The problem with any playoff system is the selection of the participants. However given the structure of college football, it is impossible to fairly select the "best" teams to participate. Fundamental problems with FBS admission, scheduling, and recruiting processes will doom any post season.

The requirements to become an FBS team are way to low. an FBS team, an institution must be title 9 compliant, give ~$4 million dollars in scholarships, average 15000 in attendance for a 2 year period and get a conference. There is no requirement on coaching salaries, facilities, victories or anything that truly rates the quality of the football program. Once an institution obtains FBS status, it has never been taken away. Idaho hasn't averaged 15000+ in the last 3 years but still is a FBS team. These teams can not compete with major conferences but they litter the MWC, MAC, WAC and Sun Belt conferences and weaken the claims of the legitimate contenders from these conferences. A solid review of all FBS institutions needs to occur and the reduction of the FBS to only those institutions that commit enough resources to produce a competitive team.

Each FBS institution makes its' out of conference schedule. This along with the huge variance between FBS teams creates a significant difference in strength of schedule. This system prevents any objective way to differentiate between teams with difference records in different conferences.
The FBS would need to centralize scheduling to eliminate significant differences in SOS that a 12-0 record in the MWC would be equal to a 12-0 record in the PAC-10.

Recruiting is NOT like the NFL Draft. Recruiting is not about parity and equality in College Football. A team can get the top 15-20 players in every class if they have the right coaches, facilities, location, exposure and academics. USC is ALWAYS in the top 10 in recruiting and the result on the field is the same.

The new 85 scholarship limitation has added some parity to the game but it costs ~1785 (15 * 119) young men (most of them poor) per year an opportunity at a higher education.
Until these issues are addressed. Any post season will be shrouded in controversy.

Lower the number of regular season games to 10, use the 4 major bowls as first round of playoffs and then let cities bid for the final 4 and the championship. It makes too much sense though...it'll never happen.

The current system is pathetic and not worthy of the Great sport...college football.

You have one fake championship game and then a bunch of meaningless bowl games. The twelfth game added to the regular season is just a bunch of patsies to bilk the season tickets holders out of more money. There is not one damne thing about the current system that is worth saving.

Institute a 16 game playoff system immediately. It would be the most exciting sporting event in the history of the world. It will make the Nfl playoffs and Super Bowl look minor in comparison.

If the lying bastisges that run the BcS now won't do the right thing....then congress should step in and make them do the right thing.....even if BcS fools like Tony Barnyard don't like it.

In the largest AMATEUR sports we have, it is not about winning championships it is about who gets the money. That is why the power schools will always be power schools and the bottom feeders will always be bottom feeders.

"What I expected were members of Congress asking thoughtful, probing but tough questions in order increase their understanding of the BCS."

That's so cute!
(Just kidding, Tony. I love your work. You are always way ahead of the curve.)

You have also played 30+ more games than OSU and Michigan and 70+ more games than Michigan. % is a much better indicator than Alabama filling up on patsies (and cheating on top of it)

The last decade Alabama has been beaten by Louisana Monroe.

Alabama is 33rd in wins in the last decade
Alabama is 36th in win % in the last decade.

Attention: Bear Bryant is no longer with us. Keep living over the last 100 years. The last decade shows Alabama is a has been.

JJ,

That's nice but we have more total wins than anyone with 748. Texas is 2nd with 743 and ND is 3rd with 742.
