Ramsay wants up-tempo team

After talking to new Thrashers head coach Craig Ramsay, I can tell you that he wants to play an aggressive forechecking, up-tempo style. Look for defenseman to join to rush in an effort to create four-man rushes.

Here are some of the highlights from today’s conference call:

“We want the defensemen to join as many rushes as they can,” Ramsay said. “We want to create four-man rushes as much as possible. I think we can do it with the personnel that we have. … We want to be aggressive and as up-tempo as we can.”

“I’m even-tempered. I think it’s important to keep your temper. There are times to get in guy’s faces but a steady diet of that is not a good thing.”

“We have players in place that can play the up-tempo game I like to play.”

“If we can go into camp with a different attitude that we expect to win, we can’t just hope to survive.”

Here are some quotes from others:

Ron Hainsey: “It’s good to have a guy in place. I know Duds has a long relationship with him. He’s coming from a team that’s had success. He played in the league for 15 years. I don’t know much about him at all. It’s a new start for all of us.”

“It’s been an exciting week. We had the trade, added some new guys and now he have a new coach. It really gets you going.”

Chris Thorburn: “I talked to a guy who played for him in Tampa Bay and he loved him. He’s a great player’s coach. … It’s a fresh start and I can’t wait to get started.”

Bruins defenseman Johnny Boychuk: “He actually (influenced me) quite a bit. He always would talk to me, even when I wasn’t playing. He would shoot me drills in practice to work on my foot speed and decision making and almost everything as part of my defensive game, just to make it better. He’s a great coach and I wish him well.”

Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli: “He’s a real calming guy. He’s really good 1-on-1 with guys. A ton of experience and he can communicate with the guys on a level that, when you’re day to day and you have to tell guys what they’re doing wrong, it gets tiresome from both sides. He can really connect that way to the players and he still can be passionate.”

Looks like it won’t take long for the rest of the coaching staff to be put in place. Rick Dudley acknowledged there have been talks with others, he declined to be specific, and said it “won’t take an inordinate amount of time.”

Now, let’s get ready for the draft.

Man he loves the word “inordinate”!

What was he reaction when he was asked about Torchetti? Did no one tackle that on the call? Duds doesn’t seem like the “no comment” type of guy.

Duds wants Torch to be the assistant Head Coach. ASG has to agree to his salary. That’s the argument that is going on now. If Duds loses this argument, then it will be the Wolves head coach. Don’t give in Duds!!!!!!!

Up-tempo style, aggressive forecheck, defensemen joining the rush … I thought Anderson wasn’t the coach anymore?

Enter your comments hereGood Stuff! We just got better! Bottom line. There is more trades to come. We almost got Sharp in the last deal. The Blackhawks wanted Cormier instead Morin and the # 8 not the # 24. Duds is real high on Cormier and wanted to keep the # 8. A third deal is in the works. As far as Boults goes he is a UFA. A little birdie told me that Detriot wants him. They need someone with a small salary to keep the flies away from their superstars. Boults told the Thrashers that he doesn’t want to leave Atlanta. Hockey Is BACK in Atlanta!!!!!!

That was my thought when I heard what Ramsay wants to do, too, Sara. I’m still a bit optimistic, though, that he’ll be a different kind of coach, you know? He’s got some experience, after all.

T27, I’m not sure how he knows Boulton wants to stay; However, Detroit’s GM Ken Holland came out recently and said they are looking for an enforcer. It’s easy for us as fans to put two and two together.

I’ll give it to Flames. I was very skeptical of his comments the last few days, but in the aftermath of the trade, it turns out he’s been correct about nearly everything. I don’t know who he is, but he knows and is trusted by somebody with or close to the team.

Well I like an aggressive forecheck as the Thrashers previously couldn’t seem to get much of a forecheck established on all the lines. The only caution I have is will he have this team playing better defensively as a whole? When you are aggressive on the forecheck too much you will give the other team plenty of possible odd man rushes. Tampa plays a pretty aggressive forecheck as well, but they are sometimes suseptable on D.

I’ve read so much about the trade in the past 24 hours I don’t recall where I read it, but Flames statement above was confirmed. Dudley wouldn’t part with the 8th or Cormier.

I happened to stumble upon a couple of amazing stats from our new head coach’s playing career. In 14 seasons (1070 games) playing for the Sabres, Ramsay totaled…..201 PIM’s.

In the 1973-1974 season he played 78 games and totaled, are you ready???? Zero PIM’s. (He did the same thing in 57 games in his 1971-1972 rookie season.) I’m not sure how that will translate to current times and the obvious needs, but some of our boys could use some help staying out of the sin bin…..

Sara and others, I had the same thought (Anderson) about the d-men jumping in for four man rushes. BUt I don’t think Anderson ever stressed enough or stressed effectively about all five skaters being defensively responsible. You can have a three or four man rush but they all can’t finish. Do your part on the rush up ice then if you’re trailing, you think defensive positioning.

Flames…almost got Sharp. Almost very nice. But I like Buf at this point, too. Hoping and expecting more deals to come, perhaps tomorrow at the draft and/or leading up to July 1 and of course maybe a good FA signing or two.

Flames,

Not that anyone dislikes getting a good scoop here, but many dillholes like to spout off like they’re “in the know.” Consider that, most who truly are “in the know” aren’t going to put their confidence at risk on a blog.

Forgive me if I ask questions. One of the first things I was taught in college was to always consider the source of information. If you’re someone who is truly “in the know” I don’t expect you to identify yourself, but at least give us some context as to how you come across such info. Thanks!

Let us cut Flames some slack. If he is on the inside he obviously should not out himself.

Instead, watch what he says and be sceptically interested. If he is right and gets us news that is accurate then we really trust him down the road.

But as they say on the streets, don’t burn a source. :)

Looks like the start of a real change in personnel, strategy and atmosphere. Both Ramsey and Dudley were good, gritty defensive players and I think that we’ll see a far different stamp on this team. Anderson gave Bogosian, Enstrom, and Hainsey the green light to join the rush but it appeared to me that there was no forward rotation back to cover for them. I doubt that we’ll see Ramsey let that happen.

Lysiak-Rammer was one of the classier acts of the 70’s and early 80’s. This guys can teach the game just by showing films of how he played the game. And he was never shy about going into the corners or going in front of the net.

Helluva a lot better than playing a down-tempo game. We don’t have enough scorers to not have our defense jump up on the play.

I like Ramsay but wonder if there will be posturing going on behind the scenes if you bring Torchetti in as assistant since he was interviewed for the HC?

And why would Torch leave his current spot for a sideways move to a troubled franchise? May be better to have Ramsay choose his own assistants…unless you buy into the whole team of rivals phenomenon.

i had an acquaintance in chicago tell me last night that they heard on ESPNChicago that torch was coming here for a coaching position and that there was some issue with friction between him and the rest of the blackhawks coaching staff. Sorry I don’t have more detail and I have no idea if it’s true or not; just passing along what someone told me.

the difference will be that while the guys are fore checking hard, they will HAVE to get back on the defensive end. Fore check, back check, no time for figure 8’s and cherry picking. Accountability. Ramsey knows how to play this game. Not as a superstar, but as a hard working smart player. And if he can teach the team that and get in the face of those needing it now and then (um *cough* Todd White) to motivate them rather than blaming the freakin bouncing puck for EVERY bad game…..can’t wait for the season. Kane should benefit TREMENDOUSLY from this.

Consider that he’s not just the Thrashers beat writer, but was probably covering the Hawks draft and the Braves. At the same time.

Yeah, he makes a living with words, but when you’ve got fans of multiple sports craving coverage and information, sometimes things get written hastily. You know, like a blog (which isn’t the same as a news story).

…the ASG is low-balling Torchetti’s contract and he’s none-too-pleased. Apparently, JT wants to come here (read about how tight Duds and Torch became during their ECHL days and you’ll understand), but of course the tight-cheeked ASG doesn’t want to pony up for a talent-rich staff of assistants…same story, different day?

The more I study this trade the more I like it……..Dudley is putting his imprint on the franchise very quickly………….I think the staff will give Cormier a real chance to make the team out of training camp much like the last two years with Bogosian and Kane………….Anybody heard how Esposito`s rehab is going? It would be great if he finally reached his potential.

Esposito is likely never going to achieve what was expected of him after the repeated injuries, I think both knees, or one knee twice. I read that he’s still training and living here in Atlanta with Zach, so who knows. I’d be surprised if he gets back to where he was when he was considered a top pick though.

I’m a bit surprised by Ramsay’s comments. What he’s outlined, at first glimpse, seems eerily similar to John Anderson’s “system,” of which we’ve already seen the results. I was hoping, rather, that Ramsay would talk up the defensive vision he has for this club, moving forward. We must start to manage the goals against, in a serious manner. Only a handful of teams win the Cup giving up 260 or more goals. Compare it to 220 or less, for the tale of the tape.

But, I remain ever optimistic in this “new” Dudley Administration. I’ve seen Dudley pull of deals that Waddell couldn’t or wouldn’t. I just hope we don’t move pick # 8. And if we do, it better be something good.
