Updated: Pettersson among four released by Thrashers

The Thrashers trimmed their roster by four players following Monday’s practice as forwards Fredrik Pettersson and Patrick Rissmiller and defensemen Arturs Kulda and Andrey Zubarev were released.

Pettersson, Kulda and Zubarev can be sent to AHL Chicago without go through waivers. Rissmiller, acquired in the offseason trade with the New York Rangers for Todd White, will make $1 million next season even if he plays in the AHL.

The moves trim the roster to 25 players but that includes prospect Andrew Kozek who is recovering from surgery. Once a move is made with Kozek, the Thrashers need only trim one more player by the 3 p.m. Wednesday deadline to get to a maximum of  23 players. They could trim another to get down to 22, which would give them one extra forward and one extra defenseman. However with Jim Slater currently unable to participate in all drills as he battles a wrist injury he figures to be the second extra forward if not placed on injured reserve.

The final spot likely comes down to one blueliner – with the remaining players fighting for the spot being Boris Valabik and Freddy Meyer. Valabik the former 10th overall draft pick of the Thrashers, played in just one exhibition game. Meyer played in four exhibition games with two goals and a plus-4 rating. Each player would have to clear waivers if released before they could go to AHL.

It appears that Alexander Burmistrov, the team’s first-round pick in this year’s draft, will get at least a 10-game look. Burmistrov can be sent to juniors at any time, but if it’s after 10 games the clock starts on a pro contract. It also appears the Anthony Stewart has earned an initial spot on the team. Stewart, a former first-round pick of Florida, spent all last season in the AHL. Nigel Dawes, signed as a free-agent late in the offseason, is still on the roster after scoring two preseason goals.

The roster currently looks like this:

Forwards (14): Nik Antropov, Niclas Bergfors, Eric Boulton, Alexander Burmistrov, Nigel Dawes, Ben Eager, Evander Kane, Andrew Ladd, Bryan Little, Fredrik Modin, Rich Peverley, Jim Slater, Anthony Stewart, Chris Thorburn

Defensemen (8): Zach Bogosian, Dustin Byfuglien, Tobias Enstrom, Ron Hainsey, Johnny Oduya, Brent Sopel, Meyer and Valabik

Goaltenders (2): Chris Mason, Ondrej Pavelec

Dustin Byfuglien, who missed several practices and did not appear in the final two preseason games, skated in Monday’s practice. He reported feeling no ill effects of the ankle injury that has hampered him. He was one of several players that had X-rays Monday prior to practice and cuts. Coach Craig Ramsay would not reveal what players also had X-rays. Slater skated, but did not participate in all drills. He went through a rigorous pre-practice workout.

Here are the line combinations from the practice prior to the cuts.

Dawes-Antropov-Modin

Kane-Peverley-Stewart

Ladd-Little-Bergfors

Boulton-Rissmiller-Pettersson

Eager-Burmistrov-Thorburn

The cuts were made following practice and interviews so I will have to wait until Tuesday to find out why Pettersson, who is on a two-way contract, was sent to the AHL. He was impressive during training camp and had a goal and an assist during exhibition games.

Who is your guess for who gets the final spot on defense?

Viv, are they wanting to evaluate Jimmy’s, Buff’s and Antro’s injuries before pulling the trigger on re-assignments?

I know it’s just a practice line but what is the point of playing Dawes with Antro and Modin. We already know Bergy plays well with Antro and the Kaner-Pevs-Stewart line was seemingly a disaster against CLB.

I really, really find it hard to believe they haven’t found any lines with solid chemistry yet…I’m tired of all of these changes to the lines. Find something that works and let those guys gel. I feel like we are witnessing JA’s dart board of random combination.

[...] now and then is for the Thrashers coaching staff to make it’s final roster decisions…something C-Viv reports has not been done as of today. See here in action against the Blue Jackets last Saturday, Alex [...]

True Blue, this will probably continue for as long as it takes to find the combination that works best. It’s a process. But, they’ll get it right. Eventually. And when they come to the realization that the reason our forwards don’t have any space … is because, in part, that Dustin Byfuglien is playing defense.

Any ideas on how Ramsey feels now that the preseason games have been played? Was Bergfors being kept on the lower lines and away from Antropov an indication they may shop him and his low price?

Ya that Dawes-Antro-Modin line doesn’t make sense to me. Little should be in the top two lines.

Bergy-Antro-Petterson
Kane-Little-Peverley
Ladd-Thorburn-Dawes

That’s how I think it should be.

Hopefully the delay in cuts is based on keeping an eye on those cut around the league.

DAMN I was soooooo pumped about this year before a winless pre season, followed by Washington (can you say 6-1 Caps) followed by a ton of road games.

Just DAMN

If Rissmiller gets claimed off waivers, then the Todd White trade to the NY Rangers is “officially” strictly a salary dump move. Yeah, I know. Hardly a newsflash. But, it is a clear example of how to rid yourself of a “milk carton” player. But, what happens when you don’t have a Glen Sather to trade with?

kracker

It was good both ways, Brendan. As you know, Sather got rid of Brashear (who he way-overpaid for) and he got a player he was hoping would gel w/ his old Wild pal Gaborik. We got rid of the ‘injured’ White for the price of buying out Brashear. I say ‘injured’ because the Thrash could not buy out White because he ended the last season not playing because of injury.

I really hope that preseason was just that preseason. We were dead last with one point. I was fired up but the flame is getting weaker. Getting goals is going to be a big issue for this team. I don’t see it happening with the players we have unless someone is going to have a surprising year or we get a solid goal scoring winger from somewhere. Mason will have to win most of these games for us in goal. Also we have big players and tough players I hope the coaches let them play that way.

I’d rather have him there than on someone else’s team (there are no waivers to be cleared).

I frankly don’t understand how he failed to make the team; will have to wait for the interviews on that question.

i like how fans are all over one of the few guys who wanted to play here and who took less money, boulton. seriously talk about a team with no identity, that’s how you get one..by having heart and soul players like boults, that guy deserves an A, not a demotion from a team he has earned the right to play for. we need an enforcer , have any of you looked at the east? wait till boogaard comes rolling into town, you think eager is an enforcer? nope. he rarely even fights heavyweights. we aren’t gonna score goals, i don’t think a 900 year old guerin is gonna help, remember cormier will be back also, we have a glut of 3rd and 4th liners imo. my intital excitement is gone as well, we are a few years away..yet again. i hope this team out works people..we are looking like those florida panthers teams that at least try, but get blown out of the water more times than not. i’m gonna rely on the fact that we may make a move soon or that duds simply knows more than we do.

Petterson goes to Chicago without having to clear waivers, so it’s a smart move. He’ll play there while Burmistrov gets his free 10 game tryout in the pros. After 10 games either Burmistrov is ready to go back to junior, or someone else hasn’t panned out as planned and they bring Petterson back up.

Pettersson released? Why? That makes absolutely no sense at all. That kid outplayed alot of players on this team from the games I watched. I find it also strange that apparently Modin is playing top line minutes. Surely this will change right?

Wow, didn’t see that one coming (Petts demotion), but as someone else said, I doubt it will be long before he’s called up again. The two-way contract was his demise (as Dawes & Modin are on 1-ways), but taking Stewart over Petts just show that they were afraid to not have size for the 4th line. Plus, that Eager-Thorbs-Stewart line gelled very nicely. But if Burmie makes the team, does that mean Lits moves back to wing until his 9-game cup of coffee has been digested, so to speak? I hope Antropov is the one who moves back to RW as we need a strong, skilled player on the off-wing to create. I just hope the hustling, hard-skating Little is our top center.

Kane – Lits – Antro

Modin – Burmy – Dawes

Ladd – Pevs – Bergy

Eager – Thorbs – Stew

Obviously at this point, it is anyone’s guess how the lines will shake out. I thought the Modin-Pevs-Petts line was a surefire lock considering the way they played together early in the pre-season. But alas, it just goes to show Ramsay has something else in mind. And of course, a trade or waiver acquisition could be in the offing. We shall see in the next day or two.

DB – ooops, you’re right! Forgot that, but according to capgeek.com, Freddy stood to make more than Dawes due to bonuses and such. Oh well, still a bit surprising, but Dawes certainly earned his chance. Also, Stewart’s size, speed and tenacity on the forecheck definitely helped endear himself to Ramsay. Petts got beat out, plain and simple. But he will be back, I don’t doubt that at all.

You guys will like Dawes. He is a solid player, who if given the proper ice time could net 15 goals or so. I was kind of surprised Calgary got rid of him. He has a lot of heart and skill for a small guy – definitely plays bigger than his size. Todd White looks to be a spare part with the Rangers. He is on the roster for now, but may not remain there once Chris Drury and Vinny Prospal come back from IR. The captain of the gold medal winning US WJC team, Derek Stepan, appears to have beaten him out for the center ice position. I can’t wait for the season to start!!!

I like that fourth line of Eager, Thorburn, Stewart. Three big guys who are young, can skate and put up big numbers in their junior days. Questions are will they shut-down and take advantage of teams’ second and third lines at home? Will they be able to shut-down teams’ top lines defensively on the road? Thorburn will have to get better at defensive zone face-offs. All three will win the battles along the boards. Break the puck out, dump it deep, and battle some more. On paper and pre-season it looks good.

Can’t believe Boulton and Thorburn are still on this team. I have seen enough of both of them. They hustle but have not produced for years. The fact that we could not upgrade the bottom of our roster beyond these guys amazes me. That being said, Dudley obviously knows talent well but I believe we have left too much of it on the Chicago Wolves.

Why is everyone getting so bent out of shape about Petterson getting sent down today? It isn’t Friday yet. The roster has not been 100% finalized. You push the guys down that you can who don’t have to go through waivers. Keep others who have to go through waivers on the roster one day or two more if you are afraid to lose them and try to make trades. Has anyone seen Petterson get on a plane yet? Maybe he is hanging around Duluth, waiting for a few more dominos to fall.

Plus as others wrote, you send him to the AHL, let Burms play his 9 games and then call Petterson back up.

We are in really good shape right now with roster depth and due to that I have a feeling there will be a trade or two before the season kicks off.

So excited for Friday night! Go Thrashers!
