The Atlanta native and Los Angeles based filmmaker who recently expressed interest in purchasing majority ownership of the Thrashers is not one of three groups currently doing due diligence about a possible investment in the franchise.
Atlanta Spirit co-owner Bruce Levenson and team president Don Waddell told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Thursday that Stephen Rollins has not made an offer to purchase the team. He is also not one of three groups working with an investment banking firm to invest in the Thrashers. Levenson said earlier this month he expects the process with the three current groups to be completed within 90 days.
Rollins, the head of Lightning Pictures, told the AJC that he is part of a multi-city financial entity with members in Los Angeles, Atlanta, New York and London that was put together to purchase a majority interest in an NHL team. He said several of the investors are from Atlanta.
“If the opportunity would present itself for me to participate in ownership of the Atlanta Thrashers I would be more than excited,” Rollins said. “I would be humbled with a partnership at any level.”
Rollins, 39, said no bid to purchase the Thrashers has been made. He did not give a timetable for such an inquiry. Rollins said he and other members of his group attended a Thrashers game in December.
Rollins wrote and directed the 2007 film American Identity. He has also appeared in several movies and television shows, some uncredited.
Atlanta Spirit, LLC has been trying to add investors to the ownership group, which includes the Thrashers, Hawks and Philips Arena, for the past year. Levenson said based on the goals of the current potential investors that it was unlikely that all three would commit to the group, but that “one or more” was a possibility.

I spoke to Atlanta Spirit co-owner Bruce Levenson. He told me that Rollins is not one of the three groups that are currently doing due diligence about a possible investment in the Thrashers and/or Hawks.
That’s kind of what the story says. The way Rollins is wording his statements, it gives the impression that he has yet to talk to Levenson, but that he is more than interested in the idea of being an owner.

I agree with Teflo. Look at his movie credits at imdb. He hasn’t done anything much beyond bit parts. Unless he is a trust fund baby, I don’t know where his money would come from.
However, I would love to have an owner who:
1. Is from Atlanta
2. Is a hockey fan
3. Has no interest in owning the Hawks as well
Whoever it is, they better give Waddell the boot!

From IMDb: “Rollins was born on September 10, 1974, to Dianne (born Dorothy Dianne Hicks), a telecommunications specialist with Bell South and President of the Atlanta chapter of the Telephone Pioneers of America, and James Rollins, a Fulton County, Georgia deputy sheriff. Stephen’s father served in the United States Army Rangers, and his Uncle Edward Rollins served in the Marines.”
Hardly a trust-fund baby!!
“Stephen spent his early years playing sports, mainly hockey and baseball. In 1993, Stephen began his ventures in professional hockey, skating with the Atlanta Knights and Kansas City Blades of the International Hockey League. In 1994, Stephen played with the “New Jersey Rock n’ Rollers of the RHI league, a professional roller hockey league. Since, Stephen has skated with several different NHL, AHL, and IHL teams until an ankle injury in 2004 finally took him off skates.”

He sounded pretty good in the AP story, at first. But even before you finish reading it, you’re thinking ‘I bet guy isn’t serious.’ A story about a serious owner candidate would include that he (she) is rich and give some indication where the money came from: from a buisness, interited, etc. Not that the guy is a two-bit movie producer in lala land.

The more I read about this guy Stephen Rollins, the less I believe.
He’s got a good way of twisting words… including saying he “skated with” the Knights and Blades, but not actually showing up on the roster.
He says in his IMDB bio that his short film “garnered Academy Award ‘Best Live Action Short Film’ consideration,” though it didn’t win and wasn’t even nominated. “Consideration” is a very loose term. It probably means he played at a festival that is an Academy qualifier (like the Atlanta Film Festival).
His acting roles are very small. He says he had a leading role in a UPN sitcom called Billy’s Magic, though that never made it to air. There’s no mention of this show anywhere on the internet.
Then his production company releases a very sketchy press release, about a “rumor.” They also haven’t really made anything of note. Their website also looks like it was created by a high school student… in 1998.
Nothing makes it seem like he would actually have the money to purchase a ECHL franchise, let alone an NHL one.
It just seems all really sketchy to me. I just don’t believe a word of it.

“Rollins was born on September 10, 1974, to Dianne (born Dorothy Dianne Hicks), a telecommunications specialist with BellSouth and President of the Atlanta chapter of the Telephone Pioneers of America, and James Rollins, a Fulton County, Georgia deputy sheriff. Stephen is a graduate of Lithia Springs High School, in Lithia Springs, Georgia. Stephen attended Mercer University, majoring in Communications, Business Management, and Law.”
Former IHL guy -
“In 1993, Stephen began play in professional hockey, skating with the Atlanta Knights and Kansas City Blades of the International Hockey League. In 1994, Stephen played with the New Jersey Rockin Rollers of the RHI league, a professional roller hockey league. Stephen skated with several different professional teams until an ankle injury in 2004 finally took him off skates.”
“In 2004. Stephen launched the EHL, Exhibition Hockey League. The EHL was set up as a non-profit league with the proceeds of each game going to benefit local charities during the 2004 NHL lockout.”
Bit part actor? -
“Rollins began a film career with his acting debut in the films Glory and Career Opportunities as well as the television series In the Heat of the Night and I’ll Fly Away. He has appeared in over 30 feature films and television productions.”
“Rollins is CEO of Lightning Pictures LLC. He wrote, produced, and made his directorial debut with the film American Identity, a tribute to David Angell, the victims of 9/11, and to the men and women of the United States Armed Forces.”

@ Hockey Fan10 – thanks for the info, obviously y’all know more about this franchise’s history than I do (A fact I’m not ashamed to admit). At least you were mature enough to avoid the name calling. For second, I thought I was on the GT blogs again…
I’m a casual fan at best since the work stoppage (strike/lockout – I can’t remember nor do I care…), but part of what DOESN’T catch my attention (or financial investment) is that this franchise has no real identity. The 3 best players that have ever come through here don’t wear the jersey anymore. I know Heatley is a head case, but how can you lose him, let go of Hossa and then Kovy and think that your fan base would support that? The Old Ted wouldn’t go for that and evidently Jr. isn’t a chip off the ol’block.

Rollins bio claims that he “skated with” the Atlanta Knights and some other minor league team. Note that this word is not “played”. A check of hockeydb.com confirms that he has never played minor league hockey. At this point, who knows what exactly “skated with” means. He could have gone to 1 practice through some connection with the team. Or it could all be made up as I don’t know how anyone could possibly verify something that supposedly happened 15 years ago and was an inconsequential as this. I will say that anyone who takes Rollins seriously as a potential owner is an idiot.

Interesting piece on NHL.com about Kirill Kabanov… shouldn’t be any KHL worries, but I still don’t like the kid.
The Kabanov story
05.25.2010 / 1:23 p.m. ET
Of the 100 players invited the NHL Scouting Combine, maybe the most interesting player was Russian-born forward Kirill Kabanov.
Kabanov’s struggles on and off the ice this season have been well-documented — his court battle with the KHL, his wrist injury, leaving his team in Moncton three games into the playoffs, getting booted from Russia’s World Under-18 team.
I wanted to hear Kabanov’s story, and during the 10 minutes he and I talked, he was brutally honest about what happened and where he believes his future lies.
“I can you tell one thing — I will stay in North America forever,” he told NHL.com. “CHL, AHL, NHL — I don’t want to go back to Russia.” He even went as far as saying that he’s considering giving up his Russian citizenship.
With Russian-born players under a microscope for a number of reasons, his words in his Combine interviews are vital. Kabanov’s talents are unmistakable, but his off-ice decisions are what teams have to take into consideration.
I’ll have more on my full discussion with Kabanov on NHL.com on Friday, as well as what a few NHL decision makers think about him.

Dave, without a significant percentage of the profits of Philips Arena, it’s a money loser for Arthur Blank. For Blank to swing this thing, he’d really need to buy the Hawks, Thrashers, and Philips Arena, on a “sweetheart” of a deal. But I doubt these owners just want to give it all away for a “song.” What they really want to do … is rid themselves of Belkin and replace his capital contributions with a new investment partner. Blank is not stupid enough to do business with these guys as partners. Well, not unless he had final ’say-so’ as majority owner. I’ve stopped hoping that the Spirit will simply find a new investor. But I haven’t stopping hoping that they sell the Hawks, Thrashers, and Philips Arena to an isolated owner, so that the team’s ownership can have a face beside it.

Stephen Rollins is a pathalogical liar. That is a fact.
He never stepped foot on the set of Glory. He never even tried to ice skate until the Atlanta Knights came to town. Take a look at him! He’s fat! He’s always been fat. Common sense should tell you he never played pro hockey. On so many of his bio sheets he says he was born in 1974 yet in the article about him purchasing the Thrashers it says he’s 39 (he’ll be 40 this Sept). I could go on and on. He really needs to seek professional help. The guy is sick and a master liar. He can talk his way into anything because lying to him is beyond natural… it’s in his blood.
