The Fearless Friday Forecast

Your Fearless Friday Forecaster went 8-2 last week because:

**–He didn’t believe that Florida State, which almost lost to Jacksonville State, could go on the road and beat BYU, which had beaten Oklahoma. Speed, baby, speed. FSU has speed.

**–He didn’t believe it was possible for USC, after winning a dramatic game at Ohio State, could lose to an unranked Pac-10 team for the fourth straight year. Oops.

He did think Georgia could beat Arkansas but he never believed that two SEC teams could be so bad on defense.

Nevertheless, your humble prognosticator stands at 20-7 after three weeks and is back for more punishment.

Let’s get on with the Forecast:

1. North Carolina at Georgia Tech: Everybody’s blaming Paul Johnson’s offense for last week’s struggle at Miami. I don’t think it’s the gun. It’s the guys who are shooting it. Right now they aren’t playing very smart. They probably need to be a little tougher, too. If Georgia Tech is going to have a good season, here is where the Jackets need to make a stand. Georgia Tech 21, North Carolina 20.

2. Arizona State at Georgia: Arizona State is 2-0 but the wins have come again Idaho State and Louisiana-Monroe. Georgia will come out flat after three straight tough games and this will be pretty ugly. But Joe Cox and A.J. Green save the day. Georgia 35, Arizona State 20.

3. Arkansas at Alabama: Remember how much time Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett had to throw last week against Georgia? Cut that time by more than half. Alabama 31, Arkansas 10.

4. Florida at Kentucky: The Gators played a little tight last week because of all the hoopla with Tennessee and Lane Kiffin. Now they relax and let their talent take over. Kentucky is better than a lot of people think. But not that good.  Florida 31, Kentucky 17.

5. LSU at Miss. State: LSU has won nine straight games against the Bulldogs, outscoring them 374-105 in the process. LSU starts opening up the playbook with Mississippi State, Georgia, and Florida coming up in the next three weeks. LSU 42, Miss. State 20.

6. Ohio at Tennessee: Tennessee quarterback Jonathan Crompton struggles in the big games (like Florida) but he is the model of efficiency against the Western Kentuckys and Ohios of the world. The Vols have a big game with Auburn next week and will use this outing to rebuild Crompton’s confidence. Tennessee 45, Ohio 9.

7. Ball State at Auburn: A year ago Ball State was one of the most explosive teams in the country with quarterback Nate Davis. But Davis is gone and so is Coach Brady Hoke. Now the Fighting David Lettermans (his alma mater) are 0-3 with a loss to New Hampshire. Auburn rolls to 4-0 and gets ready for a trip to Tennessee. Auburn 45, Ball State 10.

8. Miami at Virginia Tech: Right now Miami has the most impressive body of work with wins over Florida State and Georgia Tech. If the Hurricanes can win at Blacksburg, where they have lost in five of their last seven trips, they will vault in the rankings. ‘Canes win it with defense.  Miami 20, Virginia Tech 17.

9. TCU at Clemson: With losses by BYU and Utah last week, TCU (2-0) has a chance to be a BCS buster if it can run the table. The Horned Frogs have yet another great defense. I just think that Clemson has too many weapons with C.J. Spiller, Kyle Parker, and Jacoby Ford. Clemson 17, TCU 14.

10. Iowa at Penn State: Iowa beat Penn State last season and knocked the Nittany Lions out of a shot at the national championship. Penn State has not been tested in two games. Iowa (3-0) has gotten better since an early scare against Northern Iowa (17-16). I just can’t see Joe Pa losing this game at home. Penn State 21, Iowa 17.

Pretty good Tony. I do think Arkansas will score more than 10 points though & would not be surprised if TCU grinds it out over Dabo.

Mississippi did not even look like a Top 25 team last night. Rebs have some big time troubles on their OL.

The strange part about that is I don’t think last night was an upset. I thought Ole Miss would win, and I admit that was solely because of the ranking. Stupid me. Even Ole Miss’s TD looked like a high school play with the QB colliding with the RB. Ole Miss is an SEC also-ran. It’s UF, Bama, POSSIBLY LSU, and everybody else.
I’m surely not an ACC fan, but a few of those schools are starting to catch my eye. We’ll find out more about Clemson tomorrow and Miami looks awfully good, which makes FSU look better. I’ll keep a close eye on that Tech-UNC game tomorrow.

1. Another great ACC match up. Gets me excited about Duke Virginia!! Whooo! UNC wins by 4.

2. ASU covers but loses.

3. Ark covers

4. UK covers but the JORTS nation covers.

5. LSU at MSU and MSU covers. The Tigers don’t care because like everyone at that game they will just be glad to get out of Starkville. Is there a worse game day experience? It’s like going to Dekalb Memorial or an ACC football game.

6. Ohio at Tennessee Kiffin thinks that he’s playing OSU and not Ohio. He just hopes not to lose the game by 15 touchdowns, but they manage to win anyway.

7. Fighting Lettermans=Fighting Liberals=Cut and Run Pansies AU 326 Balled St 3

8. Miami at Va Tech- hard to make fun of this one. Looking forward to it. Va Tech covers and wins

9. TCU at Clempson- TCU wins. I mean can the ACC win an out of conference game that’s not against Upper Middle Kinda South Tennessee School For Deaf Lesbian Teachers?

10. Iowa at Penn St- Is this what the Conference that can’t count is hanging its hat on this week. I think I’ll check out the Mountain West. I actually remember when the Conference that can’t Count actually counted!! Who cares?

floriduh is barely better than a pitiful tennersee team.

A very very weak south caroliner team beats overrated ole miss and coulda shoulda beat a no defense georgy team

A weak georgy team plays a weak arkysaw team.

Does this mean that the Jevan Snead bandwagon has lost all it’s wheels?

I find it interesting that if JS has a bad night, announcers and writers just say he was off and it was “one of those nights.” Tebow does and it’s further proof as to why he’ll be an NFL flop.

Not sure if you guys agree, but he didn’t look good last night and didn’t appear to have that big of an arm. What do you think all his “best pro prospect in the SEC” rating is based on? Is it really the last 6 games of last season? Do the games at the beginning of the season not count?

For my money, Dexter McCluster is the best talent on that team. Followed closely by Greg Hardy when he cares. Those guys seemed to make players whenever the felt like it or their team needed them.

Bama is going to tee off on Arkansas, Ole Miss held SC down although they couldn’t score. Garcia stinks and GA made him look like a world beater. Mallett IS good but not THAT good.

Every week it will seem like GA gives up more points to a team than most others.

Why: Excuses….penalties, players out of position, no pash rush….all the responsibilty of the defense. Prove the fans wrong Willie and shut down Az State and come out guns blazing against LSU an TN.

As far as Jevan Snead he did not look good in that game last night. His arm did look big though when he over threw the receiver by 20 yards in the endzone. UGA would do well for themselves to put this one away by halftime. They need to show the country and themselves that they are capable of putting toegther a solid game. Arizona St at UGA: Arizona State ranks No. 1 in the nation in turnover margin, while Georgia ranks No. 116. The Sun Devils have lost no turnovers and gained eight; Georgia has lost nine and gained two.
Uhoh….. However, it might not be that simple. ASU hasn’t really played anyone and UGA has been playing very tough Div1 teams right out the gate (By the way, one of those teams just knocked off #4 Ole Miss last night). But heres the real kicker. I duno if anyone has followed the news lately, but it’s been raining in Georgia a lot lately. The forecast for Saturdays game is yet again, a lot of rain. How much do you think it rains out in Arizona? Dawgs win their first comfortable win of the year.

North Carolina at Georgia Tech: Tech has a QB that doesn’t have much of a passing game. NC has a pretty good D-line that blow up the outside pitch guys in Tech’s option game. This will take away a lot of Tech’s options on offense. NC wins or rather Tech loses until they show me they can throw the ball some.

Arkansas at Alabama: A lot of people think Bama will blow Ark out. Not so fast my friend! Arkansas has an NFL QB running the show and this team is for real. I think this will be a lot closer then the experts think and although I’m picking Bama, this has a lot of potential for an upset. We will find out a lot about Arkansas, Bama, and UGA from this game. But, at the end of the day Arkansas’s defense sucks and Bama should be able to put them away.

Florida at Kentucky: This game is intriguing. Florida didn’t really look unstoppable against UT last week. And this is at Kentucky. UK shouldn’t have the horses to keep up here, but this is one of those inter-conference SEC games that can get hairy. UF still is trying to get the ball rolling, but should win a close one. I’d like to know the spread on this one.

Miami at Virginia Tech: Miami is back as the darling of the media again. To their credit they do look pretty good and have beaten some quality teams. FSU seems to be for real, but GT doesn’t. On the other end Virginia Tech has been more battle tested then most teams in the nation. This one should be the game of the week. I’ll take Tech in an upset over Miami with the home field advantage and that they have seen better teams and games overall. Tech’s QB has been trying to develop his passing game. That’s nice. Here is where his wheels come out to play.

Iowa at Penn State: Iowa looked pretty rough in their first game against Northern Iowa (17-16). They since have woken up. PSU is a national title contender playing at home. I’ll take Joe Pa and the crowd despite Iowa having PSU’s number as of late.

Everyone bashing the Dawg’s defense really needs to take note of just how green the secondary is (age and experience-wise). Couple that with the D-line not getting consistent pressure on the backfield and you have a formula for giving up large chunks of yardage and points…..BUT, I really think there’s a good chance we’ll see good progression out this unit as the year goes on, as they gain real world experience/maturity….who know though…

Mr. CFB, give yourself some credit. You predicted that USC-UW would be a lot closer than expected, and you were right about that. Not many did even that, much less a straight upset.

I think you’re right about Tech bouncing back this week and the Dawgs winning ugly (oh, for a game that we could get our No.2 QB some reps — not to replace Cox, just to have a backup ready). I’m not sure Miami will be able to keep the ball rolling after some emotional wins and playing on the road against a frustrated Va. Tech facing a must-win game. Miami has picked up some needed signature wins for the program, but I’m not sure they’ve come that far just yet.

Coll football is going to be chaotic this year. Why? Because parity has finally rearded it’s ugly head. Any given Sat–or Thursday–a team can beat another. Look at last nights game for more confusion. Then you have fsu blowing out byu on the road. So would fsu manhandle Ok? Nope. You’re going to see a weird season. Teams win that you expected to lose and vice versa. This is going to be the year that breaks the BCS. It doesn’t mean things will change, but the fans will be irate. There will be 10 teams that have a legit reason to play in the NC game this year. Aside from a boise, who plays no one, there will NOT be any undefeated teams this year. It’s going to get messy and ugly by seasons end.

OK, can we stop saying so-and-so beat the #7 or whatever team in the nation? As has been proven, rankings mean ZERO right now. Wasn’t Vandy even ranked in the Top 15 last year? Gt beat Clemson, ATLnole…and Clemson is a good team.
DenverDog- I think you are right on target with all your picks, except one. I think Miami drops V-Tech. V-Tech does not have the offense to keep up and Miami will put points on the board.

No Miami passed all over GT. They did the same to you. And teams that are “real” aren’t losing to Jax State with 1 minute left in the game. Using your logic, Gt is for real since we dominated Jax state and you barely squeaked out a win. So gt isn’t for real. What happens IF they win their next 4 games, which includes your team? Don’t say it won’t happen. Let the games be played. You will see a much different GT tomorrow than last week. And I wouldn’t be surprised to see FSU in another squeaker.

Tony, you are wrong about Arkansas (and Georgia). Arkansas will keep it close with Bama. Bama is not as good as last season (for some reason, people think they are). A decent defense, but an average offense. Georgia will be much better on D the next few games. They will get better and I can guarantee you this, if they lose to LSU as I suspect, they will not lose to Tennessee. Of course they will defeat Arizona State.

Mike/Uncle Leon,
If you read my post, I didn’t say FSU was for real either. I said they seem to be but as you’ve all pointed out and I agree, the season has just started and there are many games to be played. Sure we both played JSU. GT however had the whole preseason to prepare for that team while FSU had 2 practice days (a 5 day week due to the Mon night Miami game then only 2 days of practicable weather). I’m not here to make excuses though and luckily FSU plays GT, GT plays UNC, UNC plays FSU and finally it looks like we will have some well-balanced yet good ACC football to play in the coming weeks.

You can’t base a team on one game. And both teams LOST to the same team. So it’s all folly to try and predict anything now. The fact you have a loss and squeaked by jax state tells us fsu “isn’t real” whatever that means. And don’t give me this they had all season to prepare for a Div 1 aa team bs. That is horsesqueeze excuse making and you know it. You should NEVER be losing to that team in the 4th qtr, much less with 1 minute left. Congrats on the BYU win and I agree with Goosen. This is going to be a crazy season and more unexpected things will happen.

GT lost in 2008 mainly b/c GT lost 4 starting linemen early in the game: both OTs, and both OGs…and yet GT still had 400 yds on offense, including 300+ rush yds.

That combined with wretched STs play were the KEY factors: 2 missed FGs, and two 4th Qtr TOs deep on GT side of the field.

GT-O will face essentially the exact same UNC defenive roster from last year.

The defensive changes (alignment & starting roster) GT made over the past few days are SIGNIFICANT. GT D is gonna have a HUUUUUUUUUGE day tomorrow. Before Clemson game, I predicted that Clemson QB Parker would throw 2 INTs. He threw 2, but it could have EASILY been 4 INTs with GT dropping 2 other “gimme” INTs. I think UNC QB Yates will also throw 2 INTs.

Also, I wouldnt be surprised to see Jaybo taking an important number of snaps tomorrow. His ability to run the offense is good, and his ability to make the appropriate “reads” is good, and probably better than Nesbitt. Jaybo might also have a better passing ability (sorry Josh but, how much worse can it be). I dont think UNC is expecting to see Jaybo, and that could prove to be a BIG advantage for GT.

Also, when ESPN showed DE Morgan (and most of the GT D-Line) completely “gassed” at the end of 1st Qtr vs. Miami, there was no doubt fatigue was a big factor in that loss. I dont think GT will have any fatigue issues tomorrow.

So:
1. MUCH better alignment & starting roster on D
2. Better STs play
3. Few or Zero TOs
4. Jaybo taking snaps
5. No fatigue

Based on these, I think GT beats UNC: mabe, GT:33 UNC:27.

Chuck UGA, don’t be so sure. Our defense will keep us close in every game we play and looking at your defense so far, I would say we are going to be able to run the ball on you. I’m not saying we win or lose, just saying in a tight game anything can happen.

Big Tone, I felt a sense of anger while reading this blog at our UGA team. I can tell this by you basically saying that the defense sucks and CMR will have the kids coming out flat tomorrow night. While I’m not saying it couldn’t happen with Sweet Willie roaming the sidelines, I disagree. We are a seasoned team by our schedule and Zona State has played no-one of significance. Just look at what the chickens did last night to a Ole Miss team who were in the the same scenario as Zona State. USC was stronger until the 4th quarter because they had been pushed in prior games. It took Ole Miss 3 quarters to catch up. Same will happen tomorrow but it will be long over by the 4th.

This one gets ugly quick. UGA 52-17.

Here’s another prediction. UGA will be a 1-loss team going on Halloweens Day!

RxDawg

Mike GT is not for real. Not until they can find a decent passing game. The reason is becuase whenever you face teams that have a talented enough D-line, specificly the D ends, that can blow off the line and take away your outside pitch guys your going to find it very hard to gain yardage and score points. Against Clemson you won with trickery and special teams. Your offense was horrible. That wont work week in week out.

I’m not bashing Tech for the sake of bashing them. I’m just calling it like I see it. You need a passing game of some kind. Until you develop one, it’s going to be a tough road.

Your comment indicates a lack of education and etiquette. Please don’t tell us you are an Alum from The ‘01 Class of UGA.

Last season I picked Bama to beat The Dawgs. I also predicted Oklahoma State would beat The Dawgs this season. I picked Arkansas to win and was wrong – but not by much. I picked The Dawgs to win in a shootout of Offense with a score of 37-34. I was right about the win but off on the score (so was everyone else).

The Dawgs have no confidence in Martinez and the D will give up a barrel of points. The Devil D will be better than we’ve seen this season and will hold The UGA O enough to win.

LSU has been unimpressive and I believe MS has a shot to knock off a win this time.

Of course these are UPSET PREDICTIONS. I wrote in caps (C-A-P-I-T-A-L L-E-T-T-E-R-S) to help you to understand.

1- Tech can win this one IF the offensive blockers complete their assigned tasks. There were too many missed blocks against Miami. I disagree on Nesbitt as a passer. Force Tech to be a passing team and they are half beaten. They must work the bugs,{har, har, har} out of the triple option. 2- King is back at RB, so he, Samuel, and Thomas can keep fresh legs at TB. How about if the Dawgs just get behind that big ol’ O line and pound the ball? What better way to spend a rainy Saturday afternoon? 3- I think Bama will pound the ball and eat up clock. Mallet can’t throw for many yards from the sideline. 4- If the Gators don’t blow this one open I will think they lack some of last years offense. Namely a guy named Harvin. That D of theirs wins this one anyway and if the O is clicking it’s another Meyer blowout. 5- LSU wins, it could be an ugly game. 6- Gimmie for the Vols. 7- Ditto for the War Tigers. 8- Tony, VT loses with no offense. I keep hearing about the VT defense, when is that vaunted D going to show up? VT is ranked #107 in the nation against the run. Look for the ‘Canes to come out running. 9- I am picking Clemson at home. It’s that lucky rock. 10- JoePa picks up another win in the Great Geezer race. Oh, and Poppa Bobby does too.

You are obviously clueless. Miami is not “very young”. Half their starters are Juniors and Seniors.

You talk trash about tech’s defense. Look in the mirror. At least we only gave up 33 to what should be a top 3 team. And tech’s problems stem from lack of offense production. When your d is on the field for 2/3 of the game, it’s expected to get torched. Explain this riddle Patty.

Sc 7-3 over NC state
Ga 41-37 over sc
sc 16-10 over ole miss

so does sc have a good defense or not? and what does this mean if ga played ole miss? Would it be a shoot out too?

Ga is in big trouble next week and when they really get into some decent defenses. Cause it’s obvious your defense is worse than last year. Who knows. Tomorrow is the perfect trap game for ga. I wouldn;t be surprised to see them lose if the defense continues as is.

Yesterday : “It is going to get ugly. Florida 48, Tennessee 9.”

Okay, Florida has sweated out the Gator Flu and will be looking to impress. They’ll try to stretch the field north-south-east and west. Does AZ ST even know what a grudge match is..? Here’s to hoping Iowa stuffs Penn ST. Miami beats GT again and again and again. TCU, Auburn, LSU, UT…

FLADAWG,

I like where you head is at, but I don’t think ASU will beat UGA. However, I do think it will be a closer game than people think. Why? Because UGA is expected to blowout a Pac 10 team at home, which usually means they’ll do the exact opposite, play half ass football and win by a TD. I also think the MSU vs. LSU will be closer as well, but Dan Mullin just doesn’t have the horses to beat LSU yet. I’d take MSU and ASU against the spread but not straight up.

Hogwash. The offense has nothing to do with it. If he were running a pro-set he would have the same offensive linemen, QBs, RBs & WRs he has now. If you do not block you do not move the ball & score.

Execution, execution, execution.

Dan The Man, you are right on. That’s exactly why I think there is a chance in both cases for an upset. The Dawgs have been playing worse and worse for two seasons. This will be the toughest team we’ve played and I don’t have confidence in the D.

You also see the possibility for an upset in the LSU / Miss State Game. I agree LSU should take it. I’m going for an upset because I think Miss State smells blood and will rise to the occassion.

actually, imo the dawgs are starting to look better all the time! it doesn’t matter how many point u win by,as long as it’s a win. if s. carolina get’s love for beating up #4, then that does wonders for the dawgs strength of schedule. discount what the writers say, as it was these dimwits that picked ole’ miss #4 anyway. if they were right about ole’ miss, it helps ga., if they were wrong, then they are probably wrong about ga being a bad team. it’s all relative! they’re all a bunch of band wagon followers, that walk lockstep one with the other. just wait and see, the dawgs will win at leat 11 games, even with their so-called bad defense. 11 wins does not make one a bad team, regardless of how many points they give up!!!

I knew Ole Miss was over hyped but I figured with their schedule they would be able to win alot of games and give LSU problems for 2nd place in the SEC west but now I’m not so sure.Looking at Ole Miss’s schedule I ee them losing to Alabama LSU and probably Auburn or Tennessee.Looking at LSU’s schedule I see them losing to Alabama and maybe Georgia or Florida although Florida looks more beatable this year.Looks like now it will be Alabama and LSU battlig it out for the SEC west with Auburn behind LSU and Ole Miss behind them.

Voice of Reason

A few thoughts, Tony:

1. Miami is overrated and overconsidered. After all, they beat Tech and FSU. These are not the salad days for Bowden’s Boys, and Tech, while talented on O, is a team that needs its offense to run like clockwork to beat a good opponent. Neither is a juggernaut; just decent teams in a decent conference. This kind of media frenzy happens every year, so don’t jump on the ‘Canes bandwagon just yet.

2. Don’t put too much emphasis on the Gators performance against UT. While not up to their ’90’s standards, UT is very good on D and in the ground game, and UF usually lays an egg against an inferior SEC foe every year. While Tebow’s WRs are a step down this year, this may have been that “egg” game for UF.

3. VT needs respect. Bama is that good, especially along the lines, and Nebraska is only a season from challenging UTx and OU. Year after year, why do writers always discount Beamer in favor of the latest “it” team?

4. Although I am no fan of either squad, I think the AU-UT game will tell us a lot about both teams and the SEC. And So. Carolina is better than people think; people forget the Ol’ Ball Coach has been just a few scores away from 9+ win seasons over the years, and I would line Eric Norwood up by himself against most offenses in the country and feel good about my chances. If Spurrier can just keep that mind control implant he put in Stephen Garcia’s head from malfunctioning…

5. Low score alert: Dawgs handle ASU on a sopping wet field with a punishing ground game, although the D misses a lot of tackles and the O coughs it up a few times. Fans will see the back of Reshad’s jersey a couple times on replays. #9 in your program…

6. Tech will pound UNC–the Heels finally face some talent, and Coach PJ has whipped his guys into shape this week at practice. Will there be an undefeated ACC team going into next week?

7. PSU-Iowa. Has it really come to this? Who cares? Maybe the Big 10 and Big East can set up an interconference championship game one day. Then again, who wants to get outdrawn by the ACC championship game?

8. Most intriguing game of the week: Clemson-TCU. Seriously.

9. Upset alert: LSU-Miss. St. Sure, someone has to get upset, so why not pick yet another overrated SEC West team to fall? I hope I am wrong and LSU waits another week to slip up.

10. Bold prediction: So. Cal. will lose 3 games or more this year.

CatsFly

The Tech game could be very close. If UNC wins, get ready for it, with two games at home after Tech in which they will be heavily favored, they will move into the top ten at six and zero.

Nachos,

I understand that your intention is to present a cartoon character persona on this blog, but yes, I was impressed by Arkansas. Their defense was good enough to interrupt Bama’s game plan. They were able to run on Alabama’s defense better than I thought they would. They were good enough to force the Tide to rely on big plays to win the game. I will be surprised if Arky doesn’t win some big games this year. I will also be surprised if Ole Miss turns out to be as bad as they looked on Thursday night. Houston Nutt is a good coach, but his specialty is in winning as an underdog. Neither he, nor this Ole Miss team, has yet learned how to operate in the limelight. Coach Nutt called the game in his opening statement as they came onto the field when he said that they were now in the position of being the ‘hunted’, rather than the ‘hunters’. They have too much talent to play that badly for the entire season.

Putting Boise at #5 is a joke. They beat a mediocre Oregon team that did not want to be in Idaho.

Look at the rest of Boise’s schedule:

Miami (Ohio) Won 48-0
@Fresno St. Won 51-34
@Bowling Green Won 49-14
UC Davis
@Tulsa
@Hawaii
San Jose St.
@Louisiana Tech
Idaho
@Utah St.
Nevada
New Mexico St.

This is a joke. How does this schedule merit a BSC game or a Top 10 ranking?

In week 1, Ohio State fell in the polls because they only beat Navy 31-27. It is only fair to drop Boise if they have a close win.

.
