Can Georgia Tech finally win at Virginia?

Five burning questions as we head into the weekend:

1. Can Georgia Tech win on the road again? The Yellow Jackets have already won impressively at Florida State and Mississippi State. But winning at Charlottesville has proven to be a tough thing to do lately for Tech. I was at Virginia in 1990, the last time Georgia Tech won up there in what was one of the better games I have ever seen. Tech has played in Charlottesville eight times since and lost some heartbreakers. In 1999 Tech was 6-1 and ranked No. 7 when the Jackets lost 45-38. In 2001 they were 6-2 and lost 39-38. This season Virginia and Al Groh seemed headed off the deep end when they started 0-3. Now they have won three straight and are starting to find some answers on offense. This will not be an easy game for Georgia Tech. In case you were wondering about those eight Georgia Tech losses they were:

1992: L, 55-24

1995: L, 41-14

1997: L, 35-31

1999: L 48-35

2001: L, 39-38

2003: L, 29-17

2005: L, 27-17

2007: L, 28-23

2. How badly will Alabama take Jonathan Crompton out of his comfort zone? The Tennessee quarterback had an excellent game against Georgia on Oct. 10. But in that game he had time to throw because Georgia could not put pressure on him. The Alabama defense does a lot of things well. But one  thing the Bama defense does very well is take quarterbacks out of their comfort zone. Tyrod Taylor (Virginia Tech), Ryan Mallett (Arkansas), Jevan Snead (Ole Miss) and Stephen Garcia (South Carolina) combined for 38.5 percent passing against the Alabama defense. Here is the breakdown of what the Alabama defenses did against these quarterbacks:

Quarterback———————-Att/Comp——–Yds——TD—–Int

Tyrod Taylor (Va. Tech)———-9/20————–91——-0——-0

Ryan Mallett (Ark)—————-12/35———–160——-1——-1

Jevan Snead (Ole Miss)————11/34———140——–0——4

Stephen Garcia (S. Carolina)———20/46———214———0——1

Total—————————52/135 (38.5 pct)—-605——-1——-5

3. Can Clemson do Georgia Tech a favor and knock off Miami? Clemson really impressed me last week when the Tigers dominated Wake Forest 38-3. You normally don’t see a Jim Grobe team get beat that badly. With RB C.J. Spiller and QB Kyle Parker, and an improving defense, Clemson has enough athletes to make a game of it if the Tigers don’t beat themselves with dumb mistakes. Georgia Tech basically needs Miami to lose if the Jackets are going to have a realistic chance of winning the Coastal Division and going to the ACC championship game.

4. Can Boston College beat Notre Dame for the seventh straight time?  This series is tied at 9-9 and the Eagles always seem to give one of their better efforts against their sister Catholic institution. Notre Dame lost a gut-wrencher last week at home to Southern Cal. How much did that take out of the team? Jon Tenuta’s Irish defense is still struggling. Boston College has found a running back in sophomore Montel Harris, who had 264 yards and scored five touchdowns in a 52-20 win over N.C. State. If Notre Dame (4-2) loses it will eliminate any hope the Irish had of going to a BCS bowl.

5. Can Auburn get back on track? The Tigers started 5-0 and got their fans, many of whom were expecting the worst in the first year under Gene Chizik, a little excited. But in the past two weeks Auburn has struggled, first on the road against Arkansas (a 44-23 loss) and then at home against Kentucky (a 21-14 loss). Now the questions abound. Auburn had only one offensive touchdown against Kentucky. Quarterback Chris Todd, who started out so hot, has cooled considerably as defenses have adjusted. The defense had problems against a Kentucky team that had lost its starting quarterback. But in the SEC it’s tough to get things turned around once they start going sour. You just don’t have many chances to breathe. Auburn has to figure things out during a trip to LSU. Auburn hasn’t won in Baton Rouge since 1999, Tommy Tuberville’s first season as coach. Two years ago LSU threw a touchdown pass with one second left to win 30-24.

Here are the results of Auburn’s last four trips to LSU:

2001: L, 27-14

2003: L, 31-7

2005: L, 20-17

2007: L, 30-24

Again allow me to interject facts. You sec homers talk how mighty your top teams are. And you piss on teams like MSU. MISS St lost to LSU at home by 4. MSU had 4, that’s FOUR, turnovers to LSU’s ZERO. Miss st had first and goal and couldn’t punch it in. GT ran all over MSU and beat them by 11 at their place. So enough with the our teams are so much better bs. LSU could barely beat MSU. And I am most certainly taking MSU this weekend and the points the gators are getting. If the officials call the game fairly, Fla doesn’t win by more than 2 tds.

Larry, who’s the idiot. Look at one of your GT buddies posts earlier. Somehow UF has already played the hardest schedule to date (although frankly I don’t even believe that) but that’s the “expert” conclusion. Again, avg SOS for top 5 ACC teams, 25th, for the top 5 SEC teams 12…. facts r facts nerds

Larry you really are a part time fan obviously. You have no idea how the game of football swings. Ever heard of the movie “Any Given Sunday”? Same applies in college football. Lateral comps don’t apply. We hung 52 on Arky, UF couldn’t… thing we’ll hang 52 on UF? USC lost to Stanford a couple years back, stands to reason Stanford would win the PAC 10 right?

C’mon dumbo, every saturday stands alone. LSU was looking ahead to UGA or maybe even past us to UF who knows? GT got SHREDDED last year in the bowl game. ANyone think they would have won the ACC?

Oh, and btw… no chance the refs don’t help UF, they always have.

GT SOS 7
Miami SOS 16
VT SOS 2
Clemson SOS 28
FSU SOS 4

I should just stop here but i will go ahead and do your teams.
UF SOS 46
Bama SOS 26
LSu SOS 22
SC SOS 24
Ark SOS 6

And you still lie and say your top 5 teams have higher SOS? Not even close. ACC avg is around 10. Your average is around 25

1. Time is RogerDawg’s new disguise since he has made a season of so many idiotic comments that even most UGA fans are ready to vomit after having to endure his excuse for logic. He has carefully tried to disguise this by entering comments with both monikers, but if you read carefully, it’s that same drivel.

2. At the beginning of the season, I absolutely feared the Virginia game – especially coming after the Hokies. I actually feel pretty good about Saturday as Johnson has shown true talent at keeping the players responsible.

3. I think Tech will win out, but remain concerned about a let down on the road (Duke can throw the ball and our pash rush/defense is not where it needs to be). You simply cannot count out Georgia, either. It is a rivalry game and you can throw out the records; emotion can carry the day. However, Joe Cox, Willie Martinez, and Paul Johnson make me feel better about the Yellojackets chances.

4. Alabama’s offensive line and the inability of their new quarterback to throw against better defenses will catch up to them at some point in the season. Will it be Tennessee – a rivalry game of emotion? Ingram’s running makes the line look better than it is. That said, everyone, including Flordia has warts.

5. Tech and Miammi will probabaly win out. If Miammi loses to South Florida and Tech runs the table, it all comes down to the BCS standings to determine the division winner. If Georgia Tech is ranked highest, but Miami is ranked within five AND ahead of a 2 loss Virginia Tech team, Miami goes based on head to head with GT. If Miami is more than five spots down or behind as a result of the loss to So. Florida, GT would go.

6. I’ve called Johnson’s offense the flex bone – only because you get an X in the name – it doesn’t matter what youcall it but both the Georgia and Tech guys have accurately described key elements and I’m not sure they aren’t talking past one another on it due to semantics – which don’t matter. One of the key features to it’s success that is rarely mentioned by any one is the crackback chop and cut blocks. As a defender, you must no only hold your assignment, but you must fend off a chop or cut block quickly, often coming from the side when your focus is following the ball. Nesbitt’s last touchdown against VT was a prime example. The safety was in perfect position to make the play, but was cut off his feet from the side opening up a hole I could get five yards through.

Hal you really have no thinking capability. I never said you look how many points one team scores and assume that another team will do the same. We played MSU the week after LSu did. Some teams get better. Some worse. But you can’t deny that MSU lost by only 4 in a game they should have won. Bama is the only team that has shown anything this year as far as scary good. Fla is not dominant. The sec is now a bunch of average teams and bama. The acc with gt, vt and miami are just as good as the sec’s top 3. Keep drinking the sec kramer kool aid. Last year you were tops. This year it’s a toss up.

Got 12? Who was it that blocked that FG? I thought it was him. It was a familiar name. I was a sophomore at UT and sat stunned after that game. Don’t think it will happen this weekend but that game was a great example of what a rivalry game means to players on both sidelines.

OTTO (NOT ME) SAID – “ND, Miss St, and Kansas are not exactly bragging material either.”

Are you stupid or something? We played ND when they were the #2 team in the Country with Quinn. Winning at Starkville is never easy, especially with their new offense. AND Kansas is 5-1 and BCS ranked.

Otto = not a genius.

Got 12 (NOT ME) said – “The Chick-Fil-A Bowl is SEC # 5 v. ACC # 2. In spite of this uneven pairing, the SEC is 13-8 against the ACC.”

While that is true THIS YEAR, that hasn’t been true for all of the matchups. For example, I know it was #3 in the ACC two years ago (after the Gator Bowl), and I believe it was #4 in the SEC a few years ago too. Got 12 – also not a genius.

U-No said “My reference was concerning the “sacredness” of the precious hedges referred to in a earlier post. As Ramble On observed they are bushes for crying out loud! They grow back!”

Actually they are weeds, not bushes. Look it up. Only a team like georgia would surround the field with weeds.

Hal – are you recognizing that the LSU/GT matchup wouldn’t have been 33-3 if they played again? Cause while you emphasize the “shredding,” the only shredding occurred on the scoreboard, not the game. Not saying they didn’t beat us soundly, but we certainly helped them (dropped ball in the end zone first series, muffed punt return, LSU successful onside, going for it on fourth and short from our own 25, etc.).

The mighty Jackets will fall this weekend. Fumble will be the word of the day as Tech’s dream of making it to ACC title game go down the tubes. Al Groh has the Cavs believing right now. 3-4 defense will also give Tech problems. Tech will finish up 9-3 after Georgia upsets them in their own backyard. GO WAHOOS.

Of course, Cavs crush Jackets. Check UVA’s dismantling of Indiana for the projected score. I don’t even know why GT bothers showing up. It would save everybody time and money if GT would just concede in advance. Pounding the wingless Jackets has become tedious. The GT people would be better served touring Monticello, or walking around our fabulous Lawn, than suffering through another crushing defeat at the hands of the Fightin’ Cavaliers. UVA has regained it’s rightful spot at the top of the Coastal Division, cosmic equilibrium has been restored.

Anyone who purports to know the outcome of a game before it is played is a fool. Every week we see upsets throughout the NCAA, regardless of ranking, conference affiliation, school records, or history. Some teams win while only completing a single pass (GT last week), while others win without gaining a single yard on the ground. That’s the reason they play the games, because none of us is “smart” enough to know the outcome in advance.

Consequently, when someone like “RAMBLE ON” says that the UVA game will be Tech’s last challenge for the year, it makes me cringe. While it’s true that the rest of Tech’s games are win-able, it’s equally true that they are LOSE-able. We have to show up every week prepared to play, both mentally and physically. I think our coaching staff … the one that employs the high school offense … has done a pretty good job of that over the last 20 games or so. I hope they can continue it through the rest of this season as well.

DogTard No doubt ND was overrated in ‘06 playing an over rated Big10 schedule. They were blown out by USC and LSU. ND beat GT anyways in ‘06. GT beat a 3-8 ND team in ‘07…..big deal

Miss. St. only won 2 conf games last year and has only beaten Vandy in conf. this year.

The SEC has played a lower selection against the ACC in the Peach (Chicken) Bowl somewhere between 4 and 6 and don’t forget the SEC puts their top 2 in BCS bowls where the ACC does not get a 2nd invite.

The contract was the Capital One and Cotton rotate between SEC #2 and the Peach gets SEC #4. Yes contracts get all muddled up with options, BCS deals, SECE vs SECW, where the fans will likely travel etc but that is the general idea. The Peach was pushing to move higher up that chain.

1) Tech-UVA- Interesting stat regarding wahoo’s dominance at home over the jackets. I’m hoping and thinking the jackets get it done in a very close one. Its tough to go on the road again though after a big, emotional win over VT. Letdowns get ya every time.

2) Bama-Should be a classic, physical game since both teams play a smash mouth type of run oriented offense. I’m a little worried about over confidence that I see in my brethren as if we’ve already won the game before even playing it. I’ve caught myself getting overconfident at times so here is a reminder

Proverbs 16:18

Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before stumbling.

haughty: disdainfully proud; snobbish; scornfully arrogant; supercilious:

3) Clemson-Miami- I’m pulling for Clemson since I would like to see the jackets win the ACC but while my heart says Clemson my brain says Miami.

4) Love watching ND lose and I’m hoping so because there is no way even a 2 loss ND team should hope to be in a BCS game. Wayyyy to easy a schedule. BC gets it done because ND is coming off a huge emotional letdown against USC and because BC is confident having whupped the Irish several in a row.

5) Auburn-LSU- Seems someone figured out how to slow down Auburn’s offense and beat em. LSU just has too much depth and too many athletes for a rebuilding Auburn playing with 10 players under the scholarship limit. It still will be fairly close though. Auburn has still exceeded expectations and will probably still go 7-5 and go bowling.

Eric,

Get over the wishful thinking on forfeiting a game over a small piece of tape. I’ve seen numerous kickers through a piece of grass, mud, etc. and when Saban reviewed the film of other teams he noticed at least half the other sec teams were doing the same thing and S. Carolina even did it last year.

Its a minor thing and you can’t forfeit a game because of a missed penalty call. If that were the case we would all be forever arguing over every perceived missed holding call, missed pass interference call, etc. It would be never ending.

Auburn is still having a good season despite losing a couple in a row and they should end up going bowling and their recruiting should pick up significantly. Be happy about that and forget about tapegate.

All smack talk and rivalry trash talk aside, Flowery Branch Yellow Jacket is right. We could lose at UVA this weekend just as easily as win. Based upon the trend that has developed this year, I would say we have a very good chance to break the spell that the Cavaliers have held over us the past few years.
