Nobody asked me but:
1. Logically, there is no way Georgia should be 3-1: I believe that turnover margin is the most important statistic in football. Turnover margin is the number of turnovers you have created compared to the number that you have given up. Good teams are almost always in the plus territory in turnover margin. Through four games, Georgia is minus-9 in turnover margin (12 giveaways versus 3 takeaways). Georgia is also 115th nationally in penalties with 41 in four games.
Coach Mark Richt told me on Tuesday that he was confident that his Bulldogs could turn those stats around. “The important thing to know about stats like that is what happens in the past does not matter,” Richt said. “What matters is what happens on Saturday against LSU.” He’s right. If Georgia keeps its turnovers to two or fewer, I think the Bulldogs have a very good chance to win. If they stick to their average of three turnovers and 10 penalties per game, they won’t.
2. Florida can beat LSU without Tebow: Everybody seems to have an opinion on whether or not Tim Tebow should play on Oct. 10 against LSU. Concussions are a tricky thing, to be sure. And there are people who seem to believe that there will be pressure to put Tebow back into action before it is safe to do so. If you know the Florida medical staff, you know that is not going to happen. If you know Tebow’s dad, Bob, you know that is not going to happen. If you know Urban Meyer and his relationship with the Tebows, you know that it is not going to happen. How about this? Instead of worrying what Florida is going to do with Tebow, let’s talk about whether or not the Gators can win in Baton Rouge without him. The answer is yes. I’ll explain next week but know that it has to do with defense.
3. Florida State has to win at Boston College: Here is a great stat from Corey Clark of the Tallahassee Democrat. In 2005 Florida State was ranked No. 4 in the nation when it was upset by unranked Virginia. Since then Florida State has played 48 games against Division I-A competition. In those games Florida State, which was once the most dominant program in college football, is 25-23. Here is another big stat from Corey: In its last 16 games against teams from the six BCS conferences (excluding Duke), Florida State is 5-11. That is staggering. A team at this level that almost loses to Jacksonville State and loses to a USF team with a brand new quarterback has big issues. It is an issue of focus. Coaches get paid to get their team ready to play. I have a great amount of respect and admiration for Bobby Bowden. But his team was not well coached last week.
4. Oklahoma has to win at Miami: Miami is a young, talented football team that got a lot of love after impressively beating Georgia Tech. Then Miami went on the road against a veteran Virginia Tech team and was exposed as a young team not quite ready for prime time. I expect them to bounce back and play well against Oklahoma. But it is Oklahoma that really has to win Saturday’s game at Miami. Because of its 14-13 loss to BYU on Sept. 5, the Sooners have absolutely no margin for error if they want to stay in the national championship race. Obviously Bob Stoops and company want to still be a factor when they face No. 2 Texas in Dallas on Oct. 17. If Oklahoma loses at Land Shark Stadium then the Sooners can only play the role of spoiler for Texas. They would hate to be in that position.
5. Ole Miss does not have a gimme at Vanderbilt: Ole Miss was knocked out of the No. 4 ranking last week with a loss to South Carolina. But the Rebels will still win the SEC West if they run the table. They have Alabama coming to Oxford on Oct. 10, Arkansas on Oct. 24, Tennessee on Nov. 14 and LSU on Nov. 21. So the schedule is set up for Ole Miss to make a nice run. But there is a problem. Vanderbilt tends to play Ole Miss tough. In fact, the Commodores beat the Rebels last season in Oxford. If Ole Miss gets caught looking ahead to Alabama, the Rebels could be out of the SEC West race by the first Saturday in October.

Tony,
The ACC was 6-4 vs. the SEC last year.
We need a 128 team playoff just like basketball.
Tech will beat UConn in the ACC Championship game.

All the talk about Tebow gets old. I glad this is his last year in college football. However, with a concussion is a serious issue that could affect his life afterwards. Steve Young was only one or two hits away from not being an ESPN sportscaster.
Meyer needs to see if his next star quarterback can play in the big league. At least he has two weeks to prepare.
BTW…Saint Slim-mons needs to get a life!!

Glad to hear Tebow is better but gotta admit I was amused at the Urbanators remarks about “class” that KY and Rich Brooks displayed after the incident.
Class, as in what you haven’t dislayed in having your QB in Throwing up by 4+ TD’s or the 60+ beatdown from the prevoius year you administered to KY (probably throwing late in the 4th qtr.).
Hopefully lessons on “class” will be learned by his highness Urban.
Thank you Rich Brooks for proving there is someone in the SEC that does have class.

Georgia is 3-1 because of 6-4 Green. Not Samuel, Cox, King, OL, CWM…Green. Cox heaves, Green catches. It’s a case of the Randy Moss Enigma for the rest of the SEC.

Apparently, m has recently suffered a stroke.
In other news, it’s also amazing that were it not for a bogus roughness penalty called against Rashad Jones in the OK St. game, Georgia could very well be sitting on 4-0 right now despite the turnovers and penalties. If that doesn’t speak to the level of talent that we have in this program then I don’t know what does. Given that, the fact that they can’t put all phases of the game together and legitimately expect to challenge UF and Bama for SEC supremacy is a tad maddening.

Is anyone else here fed up with hearing Mark Richt talk about how he thinks the guys can turn around the undisciplined play, penalties, and foolish mistakes? We’ve been hearing this song and dance for several years now. After 3 years of this nonsense, what is going to get it turned around at this point? Oh yeah. I know. How about a coach with some fire and moxie, a la Saban and Urban? Instead, Richt coddles these guys and reads them bible verses rather than making them run steps. What a joke.

Carolina and ASU could of gone either way. Yes, we won, But are we not a lot better than these guys.
I will take ugly wins every week, but turning the ball over 3-4 times a game and giving up 450+ yards a game will not bode well in the coming weeks. I fear for the wrath coming. Hell, we’re winning and most are coming unglued.

3. Florida State has to win at Boston College
Translation: Damn it Bobby. I’ve been telling EVERYONE that FSU is BACK, and you’re making me look like a jackazz.
4. Oklahoma has to win at Miami
Translation: I cant afford to have the Big 12 look bad to an ACC team. Afterall, I’m voting for another BCS NC (Bowl cartel System) match-up of Florida & Texas. Oklahoma losing to the U would REALLY mess up my BCS Fantasy Football league.
5. Ole Miss does not have a gimme at Vanderbilt

Turnovers are huge in this game. I don’t think LSU can hang with UGA unless the D causes a couple of turnovers. So far this year, LSU has only turned the ball over 3 times while causing 10. If this trend continues, LSU should walk out of Athens with a win. Remember, the difference last year were the two Jarrett Lee pick-6’s.
As for Tebow playing against LSU in 2 weeks. Well, that’s a long ways away.

Big Tone, good blog about our dawgs. How we are 3-1 is amazing. Perhaps a miracle. Our turnover situation is so bad let me tell you how the crowd reacted to Rambo’s INT last Sat night. Do you remember the Movie “The Bad News Bears”? When Ahmad made the catch in right field, looked up into his glove and the ball was there somehow. That’s how the crowd reacted when we got that INT. The crowd was shocked when we came up with it.
Does anyone know what our turnover margin has been since the beginning of the 08′ season? This problem seems like it has been going on for awhile now.
Finally, You don’t have to worry about me picking a UGA team to trounce their opponent this Sat as I have every week. I don’t know what to think about this coaching staff at the moment.

Mr. TB, even if GA has no TO’s they’ll have a tough time winning against LSU. For GA to win, CWM needs to keep a man on Jefferson at all times and do what Miss St did on def to stop the run then take your chances your DB’s will make plays against LSU’s taller receivers. GA has to have a complete game on both sides of the ball. It’ll be up to the GA def to win this game because I don’t see the dawgs scoring too many points w/our running game sputtering along and Joe’s going to have a tough time completing passes against LSU pressure and tall fast DB’s.
The table has to turn in this game for UGA. For once let their opponent have (more) TO’s in enemy territory and special teams have to shine. Sound like a perfect game for UGA? It has to be for the dawgs to win.

The Dawgs have most assuredly staggered through the first third of the season. 3 turnovers and 10 penalties per game is a recipe for disaster, and an indication of poor discipline, poor coaching, and/or poor evaluation of talent – recruiting or playing status. Georgia should have beaten all 4 of their opponents to date, but instead, almost lost all 3. Normally – given the circumstances in which they won, I’d say their winning 3 out of 4 is a sign of mental toughness, but I’m not so sure that the primary perception shouldn’t be that someone had to lose…and the opposing teams were more inept in their efforts than the Dawgs.
Having said that, I still believe that there is sufficient talent at Georgia to match up with the other teams on their schedule, but the question still remains…can the Dawgs learn from their mistakes and eliminate the turnovers and penalties?
The Urbane Crier is about to have a hissy-fit over the injury to Tebow and it’s impact on his coronation as the Best College Football Coach Alive by derailing Florida’s run to the National Championship. The lick Tebow received in the Kentucky game was as violent a blow as I’ve seen in a long time….don’t be surprised if misses a month or more. LSU wins against the Gators…regardless of the outcome in Athens.
FSU will remain a second tier program as long as Bobby Bowden is the coach. They can no longer attract the best talent with the retirement watch hanging over the program.
Oklahoma and Miami will be an interesting contest. Who is a real contender, and who is the pretender?
Bradford’s injury, and subsequent loss of playing time, is equal to the loss of Tebow at Florida. The loss of skill is one thing, but the loss of the aura of invincibility is much greater.
Ole Miss may have received the Goliathian rock’s blow from David’s sling in losing to USC-East, especially in the manner in which they lost. Their potent offense was shackled, and their highly hyped QB was made to look like a wide-eyed freshman. They still should beat Vandy, but not by much.
If Clempson loses at Maryland this weekend, the orange tide of despair will engulf the program, and overwhelm all of the good things Dabo Swinney has done there. The Clempson people still believe they should be a dominating force on the college football landscape…as it was back in the 1980’s. Danny Ford is gone, and he ain’t coming back.
As for Tech, if UNC had had a QB who could hit a wide open receiver at least half of the time, the Techmites would have been down by 14 points at the half. I guess the Tar Holes’ woes made Tech’s players smarter.

Patrick Peterson has been preparing all offseason for 2 specific matchups. THe first comes this weekend against AJ Green. Peterson is huge! Probably the biggest CB Green will go up agsinst before he plays on Sundays. It’ll be interesting to see how the two sophomores do against each other and it’ll be interesting to see if Cox is brave enough to throw that way. Green had the upper hand last year, I think we’ll see a different story this year. Also, Chad Jones has come around in his pass coverage but can still be beat. Against the run though, you are not running through or past him.

The thing that is most concerning about the turnovers and penalties is all we heard FROM THE COACHES during the spring and summer is how they were working to correct them and the result is the Dawgs are tracking to actually be WORSE than last season. How is this possible?! Whatever “punishment” they are giving is obviously not effective and both things seem to be a result of a lack of both discipline and focus. Something has to change or it’s going to be a long season. I also find it interesting that of the 12 turnovers 2 players are responsible for over half of them Cox(5) & Samuel (2).
As for Tebow I’d be surprised if he plays next week. Not only did he suffer a major concussion last week, but if you go back and look at a replay of UF v Tenn, he had to have suffered a mild concussion after the collision with E.Berry. They were talking about it on sports talk here in Jax how he was definitely glassy-eyed and dazed after that hit.
Your noodle is nothing to play with. I do agree that they can beat LSU without him and if I’m Meyer with 2 weeks to prepare I get Brantley ready to play.
The Miami v Oklahoma game will be interesting to watch. Did Miami go into Blacksburg over confident or are they an average team that caught GT on a bad day? How sharp will Bradford be?

TB obviously someone is dropping the ball off the field as much as UGA is dropping it ON the field. The turnovers and penalties are a lack of discipline and focus. And while discipline may be the unpopular route for a coach to take, it’s also a necessary one. It’s great to be a player’s coach, but at some point there have to be consequences for actions. The penalties and turnovers are simply unacceptable… but also inexplicably unpunished (we have been talking UGA penalties since last season). At some point you have to challenge your team and make someone an example. And if the coaches aren’t doing it, the team leaders have to. If this doesn’t happen, we will be talking about the same problems for the rest of this year and the forseeable future.

Gator Nation- Charlie Strong SHOULD be a head coach but he has two things going against him
1. He’s a defensive coach and the trend lately for most teams that need a new HC is to hire a strong OC vs a strong DC.
2. As long as he’s looking for a job in the south he’s going to be hard pressed to get one since he has a white wife. I’m not trying to start a race debate so please don’t take it that way, and things are DEFINITELY a LOT better regarding race relations in the south, but it is something that will handicap him when most major boosters are older white men that still frown upon those types of relationships. And that’s simply a reality. His best shot is to look for a job in either the West, Midwest or up North where it’s not that big of a deal. It’s okay to be a coordinator, but a head coach is the face of a program and I’m sorry there simply aren’t many schools in the south that are ready for the face of their program to be an african-american, much less one with a white wife. People may get upset or disagree with this statement, but like it or not it’s the truth.
Don’t believe that ask yourself this, How is it Meyer is able to succesfully lobby for Dan Mullen who has been in the SEC for litterally a minute to get one, but he has been unable to get Strong a serious look? Meyer himself has said on more than one occassion that he’s perplexed that a coach with Strong’s proven track record doesn’t get more looks.

I’ll say one thing about UF/LSU next week. Les Miles, John Chavis, and most of the LSU team have been preparing for Tebow for 3 years now. We all know what he can and cannot do. UF will run the same offense with or without Tebow. The only difference now is that LSU may be able to free up the spy guy as Brantley is not the proven running threat that Tebow is. All in all though, not much will change with how LSU approaches UF, NEXT WEEK.
Back to UGA/LSU. I really hope UGA stacks the box on Saturday. JJ is getting comfortable making all the throws now. If UGA sells out to stop the run, JJ will hit LaFell, Tolliver, Randle, Williams, Holliday, Shepard, or any other reciever that is out there for a big gain. LaFell and Tolliver have already shown they can take a short quick pass and turn it into a long gain.
IF (hypothetical) UGA is off and LSU is clicking, this could be a long game for the dogs. I expect both teams to be ready though with good game plans.

We do need a 16 team playoff….we need it now…..conference champs and at large teams chosen by computer…no human opinions allowed.
Tony, the reason it is amazing that ugag is 3-1 is not their turnover margin…it is the fact that they could win ANY games with the crappy team they have. It is going to be an old timey arse whipping when Tech and Paul Johnson gets hold of them.

3. Welcome back “Saint Simons”!! We missed your ‘insightful’ blogs. Thought maybe you’d gotten caught up in a “Hurricane” or something down there.

Georgia was a heavy penalized team last season. What happens in the past DOES matter if you refuse to learn from your mistakes. This penalty thing is a continual problem with Georgia.

Did you bow to the pressure of the haters and put out a column with a negative spin on UGA, Tony?
1.) These are the same issues we’ve been going over with UGA since week # 1. Nothing has been corrected, so I am assuming it stays the same this week, and UGA will finally face an opponent that makes one pay dearly for mistakes like these. Hoping for the “W”, but the realist in me says UGA can’t get the job done.
2.) Florida could win all of them without Tebow. Defense wins titles, and Offense sells tickets. A fact that seems lost on the UGA coaching staff.
3.) Boston College, with the possible exception of Duke, is looking like the worst team in the ACC right now. FSU wins easily, and the grumbling stops for a few days in Tallahassee…..Or at least it stops until they play GT and get the crap beat out of them.
4.) OU will win against the “U”. I’m just not convinced that Miami is back. They played an FSU team that isn’t real good, and a GT team that obviously needs to work on their defense. As soon as they played a team that has both O & D, they got their thug butts handed to them.
5.) It’s Ole Miss, man. Overrated, and had absolutely NO business being ranked in the top-5. However, it’s also Vandy they are about to play. Ole Miss wins.

I’m starting to worry more about BoBo than Willie. He is so darn predictable and seems like he wont change his game plan mid stream if its not working…. I’d like to see more 8-15 yard passes combined with the run to make long clock eating drives ending up in points.
Seems like every pass is either behind the line of scrimmage or 25 yards or more….

Yes my mighty Gators can win at LSU without Tebow. The questions is, can they win at LSU without Dan Mullen?
The preverbial “elephant in the room” is Adazio’s offense (against SEC div I teams this year) has relied WAY too much on Tim pulling it down and just making it happen. and ergo? Tebow Out with Concussion. and don’t blame recievers, these sets and plays are simply NOT up to the level that Mullen had running like a well-oiled machine, REGARDLESS of personnel.

m, sorry buddy you are incoherent. You’ve already missed your predictions so go back to your tech blog, if you can find one.
Dogs are well coached, young, and tough. They are more talented than LSU, and everyone else they play this year, but they are less experience. Dogs will beat LSU if they can move the ball on long methodical drives. The fact that they are —— the world in turnover margin and still finding a way to win is a credit to the talent and coaching. The fact that they are so penalized is a credit to youth and inexpereince. Live by the sword, die by the sword. We will see how the fair this weekend, but it is amazing that they ar not 4-0
Tebow will be there, so it doesn’t matter. Much ado about nothing. The question is will UF beat LSU?
FSU wins easy
Ok wins easy
UM wins easy
ACC= less than mediocrity. The ACC is losing to William and Mary, Wyoming, and little sisters of the poor? 16 game playoff will not work because some of the “major conferences” are not worthy of playing some of the others. Look what happened to GT agains LSU last year. 2nd in the ACC vs 5th in the SEC

So Tony, where did you and your colleagues that vote in the polls place UGA? Your comments suggest UGA should not be rated ahead of many other 3-1 teams that don’t have turnover/penalty/defense issues. Just more proof that UGA continues to be overrated.

Wow, all of this sudden “concern” from some of these rival fans about Tim Tebow’s health and well being. How very touching. Why, you would never know that many of these same “concerned” fans were calling him gay and “Teblow” and all kinds of other names and making fun of his faith and him being a virgin etc etc etc just a week ago!! Now suddenly, they have found compassion. My advice to many of you “concerned” individuals…worry about your own team and don’t come on here spewing crap, just state your real agenda, whether you’d love to see hin NOT play or whether you’re just trying to be critical of Urban Meyer. We don’t need your “crocodile tears”. And for those who TRULY care about Tim’s condition, God bless you and be assured that the University of Florida will not play the young man unless he is COMPLETELY medically cleared and safe and ready to go…

It’s quite dumb and pathetic for anyone to question Tebow playing in the middle of the 3rd quarter up 31-7. A 24 point lead can evapoarte very quickly NO MATTER who you are or who you are playing. In 1994 UF was up 31-3 on FSU in the 4th quarter and FSU came back and tied the game 31-31 which was the final score. Granted UK isn’t FSU of the 90’s but a 24 lead can change quickly in any game.
Besides UF’s offense has started slow, again, this year and really needs all the playing time they can get to get in sync before the meat of their schedule.
In today’s college football world all it takes is one loss and poof your National Title hopes are done in an instant. It’s not the coaches job to worry about keeping the score respectable for the other teams sake, its their job to make sure their team is ready to play and as finely tuned as possible.
Some of you should get a grip with your jealousy of Meyer/UF/Tebow and stop looking for any stupid reason to chastise a team that obviously knows a lot more about what their doing than yours does.

As a Gator Fan, I hope Tebow can play against LSU, but wonder how effective he’ll be. Even if he is 100% from a medical perspective, will he still go head on with the LSU defenders? On another note for UGA 3-1 is 3-1 who cares how you got there. Every team has weaknesses. UGA has managed to overcome them. I think this team has a lot of heart and character – but just my 2 cents…..

This lifetime Gator fan wants to ask you the qeustion; The same DC Charlie Strong under Ron Zook? Who had Miami run ALL over his defense like a track meet at the 2004 Peachbowl? That Charlie Strong? The DC Charlie Strong at South Carolina which almost every opposing offense cut through like a knife through butter and who’s defense eventually became nationally ranked under…that bastion of Defensive emphasis STEVE SPURRIER?
The Charle Strong that actually kept his job as a “co-DC” when Meyer came in, solely for the exact same PC reasons everyone is bending over backwards to get this guy interviews all over NCAA DivI?
Look, this guy HAS interviewed for MULTIPLE open HC jobs to no avail and they best you guys can come up with is because he has white wife? Your nuts.
How about the fact that he is NOT all that as a prospective head football coach compared to the market that is out there?
Apparantly, University AD’s and President’s, black and white, are not that impressed with Mr. Strong.

Bill E. Goat– I’m not here to debate one way or the other but I read a stat that said, Meyer has never lost a game when leading by more than 10 at the half. (LSU in ‘07 was a 10 point lead exactly so I guess that doesn’t count). I personally don’t think about pulling players until the 4th quarter.

Ok so I read these blogs almost everyday and I’ve noticed a few things.
1. Yes, TB is a homer along with many other writers. They write a lot about UGA and less about Tech. But they are homers nonetheless. It’s not necessary to point out that a local newspaper writes with a slant. Especially in a BLOG….about SPORTS…Stop stating the obvious.
2. Tech fans (some not all..and probably not a representative of the whole) would rather degrade UGA and it’s fans than talk football. For those Tech fans who are saying it goes both ways, reread the article, not one mention of Tech. You came here, you started it, now be quiet and go play with your own toys if you can’t play nice. It’s old. Grow up. Everyone.

The reason FSU didnt win more championships was due to undisciplined play. A fundamental Tennessee and OU team(s) beat FSU. I worried tha CMR would bring this to UGA, and he proved5 me wrong the first 5 years. Now, we look just like FSU did. Problem is, we are not in the ACC, its the SEC and BAMA and UF have just as much talent as we do, only they are disciplined.

The Other St. Simons, you are correct. CMR sounds more like a politician than a hard nosed football coach. I think he knows he will have to replace Martinez, and he is showing the coaching world that if you come to UGA, he wont sell you out on a national stage. However, his political responses have put him in a position….if he keeps CWM and there is not great improvement, CMR will be terminated eventually

Matt,
I understand your point and I know the game wasn’t in jeopardy of being lost when Tebow got hurt but all it takes is a couple of weird bounces of the football and a stat like that suddenly has a 1 in the loss column. Midway through the 4th quarter up 31-7 and yeah the lead should be safe but midway through 3rd is a lot of football game left.

Dawg fans, you better start worrying—LSU is a lot better than these creampuff teams you’ve played so far. The Tigers are on the way to the BCS baby–first beat georgia this week and florida next week—-LSU goes to #2, then beat Alabama in a few weeks to get to #1 baby!!!! Finish it off by another win over florida in the SEC title game. LSU 37 Ga 24—mark it down!!!

Richt is the problem. I really do not understand this man. He’s emotionless in a sport built upon emotion. He hired Bobo and Martinez. Both are poor coordinators. As to the turnovers and penalties, if there is no punishment, there is no fear. Playing time is to die for. Ask anyone whoever played the game. Take it away and maybe this shabby crew will shape up. If not, le deluge! Despite the fact of all the talk about correcting the problems in the off season, that has not taken place and we’ve played the lighter part of our schedule. EXIT RICHT! He is far less than meets the eye. It is time for a change. When will the powers that be at UGA recognize that we’re a middling program in a player-rich state and region. Why? Because these guys can’t coach! That’s the long and short of it.
Not buying it.
