Updated: Another suitor for the Thrashers?

In response to a television report that once again named a filmmaker as an interested party in purchasing the Thrashers, team president Don Waddell issued the following statement on Friday afternoon. It indicates that another party this week expressed an interest in the Thrashers to keep the team in Atlanta.

Here is the statement:

“Along with all other groups who have expressed an interest in pursuing an ownership opportunity, which has happened as recently as earlier this week, we have said continuously that ‘until an agreement is signed and approved by the board of governors, it’s never too late but they will have to move very quickly and decisively.  Ownership still is committed to selling at a greatly reduced price to anyone committed to Atlanta.’  ”

The potential suitor stepped forward Thursday and would be considered in the preliminary stages of interest. The introduction of the possible suitor to the Spirit may have come from a season-ticket holder. A great deal of work would need to be done, if proven a serious suitor, and time is an issue.

As I reported Friday, negotiations with True North to sell and relocate the Thrashers to Winnipeg continue, but a deal is not done. Should it be completed, it won’t be done before Tuesday following the Memorial Day weekend.

@G52PIM228 “What does PIM stand for?” Well, doesn’t that just say it all? What a doorknob!!

You trash everyone one on here that is a supporter of Winnipeg getting a team. I can promise you this…..95% (or higher) of anyone that’s posted on this sight AND supported the move to Winnipeg, knew exactly what PIM means. Here you’re the guy actually using it, and you have no idea. What a friggin’ loser!!

I’d like to debate this with you further, but that’s like having a gun fight with an unarmed man. You have no idea, have never had any idea, and will likely never ever have any idea what being a hockey fan is all about.

You’re a little man, with little man syndrom……we eat guys like your for breadfast. You can come back at me all you like……but know this, I am not going to waste my time coming back to this sight to see if you got the message or not. I KNOW you got the message……little man!!!

Winnipeg = Poverty

Speaking of the Sportsnet website this was posted by a Canadian who does business and travels to Winnipeg. The city of Winnipeg has poverty, native (Indian) gangs, bad crime rate, cold winters the place is like the Trailer Park Boys. I give this really dumb move by the NHL 5 full seasons at the most and this franchise will be on the move again, especially if the NHL salary cap goes to $62 or $63 million this year and continues to rise.Winnipeg is basically a place with very few people and even less immigration to increase those low numbers.

IF, and I mean IF, Atlanta wants to be a hockey city, there needs to be an effort to somehow make hockey what baseball is, what basketball is, what football is here. The city and outside the city needs to bring ice rinks into fruition. No, we aren’t going to find ice outside EVEN in Winter. Atlanta needs to do its part in order to make hockey accessible, and it has failed gracefully in my opinion. ATLANTA, do what is needed to make hockey a sport HERE!

I wrote this for the last few days…CViv keeps saying these things about unknown potential local buyers…but all the other headlines in this city and around N.A. have the complete opposite…this sale is near complete with Winnipeg. So how long are you dolts going to hang on to the word of a guy who has demonstrated he has no insidetrack, that TV stations have interview with owners and they all agree this sale is all but done. Yet CViv wants to keep stringing you along like he’s privy to some sort of surprise buyer. He’s not, this deal is as good as done as is HIS career writing for the the Thrashers. Say goodbye, CViv, and meanwhile those who don’t drink your kool-aid and are true hockey game see right thru you and your attempt to keep yourself in the loop when you’re so far out of it you should probably go pay the $50 bucks for a hot dog vending machine and sell them and brats. You’re as much a hockey expert as I am an autonechanic! Good luck, break out the mustard and relish. You’re a yes man for the ASG and you wonder why no one here

@ Winnipeg = Poverty …so you’re going to try to tell me that Atlanta has no gangs, no “bad” crime (must just have that good crime they’re always talking about, huh??), and no poverty.

I’ll venture out on a limb on this one……you’ve got 5 times the poverty that we do. You’ve got 5 times the crimes committed that we do. You’ve got 10 or 15 times the trailor park inhabitants that we do, and we’ve got twice the immigration that you do.

Yep, you got warmer weather. 1 outta 5 or 6 ain’t bad, I guess. By the way, you’ve also lost twice as many NHL teams as Winnipeg has!!!!

I am never too sure why people open up their mouths and just say stuff that they “wish” was true. I think it’s a lack of confidence sort to thing.

Know this, the NHL will last a lot longer in Winnipeg that it did in Atlanta………either time. That’s just a “no brainer”. If you don’t believe me, ask Mr. “PIM”. He’s quite the knowledeable hockey guy.

In what other sport would a city with a metro area of 5.5 million+ people like Atlanta lose two teams in the best league on the planet to two cities with a combined population that is much less than 50% of said city?(Calgary 1.2 million now;maybe 600,000 in 1980 when Flames left;Winnipeg 750,000 now) Great for Winnipeg and its fans but looks pretty bad on NHL as well as Atlanta and its corprate community.

This is it in a nut shell…Atlanta Flames left because of the owner wanting to move. Atlanta Thrashers are moving because the owners never wanting them in the first place.
I hope the Winnapeg (insert name) do well with the core players that have signed. I will check box scores and standings.
I hope we get a team back one day with one owner that cares and Don Wadell finds employment elsewhere. I apologize for the rude insensitive remarks made by all. The stuff that has been spewed on these blogs in inexcusible. God Bless All.

So for all you who think the ASG is the devil…. best comment yet!

“I can’t really comment on where we stand,” Seydel said. “I can just say that I’m proud of my partners for working hard to keep the Thrashers and paying a lot of money, all of us, to keep the team in town for longer than anybody else has thus far.

“Unfortunately, there are not enough of us that are passionate at this point in time to keep the team, to replenish what we need to have done.”

So in other words….

If it wasn’t for ASG the Thrashers would have left Atlanta a long time ago.

Here is the problem with the NHL business model. Owners who don’t care (ASG) are allowed to sell there product and move it elsewhere. Billionaires will pay anything to have a toy and in this case the ASG gets rewarded because the NHL sits by and allows it to happen. What other business model does this work in.

My best friend is worth over 500 million dollars and i’ve asked him to please take the time to look at the Thrashers deal. His comment to me….”it loses 20 million a year. It’s true, that’s why we can’t find a buyer in Atlanta, ASG has so devalued the product. All along the NHL sits by and watches it happen and furthermore allows it to happen.

If owners had a responsibility to the NHL and the fans it would be different.

The NHL should require one of 2 thinks from owners in this situation. Sell the team to someone who will keep it local or file bankruptcy, owners don’t get a penny, then sell the franchise off to the highest bidder.

If True North wants a hockey team they should have to keep it in Atlanta. The NHL should decide what cities they want to be in. What has taken place here has devalued the sport to national advertisers and to the public.

The NHL and Bettman has not given enough time to truly find someone who could keep the team here in Atlanta. Other than a billionaire, it takes time to put a finacial package together. It can’t be done in 2 weeks. THe NHL and Bettman are wrong by not staying the course for at least one more year.

NHL should tell True North the team is here in Atlanta, if you want an NHL team you must keep this one here.

In closing, Winnipeg may be deserving of a team but give them an expansion team. NHL take the 90 million it’s much more than the 60 million you are getting.

No Bbbb…. I own a website with 2 others, that’s been around now for 4 years. Our stories are picked up by Sporting News, Chicago Sun-Times and most of us are former writers for TSN. What I sense is you got a bit of a nerve touched and now it irks you. Most of my co-writer’s, some of us from Emerson College, other’s from Syracuse, and a lot from the major cities see Atlanta and pity you. I’m from Boston, you know, were the Bruins are heading to the Cup, unlike the Thrashers who are moving (I”ve actualy got a cup older than this franchise)
What is it you have, a bunch of people who sit here and cry and speculate that there will be some 11th hour herics, which won’t happen. But you will put all your fate in a blogger who at best will probaby either be job hunting or he can apply to empty our trash barrels at our home offices in Manhattan!!! You know where that is right?

All this talk about a potential white knight entering the picture is just a facade. It’s not real. Do you really think the Atlanta Spirit will give a “discount” to someone who will keep the team in Atlanta? Why would any sane businessman want to keep the Thrashers at the Philips Arena? I don’t know of any other place where they have competing concession stands right next door and they actually built and entrance so that fans can enter Philips arena from the food court of the CNN center. So they lose revenue from that. They probably also lose revenue on Parking. Parking at the Philips arena is atrocious and it feels so ghetto. They lose money from not having parking revenue. Their hockey store sucks, and they don’t sell any autographed jerseys or memorabilia. Then you have the mayor of Atlanta pretty much giving you the finger and telling you that nobody cares if the team you want to buy leaves town. If I had a billion dollars and I was given the opportunity to buy the Thrashers, the first thing I’d do is break the lease from Philips Arena and move the Thrashers outside of Atlanta. Maybe to Duluth or Marietta, or wherever Hockey would actually be appreciated. The Thrashers lose 20M/yr because of poor management and crappy ownership. You could put a mediocre product like that on the ice and stay 20M below the salary cap and average 12,000-14,000 fans per game and still generate a profit. Chicago did it for years until Bill Wirtz died. So how come the geniuses at ASG can’t turn a profit? They’re too busy filing lawsuits against their own partners and their own attorneys. They’ve made Atlanta a laughing stock of the entire NHL.
