Five burning questions as we head into the weekend:
1. Will Tim Tebow break Herschel Walker’s touchdown record against Georgia? Walker, the 1982 Heisman Trophy winner, scored 49 rushing touchdowns in his three seasons at Georgia. Tebow, the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner, has 48 rushing touchdowns in about 3 ½ seasons at Florida. You have to figure that Tebow will break Walker’s record in Saturday’s game in Jacksonville. That’s a tremendous accomplishment for a quarterback, but it is worth noting that Walker scored five touchdowns in three Sugar Bowl appearances (1980-82). Those touchdowns are not included in Walker’s records because only recently did the NCAA start counting post-season statistics in career totals.
2. What will Lane Kiffin do if he gets a bad call against South Carolina? The Tennessee coach was reprimanded for the second time this year by the SEC after complaining about the officiating in the Alabama-Tennessee game. He complained that his team was called for eight penalties while Alabama was only flagged once, which is correct. He complained that Alabama should have been flagged for a penalty when Terrence Cody ripped off his helmet after blocking a Volunteer field goal. That’s debatable. After what happened in the Georgia-LSU game, there is no way that call was going to be made. He complained that Tennessee should have gotten one more chance at the field goal to win the game. On that one he was wrong. The rule is clear. Even if a penalty had been called, Alabama would have retained possession.
But what happens if Kiffin gets a bad call in Saturday’s game with South Carolina? A piece of advice to the young Tennessee coach: Complain privately, not publicly. You have two strikes. If the SEC office has to deliver a third reprimand it will not be pretty.
3. How many times will Dexter McCluster touch the ball against Auburn? It looks like Ole Miss has found the answer to its struggling offense: Get the ball to No. 22, Dexter McCluster. Against Arkansas McCluster had 22 rushes for 123 yards and caught seven passes for 137 yards. If you’re keeping score at home he touched the ball 29 times for 260 yards. I’m not real good at math but I can tell you that’s almost nine yards for every time he touched the ball. Look for a bunch of McCluster in Saturday’s game at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
4. What’s the over/under on Georgia Tech’s time of possession against Vanderbilt? Georgia Tech leads the nation in time of possession, averaging 34:50 per game. Vanderbilt, conversely, is 117th (out of 120) nationally with only 26:42 per game. “That puts more pressure on us to score,” Vanderbilt running back Warren Norman told The Tennessean newspaper. “We just have to score on every single drive to keep up with them, basically.” But that’s another problem for Vanderbilt, which is 110th nationally in scoring offense, averaging only 16.63 points per game.
5. Do you think Duke would like to have that game with Richmond back? The Blue Devils are 4-3 after wins over N.C. State (49-28) and Maryland (17-13). Duke has to find two wins in its final five games with Virginia (Saturday in Charlottesville), North Carolina, Georgia Tech, Miami, and Wake Forest in order to qualify for its first bowl game since 1994. The Blue Devils would need only one more win to become bowl-eligible had they taken care of business in the opener with Division I-AA Richmond (a 24-16 loss).

I believe that Florida will do all it can to allow Tebow to break the record against the Dawgs. As a loyal fan of the Dawgs I hope that when he does break the record that we act with class and admiration for Tim. I would love to see the Georgia fans stand and applaud for such an accomplishment. We should never stoop to the level of disrespect that the Gators tend to show. Go Dawgs!! Keep all of them out of the endzone and win with respect!!!

Duke actually needs 3 more wins. Their win over North Carolina Central was against a ‘provisional’ FCS team, and thus does not count. This has been clarified by both the NCAA and Duke sports information office on the ACC blog on the worldwide leader. That makes the loss to Richmond THAT much harder to swallow.

You can bet the house that the Urbane Crier will do everything he can to ensure that Tebow breaks Herschel’s record against Georgia.
Doesn’t matter….Herschel is still The Man ! Even with all of his eccentricities, Herschel is still the most celebrated player in SEC history.
Tebow has his place in college football history….Herschel has his.
If the Dawgs were to beat Florida Saturday, even “The Ol’ Ball Coach” would have to smile at the “deja vu all over again”….another Heisman Trophy winner’s unblemished season deviled.

The only reason Herschel did not get the additional year is his personal choice to bail out on his team for the NFL. Tim came back to help his team. Football is a team sport, not like track and field or martial arts, Herschel’s other sports. Tebow is the ultimate team guy and the record will be his because he showed that he is a team guy. 15 over 34 is not new math — it is merely the consequences of personal choices.

This whole Walker/Tebow debate is simply silly. Hands down, Walker was a better rusher than Tebow will ever hope to be. Tebow is a better quarterback than Walker could have dreamed to be. Tebow will most likely score more touchdowns than Walker. So what ….

Tony,
I bet you Kiffin will complain publicly one more time this year. Slive wants no part of suspending a coach at the expense of the referees. The SEC has taken too much heat about officiating already this year and the media/ESPN is eating it up. Kiffin knows he can press the issue regarding officiating. Heck, even if got suspended, can you imagine the media storm/publicity he would get from it?

Hershel was definitely a great player. Of that there is no doubt, and cannot be argued. However to say, “Herschel is still the most celebrated player in SEC history” is definitely debatable. Perhaps that is true for GA fans, but for the entire SEC I think there can be an argument.
Something else to note, how many extra games do teams play now then when Walker played? Those extra games do help pad the stats.
There was some debate a while back regarding going back and including post season stats for former players since they are now included for current players. Anyone know what became of that?

Tebow didn’t enter the draft last year because the NFL didn’t want him. Tim’s a great athlete — not a great quarterback. His prospects are better this year because the NFL is beginning to experiment with gimmick offenses. Gimmick offenses work pretty well if you have the right athletes.

genius, then why not count Tim’s TOUCHDOWN passes in the argument?
people, don’t be so dense. not only does tim get penalized in all of his rushing statistics when he gets sacked (and boy, this year it’s a LOT of yards), he has CARRIED THE BALL 400 fewer times than Herschel.
I don’t care if Jim Bob Cooter played 8 years, if he can break TIM’s record in half the carries that Tim has, he deserves some recognition.
Listen, UF fans know HW was one of the best players in all of college football. We saw what he did and respect him. Why can’t Mutts do the same for TT? There is no reason to make excuses about Tim’s record. And tony and all the rest of the geniuses out there always point out the disparity in years played, but i’ve noticed none are smart enough to talk about carries….which is more indicative of ones chances to score on a running play.

If Florida had a true running back. (That’s what T-Bone, I meant Tebow is in disguise.) He would not be nowhere near the record. He’s no different than that Gerhart kid out at Stanford. Just another smacker being a hoggish bull.
All records are meant to be broken, no matter what. Just ask the non-steroid users in baseball. If really funny how GA fans wants T-Bone to break the record. Typical southerners, ain’t nothing changed. Darren McFadden should have been the first sophomore to be get the Heisman. Then again, Tebow is your typical All-American white boy.

Tebow has had to put the Offense on his back all year. At least one of their TD’s will be his. Don’t know that he breaks it, but he’s gonna tie it. Also, I think there should be a factor that is used when calculating TD’s for quarterbacks. Something like: # of rushing TD’s X 1.01. I’m just saying…

…the reason you do not count Tim’s TD passes is because he cannot pass to himself! The record is for TD’s scored, not TD’s scored AND TD’s assisted. If I was really pithy I would say, in repsonse to your comment, that well, you have to count all the times someone else scored when the other team THOUGHT that Herschel was going to get the ball!

2.Let Kiffy complain about the refs. I think it is a good thing that people are questioning the almighty SEC…..maybe there wouldn’t be so many stupid calls if a spotlight was continuously shined up their collective backsides….
3.Ole Miss should have been giving the ball to McCluster the whole season…on every play.
4. Go Jackets – growing up watching triple option football – I’ve got to say I enjoy watching tech’s offense…..it’s amazing how we have almost come full circle in college football – people are running the single wing (spread) and now CPJ is bringing the triple option back….

Look I’m a diehard Gator fan- Tebow will break the record of 49. And most likely at his normal level of play he’ll break the 55 too. But for ALL sports there needs to be time period records, not talking about # of years played- but as in generational. Every time the sport changes, new records need to be set, with the previous one left for that generation.
Think about it, not only did Herschel’s record exist w/o bowl games, it also existed w/o SEC championship= that’s 6 ( most likely 7) more games Tebow has had a chance to play in- oh wait we also added in a 12th game- so make that 10 (most likely 11) more games= a FULL YEAR of games.
Herschel chose the money from the USFL (Really? Not the NFL?!!– mind you he did wise up)- so be it. Can’t hold that extra year of play against Tebow. But I say the same for MLB, NFL, etc records. All records will be broken sooner or later (with the exception of games started by Cal Ripken Jr and most likely Brett Farve)- just not fair to compare those newly set records that have the advantage of extra games played when not all games count (in the case of bowl records) or even when there isn’t the same number of games played.
But alas this is the fault with sports and their stats…

1. I’m pretty sure this “Tebow breaking Hershel’s record but not really” deal really only matters to Gator fans. Sure, it provides some more drama for the WLOCP, but no one else really cares. Most intelligent people know that trying to compare the two records is like comparing apples to oranges. By the way, can you imagine how many touchdowns Hershel would have run up on the likes of a Charleston Southern? Ouch.
2. If Lane Kiffin wants to keep his “street cred,” as he put it, from being mentioned in a Lil Wayne song, he’ll definitely speak up. Even if it means he’ll be punished. He has a way of saying how he feels without necessarily saying it explicitly.
3. I wish Georgia played more teams like Duke, Virginia, and Maryland. That’s almost like having a bye week.

Regarding Lane Kiffin’s claim about a penalty on Cody; for the last time, he and Gary Danielson from CBS were, are and will always be wrong.
The game clock was at 0:00 when Cody took his helmet off, GAME OVER. No penalty could be or should have been called. Not only did the Vols have the eight penalties, but they had about four other obvious holds, block in the backs, pass interference fouls that were not called that should have been, on some big/key plays that went their way. That’s the only reason they got close to being in a position to win.

4. Poor Vandy. They are going to get their spirit hurt in this game. Um yeh, if Georgia schedules Duke and Maryland or some bottom dweller in the ACC I’m not going to really get all excited about that. But I guess if your Tech you grasp at anything you can.
5. Pft who cares. Compared to the resources and facilites that Duke has vs. Richmond it’s not even close. Good for David to beat that Goliath every once in a while. Don’t take their win away from them. It’s probably the best win in that school’s history.

DawgGirl32, your statement about Tebow and Charleston Southern is pretty lame. I guess Walker’s games against Temple, TCU (which wasn’t the same as today), and Memphis State were real tough too. C’mon, we all play a few soft games some within our conference and some outside. For me, the record is comparing apples to oranges between Tebow and Walker. I find it more interesting the passion Dawg fans have about it being broken. All records come down one day and they don’t always have an asterick next to them when they do. Second it will gets tons of media exposure to pressure Slive to do something about the ref. UGA blog have said theat Slive was quoted as saying the SEC has procedures to reviews the refs but he did not go into how. Third if the SEC comes down on Lane, Lane may come down on the SEC in the media, the table maybe turned on Slive. On No. 2: The refs may have been warned not to get flag happy, but removing your helmet on the field of play has always been an automatic penalty. Unlike most celebration penalties, there’s no interpretation needed. It absolutely should have been called — the only excuse would be that they just didn’t see it. Not that it would have made any difference.

For the 753rd time–unsportsmanlike conduct (e.g. removing helmet) is a deadball foul. It would have been a 15-yard penalty against Bama after the result of the play. The result of the play was Bama possession. So, if the penalty would have been called, it would have been Bama ball at the 12 with no time on the clock. Because there was no time on the clock, the game was over.

Tony — No Vol fan here and certainly no Kiffen fan — he is obviously a tool. Having said that, your advise to complain privately is B.S. The referees make completely incompetent calls in public and have historically had little or no accountability as we see the same losers running around in this clown outfits every Saturday blowing still more calls. So, with all of the hard work that these kids and coaches put in, the least they can expect is some competence and accountability. The coaches and players face severe public scrutiny of fans and media with their performance potentially resulting in being fired or benched, whichever is applicable. It seems as though the only way to achieve such accountability with officiating is through public shaming of the officials and league office — both of which have seemed content with status quo under performance. So, spare us the lectures on how this issue should be communicated. If not for the public attention brought to these issues Slive and Redding would still be in Birmingham drooling on their ties and picking their noses.

1. Pulling for the dogs, ugh, but I hope Tebow breaks the record. Herschel used too many personalities to get there, and that’s just not fair.
2. Kiffin, this is the SEC and ESPN’s plan, STEP 1: Use officials to assure UF and AL win. STEP 2: STEP 3: Profit.
3. Profit
4. Vandy gets the ball twice in the 2nd half.
5. So you’re saying Coaching matters?
6. Foghorn Barnhart, I can’t wait for your weekly picks. It’s weird that Vegas bases their spreads on your picks. You ARE a fearless leader.

Walker vs Tebow discussion is dumb. Its apples to oranges. The real difference is that Walker was nearly 30 years ago and Tebow is here and now! In other words, Tim Tebow is going to walk out on that field Saturday to play and Walker will not — that’s the difference folks! And that’s one of the main reasons why the Gators reign supreme – again – over the lowly mutts. UGA is so pathetic we need to schedule you for homecoming. GATORS WIN BIG!!

Big Tone, I am looking forward to your pics tomorrow. I know there is NO chance you will pick our Dawgs. I don’t blame you, you have a rep to keep. Are you playing golf and drinking cold ones with your friends this year? We haven’t heard anything about it.
Anyways, I am afraid all of the SEC haters have found our kryptonite. All they have to say is our games are rigged in order to get the best teams to play each other for the SEC Championship. While I disagree with this notion it’s not good for business and Slive has to find a way to squash this talk. If there is a bad call in the UGA game this week the pressure will be on for sure.
As far as on the field issues are concerned, Tebow will get the record during the first 5 minutes of the game and that will be that, story over. However I think the touchdown will light a fire under my Dawgs and Sweet Willie will dial up a decent game plan. After 7 weeks of watching the most boring team in college football, we defeat the #1 team in the nation with a last second field-goal. AJ has 200 yards receiving and is the MVP. Book it!

Me and my whole family have been Gator fans ever since we left Ohio and New York and we know how good the Gators are and how good they can beat the bulldogs. In fact, the Gators are so good that they could win the Big 10 and all of my family’s other teams that we love up north where football was born. The Gators are the only team that are not rednecks in the whole SEC so….GO Gators! We say Orange…You Say Blue!! Then I say Orange…You say Blue!!!

1. Is this some kind of trick question? Of course Tebow will.
2. TxTech HC Mike Leach was fined $10,000 for criticizing Big 12 officials. So TxTech fans raised the $10,000 for him. Leach then took that $10,000 and bought hams for a non-profit agency in Lubbock,Tx.
So, Leach’s standard reply now is: “I dont criticize officials, I buy hams.” It would be a PR triumph for Kiffin over Mike Slive to do something similar.
3. Ole MIss vs AUB could be a lot closer than anyone thinks.
4. Josh Nesbitt:
“Thats…MY FOOTBALL…and you cant have it until my coach says so.”
5. Duke WILL go bowling.
While Duke HC David Cutcliffe was the Tennessee OC/QB Coach from
1990-98, Tennessee OWNED UGA.
Appy State was the reigning D-1AA champ when they beat Michigan, when M had a loaded, SENIOR STAR roster from the prior year to make a NC title run. Richmond is the D-1AA reigning champ from last year. No shame in Duke losing to Richmond. And, when UVA fires Al Groh at year’s end, Richmond HC Mike London will be the new UVA HC.
Duke is gonna easily beat: UVA & Wake. Has a very good shot to beat UNC.
Duke will lose to GT, but not without a fight. Miami will beat Duke.
Prediction: Duke BEATS GA in the Music City Bowl. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Tebow, will get the record, period. Be happy dawgs, you were living off of Walker for what now 30 years?? Its’ Tebow time. In regards to Kiffin, let him bitch. I love it. After living with Fulmer and his aw shucks attitude for the past couple of decades, it nice to have someone with some passion.
Its funny Spurrier bitches, he is a genius, Kiffin does it and he’s a tool?? Kiffin is scary smart, it all about intimidation. I am sure most of you can remember how Bryant would hang out in the endzone before the beginning of a game just to mess with the refs minds. Kiffin is just a little more vocal.
But once again, here we are in Atlanta, and the AJC is talking about Kiffin, and this is exactly what he wanted. Enough said.

CrazyVol,
Spurrier had “street cred” built on his record of achievement. And I don’t remember SOS being blatantly, absolutely wrong (due to ignorance of the rules) when he went off on one of his hissy fits. Plus, he has never publicly called the integrity of the conference into question.
The late Johnny Cochran couldn’t defend Kiffin’s comments and behavior.

For the love of God, let the endzone storming GO. The Gators are just mad b/c they didn’t think of it first. The point is, and every SEC team in the country will agree I’m sure, the most CLASSLESS team is Florida. They play dirty, their coach is a whiny a**, and they continually do things to prove what a bunch of holes they all are. I don’t care if UF wins the nat’l championship for the next ten years in a row, I will always be thankful that I am NOT a Gator.

Kiffin is just a pompous a**. Nothing more, nothing less. All he does is whine and complain… kind of reminds me of Urban Meyer. There is a time to pitch a fit, and there is a time to keep your mouth shut. Kiffin needs to learn the difference.

Tebow gave up in making a TD saving tackle last week and let the man return it over 100 yards and get back in the game. Where;s your guts and pride Tebow?
