Will Tebow break Herschel’s TD record in JAX?

Five burning questions as we head into the weekend:

1. Will Tim Tebow break Herschel Walker’s touchdown record against Georgia?  Walker, the 1982 Heisman Trophy winner, scored 49 rushing touchdowns in his three seasons at Georgia. Tebow, the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner, has 48 rushing touchdowns in about 3 ½ seasons at Florida. You have to figure that Tebow will break Walker’s record in Saturday’s game in Jacksonville. That’s a tremendous accomplishment for a quarterback, but it is worth noting that Walker scored five touchdowns in three Sugar Bowl appearances (1980-82). Those touchdowns are not included in Walker’s records because only recently did the NCAA start counting post-season statistics in career totals.

2. What will Lane Kiffin do if he gets a bad call against South Carolina? The Tennessee coach was reprimanded for the second time this year by the SEC after complaining about the officiating in the Alabama-Tennessee game. He complained that his team was called for eight penalties while Alabama was only flagged once, which is correct. He complained that Alabama should have been flagged for a penalty when Terrence Cody ripped off his helmet after blocking a Volunteer field goal. That’s debatable. After what happened in the Georgia-LSU game, there is no way that call was going to be made. He complained that Tennessee should have gotten one more chance at the field goal to win the game. On that one he was wrong. The rule is clear. Even if a penalty had been called, Alabama would have retained possession.

But what happens if Kiffin gets a bad call in Saturday’s game with South Carolina? A piece of advice to the young Tennessee coach: Complain privately, not publicly. You have two strikes. If the SEC office has to deliver a third reprimand it will not be pretty.

3. How many times will Dexter McCluster touch the ball against Auburn? It looks like Ole Miss has found the answer to its struggling offense: Get the ball to No. 22, Dexter McCluster. Against Arkansas McCluster had 22 rushes for 123 yards and caught seven passes for 137 yards. If you’re keeping score at home he touched the ball 29 times for 260 yards. I’m not real good at math but I can tell you that’s almost nine yards for every time he touched the ball. Look for a bunch of McCluster in Saturday’s game at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

4. What’s the over/under on Georgia Tech’s time of possession against Vanderbilt? Georgia Tech leads the nation in time of possession, averaging 34:50 per game. Vanderbilt, conversely, is 117th (out of 120) nationally with only 26:42 per game. “That puts more pressure on us to score,” Vanderbilt running back Warren Norman told The Tennessean newspaper. “We just have to score on every single drive to keep up with them, basically.” But that’s another problem for Vanderbilt, which is 110th nationally in scoring offense, averaging only 16.63 points per game.

5. Do you think Duke would like to have that game with Richmond back? The Blue Devils are 4-3 after wins over N.C. State (49-28) and Maryland (17-13). Duke has to find two wins in its final five games with Virginia (Saturday in Charlottesville), North Carolina, Georgia Tech, Miami, and Wake Forest in order to qualify for its first bowl game since 1994. The Blue Devils would need only one more win to become bowl-eligible had they taken care of business in the opener with Division I-AA Richmond (a 24-16 loss).

Of course Tebow will get his TD.

Richmond isn’t a bunch of chumps. They are 7-0, and they were FCS champs last year.

Yeah Tebow has the record for most 1 yard rushing touchdowns in a career. It is a joke to compare Walkers accomplishments in 33 games forget the years as college football has not only counted bowl games for Tebow, but also added an extra game for him to accumulate the record. This is a farce and cannot be debated. Walker is the BEST player ever not only the SEC, but the NCAA. PERIOD.

Extra game being each year Tebow has played the NCAA has played 12 regular season games, plus SEC Championship and then a bowl game. Yeah compare the two…….

I believe that UGA will do all it can to keep Tim Tebow from breaking Hershels SEC record against the Dawgs Saturday. As a loyal fan of the Gators I hope that when he does break the record that we act with class and admiration for Herschel’s 29 year record. I would love to see the Georgia fans stand and applaud for Tim’s accomplishment. We should never stoop to the level of disrespect that the dawgs tend to show. Go Gators!! Keep all of them Dawgs out of the endzone and win with respect!!!

While I won’t boo if he scores a touchdown, I also won’t stand up and applaud any opponent scoring anything against the Bulldogs. Plus, he would have to score 6 touchdowns to beat Herschel’s. If it’s fair to count Tebow’s bowl touchdowns. Why not count Herschel’s bowl touchdown’s.

lowcountry you should change you name to low class you obviousley have no appreciation for a great player and your assessment of Tebow’s accomplishments are infantile. He’s a QB not a running back and if you look at the great backs in SEC history you must ask this question how come no other SEC back has broken Walker’s record. I had the pleasure of watching both Walker and Tebow and Walker is the best back I’ve ever seen, but Tebow is the best football player I’ve ever seen so take your lowcountry bull#### down the road one thig’s for certain on Sat Tebow will break the record and the mighty Gators will break the puppies

Herschel left college a year early for the USFL, signing a “personal services” contract with Donald Trump. He was the first underclassman to join pro football. Who knows what the TD total would have been if he stayed in college, as Tebow has done. And between him, Jim Kelly, and Doug Flutie, they were the USFL. In 1984 he was the number 1 pick in the NFL. He had 16 rushing TD’s in his first year in the USFL, running against much tougher defenses than in college. You are comparing apples and oranges here. Even Tech fans like myself take our hat off to #34.

Herschal Walker did get his in 3 years and Tebow in 4 years but Fla. team has not realy played very many good teams this year. Our high School team could most likely beat Fla. Tebow may be a good player but NFL didn’t want him. NFL did want Herschel Walker.

Wow. What is the point of even having a comment section? All it is is a venue for Florida fans to show how incredibly stupid they are. Seriously, I’m seeing some of the dumbest commentary I’ve ever seen in my life. Just do away with it. You ever read a youtube comment section, Tony? Yeah, that’s what this looks like. Except the posters are wearing jorts. Every time I see crap like this I am reminded just how many idiots live in this world and that we will likely end up paying for their food stamps.

There has to be some way to combat this cancer. Perhaps if we stopped selling Florida merchandise in Wal-Marts we could discourage these swine from banding together under a common vulgar flag. Or maybe we could put a ban on the use of internet from trailer parks in North Florida so that those that spend half their income on cigarettes and alcohol are not able to pollute the rest of America with their simpleton ideology. I’m not sure what the answer is, Tony. But I do know that something must be done. Because anyone who read through any of that rambling above is now dumber for it.

You hear that, U of FL? Your existence is contributing to the downward spiral of humanity.

Herschel Walker is as relevant to today’s SEC recruiting prospects as Doak Walker was in 1980. UGA, please join the rest of us in the 21st Century when you figure out enough offense to get yourselves here.

two different players, playing two different positions, in another space and time. both players better than most during their own era. opposing players know they get the ball and still can’t/couldn’t stop them.

Ugh, obviously you are low class and probably at Hardee’s this morning making Sausage biscuits and are unavailable to respond to this. While your at it, add egg and cheese to mine.

Tebow is an excellent collegiate football player. My point in this is that it is easy to look simply at TD’s but if you look at games played and Tebow’s ADVANTAGE with his offensive scheme ( Remember, Herschel Left, Herschel Right and if the don’t work Herschel up the middle) it should be easier for him to break the record. Again call it what you want but I would love to know how many of Tebows TD’s are QB sneaks. The number is staggering.

Football is a team sport. It is all well and good to award trophies to individual players for accomplishing record-setting performances, but it should be remembered that they didn’t set any records on their own.

Even an individual Olympic athlete owes something to their coaches when they break a record. Walker and Tebow might have both gone unnoticed had they not played on successful football teams. That said, they both did play with great teams and, although the circumstances under which they played are obviously significantly different, both of them deserve credit for their accomplishments. But neither of them are bigger than the teams on which they played.

You kids these days don’t seem to grasp the team concept very well.

Have another drink Dawg fans….here’s to Tim Tebow. The greatest player to ever play in the SEC, including Herschel Walker, a great running back that had one great year and brought you one championship and then left you early just like Knowshon. Georgia has underachieved ever since he left.
Georgia: The Wisconsin of the SEC.

Don’t care if Saint Tim does it or not. You can’t compare the two records. HW was and is the best in the modern era.

October 30th, 2009
8:16 am

Herschel did it in 3 years. Herschel did it in far fewer games when you also consider Tebow gets 12 game seasons and SECC games, both of which did not exist when Herschel was playing. Finally, they count Tebow’s stats from bowl games, but DON’T count stats (5 more TD’s for Herschel) from HErschel’s bowl games? That makes NO sense at all. This is the dumbest comparison I have ever heard. There are so many *’s on this one, it is silly. Tebow is not breaking any Herschel TD record. No chance. Ever.

Chef montuer…its more about the fact he SCORED them..they are in all the history books on what planet should they not count? No one is saying we shouldn’t count EVERY 1 yard or 50+ yard TD Tebow scores so how could it be fair to exclude TD’s Mr.Walker scored…just TRY and explain that PEASE as I have no clue.

October 30th, 2009
9:13 am

Tim Tebow has played (by my calculations) 13 more games than Herchel, with another 7 yet to go. That is 20 more or a season and a half. And add the fact that 5 of Herschel’s TDs in the Sugar Bowl are not included in his total makes this record for Tebow a non issue. The very least should be for the NCAA to retro the 5 TDs to Herschel’s and when Tebow gets 7 more, then annoint him.

But, this is just one humble BAMA fan’s opinionl

tim you mullet headed loser…your jorts must be too tight today..we ended the season higher that the slimey reptiles in 07 after sending St.Meyer and company into shock with a beatdown they later blamed on a endzone dance when the game was 7-0 they GAVE UP…I look for a lot of dancing this year..I hope CMR understands that if we can shock the Gators into giving up with a little dance number Dance on you Hairy Dogs Dance on…I hope we beat you guys by a 100.
