It was a great weekend for Georgia Tech. Now what?
So what did we learn over the weekend?
1. It was a great weekend for Georgia Tech. Now what? Bobby Dodd himself could not have drawn up a better football weekend for the Institute. Tech’s win over Virginia coupled with Miami’s loss to Clemson puts the Yellow Jackets’ in the driver’s seat in the ACC Coastal Division. Beat Wake Forest at home on Nov. 7 and Duke on Nov. 14 in Durham, and the Yellow Jackets will advance to the ACC championship game in Tampa on Dec. 5. Now is where the Georgia Tech team has to decide: Do they want to be good or do they want to be special? Sandwiching those two conference games are a pair of SEC opponents, Vanderbilt and Georgia. In the past Georgia Tech would be on the verge of being special and slip up. Georgia Tech is good enough to win these last four games if it can remain focused. Will they?
2. You’ve got to start giving C.J. Spiller some love for the Heisman. Nobody is playing better right now than the junior running back/return specialist for Clemson. In the Miami game alone he had a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, a 56-yard pass reception for a touchdown, and a total of 310 all-purpose yards. In each of Clemson’s seven games Spiller has had at least one play of 60 yards or more. He has returned four kicks (three kickoffs, one punt) for touchdowns this season. And here’s the best one: In his Clemson career Spiller has had 19 career touchdowns of 50 yards or more. That’s more that Rocket Ismail, Reggie Bush, or Tim Brown. Bush and Brown won the Heisman.
3. Some SEC coaches obviously didn’t get the memo: SEC Commissioner Mike Slive reminded everybody last week that public criticism of officials is a no-no. He reprimanded Bobby Petrino last week when the Arkansas coach went off on the officials after a loss to Florida. The SEC later admitted that one of Petrino’s complaints was correct. But being right doesn’t allow you to jump the officials in public. There may be more memos going out today. Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin went right up to the line after the Alabama game when he wondered aloud how his team, which was among the least-penalized in the country, could get eight penalties while Alabama was flagged for only one. Mississippi State’s Dan Mullen was less subtle. He called out the replay official for not overturning a controversial touchdown in his game with Florida. “I hope he’s severely punished if he ever works another SEC game again, because I think it’s completely unacceptable,” he said. I finally saw the play last night. The score should have been taken off the board and because the Florida player fumbled before the goal line when he was trying to hot dog it as he went into the end zone. Still, it doesn’t matter if the call was wrong or not. The coaches know they can’t publicly criticize officials and if they keep doing it, the Commish is going to bring the hammer down strong on somebody.
4. Iowa is this season’s 2002 Ohio State: In 2002 Ohio State won one ugly game after another and finally got to the BCS championship game, where the Buckeyes were supposed to get blown out by a great Miami team. It didn’t happen and Ohio State won the national championship. The Hawkeyes had to score on the last play of the game to beat Michigan State Saturday night, one of many great escapes that this team has had. But here is what we now know. The Hawkeyes (8-0) jumped over Boise State and Cincinnati in the BCS standings and are now sitting at No. 4. If Texas, Alabama, or Florida stumble down the stretch it has become clear that the Hawkeyes will jump a once-beaten among those three and get into the big game. Iowa is No. 8 in the human polls but No. 1 in the computer polls.
5. Florida is getting painful to watch: It’s a good thing Florida started the season at No. 1 because the Gators are really getting painful to watch on offense. Quarterback Tim Tebow, who is now starting to get frustrated and forcing things (two pick sixes against Mississippi State), is simply not playing as well since his concussion against Kentucky. I don’t know that the two are related, but the numbers don’t lie. My buddy Pat Dooley of the Gainesville Sun points out that in Florida’s last 15 trips to the red zone, the Gators have scored only two touchdowns. But when you’re No. 1, you don’t have to impress anybody. My experience is the pollsters will vote you out of No. 2 (as the AP did Alabama this weekend), but they won’t vote you out of No. 1 as long as you keep winning. Do the Gators have a breakout game coming this Saturday against Georgia? We will watch and report.

Tech does need to stay focused and I think they will. They are too well coached. I just wish our schedule was a little tougher so we could advance a little in the BCS rankings. No worries though. If we finish as ACC champs and win the Orange Bowl it will be the best season since winning the national title in ‘90 and give us a platform for more things to come. BEAT VANDY!

The celebration calls are a joke when 1 team can do things that get called and others do much worse and get nothing. Blowing a call after a review that shows CONCLUSIVE evidence that the original call was wrong is inexcusable and should not be tolerated. I don’t blame Mullen one bit- good for him. I know you don’t believe in conspiracy theories but what else could it be? UF has been getting away with murder practically and the SEC does nothing but look the other way. The FIX is in. Dog fan here but not a Tech hater. I think Tech will win out, at least til the Orange Bowl. They are a better team than last year, and PJ is one of the better coaches in the country. If Tech can keep him, he will lead Tech to a national title sooner than later. They are on the rise. Meanwhile our program is in decline. After Richt’s early success he assumed his “system” would work no matter who he plugged in as coordinators. He promoted from within and therefore didn’t get the benefit of fresh ideas and schemes. Face it, we are not keeping up with the Jones’ (UF, Bama, LSU, ). I hope he has the courage to make changes, cause we’re on the verge of falling behind UT, Ole Miss, and others.

1. I really thought GT would get caught still celebrating the win over VT and get upset by Virginia. Hats off to the Jackets. Great follow-up victory. Glad I was wrong and I hope they continue the rest of the way.

4. Iowa is reminscent of the 2002 Ohio State team; however, I don’t remember this many undefeated teams ahead of Ohio State at this point of the season in 2002. Iowa will go to the Rose Bowl, but it won’t be for the National Championship.
5. Why is Florida still ranked number one? This season may go down as the best example of why we need an 8-team playoff.

I know Fla. and ‘Bama won this weekend, but there is no way you can convince me that the SEC is as dominant as people make it out to be. Tennessee and Miss. St. are not that strong of teams this year and they gave the 1 and 2 teams in the country all they could handle. Miss. St. got whacked by GT at home, and UT lost to UCLA at home. I would love to see TCU play a big dog this year, because they could have a legitment shot at winning.

Tech has four games left…two with the ACC against Duke and Wake Forest and two with the sec against vannnerbilt and ugag. The ACC games will be much tougher than the creampuff sec games.
The sec is the weakest I have ever seen the conference in my lifetime and even though the ignorant poll voters keep propping the sec up…it is painful to watch how weak the sec shows itself to be on the field week after weak (sic).
And that so-called high school offense that Tech runs is a thing of beauty. It is going to be sad what it is going to do the clarke county correctionaly institute in the last game in November.

Here’s hoping that Tech can win out, clean Clemson’s clock in the ACC-CG and show well at a BCS game. In fact, we need all the ACC teams to show up at the bowls this year. That’s the only way that a 1-loss ACC team will get more respect in the future. The way the ACC has played out of conference as a whole (yes, there have been bright spots) lets the media keep its bias against the conference.
ACC teams play tougher schedules than other disrespected conferences do (or are allowed to do – Boise State) so the respect is there to be garnered if the teams perform well enough.

This season has taken most of the wind out of my sails. I love UGA and live and die with each game. Thruth be told, we are gonna get slaughtered this weekend. It seems that any offense that is having their problems suddenly runs on all 12 cylinders when they take the field against UGA. We have no home run hitters this season except for AJ. Our defense plays good for 3 downs and then gives up a 30 yard play time after time. I’m frustrated, but still a dawg. Just make it through this season and see what the crystal ball produces next year. Right now, we are behind FL, AL, Old Miss, LSU and TN. I’m scared to death about every single game we play from here on out, except TN Tech. Oh well….

what is funny but sad, if Maryland Terrapins who are currently 2-6 with a win over Clemson as well were in the Mountain West Conference as TCU is in, they would be 8-0 and ranked 6th in the nation. Noone would question it and hail Coach Friedgen as being one of the best coaches in the NCAA. That goes the same if they were in the WAC like Boise State.. they would reign and could even play for National Championship. And the idiots who vote for these schools, TCU and Boise State do not get it. Their conference opponents could not beat Div 1AA schools

Tony the commish needs to bring down the hammer on the entire officiating apparatus of the SEC. The officiating is fast turning the SEC into a joke. This is three straight weeks of incompetence.
I say the SEC athletic directors need to say NO to any fines from the commissioners office. What is the commish going to do, kick Tennessee & Miss State out of the SEC?

Congrats to Clemson on having the will to come back seven times on the road to take a lead and/or tie and eventually have somebody on their team step up BIG and make plays when they had to be made. Clemson did it, so did Iowa and Notre Dame.
While it was a great game to watch because of all the points scored man, it was also a painful one to watch from the UM vantage point. Eleven penalties, four turnovers — who can U beat when U play that sloppy? Here’s one of those “ref calls” for U Tony:
We score on a 56-yard fumble recovery and we get flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct, not excessive celebration. The reason? UM safety Randy Phillips took his helmet off (he didn’t score) and according to Randy Shannon, Phillips was 50 yards away from the end zone and as he was walking back to the bench he took of his lid while still on the field. So we had to kick off from our 15.
C.J. SPiller is one heck of an athlete…not just a RB but an athlete. He’s going to make some NFL team a whole lot better next year. On two of his TD’s:
His 90-yard kickoff return right before halftime was a killer. Get this: The UM coaches told our kicker to squib it and DO NOT KICK TO SPILLER. So what does he do? He nails a line drive shot so fast to C.J. that when he catches it there isn’t a UM player withing 20 yards of him. Our kicker was benched for the remainder of the game and possibly the rest of the season.
On the second half 56-yard TD pass catch C.J. was covered by one of our two best LB’s: Sean Spence. That’s the good news. The bad news is Spence had no business being on the field, let alone trying to cover somebody who can outrun a dog. Spence injured his knee in the first half and they had to put a brace on his knee. The video shows Spence limping down the field trying to catch a meteor. What a mismatch. Spence was pulled because of his injury.
One defensive note: I think we blitzed one time in the game and when we did we got to Parker. He may be a redshirt freshman but we made him look all-conference. Our front four couldn’t get past their front five, or six (RB) or seven (TE). Clemson blitzed effectively, we didn’t even try. (BTW, I hope the Clemson TE is going to be OK after that hit.)
Regardless, kudos to Clemson. It sucks to lose in OT but we couldn’t hold any of the seven leads we had and when we had a chance to run out the clock at the end of regulation we couldn’t do that either. So for the second year in a row, destiny gives us a shot at the title game if we take care of biz. We didn’t, so we won’t as we step aside and tell GT/VT, “We don’t want it, U can have it.”. What could of been.

Tech is looking impressive, and as a Dawg fan, that’s tough to say. Too bad their remaining sked looks like it does, it’s not going to help them one bit. Additionally, playing an ACC championship game against at least a 3 to 4 loss team won’t propel them into a Natl Championship game. Should they run the table, look for them to get treated like Auburn in 2004.

When it comes to some conspiracy regarding the officiating, I just do not buy it. There have always been bad calls, and always will be bad calls. There will always be poor decisions. There will always be fans that feel as though they got jobbed.
Having been an official for nearly 30 years in another sport, I can say I have definitely made some poor decisions. We want to do the right thing, and sometimes we simply just make a huge mistake. What happens occasionally is the fans, coaches, announcers simply do not know the rules. The same fans that crucify an announcer one minute will applaud that announcer when he says something that benefits or praises their team.
I have seen and heard announcers make some horrible assessment of calls on games I did. They did not know the rules and made themselves out to be fools.

You can see the GT-Miami series becoming the ACC game of the year each season.

All of these teams recruit on a very high level and will be good for many years to come (despite UGA’s down year this season). The difference between the ACC officials and the sec officials is this….both are totally incompetent.
The ACC officials are usually incompetent for both sides. The sec is biased incompetent and usually favor one side over the other.
The only concern of playing the clarke county correctional institute on the last weekend in November. The incompetent sec officials are going to make their usual bad calls but they know they have to be careful to make them against Tech because if they make them against ugag they will get put on probation after ugag cries and cries and cries.
We would be much better off to get neutral officials from out west somewhere.

Tebow breaks Herschel’s record on Saturday against UGA. I love this setup. If I were Richt, my game plan against FL would be to throw the ball to AJ every single play. If Cox and AJ don’t get in sync quick it will be a very low scoring game for the Dawgs.

Go back to just last year and check UGA’s poll rating concerning your point #5. If I remember correctly, UGA was voted out of the #1 spot after winning their early games. Also,it was said at the time it was because they were winning ugly and not enough “style points” for their ranking. So, YES you can get voted out of the #1 spot while winning.

“Still, it doesn’t matter if the call was wrong or not.” Mr. Barnhart, you are absolutely WRONG! Coaches have a RIGHT to say what they think relative to officiating decisions. Neither Mullen nor Petrino were “crying wolf” nor does it make these coaches look bad when they state the OBVIOUS! Rather, what looks bad is any attempt to quiet those who have legitimate concerns. Reprimanding the officials rather than the coaches is the RIGHT thing to do in these situations. As a lawyer and Commissioner of the SEC, Mike Slive has the responsibility to make his conference as legitimate as possible. Encouraging the coaches to put their “tails between their legs” is cowardly.

The officials are fueling the fires of frustration by consistently being inconsistent. The League expects excellence from the officials but we are getting fair to mid at best. The coaches should reserve themselves and the comments for the SEC commissioner but it is getting to the point where too is too much.

I have been extremely concerned with McElroy’s play for the past 4 games. Before the season, I expected this kind of play from him but he set the bar so high with the first four games. Julio has been nursing an ankle injury since August but his lack of production has a lot more to do with McElroy. Also, McElroy’s security blanket, former Tech TE Colin Peek, was injured in pre-game warmups and didn’t play.
Bama’s coaches say they will get back to basics with the offense over the next two weeks. That coupled with much needed rest, will hopefully have us ready for LSU.

Miles, For every action there is a consequence. The coaches have a right to say what they think, but that does not make them immune from the consequences of those actions. The last thing anyone wants to hear is a bunch of players and coaches whining about calls week in and week out. The league has shown its willingness / responsibility to reprimand the officials. There’s no reason to play this out in the press until they show otherwise.

The replay in the UF/MSU game was total BS. No, it may have not affected the outcome, but it shows that there is a glaring problem within the SEC in regards to officiating. Funny thing to me is Gator fans who want to trash Mullen and label him as a whiner. Mullen is a Meyer Disciple. He has followed Meyer at every stop. From ND to UF. He was not whining about “Oh, how we could have won the game.” Not he was arguing the need for Refs to be held accountable for their actions. Obvious question here. If you can replay a call and have no time limit to determine the correct call, then how does the replay offical still screw it up?

M, no beef with the Techsters. I can live with not getting a couple of your recruits. Honestly, we’re not going to go head to head on many with them due to different styles of play. Johnson is a great coach and I hope we can renew UT- Tech in the future.

Heard that in Vols practice on Sunday they moved their biggest lineman (Hughes, Williams) to special teams on FG in hopes of preventing another Mt.Cody incident. I agree with UT96, ever since his freshman year he has been terrible. Palardy should help next year.

Florida could have easily won by 30 points last week. After Tebow scored on that 20 yr rush, Florida threw the ball every time in the red zone (except for Demps run).
I believe Tebow and Myer were saving Tebow’s rushing attempts in the endzone for UGA. The goal has been to break Walker’s record vs. Georiga all along.

UF could beat the dogs 55-0 and UGA fans will still cry it was the officials fault.

I say if the call was blown, then complain and take the penalty. Lane was just crying with no obvious blown call, but Miss State has a gripe that could have been a game/season/program changer and the replay booth blew it and that is unacceptable. Miss State’s play against UF makes me think this Tech offense is better than even I thought. GO JACKETS!

first of all for my dog friends, i think the upset is coming this week. florida has played with fire too many times and i think they get burned in jax.
i believe GT runs the table and goes to the orange bowl. we don’t have enough respect with the national media to make BCS title, even at 12-1. i just hope its two teams I respect that make it there. Sorry, but Boise and TCU don’t make that cut.

Looks like more people are beginning to see the BS behind the BCS. It’s all about $$ people, and the BCS is NOT going to let its cash-cow (SEC) fail. It’s not about finding the true champion by way of a playoff, it’s about $$ and nothing else. UNLESS one of them lose, AL & FL will be #1 & #2 on Dec. 5 in Atl. Looks great on TV, ad revenues will be huge, broadcast fees, media frenzy creating a “game of the century” for fans to be suckered into spending TONS of cash on tickets, memorabilia, fan fests, FG contests, and enough hype to choke a blue whale.
Get used to it fans ……. we are stuck being force-fed that the only relavant football in the NCAA is the SEC. All the BCS eggs are in one basket, and there is nothing we can do but sit back and take it. But it is nice to see more & more people who are realizing this. And if people don’t think the SEC commission is “benefitting” in some form by ensuring that at one SEC team is in the NC then you may need to have your head checked. It’s hard to believe these refs can be this bad without some outside influence telling them to be this bad.

Hey goat, No Way in Hades said that UT wouldn’t stay within 3TD’s of Bama if you read this post last Friday. After last season most Vol fans I know would be pleased with 8-4 or 7-5 and a top 10 recruiting class. They are on pace to do both. Both are losses, but would you rather lose 12-10 or 45-19? Go Vols!

Unlike Georgia last year, Florida came into the season as the defending national champion and as of right now they have a 17 or 18 game winning streak. Their primary opponent is the unrealistic expectations everyone had before the season that they’d just roll over everyone. Sure, they aren’t playing great on offense, but their defense is playing fantastic, which means they’ve got more room for fixing their offensive problems than other teams. I don’t see how you drop in the polls the defending national champs who haven’t lost a game in over a year.
Here’s a question I have: how come there aren’t cameras right on the goalline at these SEC games? I assumed that the Dustin Doe strip on the goalline wasn’t overturned because the angle of the camera left the evidence inconclusive. It looked like it was outside of the endzone, but the angle left just enough doubt in my mind that I could see why they couldn’t overturn it.
