The Fearless Friday Forecast

Ouch.

Your Fearless Forecaster went 5-5 last week because he didn’t know that:

**–An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty (they’ve asked us not to call it excessive celebration) could be called for players looking into the stands or pointing to the sky. Nevertheless, LSU made the plays at the end of the game and deserved to beat Georgia.

**–The Tennessee offense could get any worse than it was. Auburn, to its credit, took advantage of that.

**–Miami would bounce back from an embarrassing loss at Virginia Tech and show a lot of heart to beat banged-up Oklahoma. Randy Shannon’s team is looking at 11-1.

**–Florida State’s football program could become more dysfunctional than it already was and lose on the road to Boston College.

**–Clemson could lose to a 1-3 Maryland team whose only win was against James Madison (38-35) in overtime.

That leaves us at 35-15 after five weeks. We’ll hope to do better this time out.

1. Georgia Tech at Florida State: If I’m Paul Johnson, I am concerned about what I will find when I get to Tallahassee. The Seminoles are going to rally and play great or they are going to go completely in the tank. I think Florida State will play hard but the truth is Georgia Tech is a better team. Georgia Tech 28, Florida State 24.

2. Georgia at Tennessee: After watching Georgia struggle to run the ball against LSU, it’s pretty clear what Monte Kiffin, the Tennessee DC, will do. He’ll stuff the run and bet that Georgia QB Joe Cox and WR A.J. Green can’t beat him. Georgia will speed up the tempo on offense and wear down the Tennessee defense in the second half. The Drama Dawgs win another close one. Georgia 21, Tennessee 17.

3. Florida at LSU: I’m not a doctor and I don’t play one on TV. But I’m here to tell you that Florida wins if  Tim Tebow plays. Florida also wins if Tim Tebow doesn’t play. It’s called defense and Florida has a great one. It will be a classic. Florida 17, LSU 14.

4. Auburn at Arkansas: Auburn showed me a lot by winning at Tennessee. Now the Tigers will be in a track meet in Fayetteville. Somebody in this game is going to have to make a defensive stop. Auburn has a better chance of doing it. Auburn 42, Arkansas 35.

5. Alabama at Ole Miss: Everybody is telling me what a great game this is going to be. I don’t see it. Alabama can beat you so many ways. They can grind it out. They can hit the big play. Jevan Snead, the Ole Miss quarterback, really struggled against a very good defense from South Carolina. Alabama’s defense is better. Alabama 28, Ole Miss 10.

6. Kentucky at South Carolina: The Wildcats will be without star cornerback Trevard Lindley which means they will have a greener than grass secondary. Do you think Coach Spurrier will want Stephen Garcia to take a few shots down the field? Gamecocks go to Alabama next week at 5-1. South Carolina 31, Kentucky 13.

7. Houston at Mississippi State: All I know is that Georgia Tech’s Josh Nesbitt, not know as a passer, threw for a career-high 266 yards against Mississippi State.  So what does that mean for Houston’s Case Keenum, who is completing 68 percent of his passes for 424 yards per game?  Houston 42, Mississippi State 31.

8. Boston College at Virginia Tech: The Hokies need to be careful not to look ahead too much to next week’s big trip to Georgia Tech. Boston College is struggling on offense but the Eagles are 4-1. If Virginia Tech QB Tyrod Taylor keeps playing well, the Hokies are going to be hard to beat. Virginia Tech 24, Boston College 14.

9. Michigan at Iowa: Iowa (5-0) might be the best team in the Big Ten but I will wait until the Hawkeyes play at Ohio State on Nov. 14 to make that judgment. Michigan lost a heartbreaker (26-20) in overtime at Michigan State last week and has the kind of spread offense that gives Iowa trouble. I still like the Hawkeyes. Iowa 21, Michigan 17.

10. Oregon at UCLA: The Ducks (4-1) have rebounded nicely after losing the opener to Boise State and have beaten California (42-3) and Washington State (52-6) in their last two outings. But Oregon may be without quarterback Jeremiah Masoli (knee). Nate Costa gets his first career start. Ducks win anyway. Oregon 31, UCLA 24.

Is anyone really dumb enough to think Tebow won’t play? Even so, I’m still giving LSU a good shot. Dawgs win in Neyland, improve to 3 and 1 in the SEC East. Hoping Florida gets a loss.

The only two I disagree with are LSU/UF and Auburn/Arkansas. LSU at home at night = win like 90% of the time. On paper, Auburn may look like the better team but the typical pattern of unexpected SEC upsets will take place (ie SC over Miss) as Arkansas will somehow inexplicably win this game.

Like your picks this week, Tony. The only thing I disagree with is that you think the UGA game is gonna be close. I think you’re underestimating just how bad the Tennessee offense has been this year. The 22 points they scored against Auburn is misleading, as a Tiger victory was never in any real jeopardy. Georgia is the better team (and I’m a Gator fan, for those of you who will undoubtedly accuse me of being a UGA homer).

My prediction is Georgia scores first. Then they have a few series of 3 and outs. Tennessee finally scores and takes the lead. Next possession Georgia drives straight down the field to take a 3 point lead at the half. Georgia gets the ball to start the 2nd half has about 3 plays and turnover. Tennessee gets held to a field goal to tie the score. Georgia then has another 3 and out. Tennessee gets good field position and scores touchdown to take the lead. Georgia gets the ball and drives down to about the 10 yard line. Then a false start followed by holding penalty and settle for a field goal. Next Tennessee possession Tennessee gets 1 first down and punts back to Georgia with about 2 minutes left in the game. Georgia again drives right back down the field and scores winning touchdown with 45 seconds left. Tennessee then gets decent return and defense finally seals deal with Rambo getting interception. Another close game. This team is so predictable!!! They only play when they are challenged!!!!! Never play or coach a full 60 minutes. If this team played all the time with some urgency this team would be great!!!

Tony, love your column and I have great respect for your knowledge of the college game, but saying you missed the UGA v. LSU pick because of the refs comes off like a cop out. Regardless of the call, UGA did not play very well at home against a league opponent. Doggies had plenty of chances to win, but didn’t.

Totally agree with your pick on Houston v. MS St. Those bulldogs couldn’t defend if you were the QB.

Georgia will look like world beaters against TN and take out some frustration on the Vols.

Wish I knew what would happen in Tallahassee. Agree that Tech is the better team, but outside of Va Tech, no other ACC team plays very consistently week-to-week. And, I’d lay odds that Miami does NOT go 11-1.

I’m being honest when I say I just can’t pick Fla/LSU. Too many variables…does Tebow play and if he does how much and how effective will he be?? Something tells me thats it’s all gonna come down to a critical play or turnover. Georgia will defeat Tennessee, I’ll say by 10 points just so the Vols can declare another moral victory. Saw some of the “Lane Kiffin Show” on Sun Sports the other day and he was saying this and that about how critical this and that was because it was only a 4 point loss to Auburn. But didn’t Tenn score a touchdown on like the last play of the game to make it even that close?? He was acting like it was anybodys game at the end. Anyway, anybody ever notice how shifty that guys’ eyes are on that show? He will look to the extreme left (at the host) and then extreme right but never right into the camera close up, only when they pan away. At very first, I thought he just didn’t know what camera to look into, but he did it the whole time! I’m telling you, that guy is the “tricky Dick” of college football, a complete fraud!

Most fans would pick Tech over FSU….and Tech should beat FSU, but the ACC is so inconsistent this year that there are no sure things in any game. If FSU wins Saturday, be prepared for another PJ meltdown…stupid players.

Georgia has better players than Tennysee, and they should win by 2 touchdowns….only, the Dawgs are no lock to score 2 touchdowns. Which Georgia team shows up this weekend…and do they finally bring both there offense and their defense? Talk about stupid players…how can you not line up correctly on a kickoff? Georgia’s glaring weakness seems to be coaching…or rather, the lack there of.

Bamma rolls Ole Miss….Jevan Snead is going to have to sleep with a night-light after this game. He’ll have nightmares of big Bama boys slinging him around like Raggedy Andy. It will be a good day to check out the chicks in The Grove, but not a good football day for Ole Miss fans.

Awbarn’s Limo hits a Razorback in Fayetteville. The Razorback walks away; Awbarn needs a tow truck. Putrid Bobby ruins the Chizler’s day.

LSU needs to beat Florida in order to lose the over-rated tag. Saint Tebow performs a miracle and heals himself. But, that’s where the miracles end. LSU’s offense scores enough points to win a defensive struggle. Crawfish etouffee and Jack Daniels trumps perch and Busch Light.

The Warrior Chickens struggle to beat Kentucky, but defense wins the game…and SC has more of it than UK.

Va Tech hammers BC….

What’s all of this blather from the Lil Yeller Fellers about Va Tech having Tech in their name? What about Texas Tech, Tenn Tech, La Tech, Cal Tech…does GIT have some trade school trademark filed that no one knew about?

1) UGA-UT- UT has a tough D and a physical running game. Georgia has been Dr. Jekkyll-Mr.Hyde- Ya never know if the Georgia offense that walloped Ark and S. Carolina. is going to show up or if the offense that struggled against Okay state and LSU will show up. But for me the difference is that Joe Cox has flashes of brilliance whereas Crompton is consistently terrible. QB edge means UGA-20-17 over the vols.

2) LSU-UF- Still not sold on LSU. UF has so many weapons, the D is rock solid, and Brantley steps in comfortably. Gators by 10.

3) Teams backed in to a corner like FSU either rise to the challenge and respond or they just flat out give up and melt down. I think Tech wins either way but if FSU isn’t at least focused then Tech can win by double digits.

4) I’m shocked that everyone thinks Bama is going to blow away Ole Miss. Not so fast my friends. We’ve won 5 in a row over Ole Miss but 4 of them were won in the final minute, 2 on the last play. Ole Miss has had this game circled for a freaking year, its in Oxford, and you can bet they are going to be more jacked for this game than any game on their calendar in years.

We beat UK comfortably last week we struggled without Donta Hightower on D and allowed 133 yds rushing which broke the Bama commandment that thou shalt not rush for 100 yds against our D. Ole Miss is 4-1 and in the one loss they simply were out of sync and not sharp due to all the practice time missed. 19 players missed practice time due to the flu sweeping their campus and you can’t underestimate the impact that had on their one loss.

I think and hope we win but I think its crazy to think we’re going to blow them out.

5) Auburn-Ark. – Tossup game but I’m taking Auburn 31-28 because overall I think they are slightly better and they have momentum on their side. Chizik really has Auburn rolling and if they stay healthy I think they’ll continue to have a tremendous y

Is it because we run it so well between the tackles? We churn out first downs and run clock? Have we been watching the same games this year?

I’m an alum as well, and would love to be an optimist, but if I look at this game objectively, I just cannot see how we solve their D. Plus, they will be playing with an extreme amount of urgency as another loss drops them to 0-3 in the conference.

Tony, If Auburn’s much faster pace offense can not tire UT’s defense, how do you expect UGA to do it?

It is the UGA defense that gets tired from UGA’s 3 min or less possesions on offense combined with UT’s ground game. UGA may lead but is kept for the most part out of the endzone. UT takes over late.

UT kept a much more dynamic Auburn offense out of the endzone for much of the game, UGA will not be a problem.

Crompton was not the problem last week. The UT WRs dropped more passes than UGA did in the spring game. Also how many INTs does UGA have?

“LSU at home at night = win like 90% of the time.”

A word to the un-wise re: LSU and their home-night winning streak…typically they play SH*T teams!! Only a handful of those night games have been vs. actual competition.

Now that the SEC & ESPN are in bed, LSU will actually be playing a lot of quality SEC opponents at night.

Also, think about each team 2 yrs ago…LSU had the best defense in the land, jacob hester, an experienced QB. Guess what…ALL THAT IS GONE. UF had a buch of true freshman on defense, Tebow as a sophomore, a weak running game….AND ALL THAT IS BETTER NOW. and let me remind you that LSU had to get five 4th down conversions to scrape by.

FL leads the nation in rushing, Tebow is a senior, and that defense that got abused 2 yrs ago…ALL Those players are still here, and they are 2 years wiser/bigger/faster.

Georgia is in trouble! Period! Coaching, atheletes, offense, defense and special teams. I mean is there an area that we don’t have concerns in? This is getting old in a hurry. Aren’t great coaches supposed to make adjustments whether it be the head coach or the coordinators or the equipment managers if a problem arises? Great coaches can adjust to the problem and try to fix it. I mean it seems like we are not even trying. Coach MR occasionally says we need to block better on running plays……you reckon! Will someone explain to me what the he!! is going on up there?

Tony is a joke to college football. Saying a unsportsman penalty is the worst call in his “32″ years shows how delusional and one sided he is. First, there’s something called replay. That wasn’t around 10 years ago. There were calls that GAVE or TOOK AWAY points from teams ALL THE TIME in the 80’s and 90’s when “tony” was following football. So how you can say a call that didn’t give or take away points is the worst shows tony’s obvious bias and lack of rational thinking. Even with replay, the refs still miss calls. A non pass int call when a player is in the end zone OR a pass int call when there was none on a bomb is far worse than some 15 yard kickoff penalty. Everyone knows that. Yet tony lets his adoration of his dawgies make him say stuff that is not even close to being true. Adding to it all is his 5-5 straight up predictions. 5-5? You can pick the home teams and go 5-5. Tony I don’t know how you got tagged with Mr College football but it’s the biggest oxymoron out there today.

UT fan, but realistically you would have to go w/Dawgs here. Factoring in expected weather, Vols lack of passing offense, and inconsistency of UGA offense, I expect a low score in the teens. UGA, like every other Vol opponent will stack the line and dare Crompton to beat them through the air. They’ll clamp down on the TE, who is Crompton’s favorite target for a variety of reasons, and take him out of play. That leaves either trying to run the ball w/Hardesty & Brown against a stacked box or Crompton having to make a play (not likely). As for the Dawgs I expect them to use their freshman TB (sorry, forget name) who played so well against LSU in giving the running game a spark and Charles, the TE, who also played well last week. Cox is the key. If he is patient and gets protection he should be able to complete enough throws, whether it’s to Green or not, to move UGA along. UT’s defense is hurting. They miss Reveiz more than expected at MLB and they have been susceptible to the big play in the past two games. I see a score of something like 17 – 14.

Question to Tony: With Dez Bryant being ruled inelligible will the NCAA possibly strip OSU of victories he participated in (ala Memphis and Michigan basketball teams) or will it once again contradict itself in haphazardly applying a rulebook that is larger in size and weight than the yearly Federal Budget? I mean, think about it for a moment. A player that has been ruled inelligible scored two touchdowns against Georgia. Shouldn’t UGA be clamoring for the “W” in light of these developments?

Vol85, have you watched UGA’s coverage of the TE? SOS and Petrino would say exploit it all day. Crompton is no Heisman winner but he did not look that bad against Auburn. In prior games I would agree he looked terrible. Dropped balls killed him last week.

Wehnever Jefferson finally gets his timing and accuracy down then our running game will come through.

LOL and others,

I imagine people’s complaint is that Tony’s line on the game could be considered a backhanded compliment at best. Check it out. LSU deserving to win was almost an aside at the very end. Like, ‘man look at this paragraph I just wrote. Let me not come off totally wrong and give some credit’. I take the nevertheless to mean ‘I really feel strongly about what I wrote first, but have to throw in this second part to not look bad.’ Just my 2 cents..

“Your Fearless Forecaster went 5-5 last week because he didn’t know that:

**–An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty (they’ve asked us not to call it excessive celebration) could be called for players looking into the stands or pointing to the sky. Nevertheless, LSU made the plays at the end of the game and deserved to beat Georgia.”

Actually you are right. That is by far the worst officiating ever. And they had replay. They missed 3 calls on the same play. Oregon touched the onside kick before it went 10 yards. CharlotteGator

As far as the game, I’m very nervous because Death Valley at night is nothing to play with. The place just breeds uncertainty. LSU’s first title year, the Gators took a totally overmatched team down there and somehow found a way to win. Then in 07 they go down, take it to LSU and then unvravel from the end of 3rd quarter on to give the game away (I’m sure LSU fans feel different). Actually, gave it away is strong. LSU had something to do with it. More like let LSU take it from them w/o putting up a fight.

I expect a classic one that goes back and forth. I’m hoping the D can step up and make amends for their performance in 07. If they do, we get a special teams play, and limit the mistakes on offense, then we can pull this one out. Tebow or not, I think that’s what the Gators need to win this one. That’s probably generic I know, but a night game in a hostile environment makes it more important for UF to focus on those things to get the win.

I’m not confident either way on this win, but obviously hope that UF wins and that Tebow sits if there’s any question whatsoever about his health or if he can’t go 100% like he has before. That seems unlikely to me, so I guess a part of me hopes he sits this one out for his sake. Playing timid is what will get him hurt again.

tigerbait: “mightyKC, we play UF every other year….AT NIGHT!”

um, in 2007 yes, and in 2009, yes. 2005, day game. 2003: day game (when frosh QB leak beat the eventual national champs). 2001: we blew the doors off in the daytime.

what are you, 12 yrs old?

also, read this, genius:

Here’s a compilation of teams that LSU has beaten on their much-hyped home winning streak in night games (currently at 21 games):

Virginia Tech (2007, 11-3) – finished ranked AP#9
Auburn (2005, 9-3) – finished ranked AP#14
FLORIDA (2007, 9-4) – finished ranked AP#13
Auburn (2007, 9-4) – finished ranked AP#15
Kentucky (2006, 8-5)
Troy (2008, 8-5)
UL-Lafayette (2006, 6-6)
Arizona (2006, 6-6)
UL-Lafayette (2009, 2-2*)
Alabama (2006, 6-7)
Middle Tennessee State (2007, 5-7)
Louisiana Tech (2007, 5-7)
Tulane (2006, 4-8)
Vanderbilt (2009, 2-3*)
North Texas (2005, 2-9)
Tulane (2008, 2-10)
North Texas (2008, 1-11)
Appalachian State (2005, FCS)

So that’s…
1 win vs. a team that finished in the AP Top 10, and
4 wins vs. teams that finished in the AP Top 25
7 wins vs. teams with a winning record (including App. State)

Not sure about the Auburn 2005 game, but I would venture a guess that LSU was the favorite in all of these games.

note that i show the streak at 21 games…LSU likes to conveniently talk about their streak of 32 night games because they use the caveat of “oh wait, only saturday night!”. LSU lost at night to Tenn in 2005, but it was on a Monday.

Here is the breakdown of the 32 games:

Breaking THE STREAK down into games against non-BCS, BCS unranked, and ranked teams -

non-BCS opponents: 16
BCS unranked opponents: 11
Ranked opponents: 5 (#17, #18, #9, #9, #16)

And one last set of stats for all you corndogs:

Since 1980 the teams have met in Tiger Stadium 14 times.

Florida has won 10 of those games.
Florida has held LSU to 13 points or less 9 times.
Florida has shut them out 2 times.
Florida has held them to single digits 4 times (LSU has not held Florida to single digits in any of the meetings.)
Florida has scored 30+ points 4 times. LSU has never scored more than 28.
Florida has won by margins of 14 or more points 8 times (55, 29, 21, 20, 18, 16, 14, 14, 12, 3) (LSU has never won by more than 7. (7, 4, 4, 3)

This is only the fourth time in the last nine seasons that LSU has been an underdog at Tiger Stadium. The Tigers are winless in the three previous occasions, losing 44-15 to Florida in 2001, 31-0 to Alabama in 2002 and 27-21 to Alabama last season.

LSU’s defense has not recorded a sack in any of its last three games, and going back to the final drive by Vanderbilt, opposing quarterbacks have thrown 113 consecutive passes without being sacked by the Tigers.

I think UF wins but it stays closer than many UF fans would like.

Here we go again!

UGA at UT: It was something like 1937 since these two teams have met without either one in the top 25. Oh how the mighty have fallen. If things for both teams mostly continue as they are UGA should pull out another heart attacking win. In my opinion this comes down to what kind of game Crompton has. If he get’s on a roll, it will be a long day for the dogs. However, the reverse is true for UGA’s running game. Our RB’s stink, but we finally found a spark in a freshman RB Ealy. “My god a freshman!” If our running game gets going it will be a long day for UT.

Tech at FSU: Ugh…I don’t wont to try to call this game. Both of these teams have done the exact opposite of what I pick all year long. A lot of emotion going on at FSU right now. I think that they are just in too much turmoil at the moment to pull it together for Tech.

UF at LSU: LSU had a lot of trouble scoring on UGA’s defense. UF’s D >>> UGA’s D. You do the math. The Tebow situation is irrelevant.

Bama at Ole Miss: Everyone in the world, and Ole Miss fans thought Ole Miss was going to win it all this year. The rest of us SECers knew better. Bama is just too strong all around and deserves to be #1 right now (Wipe that smirk off your face Ashely). Bama keeps rolling.

Auburn at Arkansas: Auburn found their offense! Arkansas doesn’t have a defense! Auburn in a 40ish – 20ish game.

Their panties are in twist over your opinion of how the call ranks
in terms of college football history. How dare you have an opinion
Tony you are not eligible for that because of where you went to
school. Of course it’s silly but with clowns what else would you expect? It’s amazing isn’t it that they are just too stupid to
look past their hatred to see the bigger picture? They never ask
why would Tony believe this. They just jump to the conclusion that
it is because you went to Georgia. I understand your position and to
reaonable folks it makes sense. First of all there is a difference
between a missed called due to human error and calling something
arbirtarily that no amount of eyes and film will back up. Any call
like this past week and the Nebraska five down situation are calls
that must be viewed as “just can’t be allowed to happen”.
It strikes at the integrity of college football as a sport and none of us want that. With the money that is at stake in college sports from
gambling to money made by tv networks we cannot afford to not view it
as the potential for great damage to the sport we all love.
Thanks Tony for bring the attention and scrutiny needed on this matter.
All college football fans stand to lose if we let this go without an
appropiate outcry.

Regarding “banged-up Oklahoma”: both staring defensive ends and both starting safeties were out injured for the Canes along with the starting FB ( a true freshman RB replaced him) and the best hit of the night that came on the opening kickoff of the second half was courtesy of a UM walk-on. I know the Sooners were missing QB Bradford and TE Gresham but the injuries weren’t as one-sided in favor of OU as most people think. I enjoy your columns, great stuff!

-The Tigers are NOT good. It doesn’t matter when or where they play. They were overrated going into a game with a very average Georgia team and squeaked out a victory. They are still overrated and Tebow, Brantley, Kerwin Bell, or whoever lines up behind center for UF will win HANDILY.

Dawgs win, Tech loses cause they are not playing Mississippi State or Jacksonville State, or some other nursing home. Simple Dawg it is easy to line up incorrectly on a kickoff when you don’t line up. It was the old break from the huddle quick type kick that they were running and the ball was kicked from the right hash. Curran just went on the left side of the kicker cause that’s where his lane is.

Don, my hat is off to Mississippi State. I, for one, thought LSU was thru. However, the legend of the LSU defense was reborn. UGA was all LSU could handle, but we know how that came out. What I like about this Tiger team, is that they are learning, and the coaches are learning. I think we may see more or R. Randal and less of Russell sheppart, but neither one of them knows the play book yet. The thing about the LSU Tigers, is that they seem to believe in themselves, no matter how wet the field (Washington, Vandy, MS State, and perhaps Florida–50% chance). The season is only now entering the 2nd half, and the best is yet to come.

Go Tigers, whip up on the blessed Gators.

Remember the Florida Ga game 2 years ago?. Correct me if I am wrong, but didn’t Ga rush the end zone after the first touchdown? Snubbed their noses at the officials and the whole world and didn’t give a damn who saw it. Then M Richt acted like he didn’t know a thing about but didn’t try to slow them down. I think Tech’s offense runs wild again. Bama plays its typical smashmouth football. UGA finds an identity, Washaun lives up to the #24 tradition and Marlon will have us all thanking his Grandmother.
Auburn makes Bobby wish he could have coached there. Like Georgia LSU’s offense finds traction and the D gets to Brantley on a regular basis. Comes down to special teams with Holliday having a big game.

Who gets the gold? Well, in sports as in life, it all comes down to no guts, no glory. And yes, you are right Mr. Barnhardt, the UF-LSU showdown should be a classic. In the end though, you will see why Tim Tebow will go down as the greatest college football player of our time.
I always thought I would never pick anyone over Herschel, but Tebow is a once-in-a-lifetime type guy, and could actually will his team to a victory even if he doesn’t play!! It’s not only the tangibles, but the intangibles that you must take into consideration. Tebow has both, and is a player we should all enjoy as he makes his final lap around the SEC. Regardless of who your fav. team is, you know deep down that your $$ goes on Tebow and the Gators. “No”, he says, “The seat is empty.”
“This is incredible,” said the man. “Who in their right mind would have a seat like this for the LSU-Florida game, the biggest sporting event in the world, and not use it?”
He said, “Well, actually, the seat belongs to me. I was supposed to come with my wife, but she passed away. This is the first LSU game we haven’t been to together since we got married in 1957″.
“Oh … I’m sorry to hear that. That’s terrible. But couldn’t you find someone else – a friend or relative, or even a neighbor to take the seat?”.

Florida has not had Deonte Thompson at WR since game one. He is a difference maker on offense for the Gators. Big time speed and big time receiver. He is full speed for Saturday night, and Brantley and he will hook up a bunch. Tebow, even if cleared to play, will not play unless Brantley is not doing the job. And Brantley will do the job. He is a future NFL starter, boys. He is real good. He is the passer as Tebow is the runner. His passing skills will open it up for Demps, Rainey, and Moody for about 150 to 200 on the ground, and Brantley will get 200 to 250 in the air. Then the Gators rest (he plays some) Tebow again for Arkansas, and then he comes back for the Georgia game all healthy and ready for some more pounding on the Dawgs. LSU will give the Gators a battle down there, but the Gators will win because they are just a better team.

Jimmy Hyames (host announcer) asked Chuck Cavaleras (Sports writer for the Knoxville News-Sentinel to give his take on the Dawgs. He said the following: should not be 3&2, worst defense in conference, worst penalized in conference, make bonehead mistake and …..now hear this……He said they are DUMB! Tell Richt & Team

Joey, you are clueless if you think UGA had BETTER players than Florida last year. Bama is simply coached better and was loaded with seniors. Florida has better players than ANYONE in the SEC. Only a retard can’t agree with that.

As far as UGA, they could blow out Tennessee tomorrow stopping the Vols on D. Cox should be able to throw all over the UT secondary, but then again, can UGA duplicate a turnover-less game? Amazing how well they played against LSU, but this game is THE MOST IMPORTANT GAME IN MARK RICHT’S TENURE. The honeymoon is over. Georgia simply has a SIGNIFICANTLY more talented team and MUCH more loaded roster than UT. Richt CANNOT afford to fall to 3-3. He HAS to win 8 games this season to avoid some serious pressure in 2010. He WILL have to replace staff at the end if this season if he waddles through to a 7-5 finish (or worse). 7-5 or worse is a LOCK if UGA loses tomorrow. Could this be the beginning of the end for CMR? Let’s hope UGA wins that game for the sake of the staff. Tony, if you think I am wrong, you are a fool. I can e-mail you some powerful names who are none to happy with the state of UGA football. Some are saying we are “stuck” like we were when Donnan was let go.

Chuck Uga

Only a moron would compate UT’s stats to UGA’s. UGA hasn’t played Western Kentucky (what a joke) or Ohio. they played Okalhoma State and Arizona State. UT was NEVER in the Auburn game and threw a TD at the buzzer to make it 22-26. Auburn is NOT that good. UGA has no business losing tomorrow, but they may because of rain, freshmen running backs and possibly Mike Bobo matched against Monte Kiffin (scary). But UGA’s D shoould have a field day if they focus on stopping Hardesty.

UGA would have likely lost last week anyway 15-13. LSU could have kicked a field goal late, but the TD was much easier because of the bad call. LSU and UGA are pretty much equal in talent. LSU just had a significant edge in experience at running back and QB.

Good Morning All!
I think the UGA-TN game will interesting only to the extent as to how the ‘Dogs will manage to lose it. What will the excueses be this week?? That they had to take a bus trip 2.5 hrs. across the mtns. to K’ville?? For the life of me I cannot see the ‘Dogs answering the call today. Pappa Kiffen will outcoach CWM. Of course who couldn’t?? I find it telling when I asked my wife–a HUGE ‘Dog fan–last night if she heard any buzz about the game. Her response was “no, I don’t think anyone really cares anymore.” And she moves in an environment where there are a LOT of rabid ‘Dog fans. I feel sorry for CMR to a degree. I don’t think he sees what’s right in front of him; that his once proud program is getting away from him. As I have asked before, can anyone see the same discipline and focus that was required to win the “hobnail boot” game being present currently?? Sad, really sad.

Tony if the worst call you have ever seen is the “excessive celebration” penalty against Ga. what do you call a block in the back where the offended person was never touched, a dropped ball called complete when everyone in the stadium could see he dropped it and the dumbest, no stopped clocked when the receiver not only made a first down but also went out of bounds. All happening in the same game. The official that called the pass complete was standing next to the Carolina receiver where the drop occured. I could see in from the upper deck between 35 and 40 yard line but he couldn’t. Talk about needing glasses. Is the difference that Tech won the reason we heard very little if anything from you so called experts but so much about the Ga. call. There was no statement from that sissy the ACC has a comissioner or the head of the ACC officials. At least the SEC admitted they were wrong. Maybe no word form the ACC office is because Sissy Swafford was the North Carolina athletic director for around 10 years. Maybe that’s why Carolina gets all the calls especilyy in basketball even though they don’t need them. He is so scared of comments from fans he want even list his email address so he can be called out on cheaters like himself when the so called experts won’t. Your an absolute fraud by calling the Ga. penalty the worst you have ever seen.

2nd and 22 (I think you usually go by another name)…I didn’t say that first, the pregame CBS announcers said it earlier in the year. And I was talking about the defensive side of the ball. Yes, every player on Florida’s second team defense would start or play a bunch of minutes on every other team in the SEC. They are that good…and that deep of defense, period. Lawrence Marsh, Florida’s best defensive tackle, has hardly played this year due to an ankle injury. The d-line has not missed a beat. Spikes has been hurt. The LB core has been awesome. Cunningham missed 2 games to injury and the DE play did not suffer at all.The only way Florida loses tonight is by multiple turnovers and LSU controlling the game with a solid ground game. Is LSU capable of doing that? Yes. Do I believe they will? No. Florida 24-10.

I dunno what to think. Florida’s marquee game to date this season was against Tennessee. That’s not much of a measuring stick. LSU has to be the most unimpressive No. 4 team that I’ve ever seen. Many questions will be answered this weekend. The big question: did Superman survive his brief encounter with Kryptonite? My guess is that he was never in as bad a condition as many have feared. That is the only way that he will be allowed to play today, and I just have a gut feeling that he will, indeed play.

I fear that Ole Miss has more potential than they have shown thus far. They ALWAYS lay it all on the line when they play Bama. This is a tradition that precedes most of the young-uns who post on this blog. The Crimson Tide has no margin of error in this game. I see this as a bigger test than was VA Tech — I don’t care what Ole Miss has done prior to this game. They lost to Vandy the week before they upset the Gators in the swamp last year and they followed that up by losing to SC the following week.

Auburn fans are downright giddy with the early results of the Chizik era, and with good reason. They should enter this game with overwhelming confidence. That said, I can see how Arkansas matches up against the Tigers better than anyone else that they have yet faced. If they can’t keep pressure on Mallett, then he could wreak havoc on their largely un-tested secondary. I expect this game to turn into a shooting match wholly uncharacteristic of SEC tradition. Like the Miami v. FSU game, it could come down to who has the ball when the clock runs out.

Vols vs. Dawgs has to be the most schizophrenic game of the weekend. Tennessee’s predicament is understandable, but who would have thought that a contest between two of the perennial powers of the SEC East would come down to which team is going to pull off the biggest choke job? If Georgia can’t rise to the challenge and play a complete game today, then the assistant coaches in Athens should get serious about updating their resumes.

It’s a great day to be a college football fan. Hope everyone has a good time today, win or lose.

Okay, let’s cut to the chase: this week’s premier SEC match-up, and arguably the premier match-up in the country, is Florida vs. LSU. Number One vs. Number Four in the nation. Two undefeated teams, two division-leading SEC contenders, two possible BCS national title contenders. As one of the LSU players was quoted this week: “LSU vs. Florida? This is why we play football.”

LSU has a lucky, chance-taking coach, a very good and improving defense, and a competent, patient offense. The Tigers feel perfectly comfortable in a home night game, cheered on by more screaming LSU fans than this Gator cares to count. Their home night game record over the past decade is rock solid, and they will bring everything they have and leave it on the field. They have defeated the Gators in their last two home meetings in Death Valley, in close, hard-fought games. They have confidence and heart.

The Gators have a great defense, and an offense that has shown the potential to be great, too. The Gators may be missing their star quarterback, with a potential star understudy starting in his place. Can the Gators rally and win a tough one on the road with or without their starting QB? This is a character game for the Gators. Win this one, and the rest of the regular season looks manageable. Lose this one, and every remaining game counts twice in the BCS Big Picture.

Predicted outcome: too close to call. I choose not to pick for fearing of jinxing my Gators, but I will be watching. You can bet on that. “This is why we play football.”

In the SEC, a win is a win is a win. Last night’s Florida-LSU game in Death Valley wasn’t pretty. It was a hard-fought defensive struggle that may have played to the greatest strengths of both teams: their defenses. When the Gators play the Tigers in Death Valley, I’ll take a 10-point win over a 7-point loss every time.

Congratulations to the Tigers for leaving everything they had on the field. The Gators and Tigers may meet again in Atlanta in December, but that’s up to the Tigers, who still control their own SEC destiny.

“When he was done beating the Tigers, several of them waited around for him to finish an interview so they could shake his hand at midfield.

“‘He came out there and gave a great effort,’ LSU defensive tackle Charles Alexander said. ‘He is one of the greatest college football players to play the game.’”

I continue to be amazed by Tebow. I have been a LSU season ticket holder since 1982 and have been to numerous road games all over the country. I have never watched a better player than him. He is the heart and soul of that team.

The Gators’ defense is very strong. Their game plan of pressuring Jefferson was the difference.

LSU’s defense played hard and is much improved over last year. However as a LSU fan I don’t understand why Miles didn’t play Jarrett Lee to provide some spark. Jefferson holds the ball too long and takes unnecessary sacks; 13 in the last 2 games. Why Russell Shepard did not play boggles my mind.

Congrats to the Gators for a hard fought and deserving win. Good luck the rest of the way.

On other notes . . . .

Congratulations to the Yellow Jackets and their fans. Regardless of the present state of the Florida State football program, last night’s Georgia Tech win in Tallahassee was a big one. Despite an ugly loss to Miami, a 10-win season and a possible ACC championship berth are still within reach. The Jackets have a lot to play for.

As for our other home state team, the Dawgs appear to be in a sorry state after yesterday’s embarrassing loss to Lane Kiffin’s Volunteers. The Dawgs were anemic on offense, and pathetic on defense. How the heck did a talented defense make under-performing Vols QB Jonathan Crompton look like a Heisman candidate? How does Mark Richt field a team like this with five consecutive top-5 recruiting classes? I like Mark Richt, I think he’s a good coach and an even better man, but he needs to wake up to the fact that his fans, boosters and supporters will be talking about his job soon and not just the jobs of his defensive coordinator and assistants if he doesn’t take steps to fix the Dawgs’ defense. If I were a Dawg fan, I would be furious not because the Dawgs lost but because they looked “lost” against an arguably lesser team.

And speaking of the hot seat . . . what about Florida State? I said it earlier this week, but it bears repeating now that the Seminoles have officially posted their worst opening record since 1976 (Bowden’s first year and the last time the Seminoles opened 2-4): Bobby Bowden is a living legend whose time has come and gone. It’s now time for him to depart the stage for the greater good of the program that he built from mediocrity to dominance. No more talk about extending his contract through 2010. Bobby needs to recognize that every day longer he coaches delays the necessary and inevitable regime change that must accompany the rebuilding of the FSU program.

Alabama squashed Ole Miss in a game that was not as close as the 22-3 score would indicate. The Crimson Tide increasingly looks to be in the driver’s seat in the SEC Western Division, and they can control their own destiny by beating LSU and Auburn to return to Atlanta for a likely rematch of last year’s SEC championship game.

There will be more surprises in the SEC this season, but the hierarchy now seems to be established. After yesterday’s game, only Florida, Alabama, LSU, Auburn and South Carolina (!) look to still be in contention for the SEC title. Given the recent football history of AU and USC, it would appear to be a narrower 3-way race hinging on the outcome of the Bama-LSU and SEC championship games.

Coach O—-I have no idea for what team you cheer, but speaking as a long-time Gators fan, I am always happy when the Gators get a win in Baton Rouge. Since Spurrier moved on and Saban and Miles have revived the LSU program, the last four series games played in Baton Rouge have been decided by 12, 4, 4 and 10 points. The last three years, the winner of the LSU-UF game has played for and won the BCS national championship game. Frankly, you can mock the win as “unimpressive,” but I’ll take the damn win and run with it

The outcome of the last four games has nothing to do with voodoo or Baton Rouge on a Saturday night. LSU had good teams for the past four years. The quality of the LSU team this year is questionable at best. They still haven’t done anything to indicate that they have a good team this year.

Still, like you said, a win is a win.

LSU Tiger quarterback Jefferson doesn’t look like a winning SEC QB. He has talent, but his weaknesses undermined the possibility of success by the Tigers. 9 times in 10 the Gators would beat LSU this year. Tebow should win the Heisman again this year. LSU defense played well enough for Tiger win, but offense just doesn’t operate–season it too short for Jefferson to learn enough for a rematch with Florida. Tigers will be very lucky if they go 10-2.

If your team still has to play Florida, this might help:
The Florida center turned his head just before snapping the ball which could have been called against the Florida offense–but instead it resulted in Tigers being called off sides, again, and again. Finally in the 2nd half, the refs asked the center to quit it.
Even so, Gators were too much for the Tigers. Great win.

Go LSU TIGERS, whip up on Auburn.

Coach O

Too bad Florida doesn’t play Auburn. It would help their strength of schedule. Looks like South Carolina will turn out to be the most powerful opponent that Florida will face during the regular season.

The only thing that the Swamp Lizards proved Saturday night was that they’re slightly better than Mississippi State and Georgia. The Gators are fortunate that MSU found a way to lose that game against LSU. Otherwise, they wouldn’t be able to claim that they have played against a ranked opponent this year.

Coach O

October 11th, 2009
12:54 pm

For those who think that I have a personal vendetta against the Gators, lets have a look at Florida’s 2009 schedule:

Charleston Southern – 2 & 3
Troy – 2 & 2
Tennessee – 3 & 3
Kentucky – 2 & 3
LSU – 5 & 1
Arkansas – 3 & 2
MSU – 2 & 4
Georgia – 3 & 3
Vandy – 2 & 4
South Carolina – 5 & 1
FIU – 1 & 4
FSU – 2 & 4

Florida is Number 1 because they finished last season as Number 1. Winning this schedule wouldn’t get a team into the Top Ten if they weren’t already there. Boise State has a better argument.

Joe Bob Thibodaux

Atlanta Gator: Gators probably could have scored again at the end of the game with either a field goal or TD. HERNANDEZ played a good game, too, for Florida. Joe Bob,

I can understand why LSU fans are happy with this loss. After squeaking past MSU and Georgia like you did, it was obvious that the No. 1 team in the country should have blown you guys right out of the stadium — regardless of which QB was taking snaps. That didn’t happen.

Florida and LSU may both have pretty good football teams this year, but neither team has really done anything on the field of play to prove that contention.

O, we aren’t happy with the loss. We just got beat by a better team. We had our chances to win, and couldn’t. This is a tough conference, even the East, which you don’t seem to want to acknowledge. If the Gators get a chance to play Bama, or even Arkansas, I suppose that just isn’t any national competition. Oh well. In a way that is a surprise to me. The Offense just isn’t there. At this date, it looks like the D can play with any team, but the O, oh no.
Its a shame, too, because LaFell, Dickson, and Scott are good players. Jefferson just isn’t a pocket QB. Jefferson just doesn’t know how to get the players the ball–and doesn’t know how to avoid the sack. There just isn’t enough time left this season to work out his problems.
I was expecting Florida to pass the middle, but they didn’t. Tebow was not caught behind the line much–scrambled like a Heisman winner.
Thanks for the link.

Whew! Just glad to get the Ole Miss game over with. I was more worried about this game than any other including VT, LSU, UT,AU. Could have been a lot better though. As dominating as our D was we’ve got some work to do on red zone offense.

UF-Great, dominating defense.

Ark- Better than we think and despite their loss I still think AU is going to be a helluva team. They just ran into a Ark team that happened to be clicking on all cylinders yesterday.

At this point it looks like S Carolina is the only remote challenger to UF in the east. The thing is though that there is no way that Carolina beats both UF and Bama so with 2 sec losses even if UF drops one game somewhere they are extremely unlikely to lose 2 games. So it looks like UF has pretty much wrapped up the east after all.

Bama definitely has a decided advantage in the west division race since we’re now up by 1 game. I can see us losing 1 game maybe but I don’t see us losing 2 games. It will be hard for LSU and Auburn to both go the rest of the season without losing at least one. They play each other so that one game will eliminate one of the 2.

Lotta football still be played though and I’ve already started worrying about a South Carolina team that is one poor 3rd down Garcia pass away from being undefeated. Its looking to me like Carolina might be the 3rd best team in the conference and certainly the 2nd best in the east.

I agree about South Carolina. How much motivation will SOS crank up by pointing out to his players that they are the visitors for the Homecoming Game in Tuscaloosa?

I knew that Arkansas was improving when Bama played them. They did a good job of stuffing the Tide’s power running game and forced Bama to beat them with big plays. Alabama seemed hell-bent on establishing a clock consuming, plain vanilla power game against the Rebels. It was a good game plan and it worked, but I would have liked to see more TD’s and less FG’s. Probably good for the team in the long run to win it like they did though?

jumbeauxtiger: In the Georgia game, it looked like everytime Scott and Sheppard were in the same backfield, chaos. I think Sheppard doesn’t know but about 3 plays, so he is keyed on. If he were ever to chuck a pass, then something besides raw talent might emerge. This was a highly motivated Tiger team that played about as well as it was able, considering the QB play. If LSU were to try to beat Florida, Sheppard as Wild Tiger back might have been interesting. I have the feeling that something else must be going on with Sheppard. I, for one, wanted to see Jarrett Lee after 3Q in the GA game. He is more of a drop back passer. Problem is, he was thrown to the wolves last year, and his luck was extremely bad. He is bound to get his day later this year because Jefferson in the 2nd half looks like a deer caught in the head lights.

Mark Richt is not disciplined. He seems more concerned with who likes him, especially his hair. He’s not a first-rate SEC coach. Not enough physical pain in his life. No hunger. When UGA understands this, maybe games like Tennessee will go well. UGA defense is so full of holes you’d be better off straining spaghetti.

Tony are you going to blame the refs again for Ga losing?

I will be surprised if Tony doesn’t lay the blame squarely where it belongs. The zebra’s helped LSU beat Georgia last week. Georgia didn’t need any help to lose to Tennessee. The time for excuses is passed.

Florida and South Carolina are the only legitimate threats in the SEC East.

I was wrong. Tony doesn’t want to discuss the game at all.
