Florida is vulnerable. But can Georgia do anything about it?

Florida is still No. 1 but the reality is that the Gators are bringing a very vulnerable football team to Jacksonville on Saturday to play Georgia.

The offense, which was unstoppable a year ago, is simply not playing well. There is no question that the Gators miss offensive coordinator Dan Mullen, now the head coach at Mississippi State. But more than that Florida misses the ability to stretch the field vertically as they did a year ago with Percy Harvin and Louis Murphy. Nobody is scared that these guys are going to go deep anymore.

Tim Tebow is starting to press a little and is trying to do too much. He was sacked six times against Arkansas, a game in which Florida turned it over four times. Tebow threw two pick-sixes against Mississippi State, which meant the Gators had to work way too hard to win 29-19 in Starkville (You may insert your officiating reference here).

The defense is beat up and tired because it’s been on the field too much. Linebacker Brandon Spikes (groin) and several other defensive starters who sat out last week, however, may be back.

Urban Meyer is taking the temperature of his team to make sure that guys don’t start pointing fingers. If I’m a Florida defensive player, I’m wondering why my offense is suddenly missing in action and is starting to give away points.

The bottom line is that Florida has all kind of issues. They have a perfect 7-0 record but are playing less than perfectly. They look like a football team that is trying to tread water until Dec. 5 and the SEC championship game, when they expect to turn it up a notch. That’s a dangerous place to be, mentally and physically, in this league.

But for the life of me I’m just not sure that Georgia can do anything to take advantage of it.

Sure, Georgia has had a week off since beating Vanderbilt. But what is Georgia actually going to do on the field that would give them a chance to win this football game?

Georgia has gone down to Jacksonville many times with the lesser talented football team. But all through the history of this rivalry the Bulldogs have found a way to win because players stepped it up and, in some cases, played the best game of their lives.

In 1966 Florida and quarterback Steve Spurrier were favored to win their first-ever SEC championship. Spurrier was on his way to winning the Heisman Trophy. But a pair of defensive All-Americans, Bill Stanfill and George Patton, got after Spurrier in the second half and Georgia won, 27-10.

In 1975 Florida was supposed to finally win the SEC championship with one of their more talented teams ever. But Erk Russell’s first “Junkyard Dawg” defense would not let the Gators score a touchdown. They kept it close so that tight end Richard Appleby could throw an 80-yard touchdown pass to Gene Washington and stun the Gators 10-7.

In 1985 Georgia upset No. 1 Florida in Jacksonville because Tim Worley and Keith Henderson just ran the ball right through the Gators and defensive end Greg “Muddy” Waters had a career day rushing Florida quarterback Kerwin Bell and Georgia won 24-3.

In 1997 Mike Bobo played one of his best games as a Georgia quarterback. Robert Edwards and Hines Ward were magnificent. Jim Donnan called his best game as Georgia’s head coach and the Bulldogs dominated the No. 6 Gators 37-17.

In 2007 Knowshon Moreno ran for 188 yards, a career high, and Matt Stafford threw three touchdown passes. Florida was vulnerable that day because Tebow had a bad shoulder. Georgia rolled up 413 yards and beat No. 9 Florida 42-30.

But as you look at this Georgia team, you wonder: Who can step up and do something exceptional?  Can somebody on this team have a career-defining moment and at least put Georgia in a position to win?

I think QB Joe Cox is that kind of guy. I know A.J. Green is. Linebacker Rennie Curran is a warrior. But look at the numbers and tell me how Georgia wins this game:

103rd in rushing (108 yards per game)

84th in scoring defense (27.7 ppg)

 119th in turnover margin (minus-11)

117th in penalties (9.29 per game)

90th in passing defense (238.29 ypg)

70th in total defense (365.57 ypg)

95th in time of possession (28:28)

The response to that question should be that the numbers don’t matter. It only matters how these two teams play for 60 minutes in Jacksonville. In the past some flawed Georgia teams have found a way to put it together and have a magical afternoon against Florida. But what about this team?

I’m not here to beat up on a Georgia team that has clearly had its struggles since a 3-1 start. All I know is that I was down on the field for the last five minutes of the Tennessee-Alabama game last Saturday and I saw two football teams playing their guts out to win a huge rivalry game. I saw some great players make some great plays with the game on the line.

At Bryant-Denny Stadium I saw the kind of effort Georgia is going to have to give to have any kind of shot in Jacksonville. I just wonder: Does this Georgia team have that kind of effort in them?

Since there still seems to be confusion about this, here’s the difference between what UGA did in ’07 and UF did in ’08. In ’07, Mark Richt told his players that he would punish them if they did not get an excessive celebration penalty after the first touchdown. UGA had played with zero emotion prior to that day in Jax. He said later he intended only the players on the field to get the penalty. I think any person would argue that it was reasonable for a coach to assume that your players would understand that and to assume the whole team would not run on the field. After it happened, Richt apologized to both Meyer and the conference for what happened. Now, we can assume Richt is lying or we can assume he is telling the truth. If he is lying, it’s probably the first time since he’s been at UGA that he told a darn fib.
What Meyer did was far more sinister. He waited until the end of the game and then called timeouts himself. He PURPOSELY set out to embarrass the other team and their coach(es). The year before, the Gators had the entire game to respond to the perceived slight. In ’08, the head coach acted at the end of the game with the obvious intent of sending a message.
We need to be honest about what happened. If Meyer wanted to respond to what UGA did, his team did it in spades last year. There was no need to rub Georgia’s noses in it. As Urban’s wife was heard yelling after the game last year, “What goes around, comes around!” All I can say is, I sincerely hope you are right, Mrs. Meyer.

If ugag would quit crying and start playing…they could win this game. floriduh is mainly hype this year. But ugag is whipped before they take the field because they are a bunch of crybabies.

It is a shame that Tech is not playing this game because Tech could make the state of Georgia proud by smacking this overrated floriduh team.

Tech is playing their second sec team this week after already defeating missy st worse than floriduh did. Of course the sec is so weak this year that it is no wonder that Tech has scheduled 3 sec games as their patsy games this year.

The sec is the weakest I have ever seen it in my lifetime. If we had a 16 team playoff, the sec would be exposed big time.

Thank God and Greyhound that chan gomer gailey is gone forever. You dawgs are really going to miss him.

Tony, you’re right about the offensive struggles, but the defense is anything, but vulnerable. They are as healthy as they have been all year and were already the best defense in the country (with the 3rd qt against Arkansas being the exception). I am not sure if Florida will score 20 points, but it won’t matter because I don’t see UGA scoring 14.

By the way, if Florida is so bad, why can’t anyone beat them?

Who would have thought in the preseason that the Dawgs, if they lose on Saturday, would be 4-4 at this point? I for one thought UGa would go 10-2.

I just don’t see them beating the Gators.

There is no doubt that CMR needs to make wholesale changes on his staff in the offseason. If he doesn’t then 2010 very well could be his last season.

No matter what anyone says it comes down to dollars. At big time schools such as Georgia football carries nearly all of the other sports programs. If you start losing interest drops which has a major effect on the bottom line. Schools such as UGa with large athletic budgets can not and will not allow that to happen.

Yes UGA can & will win this game. Run the ball enough to keep the UF front seven on defense in a run state of mind. Use the passing game for the big plays. Play calling will need to be real patient with the running game. It is no sin to punt the ball. That has always been one of UGA’s problems, no patience with the offense.

Why Does Florida deem it necessary to schedule 3 games with Troy, Charleston Southern and then FIU? When Ohio State does that, they slip up and lose to one of the big boys or in the title game because it softens up their players and does exact opposite of what a team needs to be doing week in and week out, hit and fight hard on every play. Not a UGA fan but cannot applaud a team with these 3 opponents on their schedule and call them the number 1 team in the nation. If UGA cannot beat them, SC in Columbia just might.

Belue- we have discussed this topic ad nauseum on blog after blog after blog….

Both coaches were wrong and the moves were childish and immature.

Let’s get past it.

Regarding the game, anything can happen, I suppose, but unless something magical occurs (as Tony alluded to above) I just don’t see how we even come close.

The Gators have looked beatable, to be certain, but they haven’t been beaten. Undefeated and #1 in the country…..miles away from where we are right now.

It may be closer than the pundits think simply because of Florida’s offensive woes, but I don’t see how we score more than 10 points unless they help us out quite a bit.

Regardless…I will be there as always!

October 28th, 2009

Bottom line is that the Dawgs can’t run the ball this year effectively enough, and Florida’s defense can stop it. That puts the ball in Joe Cox’s hands, and although AJ Green can make some plays, he can’t carry the entire load. On the flip side, Georgia’s defensive secondary is suspect, as is the pass rush. Trying to be optimistic about it, but Tebow will likely pick us apart unless something drastic happens Saturday. Note to Willie Martinez: manage to pull out a miracle effort from the defense this weekend (enough to win) and you MIGHT save your job. Still, I think an optimistic prediction for the Dawgs is to keep the game within 10 points. It’s just one of those seasons…

Truth is not many teams have beaten since Spurrier arrived so I don’t feel too bad about our losses against them. I realize no one is giving my Dawgs a shot in this game, I mean why would you when we have Willie Martinez roaming the sidelines with his “soft” cover-2 ideology? UGA does not scare anyone in this league which is embarrassing given our talent pool.

Although UGA does not have much of a chance, this is BIG, BIG game for CMR and staff I believe. If we implode like many are predicting than I doubt many assistants will survive the off-season. The UF and Tech game are their final chances I think. I have heard St Simmons and Fernandina are like ghost towns this week, which are usually packed with UGA fans. However this base has given up on the assistants and their ability to prepare for a big game. In this pissy economy, who wants to go to Jax or anywhere for that matter to see UGA get blown-out? This is why Damon Evans will force CMR to make the changes needed. The question is will Damon be a cheap SOB and not give Kirby Smart the money he wants. Get it done Damon, we are watching!

Let’s see, seven games each game an INT from Cox with a total of 9 and several fumbles thrown in there. Yep, Cox is just the guy to show that he can pick apart the FL D. As CMR always tells us it’s not the QB but the blocking even though he hardly ever has pressure on him.

As usual Martinez will devote the game plan to stopping the run. He will forget that the other team has a QB that knows how to complete a pass when he is not pressured. The big play as usual kills us.

After we score on our first possession Fabris orders a directional kick and it goes out of bounds killing all momentum. Remember our kickoff is to young and doesn’t know how to play yet or the wind will be blowing.

Gray will get into the game and run a zone read play. Smith will get in the game and the ball will go to him. I am sure Strong is shaking in his boots planning for our varied attack.

Yes, I have a glimmer of hope UGA can win the game provided all of the stuff above doesn’t happen but so far we are 7-7 pretty much in all of the above. I will be cheering hard unless the new little one decides to come during the game Sat.

The sad think except for the QB position I think we have better players this year on the O side of the ball.

If we want to talk about the past (i.e., previous to the last 16 or 19 that you’ve beaten by UF) then let’s do it. I’ll put Ohio State’s record and championships up against anyone – particularly against Georgia – and come out feeling pretty good.

Keep your eye on the ball – it is about this week and this game. And you guys are getting to get stomped. I base that solely on the product on the field, Georgia won’t more the ball against that defense – and you know it, or at least you should.

Tony, you’re right and you’re winning me back as a reader. Florida isn’t that good but Ga would have to play way above their heads, which it has been known to do in this game. You have always shown class and probably have the best understanding of the SEC of any writer. Thanks for acknowledging the effort of the Vols against Bama. You have to admit, they are starting to play tough football. You have to love Monte, and you probably hate Lane, but we can live with that. The Vols are back, and so is this reader.

UF is only vulnerable when they turn the ball over putting, the defense in poor position or giving up touchdowns. If UF has less than 2 turnovers this game will not be close. If they continue to give the ball away anything is possible. I don’t think it will happen this week, UF is focused for a “rivalry” game. Gators 35 – Dogs 10.

Hope springs eternal! But realistically I probably have a better chance of flapping my ears and flying to the game. What good does it do to “step up” when your coaches can’t call the right plays or put you in the right scheme? Or neither your OC or DC can think quickly enough during the game to make effective adjustments? The sad part here is that even if we do somehow win, a lot of Bulldawg fans will point to it as evidence of things being just fine and dandy with the program. It’s a lose-lose situation. THINGS ARE NOT WELL IN ATHENS! If we lose it’s another step towards a subpar season. If we win Willie’s chances of hanging around another year increases as does the opportunity for more subpar seasons in the future. The only positive that might come from a win or a loss is that a loss may seal CWM’s departure. But according to reports yesterday Willie’s back next season no matter what.

I’ll be pulling for my Dawgs like crazy on Saturday but I think it’ll be like taking a knife to a gunfight for us! I hope I’m wrong. I really do. But this game to me stacks up as Florida looking to break out its doldrums versus a very erratic and underperforming Georgia team. Which coaching staff would you bet on to correct their team’s problems? For me, even though I love my Dawgs, it ain’t Georgia!

Justin Houston will be in Tebow’s face all day long and that is why we’ll keep it close. Florida’s left tackle is horrible and he will get expsed on Saturday. Now, the only way we get the “W” is if we can run the ball…should be an interesting game. GO DAWGS!!!

I have lost complete confidence in Mark Richt and his whole coaching staff. He has demonstrated that he is a weak leader. It just goes to show: just like Erk Russell carried Vince Dooley and his conservative offense over the years, Van Gorder carried Richt’s team in its early success.

If Urban Meyer himself wrote an article about this game it would probably sound a lot like Tony’s: Florida’s #1 but had some problems, but I can’t “for the life of me” figure out how UGA is gonna beat ‘em. How is that homerism?
I think you’re right on Tony. But, if everything comes together (Boykin takes another kickoff to the house or close to it; Tebow turns it over a couple times; AJ has a lights out game; Dawgs muster some semblance of a running game), Dawgs have a shot. But that’s a lot of “if’s”…..

If you are dumb enough to think that Tebow getting a rushing TD this week against us is going to be a life crushing blow to us, keep on thinking it. You should take the time to read the comparison of Tebow and Herschel on Bradley’s blog and you will see why nothing Tebow does Sat or ever can make us stop crowing about #34. I will be very optimistic about beating the gators until I see WM and his vaunted cover two defense. We made Crompton look like Peyton Manning and we will make Tebow look like Steve Young. The key to this game, just like 2007, is getting to Tebow. Mallet lit us up until we started hitting him. If I were the DC, I would rush 7 and play man to man on Cooper and Fernandez. If they beat us man to man, so what. They beat us last year in cover two.

Tony,

Here’s an observation on the Florida Gators,

The past couple of weeks, UF has has little problems moving the ball down the field. When Florida got in the red-zone, all of a sudden Tebow turned into a drop back- passing QB. Let’s face it, Florida can score at will by rushing the ball inside the 10.

I believe Coach Meyer is great at math and knows his team is far physically better than anyone they’ve played. Meyer and Tebow have executed their plan perfectly….and Tim Tebow will break Herschel Walker’s record against the Bulldogs.

There is absolutely nothing that indicates the Dawgs can win this game. I base this on our play for the entire 7 games thus far. Three of our four wins could easily have been defeats leaving us at 1-6 today. We struggled against a very weak Pac-10 team, (lost to a mediocre Big 12) held on for dear life to a mediocre SC and Arkansas. We can’t stop them but we can contain them. If we don’t give up the turnovers and kill ourselves with *#&@^ penalties.

If CMR and actually prepared the Dawgs for this game (which would be a first in 3 years except recent Vandy game) Georgia can keep it close. This provided the offense and defense play solid no mistake football the entire game we can win it. There is hope, little chance but much HOPE. Keep it close until the end and we do in fact win this game. But if we give up the turnovers and big plays early, we’ll roll over before half time and this game will be done.

Have them ready Richt!

Tony, while reviewing these stats for UGA I have to point the finger at the PENALTIES…Many of these have allowed opposing offenses to remain on the field which = more yardage, more points for the opposition, and less points and wins for UGA. Coach Richt is like an extension of Coach Bowden @ FSU. Imagine the result with just 2 or 3 penalties per game…..
I know this sounds a bit nutty, but TCU has looked like a serious contender all season. I believe they could beat Texas, and play the SEC champ to the last play…

Look, Martinez will be in Athens next year regardless of the outcome of this game. He will not be the DC instead he will be moved to a different capacity to keep his salary and job. Fine with me. I didn’t think the defense was suppose to be a problem this year with the middle of the line back and the LB’s playing tough. The ends we knew might be shaky at best but looks like a couple of the kids are getting the hang of it. Great talent there we can’t waste it another year.

David Granger

The Dawgs certainly CAN win, but that’s a far cry from saying they WILL.
Our defense remains extremely vulnerable to: (1.) the opposing QB catching us blitzing, and hitting his safety-valve receiver for a key first down (or worse), and (2.) the “hesitation draw play” just running right through our soft (and sometimes nonexistent) middle defense at the most critical times. And Tebow is about as good at both of those as any QB in the conference. And I frankly haven’t seen any sign that Georgia’s defense is adapting to stop it.
The Florida offense runs a LOT better when Tebow doesn’t carry the ball so much. I think (to some small degree) both Urban Meyer and Tebow are trying to “pad” his stats a little, to help in the Heisman race. But they’re a much better team when Tim doesn’t carry the ball a whole lot except in key third and short situations.
Right now I’d just settle for ONE game without UGA allowing a long kickoff return.

Question for Dawg fans: If you could only beat one, would it be GT or UF?

Advantages of beating UF: National recognition for beating #1, revenge for timeouts, beating a team that has dominated you recently, jump-start to season with 5 games to go (although remember you lose to GT as part of the deal).

Advantages to beating GT: Shut M, Saint Simons, and others up. Good way to end season (especially with a bowl win). 8 out of 9!

Well, which is it?

Alright, enough! This “revenge” talk needs to stop. “Revenge” is such a lousy form of motivation anyway. I mean if you can’t get up to play your rival in a nationally televised game with National Title implications for at least one team, then you shouldn’t be playing division I football.

The only people that really care about this “revenge” factor are the media and the fans. I can almost gurantee you that the players don’t care. And even if they did, it’s only going to give them a little bit of juice for like a quarter. After that, it comes down to fundamentals and game plans. The team that is better prepared wins. Period! Fans on both sides can whine about endzone dances and timeouts, but the bottom line is that UGA won in 2007 because they were better prepared and outplayed Florida, and vice virsa for the Gators in 2008. As a Bulldog fan: the endzone dance was fun, and Florida got their “revenge” the next year. So let’s just get excited about another SEC battle, and leave the BS out of it this year.

I have been a Georgia fan all of my life, and this is the first time I have been totally embarrassed by the fan base. Do any of you think the players and coaches aren’t aware of the negativity that is being spewed by so-called Dawg fans? Also, what about the recruits and their families? Show some class and support your team, win or lose! Fans can assist in building confidence in both players and coaching staffs, so let’s get behind them and show our support.

Just know that no matter how you feel about the coaches and their ability (or lack thereof) to coach this team, the players need to know we are behind them! Also, Mark Richt has been loyal to Georgia, so we need to show him our continued support and allow him the opportunity to “right this ship!” It may not happen this year, however, after the season is in the history books, there will be some changes made for the better. He will get it right eventually, and, in the interim, all of the Dawgnation should support this team and our coaches. Shame on most of you for giving up and saying we have absolutely no chance to win this game Saturday. With that attitude, it’s no wonder the players find it difficult to play in this hostile environment – their own fans have turned on them!

I will be at the game and will be cheering as loudly as I can for this team. I DO believe we can win, no matter what everyone else says. Keep the faith, believe in miracles, and you may be surprised at the outcome on Saturday. I do believe, I do believe, I do believe…! GO DAWGS!!!!!

There is always a chance for a UGA win. That is why they play the games. Granted, UGA will have to have one hell of a good game or UF will have to have one hell of a bad game, maybe both, for UGA to win, but it ain’t impossible.

Dawgs are big underdogs, but we’ve been there before. Georgia has a long history of upsetting heavily favored Florida teams, even in the post-Dooley era. We were supposed to have no chance in ‘75, or ‘85, or ‘97. 2007 is the latest example. When you look at what Ron Zook-led Florida teams did to us in ‘02 and ‘03, it’s easy to see that being the favorite means little in this game. It’s time to party like its 1985.

Besides, Florida’s one of the least impressive undefeated, No. 1 ranked teams I’ve seen in a long time, and there’s no way that Georgia is that bad. They have to get hot on both sides of the ball sometime this season, might as well happen on Sat. after two weeks to prepare.

If UGA establishes a run game, the Heave and Catch offensive scheme has multiple opportunities. Everyone knows CUM’s playbook but can’t or haven’t been able to do anything to stop it. UF’s secret weapon is they began utilizing another RB besides Tebow last week. What was it, 90 yds on 12 carries..? Tony, the compelling question in this game is NOT whether Georgie can rise up and win against a vulnerable team in a rivalry game. You answered your OWN question with the historical examples.

No, … the compelling question in this game is how in the WORLD can the awesome dawgs, a Top 10 program in the imagination of their fans, be a double-digit underdog? After all, they’ve got a roster FULL of Top 10 talent, if you believe what dawg fans tell me about their players. Could it be …. underachievement? Nah,….

As Ronald Reagan once said, “facts are stubborn things”. The compelling part about this game is that EVEN GEORGIA FANS admit that a win against UF would be a great upset. And I find that interesting given the esteem with which they so often view their “reloading” program.

Looks a WHOLE LOT MORE like “rebuilding” to me.

I just hope CMR has enough sense to keep “stability” in the program by retaining Coaches BooBoo & Martini!!!

Ultimately, the Georgia Florida game has boiled down to one thing.
Heart, Guts, Toughness, whatever you want to call it.

The team with the most “heart” has won the game. When dooley was coaching, those intangibles were on the georgia sidelines. In fact, when Erk left, so did a lot of the “heart.”

The evil genius turned the tables on those intangibles. So much so that it carried through the Zook years until Urban could re-stoke the fires.

At UGA, we have a bunch of Tin Men coaching our football players. (no heart.) No heart equals a lack of effort against lesser opponents and giving up when you should be fighting for victory. No heart = belief that a system is greater than motivation…and the list goes on and on…

So, in terms of who will have the most highly disciplined, motivated squad for this game – without a doubt, it will be the boys in Orange and Blue. Forget their past performace…this is Florida/Georgia. This is not MSU and Arkansas….where Florida can clock in and win. (although lately it seems as if the same applies to uga…) Florida has its sights set on bigger things and we are just one obstical in the way.

However, we need to remember that every year, when Georgia is on the ropes, Richt seems to pull an improbable victory from his backside…in 06 it was the win against Auburn…in 07 it was in Jacksonville… Each of these victories is used as proof that the “system” is valid and doesn’t need changing. However, in 08…well, in ‘08, the magic had seemingly run out….

Which brings me to my conclusion, and the bigger issue here. Let’s say that for some crazy reason the planets align and Georgia pulls what will be probably the biggest upset in the history of the series on Saturday. And, lets say that this motivates our players to run the table…or at least win three of the next four.

We all know what the story line will be. “The system works, all coaches and coordinators retain their jobs.”

I want to win just as bad as anyone….but I have to wonder if a victory on Saturday will just provde another excuse for perpetuating the heartless mediocracy that has become georgia football.

It’s a tough time to be a Georgia Bulldog.

“Take advantage? We got a bunch of cry babies more worried about when Myer takes time outs than the fact the score is 49 – 10! Your butt is kicked all over Jville and you’re crying about the timeouts?”

Right on, 78 Dawg. My thoughts exactly. We should be more concerned about the 39-point beating than the timing of Meyer’s timeouts. We should be more concerned that, down only 14-3 and having thrown an interception deep into Florida territory, the entire offense stood around in a daze and let Florida’s defensive back run nearly untouched down the sideline to the UGA 1. We should be worried that on the subsequent play, Percy Harvin went untouched into the end zone on a routine option pitch. We should be worried that from thereon, Florida outscored us 28-7.

In other words, we should be concerned that this Georgia team GAVE UP. Quit. Waved the white flag. Sort of like the Tennessee game this year. Or the ‘07 Tennessee game. Or in a handful of other games in the past 4 years.

I have faith that an inspired, tough Georgia team will emerge to take on Florida this week in Jax. I’m counting on a rested and well-prepared Georgia being embarrassed enough about the RESULT of last year’s game to take it to a tired, ragged Florida team that seems ripe for an upset. I even predicted a 27-17 Georgia victory because this year feels a lot like ‘85, ‘97 and ‘07 to me. But even if I’m wrong, I think a lot of Georgia fans would like to see Georgia play with HEART, DESIRE and COURAGE this year.

If the best this team can muster is offense about a couple of late timeouts, then it is truly a troubled program at this point.

I have worried more about miss state, lsu, and ark than UGA for some reason. I just have a feeling that this could be the week that the UF offense and greenhorn offensive coordinator addazzio acutally wake up. if that happens, look out as It could get out of hand quick. If UF turns the ball over and the Oline plays poor and predictable bad tebow draw plays, then it could be interesting. I’ll give UGA the most credit I can based on what ive seen so far, and give Floirda the least credit the same way and I still come out with UF 31…UGA 10…..

Vulnerable? Not sure about that, but UF hasn’t played a complete game yet for 4 quarters. The stats say UGA leads the SEC in two categories: Net punting and Sacks Allowed. Not the categories you want to lead. Whereas UF leads in 8 of the 17 categories including #1 in Pass Defense and #2 in Rush Defense. In the SEC:

UF is #1 in Rush Offense while UGA is #5 in Rush Defense
UF is #7 in Pass Offense while UGA is #11 in Pass Defense
UGA is #12 in Rush Offense while UF is #2 in Rush Defense
UGA is #3 in Pass Offense while UF is #1 in Pass Defense

The numbers look more skewed when looking across the entire FBS. I will say that each game is its own. This a heated rivalry that goes back way before the celebration in the end zone and the timeouts of last year. The teams will be told that over and over.

ARdawg,
Im not saying that the Gators had this in mind during summer work outs. Im dont even classify this as a conspiracy. There’s just a little tension between Coach Meyer and Coach Richt.
As Tebow got closer to Walker’s record, why not save the cue de gra for UGA?

Florida hates UGA for that trash they did 2 years ago. They wont forget. Thats why Meyer called 3 time outs in the 4th quarter last year, when they were up by 30!!!
Take a close look at the play calling in the Miss St game when Florida was inside the 20. It’s not crazy at all to assume that Meyer wanted Tebow to break the record this week.

UGA sucks this year, no doubt, but Tech ain’t world beaters. There’s a reason they’re not in the top 5 right now.

And they are NOT waiting around for Dec 5th, THIS is the game they are pointing to. They STILL have that unsportsman act of 2 years ago firmly in their minds. Timeouts at the end of last years game compared to the whole Georgia team dancing in their face was merely the appetizer. Expect a break out game by a determined Tebow…

In 07 Owens and N.Washington had big games and we got good pressure off the edge.We missed that in 08 but this year I look for our DL to control the LOS and make this a very tight game..When we get good play from our front 4…our scheme has been pretty sound against Meyer and this year the Gators offense is not as good as it has been the last three seasons. Our return game is explosive and our punter top notch..so I feel good about us having an advantage in field position. The key to the game will be how our OL plays..we have to be able to run the ball…Fla has excellent corners..Cox will not get away with to many poorly thrown balls trying to force it to AJ.Establishing a running game is a must. The intangibles are on our side..3 of our senior starters are Fla kids with a shot to go out 2-2 against Fla,we had a bye week,we need this game more than they do and I have a feeling that if there are ANY game changing flags thrown in this game it will be on the Gators(I think our stay in the official’s doghouse is over).and then there’s just the aspect of Tebow breaking Hershel’s record against the DAWGS.As beleaguered as our Defense has been it would be fitting to not only win this game but keep Tebow out of the endzone as well.Hit Tebow in the mouth.. early..often and all game.My strategy is simple…all out assault on Tebow! The only blowout is coming fro our side if it happens!

The only chance you have now that Spikes, Marsh and Trattou are back in the lineup is if the Gators turn the ball over and you get points off of it or force a short field. You may want to think again about punting against the Gators as well. If they block one, which they do about every other game, they don’t lose. Don’t believe me check out the stats.

Football is a simple game – you kick the ball, you run the ball, you pass the ball, you catch the ball, you block, you tackle – or in the case of the dawgs you false start, hold, fumble, celebrate, delay the game, illegally substitute, clip, and whine. Then you stomp on the other team’s logo and pee off the crosswalk.

Florida is going down to somebody this year (and I don’t mean in the SEC Championship or MNC games either, although they could lose either of those as well). “Mark Richt has been loyal to Georgia, so we need to show him our continued support and allow him the opportunity to right this ship!”

You make a good point, pvbeachdawgfan….however: We need to see some sort of sign that he’s TRYING. And one indication of that would be that we do NOT continue to do the same things over and over again that end up costing us games. Stupid penalties, very questionable play-calling, poor kickoff coverage SCHEMES (not just execution), getting KILLED on our blitzes, lining up in illegal formations at critical moments…we keep doing the same things over and over again. Sometimes we have overcome the mistakes to win, and sometimes we haven’t.
Coach Richt’s plan for righting the ship seems to be “let’s drill another hole in the bottom, so all this water can run out.”

Coach Richt does two things very well. He’s an oustanding recruiter, and he represents the university very well. And those are about the only two positives he has. He’s the worst game coach I’ve ever seen, and it’s hard to see the Dawgs appear so unprepared.

No matter what the outcome, a true Bulldog would rather die and ‘give up’…and if you won’t ever ‘give up’ then they can’t beat us. As for who’s gonna out-score the other one Saturday, if we protect Joe Cox anything is possible. We’ve got the receiving talent and if we open things up then we’ll see just how effective our running game can be. As for the defense, I know we’ve made some mediocre QBs look like world beaters, but Florida ain’t beatin’ people throwing the ball – so stop Saint Timothy’s and the Gators’ running game -and again, anything is possible.

Sorry big guy but your theory doesn’t wash. Richt and Meyer neither one harbor ill feelings for the other. Seems you’ve been drinking too much Kool-aid and buying into the hype. Meyer made a statement with the time-outs thing last year and accomplished his goal and that of his Alums. The previous years dance wasn’t planned but obviously embarrassed Meyer and some Gators. I have all the respect in the work for Tebow, but I think the Dawgs can win this game for three reasons. 1) The bye week. The team with the bye weeks has a huge advantage in this game, and the strength of Florida is their defense which should be very very tired. 2) Myers offense is not that great without superior talent, and frankly Florida does not have superior offensive talent this year. 3) the dawgs have talent, and maybe with a week off it will actually show!

Old School Gator,

Regarding the Tebow v. Herschel debate, teams play 2-4 more games per year than they did the old days. With that in mind, none of the old school records will stand for long.

I feel all records should be converted into per game averages with at least a 10-game minimum.

WHy should they? Herschel was the best RB EVER! I will give you that, but he left on his own accord after 3 years. It is a rushing td record, whether it took 3 or 4 years is the player’s choice. No one forced Hersch to go play for the NJ Generals.

UF Time of possession YTD: 29:18
UGA Time of possession YTD: 30:21

I certainly wouldn’t call nearly half the game as tiring for the defense. Now, 3rd down efficiency is more of an indicator. UF is #1 in the NCAA for 3rd down conversion while UGA is #24.

But comparing his TD record to Walker’s is just crazy talk. Not only did Walker do it in a shorter amount of time, but Walker was responsible for nearly 90% of moving the ball up and down the field. Tebow is getting the glory after his temmates carried the ball down the field. Nowhere near the same thing.

Not to sounds like a conspiracy theorist, but FL. should have lost to Ark. if not for the bad call, & even against Miss. St. there was a bad call, that may or may not have costed them the game…even if it didn’t it could have been even closer. On the other hand, UGA had the bad call against LSU, which may or may not have cost them that game. I’m not saying that UGA will win, & I agree that FL should be favored. I just thin UGAs definitely a more talented team than some of these other teams that FL has struggled against, & UGA has also played a tougher schedule. I just think UGA has the pontential to bear FL. Again, not saying it will happen, but just that there’s a chance. It seems like any time people say that a team doesn’t have a chance…that team so often pulls it off. It really seems to happen a lot w/ UGA. I just know from experience that anything can happen. This yr. reminds me of 2 yrs. ago….when Tebow is carrying the team, & running the ball a lot. FL. had more success last yr. When he was able to get more players involved in the offense. The last time we won was when he carried the team like this, & he also isn’t putting up near the numbers that he put up that season as well. Who knows, UGA may get blown out, but I’m just saying. Fl hasn’t blown too many teams out…so I’m not so sure I’ll buy into the theory that it’ll be a blowout like in yrs. past. I just think if UGA plays a good game, & they’ll most likely have to limit the turnovers, & as long as they’re not intimited by FL., which seems to be the case in the past sometimes…then they can win.

What are you doing on this site badgering Georgia?
Ya’ll are 0-9 against SEC teams in bowl appearances.
Ya’ll are 0-2 against Georgia in bowl appearances.
In the last ten years, Georgia has defeated ya’ll twice,
Wisconsin twice (with Ron Dayne), Michigan State and
Purdue twice.
Perhaps Georgia should switch from the SEC to the Big TEn.
We would then become the mighty powerhouse ya’ll think

Using your logic for the past ten years rating Georgia vs. Florida,
let’s do another equation.
For the past ten years, Florida has only won four of ten bowl appearances.
Using the same logic, this and next year should be losses for Florida in

I can’t stand UGA, but the media is making me hate UF even more. For the first time in my life, at least since I started at Tech in ‘88, I will be pulling for the Dawgs. This year, they have not shown that they are a #1 team, yet the media’s love affair with St. Tim blinds them from voting for anyone else. There aren’t a lot of #1 alternatives, but TCU, at this point, has earned it more than anyone else this year.

Bama crushes UF this year? Crushes? Heck maybe they win but their offense is weak especially against their defense so I don’t think there will be any crushing going on. On to the excuse makers, a record is a record and these guys are just mad. It is ironic how Tebow might pass Walker against the “mighty” UGA defense who is ranked last in the SEC in points allowed per game.If this wasn’t something special there would be a lot more quarterbacks near that record. Vince Vance, he was arrested during the season, end O’ story. He is another criminal on the team. He should be suspended for at least one game no matter who or where they are playing. It won’t matter though, the Offense won’t do much against the Gator D, some field goals that’s about it.

I’m on the west coast so I just finished lunch while reading all the comments made, some funny, some not. I too have been in attendane or watching them on TV for 50 years. I saw the 27-10 win
over the Gators with the Evil Genius at the controls. I saw the 75 game, the 80 game all in person.
But that was then and this is now. Smell the coffee DAWG fans, we’re a bad team and Tony’s Georgia stats, shown in his article, prove it.

If I were a betting man, I say Meyer’s pregame talk to his team goes like this: “Guys, we’ve not been playing Gator football the last three games. We’ve struggled in all three. We should have wo going away. Against Georgia, we have an opportunity to make corrections, then go on to win the East, win the SEC championship and get another national title. You know what to do, now do it! Now let’s get ‘em!!!!!”

Please folks, I’m a DAWG lover but I am also a realist. What happened this or last year or any year is history. Stay in the present. Accept the fact, like it or not, we are a poorly coached team and will get bat up by one that plays hard nosed, SEC football. We’re closer to Clemson than we are to Gainesville in our style of play.

For the life of me I can’t see us having the offense necessary to win AND keep our defense off the field.

WE DO NOT HAVE A RUNNING GAME AND WITHOUT ONE WINNING IS NEXT TO IMPOSSIBLE. THERE IS ONE THING ABOUT GAMES PAST IN THE RICHT ERA, ON TOTAL, IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE OFFENSE. LAST YEAR’S DEBACLE CAME AS A RESULT OF STAFFORD’S PICS. HE WORE OUR DEFENSE OUT BECAUSE WE COULDN’ SUSTAIN DRIVES BECAUSE OF MISTAKES..

True enough. We are all vulnerable. Bama and UF especially. Both have been getting worse and worse each week offensively. Its more and more telling how much UF misses Mullen, Percy Harvin, and Louis Murphy. That was a lot of speed on the edge that they lost and its definitely impacted them.

Same with Bama. McElroy started off smoking hot and for some inexplicable reason has gotten ultra conservative, not sure of himself, and it shows. Bama has almost become completely one dimensional and if something isn’t done offensively by both Bama and UF then both remain vulnerable to the upset.

We get a much needed bye week. Just got through playing 8 straight games and 5 straight sec games with the last 3 against really good defenses in Ole Miss, Carolina, and UT. Hopefully in our case McElroy will get it together and get back to some semblance of his early season form against LSU.

It all depends on which teams show up. If Florida’s normal defense (which will have 3 starters back on Saturday that didn’t play last week) shows up, Georgia will have difficulty scoring points. If Florida’s normal offense shows up, they will give Georgia 14 or 20 points. Again, Georgia can’t win this game on its own. They will win if the Florida offense gives them the game. It will not happen on Saturday. Final score: Florida 27, Georgia 14 (with 7 of those points given to Georgia on a turnover). Off course, their will be one call that goes against Georgia and that will obviously cost them the game…and the officials will “give” the Gators yet another victory over the Dawgs.

The Sad Halloween

It is my ninth all hallows eve.
And what was about to happen I could not believe
My dad said he couldn’t take me trick or treating at all.
He said he would be to busy watching football.
For this year Halloween comes on the Georgia-Florida game.
Dad said he would be sad cause the Dawgs always come up lame.
For the Dawgs have only won two of the last 15.
Oh boy this is going to be a sad Halloween.
Unless the Dawgs can find some room to run
This Halloween is going to be no fun.
If only they can get the ball to A.J . Green
Maybe they can make those Gators scream.
If the defense can stop Tebow the Great, Hernandez and Cooper
This Halloween won’t be in the pooper.

Sugar Hill…the Gators almost scored 42 points in the first quarter against Kentucky. Florida has the offensive players to score a bunch of points. They are just having problems blocking for the passing game. Meyer and the coaches have changed up the O-line for this weekend, with one of the best freshman OT in the country (Xavier Nixon) starting at left tackle, with Johnson moving in to left guard. Nixon can handle the speed rushers. Johnson couldn’t. He is an awesome guard, but a so-so OT. I think you will be impressed with Nixon this weekend. The right side with Pouncey and Gilbert are just fine. If this fixes the pass rush blocking issues on the left side, it could be a long day for the Dawgs. If not, it will be a close game and I hope the Gator offense will not cause them to lose. I know the defense won’t.

Redneck Hypocrisy: Would you care to tell Mark Richt’s two adopted special needs children that their daddy is a hypocrite? You, my poor child, are beneath contempt. I suggest you get down on your knees and pray that you ever become the human being Mark Richt is. And I’ll do the same.

The dawgs win a close one with in 3 points. By my Mathmatics, Florida has struggle to win against MUCH lesser oponets FOR A REASON…they don’t have the Personel they did last year. If georgia can win the turnover margin by 3 they win a close one…..they can do it

Vince Vance gets arrested and obviously has someone else, most likely an alumni, pay his bond yet he still can play on Saturday? I’m sure he broke team rules but they send the wrong message to reward him by not suspending him for the upcoming game or games. Anything to win then Coach huh? I could care less if he plays or not but this does not show the rest of the team that breaking rules will get them in trouble. Anyway the Gator D is so good it will not matter who is playing offense on Saturday.

Hey Tony where was your in-depth analysis on Georgia Tech/Va. Tech, a game that really meant something. All week leading up to the game, not a word, just one paragraph in your prediction column. You bill yourself as Mr. College Football but all you are is a UGA/SEC homer.

The Dawgs and the Yellow Jackets have to date met 95 times on the football field, with the Bulldogs leading the 107-year-old series, 53-36-5. In 2002, Georgia hosted Georgia Tech and boasted its largest margin of victory in the series, 44 points. During the rivalry, Georgia has compiled a winning record in 8 of the 11 decades, including the past four decades.

Look for Gray in the zone option, but passing this time. Also, look for Charles on the TE Post route. It should be there after throwing long to Green and King a few times. Charles and White are the keys. The UF safties play deeper than anyone so to not give up the big play. If Charles and White get going, Green will follow with a huge game.

To What Ever- What I’m saying…is that Ark had appeared to stop FL., but their were 2 missed calls that gave FL. the call first & goal, which pretty much gave FL. the TD. Considering that Ark. only lost by 3 points, then…yeah, it sure looks to me like it cost them the game. The refs even admited they missed the call, & that’s why they suspended the refs. They didn’t do it for nothing you know! I’m not trying to take away anything from FL., but I just hate how people go so much by record, ranking, media bias, & mystique. I’ve been around long enough to know upsets can happen. I’m just saying that for all of UGAs struggles…most of their games have been pretty close, except Tenn…for sure, & maybe OK St. On the other hand, FL. may be undefeated, but they’ve also had some close games that could have gone either way. I don’t know which team you like, but I just state facts, & it sounds to me like you’re giving a biased opinion. Again, I’m not saying UGA will win…just that I thin they have a chance, bc upsets do happen. Maybe you should try getting real?!

Oh, & to these people that are talking jun about Vance not getting suspended. Ok. St. didn’t suspend Dez Bryant when he got in trouble, but of course when he got in trouble later in the yr…he hasn’t played for a while. That just means that UGA had to play OK. St. on the road w/ all of their weapons…unlike any other team. Just get over it people. If you haters really believe UGAs so terrible, then it shouldn’t matter if Vance plays, right? Richt normally does suspend his players when they get in trouble, but for goodness sakes…it was only a traffic violation! It’s not like the guy killed somebody. UGA actually hasn’t gotten in much trouble this yr., & when they have…the recent incidents have been traffic violations. I guarantee you people that there are other teams out there that let violations go more than UGA.

1964, I believe, UGA is hosting #1 Bama and the Bear tween the hedges, NOBODY, I MEAN, NOBODY is giving the wounded DOGS a prayer, I saw it with my own two eyes, With just seconds left on the clock, The DOGS executed the flea flicker to perfection on as I recall about an 80 yard TD, with time expiring. DOGS WIN 18 to 17. In college football history tends to repeat itself from time to time…………GO DOGS!!!!!!!!!!

Realistically, UGA has no chance to even keep the score close.

Even in a fantasy dream, Georgia has little chance to win.

It’s all about coaching, and UGA doesn’t have it there.

“In the past some flawed Georgia teams have found a way to put it together and have a magical afternoon against Florida.”

Tony, what you are referencing is from exactly TWO seasons since Vince Dooley retired 1997 and 2007. T-W-O. 2. Two of 21 games. 2004 was a year when UGA was clearly a better team. So there are only two games where UGA was not truly favored and actually found a way to win. That is simply pitiful. With this in mind, Georgia simply does not have the players nor the organization to win this game. There simply is no way. The line is down to 14 and 14 1/2….lay the points.

P.S. Georgia will upset Georgia Tech this season to save themselves from a losing record. The Tech D is probably the only D left on Georgia’s schedule that is highly vulnerable. I would say Auburn as well, but by then Auburn will have lost several games an d be very mad…and very much due to beat UGA again. Ben Tate will run wild on the UGA D (so will Tech, but Auburn’s D is better than Tech’s).

To the Tech moron/fan, Tech does NOT have more SEC titles than Georgia. You are typical of 90% of the Techie so-called football fans. You know little to nothing about college football, but you are sure to show up for a game once Tech has a decent coach. You people are pitiful and ignorant. There is nothing worse than chiming in to an argument with no facts. You may as well be a 4-year old. Enjoy CPJ since he will be gone after four or five seasons to a bigger and better job where the fans know some football history and actually sell out their stadium occasitionally (not just when their rival plays there and buys up all the tickets!)
