The Thrashers traded forward Todd White to the New York Rangers on Monday in exchange for forwards Donald Brashear and Patrick Rissmiller. The Thrashers placed Brashear on waivers and intend to buyout the remaining $1.3 million on his contract.
White will make $2.6 million this season, the final of a four-year deal work a total of $9.5 million he signed with the Thrashers.
“I’m excited to be going to New York,” White told me. “It’s a great opportunity and a great team and I think I can add a lot.”
It was an injury-plagued season for White, who missed the last eight games of the season and underwent surgery to repair a dislocated shoulder and torn labrum. He also suffered two knee dislocations during the season. In 65 games, he had 26 points (seven goals, 19 assists).
“I enjoyed by time in Atlanta,” White said. “My kids were sad to find out today we wouldn’t be going back. The team is moving in the right direction and I’m a little disappointed I won’t be a part of it. I’m ready to move on (from the injuries) and help the Rangers win.”
Brashear had one assist last season in 36 games with the Rangers. With the buyout, the Thrashers will pay two-thirds of Brashear’s contract over two years (twice the years remaining). They will pay him a total of $866,000. Including a $200,000 signing bonus (paid by the Rangers), the salary cap hit for the Thrashers will be $533,000 next season and $433,000 in 2011-12.
Rissmiller played last season in the AHL with Hartford and Grand Rapids. In 63 games for Grand Rapids, he had 45 points (20 goals, 25 assists). He is due $1 million. He has appeared in 182 NHL games with San Jose and the Rangers, including the entire 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons with the Sharks. His NHL totals include 18 goals and 27 assists.

According to Ben Wright, Brashear is going straight to waivers and will be bought out if he clears. Moving White just frees up a center spot likely for Cormier and the extra $$ hopefully can secure another forward ie Mad Max.

White, though loathed across the comment sections was (minus injuries obviously) a decent center. This move is amazing because Cormier should have a spot, more money, and another solid AHL type with experiece to throw in with the rest of our young and talented system. Rick Dudley has been the best GM in the city ALREADY since John Sherhoultz called it quits. Gotta love what he’s doing. I wish White luck in NY. But the Thrash will be a force to be reckoned with
Besides… We dont need Brashear. I’d take Akim Aliu any day for much cheaper

Really like this move. The buyout of Brashear is a lot less expensive than the buyout of White and accomplishes the same thing in freeing up a roster space. So, that’s a wash with a money savings. I don’t know anything about Rissmiller, but even if he turns out to be “bag of pucks” we still got the better end of this deal.

Good move by Duds to effectively buy-out White, but for much less money. I think we end up saving about $800 k over two years if Brashear doesn’t get claimed…and I doubt he will.
Now does this mean we go out and sign Matthew Lombardi? We can now afford to sign him for $3-3.5 M or bring Max back for mid $2s.
Chief – look for Freddie Pettersson and Machacek to get long, hard looks in camp for the 3rd line RW position. Perhaps even Klingberg, but I think he’s another year away.

I think Rissmiller makes like $1 mil a year for at least 1, maybe 2 more years. Thus, it may be almost an even salary move – White’s $2.6 for Brashear’s and Rissmiller’s – around $2.4. Rissmiller actually is a big guy, more of third line, fourth line guy, who never got a shot with the Rangers. Sounds like a good move for both teams.

Rismiller has one year left at $1 M. He’s got a one-way contract and we’ll have to pay him the Full Monty if he plays for the Wolves; in other words, his salary is $1 M no matter what. He’d also have to clear waivers I presume so he may be our 14th forward…Boulton being 13?

One more thing. Brashear, whether he is bought out or put in the minors, counts against the cap – he was signed when he was 35 or over; whereas, White, was signed when he was under 35, he can be sent down and not count against the cap. Both of these guys were spare parts with no shot to play for the Rangers – this is why Ranger fans are shocked that someone took these two pieces of ____ for someone who might actually play.

This is a move dictated by the CBA. If White sucks, so be it – we already know that Brashear does and Rissmiller was never really given a fair shake. The funny thing is there aren’t many Rangers fans talking about putting White in the minors. They’re talking about him like he’s the key missing “veteran” piece to a young team. I hope he does do well and sometimes a change of scenery does wonders. Dudley did us a solid one by opening up a spot on the roster that White was, well, occupying. So far Dudley has looked like the Anti-Waddell. That’s the difference between being able to accurately evaluate talent and price it accurately and having no clue about it.

Rissmiller played ENTIRELY in the AHL last season, not “primarily in the AHL last season”. He is 31 years old and last played in the NHL (2 games) in the 08-09 season. He worked his way down to the AHL after being an NHL regular (4th liner) for a few seasons. He’s on the decline. Just because he is big, that doesn’t mean he’s any good.

I wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss this as a “minor” trade for fans of the 2 teams involved. If you polled Thrasher fans (before today) asking who they wanted gone from Blueland, it would’ve been an almost unanimous White outcome. Rangers fans are also ecstatic about dumping their two. If you’re anywhere else in the country, then it’s a non-event…But not here or there. I don’t think Dudley meant to add anything in this move as much as it’s addition by subtraction. It helps both clubs to some extent…But I still think it helps us more. Just because White will earn $2.6M this year and is recovering from shoulder surgery after the worst year of his career doesn’t mean he’s any good either…
Darkhorse

At least you can tell Dudley has a plan and he’s not wasting much time getting to it. Whether the plan works remains to be seen. But he’s spending more time selling the clunkers on the used car lot to make room for the new dealership, than bringing in worn down inventory at cheap prices to fill the lot, as the old GM loved to do. Proactive, not reactive for a change.
Now if we can find a way to trade for an impact scoring forward, or sign maybe Max at the very least, we should be at least fairly happy after one offseason with the new GM.

So, what’s up with Bergfors? He’s a RFA, was given a qualifying offer, and presumably his agent has been talking with management about a longer-term deal. Any rumors out there? If they don’t agree on a longer-term contract, what would be the terms for the upcoming season?

DaveR, those are good kind of dumps. In the strictest of economic terms, “dumping” means “selling at below fair market value,” usually in an attempt to do damage to some industry sector, usually pertaining to another country. Anti-dumping would be measures used to combat these “unfair trade practices.” But in this case, neither Todd White, nor Brashear, nor Rissmiller are being used to unfairly infiltrate another’s market at below cost. No, this is the other kind of dumping. By that, of course, I mean … like … ya know … leaving your date at the prom. Straight up, “dumping.”

I was convinced we were stuck with Todd White this year. But credit Dudley/Waddell with finding a home for Todd. I considered it an impossible task. Waddell has, in the past, STUNNED me with his ability to unload a player. When he moved Modry out of town, with Stefan, to the Dallas Stars, it was one of my happiest days as a Thrasher fan. I was likewise surprised when the Dallas Stars agreed to accept Kari Lehtonen, for a strong defenseman prospect. It doesn’t end there. Waddell got Burke to take Exelby off our hands, with Colin Stuart, for Stapleton and Kubina. Amazing move by Waddell. Every so often, he pulls one off.

Lee, if Kovy opts for the KHL, after all this, there will be those who seriously question Gary Bettman and the NHL. It’s at least arguable that Kovalchuk is one of the NHL’s top stars. People who do not know or understand the dynamics of the salary cap will only think, “So, the NHL had one of the top players in the world under contract, only to invalidate the contract, and push him towards another league.”
Except that … I don’t believe for one, split second that Kovy will play a minute in the KHL next season. He’ll re-sign with NJ. You know Lou had a “Plan B” … and has since this thing was slated for arbitration. It’s just a matter of time until the new contract is announced.
