Will Tebow break Herschel’s TD record in JAX?

Five burning questions as we head into the weekend:

1. Will Tim Tebow break Herschel Walker’s touchdown record against Georgia?  Walker, the 1982 Heisman Trophy winner, scored 49 rushing touchdowns in his three seasons at Georgia. Tebow, the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner, has 48 rushing touchdowns in about 3 ½ seasons at Florida. You have to figure that Tebow will break Walker’s record in Saturday’s game in Jacksonville. That’s a tremendous accomplishment for a quarterback, but it is worth noting that Walker scored five touchdowns in three Sugar Bowl appearances (1980-82). Those touchdowns are not included in Walker’s records because only recently did the NCAA start counting post-season statistics in career totals.

2. What will Lane Kiffin do if he gets a bad call against South Carolina? The Tennessee coach was reprimanded for the second time this year by the SEC after complaining about the officiating in the Alabama-Tennessee game. He complained that his team was called for eight penalties while Alabama was only flagged once, which is correct. He complained that Alabama should have been flagged for a penalty when Terrence Cody ripped off his helmet after blocking a Volunteer field goal. That’s debatable. After what happened in the Georgia-LSU game, there is no way that call was going to be made. He complained that Tennessee should have gotten one more chance at the field goal to win the game. On that one he was wrong. The rule is clear. Even if a penalty had been called, Alabama would have retained possession.

But what happens if Kiffin gets a bad call in Saturday’s game with South Carolina? A piece of advice to the young Tennessee coach: Complain privately, not publicly. You have two strikes. If the SEC office has to deliver a third reprimand it will not be pretty.

3. How many times will Dexter McCluster touch the ball against Auburn? It looks like Ole Miss has found the answer to its struggling offense: Get the ball to No. 22, Dexter McCluster. Against Arkansas McCluster had 22 rushes for 123 yards and caught seven passes for 137 yards. If you’re keeping score at home he touched the ball 29 times for 260 yards. I’m not real good at math but I can tell you that’s almost nine yards for every time he touched the ball. Look for a bunch of McCluster in Saturday’s game at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

4. What’s the over/under on Georgia Tech’s time of possession against Vanderbilt? Georgia Tech leads the nation in time of possession, averaging 34:50 per game. Vanderbilt, conversely, is 117th (out of 120) nationally with only 26:42 per game. “That puts more pressure on us to score,” Vanderbilt running back Warren Norman told The Tennessean newspaper. “We just have to score on every single drive to keep up with them, basically.” But that’s another problem for Vanderbilt, which is 110th nationally in scoring offense, averaging only 16.63 points per game.

5. Do you think Duke would like to have that game with Richmond back? The Blue Devils are 4-3 after wins over N.C. State (49-28) and Maryland (17-13). Duke has to find two wins in its final five games with Virginia (Saturday in Charlottesville), North Carolina, Georgia Tech, Miami, and Wake Forest in order to qualify for its first bowl game since 1994. The Blue Devils would need only one more win to become bowl-eligible had they taken care of business in the opener with Division I-AA Richmond (a 24-16 loss).

Tebow will have a Zaxby’s commercial after this season, no doubt. So yes, that’s what’s important.

I can deal with the rushing TD being broken against us, but if Tebow completes that gay ass jump pass on us for a TD I might just destroy my TV set.

Jack,

When/if Tebow breaks the SEC TD record AND makes a Zaxby’s commercial, I will recognize his greatness.

Don’t want to hear that Herschel did it in 3. If he’d stuck around instead of chasing $$$, he could’ve set a higher record that might be safe.

Also, Tebow is a QUARTERBACK – who has had almost 400 fewer carries than Herschel did. He’s gonna break your record, and you’re going to get to watch!

I believe that Florida will do all it can to allow Tebow to break the record against the Dawgs. As a loyal fan of the Dawgs I hope that when he does break the record that we act with class and admiration for Tim. I would love to see the Georgia fans stand and applaud for such an accomplishment. We should never stoop to the level of disrespect that the Gators tend to show. Go Dawgs!! Keep all of them out of the endzone and win with respect!!!

Dude, you are watching the same season as everyone else right? Who hasnt question the integrity of the conference this year. How many times have you seen the SEC god state he is sorry for the ref’s this year. You did notice they got put on probation right? And please Kiffin knows the rules, its all a game. Bring the focus down on the ref’s.

And don’t even play, if Bama was getting crappy calls you guys would be the first to start bitch’n and rightfully so. As far as Spurrier he hasnt done anything at all since the Gators, and how long ago was that? But yet he can make a smart butt comment tonight and everybody will be like ohhh and ahhhh. And you know what I don’t care, he is bring attention to South Carolina, and that is part of his job.

As a Gator fan, I hope Tebow breaks the record because that means we finally scored in the Red Zone! That said, I don’t think there is any reason to take shots at either player. Both guys are/were special talents that ALL fans should appreciate. I am not ashamed to say I think Herschel was an amazing player – maybe the best CFB ever – just unreal when you watch him on film. Let’s hope the game on Saturday is talked about because of the play on the field, not becasue of penalties, end zone celebrations, or unecessary timeouts.

Does anyone know how many times Tebow has scored inside the 15 yd. line ?? Probably a lot more than Herschel had a chance at. Imagine how many Herschel could have scored if he had the cast of players around him like Tim. Also being a quarterback is an advantage because he has more options. If Herschel got it he was going to be running it. Tebow’s freshman year, he scored in the red zone many times. Jus sayin’

CrazyVol,

Again, Spurrier is a winner (overall record), and Kiffin is a loser (overall record) which has a lot to do with it. Plus, Spurrier, to my knowledge, has never been objectively wrong in his public statements.

Yes, any fan would complain if his team was being slighted. Are you saying the refs cheated UT out of the Bama game or are you referring to other games?

I’m heading to lunch and will read your reply upon my return.

UPSET ALERT: UNC will upset VT tonight.

1. I just dont see Butch Davis going 0-4 in ACC play.
2. VT has to rush to win, but UNC has a VERY STOUT run Defense.
3. In 2008, UNC was thumping VT until UNC QB went down in 4th Qtr.

4. MOST IMPORTANTLY:
VT has stupidly wasted an ENORMOUS amount of time, energy,
& focus for 2 straight weeks on the GT “blocking” issues.

VT got VERY luck against GT & UNC last year. That luck has run out.

VT is still “reeling” from the loss to GT, and VT does not appear ready for this game tonight.

So, UNC:29 VT:26 (UNC with a late FG for the win)

And, since ESPN ACC Analyst Heather Dinish is a COMPLETE VT HOMER,
there will be a post-game video highlight of her in an
Exorcist head-spinning moment.

The idea that Tebow somehow sacrificed to play his senior season at UF is laughable. He stayed because the NFL doesn’t want him. If he knew he’d be the first pick, or even a top-5 pick he would have been gone. If he could stay for a 5th year he would, because the NFL still doesn’t want him. He is at best a 3rd rounder and his stay in the league will be short and unremarkable. I guarantee that no NFL team is going to trade away the franchise for Tebow like the Vikings did for Mr. Walker.

He’s a great, great college football player no doubt. So was Vince Young. The only difference is that Vince has a lot more money because he was taken so high. Timmy won’t have that luxury.

And another thing, I don’t think that Tebow would have left UF for the money out of personal greed. Most guys who leave have a lot of people that they need to think about and to take care of and Tebow would do a lot of good with his money if he made it and would have taken it for that purpose if it were there. I saw what Wuerffel did with his money in New Orleans and that is truly a commendable thing. I think Tebow would do the same if not more, but I don’t think that a big signing bonus is in his future.

If Tebow does break the record Saturday, he should have an asterick next to his name because rushing from the quarterback position is totally different from the tailback position.

Shellgator when Georgia stormed the field the score was only 7-0. Judging by your sideline reaction the Oscar Meyer family got pretty excited and was acting like they were gonna really come out and show the dawgs up. Did not happen! On your side the game was already decided and the girly timeouts were called to embarrass which was never our intention or goal. As for Hershel’s number of carries, everyone new he was getting the ball, Tebows carries are always short yardage or surprise type plays. The two players can not be compared.

Tim will break the record but the Dawgs will win if Cox throws no picks, the d gets at least 6 sacks and Murphy and Harvin don’t suit up. Tall task indeed.

Ole Miss will destroy auburn, who is reeling big time.

Kiffin needs a blanket and a nap, just like yellow fuzz.

Vandy is bad but improving. The game will be close for a half and then get out of hand. 35-14

Cutcliffe can coach. Duke will get to go bowling because the ACC blows.

It is true that Hershel did it in 3 years….but someone answer me this…how many touchdowns did he throw for? The answer would be none because he wasn’t a quarterback. A quarterback is breaking his record, now that is even more embarrassing than his Zaxby’s commercial.

Lindsey really face it moron Tebow is the best passing fullback in the history of the game…and the very fact you could think anything Hershel did on the football field could be embarrassing proves you are a homer of the 1st water…how can even make that statement when Tebow breaks the record and he will my hat is off to him as a QB,running back whatever..and when that record gets broken and it will even if a punter breaks I and any college football fan won’t feel that Tebow should be embarrased…its a hell of record as the fact its stood for over 20 years should show…

Seeing that Timmy will be needing money soon, maybe he should try to beat Herschel’s arse in a MMA fight. Tim’s 26 years younger, so he could take him right? Be sure to place your bet on Tim with me. It’d be shorter than a Mike Tyson fight circa 1987.

Well then the answer is NO Tebow will not break Walkers record Saturday unless he scores 6 touchdowns.

That’s got to be the dumbest remark I’ve ever heard. You can count Tebow’s rushing touchdowns in the SEC championship (which didn’t exist when Hershel played) and you can count Tebows touchdowns in the bowl games….but you can’t count Hershels?????

Since Hershel had 5 TD’s in thos three bowls games, that puts him at 54. Tebow has 49. He’ll probably break the REAL record but not against Georgia.

I’ll be sad when Tebow breaks Hershal’s record for no other reason than the continuation of the over hype of Tebow the media has engaged in. Make no mistake, Tebow is a great college football player and deserves much credit.

The one thing that disappointed me in Kiffin’s remarks about the refs is that it took away from a great game played and coached by Tennessee. Big Orange Country does not count moral victories, but a majority of us are proud of the way the attitude, effort, and discipline(off-field and on) has improved this season from the previous regime. For all that point out what is wrong with Kiffin, he has rallied the fanbase and the team into believing they can play with anybody. We had lost that under Coach Fulmer. Now, the coaching staff has to show they can consistently coach with the big boys of the SEC. Nobody doubts their ability to recruit with the best of the nation. It is a fun time to be a Vol fan, because the hope is back and our coach does not back down. It is not as if the rest of the SEC had any love for the Vols before.
