Thrashers name three alternate captains

As I tweeted earlier this afternoon Nik Antropov, Andrew Ladd and Johnny Oduya were named alternate captains by head coach Craig Ramsay Wednesday. (Note: If you haven’t already, you should follow me on twitter so you can get the breaking news before I drive 50 minutes home from practice and can post a full blog).

Ramsay reiterated what he told me Tuesday that there will not be a captain to start the season and several players will get a chance to wear the ‘A’.

Here is what he said about the decision.

“We are going to use other people as well,” Ramsay said. “If you look at our team, a veteran player like Freddy Modin, a guy like Brent Sopel who has been around, I think those guys there were already assistants. They are great people and they are going to be a big part of our dressing room. I think Johnny Oduya has been great. So has Andrew Ladd. I think Nik as a returning player, earned that opportunity with a strong year last year. He’s a big impressive guy and I think they are people we can look at as leaders. We are definitely going to have other people take a crack at it. We want to make sure on this team, it’s team first and everyone has to be a leader. Beyond that, as far as I’m concerned, they have to be followers. Somebody is leading and somebody is putting themselves on the line even if it’s one good shift. You have to follow it with your good shift and your good effort. We need the leaders to take charge and show the way, but we need people ready to follow in their footsteps and play hard. I think we have those people, but there is always that learning curve.”

What do you think about the choices? Anybody else you’d like to see get a chance?

Not crying that Ron (who me? in the minus?) Hainsey didn’t get it. Wish he’d step up and play the game he’s capable of playing.

I fully expect that when he’s healthy and reactivated, Slater will get an A …

Ladd is the natural captain on this club, except for that pesky one year deal. I am telling you, you guys are going to love Ladd, he is an honest balls to the wall hockey player and gives his all every shift. I bet he’s the guy they’re all hoping steps up and takes the C . . .if not it’s Antropov’s

Yeah I agree with you Joe. I see Ladd stepping up and eventually being named the captain. He seems to have that “it” factor that you want in a captain.

I actually hope we don’t have a C this year, I think 3 A’s are better. Why? Look at when Kovy was C. Everyone looked up to him and used him as an excuse for not working hard. Three A’s are better because EVERYONE as a TEAM must work together.

Really like the choices from Ramsay.

Drop the puck.

“If Ramsay gave C to Hainsey he’d be dumb as a sack of hummers.”

Looks like good choices for the “A” to me.

Chris: Aren’t there usually 4 though? Will they alternate a fourth “A”?

I’ve read two of your posts and am appalled at your professionalism. Blog/tweet or full blown article, no one cares about your 50-minute drive or the fact that your blog post will be short because you’ve been inundated with your season opening story. Whaaaaa! You chose to write as a PROFESSION. Now step up and deliver. It’s really a shame that your online stuff isn’t edited by an EDITOR, because I think your boss would really let you have it. Grow up, be a reporter, get the job done and don’t give excuses as to why you did/did not deliver the goods. End of story.
