The Fearless Friday Forecast

Your Fearless Friday Forecaster went 8-2 last week because:

**–He didn’t believe that Florida State, which almost lost to Jacksonville State, could go on the road and beat BYU, which had beaten Oklahoma. Speed, baby, speed. FSU has speed.

**–He didn’t believe it was possible for USC, after winning a dramatic game at Ohio State, could lose to an unranked Pac-10 team for the fourth straight year. Oops.

He did think Georgia could beat Arkansas but he never believed that two SEC teams could be so bad on defense.

Nevertheless, your humble prognosticator stands at 20-7 after three weeks and is back for more punishment.

Let’s get on with the Forecast:

1. North Carolina at Georgia Tech: Everybody’s blaming Paul Johnson’s offense for last week’s struggle at Miami. I don’t think it’s the gun. It’s the guys who are shooting it. Right now they aren’t playing very smart. They probably need to be a little tougher, too. If Georgia Tech is going to have a good season, here is where the Jackets need to make a stand. Georgia Tech 21, North Carolina 20.

2. Arizona State at Georgia: Arizona State is 2-0 but the wins have come again Idaho State and Louisiana-Monroe. Georgia will come out flat after three straight tough games and this will be pretty ugly. But Joe Cox and A.J. Green save the day. Georgia 35, Arizona State 20.

3. Arkansas at Alabama: Remember how much time Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett had to throw last week against Georgia? Cut that time by more than half. Alabama 31, Arkansas 10.

4. Florida at Kentucky: The Gators played a little tight last week because of all the hoopla with Tennessee and Lane Kiffin. Now they relax and let their talent take over. Kentucky is better than a lot of people think. But not that good.  Florida 31, Kentucky 17.

5. LSU at Miss. State: LSU has won nine straight games against the Bulldogs, outscoring them 374-105 in the process. LSU starts opening up the playbook with Mississippi State, Georgia, and Florida coming up in the next three weeks. LSU 42, Miss. State 20.

6. Ohio at Tennessee: Tennessee quarterback Jonathan Crompton struggles in the big games (like Florida) but he is the model of efficiency against the Western Kentuckys and Ohios of the world. The Vols have a big game with Auburn next week and will use this outing to rebuild Crompton’s confidence. Tennessee 45, Ohio 9.

7. Ball State at Auburn: A year ago Ball State was one of the most explosive teams in the country with quarterback Nate Davis. But Davis is gone and so is Coach Brady Hoke. Now the Fighting David Lettermans (his alma mater) are 0-3 with a loss to New Hampshire. Auburn rolls to 4-0 and gets ready for a trip to Tennessee. Auburn 45, Ball State 10.

8. Miami at Virginia Tech: Right now Miami has the most impressive body of work with wins over Florida State and Georgia Tech. If the Hurricanes can win at Blacksburg, where they have lost in five of their last seven trips, they will vault in the rankings. ‘Canes win it with defense.  Miami 20, Virginia Tech 17.

9. TCU at Clemson: With losses by BYU and Utah last week, TCU (2-0) has a chance to be a BCS buster if it can run the table. The Horned Frogs have yet another great defense. I just think that Clemson has too many weapons with C.J. Spiller, Kyle Parker, and Jacoby Ford. Clemson 17, TCU 14.

10. Iowa at Penn State: Iowa beat Penn State last season and knocked the Nittany Lions out of a shot at the national championship. Penn State has not been tested in two games. Iowa (3-0) has gotten better since an early scare against Northern Iowa (17-16). I just can’t see Joe Pa losing this game at home. Penn State 21, Iowa 17.

Do you think it is any coincedende that Arkansas, SC score much more on us than anyone?

Bama is going to tee off on Arkansas, Ole Miss held SC down although they couldn’t score. Garcia stinks and GA made him look like a world beater. Mallett IS good but not THAT good.

Every week it will seem like GA gives up more points to a team than most others.

Why: Excuses….penalties, players out of position, no pash rush….all the responsibilty of the defense. Prove the fans wrong Willie and shut down Az State and come out guns blazing against LSU an TN.

Clemson’s poor o-line play will be exploited by TCU’s defense. Horned Frogs by at least 2 TD’s.

As far as Jevan Snead he did not look good in that game last night. His arm did look big though when he over threw the receiver by 20 yards in the endzone. Admittedly I have not seen him in action enough to make a judgement call but I think what people are talking about is the nfl “potential” he has – ala Matt Stafford.

at least our conference did not lose to Richmond, William & Mary, and require overtime to beat James Madison. SEC will have a team playing for the national championship while the ACC championship game stadium will be two thirds empty. Your one hope is Miami.

Even though Jewel Hampton is out for the year and Iowa as a sleeper has been blown up… Iowa owns Penn State at Beaver Stadium under Ferentz.

I agree with the score 21-17 PSU I think ultimately PSU is better. Just ashamed they choose to play such a baby schedule.

PreyDawg- If you could read, I said I guessed Ole Miss would win based on polls, not what some talking head said on ESPN. I was not impressed by SC’s loss to a defenseless UGA team and thought’ “Surely Ole Miss is better than that.” I was wrong. It wasn’t the first time and it won’t be the last.

UGA would do well for themselves to put this one away by halftime. They need to show the country and themselves that they are capable of putting toegther a solid game. I think the 3 tough games play a factor in thier getting ready to play this week. They know they have to put it all toegther and play clean football. If they come out flat… it should just increase the fire underneath their coaching staff who have underachieved a bit.

Arizona St at UGA: Arizona State ranks No. 1 in the nation in turnover margin, while Georgia ranks No. 116. The Sun Devils have lost no turnovers and gained eight; Georgia has lost nine and gained two.
Uhoh….. However, it might not be that simple. ASU hasn’t really played anyone and UGA has been playing very tough Div1 teams right out the gate (By the way, one of those teams just knocked off #4 Ole Miss last night). But heres the real kicker. I duno if anyone has followed the news lately, but it’s been raining in Georgia a lot lately. The forecast for Saturdays game is yet again, a lot of rain. How much do you think it rains out in Arizona? Dawgs win their first comfortable win of the year.

North Carolina at Georgia Tech: Tech has a QB that doesn’t have much of a passing game. NC has a pretty good D-line that blow up the outside pitch guys in Tech’s option game. This will take away a lot of Tech’s options on offense. NC wins or rather Tech loses until they show me they can throw the ball some.

Arkansas at Alabama: A lot of people think Bama will blow Ark out. Not so fast my friend! Arkansas has an NFL QB running the show and this team is for real. I think this will be a lot closer then the experts think and although I’m picking Bama, this has a lot of potential for an upset. We will find out a lot about Arkansas, Bama, and UGA from this game. But, at the end of the day Arkansas’s defense sucks and Bama should be able to put them away.

Florida at Kentucky: This game is intriguing. Florida didn’t really look unstoppable against UT last week. And this is at Kentucky. UK shouldn’t have the horses to keep up here, but this is one of those inter-conference SEC games that can get hairy. UF still is trying to get the ball rolling, but should win a close one. I’d like to know the spread on this one.

Miami at Virginia Tech: Miami is back as the darling of the media again. To their credit they do look pretty good and have beaten some quality teams. FSU seems to be for real, but GT doesn’t. On the other end Virginia Tech has been more battle tested then most teams in the nation. This one should be the game of the week. I’ll take Tech in an upset over Miami with the home field advantage and that they have seen better teams and games overall. Tech’s QB has been trying to develop his passing game. That’s nice. Here is where his wheels come out to play.

Iowa at Penn State: Iowa looked pretty rough in their first game against Northern Iowa (17-16). They since have woken up. PSU is a national title contender playing at home. I’ll take Joe Pa and the crowd despite Iowa having PSU’s number as of late.

So gt has a close call last year with a div 1 aa team becuase they have to start their 3rd string qb and more starters out with injuries. Fla state does the same this year but they are “for real”. Fsu loses to miami at home. Gt does on the road. But GT is fake and Fsu is real. Nice contradictions all the time from you idiots. You have no common sense.

5 losses for your crap defense team. Aubarn, Fla, Lsu and GT will all run over your sorry defense.

Auburn blows out BG
VT beats Miami

Penn State blows out Iowa

Auburn and Tenn in the MAC, as usual

just when i started to think Garcia was a pretty good QB-he did his best to throw that game away (sulking on the sidelines as well) Ole Miss has a massive O-Line massive D-Line great secondary but did they stink that game up-they need another running back that can block in pass protection and more receivers then perhaps they are a top 15 team

molardog

September 25th, 2009
10:43 am

Everyone bashing the Dawg’s defense really needs to take note of just how green the secondary is (age and experience-wise). Couple that with the D-line not getting consistent pressure on the backfield and you have a formula for giving up large chunks of yardage and points…..BUT, I really think there’s a good chance we’ll see good progression out this unit as the year goes on, as they gain real world experience/maturity….who know though…

Mr. CFB, give yourself some credit. You predicted that USC-UW would be a lot closer than expected, and you were right about that. Not many did even that, much less a straight upset.

I think you’re right about Tech bouncing back this week and the Dawgs winning ugly (oh, for a game that we could get our No.2 QB some reps — not to replace Cox, just to have a backup ready). I’m not sure Miami will be able to keep the ball rolling after some emotional wins and playing on the road against a frustrated Va. Tech facing a must-win game. Miami has picked up some needed signature wins for the program, but I’m not sure they’ve come that far just yet.

Coll football is going to be chaotic this year. Why? Because parity has finally rearded it’s ugly head. Any given Sat–or Thursday–a team can beat another. Look at last nights game for more confusion. Then you have fsu blowing out byu on the road. So would fsu manhandle Ok? Nope. You’re going to see a weird season. Teams win that you expected to lose and vice versa. This is going to be the year that breaks the BCS. It doesn’t mean things will change, but the fans will be irate. There will be 10 teams that have a legit reason to play in the NC game this year. Aside from a boise, who plays no one, there will NOT be any undefeated teams this year. It’s going to get messy and ugly by seasons end.

OK, can we stop saying so-and-so beat the #7 or whatever team in the nation? As has been proven, rankings mean ZERO right now. Wasn’t Vandy even ranked in the Top 15 last year? Gt beat Clemson, ATLnole…and Clemson is a good team.

No Miami passed all over GT. They did the same to you. And teams that are “real” aren’t losing to Jax State with 1 minute left in the game. Using your logic, Gt is for real since we dominated Jax state and you barely squeaked out a win. So gt isn’t for real. What happens IF they win their next 4 games, which includes your team? Don’t say it won’t happen. Let the games be played. You will see a much different GT tomorrow than last week. And I wouldn’t be surprised to see FSU in another squeaker.

Tony, you are wrong about Arkansas (and Georgia). Arkansas will keep it close with Bama. Bama is not as good as last season (for some reason, people think they are). A decent defense, but an average offense. Georgia will be much better on D the next few games. They will get better and I can guarantee you this, if they lose to LSU as I suspect, they will not lose to Tennessee. Of course they will defeat Arizona State.

Mike/Uncle Leon,
If you read my post, I didn’t say FSU was for real either. I said they seem to be but as you’ve all pointed out and I agree, the season has just started and there are many games to be played. Sure we both played JSU. GT however had the whole preseason to prepare for that team while FSU had 2 practice days (a 5 day week due to the Mon night Miami game then only 2 days of practicable weather). I’m not here to make excuses though and luckily FSU plays GT, GT plays UNC, UNC plays FSU and finally it looks like we will have some well-balanced yet good ACC football to play in the coming weeks.

You can’t base a team on one game. And both teams LOST to the same team. So it’s all folly to try and predict anything now. The fact you have a loss and squeaked by jax state tells us fsu “isn’t real” whatever that means. And don’t give me this they had all season to prepare for a Div 1 aa team bs. That is horsesqueeze excuse making and you know it. You should NEVER be losing to that team in the 4th qtr, much less with 1 minute left. Congrats on the BYU win and I agree with Goosen. This is going to be a crazy season and more unexpected things will happen.

GT lost in 2008 mainly b/c GT lost 4 starting linemen early in the game: both OTs, and both OGs…and yet GT still had 400 yds on offense, including 300+ rush yds.

That combined with wretched STs play were the KEY factors: 2 missed FGs, and two 4th Qtr TOs deep on GT side of the field.

GT-O will face essentially the exact same UNC defenive roster from last year.

The defensive changes (alignment & starting roster) GT made over the past few days are SIGNIFICANT. GT D is gonna have a HUUUUUUUUUGE day tomorrow. Before Clemson game, I predicted that Clemson QB Parker would throw 2 INTs. He threw 2, but it could have EASILY been 4 INTs with GT dropping 2 other “gimme” INTs. I think UNC QB Yates will also throw 2 INTs.

Also, I wouldnt be surprised to see Jaybo taking an important number of snaps tomorrow. His ability to run the offense is good, and his ability to make the appropriate “reads” is good, and probably better than Nesbitt. Jaybo might also have a better passing ability (sorry Josh but, how much worse can it be). I dont think UNC is expecting to see Jaybo, and that could prove to be a BIG advantage for GT.

Also, when ESPN showed DE Morgan (and most of the GT D-Line) completely “gassed” at the end of 1st Qtr vs. Miami, there was no doubt fatigue was a big factor in that loss. I dont think GT will have any fatigue issues tomorrow.

So:
1. MUCH better alignment & starting roster on D
2. Better STs play
3. Few or Zero TOs
4. Jaybo taking snaps
5. No fatigue

Based on these, I think GT beats UNC: mabe, GT:33 UNC:27.
