It will be a quiet holiday weekend on Thrashers front

Just a quick post before the Memorial Day weekend officially begins. I can tell you that nothing will be resolved on the Thrashers ownership front until at least Tuesday.

I know that’s little news, but the deal continues to be worked on and the holiday weekend will slow the process.  I wanted to you have the up-to-date information.

I hope you all have a happy and safe holiday weekend. Remember what we celebrate and who we honor on Monday.

Interesting story today in AJC about the economy affecting sports venues around town…..certainly this factor for past three years deserved better attentionj from NHL commissioner as he listened to the sadsack ASG whine there way towards Winnepeg. Atlanta is getting screwed.

I wonder how many people actually believe ASG has only been talking to TNSE for ten days, yet a deal is “80% done” according to Gearon? I’ve never seen a group of owners so gleeful to send an asset away in my life.

As a former Winnipegger who currently resides in Calgary, I have to tell you that I’m feeling for you guys in Atlanta.

I was living in Winnipeg when we lost the team to Phoenix and it really sucked… Although the people are very excited about a possible return, it’s tough times for dedicated Hockey fans in Atlanta.

I know it doesn’t make things any easier on you folks, but no matter where the Thrashers end up, Winnipeg or not, here’s hoping that you don’t have to wait 15 years like Winnipeg has for a possible return of a NHL team…

After all, we Hockey fans have to stick together…

The Top 10 Things A$G Has Done for Atlanta Thrashers Fans:

10. Committed to a winning 5 year (x2) plan
9. Promoted and encouraged youth hockey
8. Ensured there was an effective and comprehensive marketing strategy
7. Educated non-hockey fans about hockey
6. Invested in and maintained a world class sporting facility
5. Hired and retainied the very best coaches and staff
4. Never traded away talent for washed-up has-beens
3. Consistently invested in marquee free agents
2. Retained marquee players and built team chemistry through player retention
1b. Were always truthful with and appreciated their fans
1a. Retained and promoted Don Waddell

With that top 10+ list, there is no justification for why fans stopped coming the last several years.

Just to let you die hard Thrasher fans know that we feel for you. Betman did the same to us in Winnipeg when we lost our team to Phoenix. We have over 30,000 people protest and raised tens of millions dollars ourself, that fell on deaf ears(betman). It amazes me how he is protecting Phoenix and throwing in the towel for the Thrashers. On a buisness point this makes no sense at all after reviewing all the numbers.

It’s like the ASG has decided to make this as horrible and painful as they possibly can for Atlanta fans. They could just come clean and announce the sale – but no – lets put off the inevitable for a couple weeks to make the fans suffer just a little bit more. What the hell??!!! Gary Bettman, True North whatever group and the Atlanta Spirit Group can all go to hell. Seriously. Thanks for nothing.

Hey Eileen kids wouldn’t be sad if their parents actually supported the team and took them. If you guys care about hockey as much as you claim to then why have you lost 2 teams? Why is your attendance so terrible? Why do only 6000 fans on average in a city of over 5 million tune in to watch hockey on television? Atlanta is a joke when it comes to hockey and you guys have nobody to blame but yourselves. Try to point the fingers at the owners but what it comes down to is that people in Atlanta didn’t support yet another team and now you’ve lost another and I hope the NHL never gives you guys a 3rd chance because we know you’ll just lose that team to Canada as well.

Hopefully the kids will continue to stick with the sport and continue to look up to their Hockey heros… After all, the longer the child stays in a sport, the more likelihood that they’ll be involved one way or another for the rest of their lives… Be it Player, Coach, etc…

i’ve said it before and I will say it again, that the average Winnipegger (me, being one of them) feels bad for the real and true Thrasher fans. Your should not lose your team like this, if anything it is Phoenix that should have. Bettman threw you under the bus, just like he did to us 15 years ago. I am quite sure you will get another team someday and will make it work. We, here in Winnipeg, are anxious to get this going. We will make this a huge success, the city is buzzing on anticipation, and you will see a mass impromptu gatheirng at Portage and Main when this is actually announced. A Facebook page has over 25,000 people committing to pouring onto the intersection after the announcement is made. Hockey is God here.

Krust

Just think, we all think Bettman is lying when he says there is no deal yet and there may never be.
When I say all I mean Atlanta fans and Winnipeg fans. But really what is the hold up anyway. I am going to speculate because thats what we do here. Could it be that NHL is finding out the ASG has mis-managed the Thrashers and hawks (who cares about the Hawks). Or the Lawyers can’t find a way around the NHL by laws on relocation of a franchise. Just speculation. Everyone call Bettman for what it is worth. It is also in Atlanta fans favor for this thing to go on as long as it can. We are almost three weeks into this. An just think how the spirit 8 years ago struck a deal in just a few days to sweep the franchises right out from under McDavid.

BobM52

May 27th, 2011

@ Krust

The only problems with your theories is that:

1) The NHL and Bettman could care less if the Thrashers were mis-managed. All they care about is finding someone to buy the team.

2) NHL By-Laws don’t matter. They’re just “guidelines” about re-location. The NHL can change them any time they want as long as the BOG agrees.

Clearly, “Real Hockey Fan” believes Gearon has been in negotiations with TNSE for only 10 days, and everything about this deal is on the up and up.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but everything about this deal is shadier than a national forest.

It’s actually quite amusing how someone can come here and try to throw barbs at people, without having ever known I’ve been a hockey fan since 1983, and have supported this team since inception.

Fan support was never a problem when the Flames left, and fan support is only being poised as an excuse now. The problem now is an ownership so inept, they can’t even Baltimore Colts us correctly.

This team would not survive in Winnipeg under these owners, and with D-Wad as president.

Yes, Atlanta in the new millenium drew more fans than Winnipeg in the 1980’s. But bear in mind, arenas were smaller back then. Boston, Buffalo, Chicago, LA, Montreal, NJ, Philly, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Toronto, Vancouver, Washington, to name a few are all playing in larger arenas today than in 1990. Winnipeg will also be playing in a larger arena than what it was back then. NHL attendance on average has gotten bigger and bigger every year, starting from around 14 thousand in 1990 to 15 thousand in ‘95 to 16 thousand in ‘97 when most of the new arenas were done being built and now it averages 17 thousand league wide this year. So to compare any team’s attendance today to something back then is apples to oranges.

This will give the trolls from Winnipeg other things to do…perhaps they can go to the Joplin, MO newspaper blog site and make fun of them for being homeless. Perhaps a Rio newspaper to rag on the poor living in favellas….

So OHL, what you are saying is that if Winnipeg sells out (with their max capacity of 15,500) they will do no better than the teams in 1996? Yah, good luck with that, eh.

And RHF, I have been to Winnipeg. The only thing that town has going for it is hockey in the next couple of months and the brunch at the Fort Garry Hotel. Otherwise, it’s like the Canadian version of DesMoines, Iowa only colder (apologies to anyone from DesMoines).

I said this last night on CViv’s last post, that it’s nothing more than a continuous regurgitation of all the other’s..However, Michael Gearon said yesterday, they’re 80% done with this deal. So what it’s a holiday weekend, so what CViv won’t go out on a limb and tell you all it’s over. Read the Fox Atlanta interview where Gearon also said, there’s no chance this team stays here, they’ll be moving and the deal with Winnipeg is the deal they’re going with. I realize this blogger is more content with pumping sunshine up your butt, and why is that? Because he’s reading into your comments like most of us that are realists, that you think there’s still an 11th hour hero that will swoop in and save the day. Not going to happen.
And just so you know, it won’t be ASG making the official announcement, it will be the league who does so, just like they have in the past. Bettman won’t move off his stance until he is faxed the completed deal. Why would ASG come out with a press conference in the first place? You’ve burned them in effigy, they get it, they’ll get thier payoff, try to recover the millions poured down the drain in this, the second failed attempt to give Atlanta a hockey team and off into the sunset the Thrashers will go.
And btw, Mr. Bill, don’t forget I took you up on that $1,000 bet last night they stay another season and I raised you $5K they don’t and I ony take cash, just let me know where to pick up the dough. But you’ll be just like the rest here, a lot of hot air, with nothing to back up your claims but the continued hope the Fairy Godmother will wave her wand and make it all go away. Sorry dopes, you’ve been strung along by a guy who is in his free time sending out resumes and merely copy/pasting the same thing over and over. Someone here asked CViv to go to Thrasher HQ and get some hard facts, well he didn’t but FOX did. This guy is a lightweight.

Atlanta’s crime ratee is really under control. Last weekend, 4 shot in Grant Park, one infant shot. Last night police officers were ambushed when someone shot 11 rounds at them in front of QT gas station. That’s just 3 incidents since Sat. I’m mentioning, but no all of them, what’s the shooting headlines like in Winnipeg for that timeframe you moron?
Gangs shooting up a frickin funeral last month where they were burying another gang victim. You can’t even sit at a light after dark without being approached by scumbags who harrass you, try to gain entry to your vehicle or taunt you while you wait for the green.
