Georgia nips LSU; Jackets win on the road

September of 2009 will be remembered as the month that teams couldn’t stand to be loved. Give a team some love, show them some respect, and they will promptly go in the tank for you. So many examples:

Ole Miss: I told everybody in the preseason I wasn’t on the Ole Miss bandwagon. But I didn’t expect the Rebels to go to Columbia and be overwhelmed. They dropped from No. 4 to No. 21 in the AP poll.

California:  The Bears have the best running back in the country in Jahvid Best and were thought to have a shot at their first Rose Bowl in 50 years. They rose to No. 6 and got embarrassed by the Quack Attack from Oregon, 42-3.

Miami: How many folks said that Miami was back after the ‘Canes thumped Georgia Tech and jumped into the Top 10? A little rain and an angry Virginia Tech defensive line changed all that up in Blacksburg. Now Miami looks average again.

Penn State: They were talking BCS championship when Joe Pa and the boys started 3-0 against Creampuff U. Iowa went into State College and proceeded to smack the Nittany Lions in the mouth.

In all we’ve had nine teams ranked in the Top 10 lose in September. Wow.

We went 7-3 in the picks last week because we believed in Miami, Penn State, and Clemson, which just could not finish a drive in the rain and lost to TCU at Death Valley, 14-10. That gives us a mark of 30-10 after four weeks.

Let’s get on with the Fearless Friday Forecast for the first Saturday in October:

1. LSU at Georgia: LSU is 4-0 and ranked No. 4 in the nation. The Tigers are also a three-point underdog at Sanford Stadium. Why? Because we have no idea how good LSU is. The Tigers, who were held to 30 yards on the ground by Mississippi State, are ranked 74th nationally in rushing. Coach Les Miles does not like that and vows to stick with the running game against Georgia. But the fact is Georgia has proven very vulnerable to the pass. The bottom line is this: If Georgia can stay under its average for turnovers (3 per game) and penalties (10 per game) the Bulldogs will win. Georgia plays its best game of the season. Georgia 24, LSU 20.

2. Georgia Tech at Mississippi State: Last year Georgia Tech had over 400 yards rushing against the Bulldogs. Expect Mississippi State to be better on defense under veteran DC Carl Torbush. But I’m wondering how much fire the Bulldogs have after the heartbreaking loss to LSU. If Georgia Tech quarterback Josh Nesbitt plays well again, the Yellow Jackets can get it done in Starkville. Georgia Tech 35, Miss. State 24.

3. Auburn at Tennessee: Auburn is No. 3 in the nation in total offense (526.25 ypg). Quarterback Chris Todd has nine touchdown passes in his last two games. But Auburn has not played away from Jordan-Hare Stadium this season and life on the road in the SEC is just different. Tennessee needs this one to avoid an 0-2 start in the SEC with Georgia coming up this week. If quarterback Jonathan Crompton doesn’t turn it over, and that’s a BIG if, the Vols find a way to win. Tennessee 21, Auburn 20.

4. Alabama at Kentucky: The Crimson Tide has improved in every game and right now may be the best team in the country. If QB Greg McElroy (7 TD, 1 INT) continues to have the hot hand, the Crimson Tide rolls and starts getting ready for next week’s trip to Ole Miss. Alabama 31, Kentucky 7.

5. Ole Miss at Vanderbilt: The last time Ole Miss quarterback Jevan Snead failed to throw a touchdown pass in a game was in 2008 against Vanderbilt. The Commodores intercepted Snead four times in beating the Rebels 23-17 in Oxford. So Ole Miss had better be on upset alert. I believe Houston Nutt’s team bounces back from a very difficult loss at South Carolina. Ole Miss 28, Vanderbilt 20.

6. Oklahoma at Miami: Landry Jones will start the game at quarterback for Oklahoma but no one is sure if the injured Sam Bradford will play. Oklahoma needs to win in order to stay in the national championship race. Miami wants to atone for last week’s beat down at Virginia Tech. The Sooners are too good on defense. Oklahoma 24, Miami 17.

7. Florida State at Boston College: Florida State, a.k.a Team Schizophrenia, plays a lot better away from home. Offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher said it’s time for the Seminoles to grow up. He’s right. Florida State 24, Boston College 10.

8. Clemson at Maryland: Ralph Friedgen and the Terps (1-3) could really use some positive energy at Byrd Stadium, where attendance is starting to dwindle. Clemson has too many offensive weapons. Clemson  31, Maryland 21.

9. Southern Cal at California: Both teams have a loss in the Pac-10 so the loser goes home and forgets about the conference championship. Trojans are back in the hunt at No. 7 and are able to control Cal’s Jahvid Best. USC 28, California 24.

10. Arkansas vs. Texas A&M (at Arlington,Tex.): The Razorbacks got slapped around by Alabama (35-7) and may have lost some of their confidence. Texas A&M leads the nation in sacks with over four per game. Hogs still win. Arkansas 31, Texas A&M 27.

You mean you are picking Tech to beat a sec team on the road?? A team that played #4 lswho to basically an even game?? I wonder why you are picking the ACC team over the sec team?? Oh I know…in your heart of hearts you know the sec SUCKS this year. Good call.

Tony, does it occur to you that a lot of these games are not even upsets…they are just pointing how wrong the polls (that you worship) are? Get human opinion out of college football.

The best running back in the nation is Johnathan Dwyer.

Miami will beat oklaHOMO.

The sec is made up of alabammer and floriduh and the 10 dwarfs. lswho and ugag both suck….there will be a lot of sucking Saturday afternoon at the Cesspool at sanford and son stadium.

The ACC beat the sec 6 out of 10 in the regular season last year. The ACC will beat the sec 4 out of 7 this year. Why?? Because the ACC is a lot better than you give them credit for and the sec is a LOT worse…. a LOT worse.

Tony you are wrong almost as often as the polls are wrong. Mr. College football, my arse.

The vowels D is stout, played the hell out of UF, and will come to play against AU’s powerful O. AU needs to step up on its special teams (not letting the other team start at the 35-45 will greatly help) and its D needs to make tackles on first contact, not after the offensive player has bounced off 3 or 4 defenders first. AU will correct those problems on D & special teams and seems to be balanced enough to “take what the D gives them” and still score… hopefully at least 1 more than UT.

m, you just can’t stand hearing what the entire nation knows. The ACC is mid tier or lower. They’ll throw in the occassional surprise, but there will still only be 17,000 people at the ACC Championship game, the Comedy Channel will be broadcasting it and the only reason the ACC Champion will go to a BCS Bowl is because of the contract. Meanwhile the SEC Champioship game will set more attendance records, networks will sell their souls to broadcast it, Florida will win the National Championship and the SEC will go 9-1 in it’s bowls. So just sit down, shaddup and turn on the SciFi Channel, wudha?

m the idiot brags about beating SEC bottom feeders. Maybe we should schedule Duke, UVA and Maryland and brag about being 3-0 vs ACC.

Thing is we don’t need to because we play a real football schedule already. since we have beaten Tech 7 out of 8 and 30 something out of the last 40 something, maybe we should drop them from our schedule to upgrade the OOC schedule. Playing ACC teams, when the ACC is so poor, only downgrades our SOS.

Well here we are in week 5 and we still don’t really know about a lot of teams.

LSU at UGA: Don’t bet on this one. The most overrated team in the SEC plays the most undisciplined team in the SEC. Most people are saying the dawgs will win, that includes Vegas who gave says we’ll win by 3. Whaaat!? So the #18 team is favored over the #4 team by 3 huh. Unfortunately I’ve channeled my inner Munsonism and I’m just not feeling it for the dawgs. We have had 4 games to try to turn around mistakes in penalties and turnovers. It hasn’t happend and I see no reason to think that will change right now. The dawgs can get by lesser teams playing sloppy football, but that wont cut it when they face teams of equal athletic talent. LSU is equal. I say the dawgs lose this one.

Auburn at Tennessee: I wouldn’t touch this one betting wise either. Auburn has been on a roll and really racking up the offensive stats. But they’ve been doing against no one and really have only beaten West Virginia. They barely did that and the jury is still out on WVU. UT doesn’t have a QB. But they do have a good running game and a fantastic D. This one is a coin flip to me. But I’m going to say UT get’s the upset because of two things. One they are at home. Two, Auburn runs a cute misdirectional offense. Those kind of offenses can be very productive. Till it runs up against a good solid defense. Then it can get blown up. That said, if Auburn can pull out a win here than watch out in the SEC west. But I think UT will pull it out.

Georgia Tech at Miss St: ACC vs SEC. Only it’s one of the better ACC teams vs SEC bottom feeder. Last year Tech destroyed MSU. Last week MSU almost beat LSU, but had a huge let down as they couldn’t get in the endzone with 4 short tries. MSU will get better under new coach Dan Mullen, but not yet. Tech runs all over them.

Bama at Kentucky: Ha! Bama is giving the cheerleaders playing time by the 2nd half.

Oklahoma at Miami: Awesome out of conference game on paper. But Oklahoma smashes Miami. Miami is just too young and Oklahoma brings in a pretty good defense for a Big 12 team.

USC at Cal: Both had huge upsets and lost games they were not supposed to lose. Cal’s was last week. Eh…USC probably has the horses to stop Cal’s running game. Don’t bet against Carrol’s boys in big games. USC wins this and ESPN becomes the USC backup QB battle show again.

Arkansas vs Texas A&M: Interesting out of conference matchup. Middle of the road Big 12 plays middle of the road SEC. Arkansas lost a close one against UGA, and then lost huge to Bama. I don’t know too much about Texas A&M. I’ll say Petrino gets his hogs back on track and go with the SEC on this one. This is honestly a guess though.

I’ll be watching two games this weekend, UGA-LSU and Oklahoma – Miami. I’ll be mildly interested in AU-TN more out of curiosity. I expect all three to be good, hard-hitting affairs. So glad football is back in our lives.

As a Gator, I’m hoping UGA gives LSU a brutal, physical game and wears them down some. Probably pull for LSU just so they don’t come back home w/ something to prove and maybe get a big head. Definitely a stretch I know, but is probably what tips me to the LSU side in this 50-50 match-up. Well, that and having lived in Atlanta and worked with/around what I consider the minority of the Dawg fanbase. My disdain is going back to healthy rival levels, but I suspect I’ve got a few more years of detox here in football purgatory (ACC country) before I lose the extra animosity towards the Dawgs. All in all, I expect it to be a great game and look forward to watching a lot of the great players on both teams duke it out.

I found this interesting. One because I didn’t know Miss Cleo was on here guaranteeing the future; I’d like some Lotto numbers as well please.

Two, the ACC currently stands at 0-2 (funny how this isn’t ever mentioned) meaning they can only lose one of the remaining matchups left all season to hit this guaranteed mark. Looking at the remaining games, do you only see one more loss?

GaTech – MSU
GaTech – Vandy

Tech will win all three of their games against the sec bottom feeders and clemson (as usual) will stomp a mudhole in their in-state sec bottom feeder.

Their is a possibility that fsu will lose to floriduh but that still makes 4 out of 7.

If the sec was anywhere near as good as these sec idiots try to claim, the sec would win all 7. But they won’t.

And don’t fret over the Acc being 0-2 with the sec so far this year because they did the same thing last year and ended up 6-4 with the overrated bottom feeding sec.

Big Tone, as bad as I want to say UGA is going to get it together and finally impress, I am hesitant to say it plus the fact it be online for everyone to see. After all, I have been predicting (unsuccessfully) this for 4 weeks. What will make this week any different? I’m thinking we are just a jinked team with penalties and stupid coaching decisions(see poch kick).

I think it’s as simple as this…If we don’t get pressure on the qb we will lose. Sweet Willie usually struggles with a running qb so I am definitely nervous. However I am excited about the opportunity and I will be in the stands yelling my ass off and yes Gov Perdue, I will be rowdy again this week. If you don’t like it stay at the house.

If the answer is yes, then does that mean the South Division of the Colonial Athletic Assocation (CAA) is on par/equal with the ACC? You know, since they’re 2-2 when matched up head to head. What about the Sun-Belt? They’re 1-1.

Can’t have it both ways. If the dregs of the ACC don’t represent the conference as a whole, then 2 Tech wins against the bottom SEC squads don’t amount to much.

Georgia’s dropped punts, kickoffs, and rb funbles wont continue forever. Young players in pressure spots have hurt the dawgs so far. It wont continue forever. Hopefully they are battle tested enough to get over that this week. I think LSU’s roll of luck in games is going to end this weekend. They wont get the same breaks they got last weekend.

There’s something called variables, like home field advantage, injuries, referees, etc.. In the NFL they call it parity and it’s starting to show in the SEC (and other conferences but NOT THE ACC) where any team can win on any day. People like m don’t understand that Ole Miss’ early ranking and Miss St. almost beating LSU says more GOOD things about the conference than BAD. You wont see this is the Almost Competitive Conference because there is No chance that teams like Duke, NC State, Maryland, BC, and the rest of the slackers can really win on any given day against the top tier of the Almost Competitive Conference.

M is the #1 lier and denier but all tech fans are to some extent… don’t count Chan Gailey’s tenure as coach, don’t count bowl games… LSU just scored again against Tech…schedule the weakest teams in the SEC and then brag about beating Miss St. and Vanderbilt That Tech fans for you… a tradition of being mediocre and lying to cover it up.

Jonathan Dwyer has had one game ove 100 yards. I don’t think he qualifies as best back at Tech yet much less the country.

I am looking forward tio the beatdown by the second worst team in the SEC. Lube it up jackets, Miss St gonna do it to you.

The ACC was 6-4 vs the SEC last year.

Thank God & Greyhound we don’t play William & Mary because they sure whipped that Virginia arse.

You obviously don’t follow teams other than your own because if you did, you would know that parity has been a staple in the acc for the past 4 seasons.
And your argument really makes no sense. It’s simple logic what I put out there. Apparenly you can’t comprehend something so simple. Again, IF gt beats Miss st, and lsu beats ga, no dawg should be talking any trash. Miss st had 4, that’s FOUR, turnovers against LSU and still almost won. LSU had 0, ZERO turnovers. This far into the season you can make judgements like this. It’s not week 1-3 anymore. So again, if GT wins and lsu wins, then you can also conclude that the accs top teams, va tech, miami, gt, clemson, etc are on the same page and in some cases better than the ga’s, lsus and auburns. bama and fla are obviously better.

Ew sc almost lost to NC state.
Duke beat vandy last year.
Again, if gt wins and lsu wins, the acc’s top 4 are better than the secs 8-10 spots. That’s already know anyway based on last years results.

Bryan, you’re an idiot, and I won’t let you drag me down to your level and beat me with experience.

There’s no parity in the ACC, it’s bad teams that beat each other thrown in with a few who can’t beat anyone. There IS a difference. When Duke, NC State, BC, UVA, Maryland have programs worth talking about, come see me. There are TWO, count them, TWO schools in MISSISSIPPI (of all places) getting national attention. One was ranked in the top five and lost to a good SC team and the other almost beat LSU when they were ranked top 10. There are FOUR, count them, FOUR schools in the state of North Carolina in the ACC and not even one of them is worth mentioning. Where’s your parity now?

How’d that Clemson TCU game turn out for the Almost Competitive Conference?

Charlotte Gator…you must really be a sec fan because you miss the point so bad.

These ses goons on here claim the sec is the best conference in the history of the world. They also claim the ACC is the worst conference.

So how in the helle did the ACC beat the sec 6 out of 10 last year during the regular season? How could Mississippi go into Gainesville Florida and beat the eventual national champion floriduh gators the very next week after getting beat by Wake Forest? How did the #1 ranked ugag lose AT HOME to Tech? How did bowl bound Vanderbilt get beat AT HOME by Duke (last place ACC team?

The sec is the most overrated overhyped conference in history.

Can you have a conversation with someone without name calling? You do know that when someone wins an argument, the loser is the one name calling. I rest my case. Why don’t you ask Tony B is there is parity in the acc? He was one of the first ones to mention it a few years ago. Facts win arguments. You come with rants and emotions.

Fact–tcu is ranked. Clemson isn’t. TCU was FAVORED. TCU is a GOOD TEAM. Again, you really don’t know anything about college football and it shows. Thank goodness you can hide behind a fake moniker. You wouldn’t want your girlfriend or boss to know how ignorant you are, right?

And by the way, the Vegas (or any other) betting line has a lot less to do with who they think will win as it does with balancing out the betting money so it ends up split down the middle. The line on the Dallas Cowboys has been wider than necessary for years because the Dallas fans tend to be delusional. It’s all about the Franklins, nothin’ else.

Comcast channel 46 is ESPN, 47 is ESPN2…maybe you should turn these on every once and a while so you get become slightly more informed.

TCU beat Clemson
South Carolina (SEC Team) beat NC St
Cal beat Maryland
Mid Tenn St beat Maryland
Rutgers beat Maryland
South Florida beat FSU
Baylor beat Wake Forest
Alabama (SEC team) beat Va Tech
Richmond beat Duke
Kansas beat Duke
William & Mary beat Virginia
TCU beat Virginia
Southern Miss beat Virginia

First off, the reason so many Top 10 teams have lost is because they didn’t deserve to be in the Top 10 to begin with. Just proves once again that preseason polls and those who vote in them are idiotic.

To keep with the theme, here are my idiotic picks :-)

1. Georgia’s discipline problems (aka penalties) will kill them this weekend as LSU wins a close one.

2. If it were played in Atlanta, I’d pick Georgia Tech hands down. However, the sheer boredom that clouds the tiny town of Starkville will lull the Jackets into a loss on the road.

3. Tennessee’s defense will keep the score down which should make it manageable for their “quarterback” (yes, sarcastic quotation marks intended) to fall a$$ backwards into a victory.

4. UPSET ALERT!!! The over-hype bug bites Bama in their houndstooth jockies as Kentucky pulls the upset in a last second field goal. It’s just that type of season this year.

5. Simply put, Ole Miss won’t recover. Vandy wins and Ole Miss reassembles their fouton in the SEC basement.

6. Defense?? In the Big 12??? Surely you jest. Miami bounces back and wins by 4.

7. FSU and Boston College. I can’t believe this game is actually going to be televised. FSU calls heads…..it’s heads so I’ll pick them to win an ugly one.

8. Clemson is bad, but Maryland is worse. Clemson wins.

9. This one’s actually tough. USC should be the easy pick; however I’m going with Cal on this one. The dynasty ends on Saturday.

10. Arkansas proved that it can score when there’s no defense (ala Georgia). And since we’re talking about another Big 12 team, I’ll take Arkansas for a 10 point win.
