Nobody asked me but:
1. The ACC really needed that Florida State-Miami game: I’m not saying this was the worst opening the weekend the ACC has ever had. But it has to be in the top two. There were losses to two Colonial Athletic Association (Division I-AA) teams-Richmond (beat Duke) and William & Mary (beat Virginia). Maryland got smoked at California (52-13). Wake Forest lost at home to Baylor (24-21). No. 7 Virginia Tech, the favorite to win the league, lost to No. 5 Alabama (34-24) in Atlanta. N.C. State, a dark horse pick to win the ACC Atlantic, could find no offense and lost to South Carolina, 7-3. The only win over a Division I-A opponent was Clemson over Middle Tennessee State of the Sun Belt. The rest of the ACC wins came against Northeastern, The Citadel and Jacksonville State. It’s a good thing that Miami and Florida State played such a great game (38-34) Monday night. It salvaged the entire weekend for the ACC.
2. This is a big week for the Big Ten: The Big Ten was 1-6 in bowl games last season and didn’t get off to a particularly good start un 2009. Ohio State had to fight for its life to get past Navy (31-27). Iowa had to block two kicks at the end of the game to beat Northern Iowa. (17-16). Illinois just got waxed by Missouri (37-9). Wisconsin struggled to beat Northern Illinois (28-20). The Big Ten can certainly bolster its reputation this weekend as Ohio State hosts USC and Michigan hosts Notre Dame. But odds are the Big Ten goes 0-2 in those games.
3. Yes, there are already coaches on the hot seat: It’s hard to believe but there is no getting away from it. Al Groh has to be feeling some heat after his new spread offense was all but shut down by William & Mary and the Cavaliers lost to the I-AA team 26-14. Ron Zook took Illinois to the Rose Bowl two years ago and was expected to be better with quarterback Juice Williams and seven other offensive starters returning. The Illini got embarrassed by Missouri (37-9). Lost in the headlines about the post-game fight in the Boise State-Oregon game was the fact that Oregon, thought to be a challenger to USC in the Pac-10, was simply awful. Chip Kelly is a first-year head coach and his team looked totally disorganized. This list is only going to grow.
4. From now on BYU is pulling big time for Oklahoma, Florida State: No question that BYU is in the BCS discussion after Saturday night’s 14-13 win over Oklahoma. But the Cougars need for Oklahoma (0-1) and Florida State (0-1) to bounce back. Florida State goes to BYU on Sept. 19. If the Cougars win that one they have a real shot to go undefeated because they have TCU, Air Force, and Utah at home. FYI: BYU does have a shot at making the BCS championship game if it goes undefeated. But if the SEC champ and the Big 12 champ are also beaten, they go to the big game and BYU is the odd man out. That’s a no brainer. But to win points in the computer polls, BYU needs for Oklahoma and Florida State to finish strong after losing their openers. Such are the odd bedfellows created by the BCS.
5. Suddenly, I am concerned about the LSU defense: I spent the summer saying that the LSU defense, which finished ninth on the SEC in scoring last season, would be better under new DC John Chavis. Chavis is a pro and I saw a lot of great athletes still in Baton Rouge. Then the Tigers go out to Seattle and give up 478 yards in a lackluster 31-23 win at Washington. But I still think the LSU defense is going to be okay. Washington has a veteran quarterback in Jake Locker, a player I really like. The Huskies were playing with a lot of energy for new coach Steve Sarkisian. And to go all the way out to Seattle, the longest road trip ever for LSU, and get a win should be enough. Let’s see how LSU does against Vanderbilt on Saturday.

Question Tony, Do you believe that Richt’s job may be ended soon especially if he continues to coach a team that has so much talent so poorly?
I have nothing against Richt other than his poor coaching. Shula at Alabama was run off for poor performance, Phil Fulmer was run off for the same reason. Why not Richt?

All of you “fans” calling for Mark Richt’s job are I-D-I-O-T-S. ((take out the hyphens and it spells “idiots”). You are not real UGA supporters at all. Your worthless, pathetic lives are centered around whether you get your ego stroked by the team you follow winning on Saturday. OSU is good. We have known that for a long while. It was certainly no surprise that they beat UGA in their own stadium in their biggest game in years. But after 60 minutes of football ,you want to throw away 9 years of hard work and program improvement because you think that there is someone better just hanging around waiting for your call? Maybe you don’t remember what things were like in the long span between Dooley and Richt ,but I do. No SEC championships, perpetual also ran status and being content with 8-3 seasons (played 11 in those days). Richt is a dramatic upgrade from those days.
Good thing that UGA is not a democracy, because the mob wants a new man at the top after every loss. High standards and big expectations are good , but you people are fools. You are the very definition of “fair weather fans”.
I am really tired...
September 9th, 2009
7:02 am
…of Richt and the AJC writers saying that UGA needs “more” receivers. Richt says 4 is not enough – good grief, we only play 2 at at time, so four is plenty. If they get tired (and how could they when the offense goes 3 and out every other series).
Then he says they want to spread the ball around – well, duh, tell that to the QB, all Bobo can do is call plays, if he keeps calling them for the guy (Green) who is double covered all day then that is a coaching problem, not a fault with the receivers and their abilities.
Coaching, coaching, coaching – see Meyer, Saban, Peterson(Boise State), Carroll, Brian Kelly(Cincy), the guy at Utah, and – oh I hate to say this – but even Johnson at Tech if you want to see what real coaching is supposed to look like.

Indeed, “Let’s see how LSU does against Vanderbilt on Saturday”.
On Saturday in Death Valley, David may just stand up and slay Goliath.
For certain, we will learn if LSU’s defense is as bad as it looked against the Huskies. And we’ll learn if Vanderbilt’s offense is as good as it looked against the Catamounts. The answer to both is probably no; however, Bobby Johnson has coached against John Chavis for 8 years now and Vandy’s defense is improved over their outstanding defense of ‘08 which won 4 SEC games and single handedly beat Boston College in the Music City Bowl. (Don’t forget, BC played for the ACC Championship last year.)
If Vanderbilt wins in Baton Rouge, it will be because Coach Johnson ‘out coached’ Les Mile & John Chavis.
Tune in to ESPNU Saturday night because ‘there’s gonna be a rumble on the bayou’.

You Dawg fans need to back off the negative remarks about Richt and his staff. The first game was away, playing a top ten team, with a sick and inexpereinced QB. Give Cox a chance. The kid hasn’t started a game since he was a senior in high school. UGA’s only loss in the SEC East this year will probably be to UF (maybe). Play each game one at a time and when the season is over, compare the W’s and the L’s. I predict a 10-3 or 11-2 season. At worst, 9-4. Not bad after losing Stafford and Moreno. Keep it in perspective. You fire Richt and then what? Another disaster like Michigan and Rodriguez?

No, bull-gator – we fire Richt and we get someone like Peterson from Boise State or Kyle Willingham from Utah, and then we see whether UF continues its mastery over UGA! Until then, it looks like UF will continue to own us!

The UGA fans who have been blasting the coaches and the players need to grow up fast. Your immature and ingrateful attitude for everything Coach Richt has done for Georgia needs to come to a halt. You are doing the program you love more harm than any loss or any scandal. You contribute nothing positive to the program. Jealous of Florida or Alabama? Then go be a fan! And when they have a down year go be the number one fan of the number one team somewhere else. That way you can contribute nothing and never know what it means to have goal to work towards. You know, I would very much like to have the opportunity to see Coach Richt and the players come into your job, and into your home, and observe your execution. Let’s see how you do in your life. The first time you make a mistake, I hope they scream for your job. I hope they write letters to the newspaper hoping that your wife divorces you and that your children never speak to you again because you are such an embarrasement to the family “program.” You p**s poor fair weather UGA fans screaming about Joe Cox or Coach Richt know nothing about anything except that you are a fool. I’ll take a wait and see attitude and see what the next 2-3 games look like. I was encouaged by the D. The offense and questionable calls put a little damper on their performance. I’m concerned we got NO pressure from the edge against a big 12 so so line. We must blitz more than twice a game. I don’t think we have the studs to shut down a passing game when the QB is under NO pressure. Bobo scares me. A high school coach could call a better game.

The most telling statistic about a Chavis coached defense is 3rd down conversions. For too many years I have seen way too many 3rd and 7’s converted because of d-backs playing 10 yards off the line. I know Coach Chavis is a fine coach and a good man, but from someone who has screamed at the tv and at him in Neyland his “Mustang Package” does not work.

Tony, your obsession with putting down the ACC is pathetic and insane. The ACC is just fine. Anything can and will happen on the football field…that is why they play the games.
Why don’t you talk about how one of the top SEC teams went out to play a lowly big 12 team (you know the league that plays no defense) and beat the crap out of the sec team.
Bottom line the ACC beat the sec 6 out of 10 last year in the regular season and will win the majority out of 7 games this year.
The sec is the most overrated overhyped league ever. But you have a problem. Ga Tech is the only team in the nation that is voluntarily playing three sec teams and will beat the crap out of all three. So much for the sec hype.

Tony,
I know this blog is mostly about SEC football, but what is your take on the new defensive coordnator at OKST? I would say he did a better job preparing his team than your boy Chavis did for LSU. I know UGA is not the offensive juggernaut of last year, but give a little credit to the OKST defense. The way their cornerback covered AJ Green was classic. This allowed the defense to move other people around and take chances on other plays. USC may have a good defense, but I think the OKST defense will be the best we see until fl. LSU did not look particularly good against a team that just lost its 15th straight game. I wish the Dawgs had played Washington!!
p.s. Why do all of the sportswriters get so worked up about a team travelling to Arizona or Washington to play? Do the players run to the game or do they take a three hour plane ride?

Comments in response to Tony —-
(1) Yes, it did. That was probably the most entertaining FSU-Miami I have watched in 7 or 8 years. This what this game (and the ACC championship game) were supposed to look like every year.
(2) No, the Big Ten did not look so big and tough against the likes of Navy, Northern Iowa, and Missouri. Thank heavens for the MAC, eh, Mr. Delaney?
(3) Ron Zook on the hot seat, huh? The more things change, the more they stay the same.
(4) I still have memories of BYU winning the 1984 national championship by going 12-0 in the old WAC and beating a 6-5 Michigan team in the Holiday Bowl. BYU was a media darling that didn’t deserve to be the attention based on the weak schedule they played. If BYU is going to catch even a whiff of the BCS title game in 2009, I expect the media commentators to give BYU a heck of a lot more scrutiny now than they did 25 years ago.
(5) Chavis is a great defensive coach and he has the talented personnel at LSU. The Tigers’ defense will shake off their opening game jitters and get better and better as the season progresses. Bet on it.

It just gets dumber and dumber every day with Tony Brain-fart.
This notion that “the ACC needed (this) shootoout.”
Folks, FSU & Miami are not BACK. What I saw was dreadful Pass Defenses getting abused by a pair very medicore QBs.
2003, 2004, 2005 FSU-Miami games were snoozers b/c of the low scoring.
The 2008 game score was 41-39. Not much different than 38-34. The 2008 game was a much better game. FSU winning 24-0 in 2nd Qtr and Miami rallies to a near win with a 41-39 FSU win. If Miami has recovered the late game onside kick that game would have gone down as one of THE biggest come from behind victories for either team.
But, the 2008 game was played at 3:30 on a Saturday, in a torrential downpour, in Miami at Dolphin Stadium. Three things: bad weather, bad time, and Miami fans cant fill Dolphin Stadium.
What made the big difference for the 2009 game was:
1. Game was AT NIGHT on a Holiday, with no other competing college games
2. At Doak-Campbell: Large home crowd
3. Good Weather
4. Lots of scoring
5. Lots of lead changes
I said (6) freakign weeks ago LSU had a defense problem. Chavis aint all “that.” He is a medciore DC at best, and its gonna show…soon.
ANd, I said that UW had a chnace to puill an upset vs. LSU. UW certainly gave’em a scare.

I agree with TSJ on the Miami-FSU game. The defense was pitiful. Bobby Bowden is definitely past his prime, but why does Mickey Andrews get a pass? Receivers were running around wide open all game for both teams. Miami is paper thin at QB. If Harris gets knocked out, their only remaining QB is a true freshman. I’d like to see GT blitz Miami, ala John Tenuta. But first we must take care of bidness this Thursday.

Are you serious? When the SEC plays each other they worry about knocking each other out of the National Championship picture? Surely you’re kidding? I guess everybody has to worry about knocking UF out…since UF doesn’t play anyone outside of the conference though there is no other alternative. But just who else in the SEC is “in the national championship picture”? And please don’t give me Alabama. They beat crap Clemson team last year and ran through the SEC…big deal. They then got exposed by a freaking team from the WAC conference?
So besides FLA…who the hell is getting knocked out of the national championship picture? UGA? please. Kentucky? Auburn? Arkansas? LSU? Vandy? You’re a moron.

I commented yesterday at work on the UM/FSU game, that you almost get the feeling that both teams are back. That was easily the best game of the opening weekend. It had everything that you would want ina game. All three facets of the game of football was on full display by both teams. The only downside to that game was that there had to be a loser. The ACC gets a bad rap from my fellow SEC brethern, but that game was what was orignially susposed to happen when Miami joined the ACC. I will now be watching the ACC a little more closely this season.

You dumb UGa hill-billies should have fired Richt after that debacle of a season you had in 06 and hired me. The results, after I had a season to put my system in place, speak for themselves. Started 12-0 in 08….including a beat-down of the Puppies in their own yard, and currently ranked #2 after a beat-down of the supposedly tough (but really pussified) VT. Eat your hearts out, Pups…You’ll never be the Big Dawg on the block as long as Richt….(or, is it Greg Louganis?) is in charge. UGa……29 consecutive years of riding on Herschel’s past deeds.

After one game, I wouldn’t be overly concerned about much unless I got blown out. At the same time, I wouldn’t be popping off in a bragging mode if I won by 45 either. Coaches attack game one gameplans a bit different than the week to week season schedule, especially from an offensive standpoint. If a defense has flaws, they’ll get exposed a bit. This was Chavis’ first opportunity to call a game with a new group under fire. He’ll mould it. From a fundementals standpoint, win or lose, staffs now have a better understanding of what they actually have to work with. Game two bears a heavier burden to heal Achilles’ Heels and locate some punch if lacking on opening day and for most, within a week, not weeks.

I guess since GT will never ever lose another game and nobody can beat the mighty gators, the MNC is set.Everyone else should just chill out and have fun playing for a decent bowl. As the pre 1990 gators used to say, “wait ’til next year”.
Not Disappointed!

Excellent read Tony.
Miami FSU game was exciting game. I do believe the GT Clemson game should be good, but I don’t know about exciting.
Ohio State Navy game was something. I don’t know about USC this week. They should win, but may not be a top 5 ten so early. ND Mich game will be exciting. That’s a game to watch.
See some you at the Flats tomorrow.

Mr peter graves. I doubt we go bowling this year. If we win 6 and are invited to a turd bowl ( any Tech fan would know what I mean by that) I hope we decline. The ONLY reason we might go is you get that extra 2 -3 weeks of practice. I’m hoping Richt will be at the Blue/Gray game in Birmingham or what ever they call it ( senior bowl maybe ?) and he’s INTERVIEWING COACH’S.

This absolutely beautiful!! Watching mutt nation in total disarray after one game. Priceless!!
Yes, ole Coach Butt Cut looked pretty good coaching against Ron Zook, Mike Shula, and Chan Gailey. Now there’s Saban, Urban Myer, and the best of them all – Paul Johnson and he doesn’t look so hot now does he?

LSU is going to have to prove they can win without Saban’s players. It seems like the more and more LSU loses Saban’s players and becomes more Les Miles in nature it is sliding down from where they were.LSU fans hate to hear it.I won’t bash them too much just because of their first game because they did win but it does’nt look good right now for LSU.It is going to be interesting to see if their defense is improved over last years defense but so far it does’nt look good.Perhaps it was first game jitters plus the traveling, we will see as the season moves along.
we had a great gameplan, but failed to execute.

maybe this next week our players will be able to execute the gameplan. if so, watch out, carolina…we have the best gameplans in all of college football….we are the national champions of gameplanning.

Ignore guys like Trade School who don’t have a clue. Miami and FSU are back, and these teams will only get better and better as the year goes on. Both are young teams w/ alot of talent. Miami will beat GT next week and suddenly the VT and OU games look much more manageable. FSU has BYU in 2 weeks and if they win there, which they should, than there is a top non conference beaten. What you saw on display Monday night was only the beginning. The Miami offense under Mark Whipple is going to be lights out and Ponder for FSU is going to have a good year. And if Trade School had any clue, he would know that Miami was w/o 3 starting players on the defense, 2 DE’s and 1 free safety. They came up big when they had to make a play and thats why they won. The Miami D will be fine. If Miami and FSU play again in the ACC title game, the ACC will be fine. If we have another GT/Wake Forest title game…YIKES!

Ok Tech fans, I know some of you understand market values, economics etc. Let’s say Johnson does win 10 games this year and 10 the next. At 2.5 mil, that’s minimum wage in big boy football. Is a highly respected learning institute going to justify a 5 year, 30 million dollar contract for Johnson ? Yes, he’s good but I don’t think he’ll hang around the flats for 2.5 mil a year LESS because HE LIKES YA’LL !!!!!! I’m serious. Will the Nerds have the nads to pony up that kind of contract. Trust me, it’ll take that. I say not. Enjoy the ride……

FSU has a better d line but their secondary is no where near as good as gt’s. You idiots that continue to knock the triple option. Did you see navy nearly knock off Ohio st? GT has even more weapons on offense this year plus a better passing game. With ga’s offense being in the cash for clunkers program, it’s going to be an easy win in November.

So JB your fellow nimrods say no one wants his high school offense, yet you say they will pay 5 mil a year for it? You ga fans are the most contradicting dysfunctional bunch of fans out there.
memo to your morons..pj is the highest paid coach in the acc now. so enough with the minimum crap. you are obviously a clueless dolt.

Does anyone know what the remaining ACC vs. SEC matchups are this year?
Also, it seems like some fans are trying to have their cake and eat it too. I don’t think you can say that the conference can’t be judged by poor performances of lower teams (Duke, UVA, Maryland, WF, NCState) and then turn around and brag about a regular season record against the SEC when the W’s are over the likes of Miss. St. and Vandy. In my opinion, the relatively even matchups are the one’s the conference clash should be judged by. Off the top of my head that would be Bama-VT, UF-FSU, UGA-GaTech, etc. That’s why I’m curious about what the remaining matchups are.

The FSU/Miami game was a great game but I could’nt help but think where is defense? Both teams need to tighten up their defenses.Kindof reminded me of a Big 12 game – Good offense, not so good defense.

Chavis allowed a mediocre team PAC9 team to put big yards on his SEC team? Sounds like he is doing what he did at Tenn. against Cal and UCLA. Chavis is overrated.

I think you had a typo… ” FYI: BYU does have a shot at making the BCS championship game if it goes undefeated. But if the SEC champ and the Big 12 champ are also beaten, they go to the big game and BYU is the odd man out. That’s a no brainer.” I believe you meant “unbeaten”, instead of “beaten”.

LSU fans will now see what UT fans watched for years. Chavis is a steady DC but horrible in late game situations. I watched more teams convert 3rd and long. UW converted 11-19 3rd downs. Get used to the mustang package in the 4th quarter.

Ball coach has tight lips, he knows he can be 2-0 after Sat. This would create melt down from Ga.fans. The pressure is on Ga. and their backs are against the wall. They can not go 0-2. Fulmer may be in VA. next year.

I see M is still in denial, still doesn’t count bowl games and still can’t handle the truth about the ACC. The first week of the season for the ACC is just a continuation of the ACC’s performance in last year’s bowl games. The teck illusion will come to an end on thursday when Clemson stuffs them at home and Miami will end the dream next week.

YT you are an idiot! Obviously you are a GT homer and you see things alot different through those GT colored glasses. In case you didn’t look at the schedule, Ohio St. has USC this week and I am sure the true focus was not on Navy and the vaunted triple option that they run. Ohio State did enough to win and thats all they needed to do against a gimmick offense and a sub-par team. And there was more talent on the field Monday night than GT will see in 10 years. The gimmick triple option GT threw out might have snuck up on people last year, but like the beat down LSU gave GT last year in the bowl game, its easily defensible when done properly. GT will not come within 2 TD’s of Miami next week and its debatable what will happen against Clemson tomorrow night. Miami and FSU will both be at a minimum 9-3 and both be playing each other again in the ACC title game. If we have to watch another sorry title game of GT/Wake again, god help us all and god help the ACC.

Charlotte the only game that was bad was the Va game. Richmond is ranked 1 in the 1aa poll. Cal is a top 15 team. Maryland beat them last year so it was revenge. If you actually followed football, you’d know that Baylor has the fastest qb in the game and was predicted to be a good team this year. So it was no surprise they won. The line was only 3 to wake.
