Georgia Tech beats Hokies in an ACC classic

We only had two misses last week but they were pretty bad ones as Georgia missed its wakeup call for the game at Tennessee and Auburn’s undefeated record came crashing down at Arkansas. So that’s 8-2 on the week and 43-17 on the season which, incredibly, has reached the halfway point.

Man that was fast.

Let’s get on with the Fearless Friday Forecast for Oct. 16.

1. Virginia Tech at Georgia Tech: Since getting thumped at Miami (33-17) on Sept. 17, Georgia Tech has done what well-coached teams do. They adjusted, executed a little better, and now they are getting ready to play one of the biggest home games in recent memory. This one comes down to the quarterbacks. If both Josh Nesbitt (Georgia Tech) and Tyrod Taylor (Virginia Tech) keep playing at their current level, this could be one for the ages. I’m giving the edge to the guy from Greene County, Mr. Nesbitt. Georgia Tech 24, Virginia Tech 21.

2. Georgia at Vanderbilt: Vandy has been a tough out for Georgia for the past few years. And the way the Bulldogs are playing now it looks like nothing is going to be easy. This looks like an ugly football game but Georgia has enough offense and the Commodores don’t throw it that well. Georgia 21, Vanderbilt 14.

3. Arkansas at Florida: Here is a stat to impress your friends this weekend. For all of its success, Florida has lost at least one game to an SEC West foe in each of the past 10 seasons. That’s right. Starting with the 1999 season, when Florida lost to Alabama twice (once at home and once in the SEC championship game), Florida has not gone a season without losing to at least one foe from the other division. Florida has already beaten LSU but has Arkansas coming to the Swamp on Saturday. The Gators win but this one is closer than a lot of people think. Florida 24, Arkansas 17.

4. South Carolina at Alabama: Alabama does a lot of things well on defense. But one of the things the Crimson Tide does particularly well is take quarterbacks out of their comfort zone. Virginia Tech’s Tyrod Taylor, Arkansas’s Ryan Mallett, and Jevan Snead of Ole Miss combined for 32 of 89 passing (35.9 percent) against the Crimson Tide defense. Stephen Garcia, it is now your turn. Alabama 24, South Carolina 7.

5. Kentucky at Auburn: Under normal circumstances this would be a pretty good game but Kentucky will be without quarterback Mike Hartline, who is out for the season with a knee injury. The Wildcats may take the redshirt off Morgan Newton, their big-time freshman recruit. Auburn bounces back nicely from a bad game at Arkansas. Auburn 31, Kentucky 14.

6. Wake Forest at Clemson: Clemson has had a week off since a brutal 24-21 loss to Maryland. The Deacons beat that same Maryland team by 10 points last week. So it is tempting to go with the Deacons here. But the Tigers have too many athletes and get a slight edge for being at home. Clemson 21, Wake Forest 20.

7. Texas vs. Oklahoma (Dallas): Oklahoma is out of the national championship race with two losses, but with win in Dallas the Sooners sure would spoil the Longhorns’ hopes of winning it all. Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford is obviously healthy again after throwing it 49 times against Baylor last week. But Bradford still has issues on his offense line. Look for Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp to exploit that. Texas 28, Oklahoma 21.

8. USC at Notre Dame: I’ve had all kinds of people tell me that Notre Dame has a shot in this game. I just don’t see it. Granted, this is not a vintage USC team but the Trojans certainly have more athletes. Also, expect Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen to see more pressure than he has all season. Notre Dame is very fortunate to be 4-1. The Irish will not get to 5-1. USC 35, Notre Dame 17.

9. Iowa at Wisconsin: Iowa has won 10 straight games against Big Ten opponents but most of those wins have not been easy. That’s why the No. 11 Hawkeyes (6-0) are pretty fragile as they go to Wisconsin (5-1). Look for an ugly, defensive game. Iowa has forced 19 turnovers this season and that gives them the edge on the road. Iowa 17, Wisconsin 14.

10. Mississippi State at Middle Tennessee: This is a dangerous game for Mississippi State. This is the first SEC team ever to travel to Floyd Stadium, so the folks in Murfreesboro will be pretty excited. The Blue Raiders have a pretty good offense, which is being run by quarterback Dwight Dasher. He is averaging 315.4 yards of total offense per game. The MTSU defense has forced 14 turnovers this season. Turning the ball over has been real problem for Mississippi. State. This one will be close. Miss. State 24, MTSU 22.

Tony – first I’m a delusional ND Alum. However, I just keep thinking about 2 things.
1. USC of 2005 > USC 2009 – ND 2009 > ND 2005, and without two fluky things happening at the end of that game (Leinart fumbling the ball out of bounds so the clock stopped and the “Bush Push”) ND wins.
2. It’s snowing in South Bend today – gametime temps in the mid 30’s tomorrow and the kid from Mater Dei (Barkley) has never, ever suited up for a game in any conditions like that – ever. Cold plays on the mind and psyche for those who aren’t accustomed.
USC 20 – ND 27.

Yes, Florida has lost at least one game a year to an SEC West team. But, our MO is to loose in the state of Mississippi. So, given that we go to Mississippi State later this year and play against the guy who knows more about our offense than anyone (Dan Mullen), I’m much more worried about this game.

My other thought is that I don’t think Alabama is going to score 24 points against SC’s defense. I think it’s going to be more like a 10-3 Alabama win.

Oklahoma, Ga. Tech, and Notre Dame win? Cinn. and Boise…give me a break.Do we even have a BCS this year. We SEC homers all know the national championship will be in the Georgia Dome in Dec. Sorry Ga. Tech – not enough time to make up ground plus the rest of your schedule due to the poor ACC (div. II????When are ya’ll going to start playing on CSS on Thursday nights like the GSC) is terrible.

Rambler,

Just consider it a sign of blogger respect. I have multiple idiots who have posted under my handle.

GT wins big
UGA wins a shootout
Florida wins but allows points
Alabama wins but it is fairly close
I kinda have a hunch that Texas is going to lay an egg Saturday
The rest are crapshoots so I’ll go clemson, Iowa ND, Auburn and MSU

We will see what removing a redshirt from a talented freshman QB in mid season looks like in the UK game. Morgan Newton might start. Aaron Murray comparison?????????????????

Georgia will beat Vanderbilt by a good margin Saturday giving fans their first opportunity to relax during a game and enjoy a win. Vanderbilt is the weakest team Georgia has played this year in what has been a tough schedule with no rest (no excuses though, still many problems with this team). The week off will be great for the dawgs although the first game back will be tough to win.

GT will lose to VT. VT has speed on defense which is required to shut down the triple option. GT defense is bad and will allow VT to score at wil.

I hope your right about my Jackets, but I do not have a good feeling about this game. If we’re going to pull off the huge upset, we will need to score more than 24 points. Our defense is just plain awful these days and the Hokies have been rolling on offense. We can’t stop the run and our pass coverage has been poor all year. Throw in a mobile quarterback like Tyrod Taylor and it could a long evening for our defense. Our offense will have to sustain some long drives, score TD’s in the redzone (No FG’s), and hold onto the football to give us a chance to win. Tough task against a Bud Foster defense. If we win, I see the score being 38-35. Go Jackets!

Here are some reasonable picks that in a way, contradict barnhart:

Va Tech beats Ga Tech. I hope for the reverse….but its not gonna happen.

Florida doesn not cover the 25 pt spread against Arkansas…but does win by more than 7.

Georgia wins big over Vandy. Georgia usually bounces back from the disaster games pretty well.

USC beats notre dame. Its not a slaughter, but its solid.

South carolina plays tough against bama….but still loses by 10 or more.

Tony, it’s good to have you back on the job, sir.

(1) Virginia Tech over Georgia Tech, 24-17. Hokie defense is the difference.

(2) Georgia over Vanderbilt, 24-10, but don’t bet on it. Even money that UGA fails to cover. This looks like a demoralized Dawgs squad. Richt needs to pull it together to save the season from becoming a complete debacle.

(3) Florida over Arkansas, 38-13. Opened up by a great running game, the Gators’ passing game gets well against the Hogs’ suspect pass defense.

(4) The Evil Genius still has some magic left, but not even Merlin could win this mismatch against the Crimson Tide. Alabama over South Carolina, 24-10.

(5) Auburn over Kentucky, 27-10. Kentucky has taken two steps back this year, while Auburn has taken at lease one step forward. (My money is on the head coach who is a Gator alumnus.)

(6) Wake Forest vs Clemson — No bet. Neither of these teams has a win over a quality opponent. Dabo Swinney may need it more. We will see.

(7) Texas over Oklahoma, 31-21. Texas has not appeared overwhelming so far, but Oklahoma looks hollowed after last spring’s graduations and NFL defections.

(8) Southern Cal over Notre Dame, 38-13, but only if Pete Carroll calls off the dogs in the 4th quarter. Notre Dame is better, but still not ready for prime time.

(9) Iowa and Wisconsin? Do they still play Division I football in the Midwest? Just kidding. Notwithstanding Iowa’s No. 11 ranking, I think this is a pick-em situation, and will not be surprised by the outcome either way.

(10) Mississippi State over Middle Tennessee, 27-21. The Bulldogs finally get another win. Tough rookie season for Bulldogs head coach (and former Gators offensive coordinator) Dan Mullen, but these hard-fought games (and close losses) should form the basis of a better team in 2010 if Mullen can recruit some more talent.

Good luck to all the teams for whom you cheer, and may the best teams win (they usually do).

Coach Richt rarely loses 3 in a season, and he’s never lost 3 in a row at Georgia. Dawgs will be focused and roll, with 3 TDs from Cox to Green… 38-17. It doesn’t always work by the book, but Miami trounced Tech and VA Tech did the same to Miami. So, it stands to reason VT beats GT, especially on national TV… 31-27. Just a hunch, but pulling for both GA Teams!

Florida is focused and driven. They want to go undefeated. There is no way they are going to let Arkansas come in and throw it on them. This might be the first really good game they’ve played all year. Everyone says trap. I don’t see it. I think Florida is all over Mallett all day.

1. Sorry Bees… VaTech is simply the better team and it doesn’t matter where the game is played, the field is 100 yards long in Atlanta just like it is in Blackburg. You guys really don’t possess much of a homefield advantage, anyway. Hokies by two touchdowns, 31-17.

2. I’m inclined to agree with Tony on this one. Historically, UGA has difficulty with Vandy, especially in Nashville (talk about ZERO homefield advantage). Luckily, the ‘Dores are pretty terrible on offense and won’t put up much resistence. Dawgs stop the skid, 28-10.

3. Again, I’m with Tony on this one. The Hawgs chuck the ball around quite effectively. Even Urban Meyer commented this week that this will likely be the best offense UF will face all season. And they are pretty sound on special teams too (just ask Auburn). We Gator fans are a little nervous about this one since this Arkansas team is better than the Ole Miss team that beat us at Florida Field last year. Here’s to hoping Meyer stays true to his word and gets more aggressive on offense (i.e. throwing the ball downfield) against a porous Hawgs defense. Gators take this one, 31-24.

4. Don’t be fooled by South Carolina’s annual first half success… the second half of the season promises to force the Ole Ball Coach to contemplate golfing in south Florida this off-season. Houston Nutt said after last week’s game that this version of Bama’s defense is ‘the best he’s ever seen.’ That’s good enough for me. Tide keeps rolling, 38-14.

5. Kentucky might have a shot in this game if it weren’t for the season ending injury to Mike Hartline. That one really hurts. Auburn is still smarting from last week’s beatdown and will put that to constructive use. War Eagle cruises, 42-17.

6. Not sure who really cares about Clemson/Wake, but what the hell, right? They’re both equal disappointments, but Clemson gets the edge in the athleticism department. This game demonstrates why people don’t like the ACC… it’s Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Miami, and then nothing but mediocrity across the board the rest of the way. Tigers please the home crowd, 24-20.

7. This game is tough for me. Texas with all its superior talent and coaching has been underwhelming thus far. Oklahoma has dropped two in the absence of Sam Bradford, but looked like they were on their way back last week, albeit against hapless Baylor. Texas didn’t get the lead back from 1-5 Colorado until the 3rd quarter last week and didn’t look all that impressive by game’s end, thus they got dropped the number 3 in favor of Bama. Hmmmm… decisions, decisions. I’m gonna go out on a limb and go with the Sooners, 27-24.

8. By a show of hands, who wants to see SC depants the Irish? Okay, I’ll mark that down as ‘all of you.’ I’m tired of all this Notre Dame BCS talk. Here’s to hoping the men of Troy put all the undeserved hype to bed in South Bend. Trojans, 31-7.

9. The Hawkeyes keep finding ways to win games. They exposed Penn State as a fraud in Happy Valley, no less, but other than that, they really haven’t been all that impressive. Wisconsin notched their first loss of the season last week in a close one at Ohio State. I say the Hawkeyes’ luck runs out in Camp Randall. Badgers, 28-21.

10. Miss. State at MTSU, Tony? Really? Anyway, Dawgs in a squeaker, 21-17.

And picking floriduh by only 7 over a pitiful weak arkansaw team???

The sec is the weakest I have ever seen it in my lifetime. One, maybe two, decent teams and a bunch of scrub teams. That is why the ACC is going to beat the sec 4 out 7 this year after beating the sec 6 out of 10 last year.

The sec talks the talk but they cannot walk the walk. Too bad sec folks that you actually have to play the games and not just talk about it.

Agreed – Anyone who knew anything about VT and their defense (and from the looks of it, not that many posters on this blog do), they would know that VT’s defense last year was MUCH better that it is this year and GT in their first year with CPJ WENT TO Blacksburg and outgained the Hokies and only lost by 3 points and beat OURSELVES with turnovers.

Most of the bloggers here picking VT to demolish GT are just degenerate UGA fans looking for something to help them feel better in the midst of their .500 season (there are some good UGA fans though, and to those fans, I apologize about the jab)

I’m affiliated with neither SEC or ACC, but the ACC took 6 out of 10 meetings from the SEC last year. The top SEC teams of FL, AL, and LSU are very good, but the rest of the conference is mediocre to very weak. UCLA over UT in Knoxville is a reminder of that, as is Army over Vanderbilt last week. VT is the best team in the ACC, but GT has a shot tomorrow night.

Tech the clear cut winner. What a moron, first when Miami beat us we had played 3 games in 13 days and Miami had been off for 10 days. When Va Tech beat Miami it was in BLACKSBURG (one of the toughest places to play in the nation) and it was coming an absolute monsoon! Anyone with any sence whatsoever could tell that was the difference in that game. The Hokies are good but there not 24 points better than the Canes. With that being said, the Canes are good but they arent 16 points better than the Jackets. Logic is crap in college football, nothing makes sence in this sport. Throw logic out the door. Quit being pissed off that UGA isnt going to win 10 games this year and stop being jealous of the Jackets success this year! VT may very well beat GT. Is the offense that did very well against MIss St. FSU and UNC going to show up? Is the defense that allowed only 7 to a very poor offense in UNC or the complete train wreck of a d against Miami, FSU and Miss. St.?

But for the idiots that keep saying the speed of VT’s defense is going to be too much for GT’s offense don’t have a clue. Miss St., FSU and UNC have as much speed as anyone.

Turnovers aside, this game will come down to COACHING!! The Paul Johnson/Bud Foster matchup vs. the Wommack/Beamerball/VT rushing attack will determine this game. GT’s offense needs as many possessions as possible for CPJ to get in a play calling groove. If VT runs the ball and limits GT’s possessions I see a VT victory. If GT can somehow stop the run, GT wins. My gut tells me GT’s offense will score 28 to 35 points. Can GT’s defense and special teams keep VT under 30? Recent history says no. But to those who also say that the GT home field advantage doesn’t mean too much are dilusional. Saturday night at Bobby Dodd will be ROCKING!! GT has always had good turnouts for Homecoming Games, even against ‘cupcakes’. The 1000 or so seats not sold are due to less travel from VT fans…..

CPJ has had this game circled since last year. CPJ and Josh AND the D find a way to win…..

GSU was talking about the regular season. The ACC did in fact go 6-4 against the SEC last year, with two of those losses being handed out by the eventual BCS champs.

It took two bowl games for the SEC to pull to .500 against the ACC

Ah, m, but don’t forget that VT (your best team by far) got manhandled by Bama, score notwithstanding. In fact, let’s compare the Top 5 in each:

Bama/FLA >>> VT
Bama/FLA >>> Miami
LSU >>> GT (smoked them last year, even with scrub QBs)
Aub/Ole Miss/UGA/Tenn/USC (all about the same) >>>>> who? UNC? FSU? Wake Forest?

Seriously dude- you wanna talk scrub teams? UM, UVA, Duke, N.C. State, Clempson… Guaranteed that UK or Missy St. would handle any of ‘em. ACC whiners always seem to overlook that the SEC’s 8th or 10th best team usually ends up playing the ACC’s top two or three (see GT vs. Missy St.) Hell, look at the Peach Bowl (as it shall forever be known). The top-seeded non-BCS school from the ACC plays the FIFTH seed from the SEC. How does that matchup usually go? Now let’s reverse it and have Wake or UNC play the UF-Bama loser. HAHAHAHAHAHA

Sorry dude, ACC ball is JV.

The only game our first string defense has played in the second half was against LSU and they didn’t even get the ball on our side of the 50 the entire second half.

Tony,

Did you not learn your lesson when you picked those “fearsome” miami hurricanes over VT? If our offense moves the ball at all, our defense will be fresh enough to win the the battles and the game on that side of the ball. The ONLY way GT wins this one is if they keep our offense off the field and tire out our defense.

I think Tony could be right about GT beating VT tomorrow night. A quick look at how VT with Tyrod Taylor starting at QB plays on the road away from Blacksburg reveals that they are mediocre. From the start of last season thru now, VT is 5-5 in road or neutral site games. Conversely, GT in that time is 9-1 at Bobby Dodd. To me that means it will be a tightly contested game and by no means is VT in the driver’s seat. I feel they have the tough assignment, going on the road to face the option based spread offense. Last year in Blacksburg, before this offense was competent, GT lost by a field goal and if not for a questionable personal foul call, might not have lost at all. I don’t think VT possesses the passing game of Miami or FSU, and given the way Josh Nesbitt is running this offense, VT better hope their offense doesn’t sputter for a quarter or they will lose.

Glad to see so many people picking against GT this week. I was worried last week when everyone was picking GT over FSU. The team will be focused. It will be a good one.

If Tech gets the win, PJ will have to start running up the score in these games to get some poll respect in case of a tie with Miami.

UGA loses this one and I feel more sorry for them than I already do…really.
I hope ND wins so they don’t start sniffing around CPJ.

“Very fortunate to be 4-1.”

Interesting.

Take a SEC team with the same win/loss category and it changes to “good teams find a way to win.”

Moreover, what is a “vintage” U$C team? The one that Notre Dame owned for 13 games straight? Or the “what-have-you-done-for-me-Petey-cool-Carrol” teams?

Thanks again, “Mr. College Football”. Perhaps you should change the television from 46 all the time. They show other colleges playing on Saturday as well.

Iowa- hope the luck doesn’t run out

Fleischmann in Chattanooga (do you like the margarine or cream cheese?),

I’m assuming by your Kiffin “boast” or jab that you like UT? Can’t base that assumption on your being in Chattanooga because that town isn’t exactly Big Orange Country…at any rate, it takes more than one game to “own” someone.

Oh and at 3-3 UGA is indeed irrelevant; however UT was irrelevant even before game one. They remain irrelevant.

Hokie – that was impressive. I think what “Not Dissappointed” was saying is that last year when, I’m sure you would agree, you had a much better defense than you do this year, GT in its infancy of the triple option on the road in blacksburg put up 387 yards of offense and had 19 first downs (as opposed to VT’s 247 yards and 17 first downs). It stands to reason that GT has a shot of putting up those same, if not better, numbers this year.

I respect VT and I think it will be a close one, but I think my boys have a good shot. Nesbitt has many flaws, but he is a WARRIOR and has improved a lot since the Miami debacle.

Does it matter? Didn’t you say the SEC was better than the ACC?
What you should’ve said was Bama and UF are better than any team in the ACC because that is a fact, but the SEC as a whole is not. I wouldn’t expect a homer like you to get that though.

May Utah would have, maybe the wouldn’t, but one thing is for sure, they sure whipped your butt stallion

Sees an ugly game in Nashville and thinks that GT will beat the “other” Tech. VT usually has a good defense. No so much in ‘09. Neither stops many folks but GT should be able to score and score enough.

The ‘Dogs last trip to Nashville was also a week after their last sleepwalk through Neyland-land. It was a nailbiter at VU’s homecoming in ‘07 but they survived. Should come out angry tomorrow at noon but then…

I don’t see SC pulling off an upset vs ‘Bama. I think Arkie will score more than some think but they cannot stop anyone.

GT and VT has the makings of the o/u at about 72. Watch it be a 13-10 affair…
UGA should rebound taking their second trip to the state of Tennessee this weekend. The only thing is Vandy, for some reason, tends to play UGA pretty good but I think the Heave and Catch offensive scheme gets back on track in Smashville…
Alabama and USC East are the Volunteers next two opponents. I’ll watch this one if at all possible…
Florida DB’s will be put to work this weekend. UF may camp a safety deep just to watch over things. UF will sack Razorpig’s QB 5 times…
USC-Hunchbacks : Weiss has taken CPF’s place at the All U Can Eat Donut Bar. Another round of creme filled on the house. Does there have to be a winner here..?
Auburn’s gimmal O took a step back last week. Hard to defend this type of Ruskie fire drill. Keeping them off the field is one way. Outscoring them is another. Can’t see Kentucky hanging with ‘em…
Good luck to all and may all go home injury free…GBO
