Mr. CFB will return July 6

Hi folks. In case you missed my announcement on Friday, Mr. College Football is taking his traditional break in June and will return on Monday, July 6. When I get back we will be only 16 days from SEC Media Days in Birmingham which will be followed by the ACC Kickoff in Greensboro, N.C. Wow!

Until then I have a homework assignment for you. Give me your order of finish, by division, in the ACC and SEC for 2009. If you want to state your case for the winners, be my guest. I’ll check back from time to time to read your predictions.

If something big happens while I’m away and I’m near a computer, I’ll try to come back for a day and play.

Thanks for all of your support. I’m looking forward to a great 2009 season.

Rx, are you taking some of your prescriptions??? J/k, LOL. That would be a nice ending to 2009, but I don’t think the Buckeyes will be there either. Watch out for Vanderbilt this year, they should be better than last year. Good call on the SEC West.

SEC West:
Ole Miss, they want it!
LSU, New QB is a big help
Bama, Rebuilding but look for them to win next season
Auburn, Not happening
Arkansas, down year
MS, duh

SEC East:
Florida, Duh
UGA, gives UF more trouble than expected and it comes down to the UF game for the division (UGA has 1 other SEC loss)
USCe, no SEC championship this season
UT, UF wins by 50
Vandy, will surprise some people
Kentucky, down year

SEC Champ: Ole Miss (no SEC team in the BCS title game), no I’m not an Ole Miss fan but preseason #1 is a curse (just ask UGA) and Ole Miss has their number. Both Ole Miss and UF play in a BCS Bowl. UF wins big. Ole Miss loses big.

ACC Coastal
GT, One ACC loss but wins the tiebreaker with VT
VT, only loses to GT in a close game and gets BCS at large bid
Miami, On its way back
UNC, has the same record as Miami but loses head to head
UVA, No bowl game
Duke, Duh

ACC Atlantic
FSU, 2 losses and a lot of close calls
NC State, 2 losses but loses head to head with FSU
Clemson, better but still not there
Wake, lost a lot of good players
BC, will probably go to the title game despite my placement
Maryland, terrible season

ACC Champ: GT

BCS Title game: USC vs Texas, USC wins

CFB & Mex, why is everyone so enamoured with Mississippi? I think they lost too much to be as good as last year. Snead is good, but he lost some talent around him (specifically on the lines). And I disagree with you CFB about LSU. I don’t think the new QB (Sheppard) won’t beat out Jefferson and will probably end up playing a Percy Harvey type roll for his career.

Wil-
I meant Jefferson as the new QB because he wasn’t the starter at the beginning of last season.

Its not that I think Mississippi is that great its that Bama is slightly rebuilding and LSU isn’t all the way back from last season’s disappointments. Why do I have them over Florida? Because while it is clear that Florida is the superior team the preseason #1 curse will make them trip up somewhere. Maybe UGA will get lucky and the trip up will be against them and they get to the SEC champ game (but its also pretty possible that even if UGA beats UF, UF will still go the the championship).

Mr. Barnhart, enjoy your time off. I do have one request. I have not seen or read anything recently, but are there going to be any new rule changes in college football this year? For example, game clock changes, penalty changes, and such. I imagine if they do happen they may be reported, but if you hear of anything please let us know when you return. Thanks, aaron

Greensboro? I mean, it’s a nice town and all, but Greensboro for the ACC media days?
SEC East finish:
Florida (duh)
South Carolina (oh, why not)
Georgia (Big shoes to fill on offense)
Kentucky
Vanderbilt
Tennessee (because Lane Kiffin is a genius. Good assistant staff. But Kiffin? In. Over. His. Head.)
SEC West:
LSU (men amongst boys)
Alabama (I don’t think Saban’s ever had decaf, you know?)
Ole Miss
Mississippi State
Arkansas (Petrino=evil incarnate)
Auburn (should be third, but not much faith in Chizik — for now)

ACC Coastal
Georgia Tech (PJ’s teams in year two always make the leap. And this team is loaded.)
UNC (Davis can coach, y’all, even if he lost his top 30 receivers from a year ago)
Va. Tech (why so little faith? well, they’re good for an underwhelming performance or two)
Miami (have to better without Nix calling plays)
Duke (Cutcliffe can make them competitive, but this division won’t make it easy)
Virginia (the cupboard is bare)

ACC Atlantic
Florida State (More athletes than anyone else in the league)
Wake Forest (Better athletes than anyone realizes)
Clemson
Maryland
BC (lost another QB today!)
N.C. State

Tony, hopefully by the time you get back, no more of our players will have gotten into trouble. I’m extremely disappionted in Janoris Jenkins and I hope it’s an attention getter that our other players will take heed of. I really believe, that even though there will be challenges, that the only team that can really match straight up and beat the Gators are the Gators. Obviously, we are in a very tough conference to go undefeated but I think we have an opportunity IF 1) we can stay away from catastrophic injuries 2) maintain the hunger and focus to win another one, and 3) Stay away from bad behavior. While I’m hopeful of #1 and confident of #2, the very early returns on #3 are not good!

ACC-Atlantic
1. NCSt: Just look at 2008 game stats. When QB Wilson is healthy, NCSt is almost unbeatable.
2. Clemson: 2008 O-Line problems, whiner QB Harper, and loser HC Bowden are gone; much better overall team in 2009. Possible ACC-Atlantic winner. Seriously.
3. MD: Continued improvement from 2008
4. FSU: Lots of “program” problems and possible NCAA sanctions will derail team performance. LOTS of veteran talent gone from 2008 team.
5. Wake: Constant over-achiever, but lost lots of Def talent
6. BC: Almost all 2007-2008 talent is gone including HC. Cupboard is empty; a rebulding year.

ACC-Coastal
1. GT: Most loaded team in ACC. Offensive Juggernaut will average 35+ per game; 2008’s biggest weakness(passing def) will be fixed, and GT will have best Pass Def in ACC. Finally wins in Charlottesville & Tallahassee. Destroys GA in Atlanta in a laugher: 56-18.
2. UNC: Only QB injuries kept them from winning Coastal in 2008.
3. VT: Lots of young talent back from 2008, but not enough to repeat.
4. Miami: Better than 2008, but not much
5. Duke: Cutcliff is Offensive Genius despite limited talent available.
6. UVA: Many 2008 players gone

GT vs NCSt in ACC-CG. GT ACC Champ, 12-0, and likley BCS Sugar Bowl or Fiesta Bowl Bid.

I have decided that I can’t make even semi-credible preseason SEC and ACC predictions . . . .

Beyond Florida and UGA as relatively safe bets to finish first and second in the SEC East, and for Mississippi State to finish dead last in the SEC West, the other teams could finish anywhere in between 3rd and 6th in the East, and 1st and 5th in the West. It’s going to be a VERY interesting SEC season to watch as it unfolds.

BIG SEC Question: Can Florida finish undefeated and return to the BCS title game? Finishing undefeated in the SEC is always a matter of some luck . . . .

The ACC is even more evenly matched and possibly chaotic in its outcomes than the SEC. Based on last year’s ACC final standings, no team is “out of it” before the season starts, not even Duke or UVa. With a little luck, and unforeseen injuries to opposing teams, any team in the ACC could wind up 6-2 or 5-3 and in a two or three-way tie within their division. The ACC is also going to be a lot of fun to watch, and I expect great coaching to be the difference in final conference championship outcome.

BIG ACC Questions: Have FSU and Miami turned the corner, or will coaching changes be required before either has another 10-win season?

The better question is this:

Which conference, SEC or ACC, will have more DUIs, arrests, convictions, plea bargains, team suspensions, girlfriend beatdowns, NCAA sanctions, etc.?

Probably the SEC…AS USUAL.

But, which team in each conference will have the most?

Probably GA…AS USUAL, but Gators are certainly making that a close contest.

2009 Predictions
1. FSU & Miami will continue to struggle.
2. Winner of NCSt vs CU game will be ACC-A champ.
3. NCSt will be THE surprise team in ACC.
4. BC will disappoint with 6-6 season.
5. Duke will go 7-5.
6. UVA will continue to confound.
7. VT will beat Bama in a close one at the Dome.
8. GT will go 12-0.
7. NCSt QB Wilson will be ACC Player of the Year
8. GT will lead nation in Defensive INTs, Offensive Yards & Points per game.
9. At least one UVA QB will again be kicked off the team.

SEC East
1 – Florida – Tebow + NFL defense + sick special teams = repeat
2 – UGA – improved OL and D, flying under the radar but tough schedule
3 – Vandy – if they’re ever going to be a factor this is the year
4 – SC – more of the same, good but far from great
5 – UT – Kiffin takes his lumps, bubble bowl team
6 – UK – but their basketball team has final 4 potential, that’s all that matters

SEC West
1 – Bama – only real question is OL, defense is nasty, need some weapons to emerge besides Julio
2 – LSU – talent galore, big question at QB, honestly I’m not sold on Les Miles. just my opinion
3 – Ole Miss – might be a tad overrated, but will have a decent season
4 – Arkansas – Petrino is a douche but he’s a good coach
5 – Auburn – this program, along with UT, is looking more and more like a train wreck
6 – Miss St – poor Mullen

Won’t bother with the JV conference. It’s a crapshoot anyway. How bout them Dookies baby?!!!

1.)UGA- great defense and good offense but excellent leadership to lead the dogs.
T 2.)USC, UF- in a shocker, Spurrier beats Meyer at seasons end to vault UGA into the SEC Champ game. Then Meyer bolts to Notre Dame.
4.)Vandy-gives UGA and UF a scare but that’s about it.
5.) Kentucky- has basketball started yet?
6.)UT-Top 10 recruiting class won’t help this year. Everyone will be fired up for Kiffin.

1.)Alabama-easy SEC schedule will be difference.
2.)LSU-brutal SEC schedule will be difference.
3.)Ole Miss-Nutt does not do well when he is expected to.
4.)Auburn-better but not yet ready for big-time.
5.)MSU-much better and will upset one or two of the heavyweights.
6.)Arkansas-Petrino finds out that this conference is tougher than the Big East.
