Will this be UGA’s best O-Line since 2002?

Athens—When a season fails to meet expectations, as was the case at Georgia in 2008, fans and media tend to concentrate on what went wrong. And by any objective measure a lot went wrong on the Georgia defense last season after it finished 10th in the SEC in scoring (24.5 ppg).

Lost in shuffle of a “disappointing” 10-3 season was the fact that offensive coordinator Mike Bobo and OL coach Stacy Searels did some of their best work.

That’s because a team that played musical chairs with its offensive line, the way Georgia had to do last season, is not supposed to finish third in the SEC in scoring (31.5 ppg). And when left tackle Trinton Sturdivant injured his left knee in preseason, that’s exactly what Georgia had to do. Over the course of 13 games last season Georgia’s offensive line:

**–Had six different players start one of the two tackle positions.

**–Had six different players start at one of the two guard positions.

**–Had two different players start at center.

**–Georgia’s longest stretch of starting the same offensive line was only four games.

By contrast, Alabama started the same offensive line in 11 out of 14 games last season. If LT Andre Smith had not been suspended for the Sugar Bowl, it would have been 12 out of 14. At the end of last season Alabama’s offensive line had collectively started 117 career games.

“The only way you become a dominant offensive line is when guys have been playing with one another—not just one season but a couple of years,” Bobo said when I visited with him last Friday. “Two years ago we were dealing with youth. Last year we were dealing with a lot of injuries. We had to do a lot of scratching and clawing to get things done but coach Searels did a great job. This year we’re hoping all of that is going to pay off.”

If Georgia can get a break on the injuries, this looks like the deepest and most talented offensive line since the SEC championship year of 2002. Sturdivant is not going through contact but he has gotten stronger in the upper body. Clint Boling played every position on the offensive line but center last season, which is a big plus. Sophomore Cordy Glenn (6-5, 340) is going to be a star—a big star. He can play guard or tackle. Ben Jones started the last 10 games at center as a true freshman. That’s not supposed to happen in the SEC.

“Ben Jones is the definition of a football player,” said Bobo. “To do what he did is unreal.”

There are a bunch of other guys who have proven they start and play in this league: Chris Davis, Vince Vance, Tanner Strickland, Josh Davis. And the list keeps growing.

“What we have to do now is find the right five guys and where they should go,” Bobo said. “Then they’ve got to work together as a unit.”

This process will very important. It doesn’t take an advanced degree to figure out that with a first-year starter at quarterback (Joe Cox) and a veteran offensive line, Georgia will run the ball more in 2009. Georgia was fifth in the SEC in rushing last season (148.3 ypg). Georgia averaged 32.7 rushing attempts and 30.76 passing attempts per game. Expect more rushing attempts.

With the exit of QB Matthew Stafford and RB Knowshon Moreno there will be the tendency to sell this offense short. Bobo will have none of that talk.

“I’ve already told my guys that we have everything we need here to win a championship,” said Bobo. “There is no doubt in my mind about that.

Later today I’ll be in Knoxville to watch Tennessee’s practice. I’ll report to you in the morning.

The line will be pretty dawg gone good. Biggest issue I see is the running backs making something happen at the second level.

They got yards, just not the 3 they needed when they needed it. The fact that they simply could never line it up and power ahead, and everynbody on the other side knew it, and still they finished as well as they did, speaks very highly of the coaching staff.

Would have loved to have MS and KM back this year, but having a Ben Crenshaw moment about this upcoming season. Joe Cox will be beyond serviceable and RB by committee will be fine. Defense has to step up it’s attitude and execution to have any prayer of being an SEC contender.

Coach Searels is one of the best Coaches in football. Georgia needs to do all we can to keep him as long as possible. I agree that this years O-line resembles that of 2002. All we need is consistent management at the QB spot and we can click. I believe that we have at least three RB’s that can handle the load. With A.J and Marlon on the outside and guys like Mike Moore and Durham, the Offense should be in good shape. Please Willie lets tackle!!!

Good read TB,
Much has been said of our lines over the past couple of years. Would have been nice to see Stafford and Moreno play behind the big uglies this year. Outside of both lines, I firmly believe that the leaders will rise this year and make this team great. Stafford and Moreno were not the leaders that they should have been. I will never forget the look on Staffords face on the sidelines in Jax. He was scared. Cox will do the job behind a great O-line.

Agree that the running game will be used more and in different fashion. King and Thomas will split duty out there.

The ling was supposed to be solid last year. Overall I think the OL will be good maybe not ‘02 level because CMR recruits QBs heavier than OL. Look at Bama the lines win games even with a mediocre QB. The key is still our DL.

The offense is better off under Cox as Bobo will be forced to work his way down the field not blowing drivings with the long pass.

Bobo did some of his best work? How was our red zone offense?

UGA should have a GREAT OL. The D will be suspect and much pressure on an O without Moreno and Stafford. If the DAWGS are in 5th gear, mentally and physically, I think a 11-2 or 10-3 season is something to aim for this year…..as usual it comes down to Jacksonville.

Tony, the real question is how bad will Tech beat ugag? The answer is most likely pretty bad. ugag couldn’t stop TECH last year while Tech was still learning the offense, with no depth, an injury-decimated offensive line, etc. Also, Paul Johnson gets a kick out of whipping the dawgies and is planning to make a habit of it…like George O’leary did. ugag’s defense was TOTALLY clueless about how to slow down Tech’s offense and is likely to be even more clueless this year as Paul Johnson unveils more of his offense. It is going to be fun to watch you dawgies squirm.

It was documented prior to the 2008 opener that UGA had ample depth on the OL. To have the measure of success they had last year was not only a testament to the coaching staff, but to the players as well. At this point I gotta give Stafford his due. He was reading the D’s and did a good job working with his make-shift fronts during the year. That was truly one of his forte’s and helped keep things from going bad offensively. If Cox can read D schemes as well as Stafford, there shouldn’t be too many beats missed on the O side…

Tony,

You hit the nail on the head this time. Their is nothing as important to a team as the offensive line having cohesiveness, having their timing down together, consistency, etc. That was the whole key to Bama’s season last year. The 3 starters who left had all played alongside each other for 3 years and had gradually gelled together. Losing Andre Smith a day or 2 before the Sugar Bowl was bad but losing our great guard Michael Johnson in the early first qtr was equally bad. People just don’t realize how losing just 2 o-lineman can make a big difference.

In UGAs case last year that would be really difficult to have 1 or 2 different starters every week or every other week. You would never really get that consistency that you need from the o-line.

Anyway, if the dawgs can stay injury free on the o-line and have the consistency of players that an O-line needs than they can look forward to a successful season.

Staint Drip, skipped school? Have you ever gone to school? From your handle, I guess you’re an Alabama fan. UA has a nice little second tier engineering school. You should be proud of that. Way to go. It’s cute. It really is.

Did a tech fan actually just say that Nesbitt will play on Sundays, which something that UGA QBs never do? Although UGA does not have but two to play QB on sundays (andy johnson played FB) we have a hall of fame QB in Fran Tarkenton. What Tech QB has ever played on Sundays? And if Nesbitt is the Robot because he is so “automatic”, why does he fumble so much. You should have your nerds take a look at his programming.

m that is assuming GT can afford the bus ticket after what GT owes to Hewitt and Johnson.

A UGA grad as Hewitt’s agent and 1 loss in football resulting in signing Johnson to one of the largest contracts in the ACC after a mediocre season and one win over their rival is priceless to UGA. UGA is in good shape after strapping GT for cash not that is ever a concern. Back in Athens UGA has plenty of cash on hand. Which school has the better business school?

UGA is not locked down in a contract like GT is in BB and FB. If he works out great if not let him go and get someone else.

Lots of smack talk on here as usual. Gator people can talk smack because they can back it up. They have won the past 16 of 10 against our Dawgs and that is a heck of a statement. I do not like them but my hat is off for them. Tech people talking smack is like taking a water gun to a real gun fight. However, I do not wish to get in a spitting contest. I played for a gentleman and I will conduct myself as one. You win with class and you lose with class. The ironic thing is the majority of Tech players do not talk that much class. Most of the players we grew up and competed against each other and still talk as friends to this day. It is the fans who sit, watch and most have never even played the great game we all cherish. I had the pleasure of being a Dawg from 1980-83. I am proud to say I competed against both the Gators and Jackets and never lost to either. The football season can be long and hard. Trust me by the time the Dawgs play the Jackets they are beat up, sore and getting ready for exams. The same goes for the Jackets. The game is beyond emotional for both groups. Anything can happen and the best team does not always win. Wins and losses run in cycles. Tech has a good coach in Johnson. He reminds me of Pepper Rodgers. He has brought some fire to Tech and the fans and alumni appreciate that. The key is can you keep him? You better go to the games or he will not stay if another school comes calling. My last comment is for RAMBLE ON. Do you realize how big of a fool you are making of yourself on here? You can brag because you did win last year but give it a break. You are going overboard.

delusions of grandeur (noun)
a delusion (common in paranoia and often found in Yellow Jacket fans) that you are much greater and more powerful and influential than you really are. Example: Georgia Tech wins one game against Georgia in eight years and all of a sudden they have delusions of grandeur.
Common explanation: Even a blind hog finds an acorn now and then.

12 National Titles – 21 SEC Titles!!!

I agree with Tony’s article regarding UGA’s O-Line being a work in progress for several years.

How did UGA get into the O-Line situation a few years ago? Poor recruiting??? Injuries??? Academics??? A combination of all three????? add in some bad luck?????

Where has the UGA Defense been the last 3 years????? Since Van Gorder left – UGA’s defense just does not strike fear into anybody.

Bobo is seriously joking when he says UGA will be SEC championship caliper.

Since 2005 season – UGA teams have been similar to the Jim Donnan era – fielding good athletic teams – but getting blown out at least one or two times a year – and trouble breaking into the Elite group. Jim Donnan teams were always considered “the next level” of good teams after talking about which teams are truly relevent to National and Conference Title contenders.

In the EAST:
– Florida is the beast in the EAST. Big time seperation between Florida and the rest of the East. Meyer is obviously the real deal. How soon will he leave for either Notre Dame or the NFL?

The rest of the east:
– Tennessee – all eyes are on Knoxville to see if and when (how soon) they put UGA in the rear view mirror going after the Gators.
– So. Carolina – will they beat UGA again between the hedges??? SC’s biggest SEC east rival in terms of hate is UGA. UGA does not consider this team a rival (If I am UGA – I would feel the same as AUBURN, FLORIDA and TENNESSEE are the rival teams). Spurrier has recruited well the last few years – and they are close – but seem to fizzle midway through the season. Unfortunately for UGA – you have to play them early.

In the West:
– LSU has been the best program for several years while Bama was in self-induced exile. After going through a recharge year in 2008 – will be top notch in 2009.
– Bama has passed UGA in recruiting and coaching – depth is now on par. Talent is a notch above. In short – Bama passed UGA in 2 short years after hiring Nick Saban and coming off probation. ON par with LSU – this should be a great game this year – 50/50)
- OLE Miss appears to be better than UGA as well. They picked up steam and will have key players returning next year. Reminds me of UGA 2007 – in that they finished amazaingly well from where they started and earned respect.
Big question for Ole Miss – can they keep it going and earn more respect – or will they fall back and lose position and the respect of the SEC leaders like UGA did last year.

That makes UGA either the 4th/5th or 6th best team in the SEC – very Jim Donnanesque!!!!!!!! And UGA appears to be holding serve at best from 2008 to 2009. May not be as good in 2009 – but not too far off form 2008. Zero improvement. 2010 appears to be more of the same as UGA will be breaking in a new QB.

POSITION BREAKDOWN:
O-Line – will be improved.
QB – Cox is a leader – which may compensate for average at best physical skills. Nothing special here.
RB – Nothing special at this position. Samuel is a big stiff back (should be a LB) and King is doing good to be an average SEC back.
WR – this is a strength for UGA – rate high in the league
TE – fallen off for UGA from year’s past – will call it average at best.

Defense:
D-line – Interior will be OK if Jeff Owens can make it back 100%.
D-Ends – Hello??? anybody out there???
LB – undersized Curren is a beast – the rest are the same as KY, Vandy, Auburn, MS State – all teams seem to be athletic – but nothing stands out or seperates from teams mentioned above.
CB – Miller is the only person with real experience. Average.
Safeties – athletic and physical – but worst tacklers in Richt era.

How does 2009 shape up for UGA?????
LOSSES:
FLORIDA – another Goff era blow out in store for UGA.
LSU – will win by 2 touchdowns in Athens. LSU much improved.
OK STATE (OK State returning a very good team and should be much improved over a solid 2008 team – can’t say the same about UGA). Also – this is a key game for OK STATE in terms of making a statement. They have a lot to gain in beating UGA – UGA has a lot to lose if they get beat by OK STATE.

50/50 games
GT – (GT will be improved – will be hard fought and close game)

SO. CAROLINA – (SC and UGA always make this an ugly – ugly knife fight in a ditch game – expect the same. If UGA fumbles or does the stupid penalty thing at the worse possbile moment – like the did in 2008 – then the chickens will win this game).

ARKANSAS – at Arkansas – Petrino is a good coach and Ark was playing pretty good at the end of last season – I think Ark and Tennessee will be the most improved teams over last year. Overlook this team – and you will get bit. UGA shows up to play – they should win.

TENNESSEE – upset written all over this one. Tennessee defense will keep them in the game – if improvements are made with the offense – they will be in position to beat UGA. I look for Tennessee to be a handfull sooner than later – Kiffin likes playing the fool – but he has masterfully put Tennessee on the minds of many big time national recruits – and he has a serious coaching staff. Also, he is putting some 80’s era swagger into the Vols. College Footbal just may be his niche.

AUBURN – as bad as Auburn was last year – man did they come close to beating UGA. Like Tennessee – Defense will be very good – if offense improves – game on!!! UGA should win this game – but I have seen too many bizarre games between these two schools where the clear cut favorite lays an egg. Plus the game is in Athens – and Auburn seems to play better there against UGA than at Jordan-Hare.

WINS
AZ STATE – UGA will win this game – rather easily I would suspect.
VANDY – likes to give teams a good scare – but UGA will win
KY – if in the ACC or B10 – KY would be top 5 in those conferences.
TN Tech – easy win.

BOWL GAME:
BCS Title game – Florida could be making a repeat.
Sugar: Bama or LSU (hope we do not meet Utah!!!)
Cap One: LSU/Bama/Ole Miss
Cotton: Ole Miss/LSU/Bama
Outback: UGA/TN/Aub/SC
Chick-fil-a: UGA/TN/AUB/SC
Music City: UGA/TN/AUB/SC

Same as 2008 – the 2009 campaign will be razor thin MARGIN between a 7/8 win season and a 10 win season.

UGA will not be as good as 2008 but will not drop off too much.
UGA got some luck against Auburn and Kentucky last year – easily could have lost those two games – but UGA pulled them out.

2009 Regular season record?
- maybe as good as 9-3??!!!
- could be as bad as 7-5 if the breaks go to the other team.
- Guessing probably 8-4 (which makes you a saint in Nashville, Columbia or Lexington) – but is a failure in Gainesville, Baton Rouge, Knoxville and T-Town.

Look for more of the same in 2010 – when UGA is breaking in a new QB.
Like I said earlier – lost the MOJO after 2005 – and UGA is settling into being just a good program – athletic, will play you hard – but hard pressed to break through to the next level and stay relevent – much like the Jim Donnan teams in the late 90’s. Good teams – but just not good enough to be top 10 – always “the next level” of good teams.

ROLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL TIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pathetic day on this page. First off, the state of Georgia is extremely lucky to have two fine institutes of higher learning. Both Tech and UGA have different courses of study and programs that are ranked as some of the best in the country. You won’t see me knocking Tech’s academics because I do respect them for what they do. Second, yes our defense did not show up last year. Poor coaching, poor execution just killed us. Total yardage for us was 488 so our offense definitely did its job. Congrats on the win BTW. Too bad about the bowl game though. Just wanted to clear up a few misconceptions about Alabama’s claim to 12 national championships based on fact rather than bias. Credit is given where credit is due.
To clear up confusion, the word retroactive means they went back in time to award the championship.
‘TWELVE’ national championships is fraudulent, nothing but pure bunk. Here’s a rundown:
1925 National Championship- Alabama claims they share this one with Dartmouth. Who awarded the NC? Houlgate and Helms. Houlgate started his system in 1927. So Bama won their 1925 NC using a formula that didn’t exist until 1927? Helms Athletic Foundation started in 1941. Another incredible retroactive NC.
The Associated Press Poll has been active since 1936. The AP took their final poll prior to bowl games from 1936 – 1964 and in 1966 and 1967. They took their final poll after the bowl games in 1965 and from 1968 – Current.
1926 National Championship- Alabama claims they share this one with 3 other teams with equal or better records! Once again it is the Helms Athletic Foundation in 1941 that awards it!
1930 National Championship- The Davis poll says that Bama tied Notre Dame for NC this year. This was the only one to award it to Bama. Notre Dame was named NC in 6 polls! Parke Davis is another retroactive system! He (an individual, not an organization) did his in 1933!
1934 National Championship- Alabama says they share this with two other teams. The awarders are Dunkel, Williamson, and Football Thesaurus. Dunkel was an individual who came up with his own system. Williamson was a geologist who came up with his own system. Football Thesaurus first appeared in 1946!
1941 National Championship- This is a complete joke. The AP ranked Alabama 20th in the nation with 14 teams with better records in the top 20. Once again it is the Football Thesaurus that retroactively awards it. Alabama finished 3rd in the SEC that year. Mississippi State won the SEC title..yet Bama claims a National title!
1961 National Championship- Finally a legitimate NC. .
1964 National Championship- While the AP did award the NC to Bama (10-1-0), Arkansas had the better record, 11-0. Alabama played Texas in their bowl and LOST. The AP final poll was before the bowl.
1965 National Championship- The AP gave this to Bama. That year there were three teams with better records than Bama. Bama 9-1-1, Michigan St 10-1-0, Arkansas 10-1-0, Nebraska 10-1-0.
1973 National Championship- AP puts Bama 4th after their bowl game loss. Bama claims a NC from the UPI poll that was taken before they met Notre Dame in the bowl game and lost. There were 3 teams with better records than Bama that year. The embarrassment of naming Alabama number one caused the UPI to name champions after bowl games. Yet Bammer has no shame in claiming it of course.
1978 National Championship- AP gives this to Alabama(11-1-0) even though USC (12-1-0) had the better record Guess who Alabama lost to that year? USC!!!!!!!!!. UPI gave the NC to USC.
1979 National Championship- Their second legitimate NC. Their first Unanimous NC.
1992 National Championship- Their third legitimate NC. Their second Unanimous NC.

Let me get a couple of things straight.
1) “Nesbitt will be playing on Sundays and UGA never has QBs playing on Sundays.”
Please name one GT QB that has played on Sunday or even sat the bench on Sunday recently. UGA has at least 3 QB’s that were at least on NFL rosters in the last 5 years and is about to have on be the number 1 player taken in the draft.

2)”Rivals and Scout call Stephen Hill a more polished AJ Green with better hands.”
I guess that is why Rivals had AJ Green as a 5 star player and one of the top 5 overall players in the country and Stephen Hill was a 3 star and the 99th ranked receiver in the country.

RAMBLESteveKneejerkONSuperior, I’ve read your posts over time bashing those UGA fans who “dare” to post on the GT blogs, and here your are floundering away. Have you adopted a new posting name, “m”, to go with your other post names? I noticed the two of you talking back and forth and it reminded me of when RAMBLE ON and Steve Superior were basically saying the same thing and supporting each others comments. You were cracking yourself up at that time.

Actually, I don’t think you and “m” are one and the same unless you’ve taken the approach of bashing yourself. You should have seen this recent Tech post. No UGA fans were posting and stirring the pot and all these GT fans began to rip “m” about his incessant line about thanking “God and greyhound” for Gailey being gone. I’m telling you, it was hilarious. These guys don’t need us to throw out insults, they have themselves to attack. Go check it out for yourselves. The article is “Marcus Wright emerges”. These guys cannot be real Tech engineering grads. They act more like a vicious pack of attorneys.

By the way, RAMBLESteveKneejerkONSuperior, I see you are the head of the Spelling Bee today. You utterly disdain those who criticize someone’s spelling, however, there you are – front and center – being Queen Bee for a day. Please do get back with me and let me “no” if I spelled something wrong, okay?

You two are a real piece of work. The ball’s in your court, let the insults and vulgar language fly. Show us how you’re the “intellectually superior” tech fans. I’ll be patiently waiting.

Good point. I did forget to mention the ‘90 GT team. I saw them play at UVA that year when I was in grad school in C’ville. I understand everyone has a favorite team and they want the best for them but college football runs in cycles just like fl feel off after their first nc and lsu fell off, uga fell off last year. But with programs like these a bad season is considered 9 to 10 wins and not making the nc game. Lesser programs like one in atlanta that will remain nameless prays for the sucess that thes sec schools have. Every elite team in the sec(fla, ga, and tenn in the east; lsu, and bama in the west) has a chance each year to be a nc if things come together. So uga is down by our standards don’t be suprised if the win a nc in the next two years.

Good blog Tony, I like to poke a little fun at you because you have the best job in the world, but I respect your abilities. My take on UGA, very talented and gaining experence, the jury is still out on how this team will perform. The O line should be very good and continue to improve with each practice. Cox will be the starting QB, but don’t be suprised if Murray takes over the number two spot in August. The kid is lighting up scrimmages now, so it won’t be long. I see King as starter with Samuel, Jackson, and Thomas getting reps. That could change too according to how Samuel progresses. Remember folks, Samuel just turned eighteen in Feb. UGA has needed a big back since Lumpkin graduated. Fullback will be a strong point, as will TE when Figgins returns. Orson Charles may get a lot of PT. Wrs are big and talented, and numerous. Marlon Brown will be a stud and should be playing a lot by mid-season. The defense will improve with the return of Owens. He and Atkins may be the best pair of DTs in the SEC. DE is up in the air, but LB is strong. Washimgton will be back to add depth and serve as a run stopper in the middle. Curran and Gamble are very athletic ball hawks. DB will be stronger than you think, some of the young guys are going to push for playing time. UGA may suprise some people this year.

By the way – I thought my point about Auburn/UGA was accurate. I mentioned too many bizarre games between these two teams where the obvious favorite got beat. And with the game in Athens this year – I put the game 50/50.

UGA/Auburn is one of my favorite SEC games – very hard hitting game – both teams really get after it. And Bama can guage what Auburn has left in the tank this time of year.

My other SEC favorite games are basically any combination of Bama/Auburn/LSU/Florida/Tennessee/UGA teams playing against each other.

But year in and year out – the best permanent opponent games you have to watch are:
Bama/TN
Bama/LSU
Bama/AUB
AUB/UGA
AUB/LSU
LSU/Florida
Florida/TN
Florida/UGA
UGA/TN

By the way – how many of the top SEC teams does UGA have a winning record against?
Bama?……Nope
Auburn?….Nope
LSU?…….Nope
Tennessee?…..Nope
Florida?…..YES!!! – but give Urban 8 more years and it will be tied.

ROLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL TIDE, OTTO, ROLLLLLLLLLLLLLL TIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bama Stan, you have WAT too much time on your hands. However, you do not seem to know UGA football very well. Stick with your elephants….no on is interested on your take on the Dawgs this fall. UGA ” having problems breaking into elite group”?….What an assanine statement. We finished #2 in the final rankings 2 years ago!!! “Blown out one or two times a year”? Once, last year by UF, but it was closer than the score. The Bama game was a tale of 2 halves, as we dominated the Elephants in the 2nd half. Let me tell you about breaking in a new QB…it is a lot easier when you have the nation’s best coming to play for you and they can learn the offense while biding their time for a year or two…So go back to Tusky and worry about your own team that has a LOT more holes to fill than the Dawgs.

Hey Jeff look at the numbers again? UGA, UF and LSU all have 48 SEC wins from 2001-2008 (the Richt years) UF has 19 SEC losses UGA 20 and LSU 21. UGA has played in one more SEC title game than FL during this period. The 2003 loss to eventual NC LSU is the only difference in their conference records. LSU has played in 4 SEC title games during that period which gives them one more SEC game played than UGA. If you take out SEC Championship games UF and UGA are tied and LSU would be one game behind.

Florida?…No 2-6

yankeedawg, you beat me to the UTAH thing. It really is lunacy for a fan of team that embarrassed themselves, and the Conference, like they did, to start talking smack when we’re closer to past January than to next September. Kinda reminds me of Florida the year they got murdered by Nebraska for the NC and never missed a beat when it came to arrogance and smugness. Fact is we’ll see soon enough how the season goes. I like our chances against anybody, and always will.

BAMA STAN,
Your team’s victory between the hedges was not the result of “two quick years” of a Saban turnaround. An important part of that victory goes back to recruiting and developing talent in the Shula era. Saban could not have won that game without Shula’s kids! Look, I agree that Saban is a better coach than Shula. But give Shula credit for bringing in some talent. You’re making it sound like Saban inherited straw and turned it into gold. In reality, Saban’s *first* season at Bama was a disappointment. The best players from Shula’s last year came back with more experience, so they should have finished with a better record.

Bama stan, for someone who thinks he knows alot about SEC football and especailly UGA, you are a total idiot. A typical Bama fan that thinks one good season and Bama is suddenly a title contender. You think UGA was soft and not talented last year compared to Bama. Try losing your top three left tackles on offense, and 2 of your top 3 defensive tackles, and see where the mighty tide would have finished. Oh, I forgot, Bama loses it’s best offensive tackle for the Sugar Bowl and they get their asses handed to them by an average Utah team. U are so full of yourself as are all idiot Bama fans.If i’m not mistaken UGA had beaten the mighty tide the last 3 times they had played them, and I think they beat Saban (I mean Bear Bryant) last year in Alabama. And you really show your ignorance when you say UGA isn’t good enough to be in the top ten. Try 5 out of the last 7 years idiot. Oh and least we forget, they only finished #2 in 2008. Go to a team’s blog where you can actually brag if you are a Bama fan. Let’s see that would be hard to do, since Auburn has owned you, and LSU has owned you, and UGA has beaten you 3 of the last 4 times, and Tenn. has owned you, and Florida has owned you, lets see, how about going on Miss.State’s blog and brag about your team this decade. OOPS, forgot they have beaten the MIGHTY TIDE 2 of the last 3. Oh well, at least there is Louisiana Monroe, OOPS, forgot they beat your sorry as program last time they played you at your home stadium. One last thing, you completely uninformed IDIOT, UGA has the best record of any SEC team since 2001, not Florida, not LSU, who UGA has owned the last 3 games, not Auburn, who UGA has owned the last 3 years, not Tenn, and certainly not the MIGHTY TIDE. No it’s UGA. Get lost MR.Knowitall, that doesn’t know anything. And to sit there and say Bama has passed UGA in talent, is a total joke.U keep on drinking the SABAN coolaid, but go brag on the only team blog your mighty bama team has dominated this decade, Vandy.

To the point…The UGA O line will be better than in the past few years simply because of experience. The improvement of the O line will be very critical and will partially determine how good we are. The other critical area is the D line. Back to the O line and its improved play…the O line will be responsible for giving a relatively inexperienced QB time to find open receivers, opening running lanes for inexperienced RB’s and in general moving the line of scrimage and gaining first downs. Gaining first downs will help keep the defense on the sideline and more rested. With more rest the D should be able to step up and make plays, make fewer mental mistakes (penalties) and therefore more effective. Now for certain the O line is only one part of the equation. The D line will have to step up just as much as the O line and limit the time the QB has to throw and close running lanes. They will have to do this to limit the exposure of a relatively inexperineced defensive backfield.

Look for UGA passing game to be more effective than the last several years. As talented as Stafford was and still is, Cox should have more time and prove to be effective at picking defenses apart. WR may be the best that UGA has had in sometime.

UGA running game should be about the same. Improved line, with less talent at RB.

Overall UGA offense should improve with a healthy and experienced O line.

UGA should be improved over the 08 team. What Cox lacks in talent he will make up for in leadership. The O will be improved and the D should be about the same or better.

I will cover the D in more depth as blogs are appropriate.

a BAD SIGN of not properly training, is injuries, train hard, play harder. There is no reason UGA shouldn’t be a top 5 team this year. Fla has become more psychological than anything. Tebow is a one man show, and if you are in the SEC, and can’t stop one man, then you don’t need to be playing on the 1st of Jan!

Georgia will be much better this year because they will be more dominant along the line of scrimmage. Depth, size talent. The backs will be used differently and passing game will be more diverse. They will wear teams down instead of just out score them. The offense is setting up nicely for Carlton Thomas and Ealy. Look for Samuel and King to fade into solid back ups. This will be a more athletic defence. Asher Allen, Ellerbe will be a distant memories. Justin Houston will be effective early in the season. This will be a special team.

In two years Coach Searles has proven that he is a damn competent coach, especially considering what cards he has been dealt during the past two seasons. Probably the best of Richt’s entire staff.

Its about time for MARTINEZ to step up and show what he’s got, if anything. If Martinez doesn’t prove himself this year, my feeling is, he is gone at the end of the season, no matter if Richt gets on his knees and begs for his retention. The cry from the fans will be too great even for President Adams and his “office manager” athletic director to ignore.

Is all this attention on the OL a misdirection away from the defense? Is “idiot Martinez” still at UGA? Does Martinez continue to go to other schools to watch the offense players? The DAWGS scored over forty points against Tech and lost. I guess my education is just not good enough. The defense was a disaster and now I am reading about the offense. Geez pay me 4 million a year and I could have a 10-3 record with the mighty DAWGS.

I agree that UGA’s OL should be very good this year and it needs to be because they are going to see a lot of blitzing with an unproven running game and QB. Couple that with the fact that Richt decided to retain WIllie Martinez at DC will mean they will probably be playing from behind a lot.

I’d be shocked to see UGA win more than 8 games this coming season and the temperature of Richt’s chair will start going way up.

After reading all these hilarious blogs, it all boils down to this: I said 3 years ago that UGA would NEVER win NC under Richt. It does not matter how many SEC games UGA wins, they will ALWAYS lose the ones they HAVE TO WIN as long as Richt is head coach. You say UGA has won all those SEC games – let me ask this – HOW MANY TIMES HAVE THEY PLAYED IN THE BCS CHAMPIONSHIP GAME??? Both LSU and Florida are 2-0. Until UGA or Bama or any other SEC team can say that, then there should be no argument which teams are the CLASS of the conference – LSU and FLORIDA are UNQUESTIONABLY the BEST the SEC has to offer. The other 10 teams are nothing more than WANNABE’S
