LSU-North Carolina agree to play in 2010 Chick-fil-A Kickoff

Greensboro, N.C.—Here’s some news and notes from the first day of the ACC Football Kickoff for 2009:

LSU-North Carolina at Georgia Dome in 2010?: Looks like the Chick-fil-A College Kickoff is headed for another blockbuster ACC-SEC matchup.

Two people close to the discussions told me Sunday night that North Carolina and LSU have tentatively agreed to play in the Chick-fil-A College Kickoff on Sept. 4, 2010 at the Georgia Dome.

North Carolina and LSU have indicated to the Atlanta Sports Council that they will play in the game if some scheduling issues can be resolved to open up the date for both teams. Those issues are expected to be resolved.

The Chick-fil-A College Kickoff began last season with Alabama’s 34-10 win over Clemson in front of a sold-out Georgia Dome and a national television audience. This season Alabama and Virginia Tech, both expected be in the most preseason Top 10s, will meet on Sept. 5 in another hard sellout.

LSU and North Carolina have met six times in their football history with LSU holding a 5-1 lead in the series. The last meeting between the two schools was on Oct. 25, 1986 in Baton Rouge.

Tennessee and N.C. State have already agreed to play in the Chick-fil-A College Kickoff in 2012.

Virginia Tech-Alabama huge for the ACC: How big is Virginia Tech’s Sept. 5 game with Alabama at the Georgia Dome?

For the ACC, it is as big as it gets.

A year ago Clemson, which was a consensus preseason Top 10 program and the standard bearer for the ACC, played Alabama in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff. The Tigers didn’t just get beat. They got embarrassed (34-10).

“We had a tough time getting over that one,” said Clemson running back C.J. Spiller. “We got kicked pretty good on national television.”

Clemson didn’t get over that game and by midseason Tommy Bowden was no longer the head coach.

The ACC has not had a real national championship contender since Florida State lost in the Orange Bowl to Oklahoma after the 2000 season. Virginia Tech, the defending ACC champs and preseason Top 10 pick, would appear to be the league’s best shot for a team to run the table. But in order to do that the Hokies have to beat Alabama in the Georgia Dome.

“We know that we’re representing the ACC in this game,” said rover Kam Chancellor. “We know how competitive the SEC is and that they’ve been whippin’ on the ACC for a while. Alabama is a power house with a lot of great athletes. We are going to go down there and five it our best shot.”

Mark your calendars: Playing the Florida Gators, the defending national champions and preseason No. 1 for 2009, is never an easy assignment. But Florida State will have the unenviable task of playing at Florida on Nov. 28. Barring injury, that will mark Tim Tebow’s final home game in a Florida uniform.

“That is already a tough place to play,” said Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder. “You know it will be crazy game. Our job is to make it a close game because we can’t worry about what Florida is doing. We’re trying to get Florida State back on top.”

Ponder, who is a junior athletically, has already completed his undergraduate degree and is in the second year of his MBA program at Florida State. His father, David, played defensive line at Florida State from 1980-83.

Who made this schedule? There is a pretty strong consensus that Miami will be a better football team in the third year under coach Randy Shannon. Shannon has hired a pair of new coordinators in Mark Whipple (offense) and John Lovett (defense) and both received high marks in the spring.

But Miami could be a very good football team and start 1-3 or even 0-4. Here are Miami’s first four games:

Sept. 7: at Florida State

Sept. 17: Georgia Tech

Sept. 26: at Virginia Tech

Oct. 3: Oklahoma

“When I first saw that schedule it really got my attention,” said offensive tackle Jason Fox. “But I see this as a great chance. We want to put Miami back on the map and this is our best opportunity to prove that we can do that. This is our year.”

Yates is finally healthy: North Carolina quarterback T.J. Yates, who played at Pope High School in Marietta, has 18 career starts for the Tar Heels. But rarely in his first two seasons has he been completely healthy. He missed six games last season with a sprained left ankle. He had shoulder surgery in 2007. He even injured his right (throwing) thumb playing a game of Ultimate Frisbee last April. That put him out of throwing for about six weeks.

But on Sunday Yates, who threw for 1,168 yards and 11 touchdowns in seven games last season, said: “This is the best I have felt in two years.”

Now Yates, who has completed 60 percent of his career passes, has to stay that way. If he does the Tar Heels are expected to challenge Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech in the ACC Coastal.

Anybody remember the UA-Clemson, UF-FSU, LSU-GT scores. Average margin of victory for the SEC in those games was like 30, right? And how about Vandy getting it’s first bowl win AD over mighty BC?

Not only does it pain me to agree with Im4Bama, being a LSU fan, but bama is going to destroy VA Tech, and the west has three strong teams who can make a run for The SEC and the BCS championship. LSU has destroyed all its ACC foes this decade Va Tech, Miami, Ga Tech with two of them held to only 1 field goal. Bring on North Carolina!!!!!!

ACC by the numbers
1. 6 and 6 vs SEC not 6 and 4 for 2008
2. 3 (50%) of those victores came against Vanderbilt and Miss. State
3. Vanderbilt beat BC in Bowl game
4. LSU (7 and 5) crushed Tech 38 to 3.
5. ACC 5 losses and 3 wins in bowl games

“Tradition means something, no matter how old; because it can be regained.”

As a Tech fan, I agree whole-heartedly. Tech is in a conference smattered with a few programs that have the old tradition aspect and most that just don’t. As much as I want VT to knock Bama on its face in the kickoff, I have no love for a school whose football program (or name for that matter) was all but unknown until the 80’s. Could say the same for a couple other schools in the ACC. I like the rags-to-riches stroies as much as the next guy, but schools that have “glory days” to tell tall tales about over a pint is yet another thing that college football is all about.

I’ll add to my last post that I’m also more a fan that likes the Southern traditions of our teams down here. GT’s fight song has the tune of Dixie hidden as a trumpet flourish, for example, and a lot of Southern football programs use things like that. It’s unique to this part of the country and our schools. But as a Tech fan I can never pass up the opportunity to say that GA and Auburn use the Union Battle Hymn. Does anyone know why?

M-love your “selected” use of the Sagarin Ratings to half way kinda try to make a point. Typical Techie…loves numbers but don’t know what they mean or how to use them. While you are correct in that there were 4 SEC teams ranked lower than Duke in the final Sagarin, you neglect to say that in addition to Florida, there were 4 “dwarfs” including none other than your cross-state nemesis UGA ranked higher than the #1 ACC team…Va Tech. Also, those world-beating, chest-bumping, hedge clipping Jackets of yours were…36? Guess squeezing by Gardner-Webb 10-7 at HOME will do that for you. Enjoy your year of Halley’s Comet like success…reality returns Thanksgiving weekend when UGA goes back to stomping a mudhole in your pansy yellow butts.

It is a great idea, and lets’ see how the Bama Va Tech turns out. That may be an epic classic. Then again, somebody wants to pay back, and I don’t think it is Va Tech. What was Bama’s last perfomance like.

As far as LSU and UNC. All hail, who knows who will be coaching those two teams. Mama may be calling to UM and he might answer this time. Davis may be like Mack Brown and be fed up with the Bball. We will see sound fun though.

As long as you keep the outrageous comments coming Tech fans, your schoool nor team, nor you bloggers are going to get respect. The best Tech higlights lately are Yellow Jacket Terrorist and the Parking Gargage highlights. Just pick it up a little.

ACC/SEC. The best results are those of the natural series, UGA vs GT; Clemson vs USC, FSU vs UF. I am sure that some statisticians will check out those records for the last 20 years.

Obviously LSU-UNC doesn’t carry the tradition as VA Tech vs Bama but to write UNC off is a mistake. Butch Davis is a good coach and he’s recruited well. They will be a force in the ACC soon and perhaps this season.

We had some nice discussion on here late last week and now we are back to the childish antics by some bloggers.

Saw that Dwyer is preseason acc player of the year. Wonder how important the gt’ers think that is – since the Dawgs caught so much grief about what polls said about them last preseason. Can he live up to the hype (although I’m sure it’s not seen as hype on North Ave.)?

How quickly GT fans what happened to them in the bowl game last year. Just so you recall, LSU (an SEC team) kicked the sh*t out of the Jackets. And congrats on beating UGA in a fluke game last year to run your record to 1-7 since 2001. That’s mighty impressive. And more congrats on the big win over SEC powerhouse Miss St. That must have made you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. But the highlight of the season must have been that 3pt beatdown of Gardner Webb.

If anyone thinks that the ACC holds a candle to the SEC they simply don’t know football. Better athletes + better coaches + better facilities + bigger (and full) stadiums + more tradition + better recruiting + bigger fan bases = Better Programs… Bottom line

LSU- UNC sounds like an awesome matchup.

But I think that either VT needs to win this year or UNC needs to win next year or at least avoid getting blown out in order to keep the acc-sec matchups going.

LSU has had a well documented history of blowing out acc opponents. Not just GT last year but they pounded VT 48-7 in 2007 and UGA also pounded perennial ACC champ VT in a bowl game in 06 I think it was.

Of the 6 SEC wins over the ACC last year all of them except for Vandy’s 2 point bowl win over ACC runner up BC were by blowout scores of 23, 24, 31, 34, and 35 point margins. The acc did eke out 3 close wins by 1,2, and 3 points, 2 medium wins by 12 and 14 pts, and one blowout win with GT beating perennial sec doormat MISS St by 35-3.

The SEC outscored the ACC by 119 points overall so although the games were tied 6-6 statistically it was domination by the SEC.

Bottom line: The ACC needs to step up and win either the VT-BAMA game or the LSU-UNC game or at least be competitive and lose a close game They can’t keep getting buttkickings in the premiere matchups between the 2 conferences. Nobody much cares about when GT beats MISS ST or Vandy. They want to see the ACC win against one of the sec big boys at least once in a blue moon.

Yawn, another glorified Chic-fil-a bowl. If they want to eventually be part of the BCS, they need to schedule BIG intersectional games. Instead of a snoozer like LSU steamrolling North Carolina, put in a call to USC WEST, and offer a match-up between the mighty Trojans and the upper crust of the SEC, Florida, LSU, or Alabama. Now you are talking football!!!

CKDawg65 “dumbass” you are so caught up in the SEC myth that you just make comments without really knowing the facts about our game with Gardner Webb last year, first of all Nesbitt our QB who thrashed your inferior defense last year in athens was on the sidlines and our backup QB Jaybo Shaw who lit up Miss St was contained by GW defense that was matched against a offensive line that had 3 starters out, but we still got the win, it kinda reminded me of the game uga won against South Florida a few years back when they intercepted a pass in the end zone to preserve a win, you hydrant humpers need to pay more attention before running that big mouth, looking sooooooooooooo forward to spanking that ass again in Atlanta, Paul Johnson is going to start a streak that only Bobby Dodd would be proud of :) 45-42 THWG

hedgeprunner,

Jaybo didn’t take one snap in the GW game last year. So I have no idea why you even mentioned his name in that game. Calvin Booker played that entire game and had a really bad game against that team. If it wasn’t for a blocked FG, we would have lost that game.

As far as the UGA Tech rivalry goes, Tech is still UGA’s red headed step child until a winning streak bigger than one win can happen.

Really looking forward to the game down in Atlanta this fall.

As far as most UGA fans yapping about the LSU game in the dome, it was quite simple: Jim Mora Sr said it best.

We couldn’t pass, couldn’t run the ball, we sucked, we sucked! We did diddly poo, and the quote goes on and on.

LSU had bigger, faster, stronger defenders that easily defended the option. As far as the ACC goes, we can’t compete on a national level yet, but the balance is nice, but the SEC is obliviously the top dog and I hope VT takes down the Tide, but than looses a game in the future of their schedule.

As far as UNC, Butch Davis will beat the hell out of Tech again and probably will upset Va Tech if the game is at UNC. We will see. “you would probably have noted that the sec is a top heavy conference with floriduh and the 11 dwarfs” Really? Really?

I love having the last 3 National Champs by Florida and one of the dwarfs, who also won it in ‘03. If the other SEC teams are all dwarfs, why do we have the best BCS record among all conferences (overall 12-5 record for.706 winning percentage including 5-0 title games) and national titles by 3 different schools LSU (2) Florida (2) and Tennesse? Wasn’t LSU the 1st (2 time BCS Champion while Florida became the second one?

Good point Tiger in AZ.

What about overall teams even making it to the BCS? What conference has put the most teams in to BCS games? I am pretty sure it is not the ACC. The SEC usually lands 2 teams in the BCS games with one in the Championship game. So basically one of the 11 Dwarfs is usually right behind whichever SEC team is playing for a National Title.

and just so we are clear, in college football, with no playoff system, every game counts from opening weekend to the BCS Championship as teams jockey for final standings.
