. Something like 42-28.

But seriously GT fans, win with some class and act like you’ve been there before. Using the term UGay is childish and lame. I wouldn’t ever call GT the Georgia Institute of Fa**ots because I have respect for my home state’s schools regardless of who I root for(some of the fans, notsomuch…and that goes for all idiotic “fans”).

If you GT fans are confused about this, look at the Gator Fans on this site and follow their lead. Some of the BEST posters here are FL fans and you know why? HBTD, thanks, and I have enjoyed reading your posts.

I saw TB catching some flack on here for calling Vandy’s SEC schedule “rugged”. I have neither the time nor the energy to do the research but I would venture to say that the avg size of linemen in the SEC is close to the highest, if not THE highest, of any conference in the FBS (I’d venture to say Big 12 would be neck and neck with SEC). That said, the “rugged” part of the game is between the linemen on both sides of the ball and the running backs. If my assumption is correct (and it’s just an assumption at this point) then TB would be correct to call Vandy’s (or any other SEC team’s) schedule rugged. Couple that with the style of play in the SEC and yes, it’s rough.

I can hear the GT fans already…and here’s what I’ll say. The top tier of the ACC has size up front (esp VT, BC, and UVA), but top to bottom, it doesn’t hold up.

I dunno, I could be way off here but at least it’s ammo for discussion.

The two teams do not even play each other in regular season. Who are the sissys of these athletic departments tha sets up these opponents? At least, UGA had the guts to play Oklahoma State. LMAO The best thing we have going is the fact that you all have had a bye week prior to the game. Can’t blame it on that like you have in the years past saying that is why FL won. I hope the Ref’s call all calls correctly so you can’t whine about them. Let’s see what’s left. Bye week…Ref’s…Oh yeah. I hope all of your players are healthy.

The sadi thing is, when you all lose and you will lose. I’m sure you will find some other reason to say it wasn’t fair somehow…..Someone else’s fault as to why you have lost again. May be if you ask Santa for Christmas…….Naw, He’s a Gator fan too.

Zero tolerance. Slime is once again treating the symptom, when he should be correcting the problem…inept officials. However, it’s all about the money and the SEC makes plenty thanks to TV. The game tomorrow will be a lot closer than the oddsmakers have forecast. Georgia has talent, but is isn’t synchronized or properly motivated. A few errors by Florida could tip the scales, but Florida should win.
As far as Georgia’s record vs. Florida or Tech, that was in the past. Records before the current programs have very little relevance in forecasting how well any of these teams will perform this year and down the road.

Tech, Georgia and Florida all have a great tradition, but Florida owns two out of the last three BCS NCs, as well as two NCAA BB NCs. Therefore, I say with great pride it is GREAT TO BE A GATOR!

As far as all you Tech fans with delusions of national prominence, don’t get your hopes up. Remember what Florida did to Maryland in Spurrier’s last game as a Gator. The score was an indication of the difference in talent between the SEC and the ACC.

Don’t get me wrong. I admire Tech for having an ability to field a competitive team while boasting the highest SAT scores of any public university football team in the country. That being said, you are nowhere near ready to compete for the upper echelons of college football. You are ready to yank Georgia’s chain every year, and that is satisfying to watch.

Well said EW [see below]… thanks. Good luck to the Dawgs in Jax tomorrow … would LOVE to see an upset … not just for GA but for a COMPLETE SHAKE-UP in the BCS.

“One thing I’ll say as a UGA fan about Tech, I haven’t seen that team quit on a game yet. Jake – I was deflated when Tech left the SEC, but Coach/AD Bobby Dodd did on principle, rather than destroy the lives of recruits who had scholarships pulled after summer tryouts like at at several other SEC schools.

Awww gee, did it “destroy the lives” of the poor widdle recwuits that didn’t make the team? It’s not like they couldn’t play next year at some other school…

They knew they were vying for a chance to be on one of the very best teams when they entered try-outs. They knew that everyone wouldn’t make it. That’s how things were done in those days. You didn’t get an award just for showing up. they took their chances. Dodd was miffed because they wouldn’t try-out for Tech and because he didn’t have enough clout in the SEC to get the rules changed to forbid tryouts.

Dodd was a great player and coach, but he wasn’t the Patron Saint of student athletes. He got out of the SEC because he couldn’t compete anymore.

I wouldn’t count Georgia out in this game. They can’t win it if they play like they’ve played so far this season, but who knows? If they have a good game, then it could take them a long way against this Gator team. The Gators haven’t been particularly impressive themselves lately — they’ve just been winning. And they should win on Saturday. But they might not.

Georgia needs to play well and catch a break or two and Florida needs to play poorly for us to have any chance, but it’s happened before. A seemingly superior Florida team got upset by Georgia in ‘85. Twelve years later it happened again in the glorious ‘97 game. In fact, both games were 20 point beatdowns. Now, 12 years later can it happen again?

2007 doesn’t count as an upset. That Georgia team was better than Florida. We finished 10-2 and No. 2 in the country, they finished 9-4 and somewhere well below No. 2 in the country. There was just a perception at the time that UF was the better team based on Georgia’s poor showings against Tenn. and Vandy earlier in the month.

There’s no doubt that we are the lesser team this year. So let’s get after their rear ends like it’s 1985 or 1997.

As much as I despise UGay, I think it would be best in Tech’s favor if the dawgs beat florida. I say this due to our SOS. Since VT lost to UNC it really hurt our SOS significantly and will affect our BCS rankings. Tech’s football team is not respected by the pollsters because of our mediocre conference right now. If UGA, and I say IF they do beat florida and we beat UGA convincingly we might get some recognition. I believe that some of the teams ahead of us like Oregon, hasn’t beaten anyone that great to jump us in the polls. I know they beat Washington, who beat USC but I think USC is overrated as well. Cincinatti is another team that comes to mind. I believe that we should be ranked higher than 11th, but who am I to say what’s fair. Good luck Jackets! And THWG!!

Actually, Coach 0, Dodd’s complaints about other SEC schools recruiting practices was they would wait until after signing day to cut the players that they had signed a scholarship. That way they were prevented from signing with other schools. Dodd felt that once you signed a player to a grant in aid scholarship you had an obligation to him. Other schools did not. This was one of several issues that drove Dodd to leave the SEC. Look at his record. He was able to compete in the SEC. He just grew to dislike the mindset.

43 Dog, it would be more accurate to say “Georgia OWNED Florida”, since the bulk of Georgia’s victories were many years ago. It would be more accurate to say that for the recent past – - and more importantly foreseeable future – - that Florida OWNS Georgia. It is ok to acknowledge and respect past accomplishments, but to revel in them too much shows you have no hope for a future.

To the idiot that says said Richt wants out at Ga. Ga has one of the top recruiting areas in the country.(top 5). Much better than Fla State. The only reason Fla state had good teams is because Ga and Fla were weak (GA because of it’s Coaches) so Bowden raided Ga as well as Tenn. Richt has tried to close the boarders but now Tenn, Bama and SC and Tech are starting to hit Ga. hard. If Richt doesn’t do something about Martineze and the inferior Coaching staff the whole program could take a serious set back that would be VERY hard to overcome. Richt must get tuff. At Fla. State, he would be a complete failure. Fla State can’t recruit any more being in the girly basketball conference, the ACC.

“Coach O” – You go right on believing whatever works for you. A scholarship is offered, accepted, and after team activities have begun, the “Grant-in-Aid”, as they were called was reneged. That’s a hell of a way to operate as an academic institution.

And you go on believing that college football is primarily about providing academic scholarships to deserving young men. Dodd had a great record in the SEC, but Dodd wasn’t the HC anymore when he decided to get out of the SEC — he was the AD. The kids who went through tryouts understood full well that all of them wouldn’t make the cut. Just because they couldn’t jump to another team that same year doesn’t mean that they couldn’t play. We still have the same situation in college football, but we call it ‘grey-shirting’ now. Freshmen weren’t even allowed to play in those days anyway.

Dodd quarterbacked for Gen Neyland. You are never going to convince me that he was some kind of ‘touchy-feely’ sensitive guy. He was a hard-nosed, hard-a$$ed football coach. That’s how he managed to win in the SEC. He saw the writing on the wall. Tech wasn’t at the top of the heap anymore, so he abandoned the heap. Can’t say I blame him, but there’s no point in resorting to revisionist history to explain what happened. I remember what happened — I didn’t read about it in a book.

Maybe it’s wishful thinking but in the past Coach Richts teams have gotten better as the season progresses and although it was only Vanderbilt I saw some improvement on both sides of the ball. By the way some of you sportwriters had Vandy beating the Dawgs. The Gators have shown all season they are not the powerhouse of last year and with a few breaks here and there the Dawgs could pull out a huge upset.

Coach O

October 31st, 2009
9:47 am

I’m curious to see if Florida feels the need to open up their offense in order to beat the Dawgs in this game. Alabama and Florida have both been sand-bagging on offense since they entered conference play. Both coaches know that this season doesn’t mean squat unless they meet in the Georgia Dome in December. An ordinary football team can’t afford to engage in these kinds of shenanigans, but Florida and Alabama aren’t ordinary teams this year. They are both members of a small, elite group of football squads that are head and shoulders above the vast majority of their competition. They’re both coaching for the playoff game.

Why would they do this? Two reasons. You don’t want to give your opponent game film of your best offense and allow the opposing defense to nail down your every tendency and find every chink in your armor. SEC defenses are just too good for that. The second reason is that you don’t want to risk getting your play-makers hurt before you get to the Big Game.

Traditional rivalry games are the fly in the ointment of such a strategy. You never know, in one of these games, if the opposing team is going to come out and play over their heads. It happens. That’s why there is so much excitement about these games. Look at how well Tennessee played against Alabama. Think about the 2007 Alabama vs. Tennessee game. The same 6 & 6 Bama squad that lost to LA Tech pounded a good Tennessee team with five of their key players on the bench due to a last minute suspension.

Florida has a decision to make in this game and Alabama faces the same decision next week when they face LSU. Can they continue to get away with doing just enough to win — or do they have to lay it all on the line? It will be interesting to see.

Coach 0, I gave you the truth. Dodd never cut a player on scholarship without cause, unlike others in the league who were keeping players on scholarship to prevent others from signing them, then cutting them after signing day. If you want to revise history go ahead. Dodd was successful in the SEC. His records prove it. He had a personal feud with Bear Bryant over Bryant’s players lack of discipline. That, combined with Tech always having to share revenue from bowl games with the rest of the SEC, led him to leave the SEC.

First off, why does anyone address Tony on their posts. Tony doesn’t read any of the posts. He writes his column and never looks again, as though he is still writing a newspaper article.
Second, Tony likes to spout his record as a predictor, without ever taking into account point spreads. Not to hard to just pick winners and losers, and he still has trouble doing that sometimes.

Now, on the games, I am really pulling for the Bulldogs. If they beat UF it will make our game the end of November that much more important. Unfortunately UGA’s D just looks too pourous. Come on Dogs, channel some old Erk passion and hunker down.

Jackets roll over Vandy. Will be interesting to see how GT & UF fare against the same opponent on successive weekends.

What in UT’s games so far makes anyone think they are capable of scoring enought points to win against a decent D. SC and the Ole Ball Coach send Lane into another excuse rant.

The only other games of interest on the schedule are UT & Okie St and USC & Oregon. I think UT beats OSU but since it’s in Stillwater it’s going to be close. Would love to see that upset.
And if Oregon beats USC will Boise move up in the BCS since they are the only ones to beat the Ducks.

It would be nice if Tony would actually engage in a discourse with fans about college football, but he probably would get tired of the juvenile rantings of folks like Yellow Fuzz and RogerDawg and just do what he does now, post and forget it.

Coach O

GR82BAG8R,

Don’t pretend that I don’t know what you’re talking about. Dodd’s so-called feud with Bryant was all about Coach Bryant refusing to kick one of his players off of his team for hitting a Tech player who quit on a play before it was over. It’s always sad to see a football player get hurt, but it IS, after all, a contact sport.

Dodd’s contention was that he could divine the “evil” intentions of the Bama player from watching the game film. He argued that the kid should lose his scholarship because he “intended to hurt” the Tech player. Guess what? Every guy on the gridiron “intends to hurt” the other player when they hit them. Dodd should have taught his players that they don’t quit on a punt coverage play just because a fair catch is signaled.

Here’s an old SI article that discusses the debate over whether SEC football should be played for fun or for winning the game:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1147916/1/index.htm

There certainly was debate at the time. It was primarily the losing teams that didn’t like the hard-nosed, aggressive attitude that Bear Bryant brought to the SEC game. But that attitude is exactly what made the SEC the dominant football conference in the nation. You may not like it on a philosophical level, but you can’t deny that Florida and Alabama are at No. 1 and No. 2 right now because they are carrying on that smash-mouth, domineering tradition.

Bobby Dodd may have grown soft in his retirement from coaching, but he used the very same methods to rack up wins in the SEC when he was the Head Coach. He learned these methods from Coach Neyland when he played for him at Tennessee.

Tony don’t owe you squat. Picking winners is just a fun pastime. Picking point spreads is a fool’s game for gamblers. It has nothing to do with football. It has everything to do with separating a dummy from his hard-earned money.

Look Delbert,

I ain’t here to knock Bobby Dodd. He was a great coach and a great man. I’m just saying that things were more complicated than they seem when you try to discuss isolated incidents.

Paul Bryant also believed in scholarship, leadership and integrity. Neither of them were Saints, but both Bryant and Dodd were good men and great coaches. They lived in a very different time and they made the best of the environment that they were born into. There was a lot going on in 1963. I was there. I’m not telling you my age on the Intertubes, but I’m pretty old.

Coach Dodd and Coach Bryant had their disagreements, and it’s only natural that there are different points of view regarding said disagreements based upon one’s allegiance to a particular school. From an outsider’s point of view; both of these men are highly regarded, and whatever feuds they had are considered less consequential than their bodies of work taken as a whole.

I don’t doubt that Coach Dodd’s feud with Bear Bryant impacted his decision to leave the SEC, but I think that there was much more to his decision than just what Bear Bryant was doing. I suspect that Coach Dooley had something to do with it as well.

Between 1942 and 1952, Georgia Tech won four SEC Championships. In 1953, in the middle of an eight year winning streak over Georgia, winding up a thirty-one game over-all winning streak, ranked No. 2, Tech took on No. 7 ranked Ole Miss in the Sugar Bowl. They beat them 24 to 7 and won the National Championship.

Later in 1953, the University of Alabama won the SEC Championship. Georgia Tech would never again win an SEC Championship. When Tech got out of the SEC, they also got out of having to play the SEC. Being an Independent was a luxury. You could play anyone you wanted. Being in a conference is tougher — even if it’s the ACC. ;-)

Congratulations on your recent success. Your current Head Coach might not have exactly the same coaching philosophy as Coach Dodd, but that’s to be expected. No two individuals are identical. You got your first win over Florida State in Tallahassee in school history. The win over VA tech broke an 0-17 losing streak to top five opponents at Grant Field over the past 47 years. You beat the Virginia Cavaliers in Charlottesville, VA for the first time since 1990.

I get the impression that Coach Johnson thinks that conditioning, discipline and WINNING are very important aspects of the game. I’m sure that he also wants all of his guys to get a good education. So do Coach Richt and Coach Saban.

“Coach O” – Dodd had convinced Bryant to vote with him against the scholarship issue. Unfortunately The Alabama president showed up at the meeting instead of the Bear, and voted to maintain the status quo (I did get this from historical docuents, as I don’t recall it being in the paper at the time). So, the vote deadlocked at 6-6, and the rule stayed in effect for a few more years.

Okay, a truce on this. Tech had a streak of bowl games in a era when fewer than 20 teams got bowl bids. Tech had to share the revenue, which teams still do today, except with far more teams going to bowls, the hit against the sharing team isn’t a big, since they get other shares as well.

I agree completely with your final comment, and for Tech fans, Coach Johnson is in the right place at the right time. Tech has a home and home with ‘Bama coming up in 2013 in Tuscaloosa. AD Dan Radokovich is paying attention to alums and bringing some old rivals games back for the next decade. Win or lose, I’d rather see the team face the best.

Delbert D.,

It’s true. Bear Bryant didn’t actually have his hands on the levers that run the Universe. It was only an illusion. He and Coach Dodd probably agreed on a lot of issues, but Coach Bryant didn’t run the University.

Bear just didn’t agree that his player should be booted for an aggressive hit that didn’t draw a flag. I don’t intend to diminish the severity of the hit nor deny that it was a ‘dirty’ hit. A lot of dirty hits got passed back in those days, but most of them didn’t get called nor cause that much damage. By today’s standards, he probably would have been suspended, but they weren’t playing by today’s standards, or rules. I’m glad that the rules have evolved to protect the players from serious injury, but the rule changes aren’t retroactive.

Bear probably didn’t want to give up his scholarship advantage either. Was he prejudiced? Yes. He was prejudiced toward his team. He wanted to use every legal advantage that he could to win. I don’t doubt that he was willing to push around at the edges of the rules to find out just how much was legal. He wasn’t the only coach doing that.

Tech does look like they’re playing to win again. I could have passed last year off as a fluke, and frankly, they looked a little weak early on in this season. But they’re playing pretty solid football now. An Alabama vs. Tech revival will be interesting. I just hope that neither of the coaches have to wear helmets on the sidelines. ;-)

There needs to be an overhaul of the replay official position.

Refs on the field need to call it like they see it and not depend on the booth to catch their mistakes.

The replay official needs to be given a shorter time to look at plays and it needs to be overwhelmingly obvious that a play should be overturned.

It is amazing that millions of viewers at home can spot a call almost right away and the replay official seems to see it another way.

.

Coach O

October 31st, 2009

Viewers at home don’t affect the game and, therefore, don’t have to answer for their judgments. They have to look at all of the different angles. It takes some time. It already is required that overwhelming evidence exists to overturn a call on the field.

I say to all my Dawg blogger friends that your kids played hard, but lost decisively to a more talented and better coached Gators team. No shame in that; there will be another Satuday in late October when the sun shines on the Dawgs again.

I’m not exactly known for gloating on these AJC sports blogs, but I have to do a metaphorical victory lap today. So, that having been said and the olive branch having been offered, I simply say:

17-3

Cuz, gdawg~zoo, Alta~Dawg and others, I hereby claim the Florida-Georgia bragging rights for 2009-2010 under the terms of the Jacksonville Convention. Notwithstanding the fact that UGA still leads the overall series by 7 games (46-39-2), Florida has just completed the most lopsided two decades in the history of the series (17-3 or .850). No other two-decade.period since the series began in 1915 is even close.

I have a novel thought………..

Maybe CMR and crew should put more thought into game preparation, then what color their helmets or jerseys are.

The Dawgs cannot and will not compete for a SEC title as long as “slick Willie” is running the defense. The zone read defense will not cut it anymore against these spread and pro style offenses that Saban, Kiffin and Meyer is running.

UF beats the Dawgs for the 17th time in 22 seasons.

And to make matters even worse Kiffin chartered a bright red ga helicopter and flew to ga in his off week to recruit ga high school players dressed in orange and white.

Sad, sad day for the mutts.

Georgia’s offense is adequate, but that won’t get you far in the SEC. The defense ain’t good enough to make as many stupid mistakes as they make. Coach Richt tries to pass off the penalties as a ’sign of aggression’. Wrong. It’s a sign of a lack of discipline.

11-Red jerseys and helmets at home, white jerseys and read helmets on the road—that’s it
12-If you make a physical error, there will be discipline in practice, repeated mistakes you are benched
13-If you make a mental error, penalty late hits, dancing after making a tackle etc… you are immediateley benched, repeated mistakes, benched for the year
14-DEMAND perfection, repeat plays until all 11 players execute properly, reward good performance
15-Bobo takes new position elsewhere
16-Fabris ditto
17-Martinez ditto
18-Hire the best strength and conditioning coach in the country, move VH to head of player development/mentoring
19-Have your former WR (Bryan McLendon) coach wide receivers instead of running backs and have your former running back (Tony Ball) coach running backs instead of WRs
20-Go after the best OC, DC and ST coaches in the country, pay them well, demand accountability
