Thrashers reduce roster by eight

The Thrashers released six players on Wednesday. They re-assigned forwards Angelo Esposito, Michael Forney, Danick Paquette and Jared Ross and defensemen Paul Postma and Mike Siklenka to AHL Chicago. The team also released forward Andre Deveaux and Kyle McLaren from their tryout contracts.

Esposito, who missed the past three practices with a lower-body injury, was skating at the team’s practice facility prior to Wednesday’s practice. He hoped to return Thursday. Esposito is returning from two torn ACLs in his right knee.

The Wolves open training camp on Monday.

The Thrashers now have 38 players in training camp. Patrice Cormier and Andrew Kozek are injured.

Here are the new training camp groupings:

Forwards: Evander Kane, Bryan Little Patrick Rissmiller, Nigel Dawes, Niclas Bergfors, Anthony Stewart, Eric Boulton, Spencer Machacek, Akim Aliu. Jim Slater is not practicing today.

The Group A line pairings are:

Boulton-Machacek-Aliu

Group B

Goaltenders: Ondrej Pavelec, Drew MacIntyre

Anyone else surprised Espo is reassigned so fast?

I know Espo has been injured but I thought that he would have at least gotten into one game. McLaren is not much of a surprise, not sure why he was even invited to camp. Hopefully Espo gets some quality time in down with the Wolves and gets a shot later in the season as a call up to show his wares.

Billbert,

When was Slava in the pressbox? At the end of last year? How about the other years when he was a fantastic player for the Thrash? Yeah.. no one could sit in the press box like him, eh? Come back when you can appreciate a good hockey player.

Surprising to see Esposito get re-assigned so quickly. Thought he had a chance at the third line center job. At least he should’ve been given a chance to play in one of the exhibition games. Would have liked to have seen him play.

Yeah I would have thought Esposito would have a chance to get in at least one game before being re-assigned but other than that no real surprises.

Hopefully Boris gets sent down in the next round of cuts. Either Kulda or Meyer deserve the 7th d-man position.

I think Esposito might not be !00% yet (but probably close) and/or not use to constantly playing hockey. Hopefully he will be completely healed and up to speed in a month or two and get a call up.

@ TheRealThrash……seriously??

So if I bad mouthed YOU, it will be no big deal, because I have the right to my opinion?

False.

I just get tired of people complaining about a team that has not even played a single game yet. Pre-season games are nothing. They are a way for coaches to gauge their players, nothing more. Columbus did not beat the Atlanta Thrashers last night. A team beat another team last night. Plain and simple.

Chicago should be pretty good…question remains about the Thrashers. There was nothing else to do with Esposito. The guys has not played hockey in 3 years and is still unable to play. There is no way he makes this team unless he can get a solid year under him with the Wolves.

Espo probably pushed it too hard and is feeling the strains of surgery. (I believe if he reinjured the knee he would not have been eligible to be released?) He was my darkhorse pick at center but KLS1 probably has it right in him not playing much in the past couple of years and is not 100% ready to return.

Timbo_Slice

Espo is getting an opportunity to rest before Chicago’s camp fires up on Monday. Maybe Burmistrov will have an opportunity to play in the first 8 to 10 NHL games at the beginning of the season before we send him back to the OHL, which will then open up a spot for either Cormier or Espo to come up from Chicago depending on which of the two is playing the best coming off of injuries.

Preseason or not, good to have hockey back especially in light of all the football BS. Notes from last night, the first 30 days of the regular season will tell me more than than three periods in the summer. The huge scoreboard coming in from the CNN center is still out. I believe that’s five seasons and counting. Take care of your home Spirit and maybe it will take care of you. I do love the game of hockey, the Thrashers and Philips but fix the damn scoreboard and a little air freshner in the restrooms and people may not think your a “pissant” franchise. Let’s go Thrashers!

Everybody has the right to an opinion. Everyone has the right to vent. I think that was venting. It’s best left ignored, than responded to, in my opinion. I am a little bit surprised Esposito got the hook so quickly. But, again, I do trust Ramsay to do what’s best for the team. If this is his decision, then it is what it is.

Folks, no one be freaking out in preseason. Or in October.

Most in the national league have payed dues in the minors to learn the pro game. it is rare for an 18-20 year old to make it. Even Kyle Turris (an early first round pick) went back for a full year in the minors after playing his entire rookie year with the Coyotes. The only way I keep a youngster is if he is a can’t miss like a Kane or Toews or even Zach or Evander. The finals last year were loaded with AHL players. We should want our new players to be battle tested for the rigors of t

Espo isn’t ready for the Thrashers and he is dinged up (maybe) or he is having post-surgery problems (worse). There is no reason to waste valuable pre-season ice time on a player in his condition. Let him get on down to Chicago and try to have a productive year there. If he is sound and shows he is ready, maybe he gets a call-up during the season.

Unless Alex has some news that nobody else does, nobody has reported Slava Kozlov signing with the KHL (that’s what he means when he says “kxl”).

I was also disappointed that Espo didn’t play in a game in the pre-season, but I didn’t expect him to make the team anyway.

it’s good to have tough decisions to make..wheras these were easy decisions. espo was injured again. some of you must have missed that and the fact he wasn’t going to take a roster spot from anyone. i’m not sure why so many pencil him onto the roster every year when he gets hurts in practice and is recovering from major surgery. same can be said of boris..he is coming back major surgery..he at least has a plausible excuse, i’d like to hear one for ron hainsey? wait..he hasn’t been able to play with anyone other than oduya because..oduya refuses to be infected by his lazy effort. hainesy has already been called out by rammer. i’ll be glad when this DW mistake is finally gone when his NTC wears off. thanks DW.

mclaren was a long shot at best and he came up lame in practice.. end of the line, sad ending.

Sean… they’ll be of the “ugly” variety. The era of the dangle goals is over in Atlanta.

Both goals from the preseason game from Little and Petersson is what you can expect. Bombs from the blueline with forwards redirecting them or crashing the net for rebounds.
