4 p.m. update: Thrashers lose Armstrong; quiet on free agent front

It’s pretty quiet on the Thrashers’ free agency front. Looks like GM Rick Dudley is waiting to see what happens and perhaps pursue the trade he talked about.

One of the Thrashers nine remaining UFAs is moving on. Colby Armstrong signed a three-year deal with Toronto worth $3 million a year. Must have happen fast. I sent him a text this morning asking if he heard anything. He hadn’t. Next thing you know, he’s a Leaf.

“It’s crazy right now. Wow,” he said in a text following the deal.

For those looking ahead, Thrashers host Toronto on Jan. 7 and Feb. 27. Thrashers in Toronto on Dec. 20 and Feb. 7.

I heard from Eric Boulton also. Still not close with Bolts. He said he’d love to stay in Atlanta but is looking for a fair deal.

As of 2 p.m., I’m told nothing is imminent with the Thrashers.

As of 4 p.m., I’m told,  in response to questions about goaltending situation, that the team is “working on it.”

Stay tuned.

ASG wont spend money on the thrashers

Hey Eddie, what money are you talking about? $3 million for 3 years is too high for a guy who has lost his edge.

Colby could be a good fit for TML… performance in ATL was not worth $3M/year.

did Boulton seem optimistic about re-signing?

Addition by subtraction. The leafs way overpaid for a player that takes way too many games off.

Let all the other teams overpay for these players. I like Dudley’s plan-keep building through young talent and smart acquisitions at a fair market price.

It’s not about ASG not spending money (although yes they can be cheap – but they were willing to pony up $100 mil for Kovalchuck, so maybe we should cut them a break)). It’s about managing contracts in a cap era.

I’d like to be the Blackhawks some day hoisting the Cup, but not having to trade 4 or 5 good players two weeks later because we’re over the cap.

Army is terrible for what he is supposed to be good at.

Geez….Offer Kovy $101M and people still say, “ASG won’t spend money on the thrashers”…LOL

Colby is where he belongs. Overpaying for a player is DONE while Duds is GM. I’d rather watch a bunch of big, hungry guys trying to prove they deserve bigger paychecks than a bunch of overpaid, think-they’re-already-there guys skate around the rink looking for others to make plays.

That’s what we’re going to get with Duds and that’s why we’re playoffs bound this year. He’ll fill the holes without overpaying for a single player. And the result will be a very competitive team that should be fun to watch.

The real reason Army signed elsewhere was because I didn’t respond to his emails years ago.

Wow, that guy really holds a grudge!!

3 million per yr for Armstrong is way overpriced. The guy doesn’t show up every game, has average hands and speed, a 3rd liner at best. He makes 1-2 highlight hits a year and is pretty much invisible the rest of the time.

Now if they could just find someone to take Todd White.

$3 Million is too much for a 3rd line guy that took LOTS of games off.

Do you really think the ASG is going to spend any money? They have none left if Joe Johnson takes the 125 mil.

Colby didn’t want to be here. He even said he wanted to play in a hockey town ATL =/= hockey town. Colby NEVER wanted to be here. So, good riddance.

$3 mil is way too much for what he brings, and he obviously was only interested in the money cause he’s going to one of the few teams that Atlanta has actually finished better than in recent years.

Great article in the USA Today about the glut of free agent goalies out there that could provide a good bargain or two. I think the world of Moose, but come on fellas, the pricetag for a Mason, Turco, Theodore wouldn’t be much higher and would bring in a true #1 goalie – which is a MUST if we are to take a real step forward!

Good deal for Armstrong – poor contract for the Leafs.

There will be several young guys who can play his minutes and hopefully surpassed his inconsistent play.

amazing how the perception of armstrong changed over two years. but there just were too many games that he was not a factor. Would not be surprised to see him bounce back somewhat with the Leafs but it was not going to happen here.

From ESPN inSider a few hrs ago……

After missing out on Dan Ellis — and apparently not confident in re-signing Johan Hedberg — the Atlanta Thrashers may be targeting other free agent goalies.

David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period suggests that the Thrashers could go after Chris Mason, and they could also make sense as a destination for Evgeni Nabokov or Marty Turco, given how the dominoes are falling.

Flames – that depends on how deep the pockets of the new owner(s) happen(s) to be! Would love to have an owner solely committed to hockey, but I just dont’ see where this money would be coming from in today’s business climate. But then again, Thrashers might be bargain basement.
