Georgia Tech keeps rolling at Virginia

If Auburn’s offense had not been missing in action last week in a 21-14 loss to Kentucky, your Fearless Forecaster would have gone 10-0. We picked Georgia Tech’s upset of No. 4 Virginia Tech. We promised you and Arkansas-Florida would be closer than the experts thought. (Insert your comment about the officiating here).

That gives us a record of 52-18 on the season.

Except for Georgia Tech’s visit to Virginia, it looks like a less than exciting set of games this Saturday. But that’s when the fireworks—and the upsets—usually start.  Look for at least one big surprise this weekend.

Let’s get on with the Fearless Friday Forecast:

1. Georgia Tech at Virginia: It looks like Cavalier coach Al Groh has saved his bacon after an 0-3 start. Groh realized that the spread offense was not going to work and went back to basics. Now Virginia is playing power football and pretty good defense. But if Georgia Tech quarterback Josh Nesbitt keeps playing like he has the past four weeks, the Yellow Jackets are going to be very hard to beat. Tech rolls to 7-1. Georgia Tech 28, Virginia 13.

2. Tennessee at Alabama: The Volunteers are feeling kind of frisky since taking Georgia to the woodshed on Oct. 10. But Tennessee needs to realize that the Alabama defense is an entirely different animal.  Alabama, for instance, can actually rush the passer. This team eats quarterbacks for lunch and will make life very difficult for Jonathan Crompton. The Tennessee defense will keep the Vols in the game for about a half. But Alabama simply wears opponents down and beats them up. Alabama pulls away in the fourth quarter. Alabama 24, Tennessee 6.

3. Arkansas at Ole Miss: We wouldn’t have said this before the season started, but Arkansas will win this game because it has the better quarterback. Ryan Mallett was brilliant against the Florida defense last week and has 14 touchdown passes and only three interceptions. Jevan Snead of Ole Miss bounced back against UAB last week but he still has nine interceptions. Ole Miss could win this game because of its defensive front. But I just have a hunch that Arkansas is going to play well after the tough loss at Florida. Arkansas 24, Ole Miss 21.

4. Auburn at LSU: Auburn started 5-0 and got its fans all excited. Now the Tigers have dropped two straight to Arkansas and Kentucky and now their fans are getting worried. If Auburn quarterback Chris Todd can regain his touch, Gene Chizik’s team has a shot in Baton Rouge. That’s because LSU still hasn’t figured out what kind of offense it wants to be. Still, it’s worth noting that Auburn has not won in Baton Rouge since 1999. LSU 21, Auburn 14.

5. Florida at Mississippi State: Tim Tebow goes against his old offensive coordinator Dan Mullen, who is now the head guy in Starkville. Florida played one of its worst offensive games in a long time against Arkansas with four turnovers and six quarterback sacks. Tebow also had to carry the ball 27 times, which is something you’d rather not do with a quarterback who just had  a concussion. Mississippi State doesn’t have the athletes Mullen needs, but the Bulldogs are moving the ball on just about everybody. Florida could also be caught looking ahead to next week’s trip to Jacksonville to play Georgia. Florida wins another ugly game.  One historical note. If Tebow scores two rushing touchdowns, he will break Herschel Walker’s career SEC mark of 49.  Florida 24, Miss. State 10.

6. Vanderbilt at South Carolina: Vanderbilt has won two straight against the Gamecocks but don’t figure to make it three. Still Steve Spurrier has great respect for the Commodores, who manhandled his Gamecocks two years ago in Columbia. That loss started a five-game losing streak to end the season. South Carolina (5-2) needs this win to become bowl eligible. Spurrier also knows that his team is facing the really brutal part of its schedule with Tennessee, Arkansas, Florida, and Clemson remaining. “Our schedule is tougher the latter part of the year. We know that,” Spurrier said. South Carolina 24, Vanderbilt 7.

7. Clemson at Miami: Clemson fans are rightfully confused. They watched their Tigers lose to 1-3 Maryland on Oct. 3 and it appeared that Dabo Swinney’s team was falling apart. After an off week, which included some serious and sometimes heated discussions among coaches and players, Clemson comes back to dominate Wake Forest 38-3. So is Clemson finally starting to turn the corner under Swinney? We should find out Saturday when the Tigers go  to No. 10 Miami. The Hurricanes are 5-1 but they’ve only played three ACC games. They may also be the ACC’s best hope at a national championship team. I like Miami at home. Miami 21, Clemson 17.

8. Boston College at Notre Dame: Boston College has won six straight games in this series between the two major Catholic football playing schools. Paul Johnson of Georgia Tech will probably be the ACC coach of the year, but BC’s Frank Spaziani has to get some votes. The Eagles (5-2) were picked dead last in the ACC Atlantic and are currently leading the division. Here is your upset special of the week. Boston College 28, Notre Dame 24.

9. TCU at BYU: TCU (6-0) is No. 8 in the first BCS Standings and has a real shot to go 12-0 if the Horned Frogs can get past Max Hall and BYU. TCU has an underrated quarterback in Andy Dalton, whose 23 career wins at TCU is second only to the great Sammy Baugh, who had 29. Jerry Hughes might be the best defensive end in the country. This is the best game on the board this Saturday. TCU 31, BYU 24.

10. USF at Pittsburgh: Pittsburgh is 6-1 but the Panthers have been here before under Dave Wannstedt.  Pitt started 6-1 in 2006 and proceeded to lose its last five games to finish 6-6. The last time the Panthers were 7-1 was in 1982 when Dan Marino led them to a 9-1 start. Pittsburgh has found a star in freshman running back Dion Lewis, who is third in the nation in rushing at 131.14 yards per game. Pittsburgh, No. 20 in the first BCS standings, appears headed for a show down with No. 5 Cincinnati on Dec. 5 for the Big East championship. They will take care of USF. Pittsburgh 23, USF 13.

Did YOU just say to ME “You can dish it out, but you just can’t take it.” ?

That’s the funniest thing I have ever heard.

Jumbeauxtiger,

If you write something just copy and paste it onto a word doc and if the post gets eaten then just paste again another one or 2 times until the post takes. Its a minor pain and I don’t know why the software just eats our posts sometimes but if I write a lengthy post(and I usually do) then I’m sure to copy and save it just in case the post gets eaten.

Jumbeaux,

I like all your picks except ND and BC. The smart money would be like you and probably have ND a 7 pt favor and probably in a score just like you picked 34-27. But seeing as how I just can’t stand ND I gots to pick against them and take BC. Go eagles.

With a football history dating to 1896, Clemson has never lost nine straight games to ranked opponents. That’s the fate the Tigers will try to avoid against the Hurricanes.

CavsRule- Don’t be so hostile. I can see that the William & Mary game still hurts.

But the real reason I am posting is because I want to know what people think about this situation. Should GT be ranked above Florida if they lose to MSU and Tech wins. I think they should but something tells me that the sportswriters and Tebow lovers just won’t ket that happen. What do you think?

Ole Miss 24 Ark 21 Hogs have letdown after close call with Gators.

I agree. I like the Hogs, norrmally in this situation, but not after the heartbreaking loss LW at the hands of the AH-refs, just like what happens to the Dawgs the week before the TN game. Don’t know how or why it happens, but it does. Arky won’t be able to focus all week wondering what they could have done better or different, and they won’t be in this game either.

YEP, Yellow Fuzz, I did. I admit, many obnoxious Dawg fans have dumped on you Techsters over the years, and you guys are spewing all you can, while you can… and deservedly so, I guess. But, after all this blasting of 45-53, etal, I wonder how y’all will act when the roles are reversed again this year. You will not beat UGA this season, and you probably know it. CMR has his teams at peak performance by the end of the season, but he failed last year, as did the team. I attribute it to taking GT too lightly, especially after the shellacking they gave you in the first half. I guess it comes back to “Haunt You” (I love saying that around Halloween) when you take things for granted… like you are an automatic win this year. See you after that game, I hope. One of us will be eating crow. ;-)

Of course gt should be ranked ahead of the gators if they were to lose. We beat msu and our only loss as of today was against a top 10 team. The gators should already have a loss, if not for shady officiating.

BTW, there’s no way on God’s green football field that GT will lose to Virginia, CavsRule… not this year. And I agree GT should jump up over Florida if they win and Florida loses to Miss St (which I don’t see happening, but it could be close – they won’t want to embarrass their former OC). I do see Tenn giving the Tide all they can handle, but succuming (sp?) in the end, probably by bad officiating by another crew. For what it’s worth, I see Miami, ND, TCU and S. Florida pulling out wins as well.

Va revamped their offense at the start of the year to the spread. It was obviously a big mistake. If they were to play WM with their current o style, they win by 30. Just putting things in perspective. You can’t bring up that loss without mentioning this fact. It’s like comparing coke sales yoy back in the 80’s when they tried that new coke crap and sales plummeted.

I’m with you on that, Fled… I understand they made the change, but upsets happen (Any given Saturday). Army is becoming a better team and Vandy took them lightly (although they can’t afford to take any team lightly ;-) That said, I don’t think you can diss the Dawgs because they beat Vandy (after they lost to Army). The Dawgs did put a whoopin’ in them though. They didn’t squeek by. I’m telling you, I’ve watched this team (and many, many FSU teams with Richt as coach), and CMR gets them better, not worse. Everyone thought they would lose 3-5 games this year… and they still may. But I don’t see it – I see them shocking a lot of teams and viewers the rest of the way. That’s the kind of Barkin’Dog I am… woof-woof.

Come to think of it that would be a good $5 or $20 bar bet to win if you bet someone in a bar that Georgia did indeed beat bama this year in futbol. Most people would swear up and down we didn’t even play this year but you just pull out your little newspaper clipping and win your $5 or win a free beer bet. I’m sure the dawg fans don’t give a damn about beating us in soccer. football, basketball, etc is a little different but even then we aren’t even big rivals with UGA in football. UT and Auburn is the folks we love to hate.

In women’s gymnastics though we really do have a hateful, intense rivalry with the gym dawgs. When Georgia comes to T-town we sell out Coleman coliseum for that contest. You wouldn’t think a sport featuring 90 lb teenage to early 20s girls would be that intense but it absolutely is.

I’m signing off. Good talkin witcha. Get the dogs rested up and healed up and good luck when you take on the gators. Nothing spells a better chance for an upset than a well rested, healthy team. Not just physical rest but it seems the dawgs need an emotional rest after playing 7 straight without a cupcake. Uusally everybody feasts on a couple of cupcakes in the early season but the dawgs don’t get a cupcake until I think Tenn Tech in the 8th or 9th game.

Ga has done better in the past later in the season. Not last year though. And I don’t see it happening this year. Not saying it won’t. I just don’t think they have the talent this year. And next year? Well you will have to break in another qb so? I would start giving Murray and some other people some snaps during and after the uf game assuming uf is up by a hefty margin in the second half. You don’t want to go into next year like this year.

Tech fans continue to sit there and post the dumbest thoughts on National Championship Game.

Miami of Florida beat you soundly 33-17.

Tech has to be within 5 spots and have beat Miami of Florida head-to-head, which Tech did not.

Miami of Florida is also ahead of Georgia Tech by 3 positions in the BCS Rankings.

Neither team plays a single good team, except Tech plays UGA whom they will never beat, in the last game.

There are no other even beginning to be reasonable opponents for either Georgia Tech nor Miami of Florida.

Nothing Georgia Tech can do to jump Miami of Florida, and if Georgia Tech did jump Miami of Florida and Miami of Florida is within 5 spots of Georgia Tech, Miami of Florida goes to the BCS Bowl Game representing this said sorry conference, the ACC.

This is because Georgia Tech LOST to Miami of Florida head-to-head 17-33.

Your season was over the nanosecond you LOST to Miami of Florida.

You will NOT beat UGA anyway, and will drop farther behind Miami of Florida.

You have run your mouth about how great you are in a sorry conference because instead of LOSING to UGA for the 60th time, you delayed that 60th LOSS to UGA until this season.

I hope that this clarifies just how absolutely void of any common sense you are at Georgia Tech.

National Championship, B.S. Tech has NEVER EVER been ranked Number 1 by the AP Poll ever. And, this year is obviously no different with you Number 13.

Now, run your mouth some more.

BuLLdawg,

Great that we caused you to take time to do some home work. Maybe if you had done more of it when you were at georgia you wouldn’t be so ignorant today.

I have found numerous flaws in your research and graded it below. You may want to print this out and take it back to your maintenance office on Monday (full of 1980’s memorabilia I am sure) and crank up your Harry Munson 1980’s highlight 8 track, and make some corrections. This is not some crip course at the university of georgia you are taking. THIS is real life in the real world little man.

BuLLdawg = F+

“Tech plays UGA whom they will never beat, in the last game”.
45-42 proves otherwise.

“Nothing Georgia Tech can do to jump Miami, and if Georgia Tech did jump Miami”
LOL.

“Your season was over the nanosecond you LOST to Miami of Florida”.
LOL.

“You will NOT beat UGA anyway, and will drop farther behind Miami of Florida”.
We will beat Georgia again (I guarantee it) but because that will make you like 5-7 at the time that won’t help us make up any ground on Miami. How about winning some games to add value to our strength of schedule!

“I hope that this clarifies just how absolutely void of any common sense you are at Georgia Tech”.
?

“National Championship, B.S. Tech has NEVER EVER been ranked Number 1 by the AP Poll ever. And, this year is obviously no different with you Number 13”.
True, but even that is better than being ranked number 1 in the AP Preseason Poll only to drop to 104 in just 13 months. Yank on the ripcord dude!

“Now, run your mouth some more”.
I will because at georgia you just fit the mold. At Georgia Tech, we make the mold!
