The Fearless Friday Forecast

We went 8-2 last week as Tennessee was brought back down to Earth by UCLA and Notre Dame used some questionable clock management and fell at Michigan. That’s a two-week record of 15-5 but starting this week and next week things get a little harder as some of the cupcakes are going to be replaced by conference games.

Without further delay, let’s get to the Fearless Friday Forecast:

1. Georgia at Arkansas: The Bulldogs have had two tough games while Arkansas had last week off. Logically, Georgia should be in real trouble in Fayetteville, which is why they are the underdog according to the boys in Vegas. I just have the feeling that QB Joe Cox is going to play well again. I also think Georgia will be able to run the ball and milk the clock, keeping the ball away from Bobby Petrino’s offense. Georgia 17, Arkansas 14.

2. Tennessee at Florida: Yes, Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin used his mouth to write a check that his team cannot cash.  But Kiffin knew that when he accused Urban Meyer of cheating. Kiffin bought himself some good will with the Tennessee fans, but on Saturday the bill finally arrives. What I’m wondering is how long Tennessee quarterback Jonathan Crompton will last in this game before he gives way to Nick Stephens. It is going to get ugly. Florida 48, Tennessee 9.

3. North Texas at Alabama: Wide receiver Julio Jones (bruised kneecap) and running back Roy Upchurch (high ankle sprain)  may not go in this game. It won’t really matter as this game should be about getting the offensive line and quarterback Greg McElroy ready for next week’s SEC opener with Arkansas. Alabama 42, North Texas 7.

4. West Virginia at Auburn: West Virginia will never be able to replace Pat White, but they have found a very good quarterback in Jarrett Brown, who had four touchdown passes in last week’s 35-20 win over East Carolina. Auburn has 1,145 yards and 86 points in its first two games. This one looks like a shootout. Auburn 38, West Virginia 31.

5. Florida State at BYU: Florida State coach Bobby Bowden really needs this game. The Seminoles lost a heart breaker to Miami on Sept. 7 and needed to rally with two scores in the final 35 seconds to beat Jacksonville State. BYU has quarterback Max Hall who has a chance to play himself into the Heisman Trophy discussion. The Cougars also know that a win over Florida State, coupled with their Sept. 5 victory over Oklahoma, puts them right in the middle of the BCS discussion. BYU 31, Florida State 24.

6. Boston College at Clemson: The Tigers are still upset about the loss at Georgia Tech last week. They’ll take it out on the Eagles and go to 1-1 in the ACC. Clemson 24, Boston College 14.

7. Nebraska at Virginia Tech:  Nebraska is looking for a signature victory to use as a measuring stick of the program’s progress under Bo Pelini. Virginia Tech, thought to be the ACC’s best hope for a national championship contender, needs to win to avoid a 1-2 start. Virginia Tech 17, Nebraska 14.

8. Texas Tech at Texas: Michael Crabtree’s touchdown catch to beat Texas was the signature moment of the 2008 season. The loss simply cost Texas a shot at the Big 12 championship AND the national championship. The Longhorns are determined to win them all in 2009 and get to the BCS championship game. Texas 35, Texas Tech 20.

9. Florida Atlantic at South Carolina: Coach Steve Spurrier let quarterback Stephen Garcia throw it 53 times in last week’s high-scoring loss to Georgia. How many times will he throw it against the Owls of Howard Schnellenberger? South Carolina 31, Florida Atlantic 10.

10. Southern California at Washington: The Trojans, who won a very tough game at Ohio State (18-15) last Saturday, go on the road for the second straight week. This time they may be without Matt Barkley, who has a bruised right shoulder. I can’t go with the Huskies in a straight up win. But this one will be closer than a lot of people think. Southern California 21, Washington 17.

Ever body on that Junkyard Blawg’s been fussin’ bout not playin the young quarterbacks enough and how they aint gone be ready for next year cause of it. Well, I thank my Dawgs should play all the freshmen for the rest of the season to get em ready for our national champeenship run next year. That is if it’s all right to go 1 and 11 this year.

Since it seems there has been a constant talking of smack in this town by GTers for a year now, we gotta talk about that game last night…

–Against its last three Div 1A opponents, GT’s O has scored 3, 16 and 17, respectively.
–Dwyer is — maybe — the 4th best RB in the conference. Spiller and those 2 guys from Miami are both better.
–GT D stinks.

Dawgs, I hope you give a good show this weekend so that Saban has some good tape to work from for next week. Please do not lay down in this game.

I think the FL-TN score will be closer than people think. 27-6 or something.

Wouldn’t be surprised, either, if the Aubs win easily. Coaching has gone down hill at WVU.

…only 95 yards rushing? I don’t care if Dwyer is hurt or not, what happened to that vaunted rushing game? Looks like it really is a high school offense playing against the big boys.

We have been saying since last year, it doesn’t matter who the COACH is – he doesn’t get to play (of course, it doesn’t help when Furman Bisher gets on board and annoints the guy as one of the best of all time after ONE season playing big boy football).

So, lick your wounds, and get ready for some more beat downs. Geez, as m would say, even Chan Gailey beat UM every time!!!!! Maybe he needs to go chase that Greyhound bus!!!!!

Looks like the GTu high school offense is coming to bear now.

It was easy for Johnson to carve up I-AA with Adrian Peterson, who simply had a speech disorder and could not get into a D1 school. His brother Mike is pretty good for the Falcons right now.

It was also easy with Navy because the schedule changed every year.

But when you play against DC’s who make half a million dollars a year, that high school offense is not going to consistently work.

Josh Nesbitt will soon come to the realization that he could be looking at an NFL paycheck if he had played safety in college. Now, he faces the prospects of returning to Greene County, a few credits shy of his history of science and technology degree.

Gtu will not be able to recruit big time players, because everyone will soon be able to see that a kid cannot go to the NFL from Gtu’s high school offense.

Thomas is a great physical specimen, but he has no idea how to run a pass route. He literally just runs down the field and jumps up for the ball. NFL coaches will be so angry when they get him in camp.

It was a nice little season for Gtu last year, but now you are going to be relegated to little old high school gimmick offense school again. Hope you enjoyed your run while it lasted.

Tech folks have told Dawgs fans the last 12 month’s that they didn’t want to hear about all our injuries…..that it just an excuse yada yada yada……news flash, take dwyer and nesbitt and put them in street cloth’s, and you would not win 2 or 3 more games. My take on the Tech offense is that when it’s good, it’s very good. But against 4 and 5 star players and it’s not clicking, you’re toast. Dwyer IS banged up, Nesbitt is/was dazed and your second best D lineman is hurt.

1. Georgia at Arkansas: Georgia 17, Arkansas 14.

I expect more offense: G 27 – A 17

2. Tennessee at Florida: Florida 48, Tennessee 9.

I really hope that this game gets interesting. I really, really doubt that it will.

3. North Texas at Alabama: Alabama 42, North Texas 7.

Last week of Fall Camp. Hard to get up for a game like this. A good time to review the 2007 LA-Monroe game film.

4. West Virginia at Auburn: Auburn 38, West Virginia 31.

Toomer’s Drug put a hold their annual TP order until they see the outcome of this game. (will last year’s surplus get them through this season?)

5. Florida State at BYU: BYU 31, Florida State 24.

I know that there must be a really good Cougar, polygamy and Seminhole joke to go along with this game — but it’s just too early in the morning for me to figure it out right now. Feel free to ad lib.

6. Boston College at Clemson: Clemson 24, Boston College 14.

Yawn…

7. Nebraska at Virginia Tech: Virginia Tech 17, Nebraska 14.

Man, I really feel old when I realize that I recall a time during which Nebraska was relevant.

8. Texas Tech at Texas: Texas 35, Texas Tech 20.

Big 12 back to normal — Texas and her little sisters.

9. Florida Atlantic at South Carolina: South Carolina 31, Florida Atlantic 10.

SC needs these OOC wins to maintain their superior position to Vandy and MSU in the SEC.

10. Southern California at Washington: Southern California 21, Washington 17.

Big strategy decision for USC coaching staff: Is it better to choke early in the season, or choke late?

Hmmm…

(1) No more excuses for the Dawgs: Joe Cox is healthy, and this is his third start. The Dawgs win or lose, as a team. Nothing more than instinct, but I predict Georgia over Arkansas, 24-17.

(2) SEC big game of the week. No more poor-mouthing the Gators by Mr. Kiffin. No more “no comments” out of Gainesville. No more talking of any kind. It’s time to play. Florida over Tennessee, 35-13.

(3) Another game that doesn’t need to be played. Alabama over mismatched North Texas, 35-10.

(4) West Virginia has played no one of consequence; Auburn has beaten Mississippi State (?). Hmmm. My gut tells me, Tigers over Mountaineers, 27-21.

(5) Well, here’s one of those games where we will learn something of consequence: Is Brigham Young worthy of being in the top 10 teams in the country? Maybe the top 2 or 3 teams in the Mountain West are worthy. BYU over FSU, 35-21.

(6) Boston College has thumped two nobodies. Clemson beat a nobody, and lost to a Georgia Tech that doesn’t look nearly as tough this morning. When in doubt, pick the home team: Tigers over Eagles, 27-17.

(7) Interesting intersectional match-up; should help the computer ratings services rank ACC and Big XII. I predict Nebraska over Virginia Tech, 24-21.

Tony,

1) The Oinkers are a program on the rise (at least until Bobby Petrino gets restless again). Georgia is a program in transition. Take the rise. Pigs win 38-17.

2) Lane Kiffin is young and inexperienced. Somebody should tell him that you win FIRST and then talk smack. He may not be at UT long enough to get things in that order. UF 70 UT 3

3) North Texas at UAT. Money game scrimmage for the packyderms.Bama 56 NT 7

4) WVU at Auburn. Auburn is not the team it was under Tommy Tuberville . On the other hand the Hillbillies are not the team they were under Rich Rodriguez. Gud Malzahn has the Auburn offense on the right track ,so we’ll say AU 31 WVU 17.

5) FSU at BYU. No amount of dadgums can help the tribe when they visit the light air and wild expectations of Provo this week. After losing to Miami,Florida State may have lost a lot of their will to win (judging by the weak attempt against jacksonville State) ‘Cougs 38- FSU 20

6) BC at Clemson. After watching them play Tech ,I figure that Clemson has 8 -10 wins in them this year. This should be one of them. Kitties win 41-9

7) Nebraska at VT.When all the precincts are heard from after Thanksgiving , this game could have a huge impact on where these two teams go bowling. New Years week in Florida or Boise ? ‘Huskers overcome a tough Tech team 17-14.

8) TT at UT (the other one). Tech won it’s once in a generation game against Texas LAST year. Now it’s back to being a pumpkin. Texas 31 Tech 19

9) Florida Atlantic at USC .There was a time when Steve Spurrier and Howard Schnellenberger played for much bigger stakes than a mid tier bowl game at the end of the year. Sad to see them in decline. Chickens win 41-9

10) SC at Washington. This is kind of like watching Kane from the old “Kung Fu” series try to snatch the pebble from the hand of the master and get… I don’t know ,a cookie or something. But instead of a cookie , the Trojans are going to put a beat down on the puppies. Tony , you predicted a close game ,are you high ? USC 48 UW 10

There are people expending way too much energy on Florida thrashing UT in order to teach Kiffin a lesson. Those that want to see Kiffin smashed are looking for someone else to do their bidding in the physical world while they have used their mouths to hide behind Mommy’s skirt. At least CLK hasn’t harped on this game like so many ‘fans’ have since. I hope for a good game but Tebow is one of the best ever and has had a better college run than Herschel. Hate to say it but in reality, Florida can only beat themselves, not only in this particular game but the whole season long… Nebraska has always been a team that garnered my interest. Truly, they had a great run back in the 90’s. Some of you will rejoice in the fact they knew Kiffin was coming to Knoxville, even way back in 1997 and whacked then #3 Tennessee in the Orange Bowl to capture the NC in the Coaches poll and finsihed 2nd to Michigan in the AP in the last season before the BCS took over (at least with the BCS we can get a consensus champion, huh?). Here’s to hoping they smack VT…Trap game for Georgia..? No such thing. For me this is a T Boone Pik’ems affair…Good luck to all.

I alsp don’t like pulling for the JORTS’ Nation, but you reap what you sow Kiffin, and you’ve reaped yourself a heap of trouble!!

What penitentiary are the Mormons visiting the Crimonoles at this weekend? One similarity between the teams is that each player from each school has about 3 kids. The biggest difference is that unlike the Criminole players that are 19-21 and unmarried, the BYU players are 26-27 years old and have 3 wives.

BC at Clempson- yawn ACC action it’s sucktastic!!

Nebraska at Va Tech- I like Nebraska in a CLOSE game, but give Va Tech credit for that out of conference schedule.

Jom Mora’s dream team keeps it closer than people think, but USC will still win by a TD or more.

And now for the big finale!!!!!

AU over the Toothless Nation 148-3. WVU kicks a late fumble after AU’s 7th string QB muffs the snap on what would have been an 84 yd pass play!!

Understand comparing these two are peaches and oranges. Yet if Tebow remains healthty and lawd knows I wish him no ill will, he’ll remain a greater overall impact player for Florida than Herschel was for Georgia…Now Colt McCoy is another of the same ilk as Tebow. Aren’t you a tad embarrassed with the animus displayed by most of those other mopes against TN? Maybe a little over the line, huh Tony? What about that talentless guy with the 90’s shaved head? Guy brings absolutely nothing to the table. And the former GA tight end (on another CSS show…calling Jonathan Crompton “Incrompetant”…Not your doing I know. Just wondered you think most of these guys play fair?
Clearly, TN bashing is in right now. Not sure the current level is good TV.

I think Urban hangs 50 on Lane.

UGA vs Arky The winners score in the 30s and the other team in the 20s. Is UGA battle tested or is Arky primed and tuned to play. We will see Saturday.

I hope for all of college football that FSU beats BYU but I’ll go with BYU.

UGA loses in another high-scoring game if the defense plays as poorly as it did last week.

The UGA defense is awful and there’s just no excuse for it. Soft Willie has got to go.

The D never stopped SC last week. SC stopped themselves. The D never had a clue.

UGA’s defense plays better this week, 34-13 UGA
UT plays UF tougher than everybody thinks (for 2 quarters) but can’t generate any offense. 45-10 UF
No contest for ‘Bama, 49-12 ‘Bama
Auburn has found an offense and has always had a “D”, 38-23 Auburn
(And this wasn’t on the list, but I stil like it!)
GT offense spins it wheels and Miami dominates as Paul Johnson reverts to name-calling, 33-17 Miami

Go Dawgs!

Has the tech punt returner gotten all of his um , ah, you know, um “issues” settled with the APD now? How did he skip those ra-e charges? Reminds me of the Pizza joint incident back in the early 90s where the tech players ( 3 ) pummeled a small girl and The Tech Fund folks had to “settle” with her our of court.

Canes pistol whipped that poor itty bitty Pop Warner O. tech’s D. No where. Laughing stock CPJ is.

Tony, agree with all of your picks except for UGA. The game will not be low scoring. I have said 27-20 Dawgs but now I believe UGA will lose a shootout and the WM clock will tick louder than ever. 38-35 Hawgs

Hope I’m wrong. It will be a shame for Cox and company to roll up yards and points and lose.

Watch out for Nebraska. They could pull one there.

Mr College football I know you read this so don’t act like you don’t. Gee big shock you go with Ga. Could just one time you act like you are not a Ga homer? Actually with the cupcakes played last week you should have done better. Stop bragging about your picks, cupcake games don’t count.

The Vols get crushed this weekend as do the Huskies…the Seminoles should beat BYU, i.e., too much speed…Georgia will have their hands full in Fayetteville…

12 NATIONAL TITLES – 21 SEC TITLES!!!

GT – tough game last night – looked out of sync. Miami really clicked and has depth in fantastic looking athletes – a very fast team.
Just a bad night for a team that looked tired and is banged up.

UGA – PIGS (who don’t care about their campus) vs HOGS!!! Just not sold on Willie Martinez defensive philosophy – let’s concede the field, the game clock, and keep them out of the endzone. 2009 appears to be the same typical Martinez defense – lot’s of penalities, no sacks, and giving up yards by the chunkage! UGA goes down in this one guys – will look like Tech – worn out and tired after two big time games.

UGA can win if:
- The GINGER ASSASSIN lites some fire underneath the OL and they can keep the ball away from Arkansas. Cox is a classic overachiever – hard not to root for this guy.

Hogs win this game by at least 10 – putting the icing with 4th quarter scores.

ROLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL TIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

G8R GRAD—-Trust me. It’s not Alzheimer’s or user error. I don’t understand it, but some days I cannot get the WordPress blog software to accept any of my posts that exceed a one or two-sentence paragraph. Like today, I will submit a numbered item post with short responses to each of Tony’s game predictions, but the post will never appear. If you resubmit the same post, you get a duplicate submission error message, which means the first post is in the system somewhere. It’s very weird. Even weirder, I could not get the software to accept my short comment on the South Carolina game, no matter how I rewrote or shortened it. After trying four or five times, I just gave up.

I have inquired of the AJC technical support feedback folks several times, and I have never received a response.

Hey Bama Stan – enjoy your comments! Agree that the DAWGS are going down Saturday in Fayetteville. Petrino is a fantastic coach and will exploit UGA’s defense and come away with a victory.

I think GEORGIA is playing for a winning season this year – 7-5 at BEST – could go 6-6 or 5 -7. GEORGIA is in transition and the DC is mediocre.

DAWGS will get beat by ARK, LSU, FL and AUB. Potential losses against TN (after LSU game) and KY and GT will have their shots as well. This team just does not look good and lucky to escape SC. Should be 0-2.

WDE!!!

Got 12?
