Bulldogs will win because they HAVE to

The first week of the season always has a bunch of easy picks and honesty compels your Fearless Friday Forecaster to admit that none of the tough picks went his way:

Picking Georgia over Oklahoma looked good after the first possession of the game. Then Oklahoma State woke up and the Georgia offense took a nap for the rest of the day.

The Florida State pick over Miami looked promising until the Seminoles dropped a touchdown pass in the end zone as time expired.

I really thought Wake Forest was going to beat Baylor 24-21. Instead it was the Bears, and QB Robert Griffin, who prevailed by the same score.

So that gives us a modest record of 7-3. And it will only get tougher from here on. So let’s press on with this week’s edition of the Fearless Friday Forecast:

1. South Carolina at Georgia: The latest internet rumor has Joe Cox selling barbeque sandwiches out on East Campus and Buck Belue coming out of the broadcast booth to start at quarterback against South Carolina. That’s not true and neither was the rumor that Logan Gray would start ahead of Cox against the Gamecocks. Cox starts. Gray plays. Georgia wins because it HAS to with a trip to Arkansas coming up next week. Georgia 17, South Carolina 10.

2. Mississippi State at Auburn: Auburn and its new coaching staff got a solid test against Louisiana Tech while Mississippi State was picking on Jackson State. The good news is that a rookie head coach gets to say he is 1-0 in the SEC. That will be Auburn’s Gene Chizik. Auburn 35, Miss. State 17.

3. Vanderbilt at LSU: LSU had better hope the 478 yards its defense gave up at Washington was not a sign of things to come. This will be closer than the experts think. LSU 28, Vanderbilt 20.

4. UCLA at Tennessee: Tennessee takes a significant jump in class after pounding a bad Western Kentucky team. The goal is the same: Establish the run to make QB Jonathan Crompton comfortable. This is all about getting ready for the Mighty Gators next week. Tennessee 31, UCLA 17.

5. Troy at Florida: I thought Troy might have enough athletes to at least make this competitive for a half. But the Trojans lost their opener to Bowling Green. We do know that Troy is better than Charleston Southern. Florida 45, Troy 14.

6. FIU at Alabama: Coach Nick Saban told everybody—players, managers, media, and fans—that we are not allowed to overlook FIU. The Golden Panthers, who were 1-23 in 2006 and 2007, rolled to an impressive 5-7 last season. Okay coach, whatever you say. This game is about working on the offensive line and making QB Greg McElroy even more comfortable. Alabama 42, FIU 3.

7. TCU at Virginia: After losing to Bill & Mary last week, things don’t look good for the Cavaliers of Al Groh as TCU comes to town. Every time a Mountain West team plays an ACC team it wants to make a statement: We deserve an automatic BCS bid, not you guys. TCU 28, Virginia 17.

8. Jacksonville State at Florida State: Bobby Bowden has had a lot of gut wrenching losses to Miami. Given the time and place in his career, Monday night’s 38-34 defeat to the Hurricanes has to be right up there with the worst. The Seminoles bounce back and get ready for a trip to BYU. Florida State 45, Jacksonville State 14.

9. Notre Dame at Michigan: The fan bases at these two schools began the season in a bad mood. Both were calmed down a bit when Notre Dame beat Nevada (35-0) and Michigan beat Western Michigan (31-7). If Notre Dame loses, then the Urban Meyer rumors start again. If Michigan loses the heat gets turned back up on Rich Rodriguez. Notre Dame has more athletes and a veteran quarterback (Jimmy Clausen). Notre Dame 31, Michigan 27.

10. USC at Ohio State: USC has won eight straight non-conference games on the road. The Trojans will play a true freshman quarterback (Matt Barkley) making his first start on the road. Ohio State’s Terrell Pryor is just a sophomore and will have to play well for the Buckeyes to have a shot in the Horseshoe. USC has too much speed. USC 28, Ohio State 20.

Good calls Tony the prognosticator, these are not “more difficult” picks as you say they are, these are obvious. Only 1 game is even a minor challenge to predict the outcome (UGA/SC) but the rest are simply obvious. Can I please take a crack at going up against you and your record……PLEASE????

Notre Dame falls flat as michigans athletes are in better shape, playing in a newly expanded northern cathedral of college football (the BIG HOUSE), and are juiced to get into the top 25. Notre dame = ooooooverrrrrated

Agree with the “have to” win by ‘Dogs Sat. pm. This MIGHT be one of the bigger games in CMR’s career. Lose, and there’s a real possibility of an 0-3 start. Bobby Petrino WILL outcoach CMR, so the players will need to be at their emotional best to win in F’ville. Currently, the ‘Dogs are a troubled program. If this Fabris guy REALLY thinks he can rationaize short kickoffs in the SEC, he needs to be replaced N-O-W. If the ‘Dogs have someone capable of kicking the ball into the endzone and do not choose to do so, that’s irrational behavior. As my bride asked last night, “what exactly does Mark Richt do duing the games?” I couldn’t answer, because I don’t know. The coaches need to get it together. It’s as if they hit the pause button last Nov. 28th, and hit play last weekend. Nothing has materially changed. Sat. evening will be interesting, to say the least.

I’m telling you, Florida and Bama, who appear to be the best of the SEC right now ought to have their butt’s kicked for these Schedules they are playing. It does not help the SEC. These patsies are week after week. Trust me, if Georgia were playing these and we were ranked in the top 10 , we would DROP EVERY WEEK IN THE POLLS. Hats off to Bama for VT, but check out the rest the next few weeks. I think there are a couple of Prison teams on there.

I like it, Tony. I predict you’ll go 9-1 this week. I like Mississippi State and Dan Mullen’s new offense over Auburn. And watch out, that Georgia/South Carolina game is going to be close. Real close. I say UGA just barely.

The Dawgs better find the fire and passion required to excel in major college football, or the Warrior Chickens will grease the skids for a huge downhill slide. With that being said, the Dawggies should dispatch USC in a second half surge. But, beware of Ol’ Steve Superior. He loves to hate Georgia, and he loves to beat Georgia, especially since UGA ruined his senior season by handing the Gators there only loss.

The phantom holding penalty screwed Clempson, and saved the bugs from defeat. The bugs do have some talent on the team, but they can’t afford to do the Jekyll & Hyde thing very often or it’ll be a disappointing season in the ‘hood – and PJ’s head will explode like a nickle balloon. Opposing coaches will be looking to have Nesbit run it more and throw it more as a recipe for squashing the bugs.

Why do we spend our time discussing the things that happen in Athens. Things ARE NOT going to change in any way at anytime.

It goes back to Florida 07. CMR jumpeed out of his shell and tried to do some things different and it blew up in face when his imagge took a hit. Then he spends the rest of the season ajnd entire off-season apologizing when he had nothing to apologize for. In is not in his character to change from vanilla to any other flavor. He tried it once and it bit him in the butt. He WILL NOT try it again.

It is what it is…vanilla. Georgia will win most of its games in any given year. They may win the East if UF and UT are down in the same year, not likley to happen now with those two head coaches. They may even win the SEC if the East and West are down, again, not likely. I don’t see another SEC Championship for Richt. NC – NEVER! My God, beating Tech will be as ahrd as anything from here on out.

VANILLA! So much for blowing the lid of the program. 02 potential, where did you go?

GT vs Clemson game was really good last night. I’m glad Tech won BUT most of their points came off of trickery. That wont work all year. To their credit though, I thought Clemson was going to come back for the vicotry but Tech held strong. It will be interesting to see the rest of their season. But I’m thinking a little bit overated and pretenders for the ACC, not contenders.

Tony-

1) I think this game means more to USC than to the Dogs. One thing we do know : UGA won’t see a better defense this season. If Steve Spurrier has another good game in him as a play caller ,it will be this one .I think SC wins an old fashioned game,1960’s style 14-10. If the Dogs lose here ,it will be look out below in the East.

2) AU is worlds better tha MSU at this point. Cow College cruises 31-10.

3) Vanderbilt will kick a late field goal that will give them just enough points to lose by 4 touchdowns. LSU 41- 10

4) They’ll be pouring them tall and cold at the Purple Porpoise this Saturday in Gainesville. By the second quarter ,Larry Blakeney may wish he could pick up a few to go. UF 196- Troy 7

5) UCLA brings its golden boy (Rick Neuheisel) into Rocky Top to take on Tennessee’s new wunderkind Lane Kiffin. Would anybody else rather see these two’s wives play in the Lingerie Bowl ?
Just asking…Vols win because it’s at home, but it’ll be colser than fans expect. UT 24 UCLA 10

6) Why is it that Florida Atlantic can field a decent team so soon after going Division I ,but FIU ,(just down I-95 ), is such a train wreck ? The Panthers take another whoopin on the road UAT- 54 FIU 7

7) Given the way things went in Virginia’s opener, The Al Groh Show should be sponsored by U-Haul , Mayflower and Two Men & A Truck this week. 7 months to prepare and they lose to…William and Mary ? TCU brings the pain 41-10

8) Jax State at FSU . hort week or no, the ‘Noles will win this one in a walk. FSU 54-10

9) ND at Meeechigan. Neither of these teams would be any better than the 5th best in the SEC,but you would think that this was the NC game for all the hype it has generated. Both are undefeated. Big deal , the leaves haven’t even changed yet. I guess ND wins ,but Michigan makes it a four quarter game. Hard to believe that an entire network will be devoted to this. ND 31- UM 19

10) USC at OSU . Ohio State got caught looking past Navy last week to the beating they will absorb from a real team this week at home. USC(w) 38 OSU 10.

I don’t want to hear people complain about Bama’s schedule because last year before the season all we heard about was how tough Bama’s schedule was with too many road games on top of it plus we heard how easy Florida’s schedule was.Nobody gave Alabama a chance and yet Bama proved everybody wrong winning 12 games in a row. But by the end of the year everything changed Bama had a easy schedule because the SEC was down, etc and after beating top SEC teams including Georgia and LSU. So I don’t want to hear all of the complaints about Bama’s schedule.

Mark this down…As long as Joe Cox starts and plays significant time as our QB, we are going to struggle on offense. Do you think that the “play calling” and no Moreno has suddenly taken us from a 30+ point average offense to this disgrace? I don’t. The receiving core sure hasn’t fallen off save some experience. Furthermore, the Spring Game was a preview to just how awful this offense was going to be. CMR said he thought the problem last week was “execution”. That means “players”, and I agree. Counting the Spring scrimmage, this offense has produced exactly 2 touchdowns in 8 quarters of play. One of those of course was garbage time, last 30 seconds of the Spring Game sprint by C. Thomas. So really one legit drive and TD. Primary problem is no down the field passing threat. 3rd down and longer than 7 yards and you might as well bring on the punting unit. Maybe we can work on a trick play, fake punt?? Work for the Techies…We’re sure gonna need something because I don’t think this unit can muster a TD drive against a legit SEC defense. Correction, I don’t think this “Joe Cox led unit” can muster a TD drive against a legit SEC defense. He’s got the heart, and maybe the moxy, but the arm’s not there and you can’t fix that with coaching.

Are we choosing speed over smarts and toughness? If CMR doesn’t challenge an obvious forward spot in a crucial time of the game, who is advising him from the booth… All that said i have had my confidence shaken, prove me wrong dawgs. I appreciate the fact Joe Cox has been waiting for his chance, but with no wheels and No arm, time is not on his side. stay in the pocket, use your weapons, or sit on the sidelines with a really good view of the game.

As long as any SEC team plays one conference top 20 team they should be good for strength of schedule. If they don’t make it to the championshion game then strength of schedule is really not important.

The SC ( not USC, as that is University of Southern Cal ) game will tell us all what we have or do not have.

It will reveal the ability or not to rev up player emotions ( home gae at night) Alamo mentality and the recollection of Bama last year. PRIDE should be the main factor. That comes from caring about your school and the program. That is a player thing. Do they have this??? UGA is 2-3 in our last 5 games folks. Not a good trend. Florida is the only good team that we were defeated by in this ugly 5 game run. OSU will end up in the top 17-20 only and a minor, minor bowl game.

It will tell us what Jumpin Joe Cox has or does not have. This is key, as they ( SC ) will be coming and he must be able to get his roller skates on and spiint out side looking down field to hit somebody. Can he do this? THIS factoid will be Joe’s achilles heel. He is small but slow.

Can UGA play special teams? Can we return punts w.o. a block in the back??? Are we gonna run the ball out from deep in the end zone???

Can we handle the ball on an easy pic? Can he hit w.o. a flag? See Reshad Jones and his history of cheap shots that lead to scores deep in our territory. Enough of that gang.

Can SC come in here and embarrass UGA? If this is SS last year, he will remember UGA by this one game. Can we forge his memory for years and years???

Big Tone,

As I sit here in my office getting ready to head to Athens this afternoon, I am totally and utterly nervous about my dawgs tomorrow. What if we come out and lay another egg? What if we make a stupid penalty and get beat by 1 or 2? The fans are already getting angry at the coaching staff and a bad loss could really make things ugly in Athens. I was at the Auburn game in the 90’s when the entire stadium booed the team at halftime for poor play and poor coaching. I don’t ever want that to happen again.

CMR has to win this game and has to win this game impressively. RX Dawg said it well….When was the last time our dawgs played a good or complete game? Many will say Michigan State but we looked like crap the first half. I can’t remember the last game my dawgs looked really good. Do you? That question is very disturbing to me and many other UGA fans and a loss this week would really turn the heat up on this coaching staff. Not to mention we could be looking at a 3-9 season dead in the face. Also, one thing I am going to watch is the alleged fighting between the coaching staff during the game. If the coaching staff is fighting then we truly have problems on the team. If the coaches are not on the same page how do you expect the players to be? I am not predicting the game this week, because I have no earthly idea.

He has a hateful passion for UGA like nobody. If he could do a half a hundred again that would make his season. Won’t happen but don’t think for a minute he smiles everytime he thinks about that one. When has UGA really looked good in a game? Answer ……………..Jax vs Florida in 2007 and since then, we have just played the game w.o. emotions. Maybe the Hawaii bowl game BUT as a Bulldog, I know that they were absolutley horrible and so vastly over rated then. They were pitiful. That bowl game does not count. The national writers were in love with the Rainbows. They would lose 10 games per year in the SEC and defeat Tech only.

2008 was a UGA disaster. We should have lost one or two games ………Bama and Florida. Tech? we laid down folks. went to sleep and that is the players and coaches fault. We also lacked a tough ass attitude toward Bama and partied all week prior to that game and we got blown out and deservedly so. Sabin take care of biz.

This year? SC will tell us everything that we need to know. We will be in one, tough, hard fought game with tons and tons of Norwood bringing it and we had better be ready for one physical game or else. Could be the beginning of the end for most of the UGA staf and they know it.

Fred,
I’m with you on your feelings about all of the coaching changes except Richt. Think back to when he first came here. He called the Offensive Plays and Muschamp then Van Gorder were our DCs. With less Blue Chip talent we played better, more intense, smarter ball.
Now we have better talent but Bobo & Martinez (and Fabris) calling all the shots.
Yeah, I know it’s Richt’s responsibility to have recognized this and made the changes necessary. As a matter of fact I blogged about it last year and was heavily criticized. I’m a ‘79 alum and want only the best for UGA and The Dawgs. If Richt would call the O plays and we could get a firebreathing dragon DC then all would change for the better. But Richt will have wasted yet another season at the expense of the players, school and fans.

Tony, yes the Dogs have to win, not just because of the trip to Arky next week, but to try to salvage a season. However, on the flip side, I think USC East feels the same way. The Evil one needs a win to finally keep his program out of the “gutter” of the SEC. I am guessing this one will not be a thing of beauty to watch,Offensively, that is, but if I had to put money on who out coaches whom, I’d have to go with the guy with the visor! It pains me to say this, but I need to be shown that CMR and his band of coaches can truly out coach someone.JMHO

He, (whoever it is), has two supposedly great young receivers at his disposal, and he doesn’t even know whether they got in the game or not? Kinda lame, me thinks! And, why did the coaches not insist the kick returner take a knee deep in the end zone rather than try to run it out. Maybe once, but repeatedly? Wow, no wonder we can keep a coaching staff together. Nobody else wants them!

I’m worried more about the Dawgs mental state than anything else. Can the beat Carolina by a TD or more? Yes they can. But how will they respond to the adversity of losing to a ranked opponent on the road? That I can’t answer. I think we’re going to find out what kind of character this team has, for better or for worse, in the next few weeks. When they get it in the mouth, will they pick themselves off the mat and get ready for round 2? Or will they feel sorry for themselves? Again I can’t answer that.

But I do know this: somebody needs to take command in that huddle. And it bothers me a little bit that Joe Cox flew out seperately from the team. I know he was sick, but I think that the team was a little discombobulated by that. And then I here reports that he was banged up this week, but should be good to go? What’s that about? A QB in a fragile mental state is a bad thing!

I personally have had no problem when Florida used to ring up the score on opponents in the past, including my beloved Dawgs. If a team is going to play like crap then they deserve it as far as I’m concerned. But I thought it was pretty hypocritical for Gator fans to cry foul during that endzone dance. If it bothered the team so much, then why didn’t they do something about it during the game? Yeah the endzone dance was a punch in the balls, and maybe it bit the Dawgs in the ass during that 49-10 loss last year( even though I thought the Gators won because they played better not because of some revenge factor). But the Gators have done the same thing to opponents over the years. You can’t cry foul when someone returns the favor. It’s the way karma works in football.

Tony — Picking games straight up is easy (especially in CFB), so don’t break your arm patting yourself on the back. If you want to prove you have some chops, pick based on handicaps and you will be doing something if you are above .500 — otherwise, anything less than .750 is not so impressive.

A few comments:

On the Tech game…fully enjoyed seeing Clemson come back on them. The gimmicks of PJ will only go so far. I think Clemson’s performance is a highlight of things to come against Tech.

Ohio State Fan: Richt didn’t tell his whole team to leave the bench. Without that…the incident was no different than any other teams players getting a celebration penalty. The point is Richt didn’t instruct anything. He apologized immediately to the SEC and the officials. He made it clear. Why should he have to continue to answer for it for a year? No other coach does when his players commit penalties. Urban Cryer didn’t and Timmy didn’t for the willful lack of sportsmanship they displayed when they played UGA last year.

On UGA-SC: We are going to lose if we don’t expand the playbook and play every down as if it is the last desperation gasp. I have come to believe that Richt is holding Bobo back…making Bobo coach they way Richt would. Richt needs to tell Bobo to open the playbook. I think we win if we make this game our SEC championship game and play with fire and intensity.

UT-UCLA : CLK did alot of experimenting with personnel last week on ST’s, DB, RB DL, etc. This week he won’t go as deep into his bench unless the score dictates, which historically speaking playing UCLA, won’t be the case. UT-UCLA have a background with UT holding the edge all time at 7-5-2 (I think)…Kiffin’s past at USC West will not allow this to be anything but a Tennessee win. UCLA QB Prince will find some gaps in Tennessee’s secondary/pass coverages but they will be gone in the second half. Tony, are Athens, Ga and Knoxville, Tenn the “tale of two cities” or what??? Last week, UGA went into top 10 ranked Oklahoma State in their new stadium and quite frankly, laid an egg. And it seems that just last week at this time, I was reading many comments on here how Georgia was going to go in there and thrash those Cowboys and send notice to the entire college football world. Certainly, the Dawgs dissappionted many, but last time I checked, Okie State was a pretty highly regarded team, weren’t they?? I believe they still are.. But now it seems that the “dawg day” is “over” and many who were wearing red and black glasses or at least silver britches in Athens are even wondering aloud if MAJOR changes should be made, even including the Head Coach. Their backs are now against the wall and if they don’t win this week, I’m sure that distant drum beat will grow even louder…….Then we go to Knoxville, where last weekend the Vols toppled the mighty Hilltoppers. I will say that I watched a good part of that game and Tennessee DID look very sharp and impressive. But will someone please enlighten me or at least educate me about WKU? Are they THAT good??? I looked at all my pre-season mags and rankings and could not find them in the top 10. Couldn’t find them in the top 25. Couldn’t find them in the top 50. The top 100 perhaps?? Nope. In fact, I’m starting to think they would only be slight favorites against mighty Charleston Southern (I know what you UT fans were thinking). Yet today in Knoxville is awash in optimism and many aren’t even slighty concerned with UCLA. In the bag, a blowout they say. As I read one Vol fan post this week, “We don’t need to worry about UCLA, we need to be game planning against Florida”. Another fan wrote, ” Florida is overconfident and that’s why we are going to go to the Swamp and beat them”. Yet another said, “It won’t even be close and will be fun seeing Tebow cry and making another speech”. WOW. Talk about overconfidence!! Like I said…A tale of two cities…

On paper, the Dawgs have the talent/potential to whip SC, but after watching the anemic offensive play last weekend (& last season’s meltdowns vs. Bama & GaTick) I am concerned UGA might fall flat. If the Dawgs don’t get it done, they’re indeed opening the door to a 5-6 loss season. I’d like to see much better in-game adjustments by Bobo & Martinez. Richard Samuel needs to maintain his balance after he gets past the first line of defense. Too many times against OK State, Samuel had the chance to break off the big run but got knocked down by defenders who merely “tapped” him. I can’t believe I’m resorting to these words but : Maybe, just maybe, we need Caleb King.

Also, Bobo needs to get a clue as to what type of offense he wants to run! Are we a running team, or an inefficient passing team? C’mon dawgs offense must be crisp. Because there will be no walking into the end zone against a stingy SC defense.

ReptilesRule,

Interesting take. While I agree WK and Charleston Southern are probably a draw (I’ve been following TN for a long time, and WKU was probably the worst time I have ever seen TN play), Vol fans are cautiously optmistic due to scoring some points. After last seems embarrasing, enemic, pathetic, and whatever else you want to use to describe TN offense, it was good to see. TN’s defense if very good, we know that; we will know a lot more about the offense after this week.

Despite the quotes, TN fans are very realistic by and large. I think if you asked 99% of Vol fans, most would agree they don’t really believe the Vols are going to win in the Swamp; just hoping for a good game.

6. Bama 56 FIU 7 I think the only way FIU scores is either by running back a kickoff to set up great field position or they wait until Bama puts in the 3rd string defense.

7. TCU 31 UVA 14 Score will make it look closer than it actually is. I’m thinking UVA scores a late TD against the backups.

8. FSU 41 Jax St 17 I wonder if the ‘Noles can figured out how to play defense on a short week.

LSU 2008 was not a complete game on both sides of the ball. True we scored 52 but the defense was putrid. We were gashed with big runs time and time again. stafford won that game along with Bobo’s play calling. We were all encouraged heading to J’ville and somehow Bobo went dumb one week after being a genius at Baton rouge.

But the question was about playing a complete game. LSU 2005(SECCG) was. LSU 2008 wasn’t.

It so happens that Florida seems to have an “easy” schedule. With LSU as the toughest game on the road. I am not sure why UGA schedule OK State as “First” game of the season. I agree with Tony. UGA wins because they have to. Program could melt down this season if they don’t.

LSU-Vandy- Vandy gives everybody a hard time but LSU has too much talent not to prevail.

Michigan-ND- ND gets exposed as the pretender it usually is. Lou Holtz saying ND plays in the national title game. Must be nice for ND to have their own Joseph Goebbels propagandizing for them.

USC- Too much speed and quickness for another plodding big 10 team in Ohio State

UT-UCLA- Pac 10 football is better than we SEC fans think but they are typically terrible on the road with the exception of USC. On the other hand I’m not impressed with UT beating up on the worst team in all of D1. UT is better but the idea that they are suddenly good is just a mirage. This could go either way.

Auburn over Miss. State. This should be interesting if for nothing more than to see how the 2 new spread offenses do. Everybody remembers 3-2 from last year. This should be much more entertaining.

Tony’s right: Georgia HAS to win (but WILL they!?). I expect it will be a typical, very tough and close UGA/SC game. As for Spurrier, forget last week: he will open up the playbook and throw some tricks Georgia’s way. He knows this is not NC State. Lest we forget, some pundits had his team as the #3 SEC team behind UF and UGA this year. I think that somehow, UGA will find a way to win. Perchance they “remember” some of the ways that they built that opening drive last week?
As for UT, VolMan, et al, I wouldn’t worry too much about UGA right now: that “new sheriff” as you call him has a (conference-wide, highly anticipated) date with destiny next week. UCLA will provide stiffer competition than you think though I think UT wins. However next week, UT is going to get the Gator’s A game and Urban Meyer will try to administer an historic thrashing on the Vols. The sportsmanship gods will hide their faces from this epic. The Vols are back? They defeated the 3rd worst team in college football (talk about “had to!”). For perspective, there were dozens of empty seats in Neyland Stadium last week as many of the Tennessee faithful are still “waiting to see.”
Back when UGA hired Richt I was certainly plussed–still am; though he now has history upon which he can reflect as well as to expectedly build. Nevertheless, UGA finds itself at a key juncture in the Richt era. This season has all the earmarks of broad change should things not materialize favorably–and quickly. I mention all that to say that while I think many admire moxie, one would be wise to curb the braggadocio until Kiffen & Co. do something significant (e.g. UGA’s 2001 signature win in Knoxville). Annihilating WKU does not suffice. Beating UF by ANY score? Now that would raise some eyebrows.

This is one Jacket fan eating a little humble pie after that second half showing on offense. Gotta be able to throw the football to keep the defense honest or we could be in trouble. Someone mentioned UGA should warm up on a lacky program before the SEC part of the schedule. Hitherto that has been the practice for a number of seasons. Actually the challenge of an Ok. JB,

Relax on the hatefest and whining over Bama and Florida’s schedules. I can’t speak much for the Gators except to say that they’ve always had FSU and in some years FSU and Miami in the same season. Not their fault that both have been down recently.

As for your criticism of us I suggest you take a harder look at UGA’s past schedules under Richt.
2001- Ark State, Houston, GT who you have to play every year.
2002-Clemson(7-6 mediocre), Northwestern State(AA), New Mexico State, GT
2003-Clemson(9-4), MIddle Tennessee, UAB, GT
2004-Ga. Southern(AA), Marshall, GT
2005-Boise State(9-4 in the WAC), LA-Monroe, GT,
2006-Western Kentucky, UAB, Colorado(2-9), GT
2007- OSU( 7-6 record, 4th in division), Western Carolina(AA), Troy, GT
2008- Ga Southern (AA), Central Michigan, Ariz. State(5-7 losers), GT
These teams are middle tier in their respective conferences and UGA scheduled them in years when they were mediocre at best. Clemson was 7-6, OSU 7-6, Colorado 2-9.Arizona State 5-7.
Boise was 9-4 playing in the wac and this was their worst year sandwhiched around 6 better years. There are probably a half dozen sec teams that would have gone 11-2 playing in the wac that year whose only 2 other decent teams are Fresno St. and Hawaii.

That leaves the Clemson team of 2003 at 9-4 as the only decent but not great team that UGA played ooc in the Mark Richt era. You can mention this year’s OSU team but everyone on this blog knows that they will lose to Texas, OU, probably TT, and maybe 1 or 2 other teams and finish barely in the top 25 if they do at all and probably 3rd or 4th in their own division. This is a team whose best record in the past 10 years is 9-4. I am not impressed.

Richt and Damon Evans do NOT schedule teams that historically figure to be in the top 3 of their respective conferences, ie the big boys.

At least Bama steps up to the plate and plays the big boys, teams expected to be either tops or in the top 3 of their respective conferences. Examples- OU in 2002-3, OU finished 12-2 both years and was no. 1 several weeks. UCLA in 2000 and 01 and FSU in 07 although both were not great and similar to UGA’s ooc opponents. In 08 we played 9th ranked Clemson which at the time was the ACC conference favorite. Not our fault they faded. We played ACC 2 time champion and preseason ACC favorite VT this year. And next year we play Penn State which won the big 10 last year and is the favorite to win the big 10 this year.

The Alabama name is a national brand name because throughout our history we have played marquee intersectional home and homes and one game matchups against national powers in their prime such as ND, USC, UCLA, Nebraska, OU, Ohio State, Penn State, Miami, VT, there are more I could mention but you get the point. Before UGA played a mediocre 5-7 ASU the dawgs had not traveled outside the immediate southeast during the regular season to play a big time opponent in 50 something years.

Do some research and start playing the top 1-3 teams in a bcs conference rather than the middle tier so so teams before criticizing Bama’s ooc record.

Spurrier had two extra days to get ready and he could have done it in seven. TCU will beat the daylights out of Va. kind of like Southern Cal did last year. Maybe it is time the ACC felt like they had to prove something and losing this game will make people wonder why the BSC free pass goes to the ACC. I think it is too early to be pronouncing greatness on the South Carolina defense. They may turn out to be very good, but my impression of NC State was that of a team without many offensive weapons. Russell Wilson, All ACC quarterback?? SC has some talented defensive ends, but I believe they start two freshmen in the secondary. They may be highly recruited, but there is a good possibility of some blown assignments in their second collegiate game.

Kam Fong,

Thanks for breaking it to us that we are not top 5 material and that we will lose 3 games. If we’re not top 5 then who is? Last time I checked that over rated OK State is 5th. Despite their win over the dogs this is a team whose best record in last 10 years is 9-4 and whose defense was 93rd last year. If you take a look at the teams behind us its very difficult to make the argument that any of them would be top 5 material and that we aren’t.

You say VT isn’t that great. Funny but they were talking national title run before the Bama loss. They also are the 2 time acc defending champion and also have the distinction, along with only Texas and USC, of winning 10 games or more over the last 5 years in a row. You should at least put your bias aside and realize that VT deserves some respect as a team that is consistently good.

Last time you checked Utah was running all over us. Fine. Last time I checked Utah was the nation’s only unbeaten team and finished 2nd in the nation. Still laughing. The mountain west counterpart BYU took down 3rd ranked OU and the game was tight long before Bradford got hurt.

And BTW, who exactly can beat us that we will finish with 3 losses? You can’t possibly be talking about the regular season. Its possible that we could drop one game, lose to UF in the seccg, and drop a bowl game against a really good opponent and end up with 3 losses. But if you think this Bama team loses 3 games in the regular season then I would like some of whatever you’re smoking.

I suggest you pay more attention to the Crimson Tide.Just becuse you predict 3 losses for Alabama does not mean much but I would’nt do it because it can make you look like you don’t have much football knowledge. This is a new Alabama team this is not a Mike Shula coached team with reduced scholorships and its time you realized that.I bet you were one of the ones predicting Bama would not do well last year eventhough there were signs the previous year(07) that Bama was on the rise, sure Alabama my have sputtered toward the end of the 07 season with depth problems plus 4 players suspended(text books)on top of it but desite that Bama was in every game and nobody beat Bama by more than 7 points including LSU and even Georgia by 3.Depth probelms are behind us now thanks to two number 1 recruiting classes in a row. You may not like the Crimson Tide but you obviously don’t know what you are talking about.

Cmon, don’t rspond to that trash mouth stuff. Dag nabit, you look like a bunch of luzers tyrin to justify all of Tide folks. Heck we could be coaching there cept for that dang Monte Kiffn and his lying crap. U knnnow that son of his is just a lazy no good SOB jst like his daddy Monte. Monte is a bwimp, I whipped his tail coachin, playin and on the 50 yard line at NC State. He is a wimp and ther anin’t no way they will ever beat bama, much less whop my tail. You youngsters leaave ths gum flappin to those Tenn and Gerogie mamas boys. All of these negative comments will disspear when we start winning. It always does until the next loss comes along. As far as the players not playing hard. All the teams are having trouble with that. Bama laid down in the Bowl game with its loss. As for Fla. Urban is a Master at Brain Washing those kids. He doesn’t care nothing about them. Just winning! Van Gorder was also a good motivator. He had the “hardest hits” awards, etc. At Ga we have the Sunday school attendance awards and the best Bowler and swimmer awards. And Richt, wonders why the team isn’t playing hard. Go figure!.

I aggree with most of the picks, however AUBURN scoring 35 against a SEC D is a stretch. I believe the LSU-Vandy could be an upset, but LSU will make just enough plays, but the score my be closer. Notre Dame does have a cupcake schedule but are not overrated. Jury is still out on Weis, this season will show if stays or goes. Michigan is not quite up to snuff yet, the only advantage they have is that it’s a home game but it won’t be enough. The Irish have the best recieving corp in the country and Clausen name will be in for the Heisman in another couple of weeks. If the Irish are undefeated going into the USC game they will rip SC a new one and be in the NC game. Sorry, South Carolina wins easily over a weak UGA. Soft Willie’s defense can’t stop anyone or at least make a big play when it has to. Read and react, bend but (don’t) break, puts too much pressure on the offense. Speaking of the offense, its just not there with Samuel who seems to be unable to break the tackle of a painted yard line and Cox who has no arm. Look for South Carolina to stuff our offense and pretty much move at will against the defense. USC 24 UGA 10

Gen. Neyland,
Me thinks you may have missed my point: rather than taking UT to task for opening with a lacky–my homily was merely an attempt to address reading too much into dismantling said lacky, which I believe was done by another Tennessee supporter. Also pointed out that such games for UGA had been the practice for some time until this season (i.e. “hitherto”). My own preference is to have none of these “breather” games but I am merely an observer; not a participant. As for Florida I agree with you. They have practiced this for years (indeed it continues to do so as I type).

Have one good season and y’all come out of the woods beating your chest.
On an Atlanta, GA. blog.
Paul Finebaum called and wants y”all back over there on his blog.

Lil’ Joe,

Bama was more competitive than some in the SEC even during the most draconian NCAA sanctions handed down since the SMU ‘Death Penalty’. As for posting on an Atlanta blog, the Tide now pays property tax on the Georgia Dome as well as on Rocky Top — so we have certain rights here.

I understand that Larry Langford and Gene Chiznik have proposed that Lee County be annexed into Georgia. The proposal has support from all parties involved since studies have shown that the average IQ of both Alabama and Georgia would increase as a result of the annex.

September 13th, 2009
12:42 pm

WOW!! A crappy, 4-win, weak-sister PAC-10 team came all the way from tinsle-town to the big bad SEC, and walked out a winner!?! How in the heck did that happen??? Oh wait, let me guess…… b/c UT is a “bottom-feeder” in the SEC, and UCLA is a power-house from the 2nd best conf. in America.
But I will bet this …… UT-UCLA is a far better game for the school(s) and the fans than is UF-Troy, or UF-Charleston Southern, or UF-vs. the other jokes.

UF gets the “red carpet” route to the NC game b/c the only losable games on their schedule are the ones in their OWN conference! And we’ve seen the past few seasons with the so-called “experts,” not the players & games, deciding who plays for the NC, that it’s okay to LOSE games as long as you play in SEC, and LOSE only to SEC teams. Kind of a joke …. let’s get a playoff.

Get a playoff, and you still get GREAT match-ups like UT-UCLA, UGA-Ok St, USC-OSU, AZ St-UGA, VT-Bama, b/c these losses won’t kill your NC chances. Otherwise we’re going right back to padded schedules full of “cupcake” opponents.

PLUS, it was how many pts vs. FSU that “his” leadership was responsible for? Oh, yeah — 9! But I guess it was HIS stellar play on D that held FSU to 6 pts through 56 minutes of played. Guess he got tired that last 4 minutes……

You’re a genius.

Georgia’s defense reminds me of a sieve. The holes in its defense are meant to encourage teams to believe they can win. Too often many teams benefit from far too much encouragement. Fortunately, the Dawgs barely sealed enough holes on Saturday against SCarolina to conserve a win. They might do better if they used a different strategy.

It is rather curious that Coach Richt doesn’t think it’s necessary to effectively cover, if not rush the punter. A coach with the most modest intelligence would certainly learn such a lesson after getting embarrassed in the Chik Filet Sugar Bowl against West Virginia. Perhaps he underestimates the mental acuity of opposing coaches in observing that the defense is abandoning the line of schrimmage on punts. Very interesting!!
