Ramsay on ’strange’ return to Buffalo

Craig Ramsay, who spent his entire NHL playing career with the Sabres, on returning to Buffalo for Wednesday’s game. His debut in the city as head coach of the Thrashers comes one day after the organization introduced new owner Terry Pegula. The owner, a long-time Sabres season-ticket holder, even cried when mentioning players of the past – including Gilbert Perreault.

“It’s strange,” Ramsay said. “Every time I come in here it’s a bit awkward. I know so many people who are still here – in great positions and good people. I’ve coached a couple of playoff rounds against them. It seems like every time I come here there is something special going on. You would think you’d get past it. You never really get past it because this is some place I was for 22 years. I have a job to do and it’s to get my team ready to go and play their best.”

I just posted this over on Rawhide’s blog. Sheesh….

Could it possibly happen any other way for us? We get to go to Buffalo and face them the day after their new owner takes over and incites the whole city into a delirium. Tied in points, the Sabres with two games in hand. I wouldn’t exactly expect a letdown for the Sabres tonight. Unless they are all hung over……

Incidentally, I’ve cried over some of our past players too. But, not for the same reasons……

It all starts tonight! We will look back on this date and say this was when the team started their HOT streak that took them into the playoffs!

Flames, Hot streak ? How about dead streak to the celler of the Eastern confrence, that is more like it. I hope Ramsey stays in Buffalo, we need a real professional coach, one who can control the team and not guys like Ramsey & Anderson… Enough is enough !

Actually, I should be thanking the Thrashers.

Everytime I find myself wanting to go to a game (like this weekend) – I talk myself into waiting to see if they play their next game like they deserve my money.

Tonight’s (lack of) effort will keep an extra hundred dollars in my pocket.

I will not be attending either. After their recent play, I am not going to pay to see this joke team lose and lose again. Boycott the game, why go ? After this chock job tonight, I have had it.
Ramsey needs to go and go now, Dudley as well, it’s over. The team will be moved and it will be over…. Finally !

why is it over now? this team is in quit mode, they’ve lost to the worst teams in hockey, nearly 20 games in a row have been bad, I don’t see the big surprise and you can’t fire everyone, players don’t want to go to Winnipeg, this whole situation sucks. Rammer actually showed some rare emotion last night, but it’s not enough and expecting to win with this roster is absurd. I’m not an armchair GM, but I don’t see how Stapleton can go the entire year without getting another point and still play.
Stuart is a positive even though Eliot can’t figure out that we have two with the name. One hustles, fights, plays hard and the other is black according to the media who felt that was significant.

It’s frustrating that Eager who is an NHL caliber player was given away with no return. Macahachahek or however you spell his name blows, another AHL talented player with zero grit. Stapleton wins a few faceoffs, nothing else, mighty mouse, he managed to score a shootout goal and that somehow earned him a permanent roster spot. Anthony Stewart is a fraud, claiming he was a Kieth Tkachuk type of player, he gets a job and plays like Stapleton only he scores once in a while and shows up on the stats sheet. How long will it be until Mark Stuart and Blake Wheeler miss Boston, they see Hainsey and Oduya give as little effort as possible, Bogosian at times looks like he is on a personal mission to help us lose, Pavelec is like a race car with a blown engine, only our pit crew leaves him out there to “race”.

Thor got praised last night..I was wondering how a big guy like that has no sack. When it gets tough this team accepts it and rolls over. Our extremely passive coach whispers, our GM doesn’t panic, but he doesn’t do anything else either, I’m not an expert, but c’mon..we had a legit chance with a great start..but more than 2 months have went by and this team has only played a few ‘good’ games during that entire time, it’s like when they have a decent “effort” it’s worth praise. That’s unacceptable, what proof did Dudley need to make a major move, I am elated we got rid of a gutless Peverley, but we still have plenty of similar players, our minor leaguers stink, you’d think players on the fringe would at least play hard, playing hard should be the least of our concerns at this point if this team had it in them to make the playoffs. Even my favorite player in Boulton sums this team up, he let up on a yielding player in his fight, if the skate had been on the other foot, that guy would have popped him even if he was in a vulnerable position, why does our entire team all want the lady byng. I’m sick of this “nice guy Ramsay” crap. Other teams like playing us because they know we aren’t going to play rough or even hit them. They are p*ussies*.

Since our fate has been sealed, it is time to become a “seller”. If we are lucky, someone will pick up some of our “dead wood” for a prospect or a pick, Candidates: Antropov, Bergfors, Johnny O., Thorburn, Boulton, Stewart. Sopel may have some value for a team in need of a solid defenseman. Sad ending. Throw Clueless Craig into any deal.

The threat from Gearon that the team will go to Canada is an idle one now. I’ve been a fan since day one and a season ticket holder (1/2 season) but will not renew until this team starts winning. I don’t even feel like going to the remaining games that I have paid tickets for. I’m sick of watching Stapleton stumble around out there and as much as I think little Tobey is a great player his passes are too soft (he cost us a goal last night). The team needs some work and an overhaul but the long term problem has been the ownership. I’m envious of Buffalo and their new owner. That’s what we need.

Craig Ramsay was the best defensive forward ever to play for the Sabres. If they were down to 5 on 3 or 4 on 3 Ramsay (L wing) would be the forward out there not a centerman. If he had the puck in his skates along the boards it did not come out until he wanted it to. He could score as well. He had at least two 20 goal seasons. Not bad for a forward not on the first powerplay unit.

Worst mistake you could make is to not buy tickets now.Look at the Devils…how many years did their fans suffer? Gretzky once called them a “Mickey Mouse franchise!”

Many years later they have 3 Stanley Cups,a new arena and strong ownership….

Actually, Ramsay had 8 straight 20 goal seasons. But he still isn’t very good at motivating his players apparently. They sure as hell don’t look like ol’ #10 out there in his hey day.

So Duds is gonna trade a D man for some scoring help..thank goodness he did not listen to the morons who wanted Zherdev..Z never gives a full effort and belongs as far away from north american hockey as possible. We need good players, I don’t care if they are purple, that was another brilliant move by this team, “get black players to relate to a black audience that doesn’t go to hockey games”, the entire team should have never been built in Atlanta, we wouldn’t even be in this boat if it were built in Gwinnett where hockey is alive and well. Hockey is for everyone, those ads are insulting.

As long as we don’t bring back Rumun Ndur, I’m content with the black players we have and I like the Russian kid Burmy, the 3,000 year old Kozlov experiment lasted a few seasons too long though, but overall I liked him too. I also don’t think people in the media are capable of even using a term that would better describe some of our “black” players because they aren’t exactly black considering..ahem.. some of them have a white parent..but what do I know? To the media they’re black. Oh well.

I agree this roster needs to be exploded, Dudley is at least trying to correct a glaring problem here, GRIT and effort. So far he is weeding out soft players who have effort issues. Dawes was given numerous chances to stick and for a smaller guy he refused to play physical, Sopel will be a healthy scratch in Montreal in case of inuries, a real class act but we knew he’d be gone. If we want a scoroer we are gonna have give something up and we don’t have much anyone would want as far as our obvious dead weight goes. Would you trade for Stapleton ? Other teams probably aren’t exactly knocking down our door for his services, especially this time of year when the games get rougher and players like mighty mouse hide in the corner. squeeeeeeeeek !!1

No way to say this without being offensive – your franchise is a joke. The biggest disgrace in NHL history was moving teams like Quebec, Winnipeg, Hartford ,and Minnesota to southern cities with absolute crap hockey markets. Hopefully Bettman and crew will start to reverse the trend – starting with the weakest link – Atlanta (although Florida is a real close second in my mind). Like it or not, the best thing for the NHL and hockey fans is to move that laughingstock of a team back somewhere in Canada.
