Can Georgia Tech finally win at Virginia?

Five burning questions as we head into the weekend:

1. Can Georgia Tech win on the road again? The Yellow Jackets have already won impressively at Florida State and Mississippi State. But winning at Charlottesville has proven to be a tough thing to do lately for Tech. I was at Virginia in 1990, the last time Georgia Tech won up there in what was one of the better games I have ever seen. Tech has played in Charlottesville eight times since and lost some heartbreakers. In 1999 Tech was 6-1 and ranked No. 7 when the Jackets lost 45-38. In 2001 they were 6-2 and lost 39-38. This season Virginia and Al Groh seemed headed off the deep end when they started 0-3. Now they have won three straight and are starting to find some answers on offense. This will not be an easy game for Georgia Tech. In case you were wondering about those eight Georgia Tech losses they were:

1992: L, 55-24

1995: L, 41-14

1997: L, 35-31

1999: L 48-35

2001: L, 39-38

2003: L, 29-17

2005: L, 27-17

2007: L, 28-23

2. How badly will Alabama take Jonathan Crompton out of his comfort zone? The Tennessee quarterback had an excellent game against Georgia on Oct. 10. But in that game he had time to throw because Georgia could not put pressure on him. The Alabama defense does a lot of things well. But one  thing the Bama defense does very well is take quarterbacks out of their comfort zone. Tyrod Taylor (Virginia Tech), Ryan Mallett (Arkansas), Jevan Snead (Ole Miss) and Stephen Garcia (South Carolina) combined for 38.5 percent passing against the Alabama defense. Here is the breakdown of what the Alabama defenses did against these quarterbacks:

Quarterback———————-Att/Comp——–Yds——TD—–Int

Tyrod Taylor (Va. Tech)———-9/20————–91——-0——-0

Ryan Mallett (Ark)—————-12/35———–160——-1——-1

Jevan Snead (Ole Miss)————11/34———140——–0——4

Stephen Garcia (S. Carolina)———20/46———214———0——1

Total—————————52/135 (38.5 pct)—-605——-1——-5

3. Can Clemson do Georgia Tech a favor and knock off Miami? Clemson really impressed me last week when the Tigers dominated Wake Forest 38-3. You normally don’t see a Jim Grobe team get beat that badly. With RB C.J. Spiller and QB Kyle Parker, and an improving defense, Clemson has enough athletes to make a game of it if the Tigers don’t beat themselves with dumb mistakes. Georgia Tech basically needs Miami to lose if the Jackets are going to have a realistic chance of winning the Coastal Division and going to the ACC championship game.

4. Can Boston College beat Notre Dame for the seventh straight time?  This series is tied at 9-9 and the Eagles always seem to give one of their better efforts against their sister Catholic institution. Notre Dame lost a gut-wrencher last week at home to Southern Cal. How much did that take out of the team? Jon Tenuta’s Irish defense is still struggling. Boston College has found a running back in sophomore Montel Harris, who had 264 yards and scored five touchdowns in a 52-20 win over N.C. State. If Notre Dame (4-2) loses it will eliminate any hope the Irish had of going to a BCS bowl.

5. Can Auburn get back on track? The Tigers started 5-0 and got their fans, many of whom were expecting the worst in the first year under Gene Chizik, a little excited. But in the past two weeks Auburn has struggled, first on the road against Arkansas (a 44-23 loss) and then at home against Kentucky (a 21-14 loss). Now the questions abound. Auburn had only one offensive touchdown against Kentucky. Quarterback Chris Todd, who started out so hot, has cooled considerably as defenses have adjusted. The defense had problems against a Kentucky team that had lost its starting quarterback. But in the SEC it’s tough to get things turned around once they start going sour. You just don’t have many chances to breathe. Auburn has to figure things out during a trip to LSU. Auburn hasn’t won in Baton Rouge since 1999, Tommy Tuberville’s first season as coach. Two years ago LSU threw a touchdown pass with one second left to win 30-24.

Here are the results of Auburn’s last four trips to LSU:

2001: L, 27-14

2003: L, 31-7

2005: L, 20-17

2007: L, 30-24

Don’t believe everything you see on these blogs folks. I’m actually a teenager with big dreams and little, well, you-know-what. Some of you clowns think that I make a lot of money and drive an RV, etc. The truth is I am not a business man (c’mon who would spend the time I do on blogs instead of running their business?) but I can pretend to be one on an anonymous blog. The fact that you respond to my statements is the only thing that matters to me. You see, I’m just a kid that has nothing to do and needs a little entertainment. Now that we have that out of the way you can understand the rest of my posts!

funny, that was a good one. You know even with all the shyt I’ll talk on here… never impersonated any of you losers. That’s a new low, anyone care to fess up?

YellowFuzz now that you’ve gone silent… you must have known where I was going, 59-36 is GT’s all time losing record against UGA. I’m going to look in a second, but I’m not even sure you’ve ever won a decade.

GT has a 37% winning percentage against UGA… you guys just need to admit what you are and move on.

Hal, I knew your were blowing smoke when you made the comment about needing a write off so Bush wouldn’t put his hands in your coffers. Bush LOWERED taxes. Just wait and see what Prez O does to all our tax burden, and now he is going to start cutting your salary so that you won’t even have a tree to hang your figs on. Geez! But, even with all that, the puppies are going to get their curly tailed butts whipped next week in Jacksonville and then again in November in the Yellow Jacket nest on North Ave.

Delbert of course it is, you wrote it. U-No, Never said Bush did anything with taxes, just that the 18% per year write off was needed in 2007…. cognition is a bytch isn’t it?

You’re probably right that UF is gonna whip us, you think you’d fair any better? Not very likely. Listen, it isn’t news that UGA isn’t what it’s been the last 6 or 7 years, you’re all beating a dead horse. But you’re also showing you jealousy and/or ignorance by denying what we have accomplished in that time. And by acting as though beating us somehow crowned you all team of the decade.

Speaking of decades, I did look and GT has won 2 decades, the 1900’s and the 1950’s… outside those 2, we own the jackets. Y’all are just renting BD stadium from us boys…

LOL! As I sstated earlier, I have been attending the games since 1960, maybe even a year or two earlier, as my dad graduated from Tech as well and took me to all the games from when I was age 4. I have no jealousy, envy, or any other disfunctional emotions concerning UGA, their record against us for however long you care to go back in time. I live for the moment and look forward to the future. The past is just that, past. Except to say that last year was sweet! Throw all those facts and figures around all you want to, I am secure enough in my own being and in Tech’s current situation to say that right now, I like what I see going on at the Yellow Jacket nest at North Avenue and nothing or no one can mess that up for me. I will not be sad if the puppies beat the Gators next week, in fact, I don’t care much for them either. I certainly will not grab a tissue and wipe any tears if the Gators bite the hide off y’all’s hairy butts. All this BS is part of the fun of the Tech/UGA rivalry and it has gone on for years. You ought to be at our family gathering at Thanksgiving, The family is pretty evenly spit betweeen Techies and Puppies! It gets really rich as the day progresses!

actually GT Steve, JC’s not the problem. Funny story, during a game on ESPN (USF/CINCY) which was last Thursday, they showed Heisman lock Colt McCoy’s stats… he had 70 yds more passing, same # TD’s and 2 less int’s than JC. When 2 of JC’s 8 ints came on prayers at the end of games. Joe’s playing fine when he gets a little protection and by god a running game. Running and defense are our issues at the moment, not Joe. Yeah he could still ring up 300 yds on GT… I wouldn’t guess 400, but 300? Sure…

If GT is so insignificant and beneath UGA football, why are you on this message board?

….and if you’ve got so much cash, why aren’t you using it to lobby to make some changes up in Athens?

We are 6-1 (coming off a win over the #4 team in the country) and sure there are things we need to improve upon, but UGA has SO much more ground to make up.

Worry about your division rival who ostensibly has determined the success (or lack thereof) of your program since 1990. At this point in the season, your being on our blog is just a sign of your insecurity of things to come with your program in the future.

I wouldn’t know, I haven’t watched, I just assume UGA will start preparing more for next year at some time over the next few games. But good for Joe if he is having good stats, you know how ESPN and CBS are, they lock onto 2 or 3 people all year and never change.

U-No… I could imagine. Mine isn’t divided, we all graduated from UGA but I have several friends on either side and enjoy the repartee’. However, don’t think for a second that when the fun turns into stupid statements that have no validity that the dude won’t get challenged. You can talk smack while being realistic about stats, mascots, fan bases etc. I’ve never said your fans are all red necks, or 4 eyed geeks, never BS’s your record up or down, or trashed your stadium or traditions. It’s a fact that we buy more GT tickets on some years the GT fans do. Its a fact that the history shows that even when you rise as you are right now, we generally rise right back. 100 years of history shows the same trends, GT backers have been saying they’d turn your way for 70 years… never have yet. Don’t think they will either. You guys beat an avg UGA team last year that was already showing signs of un-raveling down the stretch by 3 points… congratulations! But for gods sake no crown came with it. This year will stand on its own soon enough, don’t wish it hear too soon. Remember when we watch that game, it’ll be over for another year for all intents and purposes.

Johnny, not on your blog… picked this argument up on our page too. Also never said GT was insignificant… actually said several times on here that they are very good. And I think this yrs game will be a great one. I’m jsut counter pointing a bunch of idiots throughout the day who’ve said UGA is in one way or another (various statements from various folks) in a long decline, one said Mark Richt hasn’t accomplished anything, some have stated the Tech owns UGA, always had.

Those are what I’ve been arguing with all day. You’re a good program looks like with an apathetic fan base unfortunately. In a city like Atlanta when a team can’t sell out a 55k seat stadium for the #4 teams game it kind of says something about the program and or the fan base. But I can not take reading these mindless posts by fans who probably couldn’t even name your last 3 coaches acting like Tech somehow leaped into the pantheon of college football simply by beating us last year by 3 points. Unfortunately the convo spiraled out of control at some point.

Agreed that no crown came with that win, but you cannot argue that a team who was preseason ranked #1 that touted the 2009 NFL OVERALL #1 draft pick under center and the #12 overall draft pick 5-7 yards behind him was average. That seems like ‘excuse-making’. GT fans shouldn’t crown themselves over the win but at the same time UGA fans shouldn’t down play the win either.

Hal

GT Steve I’ve tried to be reasonable with every argument until insults started flying toward me or my team. I played at UGA (practice squad I admit) but by God I love my school, and I’ll not sit while folks deface it.

johnny lets point something out that usually gets youalls blood boiling, then I hear things like “excuses excuses” In Marks previous 7 season, UGA had experienced IN TOTAL 15 season ending injuries. In 2008, we had 18… in 1 year. yeah we were EXTREMELY disappointed but we also realize what happened and that Mark may have done his best coaching job ever at UGA. The o-line had a different starting set in EVERY game do to this. The names, Stafford, Moreno, etc made it… but none of their help made it to the end of the year.

As a general rule, I don’t throw stats around and stuff like that. Maybe on a same year comparison it is interesting to throw some stats out, but long standing history, won-loss records going back to Adam and Eve, and stuff like that are realitively meaningless to current events. I enjoy the rivarly banter, stay away from trashing family heritage, and try to play off other’s silly comments in a humorous manner. When it turns ugly I usually bail, I have no time for gutter stuff. It is what Furman Bisher called it a long time ago, Clean Old Fashion Hate.

There are certainly some idiot GT fans and for their behavior ‘us’ decent GT fans apologize.

As I’m sure you are aware, when your own AD says that ‘you can’t consistently win at a place like GT because of the rigorous academic requirements’ (and I’m paraphrasing), then Ofcourse your program is going to suffer and that sort of GUTLESS, SPINELESS, APATHY permeates every aspect of your program including fan base support/growth. Our new AD has a completely different attitude. He, like CPJ, is a winner. I assure you that by the end of 2010, every BD game (save for maybe Duke and our Div 1-AA games) will be a sell out.

One more comment: Let’s face it. When you go to UGA you are a Bulldog for life. When you got to Tech you are a Yellow Jacket for life. The hatred never ends and most enjoy seeing the other school’s team lose almost as much as they enjoy seeing their own team win.

With that in mind Tech grad Marc Curles should never be allowed to ref another Georgia football game. And do not forget that that Tech grad SEC Director of Officiating Rogers Redding is the one who assigns him to the Georgia games.

And let’s not forget how hard the SEC crews have been on Georgia for the past few years. Some say it is for the Georgia celebration two years ago but this has been going on for longer than 2 years. Georgia is one of the most penalized teams in the country and we have been willing to chalk it up to not enough discipline. The AJC has almost made a artical series our of that.

But perhaps Rogers Redding is not the fair minded head of SEC officiating that the SEC paints him out to be, Perhaps that Tech hatred for Georgia still burns deeply in his soul and his spoken or unspoken direction to his ref teams is throw the flag at Georgia if they even look like we can penalize them.

Don’t forget the Jaspe rSanks non-fumble that led to a Tech win and the suspension of the SEC refs from working the SEC CG about ten years ago. I ref’ed little league and the first thing they taught me was you can’t call what you can’t see and the ref’s admitted that none of them saw him fumble because he didn’t. The ball was ripped out after he was down and all the refs saw was a bunch of Tech players jumping up and down claiming there was a fumble on their home field so the refs called one.

I guess if Tech cannot compete on the field (until this year) then having Redding Rogers in the SEC home office over the refs is the next best thing. Perhaps Grant Field should be changed to Redding Rogers Field because he sure does more for Tech than whoever Grant was.

Redding Rogers needs to go and Marc Curles needs to be fired if the SEC is to maintain any integrity. Otherwise if the team Redding wants to win has the lock then why tune in? The only reason I can think of is to see which team Redding has picked to win.

Is anybody getting their pockets lined from all this? I don’t think so. I think the SEC is just Redding’s little toy and he has his refs call the shots for the teams he wants to win. What a jerk.

Texas: Vince Young 2 Colt McCoy

Oh yea, the state of Georgia’s #1 HS WR in 2008 was Stephen Hill. He went to Tech.
Welcome back to reality. UGA is an average program that had an above average decade. Fact is Kiffin’s gettin UT back to where it was 10 years ago and CPJ doing the same at Tech. Where were they at 10 years ago? Beating UGA.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Joe Cox?? 7:33PM post:

Dude, here goes another techie acting as though GT was some super program and UGA’s dominance of Tech just started. Yeah 10 years ago, GT beat UGA 3 times, 2 of those 3 games got officials suspended the following season. Even still that’s 3 wins. Since 1980 Tech is 7-21 against UGA.

That’s not to say that the program isn’t looking good at the moment, it is. PJ is a very solid coach and if he stays he’ll always have a good program. But just as I said to GTSteve, 1 win last year by 3 points didn’t come with any crown nor obviously any post season hardware. Hell you didn’t even finish ranked higher than us. Your post shows complete ignorance and jealousy. If you’re a real Tech fan, lifelong fan, you should enjoy the moment because god only knows it won’t last forever (unless you’re florida apparently).

Now, to your post… Matt to Joe v/s those other names on that list isn’t all that uncommon. First of all, Chris leak was an average recruit, Vince Young was above average but turned into a beast toward the end. Bottom line is Matt Stafford while still in high school, Mel Kiper and Todd McShay both said he would be the #1 pick in the draft when he went. No kid wants to come in behind that kind of prospect, a dearth is to be expected. UF is lucky lucky lucky Tebow stayed, the Brantly kid would not have been ready to step in full time this year, no way.
