Name that line

As I sit in a hotel room in Nashville waiting for today’s practice later this afternoon (2 p.m. Eastern time), I will pose a question for the story I’m working on for today/tomorrow.

The Colby Armstrong-Jim Slater-Evander Kane line has 11 points (five goals, six assists) in the past five games since being combined. Got a name for the line? The working title is the ASK line, but certainly we can do better than that. Let me know what you think.

I asked coach John Anderson at yesterday’s morning skate if the play of Slater is one of the reasons he’s had to sit players such as Todd White and Slava Kozvlov. Slater has played the past 15 games after sitting 21 of the first 38 games. Here is his answer:

“No question he has really upped his game. Not only is he playing great defensively, but he has been scoring goals. Right now, he’s one of the top faceoff men in the league. When you have all those things going for you, it’s hard to keep him out of the lineup.”

Some other things to look for (while I wait to get snowed in here).

I will have a overview of where the Ilya Kovalchuk negotiations stand with the Olympic break just around the corner. That will be the NHL Insider column for Sunday’s paper.

My feature on Marty Reasoner is scheduled to run in Monday’s paper. Should be online before that.

I’ll let you know if I run into anyone on the street when I walk the four blocks to the arena. Any chance Ozzy does a book signing in Nashville?

Looking forward to your [printable/useable] recommendations on the name for the line.

See you in Nashville! Can’t wait to see the looks on the locals faces when 400 or so of us invade the arena :)

Why did I just do this?

The “SKA” line? They make really up-tempo fast ummmm, music?

So….I see 4-9 inches of snow (and ice) in the forecast for Nashville tonight/tomorrow…and 500 or so ATL fans making the trip…including me, hoping we can actually make that trip tomorrow!!!!! Can’t wait!!!!

The SKA line gets my vote….fits that tempo well…fast and a bit gritty.

All I could produce was “Strong Jimmy Kane”….just sounds like the name of a character in a western movie or something. Anyway…thats all I got for the name.

I re-watched Kane blast past Pronger over and over. Just unbelievable. That pass the Kubina made to Pevs was just excellent…something you expect from your best d-man. Many compliments to Salmela and Boris for being mostly solid at D.

We have to wait until Sunday for Kovy news?! Booooooooooo….

Kane owned Pronger all night…awesome. No clue what to name that line….How about…..the second line?

The Slayer Line. “Slater” is so close to “Slayer,” and Cain (Kane) slew Abel. Plus, saying that the Slayers are on the ice sounds nice and menacing.

How about the Gay line, because making line names is gay? Especially when they’ll play together for 3 games and then get separated again.

But, I would consider stealing a page from my Hokies and calling them the “Lunch Pail” line… it’s a blue collar term for hard work… “they always bring their lunch”.

I’m partial to the “ska” line as well, but more because my g-friend likes to refer to Jimmy as “Jimmy SKAndalous” cuz he always has that “cat at the canary” smirk on his face…he’s always up to no good! And with Colby, the resident class clown on the team, playing on the same line, the 18 y/o Kane looks like the wise, mature one. I don’t know, but I do love the name “Strong Jimmy Kane” for a western character…nicely played HonkyTonk.

If the players can have sections named for them, can the owner’s section be “Waddell’s Dimwits”. Kane, thanks for making your enthusiasm out there contagious, Slater, keep showing him hard work does have it’s reward, and Armstrong, enjoy hockey with these 2 again!!! Hard work and effort are what this game is ALL ABOUT folks.

Lets say, the ASK line stays together for the remaining of the year, and play well, maybe help lead us to a playoff berth. Do you try to give Armstrong a 2 or 3 year deal for decent bucks??

TrueBlue

No point in naming that line….Considering that Armstrong will be traded by the deadline…at least I hope….

Put Little on that line…..They looked GREAT together that one or 2 games they played….Then just go back to the “1st round” line.

J.B. I have been checking there and many other places. All of the reports contradict what is being said on here. All I have read is saying not to travel. Does Waddell survive if the Thrashers trade or lose their 4th All Star in the last 5 years and miss the playoffs? Other than Army do we have any NHL players from the departure of Savard, Heatley, Hossa…. and does anyone dream of getting a 2011 NHL caliber player for Kovy. Prospect or UFA in return is best hope.

rob, lol at that thought.

Hope my fantasy team stats reflect the added Kubina assist…I know the JA system gives the D men a lot of rope on the offensive end, but that 2nd (or was it 3rd?) Philly goal last night was all on Salmela.

Why on earth was he the first forechecker (and last one out of the offensive zone)? I saw him get trapped and could see the odd man rush and goal coming. Kubina and Enstrom cover pretty well for each other, Bogosian has the speed to get back, but Salmela and Boris is not a good pair to get caught up ice.

i cannot believe that the nashville game is not going to be televised. there is no excuse for not televising a road game. the hawks will be on sportsouth instead of on fox sportsouth [or whatever it is called]. i wonder what will be on that station. probably the third reshowing of a girls high school basketball game from 2006.

For those travelling to Nashville: we left Cumming at 11am and it took us six and a half hours. I24 was bad between Monteagle and Rutherford. Never seen so many wrecks and cars off the road. It was much better once we were within 30 miles of Nashville. Good luck!
