Spirit, True North have begun talks

Sorry folks. Got so caught up in my news story about Atlanta Spirit and True North negotiating about a possible sale that I didn’t give you a place to comment.

Here is the start of the story, if you are late to the news.

The Atlanta Spirit are in negotiations with True North Sports and Entertainment on the sale of the Thrashers, which would result in relocation to Winnipeg, according to a person familiar with the NHL’s sale process.

A deal has not been completed and the parties have not entered into an exclusive negotiating agreement. It is also not known how long the two sides have been negotiating. However, the fact that talks are on-going could mean the Thrashers would relocate to Manitoba perhaps as soon as next season.

“I have never confirmed nor denied specific parties we have been talking to in regards to a possible sale of the Thrashers,” Atlanta Spirit co-owner Bruce Levenson told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Monday.

Typically, confidentiality agreements are signed between parties in negotiations which would prohibit Atlanta Spirit ownership from identifying suitors

NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly, reached via e-mail, said there was “nothing I’m prepared to say at this point.” A True North Sports and Entertainment spokesperson had no comment.

The rest of the story is HERE.

Also, here is what Jeff Schultz had to say about the news.

Knew it…Atlanta will bring TWO offspring to Western Canada!! Atlanta Spirit you suck, just watch the fans in Winnipeg enjoy winning playoff hockey that you never brought to us. Hell of a way to finally get Don Waddell out of Atlanta!!

Hockey in Atlanta is a joke! Sports in Atlanta is a joke! Atlanta is not really a sports town at all. Hawks, Braves, and Falcons games are always ghost towns. The Braves made the playoffs for 18 straight years or so, yet everytime I turn on TBS I see an empty Turner Field. The problem is Bettman is dumb enough to think hockey will become football. It never will! Hockey only works in Canadian cities and Detroit! While they are at it, the NHL should also take Florida, Tampa, Carolina, Phoenix, Anahiem, San Jose, and Nashville’s teams away! It has always puzzled me why Miami and Phoenix have teams, but Milwaukee and Seattle do not!

I hear that former LSU basketball player Bernard Woodside leads a group that has an all cash offer on the table for 500M for the hawks and thrashers. They have committed to keeping them in Atlanta as Woodside has family and business ties to Atlanta area. Woodside heads a hedge fund and swiss asset management firm.

If they want to leave then get the hell out of town. IF they want to stay then they need to win the Stanley Cup or might as well leave. Any questions?

Winnipeg is the ugliest, coldest, lonliest city on the planet. I dont wish that on any hockey player.

I hate to see them go–turns out the ASG is also in talks to sell the Hawks. I will still root for the Thrashers in Winnipeg if they go there. I fear if we loose the Thrashers though, (after already loosing the Flames), we will never get another NHL team here. That said, if they do leave, can we get the Knights back?

Everyone should go listen to this interview with Dan Bouchard the former Atlanta Flame. He gives a Canadian radio station the low down on the Flames leaving Atlanta and the Atlanta Spirit.

Atlanta is a big sports town – its big into SEC/ACC football. Nothing else matters.
