SEC Commish to coaches: Knock it off

Destin, Fla.—Mike Slive is, by his own admission, “a recovering attorney.” He is also a former district court judge. So he’s no stranger to being in a room full of powerful people who don’t necessarily love each other.

The SEC Commissioner will draw upon that experience today as the league’s 2009 Spring Meetings begin here on the Florida panhandle. Slive will meet with the SEC’s football coaches as he always does. His language will be measured. He will be calm, but firm. He will remind them of the SEC’s basic rules of sportsmanship to which every coach in the league in every sport is expected to adhere.

But the message, while dressed up befitting a man of Slive’s stature, will be very simple and very blunt:

Knock it off.

Knock off public pronouncements that other coaches are breaking the rules. Tennessee’s Lane Kiffin said that about Florida’s Urban Meyer in February. Kiffin was wrong and was reprimanded by the SEC.

Knock off shots about somebody else’s recruiting techniques. Meyer was quoted as wondering if the NCAA would look into Auburn’s use of limos in recruiting. Meyer made the comment when he was led to believe recruits were riding in the limos. That was wrong, but Meyer was wrong to comment on it. He also made reference to coaches tearing off their shirts (Tennessee) in the recruiting process.

Even Dan Mullen, the mild-mannered new head coach at Mississippi State, got in a shot at Auburn’s limos, suggesting the money at his place went to stuff for the players and not fancy cars for the coaches.

Knock off the talk of rumors that another coach might be moving on. South Carolina’s Steve Spurrier told Paul Finebaum that he had heard the Meyer to Notre Dame rumors like everybody else. Ten years ago that was probably a harmless remark. Not now.

Here’s the issue, and it’s a simple one: The price of playing poker in this league has really gone up in this decade.  The SEC has won three straight national championships. The SEC has four coaches (Meyer, Nick Saban, Les Miles, Steve Spurrier) who have won national titles. Three of those, Miles ($3.751 million), Saban ($3.75 million), and Meyer ($3.5 million) are among the highest paid coaches in the sport. Into that high-energy, high-ego mix add Kiffin, the young Tennessee coach who was hired to bring the swagger back to the Vols and Auburn’s Gene Chizik, who is literally trying to stem the Tide of the powerhouse Saban is building in Tuscaloosa.

Now to be fair, it should be noted that the vast majority of the coaches in this league have not said a negative word this offseason. If you’re Mark Richt, Saban, Miles, Bobby Johnson, etc., will you be amused when Slive begins his talk? Or will you be mad because you’re having to sit through it?

Bottom line: From the commissioner’s perspective, there is too much at stake for too many people to have coaches back biting each other in public. Did we mention that the SEC is about to begin unprecedented TV contracts with CBS and ESPN that will pump a little less than $3 billion into the league over the next 15 years? No pressure there.

Yes, the fans and the media are immensely entertained by it all. The commissioner is not. The commissioner wins.

Saban will not treat UT any different this year than he usually does. He doesn’t want his players to get caught up in the off the field drama as he wants them to be focused. Sometimes being too fired up can backfire on you. Nick knows that which is why he won’t get dragged into any controversy with the Kiffin. He’s gonna do what he can to let the final score speak for itself.

Know how to spell class?……MARK RICHT….when all things are said and done, Meyer will leave Florida high and dry…Saban coached teams will continue to disappoint and he will leave due to heat from the fans and Kiffen will be gone in three years because of his immature ways. Mark Richt will win out because he does not let his ego get in the way like the other coaches do.
Mark Richt has one bad year (10-3) and all of the football know- it- alls come out of the woodwork and point fingers….Bama was one loss away from the same record last year and their fans act like they were the best team in the country..Utah showed they weren’t even close…..Tennessee fans talk smack not knowing what kind a team they have this year…that’s dangerous…because they are setting themselves up for a huge let down. The only fans that can legitimately talk smack right now are the Florida fans…..but beware… when you lose…and you will…everyone is going to beat you down with everything they’ve got.
I can’t wait for the season to start….let the whining and finger pointing begin!

good comments, all. i can’t fault kiffie…he is just trying to fire up the fan base. all those years with the great pumpkin have put the ut fans to sleep….they need waking up – and it seems that he is doing that part of the job. now, as for coaching…we’ll know about that come january. i hope he can back up his words….or else, daddy kiffin may become the interim head coach pretty soon.

This just in: Bobby Johnson at Vanderbilt wishes another coach, any coach would say something about him or Vanderbilt—anything, please! They need some attention.

Fear the pinkie Aubie…I plan to hold up four fingers coming out of Sanford Stadium this November after another beat down of the Tiggers. All that success in the rivalry games during Tubs tenure and all you have to show for it is one SEC Championship. Then again when you only have 6 Conference Championships in your history we shouldn’t expect much.

Iceman,

You forgot to mention that the Iowa State job was Chizik’s first head coaching job. So, his head coaching record is 5-19 which includes the current 10-game losing streak.

HC’s of the SEC remind me of a Chicago divided in the Roarin’ 20’s. Slive is trying to bring the verbal warring godfathers in line. Fine and dandy. As bloggers, we enter this blogging sandbox accepting and appreciating the ol’ First Amendment. Some of us abide with civility, some of us don’t. So goes the wide world of HC’s coast to coast. I agree with Slive. He may not be able to cut a scholarship or two, nor deny a bowl to those who choose to wage war with a mouth wired open but he can make life difficult. A joint class study on Caveat and Proper Etiquette won’t hurt none of ‘em…To Kiffin : Heed the man and shut up.

Answer me this Slive, WHAT THE HELL ARE WE SUPPOSED TO DO IN THE OFFSEASON???? WATCH THE NBA??????

Sh!t talking makes the games more fun; also waterboarding Lane Kiffin, that is fun. Trying to make Saban smile, that is fun(and impossible). Making Richt cuss and knock out a stranger just because, getting Meyer to eat because he looks like a refugee and whines like a b!tch, Les…well he is just a douche.

WTF is wrong with you people? The comment by a Barner about Richt being a sub .500 coach is absurd. I guess you had way too much Natty Light on Martin this weekend. Seriously, beat the dogs once and we’ll talk. BTW, I love my Auburn trips. 2004 called and they want their victory back!

I love you UGA guys. No, really, I do. I’ve lived in Georgia forever and a day, and the state still never ceases to surprise me with new and wondrous things. Today’s factoid: there is actually a town in South Georgia called “Homerville.” No, really, I’m not making this up. It’s the county seat of Clinch County, located halfway between Valdosta and Waycross.

I’m willing to bet there are some HARDCORE Dawg fans who live in Homerville.

Too much money and too much power makes anyone’s ego too big. Pappa Bowden said it best, there are only two kinds of Coaches, Coaches that are dead, and coaches that have been fired. One 5-7 year guys, and you are gone. The boosters will not care how many MNCs you have won.

Alta~Dawg—-And there’s much to amuse BOTH Georgias, my friend. It’s a damn big state, and almost no one can know it all firsthand. They call it the Empire State of the South for a reason. I’m just happy you natives let me live here.

BTW, I do get outside the Perimeter quite a bit. Been to Cedartown, Statham, Tallapoosa, Zebulon and Roberta since the last two months, but my work rarely takes me to South Georgia.

Hunker Down—-I’ve been to Yeehaw Junction. It’s not a town; it’s a crossroads with a dilapidated gas station and a very nasty greasy spoon (really bad chili). Homerville is apparently a real town, with a courthouse and everything!

Isn’t it funny that 6 months ago, NOBODY was talking about UT at all. Now, 75% of the comments on here are all about them. With all the turmoil, they are being talked about more than anyone else in the SEC, managed a top 10 class, and are gonna have a very good D this year. If they come up with a little offense or special team scores, they may surprise some people. If they land a good QB, watch out in 2010.

ALT Dawg,

We had a big party on 5-19(Gene Chizik day) to commemorate the hiring of Chizik. Kinda odd that all the party goers were Bama fans. I’m also surprised the dawg fans didn’t likewise have a party to celebrate the accomplishments of Coach Chizik. The guy may have ended the his last season at Iowa St. on a 10 game losing streak but people forget that he started the season off with a bang and put a whooping on both Kent State and North Dakota State.
