Update: Kulda will make NHL debut tonight

Your Friday report from the Thrashers morning skate here in St. Paul.

Defenseman Arturs Kulda, called up yesterday, is will make his NHL debut tonight. When I asked coach John Anderson if Kulda would play tonight in place of the injured Mark Popovic, he said “the chances are 100 percent.”

He said Kulda is 100 percent and Popovic, who appears to have a shoulder injury, is not. Hence the decision to go with Kulda. Friday’s practice was the first for Kulda, who got the call he was heading to the NHL at midnight Wednesday. He was on an 8 a.m. flight for Minnesota on Thursday. He arrived but his equipment did not.

Popovic did take part in the morning skate.

Nik Antropov, who missed yesterday’s practice, was on the ice. Anderson told me yesterday to expect Antropov to miss a practice a week for the rest of the season as he deals with nagging hip injury.

Johan Hedberg will start in goal tonight, with a new goalie mask that has arrived after he broke one earlier this season. Ondrej Pavelec gets the start Saturday in Chicago.

It looks like Slava Kozlov will be the healthy scratch tonight. Todd White is back in Minnesota, where he played for two seasons.

Any idea of last minute trades before roster freeze at 3 p.m.? I had hoped we could dump Kozlov or White for a draft pick.

HUGE game tonight. We can still make a statement in the final playoff push with a win.

Been asked by some of you if Thrash are trading Kozlov. Phones aren’t exactly lighting up for him & he has not been asked to waive NTC.

It will be good to dump Slava and White. Please get Cheechoo, he is on waiver.

Cheechoo is on waivers…is he worth the risk? I think he’s signed through next season for around 3.5mil

Yep, I’m sure they won’t even ask Kozlov to waive his NTC until a valid offer is made by another GM.

I wouldn’t touch Cheechoo with a ten foot pole… something’s wrong with him.

This officially makes the Heatley trade a 2nd round pick and Milan Michalek.

What do you think we could get for Koz or White? Clearly not much, but I think this team needs young, gritty, elbows for lunch bunch type players (aka Kane) and less prissy euro-figure skaters with “soft hands.” (Antro, Afino, Koz, Bergfors (but I like the kid!))

Bergfors and Little work hard in the corners and in front of the net… I’ll take more of that.

Luca Caputi is another guy like that. I wouldn’t mind getting him from Pittsburgh if we can swing an Afino trade.

Brendan,I agree, something must have happened, although if I had Joe Thornton feeding me passes I could probably score 25.Food for thought, may not like Ottawa as compared to San Jose. I see these names pop up on waivers and I keep looking for White’s name to be among them,no such luck!!

I think Cheechoo’s probably taken too many hits to the noggin… he’s been blasted in the face with a puck, elbowed to the head… Schubert plastered him face first against the glass earlier this season.

If I was GM, this is what the 2011 Thrashers would look like. We’d play hard and look for a good draft pick in 2012, but at least be gritty and entertaining.

Bergfors-Little-Antropov
Ott/Higgins-Peverly-Svatos
Kane-Slater-Ott/Higgins
Reasoner-Machanek-Pikkaranen/Bochenski

Bogo-Hainsey
Oduya-Enstrom
Kulda/Schubert/Vlabik

I would try to trade Armstrong/White/Koz/Afino/Kubina for draft picks.

I would try to sign Higgins/Ott/Svatos/Schubert/Slater/Bochenski and Pikkaranen.

I apologize for misspellings.

Trade Deadline in an hour (well first of 2 trade deadlines). Rumors are that Thrashers are sellers, but no action yet. I’m betting the next 2 games play heavy into Thrashers being buyers or sellers when Feb 28th rolls around and the trade block opens for a 4 day jam session.

Perhaps a deal is close on Kozlov and they’ve kept him out in case the deal goes through. Doubtful I know, but why does JA continue to labor under the misconception Todd White is a better option than Slava at this point? Slava has paid his penance…let him play 4th line with Boults and Thorburn and move Colby and Reasy up a line, respectively.

Good luck Arturs…hope you have one hell of a debut!!

I just read this quote from Mark Cuban in an article commenting on his desire to become a minority owner of the Stars…”I’m not looking to outright buy the team,” Cuban said. “I have talked to somebody who is interested in buying the team and I told them I would try to help them get a deal done. From my end, I like hockey, I’m a fan, but I’m not a hockey guy. l’m not going to lie and pretend I can come in and bring the energy that I try to bring to the Mavs….”.
I wish the Atlanta Spirit ownership group were great sports businessmen and as forward-thinking as Cuban, with good heads on their shoulders. Instead, they are ego maniacs that don’t have a clue of how to run a hockey team nor fire a GM. No one in hockey can understand how Don still has a job. Fire Waddell and let Rick Dudley run the team you idiots.

Season Ticket Holder,

Never forget Atlanta Spirit wanted to buy the Hawks. They HAD to take the Thrashers, it was a package deal. It would not surprise me, if the money they free up selling Kari and Kovy, ends up on the Hawks side of the house and is used to improve them at the trade deadline.

There is also a chance, the deals were made to improve the balance sheet on the Thrashers for a possible sale. Atlanta Spirit has been looking for another partner mainly for the Thrashers side, an out right sale at a decent price would fulfill their wildest dreams.

Not much going on in the NHL so far regarding trades. Looks like most deals will happen between March 1 and 3.

I could be wrong, but I would think that somebody could use a veteran like Kozlov for the playoffs. I’ve seen worse players (cough! cough! Gary Roberts) get moved for playoff reasons. Please, no Cheechoo. 3.5 million for next season is far too much to pay for a 4th liner.

Kulda has been playing for the top farm club and has achieved an eye popping +30, or is it +35. All season the Thrash have struggled with less than stellar play from all Dmen except Kubina and Toby. Finally, they call this guy up only when injuries wipe out the threesome who have been holding down the 5-6 spot. Way to go Thrash. Really got an eye for talent out there. Good luck, Kulda, matbe this time they`ll be watching.

I guess Chicago is already trying to get under the cap for next year.

I was amazed how much Carolina got back for Cullen … “Going to Carolina is defenseman Alexandre Picard and the Senators’ 2010 second-round pick.”

I’d take a 2nd round pick for Koz or White.

Chicago to MN not too far, but most players wouldn’t play within 5 hours of being traded to a new team. No one expects Barker to be there and play tonight.

It is really nice to see forwards back check. Antro is always doing it (and probably got pissed several times when Kovy didn’t, i.e. whacking crossbar with his stick a few weeks ago) and Bergfors does it quite well and quite often. I’m sure Antro is a bit happier these days.

Brendan

Mike, Bergfors just scored for Atlanta, to make it, 3-2.

Dang, I wanted Cam Barker here for the longest time. I read above that the Senators coughed up their 2nd round pick to Carolina for Cullen. Is that Ottawa’s own 2nd round pick? Or, was it the 2nd round pick they acquired from San Jose, in the Heatley trade, for Cheechoo and Machalek? San Jose’s 2nd rounder would probably be pick #56-60. Ottawa’s pick would be something like 48th overall.

Did you hear those Minnesota fans “booing” the Wild, as they exited the ice. They’re in a playoff race, too, folks. They couldn’t afford a 4-point swing to Atlanta. The only GOOD NEWS for Minnesota there is … the two points they lost were to an Eastern Conference opponent.

Here’s your boxscore from tonight’s big win in Minnesota. http://www.nhl.com/ice/boxscore.htm?id=2009020903

+1: Hainsey, Kane, Little, Bergfors, Armstrong, Slater, Oduya, and Antropov.

-1: Reasoner, Thorburn, and Boulton.

2-points: Kubina, two helpers.

Goal scorers: Kane, Bergfors, and Antropov.

WAHOO! Things were not looking good early. Johan Moose Hedberg surrendered two first period goals which pushed his total number of goals allowed to five in the last 40 minutes plus a few seconds. Shaky at best! Mr Hedberg then closed the net for the night as Minnesota got zilch over the final two periods. Well done sir! The waved off goal which would have iced the contest was pure bullshet. As was the makeup penalty call. Two points down with two critical points to go! Reg Dunlop authorized a bounty on that damn son of a betch traitor Maryann Hossa. To the heroic Thrasher that plants that bestard under the ice! Team is playing defense. Maybe one of those goals were of marshmallow variety. Certainly not both! Need victory in Windy City boys. Two points mandatory for strong playoff push. Riding Moose into Illinois? Only hope this team has! ++STENDEC++

Mike

11:13 pm

Well, maybe Bergfors didn’t hit a rookie wall…maybe it was just the NJ system. He is definitely taking advantage of playing on the first line and he, Little and Antro are really clicking!

Kulda played a really good game in my mind tonight. Really seemed to always be in the right position.

I really like the effort these guys have shown since both trades. Tomorrow night will be a true test though. They can’t come out slow against Chicago or they will be behind early and coming back against them will make things tough.

I am excited though to think about next season as we make a push for the playoffs. You have Bergfors, Little, Antro, Reasoner, Pevs, Kane,Thorburn, Bogo, Enstrom, Oyuda, Hainsey, Kulda, and Boris. Pretty good group to build around. You resign Kubina, Colby, and possibly Slater and Bolts. You bring up Crabb and sign two top 6 forwards and I say things would look good for next season.
