Georgia Tech beats Hokies in an ACC classic

We only had two misses last week but they were pretty bad ones as Georgia missed its wakeup call for the game at Tennessee and Auburn’s undefeated record came crashing down at Arkansas. So that’s 8-2 on the week and 43-17 on the season which, incredibly, has reached the halfway point.

Man that was fast.

Let’s get on with the Fearless Friday Forecast for Oct. 16.

1. Virginia Tech at Georgia Tech: Since getting thumped at Miami (33-17) on Sept. 17, Georgia Tech has done what well-coached teams do. They adjusted, executed a little better, and now they are getting ready to play one of the biggest home games in recent memory. This one comes down to the quarterbacks. If both Josh Nesbitt (Georgia Tech) and Tyrod Taylor (Virginia Tech) keep playing at their current level, this could be one for the ages. I’m giving the edge to the guy from Greene County, Mr. Nesbitt. Georgia Tech 24, Virginia Tech 21.

2. Georgia at Vanderbilt: Vandy has been a tough out for Georgia for the past few years. And the way the Bulldogs are playing now it looks like nothing is going to be easy. This looks like an ugly football game but Georgia has enough offense and the Commodores don’t throw it that well. Georgia 21, Vanderbilt 14.

3. Arkansas at Florida: Here is a stat to impress your friends this weekend. For all of its success, Florida has lost at least one game to an SEC West foe in each of the past 10 seasons. That’s right. Starting with the 1999 season, when Florida lost to Alabama twice (once at home and once in the SEC championship game), Florida has not gone a season without losing to at least one foe from the other division. Florida has already beaten LSU but has Arkansas coming to the Swamp on Saturday. The Gators win but this one is closer than a lot of people think. Florida 24, Arkansas 17.

4. South Carolina at Alabama: Alabama does a lot of things well on defense. But one of the things the Crimson Tide does particularly well is take quarterbacks out of their comfort zone. Virginia Tech’s Tyrod Taylor, Arkansas’s Ryan Mallett, and Jevan Snead of Ole Miss combined for 32 of 89 passing (35.9 percent) against the Crimson Tide defense. Stephen Garcia, it is now your turn. Alabama 24, South Carolina 7.

5. Kentucky at Auburn: Under normal circumstances this would be a pretty good game but Kentucky will be without quarterback Mike Hartline, who is out for the season with a knee injury. The Wildcats may take the redshirt off Morgan Newton, their big-time freshman recruit. Auburn bounces back nicely from a bad game at Arkansas. Auburn 31, Kentucky 14.

6. Wake Forest at Clemson: Clemson has had a week off since a brutal 24-21 loss to Maryland. The Deacons beat that same Maryland team by 10 points last week. So it is tempting to go with the Deacons here. But the Tigers have too many athletes and get a slight edge for being at home. Clemson 21, Wake Forest 20.

7. Texas vs. Oklahoma (Dallas): Oklahoma is out of the national championship race with two losses, but with win in Dallas the Sooners sure would spoil the Longhorns’ hopes of winning it all. Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford is obviously healthy again after throwing it 49 times against Baylor last week. But Bradford still has issues on his offense line. Look for Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp to exploit that. Texas 28, Oklahoma 21.

8. USC at Notre Dame: I’ve had all kinds of people tell me that Notre Dame has a shot in this game. I just don’t see it. Granted, this is not a vintage USC team but the Trojans certainly have more athletes. Also, expect Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen to see more pressure than he has all season. Notre Dame is very fortunate to be 4-1. The Irish will not get to 5-1. USC 35, Notre Dame 17.

9. Iowa at Wisconsin: Iowa has won 10 straight games against Big Ten opponents but most of those wins have not been easy. That’s why the No. 11 Hawkeyes (6-0) are pretty fragile as they go to Wisconsin (5-1). Look for an ugly, defensive game. Iowa has forced 19 turnovers this season and that gives them the edge on the road. Iowa 17, Wisconsin 14.

10. Mississippi State at Middle Tennessee: This is a dangerous game for Mississippi State. This is the first SEC team ever to travel to Floyd Stadium, so the folks in Murfreesboro will be pretty excited. The Blue Raiders have a pretty good offense, which is being run by quarterback Dwight Dasher. He is averaging 315.4 yards of total offense per game. The MTSU defense has forced 14 turnovers this season. Turning the ball over has been real problem for Mississippi. State. This one will be close. Miss. State 24, MTSU 22.

Tony – first I’m a delusional ND Alum. However, I just keep thinking about 2 things.
1. USC of 2005 > USC 2009 – ND 2009 > ND 2005, and without two fluky things happening at the end of that game (Leinart fumbling the ball out of bounds so the clock stopped and the “Bush Push”) ND wins.
2. It’s snowing in South Bend today – gametime temps in the mid 30’s tomorrow and the kid from Mater Dei (Barkley) has never, ever suited up for a game in any conditions like that – ever. Cold plays on the mind and psyche for those who aren’t accustomed.
USC 20 – ND 27.

Yes, Florida has lost at least one game a year to an SEC West team. But, our MO is to loose in the state of Mississippi. So, given that we go to Mississippi State later this year and play against the guy who knows more about our offense than anyone (Dan Mullen), I’m much more worried about this game.

My other thought is that I don’t think Alabama is going to score 24 points against SC’s defense. I think it’s going to be more like a 10-3 Alabama win.

Oklahoma, Ga. Tech, and Notre Dame win? Cinn. and Boise…give me a break.Do we even have a BCS this year. We SEC homers all know the national championship will be in the Georgia Dome in Dec. Sorry Ga. Tech – not enough time to make up ground plus the rest of your schedule due to the poor ACC (div. II????When are ya’ll going to start playing on CSS on Thursday nights like the GSC) is terrible.

Rambler,

Just consider it a sign of blogger respect. I have multiple idiots who have posted under my handle.

GT wins big
UGA wins a shootout
Florida wins but allows points
Alabama wins but it is fairly close
I kinda have a hunch that Texas is going to lay an egg Saturday
The rest are crapshoots so I’ll go clemson, Iowa ND, Auburn and MSU

We will see what removing a redshirt from a talented freshman QB in mid season looks like in the UK game. Morgan Newton might start. Aaron Murray comparison?????????????????

Georgia will beat Vanderbilt by a good margin Saturday giving fans their first opportunity to relax during a game and enjoy a win. Vanderbilt is the weakest team Georgia has played this year in what has been a tough schedule with no rest (no excuses though, still many problems with this team). The week off will be great for the dawgs although the first game back will be tough to win.

GT will lose to VT. VT has speed on defense which is required to shut down the triple option. GT defense is bad and will allow VT to score at wil.

I hope your right about my Jackets, but I do not have a good feeling about this game. If we’re going to pull off the huge upset, we will need to score more than 24 points. Our defense is just plain awful these days and the Hokies have been rolling on offense. We can’t stop the run and our pass coverage has been poor all year. Throw in a mobile quarterback like Tyrod Taylor and it could a long evening for our defense. Our offense will have to sustain some long drives, score TD’s in the redzone (No FG’s), and hold onto the football to give us a chance to win. Tough task against a Bud Foster defense. If we win, I see the score being 38-35. Go Jackets!

Here are some reasonable picks that in a way, contradict barnhart:

Va Tech beats Ga Tech. I hope for the reverse….but its not gonna happen.

Florida doesn not cover the 25 pt spread against Arkansas…but does win by more than 7.

Georgia wins big over Vandy. Georgia usually bounces back from the disaster games pretty well.

USC beats notre dame. Its not a slaughter, but its solid.

South carolina plays tough against bama….but still loses by 10 or more.

Tony, it’s good to have you back on the job, sir.

(1) Virginia Tech over Georgia Tech, 24-17. Hokie defense is the difference.

(2) Georgia over Vanderbilt, 24-10, but don’t bet on it. Even money that UGA fails to cover. This looks like a demoralized Dawgs squad. Richt needs to pull it together to save the season from becoming a complete debacle.

(3) Florida over Arkansas, 38-13. Opened up by a great running game, the Gators’ passing game gets well against the Hogs’ suspect pass defense.

(4) The Evil Genius still has some magic left, but not even Merlin could win this mismatch against the Crimson Tide. Alabama over South Carolina, 24-10.

(5) Auburn over Kentucky, 27-10. Kentucky has taken two steps back this year, while Auburn has taken at lease one step forward. (My money is on the head coach who is a Gator alumnus.)

(6) Wake Forest vs Clemson — No bet. Neither of these teams has a win over a quality opponent. Dabo Swinney may need it more. We will see.

(7) Texas over Oklahoma, 31-21. Texas has not appeared overwhelming so far, but Oklahoma looks hollowed after last spring’s graduations and NFL defections.

(8) Southern Cal over Notre Dame, 38-13, but only if Pete Carroll calls off the dogs in the 4th quarter. Notre Dame is better, but still not ready for prime time.

(9) Iowa and Wisconsin? Do they still play Division I football in the Midwest? Just kidding. Notwithstanding Iowa’s No. 11 ranking, I think this is a pick-em situation, and will not be surprised by the outcome either way.

(10) Mississippi State over Middle Tennessee, 27-21. The Bulldogs finally get another win. Tough rookie season for Bulldogs head coach (and former Gators offensive coordinator) Dan Mullen, but these hard-fought games (and close losses) should form the basis of a better team in 2010 if Mullen can recruit some more talent.

Good luck to all the teams for whom you cheer, and may the best teams win (they usually do).

Coach Richt rarely loses 3 in a season, and he’s never lost 3 in a row at Georgia. Dawgs will be focused and roll, with 3 TDs from Cox to Green… 38-17. It doesn’t always work by the book, but Miami trounced Tech and VA Tech did the same to Miami. So, it stands to reason VT beats GT, especially on national TV… 31-27. Just a hunch, but pulling for both GA Teams!

Florida is focused and driven. They want to go undefeated. There is no way they are going to let Arkansas come in and throw it on them. This might be the first really good game they’ve played all year. Everyone says trap. I don’t see it. I think Florida is all over Mallett all day.

1. Sorry Bees… VaTech is simply the better team and it doesn’t matter where the game is played, the field is 100 yards long in Atlanta just like it is in Blackburg. You guys really don’t possess much of a homefield advantage, anyway. Hokies by two touchdowns, 31-17.

2. I’m inclined to agree with Tony on this one. Historically, UGA has difficulty with Vandy, especially in Nashville (talk about ZERO homefield advantage). Luckily, the ‘Dores are pretty terrible on offense and won’t put up much resistence. Dawgs stop the skid, 28-10.

3. Again, I’m with Tony on this one. The Hawgs chuck the ball around quite effectively. Even Urban Meyer commented this week that this will likely be the best offense UF will face all season. And they are pretty sound on special teams too (just ask Auburn). We Gator fans are a little nervous about this one since this Arkansas team is better than the Ole Miss team that beat us at Florida Field last year. Here’s to hoping Meyer stays true to his word and gets more aggressive on offense (i.e. throwing the ball downfield) against a porous Hawgs defense. Gators take this one, 31-24.

4. Don’t be fooled by South Carolina’s annual first half success… the second half of the season promises to force the Ole Ball Coach to contemplate golfing in south Florida this off-season. Houston Nutt said after last week’s game that this version of Bama’s defense is ‘the best he’s ever seen.’ That’s good enough for me. Tide keeps rolling, 38-14.

5. Kentucky might have a shot in this game if it weren’t for the season ending injury to Mike Hartline. That one really hurts. Auburn is still smarting from last week’s beatdown and will put that to constructive use. War Eagle cruises, 42-17.

6. Not sure who really cares about Clemson/Wake, but what the hell, right? They’re both equal disappointments, but Clemson gets the edge in the athleticism department. This game demonstrates why people don’t like the ACC… it’s Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Miami, and then nothing but mediocrity across the board the rest of the way. Tigers please the home crowd, 24-20.

7. This game is tough for me. Texas with all its superior talent and coaching has been underwhelming thus far. Oklahoma has dropped two in the absence of Sam Bradford, but looked like they were on their way back last week, albeit against hapless Baylor. Texas didn’t get the lead back from 1-5 Colorado until the 3rd quarter last week and didn’t look all that impressive by game’s end, thus they got dropped the number 3 in favor of Bama. Hmmmm… decisions, decisions. I’m gonna go out on a limb and go with the Sooners, 27-24.

8. By a show of hands, who wants to see SC depants the Irish? Okay, I’ll mark that down as ‘all of you.’ I’m tired of all this Notre Dame BCS talk. Here’s to hoping the men of Troy put all the undeserved hype to bed in South Bend. Trojans, 31-7.

9. The Hawkeyes keep finding ways to win games. They exposed Penn State as a fraud in Happy Valley, no less, but other than that, they really haven’t been all that impressive. Wisconsin notched their first loss of the season last week in a close one at Ohio State. I say the Hawkeyes’ luck runs out in Camp Randall. Badgers, 28-21.

10. Miss. State at MTSU, Tony? Really? Anyway, Dawgs in a squeaker, 21-17.

And picking floriduh by only 7 over a pitiful weak arkansaw team???

The sec is the weakest I have ever seen it in my lifetime. One, maybe two, decent teams and a bunch of scrub teams. That is why the ACC is going to beat the sec 4 out 7 this year after beating the sec 6 out of 10 last year.

The sec talks the talk but they cannot walk the walk. Too bad sec folks that you actually have to play the games and not just talk about it.

Agreed – Anyone who knew anything about VT and their defense (and from the looks of it, not that many posters on this blog do), they would know that VT’s defense last year was MUCH better that it is this year and GT in their first year with CPJ WENT TO Blacksburg and outgained the Hokies and only lost by 3 points and beat OURSELVES with turnovers.

Most of the bloggers here picking VT to demolish GT are just degenerate UGA fans looking for something to help them feel better in the midst of their .500 season (there are some good UGA fans though, and to those fans, I apologize about the jab)

I’m affiliated with neither SEC or ACC, but the ACC took 6 out of 10 meetings from the SEC last year. The top SEC teams of FL, AL, and LSU are very good, but the rest of the conference is mediocre to very weak. UCLA over UT in Knoxville is a reminder of that, as is Army over Vanderbilt last week. VT is the best team in the ACC, but GT has a shot tomorrow night.

Tech the clear cut winner. What a moron, first when Miami beat us we had played 3 games in 13 days and Miami had been off for 10 days. When Va Tech beat Miami it was in BLACKSBURG (one of the toughest places to play in the nation) and it was coming an absolute monsoon! Anyone with any sence whatsoever could tell that was the difference in that game. The Hokies are good but there not 24 points better than the Canes. With that being said, the Canes are good but they arent 16 points better than the Jackets. Logic is crap in college football, nothing makes sence in this sport. Throw logic out the door. Quit being pissed off that UGA isnt going to win 10 games this year and stop being jealous of the Jackets success this year! VT may very well beat GT. Is the offense that did very well against MIss St. FSU and UNC going to show up? Is the defense that allowed only 7 to a very poor offense in UNC or the complete train wreck of a d against Miami, FSU and Miss. St.?

But for the idiots that keep saying the speed of VT’s defense is going to be too much for GT’s offense don’t have a clue. Miss St., FSU and UNC have as much speed as anyone.

Turnovers aside, this game will come down to COACHING!! The Paul Johnson/Bud Foster matchup vs. the Wommack/Beamerball/VT rushing attack will determine this game. GT’s offense needs as many possessions as possible for CPJ to get in a play calling groove. If VT runs the ball and limits GT’s possessions I see a VT victory. If GT can somehow stop the run, GT wins. My gut tells me GT’s offense will score 28 to 35 points. Can GT’s defense and special teams keep VT under 30? Recent history says no. But to those who also say that the GT home field advantage doesn’t mean too much are dilusional. Saturday night at Bobby Dodd will be ROCKING!! GT has always had good turnouts for Homecoming Games, even against ‘cupcakes’. The 1000 or so seats not sold are due to less travel from VT fans…..

CPJ has had this game circled since last year. CPJ and Josh AND the D find a way to win…..

Ah, m, but don’t forget that VT (your best team by far) got manhandled by Bama, score notwithstanding. In fact, let’s compare the Top 5 in each:

Bama/FLA >>> VT
Bama/FLA >>> Miami
LSU >>> GT (smoked them last year, even with scrub QBs)
Aub/Ole Miss/UGA/Tenn/USC (all about the same) >>>>> who? UNC? FSU? Wake Forest?

Seriously dude- you wanna talk scrub teams? UM, UVA, Duke, N.C. State, Clempson… Guaranteed that UK or Missy St. would handle any of ‘em. ACC whiners always seem to overlook that the SEC’s 8th or 10th best team usually ends up playing the ACC’s top two or three (see GT vs. Missy St.) Hell, look at the Peach Bowl (as it shall forever be known). The top-seeded non-BCS school from the ACC plays the FIFTH seed from the SEC. How does that matchup usually go? Now let’s reverse it and have Wake or UNC play the UF-Bama loser. HAHAHAHAHAHA

Sorry dude, ACC ball is JV.

Tony,

Did you not learn your lesson when you picked those “fearsome” miami hurricanes over VT? If our offense moves the ball at all, our defense will be fresh enough to win the the battles and the game on that side of the ball. The ONLY way GT wins this one is if they keep our offense off the field and tire out our defense.

I think Tony could be right about GT beating VT tomorrow night. A quick look at how VT with Tyrod Taylor starting at QB plays on the road away from Blacksburg reveals that they are mediocre. From the start of last season thru now, VT is 5-5 in road or neutral site games. Conversely, GT in that time is 9-1 at Bobby Dodd. To me that means it will be a tightly contested game and by no means is VT in the driver’s seat. I feel they have the tough assignment, going on the road to face the option based spread offense. Last year in Blacksburg, before this offense was competent, GT lost by a field goal and if not for a questionable personal foul call, might not have lost at all. I don’t think VT possesses the passing game of Miami or FSU, and given the way Josh Nesbitt is running this offense, VT better hope their offense doesn’t sputter for a quarter or they will lose.

Hokie – that was impressive. I think what “Not Dissappointed” was saying is that last year when, I’m sure you would agree, you had a much better defense than you do this year, GT in its infancy of the triple option on the road in blacksburg put up 387 yards of offense and had 19 first downs (as opposed to VT’s 247 yards and 17 first downs). It stands to reason that GT has a shot of putting up those same, if not better, numbers this year.

I respect VT and I think it will be a close one, but I think my boys have a good shot. Nesbitt has many flaws, but he is a WARRIOR and has improved a lot since the Miami debacle.

Sees an ugly game in Nashville and thinks that GT will beat the “other” Tech. VT usually has a good defense. No so much in ‘09. Neither stops many folks but GT should be able to score and score enough.

The ‘Dogs last trip to Nashville was also a week after their last sleepwalk through Neyland-land. It was a nailbiter at VU’s homecoming in ‘07 but they survived. Should come out angry tomorrow at noon but then…

Roll Tider is right, any of the top three in the ACC could not compete with Alabama, Florida or LSU. The top ACC team over the last 5 years (VT) has routinely gotten thrashed by SEC losing to LSU, UGA in Peach Bowl and Alabama this year. For all of you ACC homers claiming LSU is overrated think 38-3 over the last year and two BCS titles this decade. UGA is not strong this year but to say this is a one or two team league is a joke.

All of Richt’s supressed emotions and anger come out like a volcano. He yells, curses and slaps the sideline reporter. Evans suspends Richt and he disappears to a Monk Temple somewhere in India never to be seen again.

Georgia gets in a bidding war with Tx A&M for Tubberville. Ga. pays Tubberville 4m a year to become the next head coach.

What the UGA AA Needs to Know

October 16th, 2009
12:23 pm

It pains me to say it but when I see UGA play and then watch GT, the GT players have more discipline than the UGA players. For example:

1 The GT players toss the ball to the ref and run towards their bench when they score rather than celebrating like they have never been in the end zone before.

2 The GT offensive line players block their assignments and open holes. UGA linemen look confused as to whom to block.

3 The GT defensive backs stay with their assignments. UGA defensive backs were barely in the picture when UT receivers made Crompton look like Johnny Unitas.

4 The GT players stay with their units and their position coaches on the sidelines getting ready to go back into the game. I saw UGA players dancing for crowd behind the bench in one game this year.

5 The GT players seem determined to win. The UGA players look like they are playing scared and are hanging on.

6 The GT players do not make many penalties. The UGA players make stupid penalties that cost them wins.

It is all poor coaching. Coaching preparation for this season should have started with conditioning drills last February. The coaching staff needs to get the players on the same page with improved position coaching and an actual game plan for the week’s opponent.

Has success made the coaches and players at UGA lazy in their preparation and play? They sure do not appear focused enough to win. And that is on the head coach. I love him, but he needs to get their attention and if that means getting pissed off then that is what he needs to do.

The coaches are not his friends. They are his employees. The players are not his friends. They are student athletes that need to be taught the self discipline and position techniques to compete on the field.

Also, Evans needs to quit loading the schedule. The players are exhausted.

He will successful, but he will never pull together enough good players, to provide the depth, to win it all. He will win 9-10 a year, but even if you went 12-0, i doubt you get oplay. Ask ole Tommy Tubberville how it works with a 12-0 USC and 11-1 Ohio St. sitting 1 & 2. Not bashing, but forget it.

How do you explain GT’s 4 national titles? UGA’s 2 national titles?

You can’t be so myoptic. ‘USC’ wasn’t ‘USC’ when Florida State was winning and neither was UF. USC, UF, Bama, and Tex are the hot programs now, but that will not always be the case.

Tech has only beat UGA since 1956 16 times that is something to be proud of if you are a Tech fan. Tech still has not won a BCS bowl. Must less a National Champ game. If UGA played your schedule they would have 10 wins a year.

Jackets should have won when they stopped VT on 3rd down with the score 17-17 but the corrupt ACC officials called a phantom helmet-to-helmet penalty on GT, a call with which both ESPN/ABC announcers strongly disagreed. This kept VT’s drive alive & they went on to kick the game-winning FG. This year, we get revenge & defeat both the Hokies & the Infamous ACC Refs like we did with Calvin Johnson!

GT is superior to UGA……let me prove my point.

GT alltime record is 665-446-43 for a 59.6% winning percentage
UGA alltime record is 723-884-34 for a 64.7 winning percentage.

GT is dominant and UGA is so weak…We have won 3 of our last 10 bowl games. The bowls were big bowls….we got into the Chick Fil-A in 2008, but lost to LSU 38-3. We really like to play SEC schools in bowl games. In 1952 we beat Ole Miss. Thats the last time we beat a SEC school but we really don’t get many opportunities to play them in our bowls. Our last 10 bowls include the Champ Sports Bowl…Emerald…Silicon Valley….Seattle…and The Humanitarian(twice). In the 50’s we had a winning record against UGA! I almost beat them every year I played….one year we would have won but I lost count on the downs! Ask the Atlanta writers…we dominate the Dogs!

Denver Dog- We’re hit or miss this year. I believe we would have beaten North Carolina last week had the offense not spotted them 28 points off turnovers. Hatcher is a good coach, but he won’t be the one to return Ga. Southern to a national powerhouse like Erk & PJ did. On topic, I’ll take:
VT over GT by a late 4th qtr. field goal
Ky over AU by 7
Bama over SC by a lot
USC exposes ND as an overrated club
Vandy by a handful of UGA – both teams looking to bounce back, but Vandy’s last minute loss to Army motivates them more than the butt whuppin UGA got last week
OK over TX by at least 14
WI over IA by 3 – I just don’t think the Hawkeyes are that good…got lucky against PSU
MSU squeeks by MTSU
And lastly I’ll take Arkansas over Florida – Yeah its in the Swamp, and yeah its homecoming, but Florida didn’t look the great against LSU last week. And with the way Arkansas handeled Aurburn (I know Florida isn’t Auburn) I just think they will come into Gainsville with a bit more swagger. Will Arkansas put 44 on Florida’s D? No way, but if Florida runs the same dive play over and over and Arkansas stops them, they won’t have too. But then again I could be wrong and Florida rips Arkansas a new one. I mean what do I know…

Looks like the trashing talking UGA fans are back. I’m not going to predict what Tech does tomorrow, but I will say that Tech’s program is and continues on the rise. Coach Paul Johnson is a winner and anyone who doesn’t believe so is in denial. I think even if Tech goes down tomorrow, we can finish out this season a two loss team and go to a decent bowl game.

And last, I swear being in Atlanta Tech fans have to take the most crap from the SEC homers. For real, aside from Alabama and Florida, that conference is above average but no where near the glory everyone including ESPN gives them. The overall record of the SEC vs. ACC should show that at the end of year.

And oh, whatever you do don’t make ANY adjustments to cover the outside edges because they will only run it there the next 50 times. Anyway, I like most of Tony’s picks except that I like the deacs over Clemson. I also like OU over Texas due to my bias towards teams that wear crimson. Ark and South Carolina both play Fla. and Bama a lot tougher I think then people think. Dawgs vent some frustration and put a whooping on Vandy. Vandy’s offense is horrendous. They couldn’t score against a pee wee team. VT-GT and Texas-OU should be the most entertaining games of the weekend. I’m pulling for the jackets against VT. Of course LA-Tech in 99 turned out to be pretty good ball club going 9-3 with their 3 losses to USCwest, and Nebraska and FSU which at that time were still national top 5 powers. If I jinx the bama nation again they will probably ban me for life from Bama games.

I do believe I probably did in fact say the same thing about Crompton. But I would have to put that one squarely on the dawgs defensive coordinator and db coach. At halftime I was watching and thinking well UT can’t do that roll out another 10-15 times in the 2nd half cause UGA will be on to it now and make adjustments. But sure enough, much to my dismay and the consternation of countless dawg fans UT kept doing that same rollout over and over and over and for some reason the dawg def. coaching staff just didn’t seem to catch on.

I don’t want to be too critical of another team’s coaching but it really was amazing that WM made no adjustments to counteract what UT was doing.

59bulldawg,

I got to respectfully disagree with you on whether or not VT could beat Bama in a rematch. If anything I think the score would be substantially more lopsided than the first time. We rolled up 498 total yds offense to 150 for VT. That kind of statistical domination tells you that in the trenches we simply whipped em bad. Nothing would change 5 games later as far as our lineman whipping their lineman man to man.

If you go back and look the only thing that even kept that game within double digits was a series of Alabama miscues from untimely penalties, turnovers, poor special teams play, etc. The game really wasn’t very close and even when we were losing every Bama fan watching knew we would win. Why? Because its hard to stay lucky for a full 3 hours of football. Eventually the bounces of the ball even out and the more physical, more dominating team comes through. And that is what happened.

You also ignore the fact that we had the ball at the VT 15 or 20 yd line in the closing minutes and just ran dive play after dive play to run out the clock. We could have scored another 3 to 7 pts if we really had to but Saban just wanted to melt the clock and put the game on ice.

Sure, VT is playing better. But so are we. VT looks better now because they’re not playing anybody that has a defense anything near what Tyrod Taylor saw in Bama’s D. Also, our qb is demonstrably better than he was in the first half of the VT game. He was a first game starter but is a seasoned qb now. Bottom line is that if we could get a rematch with them I’ld be all for it. It would be a beatdown far more lopsided than the first beating we gave them.

Tide Rising, 1) Don’t tell them who you are at the gate. Ouch! those had the be worst games played by Bama in ages. 2) Some DC’s will adjust from series to series within a game. Sometimes actually calling a time out to make an adjustment on a third down play. Willie and our D? What’s an adjustment? The Tech game last year they burned the edges all day long in that second half. I thought the DVR player was broke showing the same damn play time after time. I didn’t get to see the UT game but from Crompton’s comment about the timing patterns I didn’t need to see his career day on TV I could visualize it.

Regardless of how this season turns out I think Richt knows it is time for a DC change. You can’t hunt for championships if you drop 1 or 2 games a year. Especially the way we drop them. Just ain’t goning to cut it.

Tech looked bored with the whole thing, slow to line up, slow to the ball, you almost wonder sometimes if a fix is not in when you see such heartless play. Then last year we got jobbed. Bad call by the ref was the difference. Bad calls happen, I’m not whining, I am just pointing out one game we loss it for ourselves and one game the ref lost it, Va. Tech has not beaten us in two years and I think we will avoid both at home with a coach that making history not retirement plans on the sideline and a team glad to be here and do something every play besides just throw their hat out there.

Sorry Dawgs, but until you can resemble looking like a team I say Vandy by 12. I mean, if we can make Crampton(yes spelling) look like a Heisman candidate, why not Vandy’s QB. You know he is excited for tomorrows game. This reminds me when I played baseball in college and at the beginning of the spring season the Northern schools would come down for their spring training. Of course we have a chance to get a defeat in this game. If you don’t go to the games they are on tv. Have you seen us play? I ask again. Have you seen a dawg team this poor in recent memory? Yes we can lose this game if we play like we have been playing.

Hey Irrelevant georgia dog nation,

Good luck in your game at Vanderbilt tomorrow at 12:21pm on Peachtree TV #2. I’m sure that the 2,000 or so non dog fans that watch it will be entertained by you and your appropriately ranked 60th in the nation program when you square off with the Commodore’s powerful 94th ranking.

I don’t even want to do the play-by-play on this blog for you this week for you lol.

Georgia Tech, on the other hand, ranked 19th nationally, will be playing in Prime Time (6:00 PM) in front of 20,000,000 viewers on “National” TV against a Virginia Tech Team that is also ranked nationally at number 5.

Good luck. Do yourself proud!

UGA over VU 28-14. Previous close games mean nothing.
UA over USC 31-14. UK ran it against SC…imagine what Ingram & Co will do.
UK over AU 38-35. Lack of D on both sides…Freshman QB is the heat.
UF over Ark 48-17. Another strafing in the swamp…speed on the edge too much for Mallet.
OU over Texas 31-24. Texas a wee bit overrated I think.
USC over ND 42-21. ND’s defense & secondary is torched repeatedly.

People had this theory that during Paul Johnson’s second season at TECH, defenses would do better against the triple option because it would be the second time that they had seen it and that it would be easy to figure out. This theory has four cases against it and two cases to support it. Of course, some of those people who said that are the same people who incorrectly believe that Johnson runs the same play every down.
I think Bud Foster is an excellent DC. Last year in Blacksburg, GT was running the ball right up the gut during the first two possessions (6 plays, 28 yards-fumble;10 plays 56 yards-field goal). For the rest of the game, Foster put two huge linemen on the shoulders of the center and succeeded in stopping Dwyer’s dives. Johnson saw the opening and Nesbitt completed a pass to Roddy Jones for a 41 yard touchdown in the second quarter. Johnson called this same play one more time and it went incomplete just beyond Roddy’s reach.
In the fourth quarter, Virginia Tech went up 17-9. Nesbitt lead a nine play, 81 yard drive in 4:30 minutes and ran the two point conversion in to tie the score. Nesbitt lead all rushers (on both teams) with 151 net yards and passed for 109 yards.
My belief is that this year, Foster will relax the middle to contain Nesbitt. Foster is great at making adjustments and he will have to after Dwyer begins to accumulate big chunks of yardage “up the gut.” When Foster tightens up the inside, the outside lanes will be opened up.
For people who really enjoy college football, this will be a really good game to watch.
I hope you Hokie fans have a good time visiting Grant Field. Let’s hope for an excellent day of college football in the South.

I really do not understand there tyranical rantings, and really do not understand why, when they are having such a good year, rather than enjoy it, they spend all there times on UGA blogs. That being said, I do not think they have a chance in heck of beating VT. I believe they can score the points, but VT is great against the run, and GT ONLY weakness is there defense. I do not believe they can put up enough points that VT will score to beat them. I HOPE THEY DO WIN, and I WILL BE ROOTING FOR THEM. GO DAWGS. GO TECH.

You all seam to ingore that this game is ON THE ROAD, which VT has not done since getting drilled by BAMA. You have to win on the road, so my argument is very solid as to why GT may, and, and propobaly will beat VT. Homefied is 90 percent of teh game in college football (unless you are Florida, LSU, Texas, or maybe USC (outside of the PAC 10). I would agree with you that our defense has pretty poor thus far, but I think you’re overestimating VT’s D. They’re not as good as they have been in the past.. And our offense was one dimensional last year in Blacksburg whereas now we’ve gotten the passing game going.

Where are all the UGA posters that were so sure VT would wipe GT out? Where are all the Hokie fans running off at the mouth? Where is Kam Chancellor, who proclaimed at ACC Media days that he knew how to stop GT’s offense?

Good morning dog nation,

Please blog with me after the BCS rankings come out this afternoon. I still have a fat head but my “buzz” is beginning to wear off and my fingers have thawed out a bit from ribbing you during your big win over Vandy from my tailgate tent on the trashless Tech campus with Two kegs and Twenty Tech fans! PRICELESS.

georgia can beat Florida in two weeks if
1. Tech says you can
2. It begins snowing very heavily during the coin toss in Jacksonville you know that Hell is in deed freezing over and YOU CAN DO THIS!!!!.
3. Florida turns the ball over 6 or more times.
4. Vince Doley, Hershal Walker and Lindale Scott are part of the officiating crew.
5. georgia adds some flexbone to their pro style-toss sweep-offense this week
6. georgia coaches watch a little film for a change.
7. georgia players stop reading what THEIR fans write about them over the next two weeks.

So here’s to you ole Queen of 316.

At georgia, you fit the mold. At Georgia Tech, we make the mold.

Dang, Tony. You are good!
Good game, Hokies.
Going to a college football game knowing that you are going to see quality coaching is a fantastic experience.

Good call on the Gator-Hog game, Tony. Just about spot on.

Arkansas is improving as a program and should challenge for the West crown in the not-too-distant future. Gators playing like a top 15 team on offense – at best – but enough defense to get by. Time to sprinkle in a little Brantley…

Otherwise, another interesting year in the works. That’s why they play the games!

Coach O….I guess the O stands for Oh for such a loudmouth you disappear each time after you predict a GT loss. Or maybe it stands for Oh I wish I was smart enough to understand a high school offense.

Love it Bro! Can’t wait on this week’s prediction of a UVA upset. But dont’ worry, I think UGAY will actually make it through next week’s bye without losing.

Its good to see those bumblebees down on N. Ave have a couple of good seasons. I have some connections to both UGA and Tech. If you fans learn from the past, you will know when your favorite team is very good and ranked high, its better to quell the boasting because you’re not gonna stay there forever.I’m an old f***t now, and it took me years to stop judgeing a university by how good the football team is. UGA and Ga. Tech are both great schools. (Depending on type of education one wants.) I know the old saying, “no one is gonna pay to watch a student take a test” No, but that student will get paid well for that great college education. Amen.
