Will SEC championship also be the national championship?

Here’s a simple question for you to ponder this morning: Florida and Alabama are ranked 1-2 in the Associated Press media poll. Based on what you have seen thus far, if Florida and Alabama both run the table, will the SEC championship game ALSO be the national championship game as well?

We know that technically it won’t be because the SEC champ will have to play somebody in Pasadena in January to get the crystal football. But if Florida and Alabama are both 12-0 on Dec. 5, will that decide the national championship in your mind?

Here is the final question: Knowing the history of the SEC, it is crazy to even suggest that both of these teams can run the table between now and then? Here are the schedules. You decide:

FLORIDA

Oct. 17– vs. Arkansas. Hogs have a great offense with Ryan Mallett.

Oct.  24—at Miss. State. Urban Meyer and Tebow vs. Dan Mullen, their old OC

Oct. 31—vs. Georgia in Jacksonville. Don’t see much of a threat from Dawgs.

Nov. 7—vs. Vanderbilt. Vandy is really struggling now

Nov. 14—at South Carolina.  Gamecocks have a very good defense. They could make it interesting.

Nov. 21—FIU. Please.

Nov. 28—Florida State. This will be Tebow’s last home game. It could also be Bobby Bowden’s last game as the Florida State head coach.

ALABAMA

Oct. 17—South Carolina. Bama defense should bottle up South Carolina offense.

Oct. 24—Tennessee. Vols aren’t as good as they looked against Georgia.

Nov. 7—LSU. Tigers have no offensive identity.

Nov. 14—at Miss. State. Undermanned in Dan Mullen’s first year.

Nov. 21—Chattanooga. Tuneup for Auburn.

Nov. 27 (Friday)—at Auburn. It’s at Jordan-Hare, so it could be interesting.

It happens in every sport, but the two best teams don’t always play in the final matchup of the season. So yes, the Florida-Alabama game could be the real national championship. How many times in the NFL is the AFC or NFC championship more competitive than the Super Bowl, or the ALCS or NLCS in baseball. It happens a lot in sports, it’s even happened in college football. Those classic matchups of Florida-Florida State in the 90’s, or Florida-Tennessee were like that.

Texas hasn’t gotten to the meat of their schedule yet, they still have ranked teams on their schedule they haven’t gotten to yet. Oklahoma this week, Missouri the week after, Oklahoma State and Kansas after that, then a likely matchup with a possible top 10 Nebraska in the Big 12 championship game. They won’t play as good a team as Florida or Alabama, but the rest of their schedule is as strong as Florida and Alabama’s.

Well you’ve got to get to the SEC champ game first to have a chance to win the NC.Let’s take it one game at a time.Having said that the Gators just don’t look as strong offensively as they were last year. They seem to be missing something on offense.Bama’s offense on the other hand looks better this year than last years offense eventhough they are not as much of a power run offense, it seems to be a more balanced offense with passing and running.Greg McElroy has really stepped up and surprised alot of people despite his lack of starting experiance coming into the season. He has really played well and can throw the deep ball better than JPW could.Remember McElroy in the pre-season finised in 2nd place at the Manning QB camp beating out Sam Bradford,Colt McCoy,Jevan Sneed, etc and really turned alot of heads from the NFL scouts that were on hand. They were asking Who is this Greg McElroy? So far he has played well.I still think both Alabama and Florida have a chance to win their remaining games though. They just have to avoid having a let-down game where they don’t bring their A-game and slip.It is hard to go undefeated in the SEC.Right now it looks like it is going to Bama and Florida in a rematch for the SEC championship.

North FLA –

Sorry to break the news to you, but Florida is still a young team. Tebow is replaced by a better passer, and most other defenders are sophomores or juniors. Not very many seniors on today’s squad and not too many will go pro early.

As for schedule – its lighter than it usually is for Florida. Consider last year’s first 3 games: Miami / Hawaii / Tennessee. Then FSU as the finale. I agree that FIU is a joke. Would just as soon make that an idle week.

But don’t forget – no one was complaining about our schedule when the Nolies could field a team. That’s a home and away that is going nowhere…

The championship games are the closest thing the NCAA has to a playoff system. Whoever wins the SEC Championship will have an opportunity to play in the National Championship game and whoever loses it will have proven that they were not deserving to win the National Championship. I just look forward to the Longhorns winning it all. Hook ‘Em!!!

No one has even challenged the Gators defense this year, and the Gators have had zero need to open up their offense as a result. Meyer just wants to win games. That is all the Gators have to do…win the game. He will open it up more offensively this Saturday and the Gators D will “pick” 3 to 5 passes (one for a TD)vs. Arkansas. Tebow will also throw 3 or 4 TD passes. Florida 45, Arkansas 10 (maybe). If I had a vote, I would vote Bama number one right now. Their defense is currently a little better right now, and that is something to say because the Gators D is NFL like.

Tide4u2c

Tampa Gator,

Come on man are you trying to imply Urban Meyer is holding back some offensively? I mean he loves to run up the score while Saban backs off with a big lead and brings back-ups in to play and runs the clock out. That is really hard to believe Urban Meyer is holding back offensively. Now as far as defense both Bama and Florida’s look great, statistically Florida’s defense might be better but I think Bama’s is more physical. And both have NFL style defenses.Anyway I think until somebody beats Florida they should remain ranked #1 but I think Bama has the better resume so far to be ranked #1. 1 or 2 it will be decided on the field and I can’t wait.

I don’t think that Tony implied that there would be a re-match in the BCS game in the event that Bama and Florida meet undefeated in the SECCG. Some on here seem to have the impression that he did.

Even if they did come into the SEC game with flawless records, and even if the game went to five overtimes and was won by three points, the loser would drop to third or fourth place. The computers wouldn’t do this, but the human voters would.

Still, the point being made is that Alabama and Florida have been the most impressive football teams in the nation so far this season. If the Georgia Dome hosts two undefeated teams, then the game in Pasadena will pale in comparison to that game. Everyone knows that, whether they like it or not. That’s why Tony and so many others are writing about it.

I just hope that the players at the Capstone don’t let all of this fan noise affect their attitudes. The most important game of the season happens next Saturday. The next game is always the most important game.

Florida and Alabama are like two trains going down the tracks and the station is the dome in Atlanta. This will be agood game and i think Alabama has a chip on there shoulders from last year and a much improved team. One of these teams will end up in the big dance and i think Texas or USC will be the other team, just a guess. Of course there is a lot of football left and crazy things can happen between now and then.

Last year game was basically the National Championship game. Florida and Alabama were #1 & #2 in the country when they meet last year. The Difference is most experts Think Alabama can beat Florida this year where last year Alabama was a 10 Point underdog even thou they were the #1 Team in the Country.

Gotta disagree with some of you guys. I think the gator offense still is that good. They lead the nation in rushing. That says something.

If LSU held them to 13 that’s more a credit to LSUs defense than anything else. They also have the nation’s no. 1 D statistically. I give Fla the edge as being no. 1 until someone beats them. Can’t claim we’re even with them or better than them unless we do beat em.

Its like the saying goes ” In order to be the man you gotta beat the man”. And for now UF is the man until someone beats em.

Can’t have a letdown against these guys. And with all this talk about maybe us being no. 1 and not Florida its exactly what I don’t want to hear. Auburn is not going to be as hard as what everyone is thinking. Last week there “ace” linebacker started choking one of the assistant coaches and basically got into a fight with one of them and for that was kicked off the team. That was one reason for only having four scholorship backers on the Arkansas trip.

Tide Rising,

Bama has earned the right to be ranked where they are.To not honor it would be ashame. You say you don’t like the talk about Bama being ranked #1 yet Bama earned it and besides we are fans and it has no bearing on the team what I say or you say.I am tired of all of the bias against Alabama.

I mean sure Bama is getting alittle respect now but they had to earn it and they have. Before the season all we heard about was about how good Ole Miss and LSU were going to be and they were ranked higher than Bama going ino the season. It is about time some people start eating crow for overlooking the great 12 game winning season Bama had last year and the fact that Bama was about 10 minutes away from beating Florida.

This team has had to earn every bit of respect they might have now but its been along time coming.

IF uat (the biggest serial cheaters in college football history) survive the season undefeated they will be out classed by the uf’ers. The tiders offense is so ho hum they don’t have the complexity or the savvy to stay with uf. Look for a so so much-a-do about nothing type of game. Then when their NEXT letter from the NCAA hits home saybear (the coach in waiting for ND) will fly away with most of his recruits and the dashed hope and hearts of uat fans will litter the denny chime landscape…Da Chikins Don Come Home Ta Roost!

Tide Rising,

It’s true that Florida has impressive stats on both offense and defense. That said, their schedule this year is downright shameful. I know that there is little control over the SEC portion of the schedule. I also know that their schedule could have been much more impressive were it not for the meltdowns at Georgia and Tennessee. FSU has also been surprisingly awful. Who knew?

Still, the OOC schedule is just chicken-poop for a team that is challenging for the national title on a regular basis. It is easy to make excuses when you compare the schedule to those of the PAC 10 and Big 10 contenders, but come on man — this is the SEC.

I’ll be impressed with Florida’s offense when they put big numbers up against a solid defense. Looks like we’ll have to wait for the SC game to see how that works out.

In spite of all that, I agree that the Gators are Number 1 until proven otherwise. I feel better about Bama’s chances to prove otherwise this year. I just hope we get the opportunity to do that. It’s a long row to hoe.

Alabama has never been known as a team that looks ahead, even before Saban. If it was a bottom of the pile team like FIU, ULM or someone like that then I would have fear, because Alabama is known to not get up for those types of games and squeak by (or even lose) sometimes. SC is no bottom of the pile team, and they WILL be ready for them. Take the 17 and go to bed…not going to be close. Snead could not set his feet and neither will Garcia.

Before looking ahead to the Fla. game, I would suggest a THOROUGH review of the second half in the Tenn. game. The dawgs trailed 24-19 and were still in the game. Then boom, the wheels came off and the rest is history. Each and every play, and player, should be noted as to where the breakdowns occurred. This analysis must be done, and adjustments made before the next game.
