SEC East: Can Georgia find a big-time RB, regain its edge on defense?

Can Florida handle the hype and the expectations that come from being the defending national champions AND preseason No. 1? Can Georgia regain its edge on defense and enjoy life after Stafford and Moreno? Tennessee has a new attitude, but does that translate into more wins under first-year coach Lane Kiffin? Is Kentucky headed to a fourth straight bowl for the first time in school history? Can Stephen Garcia finally give South Carolina’s Steve Spurrier a real threat at quarterback? In 2008 Vanderbilt went to a bowl game in a rebuilding year. Can the Commodores go to two straight bowls for the first time in school history?

Those are just a few things we still don’t know about the SEC East as we head into the summer. Here is a breakdown of each team. The SEC West comes on Thursday.

SEC EAST

FLORIDA

Last season: 13-1, 7-1 SEC; beat Alabama 31-21 in SEC championship; beat Oklahoma 24-14 in BCS championship game.

Starters returning:  Offense 7, defense 11, kickers 2.

Coach: Urban Meyer, 83-17 overall, 44-9 in four seasons at Florida.

What we still don’t know: Who is going to back up Aaron Hernandez? Hernandez is probably the best tight end in the country but Florida is going to have some power-I sets this season and at times may use two tight ends. Freshman Desmond Parks, an early enrollee, suffered a leg injury during the spring which could keep him out of action this season. Can the Florida defense, which returns 11 starters, get even better? DC Charlie Strong says yes and the Gators can prove it by being more of a dominating unit. “We have talked to our guys about being more aggressive and working to get the opposing offense off the field as fast as possible,” Strong said. Are Frankie Hammond, Jr., and Deonte Thompson going to be the big-play wide receivers? Florida has a lot of guys who can run but a lot of emphasis this spring was put on getting separation from the defensive back in man-to-man coverage. The big question at Florida is not talent, which the Gators have plenty of. The question is whether or not the Gators can handle the expectations that come with being the defending national champions and preseason No. 1.

First game:   Sept. 5 vs. Charleston Southern.

GEORGIA

Last season:  10-3, 6-2 SEC; beat Michigan State 24-12 in Capital One Bowl.

Starters returning:  Offense 7, defense 6, kicker 1.

Coach: Mark Richt, 82-22 in eight seasons at Georgia.

What we still don’t know: Is somebody going to step up at tailback? With a veteran offensive line and a new quarterback in Joe Cox, Georgia will certainly need to establish the running game. The only question is whether or not there will be a featured back or if the job will be handled by committee.  The Georgia coaches have been waiting on sophomore Caleb King to step up and show why he was one of the most highly-recruited players in the nation two years ago. King is good but he’s yet to prove that he should get 20-25 carries a game. Richard Samuel (wrist) did not take part in spring practice. Redshirt freshmen Carlton Thomas and Dontavius Jackson have some ability. It remains to be seen if incoming freshman Washaun Ealy will be a factor. How big a setback is Justin Houston’s suspension? Houston emerged as the best defensive end candidate in the spring but will miss the first two games for violating team rules. Georgia was counting on Houston to step up and help get this defense turned around. Who’s going to help A.J. Green? If somebody doesn’t step up Green won’t see single coverage all season. Michael Moore and Tavarres King will get a chance or it could be a true freshman like Marlon Brown or Rontavious Wooten.

First game:   Sept. 5 at Oklahoma State.

KENTUCKY

Last season:  7-6, 2-6 SEC; beat East Carolina 25-19 in Liberty Bowl.

Starters returning:  Offense 7, defense 5, kicker 1.

Coach: Rich Brooks, 123-150-1 overall, 32-41 in six seasons at Kentucky.

What we still don’t know: Can Mike Hartline get it done consistently at quarterback? Hartline, a junior, is coming off one of his best performances when he was named the most outstanding offensive player in the win over East Carolina in the Liberty Bowl. He is the No. 1 quarterback coming out of spring practice but Brooks said he will take a long look at incoming freshman Morgan Newton of Carmel, Ind. Newton (6-4, 220) had 1,938 yards passing and 1,664 yards rushing last season and led his high school to three state championship games. Brooks said he would use sophomore WR Randall Cobb in the “Wildcat” formation to take advantage of his athleticism. Can Kentucky rebuild a defense that returns only five starters? Yes, because CB Trevard Lindley, DE Jeremy Jarmon, and MLB Micah Johnson all decided to come back instead of turning pro. “Those three guys took what would have been a difficult transition and made it a lot easier because they decided to come back,” Brooks said. “Defensively we will be an improved team.” Last season Kentucky was 11th  in the SEC in total defense (332.4 ypg) and eighth in scoring defense (21.5 ppg)

First game:   Sept. 5 vs. Miami (Ohio) in Cincinnati.

SOUTH CAROLINA

Last season: 7-6, 4-4 SEC; lost to Iowa 31-10 in Outback Bowl.

Starters returning: Offense 5, defense 6, kicker 1.

Coach: Steve Spurrier, 170-62-2 overall, 28-22 in four seasons at South Carolina.

What we still don’t know: Can Stephen Garcia hold it together this summer? For the first time  since coming to campus in January of 2007, the sophomore quarterback from Tampa made it through a spring practice and will be (hopefully) working with his receivers this summer. Spurrier believes that Garcia has the physical tools to play quarterback at this level. If Garcia will focus on football this summer, Spurrier might finally have the consistent quarterback he has lacked in four seasons as South Carolina’s head coach. Will the offensive line finally jell and become a respectable unit? Spurrier has not had an SEC-caliber offensive line since he got to Columbia. This group is still a work in progress under new OL coach Eric Wolford. The offensive line has to play better or Garcia will be running for his life all season. Who is the big-play WR now that Kenny McKinley is gone? Looks like it will be Moe Brown, who was named the offensive player of the spring. How good is Stephon Gilmore? Very. He enrolled in January and won a starting position at cornerback in the spring. Spurrier is also thinking about using him at quarterback in the shotgun formation.

First game: Sept. 3 at N.C. State.

TENNESSEE

Last season: 5-7, 3-5 SEC.

Starters returning: Offense 7, defense 5, kicker 1.

Coach: Lane Kiffin, first year as college head coach.

What we still don’t know: Can QB Jonathan Crompton get Tennessee through an entire season? Crompton, a senior who threw for 889 yards in eight games last season, emerged as No. 1 after the spring game. B.J. Coleman, the guy some people thought was a little more talented, has transferred to Chattanooga. That leaves junior Nick Stephens as the only other experienced quarterback on campus. How big an impact will the freshmen have at running back? Montario Hardesty looks like the starting tailback but Tennessee fans can’t wait to see true freshmen Bryce Brown and David Oku, two highly recruited players. Who will play the other safety opposite Eric Berry? Berry, who needs just 14 yards in interception returns to become the NCAA’s all time leader, lost his running mate in Demetrice Morley, who was kicked off the team. His replacement could be Dennis Rogan, who started 10 games at cornerback and two at free safety last season.

First game:   Sept. 5 vs. Western Kentucky.

VANDERBILT

Last season: 7-6, 4-4 SEC; beat Boston College 16-14 in Music City Bowl.

Starters returning: Offense 9, defense 9, kicker 1.

Coach: Bobby Johnson, 87-92 overall, 27-56 in seven years at Vanderbilt.

What we still don’t know: Could Vanderbilt go to its second straight bowl game? It sure looks like it. The Commodores return 18 starters from Vanderbilt’s first bowl team since 1982. “We didn’t have to pull guys out of the locker room at spring practice because they are thinking we can do this again,” coach Bobby Johnson said. “We’ve got some momentum and we hope to build on it.” Who is going to start at quarterback? Vanderbilt has two quality quarterbacks in senior Mackenzie Adams, the returning starter, and rising sophomore Larry Smith, who led Vanderbilt to its first bowl victory since 1955. Johnson did not name a 2009 starter after spring practice. Who replaces the versatile D.J. Moore? Moore was a very successful two-way player for the Commodores last season and that role will probably be filled by sophomore Jamie Graham. Graham had 17 catches as a wide receiver last season but was moved to cornerback in the spring and will probably see action on both sides of the ball. Myron Lewis, who played opposite Moore last season at cornerback, could also see some snaps on offense.

First game:   Sept. 5 vs. Western Carolina.

Dawgs are the best team in the country again this year. That makeshift line last year allowed Moreno to have a great year, and the protected Stufford real well. Just think how good they’ll be this year. AND I WAS FIRST!!!!!

I’m very worried about the 3rd string waterboy. If we don’t develop some depth there an injury could cause us to become tired in the 4th quarter. We may then possibly become dehydrated across our 3rd string line and could give up a few yards.

Let’s get it started early and out of the way so we can talk UGA football.

1. We all work at burger places.
2. our degrees from UGA are worthless.
3. only a TECH grad can make over 100K
4. we all live in trailers.
5. mark richt has never won the big one
6. Grant field is the place and Sanford stadium is the pits.
7. No UGA fans ever stepped in a class room.
8. The SEC is over rated, even with the last 3 of 4 national champs from conf.
9. we will never beat tech again as long as Johnson is there.
10. Florida owns ya’ll
11. our players are angels and never get in trouble.
12. we’ll take our 2& 3 star players, you can have your 4 and 5 star.
13. Rather be dead than a Dawg fan.
14. All of the 7 game win streak was chan’s fault, nothing ya’ll did.
15. I know I missed some, Tech fans please feel free to add. I thought this would save ya’ll some time.

Tech fan here. I don’t see Georgia getting past Florida to get to the SEC championship game, but I give the Dogs props for opening with a real team this year, travelling to Okla State…Florida opening w/ Charleston Southern? Give me a break. And yes, I know my Jackets are opening w/ Jax State…I’m not crazy about that game, either.

Wow Tony, by some strange Cosmic circumstance you may have just placed the East in the exact order of actual finish with your listings! I’m sure that some would place Tennessee ahead of Kentucky and maybe South Carolina but I just have a feeling that it’s gonna be a tough year for the Vols. I thought Kiffin might try to rotate Crompton and B J Coleman a little this year to take the pressure off the QB position and mask the deficiency there but Coleman has left the building…But who knows, maybe Crompton turns into Peyton Manning this year. I sure hope so, because Peyton was the one Manning who could NEVER beat Florida…Georgia is a real wildcard to me, in some ways I see them being better and in some ways worse but honestly it could be 10-2 or it could be 7-5…probably somewhere in the middle. I think with the little summer program that Meyer has in place with strength coach M&M running the show…there will be no complacency going on in Gainesville…Mighty Gators…Beast of the East.

JB, you need to concentrate on solving your acne and try to determine if you’re a guy or a girl. Leave the football discussions for the men. You little techies always spew the same bile….you should’ve gone to UGA, like you wished you could have, and then you wouldn’t have all of these psychological issues confronting you every day.

Washaun better be the answer because I haven’t seen anything on UGA’s roster close to what we need at running back. I have a feeling that the passing game will have to open holes for the running game. AJ will get his help, but it’s most likely to come from a couple of the new kids coming in this year.

We had better find a couple of really good defensive ends to rush the passer and stop the toss sweep, or our defense will be chasing everyone sideline to sideline….no one will be running up the middle.

Oh, JB, are you still here….you may now go to your computer techician job….try to pick out a shirt without drool or food stains on it.

Predicted final 2009 SEC East Division standings—-

(1) Florida (8-0);
(2) Georgia (5-3);
(3) South Carolina (4-4);
() Tennessee (3-5);
() Vanderbilt (3-5);
() Kentucky (2-6).

For the Gators, it’s all about focus vs. believing their own press clippings; as an optimistic fan, I choose to hope that they will get a little bit lucky (again). For the Dawgs, it’s a rebuilding year; new quarterback and “featured” tailback will emerge, but it’s not enough to break through, and the UGA defense will continue to have untimely break-downs at critical points. The Evil Genius and South Carolina will finally find a quarterback, but it’s not enough to win more than 8 or 9 games overall (4 or 5 SEC). Tennessee has young talent, but no senior leadership and no established quarterback. Vanderbilt may out-perform expectations; I would love to see it happen, but I refuse to put any money on it. Kentucky’s season will be a test of Brooks’ coaching skills; the Wildcats are not going to overwhelm anyone in the SEC, but they could pull some unexpected wins.

8:40 am

Lifelong dawg fan here, and JB is right. Hopefully this will remain a football discussion about the Dawgs and SEC and not a pissing contest about academia, and superiority of other schools. From a balling standpoint, UGA has several issues, the chief one being the defense or lack therof. It is not a stretch to say that last year was an aberration when comparing to other defenses under CMR, so hopefully we can show more energy and make less dumb penalties on defense. I think with our OL that the running game and J. Cox will be decent to score points in most games, however, a couple of teams with powerful offenses (ok State, Fla) scare me because of their ability to put up points. I also think that getting our best Offensive lineman back (Stourdivant) and defensive lineman (J Owens) back will help more than the doubters will admit.

Florida is head and shoulders above UGA and the rest of the East on paper, and should win the SEC. Hopefully we can get back to competing in every game this year and show up in the first quarter ready to play in every game. I think 9-3 would be a good year if we compete reasonably in all games.

My poor beloved dawgs….I hate to admit, but I don’t think UF is beatable! Handle the hype? It’s not like it is something new for them like it was us last year! I believe many people had them preseason #1 last year, as well! Plus, Tim Tebow is the kind of leader I wish we had! After last year, he won’t let them lose this year!

However, I think UGA is realistically the only team on their schedule that COULD beat them (given our week off) but we are going to have to find a pass rusher! Hopefully Jeff Owens will be the spark we needed to at least crush the pocket and give someone a chance to get to the passer!

I will also commend UF on putting together the biggest sh*t schedule on planet earth! If they played Bama or Ole Miss from the west instead of Arkansas or Miss St (not sure who that is…I think they are SEC) then maybe I would understand, but they literally play NOBODY! What a bunch of girls!

Florida’s schedule is a joke but they could lose one game either to LSU or GA. It is hard when you have the bullseye on you. GA will lose 2 maybe 3 games depending upon how the first two games go. SC hasn’t had a good offense with Holtz or Spurrier and this year won’t be any different. They have to beat UGA early to have a chance at a good season.

Georgia is loaded on defense so it will be upt to their coach to get it out of them, injuries decimated them last year.

Branden Smith will make an impact as will the kicker putting the ball into the end zone.

9:10 am

1. Florida: Preseason #1; Legitimate SEC and National Title Contender; Not infallible; Could lose 2-3 games if complacent or Meyer tries to get cute; Will win the East regardless.

2. Georgia: Good but far from great. May be able to knock off Florida after the off week but won’t be consistent enough over the long haul to win the East. Will at least make that game more interesting than last year. Pounding Tech 10 feet in to the turf will make the season. A return trip to the Capital One bowl would be quite a feat.

3. South Carolina: Total Crap and irrelevant.

4. Vanderbilt: I think they go to another bowl.

5. Tennessee: Total crap and irrelevant. The offense will be an absolute horrific train wreck of epic proportions.

6. Kentucky: Total Crap and irrelevant. I just don’t have the same soft spot in my heart for Kentucky like I do for Vandy. I really don’t like these clowns for some odd reason.

That about sums it up. The SEC East will be pretty boring this year and isn’t that great. Thanks.

It has been written, ‘The bigger they are, the harder they fall.’ It will be hard to rope the Gator, especially if Tebow et al continue to live by the motto of ‘no one will practice, practice and play harder than we’uns.’ Okay, that wasn’t quite the quote but that was the attitude. What will August bring..? What will transpire over the summer..? Who will be doing community service and why..? And who will be the first from the SEC to suffer a loss to CLK and the Vols..? Fla has tickets already on sale for the SECCG. They will play Bama, this time Bama gets the job done. Percy claimed glaucoma for his failed drug test, that is why he left UF early. Fla is a top heavy fave although the Dawgs seem to play better with low expectations. They could surprise and finish 7-1. Also, I think Kent will take a step back this year although Tenn is relevant again. Both off the field (right away) and on the field (in a year or so)

The issue with UGA is never about talent but about discipline. Until Richt stops applying NCAA minimums to criminal behavior and gets control of the program, arrests will continue as will penalties at critical points during games. The beatings by Alabama and Florida and the humiliation by Tech should reduce the sense of entitlement somewhat.

I’m usually very positive but there isn’t a whole lot to be excited about as a UGA fan, for me. Noone stepping up at RB, a QB who knows the system but has VERY little game experience, 1 WR, and a D with more holes in it than Jeff Francouer’s swing. Florida is truely a great team and deserves all of the hype based on last year, unlike our Dawgs last year when we beat a second tier Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl. With that being said, I still do not put Florida in the unbeatable category. It is worth noting that the last four National Champs from the SEC this decade have all had at least one loss in the conference. However, if any team can run the table like Auburn in 2004 it is this UF team. Unlike Auburn, UF’s easy OOC schedule will not penalize them if they win all their games since they will start ranked #1.

Oh yea, back to football…. only Florida will beat Florida this year. Too much talent, too much speed, too much mental toughness, too many returning starters, too much Tebow……keep your eye on the Florida/LSU game.

UGA may have a painful flirtation with the 2006 season. Sorry guys, I see you struggling in a mighty way with the O. The TE position has always figured heavily as a Mark Richt calling card (Ben Watson & Leonard Pope spring to mind – They were on the field making a HUGE difference, not on the sidelines paying penance half the season). Who steps up as TE this year? I do expect the D to have a bit more fire in the belly, but you have to step up the pressure on the QB………..and as usual, Florida waits for you……

Hate Meyer, but he has that team ready to play and Tebow is a hell of a leader, coach on the field. Their Defense will be unreal this year…..Dawgs have lots of questions
( heart, leadership, schemes, tackling. some assit. coach’s ) We all want our teams to do well, but i need to see some changes first. somebody did a graph on our D since Willie took over, and there is a definite trend, and it’s not good.

It’s funny how Clemson and Georgia fans are just a like. The two most dillusional fan bases in the country. Neither have won anything in 30 years and they both think they are national powers every year. Neither are anywhere close to being in the same league as USC, Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, LSU, or Ohio State. Wake up and get with reality, Georgia is a mediocre SEC team, that like South Carolina has plenty of NFL talent just can’t do anything with it.

Brandon- funny how UGA is no where near the level of those other teams. Last year was a down year with 10 wins and we still beat LSU who is on your list, and also we beat LSU the two prior times with none of the games really close. Last year we were nowhere close to top teams, the year before we finished #2 or #3 and beat Florida, but this does not really count I guess. The only hole in our resume is NC’s like these other teams and that is a fact. However, In most years in CMR era we could beat any of these teams on a given day.

That Florida schedule is an absolute pathetic joke. Charleston Southern, well let’s just say Eric said it best. They try to rationalize their weak OOC scheduling with the fact that they have to play big, bad scary FSU from the ACC every year. Gimme a freaking break. FSU was good in the 90’s, but they are a far cry from what they used to be.

I’m not sure how good UT will be this year, but you can rest assured their defense will be light years better. Monte Kiffin has produced quality D’s wherever he’s gone so I expect UT to be no exception.

The 2 big questions to me regarding the SEC East are:
1) Can Joe Cox hold off Aaron Murray as the starter? Wouldn’t surprise me to see Murray take over mid-season kind of like Stafford did from Tereshinski.
2) Will this be the year that Spurrier’s offense takes off? Everyone seems to have written off the Ole Ball Coach, but he didn’t all of a sudden forget how to coach offenses. If Garcia can run his system efficiently, the Evil Genius may just have enough talent there to at least make some noise.

I predict the Dawgs will be solid on D especially with so much emphasis and critique during the off season. O line will be fine and JC will show folks what he has learned waiting for his time. One of the young guys at WR will step up and I’m not worried about the backfield. One of those 4 or 5 guys will emerge solidly. Dawgs have the bye week and may surprise the Gators. I like this Dawg team more so than I liked last years team. The key word being TEAM. 08 squad never showed me the team concept. I believe 09 will be different. May not have a better record but it will be a better team. I don’t think you will see them lose the way they did in 08. They will be more competitive, especially on defense. No 49 -10 losses or 31 – 0 at the half. Games will be much closer. UF should win the East but they could easily lose a game. UGA, SC or UT could be runner up. In the West, watch out for Ole Miss. Bama has questions at QB and O-line. LSU may be the class of the bunch but Houston Nutt does over achieve. As a Dawg fan I look forward to playing GT, time for pay back. It will be a great game and it would be nice to see both of them in the top 10 every year when they play.

not sure where “m” got his opinion of uga preseason last year. On paper, nobody should have touched uga last year except the vicious schedule they had. I suppose that is why uga fans were so disappointed last year. I truly believe it was a lack of discipline. My guess is that cmr has made adjustments to that issue. I imagine he learned a lesson or two from his Tech counterpart.

Judging from the spring game I saw on uga…I doubt expectations are quite as high as last year. It could be ugly for the dawgs. :-)

dawgbone, what’s with the hatin’ on the Gators schedule? It won’t be long until uga has the same scheule. I am pretty sure that the part of the schedule you pointed out (SEC) is predeterminedyears in advance.

Kudo’s to the dawgs for scheduling OkSU this year. I don’t think they had any idea that they would be getting as stout of an opponent as they will likely be getting. They would have faired better against this schedule last year.

My prediction…dawgs lose 4 or more this year. LSU, UF, GT + one more along the way. If they start 0-2…they lose 5 and get to play in one of Tech’s recent past bowl locals.

UGA plays 3 team in 09 that had winning conference records and only 1 of those teams is in the SEC. Florida was 7-1, Ok State was 5-3, and GT was 5-3. Sounds like even a bad UGA team should win8 or 9 games by just showing-up.I don’t care what the talking head say UGA has better talent than most teams on their schedule every year and has built in an eazy 7 wins every year. This year it should be USC(they play you close every year blah blah), Ark, ASU, UT, Vandy, Tenn Tech, UK, Auburn (a toss because they beat you in your house and you beat them in theirs). Ok State on the road, Florida well on the road so to speak, & Tech on trhe road are the hardest games you don’t play in Athens. If you can find a QB UGA should win 8 eazy and 1 or 2 maybe upsets so, 9-10 & 3-2, but no SEC Champion or even the SEC East rep. in the game.

LSU was lucky to get the chance at the 07 NC, with all the talent he had that year, Arkansas should not have beaten LSU. Last year was not a fluke and it wasn’t all QB problems(though it was part of it) Offensive plays and situations the O staff put the QB in was horrendous!!!!!! They should have been running it 80% of the time. This year will be a little better, but I still think A LOT of kinks need to be worked out. Chavis will improve the D, but not much with his 3rd and 7+ first down conversion stats(AWFUL!!!!).

My predictions

SEC EAST
1. Florida- 12-0: Gators get Ole Miss off their schedule and a bye week before LSU. The Florida vs. UGA game will be close due to UGA’s bye week. Expect an undefeated season but a loss in the SEC Championship ala Alabama in 2008.
2. Tennessee- 9-3: The Vols home schedule is very easy, the only loss they will have at home is to UGA.
3. Georgia-8-4: Dawgs schedule is too tough and they’re too green at too many key positions to be any better than this.
4. Kentucky- 7-5: The Wildcats are a better team than people think. They definately have the potential to make a bowl this year.
5. South Carolina-5-7: Stephen Garcia is terrible! I’m calling it right now. This will be Spurrier’s last season in Columbia.
6. Vanderbilt- 4-8: The Commodores might pull off an upset and play some ranked teams close, but they’ll still finish with a losing record.

@ Ok State 5-3 Tuff
H USC 4-4 Not So
@ Ark 2-6 Not So
H ASU 4-5 Not So
H LSU 3-5 Tuff
@ UT 3-5 Not So
@ Vandy 4-4 Not So

H Tenn Tech 1-7 Not So

We will struggle at times becasue we have the toughest schedule in the country but take note……By Oct 30 we will be well rested and hitting on all cylinders. Let me start out with that the SEC is tough again as normal. UGA has got the team to be in every game and could win every game although very unlikely that will happen. Fla. Ala. and LSU are in the same situation. So it comes down to coaching and breaks and could throw in a little of Larry;s Lady Luck. I think Florida’s easy schedule could hurt them more than it helps them. I’m of the philosophy that a more difficult schedule keeps a team focused and hungry. I am interested to see what happens at RB and WR this year. I am hoping for exciting things from both but that hope is tempered by my lack of faith in Bobo’s play calling. Let’s get fancy at midfield rather than 2 yards out this year coach!

Defenseive performance will be defined by discipline…and we are obviously off to a rough start!

Next, I am interested to see if UF can keep it going. Losing to Ole Miss may have been a fluke last year…but this year a loss could be a little more difficult for Reverend Tebow and his congregation to overcome. Does he have any bullets left?

cmon, dude…last year florida’s schedule was ranked 4th toughest in the nation, and in 2006, the most difficult. year after year other schools (mostly non-SEC fans) complain when FL has a cream puff (or two) on sked, but it’s always offset by tougher comp elsewhere.

stop yer whining. admittedly Fl’s schedule is easier this year, but we still play LSU EVERY Year (arguably the best team of the decade)…and last year we played the 2007 Nat Champs AND the 2008 preseason National champs.

Gators certainly seem to be the class of the conference. They are not invincible but will be sure as hell hard to beat. Especially if Tebow stays and delays his ascension into heaven.

UGA will be good as long as someone steps up for them at rb. They will have a veteran O-line and it all starts with the O-line.

3rd place to me is a toss-up between Vandy which could have another bowl in them with 18 starters back, Kentucky, which seems to be gradually getting better, and South Carolina depending of course on whether or not Garcia can stay out of trouble and come through.

I actually think UT may well end up last. I just don’t think a whole lot of Kiffin but the really big thing to me is that they have lost 11 scholarship players since Kiffin arrived including some potentially key players like Ahmad Paige. How can anyone think they won’t have some serious issues after just losing 11 players who weren’t freshman. Add to that their qb woes and I think it will be another long season for the Vols.

Glad to see JB got the jump on the dawghaters but apparently it still didn’t do a whole lotta good. Still the same cast of characters coming on with their lame, used up 45-42 drivel and such.

the parody in college football is such, that anyone can beat anyone of a given saturday. these kids are 18 or so years old and the coach that can maintain his teams focus the longest tends to win most. uga has lost some key players, but you have to lean a little on the fact that cmr has done some amazing things with the dawgs and trust that he hasn’t given up the ‘09 season. lane kiffen is unproven and tenn. has been a non-factor for a while. uf has a good thing going and myers seems to be one of those coaches that keeps his teams focus (slipped once last season). the ole ball coach doesn’t seem to have his mojo anymore and garcia doesn’t appear to be much of a winner. lsu is a MUCH better team than their ‘08 season record would suggest (Tech can testify to this!). that jefferson kid is a stud athelete and he has put them on track. alabama is going to rise up put themselves in a position to win a lot of games….all that said, this is going to be an exciting season of football! why you sec folk make such a fuss about the acc is a mystery to me…you’re ALL going to have your hands full! worry about the acc when you survivors make it to the bowl games! The last 2 games LSU has played in TUSCALOOSA has not been easy. In 07 LSU SHould have lost and would have if JPW doesn’t fumble with less than 2 min left. In 05, the game that decided the west that year, it went to overtime, and remember that was a MIKE SHULA COACHED TEAM!!!!! So, with talent being close and Saban at the helm with home field, and Les Miles still coaching LSU, MY MONEY IS ON BAMA!!!!!

buckblue,

I didn’t understand your pick of LSU to win the west LSU won only 3 conference games last year and was destroyed at home by an Ole Miss that returns most of their team. LSU lost numerous great D-lineman and a couple of great O-lineman.

But the biggest thing about LSU is that 3 of their 4 toughest games are on the road UGA and division rivals Ole Miss and Bama. They get Florida at home but its Florida so we can probably chalk that one up as a loss.

Additionally, Bama and Ole Miss both get to avoid the 2 big boys in the east Florida and UGA. LSU could be better than both Ole Miss and Bama and still not get to the seccg by virtue simply of the scheduling which very heavily favors Ole Miss and Bama.

Also, I didn’t understand your criticism of Bama’s new qb McElroy. He is a 4th year junior so he knows the offense very well. In spring practices and in the A-day game he was impressive in locking down the qb spot. He also was 16 of 20 in real game experience which is 80% completion rate. Exactly how will there be a dropoff at qb?

Sanford Drive the W is close to the E and the Z is below the S sorry for the errors but that doesn’t change the facts. UGA is overrated always because of the “talent” they get and then play a schedule that should get them 7-8 wins eazy with that “talent”. The past few years we have not delivered against UGA and in the bowl games I will admit, but isn’t that because TECH can only recruit players UGA didn’t want, as the recruiting blogs always state? I type on the blog as stream of thought like most and that doesn’t require grammer does it?

KC, I’m not complaining. UF earned it. I hope UGA can get the UF monkey off their back and dominate the SEC like UF has allowing UGA to take easier schedules.

Who has UF played OOC from a BCS conf. other than FSU and Miami in ‘08, ‘03, ‘02 during the regular season? You have to go all the way back to ‘90 for Oklahoma St to find a regular season OOC game from a BCS conf. excluding FSU and Miami. Auburn or UGA would have a hard time winning a national title before the recent SEC title run with that schedule. No doubt it is tough enough in my eyes but not the national medias eyes.

For the people claiming LSU will win the west, they have a much tougher road than Bama with both UGA and UF on LSU’s schedule. I think by midseason people will be asking why McElroy was not starting earlier.

buckblue,

McElroy’s stats speak for themselves. Although he played sparingly, 16 out of 20 passing is pretty impressive in anybody’s book.

I don’t know which is funnier. You annointment of Jordan Jefferson as the truth after one decent game or your glorification of Russell Shepard who has never played a down of college football. You’re too funny.

We can talk about Bama’s 2 game losing streak to national champion Florida and 13-0 Utah which finished as the runnerup. Or we can talk about LSU winning only 3 conference games last year and taking buttwhoopings at home to UGA, Ole Miss, Bama beat em at tiger stadium, etc. Man, I even think you lost to that horrible Arkansas team. Is that true or am I mistaken?

I can’t bust on you too much over Bama beating you in the so called “death valley”. After all, that is our “home away from home”. I believe we went through a 19 game unbeaten streak playing in tiger stadium from 1969 to 2003. Nick Saban finally beat us in 04. But 20 out of the last 22 in your house is still pretty good. As a matter of fact I think that type of domination gives us the right to say that tiger stadium is “our house”.

I like the Gators to run the table (big surprise, right?), but we’ve never done it before, and we all know how tough that is in the SEC, so I’m not counting on it. This s/b the best defense we’ve ever put on the field, though, and defense wins championships. We have a lot of leadership with Tebow and Spikes among others, coming back..

I think the Dawgs will field a better team this year than last year – tougher, more disciplined and back to more old school football. But with the tough schedule, it probably won’t make much difference in the final record.

I think Tennessee is going to have a rough year. They are very thin at OL, don’t have much talent on offense, and have a pretty tough schedule. With several coaches who’d like to give Kiffin a personal beat down, I think they will be lucky if they go .500 in the regular season. Hopefully, they quit embarrassing us out of conference, though. Freaking Wyoming. They’re gonna have to watch out for the Ohio Bobcats this year. And don’t forget Memphis.

Vandy just might finish 3rd in the East, which doesn’t say a lot for the East this year.

The SEC West s/b real tough, though. Bama, LSU and Ole Miss should all have strong teams, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Arky pulls an upset or two, with Petrino’s offense in its second year.

Oaktown, Auburn has the talent for an upset or 2. Unfortunately Auburn likes to upset UF or UGA and UF is not on the schedule. An Auburn win over LSU would not surprise me in the least. braveshater – I love Hernandez, but you’re right that Gresham is the number one TE in the nation. My guess is that Hernandez is next behind him. Whether or not that is true, Hernandez is a big match up problem for most teams, and Tebow and the coaches know they can rely on him. Hernandez will have a big year, this year.

We could easily end up 4-8 if the team has similar performances like any of the following at any point during the season: 1) the first half of the Bama game 2) the second half of the FLorida game 3) the third quarter of the Tech game. Complete shut down. Sitting on the bench looking like deer in the headlights. Or standing on the field looking like deer in the headlights. I sure hope the leaders step up and play with fire. 12 NATIONAL TITLES – 21 SEC TITLES!!!

Should be a very interesting year in the SEC.

SEC East – Urban is the man. The rest looks like the ACC – all capable teams – nobody great. That includes UGA.

UGA could get double digit wins – or have a painful 7 win season with several tight losses. Every game should be exciting – sure wins are AZ State and TN Tech. Florida, LSU and OK State will be monsters for UGA, Several upset games along the way.

SEC WEST – BAMA/LSU will be duking it out – Ole Miss will be the spoiler. NOT DISRESPECTING OLE MISS – but I think Ole Miss will be as good as they will be under Houston Nutt – as good as the Jim Donnan teams (which were very good – but lacked consistency). Arkansas and Auburn will be a handful.
LSU – should be very good.
BAMA – should have better overall depth – need solid QB leadership.

Who will be better – BAMA or LSU. 50/50 at best – will be a great game – have respect for Miles – terrific coach and recruiter.

Regarding Auburn – I like their staff – and they are athletic. Defense should be very good – if offense clicks – they could get on a roll at the end of the season. UGA/Auburn game could be a big win for Auburn.

SEC in 2009:
CREAM: Florida
Next wave #1: BAMA/LSU.

IGNORE IDIOTS.

UGA will be better as a team than 2008 but the talent at QB and RB will be a big dropoff. The OL will make things easier but there has gotta be some offensive innovation in order for this team to avg 400 yards and 30 points. Losing the rush DE for the first 2 games will hurt but there are others that will provide depth.

Believe it or not, I think the D will carry this team and the O will put up enough points to win a lot of games. I look for Grey to play a lot, especially in certain situations.

I see the florida game as being the only game that the talent on paper is not the same or better. Tech will need to unveil some new stuff in order to do the kind of things that some of these idiots think they can do. I would worry about beating VT, UVA and UNC first. If you don’t do that, you are heading back to the chicken bowl and we all know how that turned out.

I see 10-2 for the Dawgs. If the gators don’t have some folks step up at WR, they could stumble but the Florida version of Herschel overrides a lot of stuff.

Still insisting that Bama has a long history of making payments starting with the Bear. Really? It funny but no one on campus has seen Julio with an Escalade. Where is this imaginary escalade that no one has seen? Also, it seems to me that if you are going to accuse Nick Saban of making payments to players then wouldn’t he have done the same at LSU considering he was there for 5 years. Or at Mich. State or Kent St?

LSU has had a good run here in the 2000s thanks to the talent base that Saban built and left with Miles. Seems you guys need to get over the fact that Saban isn’t there anymore and that you’re stuck with Miles the hatter. You’re just mad because LSU has always lived in the shadow of the Alabama program in the west. You had a good run in the 2000s, its over, and now you’re going back to your corner now that the king in the west is back on his throne.

I got your money ready for you when you can prove a single payment made to a single player by Saban or Bear Bryant. I also have a nice, paid off SUV. I’ll throw that in also as a bonus. All you got to do is prove the BS you keep spouting. I’m sure you got more than BS. Don’t you?????

Tide rising, we are “stuck with Miles”? Miles has proven that he can recruit as good as Saban and arguably as good as anyone in the nation. He may not be as eloquent a speaker as Saban but he is a very good coach. You don’t win championships with just good players as you have alluded to. It takes coaching, recruiting, sound planning and luck. Actually I like Nick but he has his faults too. There was no excuse for you losing to UL-Monroe in 2007 and then to Utah in January. Just like there was no excuse for us losing to UAB in 2000 under Saban. Miles likewise has lost games we should not have lost. That’s the way it is. Hopefully you win alot more than you lose. BTW yes you had your run in Tiger Stadium but we have also had our run in Tuscaloosa. When is the last time we lost there? We have our share of poor sports but I have found over the years that there seems to be more classless Bama fans than ever such as Saint Nick. I don’t understand why both sides can’t just admit that both LSU and Bama are strong programs instead of these personal attacks.

You know, Fl might never give up another point, but it seems like every few years there is somebody “unbeatable” or will revolutionize the game, and somehow the game kind of levels everything out over time. Lots of pieces have to come together, and everything cycles.

Cuz, we have a Thing 3 and 4 too… it’ll be contagious to Kade Weston and DeAngelo Tyson.

Cornelius Washington is the kid I’m anxious to see on the field. Do you know if he burned his redshirt? Right now, I think they listed him as a soph.

My top 2 RB should be Richard Samuel and Carlton Thomas. Caleb King demoted to 3rd.. Washaun Ealey and Dontavous Jackson vied for 4th. We’ll be okay at the backfield.. it’ll be by committee like we did with Kregg Lumpkin, Danny Ware and Thomas Brown.. unless Samuel just absolutely separate himself from the pack. He has one weakness.. FUMBLEITIS.. it’s curable though.

I just returned from listening to CMR at the Savannah Bulldog Club meeting. Simply said there cannot be a better human being on earth. I would not trade him for any coach anywhere. To my fellow Dawg fans who from time to time talk about CMR being under pressure or even suggesting he should be replaced, just shut up. We can do no better.

So far, Branden Smith, Arbry Jones, Chase Vasser, Austin Long, Michael Gilliard, Rantavious Wooten, Arthur Lynch & Chris Burnette made it in.

Branden Smith should get plenty of PTs out of this group.

Seriously?? Was that even called for? CMR is a great man on and off the field. You need to do some research before typing.

UGA’s season will depend on injuries and how many stupid penalties we get called for. Last year could have been much better w/o the flags.

machrotech – lane kiffen is unproven and tenn. has been a non-factor for a while.

I guess winning the East in 07-08 hmm 2 years ago was a non factor right? and only losing to LSU by 7 in the SEC championship after the game was close basically the whole way ’til Ainge sealed it with his pick six throw.and nice spelling of Kiffin. I know it’s difficult to think and actually put down words that have any logic at all

Florida’s backup QB, John Brantley, would probably be starting on most of the other SEC teams
