We went 8-2 last week as Tennessee was brought back down to Earth by UCLA and Notre Dame used some questionable clock management and fell at Michigan. That’s a two-week record of 15-5 but starting this week and next week things get a little harder as some of the cupcakes are going to be replaced by conference games.
Without further delay, let’s get to the Fearless Friday Forecast:
1. Georgia at Arkansas: The Bulldogs have had two tough games while Arkansas had last week off. Logically, Georgia should be in real trouble in Fayetteville, which is why they are the underdog according to the boys in Vegas. I just have the feeling that QB Joe Cox is going to play well again. I also think Georgia will be able to run the ball and milk the clock, keeping the ball away from Bobby Petrino’s offense. Georgia 17, Arkansas 14.
2. Tennessee at Florida: Yes, Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin used his mouth to write a check that his team cannot cash. But Kiffin knew that when he accused Urban Meyer of cheating. Kiffin bought himself some good will with the Tennessee fans, but on Saturday the bill finally arrives. What I’m wondering is how long Tennessee quarterback Jonathan Crompton will last in this game before he gives way to Nick Stephens. It is going to get ugly. Florida 48, Tennessee 9.
3. North Texas at Alabama: Wide receiver Julio Jones (bruised kneecap) and running back Roy Upchurch (high ankle sprain) may not go in this game. It won’t really matter as this game should be about getting the offensive line and quarterback Greg McElroy ready for next week’s SEC opener with Arkansas. Alabama 42, North Texas 7.
4. West Virginia at Auburn: West Virginia will never be able to replace Pat White, but they have found a very good quarterback in Jarrett Brown, who had four touchdown passes in last week’s 35-20 win over East Carolina. Auburn has 1,145 yards and 86 points in its first two games. This one looks like a shootout. Auburn 38, West Virginia 31.
5. Florida State at BYU: Florida State coach Bobby Bowden really needs this game. The Seminoles lost a heart breaker to Miami on Sept. 7 and needed to rally with two scores in the final 35 seconds to beat Jacksonville State. BYU has quarterback Max Hall who has a chance to play himself into the Heisman Trophy discussion. The Cougars also know that a win over Florida State, coupled with their Sept. 5 victory over Oklahoma, puts them right in the middle of the BCS discussion. BYU 31, Florida State 24.
6. Boston College at Clemson: The Tigers are still upset about the loss at Georgia Tech last week. They’ll take it out on the Eagles and go to 1-1 in the ACC. Clemson 24, Boston College 14.
7. Nebraska at Virginia Tech: Nebraska is looking for a signature victory to use as a measuring stick of the program’s progress under Bo Pelini. Virginia Tech, thought to be the ACC’s best hope for a national championship contender, needs to win to avoid a 1-2 start. Virginia Tech 17, Nebraska 14.
8. Texas Tech at Texas: Michael Crabtree’s touchdown catch to beat Texas was the signature moment of the 2008 season. The loss simply cost Texas a shot at the Big 12 championship AND the national championship. The Longhorns are determined to win them all in 2009 and get to the BCS championship game. Texas 35, Texas Tech 20.
9. Florida Atlantic at South Carolina: Coach Steve Spurrier let quarterback Stephen Garcia throw it 53 times in last week’s high-scoring loss to Georgia. How many times will he throw it against the Owls of Howard Schnellenberger? South Carolina 31, Florida Atlantic 10.
10. Southern California at Washington: The Trojans, who won a very tough game at Ohio State (18-15) last Saturday, go on the road for the second straight week. This time they may be without Matt Barkley, who has a bruised right shoulder. I can’t go with the Huskies in a straight up win. But this one will be closer than a lot of people think. Southern California 21, Washington 17.

I would predict that the UGA-ARK game would be a lot higher scoring than 17-10. It’s hard to predict who will win, but if the Dawgs don’t play better defense, it’s going to be a long season. Where are all the Tech bloggers today. Has Furman finally lost it? He’s anointed Paul Johnson as one of the greatest ever? Johnson is a godd coach, as his record attests, but it may be a bit early to say he’s one of the greatest.

BAMA STAN – love the ‘GINGER ASSASSIN’ comment. Yes, Joe Cox is an over achiever – and a guy you want to succeed. Easy to root for.
As for 2009 GEORGIA BULLDAWGS – one game at a time.

My prediction – UGA will come out focussed and will win this game.

I think it’s funny to hear UGA fans talk smack about GT’s offense, I’m a fan of both teams and think both offenses are somewhat horrible. GT just needs to get a better passer, it’s going to increasingly hard to move the ball without being able to keep the defense honest. Combine that with the fact that their blocking hasn’t been as good as it was a year ago. With all that being said Johnson is a great coach he just needs to find the right personnel for his system and it starts with the signal caller. UGA don’t have too much room for criticism, their offense is just as bad. They couldn’t muster much production against a OK State defense that gave close to 50 to Houston last week and without the good special team play against SC their record would be 0-2. Not too room to talk whether it’s a option attack or pro-style offense neither one has been impressive so far!

This weekend may see a couple of questions answered regarding Auburn:
Is their new offense really that good?
How will the team fare against decent competition?
I can’t believe I’m actually looking forward to watching an Auburn game this weekend.

Big Tone,
Miami is back, good defense and a great running game. Anyways, as you are aware I know my football……. My predictions are usually pretty good and I have a good feel for what going on out there. After all, last week I predicted a wild high scoring UGA-USC game last week. Who on this blog did that other than me?
I predicted yesterday that I thought Tech would get beat badly and they did. I also predicted UGA would win easily. I am sticking to it. UGA 42-17. Dawgs are about to go on a streak and only have 1 loss when we play UF on pumkins day.
Also, I hope Mike Bobo was watching Miami run the damn ball last night. We have that ability to do that week in and week out, he just has to stick with it and stop panicking when we don’t score on each possession.

I hated to see our jealous little brothers lose last night, especially to Miami, but it is kind of nice to see some of the UGA haters get their comeuppance. Nuff bout them. I think we can hang some points on the hogs, maybe upper 20’s because I firmly believe our offense is beginning to gel. Question is, can we stop their offense? Go Dawgs!

Old Grad,
Tech was beaten badly last night, in the second half against Clemson, and in the bowl game against LSU. Against FBS opponents, that’s one good half out of the last six. Add to that the facts that Tech has looked fundamentally (i.e. blocking, tackling) horrible and in poor condition, and the handwriting’s on the wall. Time to lower expectations for this year.

Well Tech (of the georgia variety) lost last night to Miami. I’m not that surprised by that one. The Clemson game showed us that Tech just isn’t that good agains a team that can tackle. Their huge glaring problem? They have a QB that can’t pass…next.
Dogs at Hogs: This game has stood out to me since the begining of the season. UGA went on the road for a tough game against Ok St, then come home for a tough game against USC (east). Now they go back on the road for yet another tough game with Arkansas. Yeesh. While Ark opened up with a patsy, then have a bye (yeh, after 1 game with misouri st I can see how the bye was a must..) So basicly, they have been planing for UGA all year. This is one time you’ll see me pick with my mind, not my heart. I just don’t see UGA having it in em, but I hope I’m wrong on this one.
Tennessee at Florida: hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. Anyone that knows the background story on this game knows this is going to be a funny one. Short version, Lane Kiffin claimed Urban Myer was cheating (he wasn’t) in recruiting. Then Kiffin proceded to mock the Gators about how he would sing Rocky Top all night long after beating them. Ummmmm yeh, thats exactly what you do against the defending national champions. Time to learn some respect boy. I duno why, but I think this will be closer then the experts think. The pt spread on this is like 28. When was the last time Tennessee was a 28pt underdog? Gators win, but if I’m a betting man I’m taking UT and those 28 points.
*Disclaimer* If I’m a betting man, I’d be really broke by this point and running from repo’s.
West Virginia at Auburn: This game is really under the radar. AU has been playing well, against nobody. WVU was awesome, back in the Rodriguez, White, Slaton days. I’ll give AU the nod in this one since it’s at home but it should be a close one as both teams will find out a lot about themselves in this one. The winner cracks the top 25 and starts turning national heads their way.
FSU at BYU: This one will be awesome. BYU is for real and they are going to let the nation know it yet again. Bobby Bowden really starts thinking about hanging it up after this one. The FSU administration starts letting him know it too.
Nebraska at Virginia Tech: VaTech just isn’t that good. Neither is the entire ACC save for possibly Miami. Cornhuskers rejoice. Major kudos to VaTech though for this out of conference scheduling. Bama? Nebraska? Talk about going after the historic giants.
Texas Tech at Texas: If ya like OFFENSE >> defense then the Big 12 is your conference. Texas Tech just doesn’t have the horses now that they no longer have the best WR in college. Texas a billion to a million.
NFL: Drew Brees passes for 14 TD’s and I ride the easy train to fantasy football wonderland =D

12 NATIONAL TITLES – 21 SEC TITLES!!!
Hey murfdawg – glad you missed me!!!
Still commenting on these blogs – just not as much recently since July as my job has me traveling all over the country – very happy football season is now in high gear.
Hey – I call it as I see it – whether it is criticizing my own team (as I did with our Utah preparedness – remember my line – we got UTAH”D?) or stating my unbiased opinion as a college football fan and an SEC fan.
As you recall:
During spring – I predicted UGA could be in trouble and potentially facing a losing season – thinking they are IN THE PACK – not ahead of the pack.
I also stated with the talent they had been recruiting – could potentially win 8 or 9 max regular season games – but mainly thought this team could potentially LOSE 5 to 7 games.
This summer – took a softer stance as my DAWGS buddies convinced me the UGA defense would be a lot better! Thinking 7 wins a probability and 8 wins a good possibility.
NOW? Who knows – this team is all over the place. Does have talent and looked fast against USCeast – but was pretty lucky to win that game – just does not seem disciplined – and Offense NO-showed at OSU – which got embarrassed by Houston.
So what does this tell you about 2009 UGA team?
It tells me that UGA is in the parody pool of teams – fighting and clawing to get out. YES – they have slipped back into the pack. Still standing by my prediction that UGA could wind up losing 5, 6 or potentilly 7 games this season.
However – season is still young – in 2007 – Dogs turned it around and played lights out finishing strong. Can this team do the same? time will tell.
However, this team does not look very good – defense looks like 2008 – very soft and does not get turnovers (at least so far).
Arkansas has had time to prepare and has studied UGA against two LIVE opponents.
Will the GINGER ASSASSIN will his team to a victory Saturday?
As a BAMA fan – I am rooting for Georgia to beat a rising SEC West team. However, I think the HOGS will be ready – and Petrino’s teams are usually fundlementally strong – meaning – they do not beat themselves – which is not good for UGA (aka: Team Penalty)!
ROLLLLLLLL TIDE murfdawg, ROLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL TIDE!!!!!!!

I think the Hogs take the Dogs – the difference will be the superior Arkansas QB who already has big game experience from his time at Michigan and comes equipped with a rocket arm. The Arkansas running game is at least on a par with Georgia’s. Coaching – both teams have good coaches – but Petrino may be a bit more aggressive and is known for being able to capitalize on a pro style quarterback. Defense is sub par on both teams. Combine that with the home field for Arkansas and I think it’ll be a runaway for Arkansas.
That said, I’m pulling for Georgia. But I’m offering what seems to me to be a realistic appraisal of the two teams. Glad to be wrong.

gdawg~zoo—-Called that right. Miami gave a 3-hour seminar on how to defend Paul Johnson’s triple-option last night. Do you think somebody has sent the tape to Willie Martinez? If so, will Willie actually watch it?
IMHO, Tech will be vulnerable to this kind of offensive shut-down until they develop a credible passing game to go with their rushing attack. The bigger, more athletic defenses already have a model for shutting down the one-dimensional ground game. We saw it in the LSU game, and again last night, and when a good defensive team has a bye week (or all of December) to prepare for Tech’s current offense, they can do well against it.
Bottom line: Tech needs a quarterback who can throw down field as well as run and lateral the ball.

SC is hurting on D-line
September 18th, 2009
12:17 pm
In the first quarter of the UGA game, N. Pepper went down and SC went to 3 down lineman vs 4 down. UGA started moving the ball on SC. Yesterday, another lineman went down and an O-lineman was ask to move to the D-line. SC will get Ajibou, Pepper, and Ingam back for Ole Miss, so I look for SC to have a low scoring, boring games vs Florida Atlantic and then have a great game when ole Miss comes calling.

The question is not how good Miami is; the question is, how bad is teck? Out of shape, SWISS CHEESE defense, 3 and out option offense and classless coach. More losses to come… lots more
Other perdictions….. swamy says UGA 27 HOGS 20. Dawgs don’t turn it over and get some sacks.
If the Gaters jump on TENN early they’ll score 50. If not, the big orange will make a game of it…. say Gaters 35 and Vols 17.
Allbarn vs Hillbillies….. Allbarn hasn’t played anyone so they are kinda like Tenn was after Western Ky., giddy for nothing… but SEC prevails 21 to 17.

Anyone notice how tired Tech looked early on last night? Especially on defense? They looked tired from the 2nd qtr on last weekend against Clemson. GT just doesn’t look as physically conditioned as other teams I’ve been watching.
I love option offense but it looks like I may have been dead wrong in thinking GT would roar through the ACC and win at least 9 games. From LSU to Clemson in the 2nd half to Miami defenses are stacking 9 men in the box, the defensive ends are bigger and quicker than what CPJ was used to seeing, and the GT offense seems to have actually regressed. How many times did you see the def. end disrupt the option play last night. A lot!
GT is doomed if Nesbitt can’t develop a passing game with some semblence of consistency. Seems like defenses are loading up and just daring him to pass. And you know what? He can’t pass. Can’t do it worth a flip consistently. Looks bad for GT now that everyone seems to be following the blueprint for stopping their offense. Hope I’m wrong though.

Yes, Tennessee will lose to Florida. They were going to lose no matter what, if anything, Kiffifn did or said. So to all the yahoos from aound the region, some from Knoxvegas, who say that Kfffin was being stupid and the Vols are now going to get their collective cumupence, what does it matter whether you lose by 42 or 58? As for the game itself, unless UT can find a passing game that took last week off (not likely), then there is no reason for the Gators to do anything but stack the line and dare the Vols to beat them through the air. Otherwise, it’ll be just like last week where the defense was left defending a short field all afternoon. UT’s defense is very talented, though thin at the backers, but you can’t leave them out there al day long without it catching up to them.

Just read some comments about LSU running back Charles Scott. I’m EXTREMELY impressed with this guy. He should be given tons of credit for this type of attitude.
——-
The early season award for the most unselfish player in the SEC has to go to LSU senior running back Charles Scott.
We’re talking about a guy who rushed for 1,174 yards and 18 touchdowns last season and was the second leading returning rusher in the league.
But with an obvious void at fullback, Scott went to LSU coach Les Miles and offered to sub in as a blocker for Keiland Williams, who leads the Tigers in rushing through two games with 123 yards on 17 carries.
Scott, who’s built like a fullback with his hulking 235-pound frame, said back in March during spring practice that he was willing to do whatever it took for the Tigers to get back to the SEC Championship Game. If that meant playing some fullback, so be it.
“I don’t mind at all putting my hand in that dirt,” Scott said. “You look at people like Jacob Hester and everything he did and following in his shoes. We’ve got to have more of that, more of doing whatever it takes for this team to win. If I need to get to fullback and block, I don’t mind that at all. I can handle anything they want to give me.”
