Georgia Tech beats Hokies in an ACC classic

We only had two misses last week but they were pretty bad ones as Georgia missed its wakeup call for the game at Tennessee and Auburn’s undefeated record came crashing down at Arkansas. So that’s 8-2 on the week and 43-17 on the season which, incredibly, has reached the halfway point.

Man that was fast.

Let’s get on with the Fearless Friday Forecast for Oct. 16.

1. Virginia Tech at Georgia Tech: Since getting thumped at Miami (33-17) on Sept. 17, Georgia Tech has done what well-coached teams do. They adjusted, executed a little better, and now they are getting ready to play one of the biggest home games in recent memory. This one comes down to the quarterbacks. If both Josh Nesbitt (Georgia Tech) and Tyrod Taylor (Virginia Tech) keep playing at their current level, this could be one for the ages. I’m giving the edge to the guy from Greene County, Mr. Nesbitt. Georgia Tech 24, Virginia Tech 21.

2. Georgia at Vanderbilt: Vandy has been a tough out for Georgia for the past few years. And the way the Bulldogs are playing now it looks like nothing is going to be easy. This looks like an ugly football game but Georgia has enough offense and the Commodores don’t throw it that well. Georgia 21, Vanderbilt 14.

3. Arkansas at Florida: Here is a stat to impress your friends this weekend. For all of its success, Florida has lost at least one game to an SEC West foe in each of the past 10 seasons. That’s right. Starting with the 1999 season, when Florida lost to Alabama twice (once at home and once in the SEC championship game), Florida has not gone a season without losing to at least one foe from the other division. Florida has already beaten LSU but has Arkansas coming to the Swamp on Saturday. The Gators win but this one is closer than a lot of people think. Florida 24, Arkansas 17.

4. South Carolina at Alabama: Alabama does a lot of things well on defense. But one of the things the Crimson Tide does particularly well is take quarterbacks out of their comfort zone. Virginia Tech’s Tyrod Taylor, Arkansas’s Ryan Mallett, and Jevan Snead of Ole Miss combined for 32 of 89 passing (35.9 percent) against the Crimson Tide defense. Stephen Garcia, it is now your turn. Alabama 24, South Carolina 7.

5. Kentucky at Auburn: Under normal circumstances this would be a pretty good game but Kentucky will be without quarterback Mike Hartline, who is out for the season with a knee injury. The Wildcats may take the redshirt off Morgan Newton, their big-time freshman recruit. Auburn bounces back nicely from a bad game at Arkansas. Auburn 31, Kentucky 14.

6. Wake Forest at Clemson: Clemson has had a week off since a brutal 24-21 loss to Maryland. The Deacons beat that same Maryland team by 10 points last week. So it is tempting to go with the Deacons here. But the Tigers have too many athletes and get a slight edge for being at home. Clemson 21, Wake Forest 20.

7. Texas vs. Oklahoma (Dallas): Oklahoma is out of the national championship race with two losses, but with win in Dallas the Sooners sure would spoil the Longhorns’ hopes of winning it all. Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford is obviously healthy again after throwing it 49 times against Baylor last week. But Bradford still has issues on his offense line. Look for Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp to exploit that. Texas 28, Oklahoma 21.

8. USC at Notre Dame: I’ve had all kinds of people tell me that Notre Dame has a shot in this game. I just don’t see it. Granted, this is not a vintage USC team but the Trojans certainly have more athletes. Also, expect Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen to see more pressure than he has all season. Notre Dame is very fortunate to be 4-1. The Irish will not get to 5-1. USC 35, Notre Dame 17.

9. Iowa at Wisconsin: Iowa has won 10 straight games against Big Ten opponents but most of those wins have not been easy. That’s why the No. 11 Hawkeyes (6-0) are pretty fragile as they go to Wisconsin (5-1). Look for an ugly, defensive game. Iowa has forced 19 turnovers this season and that gives them the edge on the road. Iowa 17, Wisconsin 14.

10. Mississippi State at Middle Tennessee: This is a dangerous game for Mississippi State. This is the first SEC team ever to travel to Floyd Stadium, so the folks in Murfreesboro will be pretty excited. The Blue Raiders have a pretty good offense, which is being run by quarterback Dwight Dasher. He is averaging 315.4 yards of total offense per game. The MTSU defense has forced 14 turnovers this season. Turning the ball over has been real problem for Mississippi. State. This one will be close. Miss. State 24, MTSU 22.

I have to disagree. Belichick does it with smart, obscure, driven players and then coaches them up. I see a lot of similarities to Johnson.

How do you explain GT’s 4 national titles? UGA’s 2 national titles?

You can’t be so myoptic. ‘USC’ wasn’t ‘USC’ when Florida State was winning and neither was UF. USC, UF, Bama, and Tex are the hot programs now, but that will not always be the case.

Marcotech your are CRAZY the SEC is the best when was the last time the ACC even played for a National championship must less won one. Wow get rings for beating your state rival. Tech has only beat UGA since 1956 16 times that is something to be proud of if you are a Tech fan. Tech still has not won a BCS bowl. Must less a National Champ game. If UGA played your schedule they would have 10 wins a year.

SEC homer-dog said: “poor ACC (div. II????…” Please note:

1. ACC 6 SEC 4 in 2008 Regular Season
2. GT 3 SEC 1 in 2008-9.
3. ACC had more players drafted to NFL than any other conference 2006, 2007, & 2008
including #’1,2,3 – BC’s Matt Ryan, GT’s Calvin Johnson, & NCS’s Mario West.
4. 45-42

Jackets 35 Hokies 27. GT gained more yards in 2008 than VT 387 to 247. Jackets should have won when they stopped VT on 3rd down with the score 17-17 but the corrupt ACC officials called a phantom helmet-to-helmet penalty on GT, a call with which both ESPN/ABC announcers strongly disagreed. This kept VT’s drive alive & they went on to kick the game-winning FG. This year, we get revenge & defeat both the Hokies & the Infamous ACC Refs like we did with Calvin Johnson!

Dawgs 24 Vandy 21

I want the Dawgs to win all their games except one.

My crew is banking on home field advantage, a slight edge on offense, D making key stops and most importantly the effects of the bright city lights on those country boys from Blacksburg.. Josh and the kids pulls this one out 35-28.
The Dawgs avoid a third embarrassment by outscoring Vandy 21-17.The overrated golden domers and Charlie Weis lose the second of their 4 losses in 2009.

“3 The GT defensive backs stay with their assignments. UGA defensive backs were barely in the picture when UT receivers made Crompton look like Johnny Unitas.”

Ok, I was with you until that. You haven’t watched much of Tech on defense, have you? Watch a replay of the FSU game and see how wide open the receivers were.

Fortunately for us, Tyrod Taylor isn’t that great of a quarterback.

Not saying OU is national championship caliber, but to blithely dismiss them from the national championship because of 2 losses ignores recent history…LSU 2007… Plus there are lots of 1 loss teams already.

GT is superior to UGA……let me prove my point.

GT alltime record is 665-446-43 for a 59.6% winning percentage
UGA alltime record is 723-884-34 for a 64.7 winning percentage.

GT is dominant and UGA is so weak…We have won 3 of our last 10 bowl games. The bowls were big bowls….we got into the Chick Fil-A in 2008, but lost to LSU 38-3. We really like to play SEC schools in bowl games. In 1952 we beat Ole Miss. Thats the last time we beat a SEC school but we really don’t get many opportunities to play them in our bowls. Our last 10 bowls include the Champ Sports Bowl…Emerald…Silicon Valley….Seattle…and The Humanitarian(twice). In the 50’s we had a winning record against UGA! I almost beat them every year I played….one year we would have won but I lost count on the downs! Ask the Atlanta writers…we dominate the Dogs!

Denver Dog- We’re hit or miss this year. I believe we would have beaten North Carolina last week had the offense not spotted them 28 points off turnovers. Hatcher is a good coach, but he won’t be the one to return Ga. Southern to a national powerhouse like Erk & PJ did. On topic, I’ll take:
VT over GT by a late 4th qtr. field goal
Ky over AU by 7
Bama over SC by a lot
USC exposes ND as an overrated club
Vandy by a handful of UGA – both teams looking to bounce back, but Vandy’s last minute loss to Army motivates them more than the butt whuppin UGA got last week
OK over TX by at least 14
WI over IA by 3 – I just don’t think the Hawkeyes are that good…got lucky against PSU
MSU squeeks by MTSU
And lastly I’ll take Arkansas over Florida – Yeah its in the Swamp, and yeah its homecoming, but Florida didn’t look the great against LSU last week. And with the way Arkansas handeled Aurburn (I know Florida isn’t Auburn) I just think they will come into Gainsville with a bit more swagger. Will Arkansas put 44 on Florida’s D? No way, but if Florida runs the same dive play over and over and Arkansas stops them, they won’t have too. But then again I could be wrong and Florida rips Arkansas a new one. I mean what do I know…

Tony…. If the same Va Tech team shows up that played Boston College… your prediction is way off… and that makes you tony bolognie!

That was against BC, which by the way has a sorry team. So what, if GT shows up with the same Defense that played UNC Tech will roll. Different game different team (GT) so there’s no comparison.

Typical UGA fan….An offense puts 367 yards of offense and 19 first downs on you on your homefield and only loses by 3 points is considered “stopped” by your defense….

Willie Martinez has really screwed up your perception of defense….

Looks like the trashing talking UGA fans are back. I’m not going to predict what Tech does tomorrow, but I will say that Tech’s program is and continues on the rise. Coach Paul Johnson is a winner and anyone who doesn’t believe so is in denial. I think even if Tech goes down tomorrow, we can finish out this season a two loss team and go to a decent bowl game.

And last, I swear being in Atlanta Tech fans have to take the most crap from the SEC homers. For real, aside from Alabama and Florida, that conference is above average but no where near the glory everyone including ESPN gives them. The overall record of the SEC vs. ACC should show that at the end of year.

Go Jackets! May the only real ‘Tech’ school win!

If GT can hold VT to the 21 points Tony is allowing I would agree GT wins. Not going to happen. GT defense is not going to hold them to 21.
They will be lucky to hold them to 35.

Didn’t Alabama lose to Utah and UL-Monroe or something? Didn’t Florida lose to Ole Miss who got beat by Wake Forest? We could play this game all day, bottomline, there is a lot of parity in college football now and there is no such thing as an upset anymore. The SEC isn’t as far ahead of the other conferences as they think they are.

I see UGA bouncing back big and taking care o’ bidness, say 38-17.
I want to say GT of course, but I think it is a “pick’em” game. I will probably go thru two packs
of cigs and I don’t even smoke.
Bama takes care of USC East because of their D, but the Tenn/Bama game may be better than originally expected. I can’t stand Notre Dame so even if I thought they would win I would never say it.
If they played Bin-Laden’s All-Stars I might have to think about pulling for them.
I am a Longhorn fan, too. But I get a bad feeling this is where Oklahoma rescues their season.

1st Half: FSU:35 GT:28
2nd Half: FSU:9 GT:21

Maybe the GT-D has found their “groove.”

GT-O is DOMINATING on 3rd & 4th downs.

The D that stops the other’s run game will win.

Bud Foster is good, but CPJ has seen more than a few D-schemes in his 25+ yrs running this offense. Expect CPJ to use a few new things VT will not have seen yet.

I just dont think there are enough VT defenders to chase EVERY GT-O option on every play.

So, GT:33 VT:26

johnny, funny link. Bud went to Athens to gather information? First off, Willie probably told Bud not to take a nap at halftime. Then he told him not to take the third quarter off (it actually counts). And oh, whatever you do don’t make ANY adjustments to cover the outside edges because they will only run it there the next 50 times. And make sure you stay in a soft cover zone D because they might throw the ball after they get so damn tired of running for 400+ yards. Then he ask him if he would buy lunch.

The biggest game in the ACC this year will be Saturady at Bobby Dodd and all we get thois week from UGA-homer Tony is one stinking paragraph. One paragraph all week. I must be the only one on here who likes Rogerdawg. He reminds me of Roswell Ed only a little more mean spirited. But it cracks me up every time I see him trading insults and saying “shut up” and all that. He’s like a kid who has found a new platform for smack talk. I know I’ll probably get a return rant from him telling me to shut the hell up or some other juvenile insult but you got to take people like Rogerdawg in stride and look at him more as an oddity or source of humor instead of being mad at him.

Anyway, I like most of Tony’s picks except that I like the deacs over Clemson. I also like OU over Texas due to my bias towards teams that wear crimson. Ark and South Carolina both play Fla. and Bama a lot tougher I think then people think. Dawgs vent some frustration and put a whooping on Vandy. Vandy’s offense is horrendous. They couldn’t score against a pee wee team. VT-GT and Texas-OU should be the most entertaining games of the weekend. I’m pulling for the jackets against VT. Having played VT I think they can be ran on between the tackles as we proved.

Good to see you back Tony after your brief hiatus.

Sorry if I jinxed you regarding the Vandy game.

If it makes you feel any better I’m going to the Bama-South Carolina game. The last Bama game I went to? You guessed it. La-Monroe and we all know what happened there. And what’s one of the last Bama games I went to before that? You guessed it. The infamous La-Tech game in 99.

Of course LA-Tech in 99 turned out to be pretty good ball club going 9-3 with their 3 losses to USCwest, and Nebraska and FSU which at that time were still national top 5 powers. If I jinx the bama nation again they will probably ban me for life from Bama games.

I do believe I probably did in fact say the same thing about Crompton. But I would have to put that one squarely on the dawgs defensive coordinator and db coach. At halftime I was watching and thinking well UT can’t do that roll out another 10-15 times in the 2nd half cause UGA will be on to it now and make adjustments. But sure enough, much to my dismay and the consternation of countless dawg fans UT kept doing that same rollout over and over and over and for some reason the dawg def. coaching staff just didn’t seem to catch on.

I don’t want to be too critical of another team’s coaching but it really was amazing that WM made no adjustments to counteract what UT was doing.

Besides the Dawgs and Steelers, I probably watch more VT football than any other team. Beamer has a beast in Blacksburg and it’s getting better each week. If the VT-Bama game were played now, I’m not sure Bama would win. I certainly don’t see GT holding them to 21 points much less beating them on Saturday. Still this is the best GT team in a long while . . . and anything could happen. Hokies 38-24.
