Georgia nips LSU; Jackets win on the road

September of 2009 will be remembered as the month that teams couldn’t stand to be loved. Give a team some love, show them some respect, and they will promptly go in the tank for you. So many examples:

Ole Miss: I told everybody in the preseason I wasn’t on the Ole Miss bandwagon. But I didn’t expect the Rebels to go to Columbia and be overwhelmed. They dropped from No. 4 to No. 21 in the AP poll.

California:  The Bears have the best running back in the country in Jahvid Best and were thought to have a shot at their first Rose Bowl in 50 years. They rose to No. 6 and got embarrassed by the Quack Attack from Oregon, 42-3.

Miami: How many folks said that Miami was back after the ‘Canes thumped Georgia Tech and jumped into the Top 10? A little rain and an angry Virginia Tech defensive line changed all that up in Blacksburg. Now Miami looks average again.

Penn State: They were talking BCS championship when Joe Pa and the boys started 3-0 against Creampuff U. Iowa went into State College and proceeded to smack the Nittany Lions in the mouth.

In all we’ve had nine teams ranked in the Top 10 lose in September. Wow.

We went 7-3 in the picks last week because we believed in Miami, Penn State, and Clemson, which just could not finish a drive in the rain and lost to TCU at Death Valley, 14-10. That gives us a mark of 30-10 after four weeks.

Let’s get on with the Fearless Friday Forecast for the first Saturday in October:

1. LSU at Georgia: LSU is 4-0 and ranked No. 4 in the nation. The Tigers are also a three-point underdog at Sanford Stadium. Why? Because we have no idea how good LSU is. The Tigers, who were held to 30 yards on the ground by Mississippi State, are ranked 74th nationally in rushing. Coach Les Miles does not like that and vows to stick with the running game against Georgia. But the fact is Georgia has proven very vulnerable to the pass. The bottom line is this: If Georgia can stay under its average for turnovers (3 per game) and penalties (10 per game) the Bulldogs will win. Georgia plays its best game of the season. Georgia 24, LSU 20.

2. Georgia Tech at Mississippi State: Last year Georgia Tech had over 400 yards rushing against the Bulldogs. Expect Mississippi State to be better on defense under veteran DC Carl Torbush. But I’m wondering how much fire the Bulldogs have after the heartbreaking loss to LSU. If Georgia Tech quarterback Josh Nesbitt plays well again, the Yellow Jackets can get it done in Starkville. Georgia Tech 35, Miss. State 24.

3. Auburn at Tennessee: Auburn is No. 3 in the nation in total offense (526.25 ypg). Quarterback Chris Todd has nine touchdown passes in his last two games. But Auburn has not played away from Jordan-Hare Stadium this season and life on the road in the SEC is just different. Tennessee needs this one to avoid an 0-2 start in the SEC with Georgia coming up this week. If quarterback Jonathan Crompton doesn’t turn it over, and that’s a BIG if, the Vols find a way to win. Tennessee 21, Auburn 20.

4. Alabama at Kentucky: The Crimson Tide has improved in every game and right now may be the best team in the country. If QB Greg McElroy (7 TD, 1 INT) continues to have the hot hand, the Crimson Tide rolls and starts getting ready for next week’s trip to Ole Miss. Alabama 31, Kentucky 7.

5. Ole Miss at Vanderbilt: The last time Ole Miss quarterback Jevan Snead failed to throw a touchdown pass in a game was in 2008 against Vanderbilt. The Commodores intercepted Snead four times in beating the Rebels 23-17 in Oxford. So Ole Miss had better be on upset alert. I believe Houston Nutt’s team bounces back from a very difficult loss at South Carolina. Ole Miss 28, Vanderbilt 20.

6. Oklahoma at Miami: Landry Jones will start the game at quarterback for Oklahoma but no one is sure if the injured Sam Bradford will play. Oklahoma needs to win in order to stay in the national championship race. Miami wants to atone for last week’s beat down at Virginia Tech. The Sooners are too good on defense. Oklahoma 24, Miami 17.

7. Florida State at Boston College: Florida State, a.k.a Team Schizophrenia, plays a lot better away from home. Offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher said it’s time for the Seminoles to grow up. He’s right. Florida State 24, Boston College 10.

8. Clemson at Maryland: Ralph Friedgen and the Terps (1-3) could really use some positive energy at Byrd Stadium, where attendance is starting to dwindle. Clemson has too many offensive weapons. Clemson  31, Maryland 21.

9. Southern Cal at California: Both teams have a loss in the Pac-10 so the loser goes home and forgets about the conference championship. Trojans are back in the hunt at No. 7 and are able to control Cal’s Jahvid Best. USC 28, California 24.

10. Arkansas vs. Texas A&M (at Arlington,Tex.): The Razorbacks got slapped around by Alabama (35-7) and may have lost some of their confidence. Texas A&M leads the nation in sacks with over four per game. Hogs still win. Arkansas 31, Texas A&M 27.

Yes Bryan, I called you a name so I must be wrong. I like how you immediately ran to mommy, aka Tony, to back you up and tell how mean I was being. And using my initials is not hiding behind a fake moniker. You got on your high horse about FACTS, but then you just got upset and called me ignorant. Who’s ranting on emotions now? Lol, GT fans get one little taste of what they think is success and then they are world beaters. The FACT is that the option offense is perfect for GT. They run a high school offense (boring to watch as well but that doesn’t matter bc nobody’s ever there to watch), play in a high school stadium, and have a bunch of crybaby fans who cry foul wheneveer someone picks on them. I bet you liked that “Perfect Option” song your D-bag cronies made up too lol.

Sec is florida and until last year, you can include bama. the rest of the teams are average at best. lsu is not a top 5 team. my gosh, they barely beat msu. ga is def not top 10 unless they play a solid game tomorrow. then maybe. top 10 teams don’t play as sloppy as ga has. what is really shameful is if ga wins tomorrow, they will likely be in the top 10. sorry but they don’t belong unless—unless they play solid football and win convincingly.

Wait…Georgia was ranked #1 when they played Tech last year? Forgive me if I’m wrong, but didn’t UGA have the most ungodly amount of injuries (close to 20 season-ending ones?).

And Georgia fans…hopefully you don’t act like all these Tech fans after you beat the Jackets. I’m not even a Dawg fan but it’s annoying. 45-42 ahahahahahah!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can’t wait to see the line next week for florida lsu. That will tell the tale. I think ga and lsu are evenly matched and it will be a good game. Who wins is a coin flip. It would be funny for lsu to win and be ranked 4th and play 1, in flordia and be a 2 td underdog. Of course Tebow’s health will have a big impact on that.

Ew sc almost lost to NC state.
Duke beat vandy last year.
Again, if gt wins and lsu wins, the acc’s top 4 are better than the secs 8-10 spots. That’s already know anyway based on last years results.

Just check out the polls or the most recent National Championships.
Your arguement is baseless and stupid and could only come from a person who NEVER played the game.

“m”….I’ve come to the conclusion that of all of the idiot Tech fans that frequent these boards you are the most ignorant. You are calling the SEC Alabama and Florida and a bunch of bottomfeeders? Have you taken a look at your conference lately?!?

FSU gets beat at home by South Florida and had to come from behind to beat Jacksonville St. in the 4th quarter. There will be nothing left of that program when Florida is done with them.

Clem’sSons got beat by TCU….the same Clemson team that Yech come all around getting beat by.

Virginia got beat by William and Freakin Mary

UNC was suppose to be a contender…pffft

NC St….uh…SC beat them in game one, remember? Yeah, that’s SC of the SEC.

Tech got squashed by Miami and all of the sudden it looked like the ACC had a REAL team….NOT…the Canes got turned into a tropical DEPRESSION by VT.

So that leaves VT as the only team with a pulse in the entire pathetic conference. Yeah, that’s the same team that Alabama trashed in the opening game of the season.

No way the ACC will ever match up to the SEC. They will win a game or two every 6 or 7 years, just like Tech will beat UGA every 6 or 7 years if you are lucky enough, like last season, to catch us with half of our team injured. The ACC is the most pathetic conference in the land….just admit it man.

m,

You’re right, I’m clearly missing the point “so bad”. Please explain it to me.

You bring up the reg. season record (and only the reg. season) to show the SEC sucks, but the ACC’s record against the Colonial South and Sun Belt aren’t the point and don’t reflect on the ACC.

You bring up that the eventual “NATIONAL CHAMPION” came from the SEC and was only beat all season by an SEC squad, and that somehow is a black-eye to the SEC. Didn’t a couple ACC squads get a shot at UF, one at home?

You bring up Vandy losing at home to Duke, but Vandy beating division winner Boston College doesn’t matter because it’s in the bowl game which apparently doesn’t count.

You bring up #1 ranked UGA (which they weren’t at the time) losing to Tech, but then Tech losing in Atlanta to a bad SEC team from last year isn’t the point.

Seems to me that if something isn’t convenient or a question you want to respond to, then it’s not ‘the point.’ Please help me understand.

CharlotteGator,

Leave m alone. It’s simple.

- First you take Tech’s record against Miss St. and Vanderbilt and divide it by the present value of 5 wins against the SEC over the next 10 years.
- Then you take the derivative of the 2-2 record against the CAA South which at a 95% confidence level is greater than the 1-1 record against the SunBelt.

- After that you multiply the plays Tech’s best D lineman sits on the bench by the amount of Heisman votes Dwyer will get
- You take all those results to the power of 2, then divide each one by the 6-4 record against the SEC last year (since the bowl season didn’t happen and everyone knows you can’t divide by zero)
- Take each result, plug it into the quadratic equation, calculate the load created by 20,000 empty seats at a Tech game (or ACC Champ. game since they’re equivalent) and multiply all that by three and you’re left w/ the very simple equation.

Predictions, Predictions, Predictions.

Well here is mine:

1.) Tebow scores a 7 on his eye exam (jump pass technique)-Oh I mean the Gators don’t lose this week (bye week my bad).
2.) Joe Cox forgets to shave his head this week, therefore, the helmet fits tighter and he doesn’t have to make passes looking thru the ear hole (like last week). Dawgs by 10
3.)Nesbitt fakes himself out on the trip reverse wilcat stingem play and gives up the game winning touch down to the Miss State Defense (however none of this will be seen as the camera man is faked out as well) Go You Triple Option fools!
4.)Crompton finds his old NWA tape and finally realizes the songs not about him after all these years. He throws 4 picks but the big UT running back is too much for the Tigers.
5.)Bama slides by KY, ….as KY beats themselves up the night before worring about playing the #4 ranked team in the nation. It was that last round of Jager at the bar for the O-Line …and KY’s QB suffers for it. WHEW!
6.)GOOOOOOO VANDY GOOOOO!

LSU beats Georgia, once again the only weakness in Tony’s predictions is being an alumni of UGA. LSU played poorly last week looking ahead, the team that beat Tech black and blue last year will be the team that will beat Georgia. Auburn beats Tennessee. Auburn is the surprise team of the SEC this year. That win by West Virginia against Colorado last night showed something about an opponent Auburn has beat while just now learning how to play with new coaches.

Florida’s problem against Tennessee was the same problem they have against any speedy defense, Tebow. When your offense relies on one person, it’s easier to gameplan for. Auburn’s offense doesn’t rely on any one person. Auburn’s Offense>UT Defense…Auburn wins this one by 17.

Tennessee- Auburn goes to Rocky Top and pulls out a thriller.Kiffin says something stupid after the game and is slapped down by SEC commissioner…again. Tenn 27-Auburn 28

Arkansas- Texas A&M….too much defense. Petrino loses his mind and calls Philadephia Eagles to say he “always wanted to coach in the NFL and coach a player like Michael Vick”. Arkansas 14 AM 28

Kentucky…. Bama takes them to the woodshed. Ken 10- Bama 44

Ole Miss….B Johnson pulls the upset. Houston Nutt loses his mind, and calls Ark and asks for his old job back. Ole Miss 24 Vandy 34

Miss State….Much as I would like to see Tech lose, it aint happen this Saturday. MSU 21 TEch Sux 31

First time posting on here… just had to respond to m the idiot from the North Ave. Trade school.

Rivalries are a great tradition in college football. As a lifelong Atlantan and UGA fan, I’ve always pulled for GT except against the Dogs and SEC teams. m has neither the class nor intelligence to realize that belittling your competition also lowers your own standing. To call Athens a cesspool or make fun of Sanford Stadium is simply ignorant. Athens is truly a “classic” college town and Sanford has to be a Top Ten facility. The best thing GT’s stadium has going is the skyline. When I was a kid I went to games at both schools… Sanford had tradition – The Hedges, the train tracks (still remember chants of Go To Hell Grehound! when a visitor’s bus parked between the tracks and field), the grass banks in the corners, and UGA, the best mascot in college football. GT had Techwwod homes… nothing like tailgating in the projects… Grant Field looked like the stadium from “The Longest Yard” w/ Burt… and an antique car.. OK the car is kinda cool.

The UGA/GT rivalry is great… but it is one of 4 for UGA that are larger than any GT rivals… UF, Auburn, and UT are all huge… hell, even UGA/Clemson has more history than GT/Clem… I’ll take our tradition hands down… maybe GT should get back to playing ND regularly.

I don’t always agree with Tony, but respect his opinions. He may be a UGA man at heart, but he has way too much national credibility and exposure to be written off as a “homer”.

As for the picks… I think UGA beats the Bayou Bungles… home field adv. will be huge… glorious Fall weather, big recruiting presence, and The Dawgs right the ship just enough… and will prob. lose at UT next… be interesting to see what their O does vs. Aub… and Eric Berry is a BEAST.

As for GT/Miss ST.? Who cares? “Bottom feeding SEC” against bottom feeding ACC… I’m just hoping Starkville police throw “m” in Johnny Cash’s old jail cell… oh, and lose the key.
