Schubert to miss third straight game

Your report from the Thrashers morning skate before tonight’s game against Carolina.

Christoph Schubert will be out again. Coach John Anderson would provide no further details. Schubert will miss his third game with a lower-body injury suffered Saturday against Carolina.

Same lineup tonight, meaning Todd White and Mark Popovic are the scratches.

Ondrej Pavelec will start in goal.

In a freak accident, assistant coach Steve Weeks was taken to the hospital to get stitches in the back of his head. He was talking along the boards when he stepped on a puck, fell and hit his head on the ice. He was a bit groggy but left the ice on his own. I will check back to make sure all is OK and he attends tonight’s game.

Let me get this posted and I will update later with a few items I gathered from the locker room.

Hope Weeks will be fine. Had a friend who coached, fell backwards on the ice in a similar way. and lost use of his right arm.

Any word on the rumor about Kovy going to Toronto for Kessel?

I couldnt see toronto sending Kessel, who is signed for the next 4 years for a reasonable 5.4, to Atlanta for a rental UFA.

Any chance that Schubie is watching these games from the box and learning not to take silly penalties? Love the fact that he hits (which more of our players would….and that Kozzy would finish a check for once in his life), and that he’s got a powerful shot he’s not afraid to take, but HATE the dumb penalties that he, Doris and occasionally Hainsey take, especially late in the game.

Michael B. Shapiro: Schubert is really hurting. He could be out awhile. I’m trying to see if an IR move is coming – especially if he hasn’t skated at all since the injury on Saturday.

Well, let’s see if Bogosian woke up from his nightmare the other nite.

Anderson on the pairing of Salmela and Valabik: “We put them in tough situations, guys trying to prove themselves, both not wanting to make mistakes. They’ve both handled it very well. One thing I love about Boris is he is carrying the puck a little bit more, moving it up a little more and showing a little more offense by getting shots on net. That tells me he’s getting a lot more confidence.”

Don’t mind Schubert sitting … just wish Postma would be called up to replace Boris.

Tonight is another game the Thrashers should win and must win. Therefore I am concerned. Adding that the Canes should be energized to support Staal’s installation as captain and I therefore believe the Thrashers will let another point or two slip away.

I think Kulda or Oystrick would be the first call-ups before Postma.

Postma is having real trouble adjusting to professional hockey. He is a few years away from being NHL ready. Valabik is improving and not making many dumb plays. too bad that Schoobie is out but he is PP (penalty predictable) at the end of games. Bogosian is picking up his play. Get the Canes tonite.

Heartless. Gutless. Ball-less. Prideless. Pointless. Talentless. Brainless. Ridicu-less. Fightless. Punchless. Senseless. Ludric-less. Those are the GOOD points of the Atlanta semi professional hockey team. Sieve Pavs Lehtonen was up to his old sorry tricks. Marshmallow goals galore. Commode residue El Kapitan Ilya “Pay Me Big Bucks For Absolutely Nothing” Kovalchuk is counting down the days until the Winter Olympics. The Siberian shet will then exit Maryann Hossa mode. Until the second the Olympics are complete. A Loseland blowout loss to the Carolina Panthers. How embarrassing was this total lay down and get pi$$ed on job? Would be akin to the Falcons having lost to the Detroit Lions the season those Michigan scum went winless. Yes. This debacle was that f#cking unacceptable. If any help is needed to load up for trip to Hamilton I will gladly donate a day. Just want these worthless SOBs the Hell out of Atlanta. The sooner the damn better. COME BACK FLAMES! Resurrect the Knights. Bring CARING hockey players back to Georgia. Spare my any excuses apologists. In no damn mood for that bullshet. ++STENDEC++

Guess apologists will dazzle us with bullshet in an effort to explain how wonderful the team in blue was at Loseland tonight. Yardbirds showed upstart Hurricanes. Atlanta team is worst in NHL! Bar none. SOB scumballs! ++STENDEC++ May not have fewest points but definitely have fewest hearts than any other NHL assembly.

There was a play against the boards in Carolina’s end at app 4 mins into the 3rd. There was a Thrasher about 1/2 way down the boards contending for the puck against 2 Canes. They were working their way towards the Cane blueline. The Thrasher playing the blueline doesn’t hold his ground to help keep the puck in. He also doesn’t back off to be ready for a possible Cane breakout. What he does is skate across the blue line to the other side of the ice where the other point guy was. The puck was forced out of the zone of course. How stupid is that? I didn’t see the idiots number but the second digit was a 7 I am pretty sure.

Another worst case scenario points wise. I think I will go check the stats and see who added to their minus stat.

Our Canadian comrades should recognize and give credit to Atlanta as the best hockey town in the league. Unlike places like Toronto where people hand over their money to reward a terrible team our fine citizens recognize a team that has no heart and are willing to walk away. In my book that makes the Atlanta fans much more knowledgeable and discriminating than the sychophants north of the border.

I also think Carolina’s skilled guys try harder than the Thrasher’s skilled guys but Carolina’s sucky guys suck worse than Atlanta’s sucky players. We were discussing this a few days ago. Due to the cap every team has a few superstars but they also have several players that are not really NHL caliber. The quandry is – do you want a calm guy with no hands or skating ability or do you want a guy with great hands and good speed but he makes terrible mistakes whenever he is pressured?

Coming into tonight’s game, this team needed to bank points at about a .745 clip to reach 94-points. If it’s easier, try to think of it this way. The Thrashers need to go 6-2-2 out of every 10 games they play. And well, tonight, they experienced the “4-point swing.” As in, Carolina got two points, while denying Atlanta two-points. What’d I say coming in? Hmmn?

This game MUST END with TWO-POINTS. But that’s not the worst of it. Kozlov missing that glorious scoring chance in the 3rd? Naww. Wasn’t that, either? The atrocious night our PK experienced? That’s tempting, if one were looking for the worst thing to cite. But no, the WORST THING was the postgame presser. When John Anderson said, and I quote, “I guess we’re gonna have to ‘dumb-it-down’ a little bit, and grit out way into goals.”

Ladies and gentlemen, how EXASPERATED must a Coach be … to let those words escape his lips, in PUBLIC? He’s out of ideas. He’s at his witz’ end. And he’s probably wondering why he ever agreed to take the job in Atlanta. Ya know what’s propping up our playoff berth? The ineptness of the teams seeded 6th-13th.

That’s the truth. As long as they continue to SUCK, Atlanta will be in the mix for the playoffs. And before every game, we’ll still be able to say, “Tonight’s game is huge.” Well, the Islanders won. But they tossed a “pity” point to Florida in the exchange. Tampa Bay won, but they tossed Toronto a point in the process. Philadelphia banked two points. So? So teams all around us are finding a way to get points. This was “golden opportunity” to take advantage of playing the 30th place team in the NHL.

Bygones.

Bob, nice “Bob, the Builder” reference! I forgeot which character says, “Yes, we can!”

I take great exception to all those who refer to the Carolina Hurricanes as the worst team in the NHL! These Canes displayed grit, heart and determination in the face of adversity on hostile ice. Have a tremendous amount of respect for that organization. Team captain was not getting the job done so a more deserving player was presented with the C. I would like to rip the C off uniform of El Kapitan Ilya “Give Me Big Money For Being Useless” Kovalchuk. The oxygen waste Russian only shows up to accept feeds during man advantages. How well did he do his job? No goals. Powerless play a horrific 0-for-6. Do the math! Give the C to Moose Hedberg who gives a #### about winning or losing and the two remaining fans. ####, just throw the #### C patch in the trash! Only Mr Hedberg has anything close to NHL caliber talent on this club. Points alone cannot judge worth or worthlessness of NHL unit. When a squad gets blown out on home ice by the alleged worst team in league then that team earns dubious distinction of being recognized as worst. Sort of like college sports polls. No arguments in these quarters. Loseland quitters are worst in NHL! Points be ######. F#ck apologists! Hope Siberian #### enjoys Winter Olympics. Hope the #### loser stays in Soviet Union after Games are over! Contract? Contract extension? For what? All those regulation defeats which result in no points? Even his figure eights have lost their luster and become tiresome. A stale hot dog, a watered down soda pop plus $500 per game. Tops! If he wants more than that then let him take his misfiring and uncaring self on to whiter ice elsewhere. Maybe even to Hamilton. ++STENDEC++

I have no respect for Ilya Kovalchuk.

I have even less after reading this quote which was attributed to him:

“I think we work(ed) hard (if he actually thought that then his mental capacties are to be brought into serious question). We (I) got (off to) a(nother in a long line of) slow start(s) again (pre game vodkas can have that effect). We (I) have to prepare for the game’s better (just what the #### do IK and these other bums do DURING practice?). This was a huge game for us (me), but we (I) have a lot of games (Olympic ones) ahead of us (me). If we (I) play with the right intensity (skating figure eights while awaiting breakout passes are tiring and worth the millions I steal, uh, earn), hopefully things (a big fat contract which I do in no way deserve) are going to go our (my) way (I still get paid so screw my critics and my teammates).”

This is the Atlanta TEAM CAPTAIN?

Sigh.

John Petrino sounded like a blithering idiot himself. Oh well.

“John Anderson said. “The power play is not generating a lot. We didn’t win a lot of draws, and as a result it goes down right away and we have to fight to get in the zone. We have to be much better than that.”

WTF? Coach, YOU can put in a different, more successful center to take PP draws. WHY DIDN’T YOU? Antropov took virtually every PP draw tonight, winning only 38% of his draws on the night. Why does Anderson act like he had no control in the matter?

And what about pulling the goalie who gave up 3 goals in 11 shots in He first period? WHY DIDN’T YOU PULL PAVELEC BEFORE THE GAME WAS LOST?

And why not look at your dismal PK rather than just the PP? WHY DO YOU STILL HAVE HAINSEY AND BOGO ON THE PK TOGETHER? THEY WERE ON THE ICE FOR AT LEAST 2 GOALS TONIGHT.

WHY DOES THE D-MAN WITH THE BEST +/- GET ZERO PK TIME? WOULDN’T IT BE WISE TO TRY TOBY ON THE PK…ITS GONE FROM TOP 5 TO THE BOTTOM OF THE LEAGUE.

Anderson points the fingers at the players, but a whole heckuva lot was in his control tonight. He was out-coached by Maurice.

Sam – you are right on point. And yes, Bogo and Hains are miserable together for the most part. They were on the ice for ALL 4 goals we allowed with a goaltender. Terrible support of their goalie.

Kubina should be paired with Hainsey and Bogo with Valabik on the PK. Say what you will about Bobo but he will tie up opponents at the net and make it much tougher for them to jam home rebounds. Hainsey is so busy trying to block shots with one knee down, he’s never in a position to clear a rebound. Bogosian? I have no earthly idea what he was doing last night. Seems like he was standing around for the majority of the first 30 mins of play. Salmela was a +2…go figure.

Why doesn’t Peverley take every PP draw. I know he took a few at the end of the game on the PP, but before that, I reckon Antro got too many tries. And can we please take Afinogenov off the PP for good (and Kozlov). Finny whiffs on too many good chances and his spastic passes confuse the hell out of his teammates. No wonder Lindy Ruff gave up.

CHRIS: Please STOP quoting Ron Hainsey unless you are asking him, “Hey Ron, Why do YOU suck so bad?” He was on the ice for the first 4 goals against during the Carolina game, and continues to steal millions all the while telling you how bad the forwards and the rest of the team is doing.

The dude was supposed to be an offensive defenseman and boy is he ever! He is sooooo offensive, the stench can be felt all over the empty arena.
He’s Sutton without the cheap hits….nerf checker extrodinaire.
