Rollins still interested in buying Thrashers

I talked to Los Angeles-based film producer Stephen Rollins Friday to see if he was still interested in purchasing the Thrashers.

You will recall, that in May, the Atlanta native said he had assembled a group of investors that were interested in purchasing an NHL franchise.

“My group and I are still looking at various organizations and Atlanta and the Thrashers are still one of those organizations that we are deeply interested in,” Rollins told the AJC.

Rollins, the head of Los Angeles-based Lightning Picture has said  he is part of a multi-city financial entity with members in Los Angeles, Atlanta, New York and London that was put together to purchase a majority interest in an NHL team. He said several of the investors are from Atlanta.

The Atlanta Spirit, owners of the Thrashers, Hawks and Philips Arena, has issued statements saying it is looking for investors to join their group. Co-owner Bruce Levenson said in May that there are three groups interested in investing in the organization that are working with the investment banking firm hired by the partnership. He said in M ay that he expected a deal with one or two of those  groups to be completed within 90 days.

If any of this is true, let’s hope a couple of the interested parties in ATL are former Flames players.

But other than that I guess we should be thankful that none of the prospectives is from Canada.;-)

The Thrashers are still here?

Call me a fair weather fan or what have you, but I’m not even thinking about whipping out my wallet until we win a playoff match up… Hockey is one of the best sports to see in person, but this is not really hockey…

Let me add an “Amen brother” to The Sham. When they get interested in putting a decent team on the ice I’ll go to a game. When you trade off all your star players, fans disconnect. I’m not sure I could name two players on the roster, I’m just saying……………….

Derp derp?

This is the same guy who said he’s keeping the team in Atlanta.

I think most people that read about Rollins in May came to the conclusion that he was a poser with no legitimate shot at actually buying the team. Nothing here makes me believe any different.

@Sham and Asheville Dog (Learn to spell) – The Thrashers were in the playoff hunt until the last week of the season last year. You missed some awesome hockey. But stay the fair weather fans that you are, and leave hockey talk to the grown ups.

No derp derp Alan R, there is ALWAYS some random poster here that either talks about us moving, or says that there will be no good quality product on ice, etc etc etc.
Any time ANYONE has mentioned the words THRASHERS, INVESTORS and PURCHASE in the same breath usually the word RELOCATION is not that far behind (And some remember what Tom Cousins did to the flames way way way back). Read any story on TSN.ca/NHL about the thrash and at least one A$$-hat talks about “Stacking the team for their move to Winnipeg”.
I’m a bit of a black sheep here on C-Viv and Rawhide’s blogs, after a few years you notice when the same things pop up over and over. Saying “Cue the Moving to Winnipeg rumors” before anyone else can talk about how much we suck, where we are moving to, or how the team has been battered and mistreated since they were sold to the ASG.
Being the black sheep is ok with me by the way. I try to engage with everyone here in the conversations but I either annoy you all or I am overlooked. Regardless I love the Thrashers from the minute they were announced back in the 90’s.

It’d really be nice to find a local single owner with major buckage to buy the team. Haven’t we already seen what an ownership “group” is giving us?

I’m not sure I think Rollins is a poser, I’m just against another ownership group thing. I don’t have any reason to question his passion or loyalty to the community of Atlanta — I don’t know him.

is it just me or is the whole “move the team” thing getting old. They are not moving and we do have an on ice product. Its people with your attitudes that keep butts out of the seats. So either shut up or get to a game and have fun. If its that big of a deal to you than cheer for the away team

Chris-Thanks for all the effort over the past few weeks with tracking players/agents/and possible investors down!

Hope the rumors from a “win now” mandate from the owners to Wadudley are partly to keep or attract possible investors. I would think if you are a person/group looking to buy/invest into an NHL franchise, the Thrashers are a team with a solid core of young talent, low cap(compared to the max), manageable contracts, large market(if you can market the team properally and win), great arena, and close to legit playoff caliber with a few tweaks. I would consider them as seriously as the Yotes, or Lightning(who were sold recently).

Sorry to see Kubina go, as he would be a strong anchor on the backend heading towards a possible playoff spot. Hope the $$$ meant for him are spent on a solid scoring forward.

Well Jakass, Atlantas famous “Fair Weather Fans” will be out in full next season, replacing their current Pens jerseys with Chicago or Philly next season, and they will collect in droves at Philips. 3 friends and I had the misfortune of being in the club level during Crotchbys mid-season visit to our house, we were the ONLY Thrashers fans around, except for the drunk fool behind us who took it upon himself to threaten a Pens fan who was a little overly excited to have his wife and 3 kids to their first NHL Game – Threatening a five year old was a new low for drunken fools at Atlanta sports events (but better than the Philly Baseball fan who puked on a Cop and his daughter at her first MLB game)
I would have LOVED to see those Fair Weather Fans react when Cooke was KO’ed by Kane at the end of the season.
I have said it before and will say it again, TO ALL BLOG READERS: if you want to talk about the Atlanta Thrashers, go at it. If you want to bash the Thrash (deserved or not) then do us all a favor and STFU and follow whatever team you plan on basing your wardrobe around. I’m just here to share my love for our team and hope that we are here for a long, long time. Letting the Flames go robbed kids who grew up in the 70’s and 80’s (like myself) of a wonderful sport and I will FIGHT TO KEEP OUR TEAM HERE.

Hockey is awesome. Thrashers are over with wadells 5 year plans and are now starting a 3 month plan, the moves RDuds made this week are more than wadell made in either of his 5 year plans, yes he had 2 5 year plans that failed pretty miserably. Yea, one playoff apperance, but that 4 game sweep by the ranjerks still stings. Go Thrashers.

That’s right. I’ve heard it all a million times. There’s always someone who pops in, usually a regular with a fake name, or some Cletus J. Was just on my mind and reading that TSN article where they are dedicating a week of programming time just to look at why the NHL should expand or relocate and of course people were slamming the “Sunbelt” Teams. It pi$$es me off to no end too…. Makes me hope all 6 teams in Canada start to suck and fans like us start telling them “Careful now, the league plans to expand to BOTH Kansas Cities” just so they get a taste of how frustrating it can be. Guess I should have worded my initial thought differently. I totally give up trying to post on these blogs. I either annoy folks or nobody really gives a damn on my thoughts and opinions. I get it, and again I am sorry if any of you feel as if I had wasted your time.

I agree with Joe Friday, and the others, that Rollins doesn’t impress me much. And I don’t want to see anyone more “groups” as owners. Can’t we get one person to be an owner? And have a face to put on the franchise. Isn’t there some billionaire out there, with a lot of unrequited childhood dreams, who wishes to buy the Hawks, Thrashers and Philips Arena, so we can be done with lawsuits and their appeals?

I don’t see what owning a “portion” of the Thrashers will achieve, for some potential investor. The money’s in the venue. Gotta offer a percentage of the profits of Philips Arena to attract investors. Then force them to accept funneling money into the hockey team, too. Good luck with all that.

The truth is unless you really know the poster in these blogs, the only way to elicit some sort of response is to become a troll, which I refuse to do.
I wish all fellow Thrasher fans well and hope to share a beer or two with you guys this upcoming season and if the rumors of a pending sale are indeed true I pray the team stays here. It would truly break my heart to see this team go.

I didn’t buy what Rollins was selling in May and I’m not buying it now. This guy is lower on the Hollywood ladder than Bobby Bowfinger. The Thrashers do not need to go from one multi-city ownership group to yet another.

I have a feeling that the Dickey family may be looking at investing in the Thrashers or perhaps buying them outright. They were one of the parties interested in buying the Braves before Time-Warner sold them to Liberty Media several years back.

This pretty well sums up why some have lost interest. I’d like to root for them as strongly as I did when they started, but you’ve got to give the fans something to cheer about. Three winning seasons and one sweep in the playoffs doesn’t cut it. Throw in the fact that all their star players leave ASAP makes it hard to keep hopeful. ASG doesn’t earn a lot of confidence either. There are times when the Thrashers seem like an afterthought to them. If the owners can’t be interested in their own team, why should the fans?

Jacking up ticket prices and donkey “Deal with it” statements with still no appology was more detrimental to this franschise than all the over paid contracts, exodus of stars, pss poor shot differentials, and home game loses combined.

Unfortunately It’s going to take more than just winning to turn this tug.
