Will LSU unleash Shepard? Can Nesbitt take the pounding again?

Five burning questions as we head into the weekend:

1. Is LSU going to finally take the wraps off Russell Shepard? LSU (4-0) is one of only 17 undefeated teams in Division I-A but you wouldn’t believe it to hear the Tiger fans complain. That’s because statistically, it is a shaky 4-0 at best. LSU is ranked No. 105 in total offense (310.0 yards per game). One of the theories has been that head coach Les Miles and offensive coordinator Gary Crowton have been waiting until the Georgia game to unleash freshman phenom Russell Shepard. Shepard, from Houston, has carried the ball 11 times for 74 yards in four games. He is clearly talented but at the same time he is greener than grass. There is no question that LSU wants to establish the run against Georgia. Could Saturday in Sanford Stadium become Shepard’s coming out party?

2. Can Josh Nesbitt bounce back after last week’s pounding? One of the reasons I like Josh Nesbitt is that he went to my old high school (Greene County). But the main reason I like the guy is that he’s a warrior. He ran the ball 32 times and took a pounding against a very good, very physical North Carolina defense. Now he must come back and play against a Mississippi State defense that held LSU to only 30 yards rushing last week. Can he play at that level two weeks in a row?

3. Will Alabama have a letdown at Kentucky? Alabama has gotten better with each game and right now I think the Crimson Tide is the best team in the country. But every team has a letdown. After four impressive games and, with a big trip to Ole Miss coming up next week, does the Crimson Tide struggle at Kentucky? Another factor in this game is the absence of linebacker Dont’a Hightower, who was lost for the season after suffering a knee injury against Arkansas. My gut tells me that Alabama is just too physical for Kentucky to make this a game. But my gut has already been wrong a bunch of times this season.

4. How will the quarterbacks play in the Oklahoma-Miami game? With Sam Bradford, the 2008 Heisman Trophy winner, still out with a sprained shoulder, there is no question that Oklahoma is doing everything it can to build confidence in backup Landry Jones. Jones set an Oklahoma record on Sept. 19 when he threw for six touchdown passes against Tulsa. And understand there is a possibility that Bradford could be ready to play by Saturday. Coach Bob Stoops said a decision on Bradford’s status may not be made until Saturday. Miami quarterback Jacory Harris blamed himself for last week’s 31-7 thumping by Virginia Tech in Blacksburg  and vowed to play better at home. The Hokies’ defensive front took Harris out of his comfort zone. Oklahoma’s defensive front is even better.

5. Can Auburn work its magic on the road? Auburn is third in the nation in total offense (526.25 ypg) and third in scoring offense (45.25 ppg). But note that Gus Malzahn’s offense has put up those totals in four straight home games. Auburn takes its high-flying offense to Tennessee on Saturday night and it will be interesting to see what Volunteer defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin has cooked up for the Tigers. Tennessee gave up over 300 yards passing to Ohio U. last week. This is going to be a very interesting game.

The bigger question, and most probably the deciding factor, is can UGA limit the TO’s??? If they don’t have any they could win by 10 to 14. If they have their usual 3…

Miss St held #4 (what a crock) lswho to 30 yards rushing…30 yards!!! Tech will get at least 10 times that many yards rushing against these pitiful sec defenses.

lswho hasn’t held anybody back….they are one of the 10 dwarfs in the sec…you know…alabammer and floriduh and the 10 dwarfs. This is the weakest the sec has EVER been.

What are all you sec mouth breathers going to say when Tech stomps Miss St team that outplayed lswho all over the field?

Tony, Josh Nesbitt is a warrior and it is about time you slow down on your illicit love affair with Teblow and recognize Nesbitt.

And it will be funny to watch Miami beat oklaHOMO.

Here are some numbers for you:

Coach Mark Richt in 8 seasons at Georgia:

6 10 win seasons
5 times finished in the top 10
2 times finished in the top 3
3 SEC Championship Appearances
2 SEC Titles
3 BCS Bowls
2 Sugar Bowl wins
29-5 on the road in the SEC over 8+ seasons
85-23 record over 8 seasons – 79% winning percentage
No Probations

Tony,
1. Greg Landry will not only start but play every snap. Bradford on the road at Miami coming off an injury is the wrong time. OU will beat Miami at home without Bradford.
2. I believe that LSU does want to unleash Shepard, every top program in America has a “difference maker” that they would love to unleash; problem is if the team has not already established a consistent game plan and implementation of that plan it usually does not come to fruition. If it does, it is the acception and not the “rule”; especially on the road in the SEC.
3. GT is facing a team that understands the spread option philosophy, look for a lot of busted plays and a few big plays. Nesbitt and Company may have a lot of turnovers this week.

Another high scoring Dawg victory. LSU & UGA stake claim to #3 in SEC.

College Football is becoming like basketball….most games are decided by match-ups between the 2 teams. Miss. State looks to be a bad match up for the Bugs. MSU’s problem is the same as UNC…poor QB play is their albatross.

Satan will not allow Bama to have a let down against Kentucky. Close early, turns into a butt whuppin’.

Stoops would rather Bradford play Sooner than Later. Jacory Harris looked like Tom Brady against Tech, but looked like Marcia Brady against Va. Tech. Who will he be this weekend? This game could go either way, but take the Sooners.

Awbarn vs Tennysee….can they both lose? Is Awbarn really as good as they have looked so far? Will Tennysee ever play as well in another game as they played against the Gaytors? Both teams make the other look bad…or good, who knows?

If you could take Awbarn’s stretch limo, put Kiffin’s wife in it, and go on a Road Trip to a REAL college football game, say in Athens this weekend…that would make for a heavenly weekend.

LSU is not the #4 team in the country. UGA will win this one by a score or 2.

BAMA will probably do the same to UK as they have done to Arky. D is too strong and O is very balanced and rolling right now.

As much as I despise AU, I think they will beat UT pretty handily this weekend. AU has a good offense and UT has no offense which will make it hard to score on the AU D. That said, i will be cheering for the Refs in this game.

Mikey- that’s a nice list you have there, but there’s a simpler way to put it. UGA’s talent dictates who wins the games. If Georgia has more talent than the other team, they will win. If the talent is equal or the other team has more, Georgia loses. Mark Richt has a great recruiting staff, but the coaching leaves a lot to be desired. That “road” record omits the losses in Jax, so that’s not nearly as impressive.

What hurts is a cow chip nacho masquerading as somebody. Talk about a fraud.
LSU is obviously over rated and I hardly think Leslie has the smarts to achieve what you’re giving him credit for. If they suck without a green freshman, they’ll suck with him. Josh Nesbitt is a liability every time he throws the ball. Jacory Harris stuck his foot in his mouth when he said he refused to lose. Tim “JC” Tebow said the same thing right before Auburn beat UF for the second time in a row. This weekend, Auburn proves that it really doesn’t matter what Lane Kiffin says during the week. Auburn will be the best non ranked 5-0 team in the country. WDE!!!

Five soothing answers to your burning questions:

1. Is LSU going to finally take the wraps off Russell Shepard?

Les Miles is going one better. He’s gonna unwrap his Mark Richt voodoo doll. Unfortunately, even that isn’t going to help the hapless Bengals in this Dawgfight.

2. Can Josh Nesbitt bounce back after last week’s pounding?

My prediction: Josh Nesbitt will bounce back every time he encounters the MSU defensive line.

3. Will Alabama have a letdown at Kentucky?

Yes. But it will not matter. Kentucky had their letdown last Saturday. They will be looking for redemption as they play well over their heads in this game — but they will not find it.

4. How will the quarterbacks play in the Oklahoma-Miami game?

It really doesn’t matter how the QB’s play. This game will be won at the line of scrimmage. Miami has already been exposed as nothing more than a gimmick offense that can light up the scoreboard when they face a weak defense. Oklahoma doesn’t have a championship caliber defense, but it will be adequate to take the wind out of these Miami Hurricanes.

5. Can Auburn work its magic on the road?

Location means nothing in this game. Auburn’s ‘magic’ is not unlike that of Miami. High flying offenses crash and burn when they encounter mediocre defenses. The Vols defense is slightly better than mediocre. This game marks the end of Gene Chizik’s honeymoon. At least he should be able to find some quality moonshine on Ol’ Rocky Top to take the edge off of the beat-down. I look for Auburn to play the Vols close early, but when their ‘ones’ go to the bench, then their ‘threes’ take the field. Auburn doesn’t have any ‘twos’. Lack of depth will prevent the Tigers from taking advantage of Tennessee’s ‘inCrompetence’.

This is an absolute “MUST WIN” game for Les Miles.

In 2007, LSU went 10-2 regular season. In 2008, LSU went 7-5 regular season. Les Miles was already on the hot seat at the end of 2008.

Reamaining LSU schedule includes:
Florida, Auburn, Alabama, Ole Miss, and Ark.

LSU has very low odds against Florida or Bama.
Long odds against beating AU. More even odds vs. Ole Miss & Ark.

Consider how bad LSU looked vs. MissSt, as compared to how Auburn DESTROYED MissSt.

LSU probably escapes with a narrow win.

“The last I heard from your type was that UGA bet you becuase Tebow had a sore shoulder.”

- No actually the last you actually heard from a Gator fan was the goodbye song as you filed out of the stadium after the 3rd quarter.

“UGA has a great program, period. UF now has a great program.”

- Nice try with the backhanded compliment. It’s been 20 years. There’s no “now UF has a great program”. That’s like claiming UGA has a ‘recent’ national title. Are Clemson, BYU, Georgia Tech, Colorado, and Washington great programs as well? That’s the list of programs you mutts probably look down on even though they’ve actually won a Nat’l title since 1980. The LSU game looks bad to me. LSU’s secondary is pretty good, and they have a nose for interceptions. Our run offense has not been what we anticipated all season. We’re going to have to be very careful working the ball down the field in the air. Turnovers will kill us in a game like this.

Fortunately, their offense doesn’t look all that good. If our defense steps up and plays big then I would bet on a low-scoring nailbiter. Then again, you never know with these teams.

Shepard’s yards per carry are pretty good. He’s just not getting that many touches. That will certainly change as the season progresses and he learns the position.

I also wouldn’t make too much of LSU’s ugly win at Miss St. Getting up for a game in Starkville isn’t all that easy. Like Georgia, they’re a team that hasn’t yet played to their talent level. But have no doubt, they will be motivated for their trip to Athens.

Hang on to your hats! The goal for these next two weeks is survival. Honestly, I’ll be happy if we take one of the two. At least we’ll head to Jacksonville with the division lead on the line.

Mutt idiot, sorry your own words convicted you. Apparently UF only has had a team for the last 19 years. So I guess that only since the infusion of illegalities of the Pell and company, Hall etc did UF develop a program. Let’s say it right then. UF is the only SEC school to have a conference title removed for cheating. So why don’t you take real compliments instead of trying to make yourself look better by putting down someone else. Liek I said, UF does now have a great program. Before the last 20 years, not much to do except cheat.

If MSU holds GT to ONLY 300 yards rushing, then they have come a long ways. Last year GT nearly rushed for 500 yards and that’s when Nesbitt was out and Jaybo was running the show.

Also, MSU gave up over 300 yards rushing to Auburn, who’s running game is similar to GT’s in concept. The only thing that worries me about this game is that MSU actually has some offense this year so GT’s possessions will be limited unlike last year when we always had the ball because MSU went 3 and out every time.

1. We have been living a relatively charmed life to be minus 9 in turnover ratio and still post a 3-1 record. We turn it over 3 times on Saturday, and our luck runs out…I don’t care how overrated we think LSU is. We hang on to the ball, we should win this one at home, even if LSU “unleashes” their talented freshman.

2. I would think the QB having 32 carries in this offense means either the defense took away the dive and pitch, or the QB just didn’t read the option correctly. Not an expert, so I don’t know. No way he can carry that many two weeks in a row, so I think you will see Dwyer, Jones, Allen, etc, have more opportunities. Didn’t MSU give up 390 yards rushing to Auburn?

3. For my money, Alabama is the best team in the country. No let down in the Bluegrass state this weekend…they just have way too much talent for UK.

4. I doubt seriously if Stoops plays Bradford on the road against the ‘Canes for his first start since the injury. Was Miami exposed, or did they run into a Hokie team at home, in Lane Stadium, that was feeling disrespected (underdog at home)? I think it’s the latter. I think Miami wins and Harris bounces back with a big game.

5. I will be very interested to see how Auburn performs outside the friendly confines of Jordan-Hare. This is a MUST win game for Kiffin, at home, at night, national television…a loss may tilt the season completely in the wrong direction. I think Auburn wins….UT still has no QB, and that ultimately will be their downfall in most games they play.

By the way thanks SimpleDawg for the visual of Layla Kiffin in a stretch limo…needed something to get the blood flowing this morning and that did the trick.

Auburn wins nailbiter against Ball State

Big Tone,

I don’t worry about this freshman rb for LSU. He will NOT be a factor. Our problem will come from the qb who can throw and run which always gives Sweet Willie fits because we tend to have tackling & assignment problems from time to time. I think this will be one of these games which will be decided by who has the ball last. Also, if we pooch kick it every time we score we will be defeated. Kick the ball in the damn endzone CMR! Coach Fab is an idiot!

Go dawgs, I will be behind you win or lose.

the jealous anger against the dawgs on here is pathetic. Richts 02 season (one loss) and the 07 season (2 losses) were both as good as LSU’s “national titles” we just didnt have the right teams lose. UF’s 2 titles were not any better than Georgia’s 02 season either. Again UF backed into it and had the right teams lose.

Georgia still owns the series vs Florida and tech is still considered a little step brother.

Funny…

“So why don’t you take real compliments instead of trying to make yourself look better by putting down someone else”

In the same paragraph as…

“UF is the only SEC school to have a conference title removed for cheating….Before the last 20 years, not much to do except cheat.”

“Sorry your own words convicted you.”

Not to mention 2 posts later at 9:50, D-Dawg, made my point for me…

“Florida’s had a few fluke, lucky years with Tebow and Meyer—when they leave, florida will be back to the zook years and the Dawgs will take over the SEC again.”

What happened before the Zook years? Are those stricken from the record?
How many other teams lucked into fluke multiple NC’s this decade?
Exactly how/when do you expect the pups to “take over the SEC again”?
How frustrating is it to have to wait until someone leaves as opposed to just beating them? Isn’t this what you roasted UF fans for saying during the Walker years? Funny how it’s OK if you’re doing it.

Isnt funny how everyone is not #1(SEC) always flies around like little gnats trying to find a way in.. no matter what cherry-picked example you find to argue the SEC is not #1 in football, just simple failure.. get over it

There are some crystal balls and record books that beg to differ.

Speaking of ‘02, remind me which terrible excuse for program put out a horrible team with a totally pathetic coach that you’re blaming for not getting your NC?

Robodawg,

You are wrong my friend. The “G” logo was originally designed by a Green Bay Packers worker. Vince Dooley liked the logo & used it a few years later.

But it is still the best logo and looks better than the Packers.

I didnt blame anyone for losing one game that season. 13-1 and a sugar bowl win is what it is. Florida was 13-1 and 13-1 with BCS bowl wins. Again, same record, same conference, the uncontrollable factor is if other teams also lose to let you have an official shot at the title. It worked out for UF and not for UGA. so what. The best season this decade is by Auburn 14-0 and they didnt get a shot at it either.

The SEC is #1 – they’ve got the 2 best teams in the country. Other than that, they are pretty average. Its really hard to tell given all of the cupcake games played by SEC teams thus far. Thats all I’m saying…

Georgia,

Since you’re so concerned with history and since of course I think football was created in 1990, I asked a friend to look up some history for me.

He confirmed what I feared. UGA truly has dominated Florida (and I guess by extension the SEC). You only have to go back to the 1935 for UGA to be .500 against the….what are they called again ‘gaytors’. You know, back when there were wooden nickels, gas was like 35 cents, and there was some mean guy stirring trouble over in Europe.

I’m so glad I got my facts straight.

How quickly we fans forget: every college football season is a one-week series of revelations and surprises. This week is a great example of that principle in action —- there will be revelations galore.

LSU vs UGA? I really don’t know. LSU is 4-0; UGA is 3-1. Both have won close games that were closer than predicted. LSU is undefeated, but looks vulnerable. This game is the first of several that will sort the 3rd through 5th spots in the SEC.

Nesbitt? He may be a warrior, but Georgia Tech desperately needs a passing a game alternative to its triple-option running attack. Good defenses with fast, athletic players have stuffed the box against Tech and dared the Jackets to throw. So far it’s worked more often than not.

Alabama vs Kentucky? Character game for the Tide; the Wildcats usually play the Tide well. Alabama starts slow, and rolls by the beginning of the 4th quarter.

I feel for Sam Bradford. From Heisman-winner and national title contender to injured bench warmer. Miami is seeking its redemption from recent mediocrity. Oklahoma needs to get its offensive line replacements to look like the graduates and draftees they replaced after last season. This game turns on the motivation of Miami’s young defensive athletes vs. Oklahoma’s offensive line, regardless of who starts at QB for the Sooners.

Auburn vs. Tennessee? This game is about the future. Sure, a win will deliver a certain amount of respectability in the here and now, but both of these teams need competitive wins in the middle ranks of the SEC to continue to recruit and rebuild. With Crompton at QB for the Volunteers, my money is on the Tigers and their functional offense.

Sorry Barners. Nobody is going to roll on a Monte Kiffin D. He wasn’t top ten in the NFL every year because it was a fluke. It’ll be close but Auburn’s offense will not roll up their numbers they have in prior games on O. Giving up 30 to Ball St., if you let a high school score 30 at home what in the world do you think that spells on the road? Smells like a ton of yards….

Tony,
Do you really think Les Miles is such a great coach that he will keep his offense under wraps for four games, depend on the defense to come up with two scores and a goal line stand to beat Miss St by four? So now he is going to “unleash a freshman qb” on poor unsuspecting Georgia. And I guess they have been saving Chris Scott (30 yards) for WM this week. We will find out Sat afternoon whether or not you are the real Mr. CFB.

p.s.How can UGA be a one point underdog to Arkansas and a 3 point favorite over the #4 team in the country? Maybe Vegas doesn’t know about the “unleashing”.

The question in my mind is

Which game day this year or next will Caleb King grab the headlines by announcing his transfer to Georgia Southern or Jacksonville State and when will he transfer from there to Georgia State and how many professional team’s practice squads will he play on before we read the headlines that he starts his coaching career at Greater Atlanta Christian and how long will he be there before he takes another and another and another lateral coaching job before he launches his pop warner coaching career and shops his kid from town to town to town so we can read about it all over again.
